TRUNEWS with Rick Wiles - Date: August 17, 2026. Lesson 161-2026. Title: Home Becomes a Storm: Breaking Cycles of Contention

Episode Date: August 17, 2026

In today’s Morning Manna, Rick Wiles and Doc Burkhart examine Proverbs 27:15–16 and Solomon’s sobering picture of a contentious spirit as the relentless dripping of a leaking roof. The danger is... not one disagreement, but the accumulation of criticism, bitterness, and conflict that gradually destroys the peace God intended for the home. This lesson explains why hiding relational problems cannot heal them, why Scripture’s warning applies to husbands and wives alike, and how the transforming work of the Holy Spirit can replace contention with love, peace, gentleness, and grace. The answer is not maintaining appearances—it is allowing God to change the heart producing the storm. Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to Morning Manor. Welcome to Morning Manas, Your teachers, Reckwiles, and Dr. Burkla. Get your Bible and get ready to hear as you've never heard it before. Hello, I've got two questions for you. Do you live with a contentious, argumentated person? And number two, do you know someone who does? live with such a person and you don't know what to say to them about their unfortunate situation.
Starting point is 00:00:44 If you answered yes to one or both questions, then today's Bible lesson is for you. Good morning. My name is Rick Walsh. And this is Morning Manor. My co-partner in teaching the Word of God is Dr. Raymond Burckhardt. And together, we aim to mine rich spiritual menorough from every verse in the Holy Bible to help you, to help me, to help out for all of us, so that we live richer, full, more productive, healthier lives in the eyes of God and in the eyes of our fellow mankind.
Starting point is 00:01:28 So our lessons are archived at manna Nation.com, also on the Rick Wiles Today channel on YouTube. and I'll say it again, as I've said in the past, we are a faith ministry. That means we trust God for our finances to pay the expenses of this international Bible teaching ministry. Now, here's the way it works. Step number one, Doc and I obey God by teaching His Word and making disciples among men and women worldwide. Step two, our obedience requires us to trust the Lord to cover the expenses of teaching His Word and making disciples internationally worldwide. Step three, you need discipleship and spiritual mentoring.
Starting point is 00:02:25 You watch Morning Man on five days a week to have your soul fit. Step four, you must trust God to meet your personal mind. needs, that your bills be paid, that your prayers be answered. Step five, you obey God by giving to those men and women who minister daily in the word of God. Step six, your obedience in giving provides the financial resources for Doc and me to continue teaching. Step seven, God rewards your faith and obedience by providing you with financial resources to meet your needs step eight from your overflow of blessings from heaven you give again to morning manna and the cycle repeats itself over and over and all of us are blessed that's how faith works it is as simple and natural
Starting point is 00:03:25 as breathing in and out you don't have to think about it you just do it because it's necessary to live You would never stop breathing. You're going to die. If you stop giving, spiritual, you're going to, you're going to wither. Giving is what brings heaven's blessings into your life. It's foolish not to give. So always be giving. And it's not just to our ministry.
Starting point is 00:03:54 I would never tell you just to give to our. You need to become a generous giver to many to your church and to other ministries that are teaching the Word of God. Romans, the book of Romans, chapter 10, verse 11, says, so then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. And then in Hebrews, chapter 11, verse 6, but without faith, it is impossible to please him, for he that comeeth to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. So here we go again. One, two, two, three. It's simple. One, two, three. Faith comes by hearing the word of God. Two, it is impossible to please God without faith. Three, and God rewards those who diligently seek him. Get in that rhythm, right? Of walking by faith, of pleasing God and being rewarded by God. He has a system that he put in place at creating. a divine order.
Starting point is 00:05:05 You can rebel against it. You can ignore it. You can do anything you want to do. You can say, I don't like it. I don't agree with it. I have my own. It doesn't matter. It's his system.
Starting point is 00:05:15 It's not going to change. And he rewards those who diligently seek him. That's the way this works. Now, God himself promises, and I can wholeheartedly concur, that it is, is true in my life. That's all I can say is it works in my life, that the Lord will richly bless those who seek him, learn about his word,
Starting point is 00:05:45 and generously bless those who teach the word of God. I can tell you it works. I can't speak for anybody yet, but I can speak for me. It works. It's been working for me for decades. If you believe this, go to manna nation.com. There's a heart in the upper right corner.
Starting point is 00:06:09 Click that heart and show your faith, still your appreciation, release your faith, and show your appreciation for the work that Doc Workhart and I do here five days a week to teach you the Word of God. So let's pray and invite the Holy Spirit. Then after Raymond Burkhart will open and introduce today's lesson. Almighty God,
Starting point is 00:06:32 our Father in heaven. Father, we thank you that you are a good Father, and you do reward those who diligently seek you. Everybody here in this classroom right now is seeking you. Therefore, we know we will be rewarded, and we thank you, Father. Father, we ask for the presence of the Holy Spirit and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit upon Doc to teach the Word. And, Father, your blessing.
Starting point is 00:07:02 and an anointing on the people to receive the word, or to go down inside of them, and take root and produce fruit for the glory of your Son, Jesus Christ. In His name we pray, amen. Amen. Welcome, everyone, to Morning Man. I'm so glad to have you here with us again today. It is always a blessing to be able to share the Word of God with you.
Starting point is 00:07:25 And we are continuing our study today in Proverbs chapter 27. and today we're going to be looking at verses 15 and 16, versus 15 and 16. By the way, if you'd like to see previous editions of Morning Manna, you can always visit manana Nation.com. That's manna nation.com. And on the sites there, you're going to see all the previous episodes. We number them.
Starting point is 00:07:50 Today's episode number is 161-2026. So if you want to follow up on this later on, but we'd love to have you do it. It's at manna nation.com. Now, Proverbs chapter 27, verses 15 and 16, this is going to sound very familiar today, and yet there's going to be some new information that we're going to be sharing with you.
Starting point is 00:08:12 So let's get started here. Verse 15, a continual dropping in a very rainy day, and a contentious woman are alike. Whosoever hideth her, hideeth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand, which beareth itself. And the Septuagint, on a stormy day, drops of rain drive a man out of his house. So also does a railing woman drive a man out of his own house.
Starting point is 00:08:39 The north wind is sharp, but it is called by name, Whate. All right, this is going to be an interesting set of scriptures today. Proverbs 27 verses 15 and 16 returns to a theme that this series has now encountered three separate times in the book. So, basic premise is the destructive effort of a contentious spirit within a household. The same proverb in nearly identical form appears in Proverbs 1913, Proverbs 21, 9, and Proverbs 25, 24. But it's going to get its full development here. Now, as we've mentioned before, Solomon's repetition in the past means he's trying to get a
Starting point is 00:09:26 message across. And now we have a fourfold repetition of this scene, and that's the first thing worth noting. So this series has already observed that scripture repeats almost verbatim only what is both critically important and chronically ignored. A truth stated four separate times in a single book is the truth Solomon regarded as urgent and persistently unheeded. So verse 15 supplies this governing image, a continual dropping on a rainy day, the maddening, unceasing drip of water through a failed roof, arriving not as a single crisis, but as an endless succession of small, unstoppable intrusions. Then verse 16 supplies the diagnosis of what makes this condition so intractable. Attempting to restrain or conceal it is like attempting to restrain the wind or to grass boil in
Starting point is 00:10:26 hand. The harder one tries to contain it, the more certainly it escapes, and the effort itself becomes evidence of what's being concealed. There's a principle here. The principle it teaches that a contentious spirit within a household produces relentless damage and cannot be concealed. And that's applied with full force to husband and life alike. So Proverbs addresses male contentious directly and repeatedly all throughout scripture. This series has already examined the contentious man. For instance, back in Proverbs 2621, as coals are to burning coals and wood to fire,
Starting point is 00:11:09 so is a contentious man to Kendall Stry. So it's not limited to any particular gender here, Rick. So wisdom's warning is against contentiousness itself. Wherever it operates, and no readers should hear it as a licensed to overlook the same feeling in themselves, just because they're another gender. So Rick is going to start us off today in our discussion
Starting point is 00:11:35 with his examination of verse 15. Rick? Thank you, Doc. Reverts 27, verse 15, a continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contingentous woman are alike. Another way of saying it is a drip, that drives forward, that persists relentlessly on a day of continuous downpour.
Starting point is 00:12:07 And the water just keeps dripping from the roof through ceiling onto the floor. You ever had that situation? You've got a bucket, catch the water, and it just keeps coming. The rain keeps coming. There's no end to it. You can't fix it because it's raining. The time to fix the roof is before the rain starts, because once the rain starts, you're not going up on the roof to fix it.
Starting point is 00:12:40 So you know the situation. Let's look at the context. Ancient Near East, Australia, the Middle East. The Middle East, homes were constructed of Earth and beams and in a prolonged heavy downpour of rain, they leaked. Not in a dramatic collapse, but in a persistent, maddening drip. You know, the Chinese water torture. Why did the Chinese torture people with dripping water?
Starting point is 00:13:21 Because it drives people crazy. That's why. It's as simple as that, right? So this is a maddening drift that cannot be stopped from the inside. And it ruins whatever it falls upon. And it makes the rest of the, it makes the house impossible to live inside and to be at rest and be quiet because you constantly hear the drift. and you know something is wrong. The roof is leaking.
Starting point is 00:13:58 We've got a problem. And as the drift continues and gets bigger and faster, then you don't. I've got a serious problem here in this house. And so you can't rest. You can't go into your bedroom, pull covers over your head because you know this problem is there. This is where we're going with this lesson.
Starting point is 00:14:20 It's really important. I think this is going to be a, spiritual awakening for many of you that you already know about the continuous tripping what this means. I think you're going to learn something that is going to revolutionize how you handle these situations. The specific format lies in three features. First is persistence, not one drop, not 10 drops, not 100 drops. thousands of drops, arriving without pause, drift, drift, drift, drift over and over and over an hour after hour. It never stops. Second, it's timing. It's on a rainy day. Precisely when the house is most needed as a refuge. You have to be in the house. on a stormy rainy day you don't have anywhere to go number three it's location it's inside the home the one place a person expects protection and you know protection from this this kind of assault
Starting point is 00:15:46 the one place that somebody rightfully should have a place of rest and so the person can't rest in their own home. The comparison to a contentious spirit is right on, on all three counts. Contentiousness within a household is rarely a single dramatic confrontation. It's not one big fight that blows up and then is over an hour later. It is a relentless succession of criticisms, complaints, probably. incals, ridicule, reviling, just, it never stops. It never takes a break.
Starting point is 00:16:34 It starts in the morning and it ends at night. It goes all day long. And it arrives most reliably in seasons that are already difficult. You're under stress. There's a difficulty in your job, in your business, maybe in your, there's something. You've got a rainy season taking place
Starting point is 00:16:55 your life and the dripping starts. It's the time that you need to find safety in your house, but the dripping starts, the worst time. And it operates precisely where refuge should be found. It converts the one place person expects rest and makes that one place impossible to find rest. Now, no, What the proverb does not say.
Starting point is 00:17:29 It does not describe a wife or husband who occasionally disagrees, who raises genuine concerns, or who vies at their best in a peaceful way to confront difficulties. Every home is going to have difficulties. Orchtern is how do you resolve them? How do you confront them? this proverb, well, similar to five and six, okay, that we, chapter 27, verse of five and six, it explicitly commends open rebuke and the faithful wounds of a friend.
Starting point is 00:18:13 Remember that lesson, right? The, the wounds of a faithful friend. So healthy households require honest disagreement. It's okay. But each partner must respect each other. We'll go back to Dr. Luss Carter, DRC, dignity, respect, civility. Those are the three principles that should be operating in your life, in your home and in your relationships with everybody.
Starting point is 00:18:47 Treat everybody with dignity and respect. civility and when you do that, you have a right to demand it. I'm just expected you have a right to demand it from us. So you need to talk to me with dignity and respect and civility. The person who is contentious refuses to treat you with dignity, respect, and civility. Now, what this proverb is names is, is, is different than talking about healthy disagreement.
Starting point is 00:19:24 It's talking about the subtle disposition, that disposition that just always, always goes towards friction, the contentiousness that finds an occasion for conflict in nearly everything. You say, here's a beautiful warning, and they start fighting. you say you say something about you know hey i see the i see the grass who's really green today they starts a fight okay everything every single thing starts a fight that's a contingentious person
Starting point is 00:20:07 you can't say anything that does not start that fight okay those kind of people never permit a season of peace inside the house it's really sad because The contentious person is one really miserable person. And they made up their mind, if I'm going to be miserable, you're going to be miserable too. Okay. That's really what it comes down to. I'm going to make everybody miserable. So the cruelty of the continual dropping, the drips of water, okay,
Starting point is 00:20:47 is not the severity of a single individual drop. But the cruelty is the impossibility of getting rest because the dropping, the dripping never stops. One drop of water is not going to disturb you. But thousands of drops over hours will drive you crazy. So a household, a family can survive a storm, but it cannot survive an unending grip of contention because no single instance is severe enough to demand action
Starting point is 00:21:34 while its accumulation is severe enough to make the house unenheldable. That's what Solomon is teaching. that this contentious person makes the home uninhabitable. And we're going to see this when we get to the Septuagia. Because the Septuagin is very blunt about this, about the inhabitability of the home of a contentious person.
Starting point is 00:22:06 So Doc, I'll let you take it from here. Well, you know, Rick, we have to ask the question. What's the purpose of a home? What is its purpose? The home is a place of refuge designed by God for refuge, for formation, for rest. And this proverb addresses the seriousness of any pattern that seeks to systematically defeat that design in God's divine order. So scripture's picture of the household is one of shelter. And this is a principle that we can see observed in the Old Testament in New Testament.
Starting point is 00:22:46 Hieronym 6 versus 6 through 9, the place where the covenant is taught to children. That's really, when you get down to it, that's the purpose of the home, where hospitality is extended, where husband and wife dwell together as being heirs together of the grace of life, according to 1st Peter 3.7. So a contentious spirit does not merely make a home unpleasant, Rick. It defeats the purposes that God has assigned to the household. You know, I think we really miss this, especially in Western cultures today, that God has a divine purpose for the home. And 1 Peter 3.7, and it's warning that a husband's failure
Starting point is 00:23:28 in this domain hinders his own prayers, and that establishes the household relational patterns, carry genuine spiritual consequence in other areas of life. not just merely social discomfort. Colossians 319, husband, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. And Ephesians 525, they're the standard of Christ's own self-giving love,
Starting point is 00:23:57 making clear that the contentious spirit is equally forbidden to men. So it's not just women we're talking about here, okay, but men as well. and that scripture standard for husbands is set really at the highest possible level. So this application runs in two directions. To anyone recognizing this pattern in a spouse, husband or wife, wisdom validates that the burden is real and it's genuinely serious. It's not imagined or oversensitive.
Starting point is 00:24:30 Solomon talks about it four times here in Proverbs. to anyone who suspects the pattern may describe themselves, this proverb is actually a mercy, offering you an opportunity to recognize and to repent of a disposition that is corroding the household that God gave you to build. You can't just sit there and say, well, that's just me. You know, I get a little cranky, a little crusty sometimes.
Starting point is 00:25:00 Nope. This is an item to repent. of. So the remedy is not suppression of honest communication, but the transformation of the spirit that produces the contention. So Galatians 5, 22, and 23, you've got the fruit of the spirit. The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, jealousness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, against such, there is no law. And the absence of the fruit of the spirit produces that continual drop, drop, drop, dropping of bitterness in the home. And the contentious argumentative husband or wife, they really need to be honest and ask
Starting point is 00:25:47 themselves, why am I so bitter? Why am I so mean? Why am I so critical? Why am I so negative? Why am I so sarcastic? Why is the fruit of the spirit not visible in my life? If the first fruit of the spirit does not rule your life, whose fruit does rule? What fruit are you taking part of? If you're not taking part of the fruit of the spirit, you're getting fruit from somewhere else. I'd say an awful question to ask, if the fruit of the spirit is not present in your life, whose spirit, whose fruit is it? And there's only one other choice, one other alternative. That's Satan. and I can't say how any Christian could continue to exhibit Satan's fruit in their lives. How could you do that?
Starting point is 00:26:51 I mean, that ought to bring you under great conviction. Let's look at the Greeks of Tuagint translation of verse 15, King James, says a continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike. Now, listen to the Septuagint, on a stormy day, drops a rain drive a man out of his house. So also does a railing woman drive a man out of his house? Much more explicit. the Septuagint makes explicit what the King James leaves implied and adding a consequence that the King James states only by inference
Starting point is 00:27:42 that the dripping drives the man out of his house, meaning he's cast out, he's expelled, he's driven forward by the constant dripping, as he's trying to get relief from. So he has to leave his own house to get relief from the dripping that's in his house. This considerably sharpens the Proverbs practical warning.
Starting point is 00:28:15 The King James establishes the comparison. The Septuagint traces it to its predictable outcome. A person subjected to relentlessly, household friction eventually leaves the home. This is where this is starting to get personal now, right? This person doesn't leave by divorce, but by absence. And this absence may not be physically have left the property. It could be longer hours at work.
Starting point is 00:28:54 It could be more time away and gone fishing. I got to go do something. Working in a garden, I got to do something. Okay, I'm out of the house. How many husbands does this describe? You're going to get quiet now, right? It could be emotional withdrawal while inside the house, but emotionally separate. There's a gradual retreat of the person who has learned that his house offers no rest.
Starting point is 00:29:34 And so they may just emotionally withdraw and go within, just hide to get away from verbal abuse, which that's what this dripping is. It's verbal abuse. Right. And that phrase, Rick, out of his own house, adds a particular pointancy to this. This isn't some stranger driven from an unfamiliar place, but a person expelled from what is rightfully his own home. driven out not by force, but by the impossibility of remaining at peace within it. And so this connects directly to the parallel proverbs
Starting point is 00:30:14 that we mentioned earlier in chapter 21 verse 9 and chapter 25 verse 24. Better to dwell in a corner of a house top than with a brawling woman in a wide house. We dealt with those before, which describe exactly this outcome. That driven out person, Rick, occupying the rooftop corner, trying to get as far away as they can from the conflict,
Starting point is 00:30:38 physically present on the property, but mentally checked out, relationally exiled from the home, choosing the rainy rooftop and the beating sun on the rooftop over the constant relentless friction downstairs and doors. And so withdrawal, some of you, right now they're watching and listening right now, you say, wait a minute, that sounds a little bit like me. I'm telling you, sometimes we do this.
Starting point is 00:31:10 Withdrawal is identified as the predictable consequence of sustained contentiousness. And it's a warning to anyone that's caught in this pattern that a spouse's eventual absence, whether it's physical, relational, emotional, or any
Starting point is 00:31:30 combination of those, this isn't some mystery to be figured out or some puzzle to be solved, but a consequence to be prevented while there's still time, Rick. After the next one, verse 16, I think this is going to be a big, very important revelation to some people watching right now. whosoever hided her, hideeth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand, which be reeth itself.
Starting point is 00:32:06 Okay, be reaith as an old English word. We don't use. And I, I just automatically, my mind says it, it means betrayeth. And it doesn't say betrayer. It says be reaith. Okay. How often do we read verses,
Starting point is 00:32:26 and we substitute a word that's not there. Okay? So that's what's here. This is be rayeth itself. Now, I got to tell you, Doc, this was one of those verses. I don't think I ever understood until this week, preparing for this lesson.
Starting point is 00:32:49 I probably would have pretended I knew, but it didn't. I just would have read over it and said, oh, okay, well, this is what I think it means. But let me go into detail about what this verse is teaching us, okay? Verse 16 turns from describing the condition of what's happening inside the house, the dripping, the maddening Chinese water torture. the husband leaving the house, leaving the relationship to get away from, okay?
Starting point is 00:33:36 That's in verse 15, but verse 16 describes the futility of every attempt to conceal it or restrain it. Right. Oh, Doc, this is really fascinating. It is. The Hebrew phrase is the one hiding her hides the wind. What a picture.
Starting point is 00:34:07 It's a picture that's impossible. Wind cannot be enclosed. Wind cannot be contained. When cannot be hidden. When cannot be held. By its very nature, it moves. And any container capable of holding it would cease to be when. by the holding.
Starting point is 00:34:34 The attempt is not difficult. It is impossible. Listen again to the scripture. This one takes, you need to listen carefully and ponder this one. Whosoever hideth her, who is it that you're hiding? The contentious woman.
Starting point is 00:34:58 Whoever hides this contentious woman hides the wind. And the point, meant of his right hand, who is his, the husband, which be reaeth itself. Again, in a power, I'm not quite sure what this means. The King James, this archaic English word be reaith. It means reveals, redeems. The image is of a fragrant oil,
Starting point is 00:35:47 in the hand. The harder the hand closes to conceal it, the more the oil escapes between the fingers. And the fragrance itself announces itself to everyone in the room. So, Doc,
Starting point is 00:36:06 if I had this fragrant oil and I poured it in your hand and you squeezed your hand trying to hide it, the oil is going to lose between your fingers and drip down your hands and down your arms.
Starting point is 00:36:26 You can't do it. You can't grip oil. And the fragrance that's in that oil is going to be released into the room wherever you're at. And people are going to go, well, that work hard is trying to squeeze oil and keep it hidden. But we all know what he's holding. That's peppermint. oil. That's whatever oil it is. You're going to smell it because the odor, the fragrance is being released into the room by you squeezing and you're squeezing it for the purpose of hiding what it is.
Starting point is 00:37:09 But the more you squeeze it to hide it, the more everybody knows what you're hiding. You get to picture? Now this makes sense. that the very effort at concealment produces the disclosure. Oh, this is going to talk to a lot of people. This is going to talk to people that are trying to cover up something, you know, trying to pretend it didn't happen, trying to, you know, you get a problem in the church, you have a problem in the business, you know,
Starting point is 00:37:49 the more you squeeze, the hide it, the more it's going to be made, known, okay, it's just going to release itself, okay? The Proverbs insight is that a contentious spirit cannot be managed or covered up or hidden by your efforts of containment. That's the message here. So if households that are frequently, households frequently attempt,
Starting point is 00:38:30 Exactly the strategy. They maintain an appearance in public. They present a united face, whether it's a church, at work, neighborhood, and they conceal from friends and relatives and coworkers to the reality of what daily life is really like inside that house. They don't want anybody to know it. The husband who is being verbally abused by this dripping doesn't want anybody to know that he's the target of abuse.
Starting point is 00:39:10 And the abuser doesn't want anybody to know that she's abusing her husband. And so they keep it hidden from the public. Anybody squirming in your seat right now? Anybody becoming uncomfortable? So Thoemen in verse 16 is declaring the futility of this strategy. He's saying, it's not going to work. I don't care how hard you try. It's not going to work.
Starting point is 00:39:40 You can't catch the wind and you can't squeeze and hold fragrant oil. You just can't do it. The reality escapes. The fragrance betrays itself. The effort at concealment is itself eventually visible to anyone paying attention. So this is not a, this is not a, It's not advice towards broadcasting your private struggles. That's not what it's about.
Starting point is 00:40:19 But it's a warning against self-deception that a corrosive pattern can be indefinitely hidden while remaining unaddressed. Eventually, you're going to have to deal with a leak in the roof. Concealment substitutes for cure. And verse 16 declares that the substitution does not work. The conditions continue corroding regardless of how successfully it is disguised and covered up. And eventually the disguise fails and is revealed. Methodist theologian Adam Clark, it was a close friend of John Wesley. He observed that the two images,
Starting point is 00:41:16 in verse 16, the wind and the oil, were deliberately chosen by Solomon for their opposite properties. Wind is invisible and cannot be seen escaping. But fragrant oil is unmistakably detected by the senses, even when it is unseen. According to Clark, together they teach that the contentious spirit escapes both notice and containment, unseen in its going and unmistakable in its evidence. Charles Spurgeon observed that the energy spent managing and containing the appearance of a troubled home is energy not spent healing it.
Starting point is 00:42:12 And that verse 16 declares the first expenditure entirely wasted since concealment eventually fails. Spurgeon counseled that honest acknowledgement before God is the only door out of a condition that human management strategies cannot solve. Doc, this is deep stuff today. It is. And like you said, Rick, I think you're people watching, listening today that might be squirming a little bit because it finally came home today. It's one
Starting point is 00:42:55 thing to talk about theory, but today it came home. It got practical today. And there's a theological principle in verse 16 that is one this series has encountered repeatedly. The impossibility, the impossibility of sustaining a concealed interior condition indefinitely, whether it's in the home or in your heart, and the certainty of its eventual exposure. Proverbs 2626 stated the same principle regarding that concealed bitterness and hatred. It said, whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shown before the whole congregation. And then over in the New Testament, Luke chapter 12, verse 2, Jesus himself says there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed. Think about this. We think it means some egregious, deep, dark sin, but we're talking about bitterness and contentiousness here. That's what's going to be revealed. And the wind and the oil are this universal principle applied to this household contentiousness. The futility of trying to conceal something redirects the attention to where it belongs, to the interior condition producing the contention rather than the managing.
Starting point is 00:44:17 of the outward appearance. Isn't that what the key thing is? People try to manage the appearance of things instead of dealing with the issue inside. And this is consistent with Christ's repeated redirection when he spoke to the Pharisees from the outside of the cup to what filled it. Okay, in Matthew 23.
Starting point is 00:44:41 Energy spent managing the appearance of a happy marriage is energy not spent addressing the problems of the marriage. And so verse 16 declares that first expenditure wasted because concealment eventually fails regardless. While it addresses the actual spirit, producing the friction is the only investment with any prospect of return. And the gospel's word must not be amended here
Starting point is 00:45:13 because scripture never diagnoses without offering a remedy, is it? Thank God for that. It never states a problem without providing a solution. And James chapter 4, verse 1, locates the source. And do you know where it is? It's in the heart. It's in the heart.
Starting point is 00:45:32 And says, come they not hence even of your lust that wore in your members? And James chapter 4, verses 6 through 10 addresses that source directly. What do you have to do in order to really address those issues? issues that are internal. You have to humble yourself before God. You got to draw near to him. You need to receive his grace that he gives to be humble. And you know, there's no household beyond the reach of that grace. I know you might feel like you're in an impossible situation, but I'm telling you, there is no household beyond the reach of God's grace. The wind cannot be contained by human effort.
Starting point is 00:46:17 But guess what? The God who maketh the storm a calm, it says in Psalm 107.29. Jesus calmed the stormy sees, didn't he? It's entirely capable of changing what the wind carries.
Starting point is 00:46:33 So households that have lived under that continual dropping for years, they can be genuinely transformed when the Holy Spirit producing what was honestly named and surrendered, Rick. Doc, we're going to take a look at the Septuagin for verse 16.
Starting point is 00:46:54 It's a different one. King James says, Whosoever, hideeth her, hideeth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand, which be rayeth itself. Listen to the Septuagin. The north wind is sharp,
Starting point is 00:47:12 but it is called by name Lucky. I wasn't quite sure where to go with this, Doc. So the Septuagint departs substantially from the King James, offering what appears to be an entirely different proverb. It's got a name called Lucky. How do we explain it? We do our best. The wind image is retained, but the oil is absent.
Starting point is 00:47:50 and the sense shifts from futile concealment to a comment on names and perceptions. The observation offered is that of the North Wind. And the North Wind is harsh. It's cutting. If you've ever felt a North Wind, you know what we're talking about. And yet, Solomon says it bears a name that's associated with good fortune. So there, what, how do you explain this? The North wind is cold, it's cutting. It's, it makes you uncomfortable.
Starting point is 00:48:37 What Solomon says it's called, it's called lucky. It's got good fortune. So there's a gap between what something is called and what something actually does. That's the only thing I can understand here with this proverb in Septuagint. So when you read it alongside the King James version about concealment, you've got a complementary insight. Names and reputations can obscure realities for a time. A household may be spoken of well and carry a lucky name in the community,
Starting point is 00:49:22 while the actual daily experience inside that house is sharp and cutting and cold as the north wind. What do you think, Doc? That's the best I can do with this one. No, you know, think how many families and households out there look peaceful and successful and they got it all together. But inside, inside, there's that contention that's going on. can't live with each other. You know, so really, though, when you put both traditions together, both the King James and the Septuagint, they arrive at the same practical destination just by different routes.
Starting point is 00:50:06 So King James warns that concealment eventually fails. The Septuagint warns that favorable names may temporarily disguise harsh realities, right? It's still concealing, isn't it? Both of them are attending to what a thing actually is rather than what it appears to be or what it's called. So reputations, including household reputations, are not reliable evidence of actual conditions. We can be easily deceived by reputations or what appear to be.
Starting point is 00:50:48 The family, you know, that perfect family, that perfect family, universally spoken well of, may be enduring their own north wind, but it's blown inside the house. And the man or the woman learns to inquire gently, rather than to assume a good name, reflects a peaceful home. So Baptist pastor John Gill noted the significance of the Septuagin's departure at verse 16. and he observed that its comment on the gap between a favorable name and a harsh reality compliments rather than contradicts the Hebrews warning.
Starting point is 00:51:31 Both counsel attention to what a thing actually is rather than to what it is called or how successfully it's disguised. Rick, we've mentioned several times in our lesson today that you might be feeling uncomfortable in this lesson today. that Proverbs finally came home today, that Proverbs finally showed up at your door. Proverbs sat down at the dinner table with you and your family. It's not the first time. It's not the first time.
Starting point is 00:52:07 It's not the first time. This is a unique situation. You can't get through Proverbs and not get uncomfortable at times. That's the beauty of this book. but we've talked about convention before. We've talked about it three times, but here on this fourth time, is the message getting through?
Starting point is 00:52:30 Is that message finally getting through? It's almost as if Solomon said, I'm going to tell you this one more time. I'll tell you what comes in my mind. That Solomon is saying to someone, three times you heard me say it. Three times you heard me describe your condition, and you continue to conceal it.
Starting point is 00:52:55 You just went up on the roof. You went out to the waistline. You got away from the trouble. You continue to conceal it. I'm telling you for the fourth time, the concealment will not work. That's what I hear in this one, dog. The Psalm is to say,
Starting point is 00:53:14 you cannot cover this up. You cannot conceal it anymore. You've got to face it head on. you've got to deal with it. And let the grace of God work it out. It may work out well. It may not work out well. But you've got to deal with it.
Starting point is 00:53:31 You've got to confront it. It's not going to be fixed by ignoring it, covering it up. You going on the roof, going someplace. That's not going to fix it. You've got to deal with a contentious spirit. Okay. Face it. Face to face.
Starting point is 00:53:49 You've got to deal with it. Okay. And then, see, when you do that, the person who is contentious has got to deal with, why am I contentious? Why am I argumentative? Why am I mean? Why do I cause so much trouble? Okay. So that's what I see here, Doc, is Solomon saying, you've been warned three times.
Starting point is 00:54:14 This is my last time, but I'm not warning you anymore. I'm telling you it's got to be dealt with. because it's not going to go away. So does that speak to you? Does that speak to you? Is it speaking to you to do the thing, the unthinkable thing, which is to ask for help?
Starting point is 00:54:35 Yeah, there you go. Is that the unthinkable thing that you just did not want to ask someone and say to someone, I have a problem, I can't solve? I don't know what to do. I need help. Are you willing to do that?
Starting point is 00:54:58 That may be where you're at right now today. Where you finally come face to face and say, there's a problem here. And it's getting worse. And it's driving me crazy. I need help. And so there's where you're at right now. You need to pray that the Lord lead you to a godly person or something.
Starting point is 00:55:20 several people who will have the discernment to know what's going on, how to bring about a correction so that both people in that household are set free and liberated. Right. And the first step is crying out to God in repentance. Yes, right. Both of them. The one that's allowing it to continue, and the one that's doing the contentiousness, if you will.
Starting point is 00:55:54 Both need to repent, but it has to start somewhere, doesn't it? Yes. Yes, and I think that's just what, I think this is what's speaking to people today, that you need to ask for help. So don't be afraid to ask for help. Hold yourself and ask for help. And that God lead you. It may be a one year, two year process, just go through it.
Starting point is 00:56:20 go through it and let the Lord bring about a healing so that that contentious spirit goes away. It is, a contentious spirit is not of the Lord. That is of the devil. It is of the devil. It's of hell. Okay. And that contentious spirit has got to leave your home. But the way you've been trying to deal with it isn't working.
Starting point is 00:56:44 It's like catching the wind. It's like squeezing oil. It isn't working. There's where somebody, turning it off right now. That's where somebody's struggling right now. Say, oh, that describes what I've been doing. I've been trying to catch the wind. I've been trying to squeeze oil.
Starting point is 00:57:03 Okay. Does it work? What Solomon is saying, it doesn't work. Just go ahead and deal with the problem. We love you. See it tomorrow right here on morning. Share this with somebody. I know you know somebody.
Starting point is 00:57:19 Guarate it. You know somebody. who needs to watch this lesson. Tell them about it. You can't make them watch, but you can at least tell them about it. See you tomorrow. God bless you. Thank you for watching Morning Manor.
