Thank you, and God bless you for joining us today here on the live edition of Morning Manna
Starting point is 00:01:10 on Faith and Values.com. We are continuing our study in Proverbs. Proverbs chapter 10 is where we pick up today, and we're going to be focusing on the first five verses today. We've already prayed asking for the Lord's Wisdom. to his word let's read the word together and i would encourage you if when you have your bibles when the opportunity exists to read the word of god out loud it reinforces the your mind it creates new pathways in your mind for the word of god read it out loud uh i joke around uh people ask
Starting point is 00:01:48 how can i hear the voice of god i simply say read the word of god out loud you'll you'll hear it plain enough. So picking up chapter 10, verse one, the Proverbs of Solomon. Notice we have a transitional phrase here. Why son maketh a glad father, but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother. Treasures of wickedness profit nothing, but righteousness delivereth from death. The Lord will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish, but he casteth away the substance of the wicked. He becomes poor that dealeth with a slack hand, but the hand of the diligent makeeth rich. He that gathers in summer is a wise son, but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causes shame. God bless the reading of his word today.
Starting point is 00:02:39 Amen. Verse 1, chapter 10, verse 1. The Proverbs of Solomon, a wise son, makeeth a glad. father, but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother. So we'll begin with the first segment, the Proverbs of Solomon, a wise son, make a glad father. This marks a very distinct literary division in the book of Proverbs. The first nine chapters were about. what is wisdom what's the antithesis of wisdom
Starting point is 00:03:26 foolishness how do we how do we avoid being ensnared by foolishness now we get to chapter 10 and there's a there's a very dramatic shift it it shifts from exhortation to seek wisdom to avoid foolishness And now we're being told, study the wisdom of Solomon, the Proverbs of Solomon. This is the first time now we see Solomon's name declared as the author of this book. So Solomon begins, it's interesting, he begins with the family unit. father mother child and so what's the first lesson that we see here is that wisdom is not some abstract theory some wispy ideal in the clouds no it's it's lived out on the street level
Starting point is 00:04:41 in the house in the family unit it begins in the home that's the message here a wise son this could be a wise daughter it's not it's not gender specific a wise son is one who not only learns wisdom but applies it in life obedience humility godly fear we're being told that wise children children are the parents' joy. Why? Because it validates the father and mother's upbringing, their instruction. It shows the fruit of their parenting skills, of their character. This is a joy. A wise son, a wise son. daughter is a joy to the parents this is this is not um and this is not just some surface level happiness this is deep deep gladness in the soul the parents delight to see their own values in their
Starting point is 00:06:05 children you could um you could say that this this father in verse one also symbolizes our heavenly father who rejoices who finds joy when he sees his children walking in wisdom Keep this in mind every day, just as you desire your children to walk in wisdom and give you joy, your Heavenly Father desires you to walk in wisdom and bring him joy. That's a sobering thought for all of us as adults. Are we bringing joy to our Heavenly Father? in this case a wise son represents the crown the crown jewel of the household that this is a this is an offspring that's bringing honor strength to the family name the Hebrew word Chakam
Starting point is 00:07:36 It's not And wisdom here is not just in intelligence, IQ But it's The child's skill In godly living A son, a daughter Who instinctively makes
Starting point is 00:08:03 good decisions lives an upright life and so this first verse in chapter 10 it's teaching us that there is there are generational blessings that are passed down through families through generations And a life of wisdom not only blesses the individual whose wives, who seeks the Lord, who pursues wisdom and understanding, but that person's pursuit of wisdom impacts the entire family. That's right. But we come to the second part. of the verse but but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother so the wise son is the joy the father but the foolish son is the heaviness of his mother so you know what when you have this
Starting point is 00:09:20 conjunction but it says it's saying okay so the first part of this sentence is wonderful. However, there's another side to this sentence. You've got joy versus grief, wisdom versus folly. The foolish son is not only unwise, but morally dull obstinate rebellious stubborn resistant to instruction this doesn't mean this this is not stupidity it's not dumb is not you know like hey got a dumb something no that's not what to say this is saying this is saying this is a child that is a child that is rebellious stubborn refuses to be instructed in what is right they're far more difficult to to parent aren't they yes because now you got to get you got to get to the root of this stubbornness what is it what caused it where did it come into the child this is you know this is where a parent you know you
Starting point is 00:11:06 can't use the imperative teaching method imperative meaning you you will do what i say you must obey me i order you that's not going to work with this kid this kid's already rebelling against it you this is a son a daughter you got to sit down with and say i'd like to see things from your point of view what is it about you that you don't you don't like this particular teaching i have these these values what is it help me understand you i want to understand you i don't know you're dealing with somebody here that has a roadblock in their heart in their mind maybe you can get through it maybe you can turn this this child but this son the first son's a blessing the second son is not a curse listen first sons are blessing but this one's not a curse he's a
Starting point is 00:12:11 burden he's a heavy burden he brings sorrow not gladness I mean, we all have people in our extended family. It can be children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces. We have both examples in our families, right? We have son that we look at and go, wow, they're just living their lives so well, so proud of them. And then you have others, you go, what went wrong? What happened?
Starting point is 00:12:50 I love this one so much, but what happened? why are they acting this way? We all have them. What's the difference here, the father and the mother? Why did Solomon split the two? Why didn't he just say a wife's son is a father and mother's joy and and a foolish son is a father and mother's burden? He split it. I think the reason is that mothers represent tenderness. Affection, a tender affection.
Starting point is 00:13:39 That's not to say that a father doesn't, but the mother is the, you know, the sweet, loving, nurturing, member of the family. And I think this is showing us that the mother is impacted differently than the father. The mother is going to be hurt emotionally. Right. That's not to say the father doesn't have feelings about the son. Of course, he's upset, but he's, the father is, is obviously going to come out of it from the more logical side saying, so I don't know why you're doing this. Why are you making these stupid decisions? Why are you living this way? The mother is going to be weeping and crying over the son's foolish lifestyle, the pain that he's bringing into his
Starting point is 00:14:50 own life, his own family, and to the rest of the extended family. So the mother has this heaviness of heart, deep emotional grief, a heavy spirit, a sorrow that cannot be shaken. There are mothers and grandmothers right now in this class that are saying, yes, I know that feeling. I have that heaviness or a member of my family right now. The father feels dishonor, but the mother feels heartbreak. the parents differently. Shame to the father, sorrow to the mother. There's an echo of Esau's marriages in this proverb. Genesis 26, verse 35 says Esau's marriages were grief to the mind of Isaac and Rebecca.
Starting point is 00:16:07 Yeah. Isn't that interesting? Doc, there's nothing new under the sun. There's been family since the Garden of Eden, and there's been family trouble since the Garden of Eden. Yep. And you're not experiencing anything new that people didn't experience 3,000, 4,000, 5,000 years ago. he saw his marriages brought grief to the minds of his father and mother
Starting point is 00:16:48 he married wrong okay simple as that so what we're learning here is there's a communal consequence of foolishness one person's full choices make ripples throughout the family they cause pain to the people who love them you can't keep your foolishness to yourself that that's something foolish people don't understand they don't understand why their family members are hurting disappointed by the decisions, the lifestyles that they're making, the way that they're living. Mothers intercede for their children and their grandchildren.
Starting point is 00:17:53 I, you know, I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for my grandmother's prayers. Amen. I'm in the same boat, Rick. I went wrong. I went in the wrong direction at about age 15. And I was stayed on the wrong path for 10 years until I was 25. I was just two months short of my 25th birthday when I got saved. But for those 10 years, I caused my grandmother great pain. My mother was gone at that point.
Starting point is 00:18:45 My parents were divorced. But I caused my grandmother great pain. She saw me go astray. But she stayed in intercessory prayer for me. And my grandfather did too. So the parents, the grandparents, their intercession, their burden for their child, there's a heaviness in their spirits. This also, Doc, you know, I said earlier that the father can represent the Heavenly Father. part of verse one the mother can also represent the church right yes and several commentators
Starting point is 00:19:46 line up with that right so um you know you need the there are people to think that you can't you know the ideal family of course is a child raised by a father and a mother uh but in you know a lot of problems in homes today if there is either the father's absent or the mother's absent um generally the father but uh and we try to do the same thing in christian circles too we try to uh you know uh try to raise ourselves without a father god the father or try to raise ourselves without the instruction of a mother the church these two go hand in hand The church has genuine influence and authority on the instruction and how people live for God. But there's a lot of people that would prefer not to have that kind of instruction.
Starting point is 00:20:45 I want to worship God my way. Well, there's some, you know, I don't blame you for wanting that, but God raised up to church for instruction, for edification, for fellowship. That's why we get together here every day. this is the mother instructing you today so the early church the you know the first i don't 400 500 600 years the early church referred to the church the global church the worldwide church as the mother right the mother church there are still denominations today around the world that refer to the church as the mother. The mother is to nurture the children.
Starting point is 00:21:39 And so the purpose of the church is to teach to children how to walk in the fear of the Lord. And so that's what we have in this verse. The main message of verse one is that foolishness doesn't only harm the foolishness. it's a source of grief to the entire household and to the community everybody suffers for someone's foolishness but the same is true about wisdom wisdom blesses the family it blesses the community verse two treasures of wickedness profit nothing but righteousness deliver from death the Hebrew word here of treasures of wickedness it several words together Hebrew words together it literally means storehouses of injustice oh that's the meaning
Starting point is 00:22:55 storehouses of injustice It means wealth gathered by dishonest means. Fevery, deception, greed, oppression, treasures of wickedness, storehouses of injustice. It is a warning against ill-gotten gain, money, earned through fraud, greed, exportation, corruption, blackmail, extortion. Storehouses of injustice profit you nothing. These storehouses can have short-term benefit in this life, but they have no eternal value in fact they bring eternal loss
Starting point is 00:24:06 and yet people save them up people save it up a treasure storehouse yes i had really hasn't uh hadn't thought about that today rick but people save it up they save up their wickedness yes they're injustice the way they treat people the way they mistreat people the way they take advantage of people the way they deceive people people you know deception deception comes in many forms you know we we ordinarily think of deception as you know a guy scheming and plotting i'm going to get this one i'm going to get this one i'm going to get this money out of this man or woman something like that no deception can come through very pleasant conversations and relationships and the person is deceiving you the
Starting point is 00:25:13 whole time just what's the deception I like you that's the deception yeah that's the deception the deception the deception is that they're, they're conveying a message, I like you. What they're really saying is, I like to get in your pocket. I want to get in your wallet. I want to get in your purse. I want to get in your bank account. That's what I like.
Starting point is 00:25:40 I'm going to pretend to like you until I get what I want. And then I'm going to drop you. I'm going to move on to the next person. That is gain that was, achieved acquired dishonestly it's not just the guy in the alley with the gun it's not the embezzler you know in the CPA office that's stealing money from clients and nobody knows about that no this goes to this goes to people who are who use their personality
Starting point is 00:26:26 their charm they use all of their gifts that could be used for good and they use it to deceive people to get something from them that ever been done to you been done to me
Starting point is 00:26:45 taking me a while to get wise to it you go oh you really didn't like me did you that was all that was all a front that was just to get something out of me right you ever had that anybody having flashbacks right now seeing people's faces at various times in your life well wealth that is gained through unrighteous means is the same as stand in your hand. That wealth will slip away. You cannot hold on to it. Matthew Henry said,
Starting point is 00:27:35 though they make a man great in the world, they cannot secure him from the wrath of God. Wow. Bible commentator John Gill said, riches obtained by fraud and violence bring no solid comfort they answer not the end expected nor can they buy off death or judgment commentator adam clark said he noted the futility of ill-gotten gains he says ill-gotten wealth is a curse it increases care it brings guilt it provokes divine vengeance wow boy i wait to hear the one from charles bridges he was an anglican theologian doc in the i guess the late 1700s early 1800s he said these treasures profit nothing they are a shadow not substance they only fatten the heart for the day of slaughter wow that's a pretty powerful language there it is because it's serious it's deadly serious
Starting point is 00:29:12 Oh, I knew a man who had all the outward trappings of being a successful Christian businessman and everything. The man, he was shady. Oh, he was shady in his operations, just on the line, you know. skirt the line of being legitimate or illegitimate just ride that line okay and he would always when i'd question question him about his tactics he'd go well that's business yet on sunday he'd be in church oh my he was uh a lot of pastors chased after him and his money but they didn't care about how he got his money no but i i would question him on some of his dealings and i'm telling he'd say rick that's that's business in other words it's morality for
Starting point is 00:30:34 business and morality for church right a lot of people live that way rick i know I know he didn't see anything wrong with it. So this money brings money getting, you know, that's obtained illegally, not, not, doesn't see no. It doesn't mean it's obtained illegally in the world. It's illegal in heaven. it could be legal in the world right but heaven says that's illegal but that money brings power prestige influence credibility access and people will do whatever they have to do to get that money to get those things but the bible says it profits nothing
Starting point is 00:31:39 there's absolute futility in obtaining wealth through dishonest methods they can't buy peace of conscience they can't this money doesn't secure favor with god and this money cannot purchase salvation it profits nothing if if your conscience is troubled you don't have favor with god and you don't have salvation eternal life what good is it if you have billions of dollars what what does it matter what did jesus say Mark 8, verse 36, what shall profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? See, wealth obtained through in moral means is actually poverty. Because the person's soul is bankrupt in the eyes of God.
Starting point is 00:32:57 They're wealthy in the eyes of people on earth, but in heaven, God's looking at it and saying, you're bankrupt. But righteousness delivereth from death. So here's to contrast. Treasures of wickedness lead to nothing. There's no gain. you get to the end of life and you you got a big zero but righteousness will righteousness alone delivers you from death the righteousness implies upright living and listen this is both is it's not just one or the
Starting point is 00:33:55 other upright living and justice in your dealings with others i'm telling you doc there too many people we're skipping the second part they'll put the emphasis on the upright living what they do injustice to others yes you have to put both together upright living and doing justice in all of your affairs with other people i i encounter greed in people oh i hate greed dog i spot it easily i just i spot it easily in people greed greed will make people do things that shouldn't be doing you can have a person with upright living would never commit certain sins i would You would never see me commit that sin, and yet they'll be greedy.
Starting point is 00:35:21 It's like, where do you get the license for that sin? Or they're stingy, they're selfish, or they mistreat people. They don't treat people fairly. They do business. A lot of people who do business. it is a win-lose sport they have to win and you have to lose yeah it's not enough for them to win you must lose yes there are people that i i can't stand to be in a business meeting with that kind
Starting point is 00:36:04 of person i don't want to do business with them because it's a sport and and they've got to dominate and they've got to crush and they've got to squeeze and they've got to manipulate and get you to the point where you're like you just want to throw up you don't want to do business for these people they want to come out of the meeting like i won and i crush them right you think that's pleasing to god i don't care if you're a deacon i don't care you're not fair you're not just Matthew Henry said righteousness will stand us instead when riches fail us it delivers from the second death which riches will but hasten righteousness but the righteousness of Christ imputed and applied is that which delivers from
Starting point is 00:37:20 eternal death. Charles Bridges, the righteousness that delivers from death is not our own merit, but Christ, the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believes. righteousness often protects us from premature death now you people can die prematurely drunkenness you know foolish foolishly walking into a crime-ridden community when your mind says you really shouldn't be here that's almost tempting god yeah righteousness is a shield from eternal separation from god it's a shield that protects you from the eternal separation from the lord righteousness ushers you into eternal life
Starting point is 00:38:43 your soul. Psalm 34, verse 21. Evil shall slay the wicked, and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate. It's, when I, I'm bringing up Psalm 34, verse 21, because it's connected to this phrase, deliverth you from death there's a rescue righteousness pulls the soul away from the pit in which wickedness is dragging others into it we've been talking in previous chapters about that pit those stair steps they go down to soul Righteousness will grab you and pull you away from it.
Starting point is 00:39:48 Even when we're in our weak conditions and we start gravitating towards those stair steps, righteousness will grab you and pull you back and get you away from the danger. But you've got to have righteousness in you. Right. think about this doc look at this contrast worldly wealth cannot cross over the grave but righteousness walks boldly into eternity amen people say well i can't take it with them yeah that's right you can't take it with you but you can take righteousness with you say well you can't take righteousness with you what does that what does that mean no you can't
Starting point is 00:40:49 take wealth with you can't take things with you but you can take righteousness with you in fact it's the only way to get there also i believe doc that bless us nations where justice is honored we see it in the rise and fall of nations throughout history what was causing them to rise maybe the society was moving in the right direction and the Lord gave them time and gave them blessings and encouraged them. But then the inevitable happens, they start to go in the path of wickedness. Verse three, I think I can do one more here before we close. The Lord will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish, but he casteth away
Starting point is 00:42:04 the substance of the wicked. This one ought to bless you. This verse should bless you today. I encourage you to think about this, meditate on this all day. The Lord will not suffer the soul, the righteous to famish. Do you know what this means?
Starting point is 00:42:28 God has promised you he will feed your soul. It's a promise. The Lord himself says, I will feed your soul. I will not let your soul starve to death. You gotta be encouraged by this verse. So this is divine providence for our souls. It's the Lord himself who sustains our souls.
Starting point is 00:43:02 This word here, soul. It denotes the whole life, the inner being, the appetite of our spiritual being. They're not just talking about physical hunger. It's talking about spiritual hunger. The promise here from heaven is not that the righteous will never experience physical want, physical lack. not what's being promised. The promise is that God will never abandon their soul to ruination, to despair, to starvation. We've all been through periods of spiritual dryness. increasing your appetite he's got a feast up ahead he's just got you on a fast it's not starving you
Starting point is 00:44:15 he he's led you into a spiritual fast your appetite is sharpened is increased and then he brings forth the feast. I'm going to quote my four of my favorite commentators again. Matthew Henry, though the righteous may want bread, they shall not want comfort. Their soul shall be satisfied in famine. John Gill, not a natural famine for good men are are exposed to poverty, but a spiritual famine, a famine of the word and grace.
Starting point is 00:45:04 God will not withhold this from the righteous. Adam Clark, he who feeds the ravens will not suffer the soul that trust in him to perish with hunger. God may try, but he will never forsake. Charles Bridges, it is not, said their bodies but their souls shall not famish their outward man may hunger but their inward man is daily fed by his spirit what are we doing here why did why did the lord pressure me and he did he pressured me to stop true news after 26 years
Starting point is 00:45:57 why because he desired to feed your soul why does the lord put it in doc and me to prepare these lessons every day because he's he's fulfilling his promise in this verse to you he will feed your soul seek first the kingdom the father will provide everything that's needed seek ye first the kingdom of God all these things shall be added under you what this class is doing every day you're seeing you're starting your day by seeking the kingdom of God seeking the Lord amen and the Father says I make this promise to you because you're seeking me first, I will give you everything you need for today. David, King David, we all know this quote from David,
Starting point is 00:47:10 I've been young and now, am old yet, have I not seen the righteous forsaken nor his seed begging bread? the verb not suffer. It's emphatic. God himself actively restrains famine from overtaking the souls of the righteous. This is a firm, ironclad promise. Your soul will not starve. The father says, I'll see to it that I feed you. There's divine preservation. God himself is the guardian of his people's souls. And he nourishes us with grace, his word, a holy spirit, even when outward circumstances are lean. But he cast away the substance of the wicked.
Starting point is 00:48:26 The modern English says, but he thrust away the desire and the wicked. So while the righteous are nourished by God, the wicked are left hungry. They're unsatisfied. In fact, their hands are emptied by God.
Starting point is 00:48:48 It's the Lord who empties their hands. He feeds your soul and he empties the hands of the wicked. That's right. The word that King James translators used as substance, it is accurately translated by the modern English bibles as desire. In other words, what the wicked long for, what they lusted for, what they pursued, what they hungered for, God will throw it away. They'll thrust it away from them that they can't get it. The wicked crave power, wealth, prestige, you know, all the perks of being wealthy. indulgence and they love to indulge in luxury security that's one of the things they pursue
Starting point is 00:50:02 but god cast away their cravings and he leaves them hollow and empty probably the saddest thing in the world is a wealthy person who inside is hollow and empty Yes, isn't that just one of the saddest things to have access to everything and yet be empty inside? Let's read quotes from the four commentators, Matthew Henry. The wicked desire abundance, but it turns to nothing. They covet much, but it is all scattered. John Gill, the wicked are given up to their own desire. yet the Lord frustrates them, casting away both their persons and their substance. Adam Clark, what the righteous has, though little is blessed, what the wicked has, though much is blasted. Charles Bridges, the wicked hunger with a greedy appetite, yet the more they devour, the less they are filled. God blows upon their storehouse, and it withers.
Starting point is 00:51:19 So the idea here is that not only is there material loss, but there's spiritual emptiness, barreness. Their pursuits never satisfy them because God never blesses them. Right. You see this principle in Haggai in the old covenant. the Jews had returned from exile. I believe this is they were returned from Babylon. And the Lord told them to get his house in order, but instead they got their own homes in order. And he said, this is what the Lord said, this is what the Lord said to.
Starting point is 00:52:19 them you eat but you have not enough you clothe yourself but there is none warm and he that earns wages earns wages to put it in a bag with holes what was happening to the jews the lord was causing everything that they were doing for their own comfort to disappear to vanish to evaporate Why? Because they put themselves first. God was an afterthought. Oh, yeah, we're going to get to God. We're going to get to his house. We're going to do that later. We've got to take care of our own house first. And Lord said, no, I'm going to teach you a lesson. So he cast away. He cast away the desires of the wicked. He frustrates the plans of the wicket. He puts up roadblocks, pits, gollies. He puts up barriers, mountains, obstacles that frustrate the plans of the wicket. He empties their bank accounts and they go and they start over and start building it up again.
Starting point is 00:53:41 And they never stop to say, why is this happening to us? Well, Doc, we'll pick this up tomorrow at verse 4. Okay. I like today's... This was good today. I hope it was a blessing to everybody. I hope so too. And just based on our comments on our live chat today, I would say that's the case.
