Well, good morning. Welcome to Morning Manna. We're delighted to have you with us today, and we are starting a new chapter. Today, we move on to Chapter 9 in the book of Proverbs. We're going to study verses 1 through 6. Let's pray. Invite the Holy Spirit, then Doc's going to read the scriptures, and he and I will jump into these amazing nuggets of wisdom. Almighty God, our Father, and God, our Father,
in heaven. Father, thank you for this wonderful day. Father, we humbly ask for the presence of
your Holy Spirit to guide us and lead us in the study of your word in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Amen. Welcome to Morning Manna. Morning Manna is a ministry of faith and values here in Virobeach,
Florida, and we're privileged to have you here with us, no matter where you are around the world and across
the U.S. and Canada. We get together every weekday morning.
morning at 8 a.m. and study the Word of God together. And we open up a new chapter in
Proverbs today, Proverbs chapter 9. And I'll be reading verses 1 through 6 here. So if you've got
your Bibles, I'm reading from the King James today. And we're starting out here, verse 1.
Wisdom hath built her house. She hath ewn out her seven pillars. She hath killed her
beast. She hath mingled her wine. She hath also furnished her table.
she has sent forth her maidens she crieth upon the highest places of the city
whoso is simple let him turn in hither as for him that wanteth understanding she
saith to him come eat of my bread and drink of the wine which i have mingled
forsake the foolish and live and go in the way of understanding god bless the reading of his
word today great passage here it is
new chapter new things to learn in the book of proverbs hey doc i just noticed looking at the screen
since i changed chairs and i lowered myself i had to adjust my my screen but it looks like i build a roof
over your head so i'm i'm keeping the rain from falling on you you notice here you notice
a roof over your head so from my angle it looks like i've built a roof that's hanging you got an
overhang over your head.
So, just keep the rain off my head.
Yeah, people wondering what it is.
That's why it's not a roof.
It's just my screen.
So let's start with verse one.
Wisdom has built her house.
King James says she hath hewned out her seven pillars.
Modern English, she has carved out her seven pillars.
So we begin with the first segment of Proverbs 9-1,
Wisdom hath built her house.
So this opens chapter 9 with another powerful personification of wisdom.
And this is highlighting her creative, constructive nature,
that she builds a place of order,
a place of stability, a place of lasting refuge.
She is meticulously designing and building her structure.
Her house, so what is Wisdom's house?
It represents her domain.
And in her domain, there is, as I said, order, stability, learning,
security and she she desires you to know that she has painstakingly constructed this house with
purpose excuse me compare wisdom's house with the house of the immoral woman
in chapter seven wisdom's house is a place of refuge yes
The immoral woman's house was the gateway to the stairways to hell.
That's right.
Remember that?
Yes.
The chamber of death, the stair steps that lead to hell to show.
But wisdom has a house, and it's a place of refuge.
It's a place of security.
It's a place of order and stability.
So you've got to compare these.
images in proverbs you move on to another chapter and there's a structure and we tend not to
connect it to the structure in the preceding chapter well two chapters back chapter seven
so wisdom gives us an image of a house that affirms life
It stabilizes our life.
It brings order to our life.
It gives purpose to our life.
And so a person guided by wisdom lives a life that is characterized by purpose and stability and order and the building up of all that is good.
but if you go over to the house of the immoral woman she has deception and folly and chaos and destruction
there's death at her house there's life in the house of wisdom so wisdom has a house that has it's a place of a warm welcome
Folly's house is a place of entrapment and ruin.
The act of construction,
the fact that wisdom has constructed a house,
that is a demonstration of two things,
her authority,
she has the authority to build his house,
and number two her benevolence
her good intentions towards those who seek her
what it says is wisdom saying
I myself have supervised the construction
of a sanctuary for you
a safe place
somewhere you can go to be nourished
your soul will find
nourishment and
strength and encouragement
so the fact that she built a house
that implies intentional
design and effort
she had to
she intended to build the structure
she laid the foundation
the foundation was laid at the creation of the world
remember she was there
she put the pillars in place
yes
this is the same wisdom that put pillars
in space to hold up the earth
there are invisible pillars
beneath our planet
just because you can't see them
doesn't mean they're not there the Bible says they're there
if an entity
a force can create
invisible pillars
to hold up a planet
can she not build a foundation to hold up your life amen that's like a no-brainer
that's easy for wisdom to do so now she she has hewned out or carved out her seven pillars these are her
pillars seven pillars obviously what do we see seven perfection
perfection completeness right divine order anytime seven is in the bible it represents
completeness perfection divine order yes and the fact that she unit out more times
than not about 90% of the time when you see that word that same Hebrew word
there for you throughout the Old Testament it's carving into stone or like
carving out a wine press or carving out a pillar in this case but it's it's a
labor intensive process it's not just something casual that's been done it's
not a bunch of rocks stacked on top of one another but it's something that has
been formed by hand someone has meticulously gone and and chiseled something out cut
something out of stone and so this is permanent this is it required much effort
much labor to create these seven pillars good point doc so what I see what you
just explained I see two things first of all the carving the hewing out
that's a lot of labor you don't carve rock and not sweat carving into rock
whether it's granite or marble whatever it is it is labor intensive there has to be a design
you you can't just be carving and chisling in the rock and not have a plan
you chip off a big piece and how you fix it you can't there's there's an there's a
intentional design when you're carving there is intense labor it is time intensive it takes a lot of
time to carve rock and then the other thing i see doc is a carved rock is a carved rock is
permanent it's not going to rot it's not going to rust when you go to the Holy Land and you see
this you see this in Israel you see it in Jordan and of course if he traveled to other places
in Turkey other countries of the Mediterranean you see it the ancient ruins the carved
pillars are still standing there.
Yes.
And they're 2,500, 3,000 years old and they are still standing.
Now, those pillars were carved by humans.
Eventually, they'll topple.
But pillars carved by wisdom will never topple.
Amen.
So the seven pillars of wisdom represent the foundation.
stable, all-encompassing, comprehensive principles
upon which Wisdom's house is built.
It establishes her house on unshakable ground.
You can be certain it will never fall.
It will not shake. It will never tremble.
It is rock solid.
so what are these foundational principles just the word of god it's the truth in
in god's word it's his moral principles it's his righteousness it's his holiness
for us it means wisdom's truth is not based on shifting sand it's not based on the fleeting
opinions of mankind
over the centuries.
Human
philosophy changes
century by century.
Yeah. But God's word is
the same. And it will be the
same tomorrow. It never changes.
The
seven pillars of Wisdom's house
confirm stability,
permanence,
security,
a place of refuge a safe place of refuge
not just a place of refuge it's a safe place of refuge
now nine verse 9 2
chapter 9 verse 2
she have killed her beast
she have mingled her wine
She hath also furnished her table.
Modern English says she has prepared her meat.
She has mixed her wine.
She has also set her table.
What this is portraying is the costly,
generous nature of wisdom's preparation,
for your life.
That she offers
substantial, rich,
life-giving, spiritual nourishment
to those who seek her and accept her.
It's describing the feast.
There's rich nourishment,
there's joyful truth,
there's an open invitation.
this feast
is of great significance
it's not it's not meager
it's not frugal
there are no hot dogs on this
buffet table
there's carved
beef and turkey
and lamb
there's the best of everything
right this is a feast so god's wisdom is like a banquet table
imagine the most beautiful banquet table you've ever experienced
the most expensive buffet you've ever been to just abundance of choices and food
and the quality and everything that's involved with it the most excellent
tasting food that you can have that's where wisdom is on this wisdom provides a banquet table
that is abundant and you you there's no reason to starve
Doc is this what David was referring to when he said he prepares a table for me in the
presence of my enemies oh no it very well could be yes well what does David say about God
God's word in Psalm 119.
Your, thy word is a lamp unto my feet, a light into my path.
It's a very long Psalm.
Right.
And it's all about the word of God.
Yes.
So if David said that God prepares a table for him in the presence of his enemies,
that table is an expensive feast.
that his enemies had to watch him eat well was david referring to his love for god's word
and now we're back to to wisdom amen wisdom prepares a feast for you i like that connection
yeah so this is a a rich satisfying life-giving meal
no greater meal than the Lord's supper.
If you're going to feast at the highest level,
then let it be at the Lord's table.
Her preparation is meticulous, it's generous.
What's being served over there at the immoral woman's house?
nothing but death.
The act of providing this feast
highlights wisdom's benevolence
her deep love, her deep concern
for every person, her desire
to provide nourishment for every person's soul.
Amen.
That's in the heart of wisdom.
It's substantial.
This is a meal that's substantial and satisfying.
It addresses and it fulfills the deepest hunger of the soul.
Doc, what is
Proverbs 626
Look that up
Proverbs 626
626
For by means of a hoarish woman
A man is brought to a piece of bread
And the adulteress will hunt for the precious life
There you go
So over at the
Emoral Woman's house you get a piece of bread
but over at Wisdom's house you get a luscious feast
wow
praise God that's good Rick
what a comparison
you're starving over there at the immoral woman's house
she promises everything
and delivers nothing
except death
starvation of your soul
but wisdom delivers what she promises
she backs it up
this is a banquet of truth
a banquet of knowledge
a banquet of righteousness
she have mingled her wine
it means
she's mixed her wine
what does that mean so in ancient times and i'm sure still done in many places of the world today
it was a common practice to prepare wine by mixing it with spices and water
to create a refined drink i look it's no different than putting a mint leaf in your iced
right ice tea is good but put some men in it it's really good so she has mingled her wine
again there's careful deliberate intentional preparation of the wine the wine the wine represents
her intoxicating, refreshing, joyful nature.
She's saying, come and partake of my wine.
It will make you joyful.
Again, go over to the Immoral Woman's House.
What is she serving over there?
Piece of bread. You get toast.
a crouton
I guarantee if she gave you wine
is bitter
and then it says
she has furnished her table
I mean she set the table
the
the
plates and the bowls
the silverware the cups
everything's there
she has set her table
that's a welcoming act
if you set the table you're you're preparing for the arrival of important guests
right she's saying the feast you know when you're invited to a meal when do you know it's time
to sit down when they set the table so she has set her table that means we're about to eat the invitation
is to all come on come to the table i'm ready to serve it talks about wisdoms her hospitality her
generosity her eagerness to share these are all her virtues but again go over to the the immoral woman's
house she was predatory she was deceptive
She was hunting down her guest.
Wisdom's inviting in her guest.
The immoral woman was hunting her guest.
Those are two different pictures.
Which table do you want to eat at?
So we're being told that Wisdom's Feast is a communal event.
you don't sit down at the table alone you sit with your brothers and sisters who are also seeking
wisdom you partake of the meal in fellowship with others yes wow i've just came across another
verse here rick that goes right with it is proverbs 417 we studied a few weeks back
for they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.
There it goes.
There you go.
That's what they're serving over at her house.
They'd be a moral woman's house.
The bread of wickedness and the wine of violence.
Wow.
Jesus Lord.
We're getting back to this feast.
The feast served by wisdom.
She set the table.
That conveys a sense.
of urgency
the meal is ready to be served
what is frustrating
what is frustrating
hurtful
insulting
to a person who is prepared a great feast
set the table and nobody comes to the table
you just said to the host
all this effort that you've gone through all this expense it doesn't have the same meaning to me
it's not important to me it's not important but wisdom's looking for those who say it is important
i'm going to sit down i'm going to i'm going to i'm going to feast i'm going to eat i'm going to
go ahead doc no i hadn't thought about that have you ever had a uh a time where you
you've prepared a meal, even like a barbecue or a nice meal, and you had invited someone and they either didn't show or didn't even call you to let you know they weren't coming.
You'd made preparation and everything.
You'd invited them.
You were expecting them.
But they didn't even acknowledge that they couldn't make it or that there were some emergency or anything.
Right.
Disrespectful.
Yeah.
It's very disrespectful.
And so how does it make you feel?
Oh, you, it's not that they're rejecting your food.
They're rejecting you.
Yes.
So that's how wisdom feels when humans don't show up at the table.
Right.
I know when my grandmother set the table, it meant you better get in here and eat.
Okay, she didn't hang around all night long waiting on you to show up.
If you didn't show up, she put the leftovers in the refrigerator and washed the dishes and, hey, kitchen's not open until tomorrow.
So wisdom's looking at the way humans react to her invitation.
she's excited she serves those who show up those who don't she just shakes her head and says
whatever do it your way see how it works out well it's not going to work out eventually it's not
things are going to go wrong in the lives of people who don't seek wisdom then in verse three
it says she has sent forth her maidens
she cries upon the high places
the highest places of the city
she has sent out her maidens
she calls from the highest
places of the city
what is she doing
she's inviting
the maidens are sent out to bring in the people she's she's going to the highest places the highest hilltops
the highest buildings and she's shouting dinner dinner come and get it there's never a charge
there's never a fee there's never an entry price there's no gate
admission just come her heart desires to feed wisdom has a good heart wisdom desires to feed
humans and she's preparing this meal every day and she's shouting but the meal is ready
so she sends forth her maidens right to send forth her maidens right to send forth
you had to take action you had to give a command first of all you had to have people in this case maidens okay she had people
to who responded to her instructions then she gave them an instruction she sent forth
she dispatched her maidens so this is her
proactive
desire to
invite people guests
to her banquet
she doesn't
just passively wait to see if anybody
shows up
no she makes the effort
to bring bring them in
bring them in
Doc where does that show up in the new
covenant
it's
the father himself
when it comes to salvation in the parables of jesus what did the what did the host the king do who was
holding a banquet don't go out into the highways and byways bring in anybody to the wedding feast
i'll even provide what what in the parable the drink the clothing everything but in the parable
why did the king
why did he change his
instruction that it then became
just go out into the highways and byways
find anybody bring them in
what brought about that change
because the original guest
refused to show up
they were making excuses
I got to go try out
a horse I got to go look at a field
I bought
I'm getting married
you know
it's not like these things snuck up on them the people that got received an engraved invitation from the king
yes they rejected it they threw it in the trash can and said i've got other things to do
and the king and this is in the parables of jesus so the king was insulted he was enraged
because they rejected him not his feast that they're rejecting they rejecting him so then he tells
his servants in the palace, just go out, go down the road, go to the small country roads, go
every place, whoever you see, bring them in, compel them to come.
He had a feast and he was determined to have people eating a feast.
So here wisdom sends forth her maidens, calling loudly.
dinner's on the table
the maidens are her messengers
her agents
and they are sent forth to carry this
invitation to the public
again this is not just to the church
it's not just to the Hebrew people
not just to the Jews
it's not just to the Christians
it is to the human race
mankind
so who are these
maidens, they are preachers, teachers,
prophets, messengers.
God has always had messengers.
In every generation, he's had messengers saying,
dinner's on the table.
Yes.
The old Pentecostal hymn, come and dine.
Yes, it's supper time.
man we saying that a lot come and dine god's always crying out dinner's on the table
so what we see here is wisdom taking the initiative to actively pursue human souls
and expressing a profound heartfelt desire for fellowship
and communion with humans
God likes to talk
do you get that
your heavenly father
likes to talk
and he's
pursuing people every day
say hey you want talk
he likes to talk
he likes to talk
He likes to talk.
That's why you should schedule a time to meet with him every day, just to talk, just to talk with him.
You express your thoughts to him, he expresses his thought to you.
It's called communication.
It's called a conversation.
Yes.
Have a conversation with your father.
Oh, but wisdom is out here sending forth her maidens, Christ.
crying loudly in the public from the highest places, dinner is ready, come, everybody is welcome.
But where is the immoral woman?
She is lurking.
She's hiding.
She's concealing herself.
She's preparing to ambush her victims.
Why isn't the immoral woman out there visibly, publicly declaring,
her invitation to her home.
Why does the immoral person do it in darkness?
Wisdom sends forth her message in daylight.
A life of wisdom is a life that is actively sought by God.
and he uses messengers as a means to call people to himself all doc and i are as far as i'm concerned
we are messengers that's all i'm trying to do every day with this lesson send a message your
father wants he's looking for you he wants to talk that's our message every day your father's looking for you
He'd like to talk with you.
Father is always seeking fellowship with humanity.
And Father will go to great lengths to invite people into his house.
She cries upon the high places of the city.
A cry is
a loud, clear, urgent proclamation.
I mean, it, it rings.
You hear a cry.
You can't ignore a cry.
A cry is more powerful than a shout.
A shout comes from your lungs,
but a cry comes from your heart.
Yes.
There's emotion in a cry.
So she's at the highest places of the city,
the prominent visible places,
hilltops, gates, public squares, buildings.
Why?
She desires her voice to be carried far and wide.
Again, we compare wisdom with the immoral woman.
She doesn't cry.
She whispers.
And she whispers deception in corners, in dark places,
and invite you to go deeper into darkness.
Wisdom's message is for the entire human race,
not a chosen people.
It is for everybody.
it's not private it's not exclusive it's to the general public that's why she cries from the highest places
verse four whoso is simple let him turn in hither as for him that one of understanding she saith to him
modern English is whoever is simple let him turn in here whoever is void of understanding
she says to him and we're going to get to what what she says
who is simple again she's talking to the naive the inexperienced and those people
who are easily influenced and persuaded by other voices
she is speaking to those who can be duped by the immoral woman.
She's speaking to those who have not made a commitment to follow the Lord.
There are people, a lot of people who've prayed the sinner's prayer,
you know, whatever that is, it's not in the Bible,
but they've prayed the sinner's prayer.
but they never made a commitment to become a disciple right big difference so if you haven't made a
decision to become a disciple then you're over there in that naive simpleton corner because it
means you're available to be duped let him turn in that that is a direct urgent invitation to the simple
to enter into wisdom's house and it's an act of benevolence she's saying i'm making this invitation
for your own good, your own benefit, your own protection.
She doesn't condemn the simple.
She doesn't shame the simple.
She has loving compassion on them.
She knows that there's another force out there,
this immoral woman, what she represents,
which is temptation, foolishness.
She knows that this other person is out there
lurking in the darkness
looking for these simpletons.
That's right.
Look, these simpletons can have
three college degrees.
Doesn't mean they're uneducated.
If you are not in Christ,
then you're a simpleton.
And you're vulnerable to be deceived.
And the devil knows it.
so the again we go back to the immoral woman she's predatory she prays upon the simple
she tracks down the naive she lays a trap for them
so what do we learn here we learn that the path to wisdom begins with the recognition of our own simplicity
were all simpletons at one time all of us were simpletons but along the way we made a decision
we're going to get on the right road we're going to pursue wisdom and remember how this began
whoever's simple let him turn in here whoever is void of understanding she says to him
as for him that wanteth understanding she says to him
this is the simpleton the wanting of understanding void of understanding
the person that lacks moral discernment lacks moral insight
doesn't have a foundation of morality doesn't have a moral compass
she says to him this is a direct personal message it's an intentional address see she was she was on the rooftop she was on the high tops of the city she's talking to everybody but now she's talking to one yes she's talking to the one she's talking to the one who lacks understanding yes
She's on the hilltop looking at a whole crowd, and then her eyes fix on one person, and she says, I'm talking to you.
Yes.
Almost like her eyes lock on to that one simple person there.
Yes, I'm talking to you.
Do you want understanding?
The invitation is there.
Do you want understanding?
Respond to the invitation.
Respond to the invitation.
so doc she meets us where we are yes so it's not it's it's a first of all it's a general call
but it's also a personal call just like salvation salvation has a general call call going to all
the world and preach the gospel to every creature and yet the invitation is personal to every single
individual and as i said she meets you where you are meaning you don't have to
You don't have to meet a laundry list of qualifications to enter into her house.
She's out in public asking you to come in.
It would be like somebody inviting you.
Imagine you're walking down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C.
And somebody comes out from the White House,
locks eyes on you and says,
the president would like to have dinner with you.
Me?
Yes, you.
I'm not dressed.
I'm in shorts and sandals.
I'm not dressed for dinner with the president.
It doesn't matter.
Come as you are.
Just come in.
He's requested your presence.
Would you go in?
of course you would and you're made to feel at home this is the way wisdom is wisdom saying
look i'll meet you as you are you don't have to clean yourself up just come into my house for dinner
things will change in your life you'll get a new look as we grow and then verse five
what does she say come eat of my bread and drink of the wine which i have mingled
doc this is we're at holy communion yes we're back to bread and wine
and rick there's significance to this too in that goes all the way to mccelzeck
that bread and wine are associated with making a covenant yes agreeing to
a covenant together and so not only is wisdom inviting you to the banquet table not only is wisdom
inviting you to partake of that wisdom but now wisdom says i desire to make a covenant with you
an agreement with you a contract with you come eat of my bread drink of my wine
the wine that has been mingled
I'm not going to I can't speak at length about this certain Christian denominations
at Holy Communion mingle their wine with water yes there's a reason for it you know
churches that don't who don't practice that tradition they don't understand it but
the churches that do they have a very sincere reason for it so come
Come. Come is an urgent command. It's a welcoming invitation. Come. It's not an order. I said come. That's not how she says it. She says it with a smile. Come. Come. Come on in. Come in and have dinner with us. It's an invitation to everybody who needs wisdom and understanding.
prudence and discretion eat of my bread life-giving spiritual nourishment the bread in my view
yes in this verse it means the truth of god the principles of the kingdom the
the sustenance that's essential for life in the kingdom.
But the bread, to me, represents the flesh of Jesus Christ.
Absolutely. Jesus himself said, I am the bread of life.
This is my flesh.
So come.
Wisdom is saying, come.
Eat of the flesh of your Savior.
Dine and joy.
what we're being taught here is a life of wisdom is a life of nourishment spiritual nourishment
and you will be satisfied you will be sustained your hunger will be satisfied
and drink of the wine which I have mingled.
In other words, participate, enjoy the refreshment that I have provided you.
What's the mingling here?
Careful, deliberate, intentional preparation.
of a drink for your refreshment, for your nourishment,
a drink that will bring happiness to you,
that will lift your spirit,
create an atmosphere of celebration.
But what's going on over there at the Emoral Woman's house?
She's putting people into a stupor.
She's drugging them.
yeah she mingled herd wine with drugs to put you into a stupor so that you'll just go deeper into
the sin but over at wisdom's house there's a celebration there's joy we're having a party
and she has mingled her wine with flavors to make life better happier more enjoyable
verse six forsake the foolish and live and go in the way of understanding in other words
leave your simple ways leave your simple ways and live walk in the ways of understanding
them leave the ways of the simpleton that is a direct urgent unequivocal imperative
sent to those who are naive simple reckless saying abandon the way you live
forsake it throw it away ditch it don't ever look back and never think about it again
amen forsake it for what reason so that you may live
to forsake something is a decisive deliberate separation
and in this case she's saying you need to make a deliberate decision to separate
ways and if you do so you will live it's a promise the act of separation and turning away from
foolishness is not a loss but a gain the loss is to stay in the foolishness
go in the way of understanding again another imperative delivered with a positive force and go go in the way of
understanding forsake forsake your foolish ways and now the instruction is and go in the way of understanding
the way of understanding is the lifestyle the course of living that is guided by wisdom
so go it's it's it's a instruction for action
don't don't sit there and think about it go get up walk take an active intentional
journey on another road if you stay on this road of foolishness it leads to death to destruction
to ruination get off this road go over here this road leads to life well doc that's a
that's my message here for today is the beginning of chapter nine this is going to be a good
chapter yes and we'll be picking back up on this chapter on the thursday edition of morning manna so we
invite you to come back here right in early eight o'clock tomorrow morning to catch our next edition of
our bible class and so we encourage you to share this content with others and if you ever miss
one of the episodes you can always look at the archives here on faith and values.com
Plus, we are also sharing this content on multiple social media channels.
And anything you can do to help us with that, we would certainly appreciate it.
And so, Rick, any final words before we depart for this Wednesday edition of Morning Manna?
No, I love teaching the word.
And I am so grateful that there are people who come every day to hear me teach.
And it just means everything to me.
A teacher without a class has nothing.
And so you are my motivation to get up every day and prepare for morning manna.
If I could, I would just do morning manna all day long.
It is fun.
It'd be like a teach-a-learning.
Yeah.
You imagine a teach-a-thon?
Doc, just from the time we get up until we go to bed, we're just teaching and teaching and teaching.
I would see that would be fun of me.
way they used to do the old camp meetings rick i mean they would start early morning i mean early
morning like six o'clock and uh and just teach all day long so yes uh people don't have the patience
for that nowadays and so but boy that would be a fun thing to do sometime it would be
everybody be blessed enjoy your day we'll be back here tomorrow god bless you we love you
Thank you.
