Starting point is 00:00:00 Good morning, everyone. Welcome to Morning Manna. It's Monday. It's Monday morning Manna. And we are absolutely delighted that you have scheduled an appointment to be with us to join with us to study the Word of God. We're in the 10th chapter of the book of Proverbs. And today we're studying verses 6 through 10. Let's pray. Almighty God. Our Father in heaven. Your name is blessed. Your name is holy. Your name is hallowed. Father, we praise you.
Starting point is 00:00:37 Father, we ask for the presence of your Holy Spirit to direct this Bible study class and enlighten us about your word, about wisdom, your kingdom, all for the glory of your son, Jesus Christ. Amen. Amen. All right, well, we're glad to have you here with us today.
Starting point is 00:00:58 By the way, we have a new country checking today, Rick, Indonesia. Oh, great. So we've got that. Two people from Russia checking in. Of course, friends in Japan, South Korea, Philippines, and across the U.S. and Canada. Welcome here to Morning Manor, the live edition. We're a privilege to have you here.
Starting point is 00:01:16 We're continuing our study in the book of Proverbs, and we are in chapter 10 today. And we're going to pick back up at verse 6. I'm going to be reading verses 6 through 10. So if you'd like to read along with me, I encourage you always, if you can, I know it's not always convenient, but to read the word of God out loud when you can. And I always like to say, if you want to hear God speak to you, read the word of God out loud. And that way you can hear it in your ears yourself. Verse six, blessings are upon the head of the just, but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.
Starting point is 00:01:50 The memory of the just is blessed, but the name of the wicked shall rot. The wise and heart will receive commandments, but in prating fool shall fall. fall. He that walketh uprightly, walketh surely, but he that perverteth his way shall be known. Verse 10, he that winketh with the eye, causes sorrow, but a prating fool shall fall. God bless the reading of his word. And once again, you're seeing the same pattern. You'll see it throughout chapter 10, where you have contrast, opposites where are compared. A fool, a wise person does this. A fool does that. And so we're going to be working through some of those very practical applications in real life what wise people do and what foolish people do that's right
Starting point is 00:02:35 so make it your your determination not to do what fools do that's right verse six blessings are upon the head of the just but violence coverth the mouth of the wicket first part blessings are upon the head of the just so blessings come from both god and men and women mankind both bestow blessings upon you divine blessings from heaven temporal worldly blessings from men and women the the just live a life of integrity that attracts goodwill honor divine favor we can get into another study when it's not for today but living a just life also attracts opposition from from the wicked they they don't heap blessings on you they heap condemnation and persecution score opposition on your head
Starting point is 00:03:56 But this is talking about blessings and blessings from other good men and women. And these blessings are, as I said, they're temporal, worldly blessings, meaning the things of this life. They are spiritual blessings, spiritual riches, and they include God's eternal inheritance to his saints. it says the blessings are upon the head the head of the just so the head always symbolizes honor dignity recognition so the blessings are not hidden but they are visibly bestowed on the righteous again and you know i i personally i admit i have struggled with this i'm a blessed person i god blesses me but i get tired of the opposition from those who resent it yeah i just get tired of it it's constant it's constant the people who resent
Starting point is 00:05:16 God's blessings on your life. It just wears me out. Okay. And my fault is I tend to not talk about the blessings. I desire to glorify God, to thank him and to encourage other people, say, look, this is what the Lord has done in my life. He'll do the same thing for you. And at times I hold back and I don't do that because it's going to provoke wicked people to attack. And I'm like, I don't, just not in the mood for it today. But that's something I, that's a, that's a problem I've got to deal with. I just got to say, you know what? They own that problem.
Starting point is 00:06:02 And I am not going to withhold my praise of God because they don't have a relationship with the Lord. and it's typically the religious people who do it's not it's not the out you know openly unsaid people that's right it's usually the religious because they're jealous that the blessings of god are not on their life you know why because they're in a religion of doing and not being they're doing all the religious rules and they don't understand why they don't have God's favor and then somebody else over here doesn't seem to be doing all these rules like they are but favor is pouring out upon that man or woman it's because it's a relationship it's heart to heart. It's the Lord blesses those who bless him and have a relationship with him.
Starting point is 00:07:20 Um, the word just on the head of the just. The Hebrew word is, um, the Hebrew word is, um, sadique. And it means a person who lives in covenant alignment with the Lord. They are in the alignment of the covenant with God. And so they walk upright, they're fair, they're gracious, they're merciful, they're generous, they're kind, they're forgiving. people those qualities represent the just and that doesn't describe super religious people i think about uh doc psalm uh 133 2 the the anointing oil that runs down a person's head during consecration. All right. The hair, the beard, the body,
Starting point is 00:08:32 everything gets covered. So in the consecration, the oil is poured over the one who's being consecrated to the service of the Lord. And the oil, the anointing oil, covers them. In Proverse 10, this is talking
Starting point is 00:08:48 about the blessings of God pouring on you like oil and just consecrating you. You're covered in in blessings so righteousness attracts blessing just as sin attracts the curse so you know this this ought to be an encouragement all of us that when we walk in righteousness we can expect god's favor to rest on us and it's visible
Starting point is 00:09:28 I'm going to quote some of my favorite commentators. These are among, I've got about, I've narrowed it down to about 65 commentators. I can't read them everything every day, but I got a list of about 65 commentators. Most of them lived in the 1700s, 1800s, a few of them in the first 2030. maybe 40 years of the 20th century just 65 they're only 65 but but i have found 65 like you know what i my spirit bears witness with these people when i read their writings i feel uplifted i feel blessed i feel um you know educated informed like they're imparting wisdom to me and so i stay with those people. And they live again in the teaching that we put out. Yes. So Charles Bridges,
Starting point is 00:10:40 and all these guys are old guys. I mean, they died hundreds of years ago. Charles Bridges, the blessing is not only on his lips, but on his very head. He is adorned, as it were with God's favor. the mark of his seal is upon him i like what uh doc adam clark he said a just man has the benedictions of god and man he lives in blessing he dies in blessing he inherits eternal blessing that's perpetual blessing john gill said blessings of grace providence and eternal glory are upon him he is crowned with them as a diadem and matthew henry said the memory of the righteous is blessed while he lives blessings are upon his head prayers and praises go up for him so at the beginning of the lesson doc said we will see the pattern of this contrast between the good and the wicked
Starting point is 00:11:55 and so now the second part of verse 6 Proverbs 10 6 is but violence covers the mouth
Starting point is 00:12:10 of the wicked now blessings covered the head of the just but violence covers the mouth of the wicked why the mouth of the wicked why the mouth why not his head well in the bible the mouth the mouth represents not only speech but the expression of the person's life the wicked are defined by their words
Starting point is 00:12:49 And violence silences them. Yes. So, Doc, what I found these 65 preferred commentators I refer to, they were split into two different interpretations of this first. One group interprets this. interprets this verse as meaning the violence is from others the wicked are struck down by the violence they provoke but another group of these commentators said the violence comes from themselves their own cruelty their corruption rebound and silenced them so it boomerangs on them
Starting point is 00:13:48 I tend to go with the second one. I do, too. So we've got a, what we have here is a picture of reversal. The righteous are crowned and the wicked are gagged. I never saw it like this, Doc. The righteous are crowned, and the wicked are gagged. the wicket are gagged one bears blessing the other bears cursing the other bears cursing uh the covering over the wicket's mouth uh doc if i came into your office right now and got behind you put my hand
Starting point is 00:14:44 over your mouth and held your mouth tightly what would i be doing you be restraining me. You'd be causing me to keep my voice quiet. But even to the extreme, what would I be doing? Suffocate me. Yeah. Yeah, permanently silencing me. I would be suffocating you. So this covering on their mouth, let's go, but violence covers the mouth of the wicked. this covering implies suffocation the violence is not only external but it becomes the garment and the shroud of the wicked they're covered their mouth is covered listen this is really important and you may i don't think it applies to anybody here in this class but it may apply to somebody in your life what fills the mouth will ultimately cover and consume the mouth
Starting point is 00:16:13 A mouthful of hatred, lies, slander, bitterness, anger, condemnation, shame. Those things will eventually consume the mouth of that person. Over in the book of Romans, chapter 3, verse 19, Paul said that every mouth may be stopped. Yes. And all the world may become guilty before God. Doc, I never put those two verses together. Proverbs 10, 6 and Romans 319. Paul said that every mouth may be stopped.
Starting point is 00:17:04 Matthew Henry said, the mouth of the wicked is stopped at last with shame and confusion with the violence of divine wrath. John Gill said their mouths full of cursing and bitterness shall at last be stopped with destruction. Their end being everlasting punishment. Adam Clark said, violence is in their mouth, and violence shall be their destruction. And Charles Bridges said, what a covering. Not blessing, but judgment. Yes. Judge. Their mouth. I'll go on a fit. He said, their mouths once loud and boastful are closed with violence and shame you started to say something doc no no i was just going to say that's really you know you get right down to it that covering isn't you know something we're doing or anything it's god's covering the mouth of the wicked
Starting point is 00:18:00 or returning the curse on the mouth of the wicked the great example is in the book of esther in Haman. Haman, you know, he was cursing God's people. And those, the same judgment that he was wanting to put on God's people ended up on him because of the words of his mouth. Yes. So be careful what you speak. Because it produces a harvest. And you want to guard you. your lips guard your lips from not saying the wrong thing but also train your lips to say the right thing both produce harvest the mouth of the wicked produces a harvest the mouth of the just produces a harvest words produce fruit some fruit is sweet some fruit is bitter
Starting point is 00:19:06 That takes us to verse seven. The memory of the just is blessed, but the name of the wicked shall rot. That's an extreme contract. So memory here is, it means more than just recollection. You know, hey, I remember something. In this sense, memory is, the person's legacy, the testimony they left behind. Yeah, Doc, I was watching a Les Carter video over the weekend.
Starting point is 00:19:55 Love that man. I hope I'd like to meet him someday. I want to find out if he's as calm and easygoing as he seems. like just what what upsets dr lest carter is there anything you know but doc he was uh he was being very you know he looked in the camera and he said you know look i'm going to die you're going to die we're all going to die and let me tell you something each of us is going to have unfinished business in our lives when we die you are he said you're not going to die and have have accomplished everything you desire to
Starting point is 00:20:43 accomplish fixed every problem you wanted to fix repaired every every breach every he says you're going to have unfinished business when you die so just get over it yeah that's is there anyone who died and said i got it all done i don't have anything left to do to fix. I don't have anything left to do to accomplish. I don't have any relationships to improve. Has there ever been one human in the history of the world who went to the grave with those words? No? So you live your life the best you can with the help, the assistance of holy spirit and you do all that you can to live a good life in the eyes of the lord and there's nothing else that he expects from you so the righteous leave behind not only you know their money
Starting point is 00:21:51 they're a property they're you know because the bible says in proverbs you know good man leaves an inheritance to his children and his children's children so you know you leave behind things but the most important thing to leave behind is a fragrance hmm a fragrance of godliness I know I've told this story I'll tell it again it's a good one my my dear uncle Grover he was my great uncle my grandmother's brother and he was the most Godly influence in my childhood. He was a godly man. I've joked at Thanksgiving Day when he said to prayer,
Starting point is 00:22:40 the turkey bowed his head. I'm telling you, Uncle Grover walked with the Lord. And Doc, at his, this was at the viewing, the night before the funeral. He passed away in his 90s. He lived in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. He was a very successful businessman there and just had a wonderful reputation. So I was in my, I was in my early 30s when he passed away. And he really was my hero. I just looked up to him with so much admiration. And I was at the viewing. And Doc, what I still remember. is you know small groups of people three four or five people gathered together talking they're talking about Uncle Grover and many of them I didn't know because I didn't live in his city I lived in Maryland he lived in Pennsylvania and you know I knew my relatives I knew some people his neighbors and so forth but I made my way around in that funeral home
Starting point is 00:24:00 going from group to group introducing myself and i'm i am not exaggerating this doc every single group i went to people said let me tell you a story about your uncle grover doc i heard i i heard things that that man did i didn't know anything about good things I mean, people who said, well, there was a time years ago I was out of work and I was behind in my mortgage payments and your Uncle Grover paid my back mortgage payments. There were other people who said, you know, I had a great trouble in my life and your Uncle Grover was there with me. He was always a friend. He walked with me until I got over it. I heard story after story like that. There was a fragrance in the funeral home.
Starting point is 00:25:09 There was a fragrance of goodness. Like this man in this casket, he was a good man. And I hear nobody said anything bad about it. They all came to speak good things about it. that's what this means the memory of the just is blessed did did my uncle grover have his problem i'm sure he did did he have mistakes i'm sure he did i you know in my eyes i just didn't see it because he was such bigger than life figure for me the memory of the just is blessed yes So this blessing is God's seal of approval.
Starting point is 00:26:07 That's how this the memory of the justice blessed is because God has put his seal of approval on that person's life when they pass away. Amen. He ensures that the righteous are remembered as good. Psalm 112 verse 6. the righteous shall be an everlasting remembrance so your life becomes a living testimony your life bears fruit after death an everlasting testimony yes wow hey you say I'm not so sore I'm going to, if that's going to be the case with me, hey, if you're still breathing, you've got time.
Starting point is 00:27:02 You've got time to make a change in your life. You're still breathing. Make today the day you decide, hey, I'm going to live my life to be a blessing. Oh, I mean people who are not blessings. Dr. There's a woman that works here on the second floor with my office. She works across the hallway in another office. Oh, I don't know what's wrong with that woman. I dread getting in an elevator with her.
Starting point is 00:27:48 She looks so angry, so hostile, so it's like, wait, you know, it's early in the morning. What's wrong with you? As Zig Ziglar, you say, who kicked your cat? I know. I just, I can't imagine going through life like that. It's not like she's having one bad day. She has every day's a bad day. And I, I do my best.
Starting point is 00:28:16 Hey, good morning. How are you? And I just get stares, you know. Like, wow. What kind of, what kind of memory are you giving? off here what what how do people see you how are they responding to you what what memory will you in part when you leave blessing or bitterness blessing or bitterness wow let's check the commentators Matthew Henry the memory of the just is not only green but sweet
Starting point is 00:29:13 they are mentioned with honor their works follow them John Gill the memory of them is blessed with men and with God their name is held in everlasting remembrance and their righteousness endureth forever and their names written in the book of life too that's right adam clark the righteous are are remembered with blessings in the mouths of the good men their lives are celebrated their example cherished charles bridges the just though dead yet speak the savor of their graces spreads abroad their memory is blessed on earth and crowned in heaven okay so now we look at the contrast but the name of the wicked shall rot in this context name represents the person's reputation their legacy their influence
Starting point is 00:30:21 so the reputation the legacy the memory of the wicket shall rot rot means decay stink it leaves it doesn't leave a sweet fragrance like lilacs or orange blossom but it leaves a foul stench so there's this inevitable law of legacy righteousness endures wickedness rots away who who thinks about evil wicked mean people and has a nice memory about them right anybody hold uh you know celebrations for adolf hitler joseph stalin all good old joe what a guy killed tens of millions of christians what a man what a man now he's his memory rots hit He killed people. He was a lunatic. He was a madman. He took the world to war.
Starting point is 00:32:01 But there are little Hitler's and little Stalin's in the world. They don't start world wars. They just start family wars and neighbor wars and community wars and business. They just start wars. They're just, they start wars. They're just. just like Hitler and Stalin, they start wars because they're always, they're always agitating. Why are they agitating? Because they're not at peace with God. And so they agitate those who are at peace with God. Psalm 34 verse 16 The face of the Lord is against them to do evil to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth So the righteous, the memory of the righteous endures forever
Starting point is 00:33:04 But God himself cuts off the remembrance of the wicked He takes personal involvement in making sure their names, their legacy is forgotten. So the rotting is both temporal, meaning in the memory of men and women, but it's also eternal in the eyes of God. So for all of us, this should be a sobering call to live for a name that lasts. Yes. And that is done through total surrender to Jesus Christ. every time in my life i think i'm surrendered i find out i there's more surrendering to do like where do you reach total surrender
Starting point is 00:34:22 around the throne that's going to be it that's until then you're you're surrendering in the rest of your life i mean i desire to do it i just Why does it take so long to get there? Because there's so much of me that has to be dealt with. Yes. But the Lord is good. He just keeps working with us and leading us into another situation. It's like, okay, there's going to be some more of me knocked off.
Starting point is 00:35:01 That's a good thing. You know why? your father's paying attention to you you know even when the father is lovingly chastising you it means he's paying attention to you right enjoy it i don't know doc if i ever when my earthly father was spank me i don't know if i ever said hey dad's paying attention to me it was like That was the problem. No, we didn't want it at time. But in this case, it's a wonderful thing when the Father corrects you.
Starting point is 00:35:49 Because it means he's watching you. He loves you. He's paying it to you're not forgotten. Amen. You're not forgotten. So the righteous are remembered. blessing the wicked are remembered in bitterness and every life preaches long after death Matthew Henry the very name of the wicked shall stink it shall rot above
Starting point is 00:36:22 ground be buried in oblivion and be loaded with disgrace Adam Clark, they are soon forgotten, or if remembered, it is with contempt. Their name excites no praise, but only abhorrence. Charles Bridges, the wicked leave a blot, not a blessing. The remembrance is loathsome, their name eaten by the canker worm of shame. Verse eight, the wise in heart. will receive commandments but a prating full shall fall a wise and heart shall receive will receive commandments so wise and heart it it it there's that phrase represents people with inward wisdom
Starting point is 00:37:26 right not not the intellect but in the heart they have wisdom in their heart and it means that they are open to truth, to humility, to correction, to reproof, and they have reverence for God. They receive commandments. That means they welcome instructions, whether divine commandments from the throne room, from the word of God, or wise counsel from people who love them. to be parents church elders it could be teachers but they're they're open to receive instruction they welcome it receiving instruction is a is a mark of teachability wisdom wears humility like a crown the same can be said about discipleship true disciples have a receptive heart a receptive spirit they're eager to hear and obey the master's voice
Starting point is 00:38:52 So right now, in this live Bible study, there are 308 people here. And then throughout the day, there are going to be thousands more who are going to come to this class through the video on demand. But all of you are displaying your eagerness to receive instruction. Yes. you have a teachable spirit. The fact that you're here, the fact that you made a choice to join us, proves that you have a teachable spirit.
Starting point is 00:39:30 They can say whatever they want to about you today, but I can say this about you. You've got a teachable spirit. That's right. So, I can pick names out on our our chat conversation going on right now. Okay, I just choose any name.
Starting point is 00:39:56 Choose any name. You can say Dawn is wise and heart and she will receive commandments. You can choose any name here in this classroom. Put your name there and say, I am wise and heart and I will receive commandments. personalize this put your name in these in these proverbs where it says wise put your name there you're a saint you're receiving instruction right now you delight in obedience you don't complain you're not in grudging compliance you're you're you joyfully accept God's direction that's why Jesus said he that hath an ear to hear let him hear wisdom begins with listening hearts
Starting point is 00:41:12 in England. He said, the wise and heart are docile. They gladly embrace admonitions, esteeming them a benefit rather than a burden. Amen. Albert Barnes, he was an American Presbyterian. He said, the wisdom of the heart is shown by readiness to learn. The submissive spirit marks the truly wise who do not claim sufficiency in themselves but a prating fool shall fall prating uh the the hebrew word here is uh safall what is a prating how would you how would you describe preaching dog uh idle uh bull's full talk without any substance to it at all just vein just vain empty talk that's right in other words just blabbing yes the the wise will receive instruction but the fool will just blab out everything and know nothing
Starting point is 00:42:38 knows nothing and says nothing but says a lot to say nothing right they're babbling and it's all empty words so this literally means i'm prating it literally means the fools a fool of lips that's really what it means a full of lips a full of lips a full f o'll a fool of lips one who talks a lot and seldom listens again we can think of people that we know and all these characteristics fit don't they yes verse after verse they fit the same people they despise instruction they despise commandments they prefer to hear their own babbling chatter and the bible says their downfall is inevitable because they resist truth they mock counsel and therefore they will fall
Starting point is 00:44:01 the fall means that they're brought down but but again the contrast is very sharp the wise receive and are established the fool talks and collapses james james one verse 19 let every man be swift to hear slow to speak slow to wrath the full revert the full reverses the order the fool is fast to wrath quick to speak and slow to hear a prating fool represents a person who hears but does not do they deceive themselves you're all hat no cattle that's right it's a mouth that never closes but the mouth because the mouth becomes the mouth becomes the pit that the person falls into yes charles bridges the prating full full of words void of wisdom loves
Starting point is 00:45:29 Wisdom loves the sound of his own tongue. He will not stoop to receive, therefore he shall fall. One of my favorite, G. Campbell Morgan. The fool is known by talk rather than truth. His words are his own undoing for speech without obedience cannot stand. Another old one hundreds of years ago, Charles Simeon. The prating fool sets his wisdom above all instruction. He falls not by accident, but by the very weight of his pride.
Starting point is 00:46:12 The pride is what brings the fool down. Verse nine, he that walketh uprightly, walketh surely, but he that perverteth his ways shall be known. Walketh. This is talking about habitual conduct, not an occasional act, but a steady course through life, a long history walking. This is walketh, okay. We're not talking about occasional stumble, okay? We're talking about a long, a long, term way of walking so he at walketh uprightly walketh surely there's consistency again if the person stumbles he's able he or she's able to get back on their feet and resume their walk
Starting point is 00:47:24 their their normal walk is towards righteousness whereas the wicked person's walk the fool the fool's normal walk is towards foolishness the opposite is for the true the fool the fool may stumble and accidentally say something wise and then get back on his feet and be fools be a fool again. In other words, it's the exception to the rule. There's consistency. Their heart is not divided. The righteous walk securely. There's security. They don't fear God. Their heart is in alignment with the Lord. They sincerely, truly desire to please God,
Starting point is 00:48:30 to serve God. There's stability. They're trustworthy. But he that perverteth his ways shall be known. Again, pervert is not pervert. As we think of a sexual pervert,
Starting point is 00:48:51 this is to be twisted. to bend to corrupt the life is corrupted their life is twisted and it's it's a path it's a crooked path of self-destruction says the shall be known at some point god will deal with them and if they are if their hearts are wicked they will not recover God can deal with a righteous man or woman who temporarily falls into sin or in the wrong path God can deal with them they'll get back on their feet and get on the right path because it's in their heart
Starting point is 00:49:42 the issue is what's in the heart of the issue is what's in the heart of people um first 10 look at the time got two minutes here he that winketh with the eye causes sorrow but a prating fool shall fall in the early chapters of the book of proverbs we spend a lot of time talking about a body language right and now we're back to body language he that winks with his eyes shall cause sorrow a wink is a secret gesture it's a subtle signal it conveys there's a hidden scheme or plan now it We would say an innocent wink can be some people playing a practical joke. And the jokester looks over at everybody else, except the intended victim of the joke. And winks, what's he saying?
Starting point is 00:51:08 Hey, go along with this. Just watch. I'm going to play a joke on this person. Okay. But see, it's still conveying. and a message, I have a hidden plan. It's not malicious. It's not evil.
Starting point is 00:51:23 It's just a joke, okay? But the wink says there's a hidden scheme in motion right now. Go along with it. Now for the wicked, it's a message to other wicked people. I'm going in for the kill. You all know what I'm going to do because you're just as wicked as me.
Starting point is 00:51:52 So the wink is symbolic of crafty intentions, pretending friendship while plotting harm. Again, like, you know, if you get a group of crooked business, business people and you know an innocent person comes into their circle one of them is as looking at the other crooks saying hey this one's this one's naive this gonna be easy we're gonna take all of her money we're gonna take we're gonna take we're gonna take his savings see they do a wink It's saying, hey, I'm going to pretend to be friends with this person, but I plan to rob that person.
Starting point is 00:52:57 Sly communications are associated in the Bible with mischief. We studied it in Proverbs 613. But it can. cause these things can cause grief and pain sometimes uh you know narcissists can can use this technique to bring humiliation shame on another person and then cover it as oh it's just a joke oh i'm sorry i didn't mean to hurt your feelings you know and and the the intended victim is like hey you really embarrassed me in front of all those people and the narcissists say oh I'm sorry it's just a joke I didn't mean that the truth is he or she did mean it and it was covered as with
