TRUNEWS with Rick Wiles - Date: September 10, 2026. Lesson 179-2026. Title: The Hiding Is Only a Season

Episode Date: September 10, 2026

In today’s Morning Manna, Rick Wiles and Doc Burkhart conclude Proverbs 28 with a powerful promise for believers living through difficult times. Solomon acknowledges the reality that “when the wic...ked rise, men hide themselves,” but he does not leave the righteous in hiding. The wicked also perish, and “the righteous increase.” This lesson explores why prudent withdrawal under genuine threat is not cowardice, why seasons of wicked ascendancy are temporary, and how God repeatedly turns suppression into multiplication. From Israel under Pharaoh to the persecuted church in Acts, Scripture reveals a consistent pattern: what the enemy attempts to suppress, God can cause to multiply. The hiding is real, but it is not permanent. The season has an end, and God determines when it comes. Starting point is 00:02:16 We're blessed. So let's open our Bibles, maybe your phone app, and turn to Proverbs chapter 28, verse 28. This is the last verse in chapter 28. Tomorrow is Faith Friday. We'll have another lesson on Desperate Faith. And then on Monday, we will begin our study of Proverbs chapter 29. So let's pray and then Dr. Raymond Burckhart, we'll read the word and introduce today's lesson. Almighty God, Father at heaven.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Father, we thank you that we don't have burdens because we cast our cares on you. Father, we thank you that we can rest in Christ. And we thank you that your word is true. Your sons and daughters are gathered here today from many nations in a virtual Bible. study and all of us are hungry for your word. So come Holy Spirit, take your seat at the head of the table and lead this class and teach us Father's Word in Jesus' name, who is the Word. Amen. Amen. Welcome morning man, everyone. Our lesson number today is 179-26, as Rick mentioned. One verse today, but it's the capstone of chapter 28. There's a lot in this first. Let's
Starting point is 00:03:39 it started today, reading from the King James 1st, when the wicked rise, men hide themselves, but when they perish, the righteous increase. Then the Septuagint, in the places of ungodly men, the righteous mourn, but in their destruction, the righteous shall be multiplied. Slightly different wording, same sort of theme there. Proverbs 2828 closes this chapter,
Starting point is 00:04:04 and it does so by returning deliberately to where the chapter's middle section. began. If you recall back in verse 12, it observed that when the wicked rise, a man is hidden. And then here at verse 28, it repeats the observation, almost word for word, and then adds what verse 12 did not supply. So let's read verse 12 again, chapter 28, when righteous men do rejoice, there's great glory, but when the wicked rise, man is hidden. Now, this repetition is not a redundancy. Scripture, especially the Old Testament, uses this bracketing device. It's an observation that's stated, first of all, then developed across a section of material,
Starting point is 00:04:49 and then restated with an addition to mark the boundaries of an argument and to indicate where the resolution lies. So the case was being made in verse 12, and now we have the conclusion. verse 12 states as a condition verse 28 states as a cycle the wicked rise and men hide but the wicked also perish and when they do the righteous
Starting point is 00:05:15 increase verse 12 left the reader inside the hiding with no indication how long it would last well it was just 16 verses verse 28 supplies the term that season ends because those who produced it are themselves subject to the mortality and judgment that governs all men.
Starting point is 00:05:36 So chapter 28 has devoted 28 verses to law, justice, wealth, rulers, oppression, and the moral condition of a nation. And as much application here in the 21st century as it did than Solomon first pin this. Solomon chooses to end it not with a warning but with a horizon. The assurance that the, conditions producing the hiding are just temporary, and that what has been suppressed is going to
Starting point is 00:06:08 multiply when that suppression lives. So the lesson's aim is to give our audience, the Morning Manna students, the perspective, this closing verse applies, a sober realism about seasons of wicked ascendancy, seasons of wicked ascendancy, joined to a settled confidence that such seasons have an end appointed by God rather than by circumstance. So we start off today, when the wicked rise, men hide themselves. The literal translation of the Hebrew in the rising of the wicked, a man hides himself. That verb, satire, is this reflective form that describes a man concealing himself, a deliberate act of self-protection rather than something done to him.
Starting point is 00:06:59 And so that hiding is a decision made by ordinary people who have evaluated and assessed their circumstances and concluded that visibility has become costly. Now, this isn't cowardice or anything. This is wisdom. This series examined that phenomenon at verse 12. The disappearance of the honest from public view when hostile power ascends. We spoke at length about that. Now, those who might otherwise speak, lead, build, or simply live openly become invisible. Instead, they guard their speech, they reduce their exposure, they withdraw from arenas where they can be identified. The proverb, again, assigns no blame to the hiders. Now, notice that. Scripture records David, Rick brought this out in our lesson the other day, David hiding from Saul, Obadiah concealing 100 prophets and caves.
Starting point is 00:07:55 and the early church, you know, meeting in homes rather than in public, and they met in catacombs too. So prudent withdrawal under genuine threat is not cowardice. So don't interpret it that way. But verse 28 it adds to verse 12's observation is that crucial qualifier, the first statement lacked. This is a season. It's not going to be forever.
Starting point is 00:08:21 It's a season. The hiding has a beginning, tied to the rising of the wicked, and it therefore has an end tied to their perishing. And the value of that qualifier, Rick, is considerable for anyone currently living inside such a season.
Starting point is 00:08:38 The condition at the moment feels permanent when you're inside it. That's the nature of the long difficult. But the promise here, and the proverb's closing position in the chapter is Solomon's answer, to exactly that feeling.
Starting point is 00:08:56 It's just a season. Matthew Henry observed that the righteous frequently mistake a long season for a permanent settlement and that the Bible's repeated insistence on the temporality of the wicked ascendancy exists precisely because the experience of living under it argues so persuasive. against believing it. So the theological framework beneath this verse's first half
Starting point is 00:09:33 is the biblical understanding of history as governed, not random. History is governed by God. The conviction that seasons a wicked ascendancy occur within God's rule rather than outside it.
Starting point is 00:09:52 In other words, God in his sovereign wisdom for reasons that we cannot understand and explain allows the wicked to rule for a season but their season has an expiration date and that is the comfort for the church to know that when the wicked is in power it's only for a season
Starting point is 00:10:17 the chapter chapter 28 has established this principle from beginning to in. Verse 2 of chapter 28, named the multiplication of rulers as a consequence of a nation's transgressions against God. In other words, when a country has too many rulers, one president after another,
Starting point is 00:10:49 one prime minister after another, they can't keep anybody in power. That's the consequence of that country's transgression against God. Versus 15 and 17 of chapter 28 looked at predatory rulers under God's evaluation. Verse 10 of chapter 28 speaks about the boomerang principle by which evil returns to its source. Psalm 37 says fret not thyself. because of evildoers, for they shall soon be cut down like the grass and wither as the green herb. So the Psalms repeated counsel is patience, grounded in a known outcome rather than resignation grounded in helplessness.
Starting point is 00:11:47 So if you're living in a country that is currently ruled by the wicked, by rules, ruthless men, women. Be patient. Be patient in the Lord. Their rule, their government has an expiration date. Psalm 73's wrestling, very honest wrestling must be held against it. Asaph's feet had nearly slipped watching the prosperity of the wicked. But the resolution came to his mind and heart. Only in the sanctuary when he, according to verse 17, Psalm 73, understood their end. So only when Asaph went into the house of the Lord that he understood their end. The end was not visible from where he had been standing outside of the temple of the Lord. So when you are in Christ, Christ is our temple today,
Starting point is 00:12:53 when you are in Christ, you properly see the position of the wicked and you know in your heart, you understand their end. So this distinction between what is visible from within a season and what is true about its trajectory is precisely what, Verse 28 is addressing. The hiding is real. The season is genuinely difficult to endure,
Starting point is 00:13:26 but the outcome is nonetheless already determined by God's will. And so the instruction for believers today in such seasons is that seasons have three parts. each one grounded here across chapter 28. First, prudence is permitted. Hiding is not condemned. Okay. If you're hiding in fear, that's one thing. But if you're hiding in wisdom, that's truth.
Starting point is 00:14:02 So second, faithfulness continues in whatever sphere remains available. The Septuant's verse 12 located the community's glory and the help of righteous men, which can be rendered privately when it cannot be rendered publicly. We see this example in places where Christianity is oppressed around the world today. And then third, the season's end is not a matter of hope, but an appointment. And I think that's critical. It's in God's timing. It's in God's timetable.
Starting point is 00:14:36 In Acts chapter 4, verse 29, it gives us this balance that keeps prudence from becoming abandoned, okay? Facing a genuine threat, the disciples prayed not for safety, but that with all boldness, they may speak thy word. And so prudence governs how and when, but it does not govern weather. Okay, that's the key there. It governs the how and wind, but not the weather. We still must speak boldly, but how and when is key. Yes, sir. All right, let's look at the same. second part of verse 28. When they perish, the righteous increase. Who's they? The wicked. When the wicked perish, the righteous increase. Another way of saying it is, in their perishing, the righteous multiply. The righteous are multiplying, not after they perish, but while they
Starting point is 00:15:38 perish. In their perishing, while they are in the state of perishing, the righteous multiply. So if you're waiting on the wicked to completely disappear for the righteous to multiply, you're not getting this. The righteous multiply while the wicked are perishing, in their state of perishing. The Hebrew verb that was used by the King James, Translators, the Hebrew verb is avid to perish, to be destroyed, to be lost. It is stated as a fact, not a possibility. They will perish. They will be destroyed.
Starting point is 00:16:27 They will be lost. It doesn't say may, could, possibly. It treats the perishing of the wicked as the certain. other half of the cycle when their rising began. In other words, half of the cycle, the wicked rise. The second half of a cycle, the wicked perish. And they perish sometimes gradually, but then they have a sudden end. The perishing is gradually, the end is sudden.
Starting point is 00:17:09 But the righteous increase, righteous multiply. The righteous become new. The righteous grow in number. Interestingly, Doc, the verb that's used for increase is the same verb that was used in Genesis 1, verse 28 when God said, be fruitful and multiply. God's people are always fruitful. God's people always multiply. That's one way to know if you're God's people.
Starting point is 00:17:44 Are you multiplying? Are you fruitful? Is your life producing the harvest? Because if you're not pretty, you're not producing? producing a harvest, what are you? It means there's no life. A tree that doesn't produce fruit is what? Useless.
Starting point is 00:18:07 The word increase. It deserves our attention because it says more than the righteous reappear. It doesn't say when the wicked parish, the righteous come out of hiding. It says that they. multiply. Reappearance would suggest that those who hid simply
Starting point is 00:18:36 resumed their visibility. They were in hiding and then they come out. The same number that went in hiding is the same number that comes out. But God says that's not the way it works in my economy. When the wicked perish, when the righteous come out, they've been multiplied.
Starting point is 00:18:55 The righteous emerge in greater number than went into hiding. You know what that says to me, Doc? that when the church is persecuted, when the church has got to go underground, is the greatest multiplication of the church. The church underground, like in China, in North Korea, it is multiplying underground. There'll be a day that Xi Jinping is dead.
Starting point is 00:19:27 There'll be a day that Kim Jong-un is dead. There'll be a day that the Communist Party is gone. And the church in China, the church in North Korea shall come out multiplied. Seasons of suppression have repeatedly produced not the elimination of God's people, but their expansion. Think about the Hebrews under Pharaoh. The more he persecuted them, the more that they multiplied.
Starting point is 00:20:06 And Pharaoh noticed, hey, this isn't working. Right. I'm being really mean to them, and they're just getting bigger in numbers. Think about the church under Roman persecution in the early days of the church. I've mentioned the underground congregations and hostile regimes around the world. Church Father Tertullian, he said that the blood of martyrs is the seed of the church. What was intended to reduce the church instead produced an increase in the church. instead produced an increase in the church.
Starting point is 00:20:55 And tyrants have learned this over centuries. They've tried to stomp out the church, but in their persecution of the church, the church got bigger. Right. The reason is not mysterious. Suppression, persecution clarifies. It removes the nominal, the superficial.
Starting point is 00:21:21 It exposes the counterfeit. It concentrates the genuine. And what remains after that concentration proves more potent than the larger and more diluted body that preceded it. Charles Bridges, Methodist, theologian, you know, Anglican. I correct myself, Charles Bridges was an Anglican vicar. he observed that the righteous who increase after a season of hiding are rarely the same in character as those who entered it because a period of enforced faithfulness under pressure produces a quality of conviction that a life of ease does not manufacture.
Starting point is 00:22:15 So not only is the number increased, Doc, but the character, the quality, of those who come out of persecution has been increased. And the second half of the verse here, Rick, reveals that biblical pattern of reversal. God's got this pattern. He consistently practices, it's his practice of overturning the arrangements of the powerful in favor of those they suppressed.
Starting point is 00:22:54 If you recall in 1st Samuel, chapter 2, You've got Hannah's song, and if you never read this, it's 1st, Andrew chapter 2, verses 4 through 8, The bows of the mighty men are brook, and they that stumbled are girded with strength, He raiseth up the pore out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes. And Mary's declaration repeats it at the announcement of Christ coming. and read it Luke chapter 1 verse 51. He has put down the mighty from their seats and exalted them of low degree.
Starting point is 00:23:35 He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. And so this reversal is announced as the shape of what the incarnation is going to accomplish. So back in Exodus chapter 1, verse 12, it records this pattern like you were mentioning it before Rick. the more they afflicted them, the more that the Egyptians and they were afflicted the Hebrews, the more they multiplied and grew. And we see that pattern addressed in the modern world today too. And so Pharaoh suppression program produced the exact opposite of its intended effect. And the Hebrew of that verse uses the same multiplication vocabulary
Starting point is 00:24:19 that we see right here in verse 28 that we're looking at today. Now Charles Spurgeon observed that, that Herod's death in Acts chapter 12, verse 23, and the multiplying of the gospel in verse 24, stand with this deliberate sequence as well, and that Luke's arrangement is itself a surrogh. The persecutor is buried, that being Herod in verse 23, Acts chapter 12, but the persecutor is buried in one verse and in the very next verse,
Starting point is 00:24:51 and the gospel expands in the next. and so the eschatological horizon completes this pattern too in revelation chapter 11 verse 15 it announces the final form the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our lord and of his christ and he shall reign forever and ever every temporal reversal in scripture is a preview of that ultimate one in the final day And so chapter 28 has looked at corrupt rulers, oppressive systems, unjust gain, and the hiding of the honest. But it ends chapter 28 by insisting that none of these arrangements are permanent because all of them are administered by men who perish, but they're observed by a God who does not. Okay, we're coming to the end of chapter 28. We're going to look at the Septuagint Translation.
Starting point is 00:25:51 King James says, when the wicked rise, men hide themselves, when they perish, the righteous increase. Septuagin says, in the places of ungodly men, the righteous mourn, but in their destruction, the righteous shall be multiplied. What are the differences? The Septuagint replaces the King James hiding with the word mourning, to grieve. that the righteous groan and lament in the places controlled by the ungodly. The King James describes a physical and social response, withdrawal from public view. The subtergent describes an emotional, spiritual response. The righteous grieve over what has become of the place that they inhabit.
Starting point is 00:26:50 the wicked have taken control and so the righteous breathe, they lament, they mourn. Both are true. The King James translation and the Septuagint, together they give a fuller account of life under hostile power. The righteous withdrawal
Starting point is 00:27:13 and they grief. And the grief is not merely for their own circumstances, but for the condition of the country that they live in. So this connects to the Septuagin's translation of verse 12, chapter 28, which described those places as tribes where men are called. So the Septuagint Greek translation throughout the Old Testament consistently frames the wicked man's domain as a location, a place with a character in which the righteous mourn and are endangered.
Starting point is 00:28:07 So this is a theme throughout Proverbs in the Septuagint Translation, as always speaking of the wicked man's domain as a location, specific location. Baptist pastor John Gill noted the connection of mourning back to the prophet Ezekiel and Ezekiel 94 it reads there angels mark the foreheads of
Starting point is 00:28:33 the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof and so grief over a place's corruption is treated as evidence of righteousness rather than as a weakness. In
Starting point is 00:28:49 Ezekiel chapter 9, the marked men who sighed and who cried over the abominations of their city, they were the ones that were preserved from death by their grief. And so, as you noted, Rick, the Septuagin's second half here preserves that multiplication precisely. In their destruction, the righteous shall be multiplied. And it's the same vocabulary like you mentioned before that is used in the Septuagin's Genesis account for the command to multiply, and also in Acts 1224 for the growth of the Word of God. So you've got all three connected here in multiplication.
Starting point is 00:29:34 So put together, both the King James and the Septuagint frame the end of our chapter here, and it's closing with both realism and hope. It doesn't deny that these things happen, but it says it's just a season. There's a hope. The righteous hide, and while hiding, they grieve. or the ungodly hold their places. And when those places change hands, what was suppressed does not merely return,
Starting point is 00:30:04 but we have the promise of multiplication, Rick. Amen. I guess I close this chapter 28 with the thought, are we modern Christians, are we grieving over our nation's sins? I don't see much. grieving, doc. In fact, I actually see Christians in my country boasting versus sense. Yeah, there is, there really is no grieving in the Western church over the
Starting point is 00:30:41 corruption and sin, not just in politics and culture in general, but in the church itself. There is no, you know, brokenness. You know, there used to be a time when I was a young man, which seems like 100 years ago now, that we would come around the altar at the front of the church and grieve and pray over our nation. Churches don't do that anymore. We just see the church trying to influence itself in the world around it, trying to adapt worldly methods and worldly programs
Starting point is 00:31:21 and everything else in order to try to accomplish God's kingdom. when actually what God is looking for is grieving hearts that will pray for a return of righteousness first at the house of God, but then among the nations as well. And in a way, there are some who grieve Rick. They're in hiding. They're in hiding right now. You know, because grieving's not popular. Grieving is not, you know, you don't get a lot of social media attraction on grieving.
Starting point is 00:31:54 You don't get a lot of views and repost on grieving. In some places in America, I can't talk for other countries, but grieving over your nation's sins is actually seen as unpatriotic. Yes. What are you talking about? This is our country. You better get the flag out and wave the flag. Don't you dare say that we're ungodly?
Starting point is 00:32:19 We are ungodly as a nation. We are crossways with God. We are in rebellion against God. And that is condemned by those who are clinging to a religious nationalism. It's not kingdom-minded theology. It's a nationalistic theology. Anyhow, the real righteous hide when the wicked are in power. But they come out multiplied.
Starting point is 00:32:57 That's our hope. That's our promise. Well, we did it. We finished another chapter. And tomorrow is Faith Friday. We'll have a lesson in desperate faith. Then on Monday, get ready. We're going to start chapter 29.
Starting point is 00:33:10 We have 29 and 30 and 31 left in Book of Proverbs. I hate to see it come to a close, but every good thing has an ending. And I hope you've been blessed by it. It's going to take us. up to one year of studying the Book of Proverbs. Never imagined we would spend this much time, but it's been worth it, and I hope you have been blessed by it. So we'll see you tomorrow. God bless. Take care and be ready for Holy Communion tomorrow. God bless you.
