TRUNEWS with Rick Wiles - Morning Manna Jan 9 2026 John 626 31 Faith Friday The Bread That Endures 05 2026

Episode Date: January 11, 2026

In this Faith Friday edition of Morning Manna, we begin by observing Communion, remembering the finished work of Christ before turning to His searching words in John 6:26–31. Jesus confronts the cro...wd with a piercing truth: they sought Him not for who He is, but for what He provided. Their hunger was physical, not spiritual. As the lesson centers on John 6:26, Rick Wiles and Doc Burkhart explore the difference between chasing temporary satisfaction and seeking the true Bread from heaven. This passage challenges believers to examine their motives, move beyond signs and provision, and pursue Christ Himself—the only One who satisfies hunger that bread can never fill. Starting point is 00:00:02 Well, welcome to Morning Manna. Today is Faith Friday, a day dedicated to celebrating our faith in Jesus Christ. Every Friday, saints from many nations gather together to participate in the Lord's Supper. It's a virtual Holy Communion service, and you are invited to participate with us today in this sacred meal. We have only two requirements. Firstly, you must be born again. And secondly, you have to have been baptized in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And all you need to participate today is bread and your choice of grape juice or red wine. So take the next few minutes and get ready to join thousands of Christians all over the world
Starting point is 00:00:56 in a worldwide virtual communion service. Keep in mind that tens of thousands of Christian saints are joining with you right now. Now, this is an amazing event, a virtual Holy Communion service. We are one body and one church, the body of Christ in communion with our risen Savior. Let's now enter into the presence of our Lord by praying the Lord's prayer together. And now, as our Savior Jesus Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray, our Father, which art in heaven. Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.
Starting point is 00:01:46 Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever. Amen. Well, Dr. Raymond Burkhart will now lead us in the prayer for purity as we approach the Lord's table. Amen. All righty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid. Lord, cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit that we may
Starting point is 00:02:34 perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name to Christ our Lord. Amen. Here when our Lord Jesus Christ says, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment, and the second is like it. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets. Let us confess the symbol of our faith in the words of the Apostle Creed today. I believe in God the Father Almighty, the earth and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
Starting point is 00:03:16 who is conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilots, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven. It sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From there, he will judge the living and the dead.
Starting point is 00:03:42 I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Christian Church, the communion of saint, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, life everlasting, amen. Amen. Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought. Word indeed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways. To the glory of your name, amen. Amen. Almighty God or Heavenly Father, His great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent.
Starting point is 00:04:45 And when true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon, deliver you from all your sins, confirm, and strengthen you in all goodness, bring you to everlasting life. life. Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Now hear the word of God to all who truly turned to him. This is a true saying and worthy of all men to be received that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners as 1 Timothy chapter 1 verse 15. Almighty God in your tender mercy you gave your only begotten Son Jesus Christ for death upon the cross for our redemption. He offered himself and made once for all time a perfect, sufficient sacrifice for the same of the whole world.
Starting point is 00:05:33 He instituted this remembrance of his passion and death, which he commanded us to continue until he comes again. Father, we ask you to bless and sanctify with your Word and Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine that we may partake of his most blessed body and blood. Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. once for all upon the cross. Therefore, let us keep the feast. Hallelujah.
Starting point is 00:06:03 On the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it. Give to his disciples, take eat. This is my body which is given for you. Do this, remember me.
Starting point is 00:06:25 The body of our Lord Jesus Christ was a given for you, preserve your body and soul, to everlasting life. This is the body. the bread of heaven, take and eat in remembrance that Christ died for you. After supper, Jesus took the cup. When he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, drink this all of you, for this is
Starting point is 00:06:45 my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you, for many, for the forgiveness of sin. Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me. Praise the Lord. The blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, which was shed for you, preserve your body and soul to everlasting life. Drink the cup of salvation to remembrance that Christ's blood was shed for you and be thankful. Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him who take away the sins of the world, and blessed are those who are invited to the Married Supper of the Lamb. This sacrament is the gift of God for the people of God. Feed on Him by faith with Thanksgiving that Christ died for you.
Starting point is 00:07:32 Heavenly Father, we thank you for feeding us with the Spirit. spiritual food of the most precious body and blood of Jesus Christ, your son and our Savior, and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the body of Christ and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out into the world to do the work you have given us to do, to love and to serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory. now and forever. Amen. Amen. Praise the Lord. Rick, today is Faith Friday. What faith lesson can we take away from the Lord's supper today? Well, Doc, I think we will be studying some verses in the book of John
Starting point is 00:08:24 for the next several weeks on Fridays. Today we will study some very powerful statements by Jesus in the sixth chapter of the gospel according to St. John that reveals sacred truth about the Lord's Supper in which we just participated in. Starting in verses 22 through 25. Again, this is John, the gospel according to John, chapter 6, and I'm starting in verses 22 through 25. And I'm not going to read them verbatim.
Starting point is 00:09:00 Just going to summarize. We read that on that day, which was following the feeding of the 5,000, the multitude remained on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee, where they had eaten the miraculous breath. They realized Jesus was missing, and they were confused because they had seen his disciples leave alone by boat the previous evening and knew that no other vessels had been available for Jesus, Jesus to use. However, when small boats from Tiberius arrived near the site of the miracle,
Starting point is 00:09:38 the crowd used them to cross the sea to Copernum on the western shore to search for him. And the crowd was surprised to see Jesus there. They were not aware that he had walked on water the night before to join his disciples. And the people asked Jesus, Rabbi, Why? When did you come here? Doc, I would like you to read John 6, verses 26 through 31. Amen. Praise the Lord. And I'm reading from the can-jews today. I encourage you to read along with me, John chapter 6, starting at verse 26 today. Jesus answered them and said, verily, verily, I say unto you, you seek me, not because you saw the miracles, because you did eat the loaves and were filled. They were not for the meat which perish it, but for the meat which endureth unto everlasting life,
Starting point is 00:10:38 which the son of man shall give unto you, for him hath God the father sealed. Then said that unto him, what shall we do that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him who he hath sent. They said, therefore, unto him, What signs showest thou then that we may see and believe thee? What dost thou work?
Starting point is 00:11:10 In verse 31, John chapter 6, Our fathers did eat manna in the desert. As it is written, he gave them bread from heaven. eat. And bless the reading of his word today. And we just ate that bread from heaven. Amen. We just ate it. You just participated in eating the bread from heaven. So today and next week, and maybe the week after, you know, it could be two, three, even four weeks. We're going to spend time in the sixth chapter of John to study the Holy Communion, because that's what it's about. It's about the Eucharist, which means the great Thanksgiving feast.
Starting point is 00:11:56 Different churches and denominations have different names for the Lord's Supper, so much the Lord's supper, others Holy Communion, others, it's the great feast. Others call it the Eucharist. It's the same event. And that's what we're going to be studying today and next Friday on Faith Friday. So let's start with verse 26. Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you,
Starting point is 00:12:21 ye seek me not because you saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves and were filled. A modern English version says, Jesus answered them and said, Amen, amen, I say unto you, you seek me not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were satisfied. The first part, Jesus says, verily, verily, I say it to you.
Starting point is 00:12:51 I think you already know, whenever the Bible repeats the same words, there's a double emphasis saying, pay attention. Something very important is about to come in the next sentences. So Jesus uses this double emphatic, truly, truly. It's one thing to be true, but it's double true. truly, truly, Jesus said. This is a solemn declaration that demands undivided attention. Jesus is saying, listen up, what I'm going to say to you is powerful.
Starting point is 00:13:32 Don't be diverted. Pay attention to what I'm saying. He introduces a profound truth. And Jesus is about to expose the people's, the real. motive of the people's hearts. The crowd had just witnessed. Remember, these are the people that had been on the other side of the sea and saw the miracle, the feeding of the 5,000 with the loaves and vicious. And yet Jesus refuses to be impressed by their pursuit. They pursued him across the sea. They're searching for him. He sets to tell us.
Starting point is 00:14:14 He's saying, look, I'm not seeking popularity. I don't care how many likes I get on Facebook. It's not important to me. I'm not gathering superficial followers. I'm searching for disciples who were hungry for me, not my miracles. And so Jesus sees through the enthusiasm of the crowd, but he's seeing their inward motives. He knows what they are truly seeking.
Starting point is 00:14:49 Yes. They want more food, Doc. They want another miracle. They want to eat some more. Now, the second part says, You seek me, not because you saw the miracles, but because you did eat of the loaves and were filled. Yes.
Starting point is 00:15:06 And so, that phrase you seek me, so you got this crowd pursuing Jesus. but their motive is exposed here at this point. They want more of what are things that are temporal, the eternal thing. And he says, not because he saw the mirror. The signs in the Greek, it's Samania, were meant to point to Jesus' identity as Messiah's God,
Starting point is 00:15:31 but they missed, completely missed the signpost and instead chased the bread. And he says there, because you did eat of the loaves, that were filled. So their true hunger was physical satisfaction, definitely not spiritual revelation. And so this is really the tragedy of misplaced seeking. There are many people there are seeking things, Rick. They want Jesus, the provider, but not necessarily Jesus, the Savior. You see, the miracles were never at the end. They were simply pointers to the greater miracle. Jesus himself as that
Starting point is 00:16:09 bread of life, as we'll see revealed later on in John 6th. So this verse is teaching that true faith. True faith hungers for Christ himself, not just the benefits that Christ brings. So the image is this crowd chasing a food truck. They love the free meal, Rick, but ignore the one who is the eternal feast himself. Oh, Doc, do we see this in today's church world? So much, Rick, it's really tragic. It is.
Starting point is 00:16:44 The benefits of the cross, the cross itself. Not the man on the cross, right? You can go even further. It's the man on the cross. So if you had two churches, this is just a hypothetical example. If you had two churches on the same street, and one church had a big sign in the front yard and said, this Sunday, the Word of God will be taught in the most amazing way.
Starting point is 00:17:14 The church next door to it has a sign and says, this Sunday, miracles, signs and wonders. Which one will get the bigger crowd? The signs and wonders. Yes. Yes. That's the truth. And that may make people uncomfortable, but that's the truth. many people are seeking the miracles,
Starting point is 00:17:39 the signs, the wonders, and not the one who makes the signs and the wonders and the miracle. But which one will have the bigger crowd, Rick? The one that has the free bread. The free bread. So now we'll go to verse 27, labor not for the meat which perish, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life,
Starting point is 00:18:01 which the son of man shall give unto you, for him have God the Father sealed. My friends, if you participated in the Lord's Supper with us moments ago, you ate this meat that doesn't perish, that endures unto everlasting life. Jesus is talking about the Holy Communion in these verses. The World English Bible says, don't work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the son of man will give to you, for God the Father has sealed him. We'll start with the first part.
Starting point is 00:18:44 Labor not for the meat which perishes. Labor not. Don't strive. Don't toil. Don't work. Don't expend your energy. It's a very strong. command to redirect your effort and your priorities, the meat which perishes, physical food,
Starting point is 00:19:08 temporal provisions, earthly satisfactions, anything that satisfies the flesh only for a moment and then spoils. Right. The crowd had just been fed miraculously with loaves and fishes, and yet Jesus refuses to let them settle for the temporary. They wanted, Doc, they wanted an encore. They wanted breakfast. What are you going to do this time, Jesus? We're hungry. Show us what you can do.
Starting point is 00:19:45 Right. But Jesus is showing them their shallow motives. They seek him for bread, not for himself. But he is the bread of life. Right. This phrase here is really teaching us that human labor is more often than not misdirected. We end up pouring our lives to fade, those things to rust, things that perish. So it was earthly the pursuits, whether they be wealth, pleasure, status, comfort, peace.
Starting point is 00:20:21 They're the things that Jesus is mentioning as the meat that perish is. Those things cannot satisfy the eternal soul. God created man for eternal fellowship with Him, not for this constant, endless chasing of perishable things, things that fade away, Rick. The second part of this verse says, But for meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the son of man shall give unto you.
Starting point is 00:20:54 He just gave it to us a few minutes. ago when we shared the meal, a sacred meal at the Lord's table, but for that meat which endures. He's shifting the priority. He's saying labor, work for the eternal. Work, desire the imperishable food that will sustain your life forever unto everlasting life. food that leads to and nourishes and secures eternal life with Almighty God. Yes.
Starting point is 00:21:33 Which the Son of Man shall give unto you. This food is not earned by human work. It cannot be acquired with human money. It is a gift of grace from Jesus Christ, the Son of Man. Yes. And now we've got to realize that the Son of Man and himself, is that divine provider. He alone give what satisfies the soul eternally. Later on in John chapter 6, Jesus calls himself the bread of life.
Starting point is 00:22:06 In verse 35, and later on, verse 51, he calls himself the live bread. Christ himself is that meat. He's the bread of life, which came down from heaven. So this phrase is teaching us that eternal life is not something that we can earn or something we can achieve. It's simply received as a gift through faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus, all Christians freely, to all who hunger for that eternal meat. The picture here is of a man laying down his basket of rotting bread. Imagine you're carrying around a basket of rotting bread, rotting food to receive a banquet from the king.
Starting point is 00:22:49 It's definitely a better gift. Amen. Verse 28. Then they said unto him, What shall we do? That we might work the works of God. There it is. There's human thinking.
Starting point is 00:23:04 Yes. What shall we do? We have to do something, right? What shall we do? That we, we humans, might work the works of God. It's the fallacy of human thinking. The crowd had just heard Jesus. speak. He exposed their shallow motives, seeking human physical bread instead of him. And he called them to
Starting point is 00:23:35 eternal, he called them to work and labor for eternal food. So now the question is, what shall we do? This is the question that mankind has been asking about Jesus Christ for thousands of years. What shall we do with this Jesus? They're asking Jesus, all right, we hear you, Jesus. What do you want us to do? Give us the to-do list. Don't we think like this, Doc? Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:24:06 Well, Lord, just give me a to-do list. I'll serve you. I'll do anything you want me to do. I need my prayers answered. I need to be blessed. show me the to-do list, I'll do it for you. We're always thinking this way. So the question,
Starting point is 00:24:24 they're asking it from a sincere heart, but it's a misguided heart. They think that eternal life is achieved by doing works, religious works. So the phrase is teaching us that it's a human instinct to ask the question, what must I do? It's a works-based mindset that is rooted in self-effort. But salvation is a gift of grace.
Starting point is 00:24:57 You can't do any work. We're unable to do the work to save ourselves. Well, Rick, the crowd here is earnest. They want to respond, but they misunderstand the grace that God is given. They think eternal life. It's something that earned, received. Even to many approach God with that same question, what must I do to be saved? And what that is really revealing, it's revealing a heart that still trust works,
Starting point is 00:25:27 doing something. This question is really an echo of the Redship ruler over Matthew chapter 13 and also the Philippian jailer later on in Acts chapter 16 where they asked basically the same question sincere yet needing redirection to faith this verse is exposing
Starting point is 00:25:50 that universal human tendency after hearing truth we have a default we default to performance rather than surrender isn't that usually the case so the image is a crowd standing before Jesus
Starting point is 00:26:07 eager but confused the whole baskets of bread asking how they could earn more bread. But they didn't earn the other bread. That's right. They had just witnessed miracle bread given to them. And then they're asking Jesus, what do you want us to do to earn more bread?
Starting point is 00:26:27 They didn't earn the bread in the first place. That's right. Hey, for those of you watching on Faith TV, as we run out of time for today's broadcast, just know that you can watch the remainder of this lesson at manna nation.com. manna nation.com look for the number of this lesson which is 05-2026 05-206 and you can complete this lesson so the second part of this verse is that we might work the works of God they they desire to perform divine tasks they desire to earn God's favor yes they're willing to work for favor that should hold a sign, we'll work for favor.
Starting point is 00:27:16 We'll work for grace. Is that an oxymoron? Yes. I want to sign, I will work for grace. You don't understand it. The crowd is assuming that eternal life is a reward for good works. They totally misunderstand grace.
Starting point is 00:27:36 Yes. Most religions today are workspace. All of them, including Judaism. They're all works-based. The question reveals legalism. Even after seeing miracles, they revert to self-effort. The phrase teaches us that the works of God are not many.
Starting point is 00:28:04 There is only one. Believe on the one whom God sent. That's what you are supposed to do. The Bible never told us to ask Jesus into our heart. I know that's going to upset a lot of religious people. What do you mean? Show me. Show me the verse that says, and Jesus said,
Starting point is 00:28:29 ask me into your heart. He always said, repent and believe in his name. Believe. Believe in his name. So these people, they have a desire and it's sincere. They desire to please God. but their method is wrong. They seek to do, not to receive.
Starting point is 00:28:52 Yes. And Rick, this is the heart of religion without relationship. It's a great deception, really, striving to earn what can only be given. So the image here that we have is of laborers asking for a job list. Just give me a to-do list I can check off. When the master assembly said, trust me, I've already finished the to-do. do-list. I've already finished the work. So any question beginning with, what shall we do? Shirley often reveals a heart that has not yet grasped the concept of grace yet.
Starting point is 00:29:29 Now, what we're about to see happen here as we continue our passage here is Jesus is about to redefine works. What's he going to do? He's going to explain that the work that God requires is simply this. Faith in His, that's the only work. If you even call that work, that's the only work that's involved. Because it's a work that requires you to rest. And it's not even your work.
Starting point is 00:29:56 It's a work of God, as we'll read in verse 29. John 6, verse 29, Jesus answered and said under them, this is the work of God that ye believe on him, whom he has sin. this is the work you got one work to do believe not ask him into your heart believe believe on him the crowd has just asked a classic religious question what shall we do that we might work the works of god they they desire to please god give us our to do list
Starting point is 00:30:46 Duck, I have literally caught myself at times, literally using the word to-do list in prayer to God, saying, Lord, you know, I desire to serve you, know I love serving and I love working for you. Give me a to-do list. I'll do it. I've said those words. I think we all have, Rick, at one time or another. But what does Jesus say about this? Well, he just smiles and goes, okay, you want a to-do list, okay? Well, I did it all. And when you figure out I already did it all, then you'll get what you're asking for, okay,
Starting point is 00:31:21 what you're believing for. It's already done. It was done before the world was made. Amen. So Jesus gives a revolutionary answer. He redefines the work of God from their concept of many human actions to one divine act. Faith in the one whom God has sent. to fall in mankind. That's the only thing God the Father expects us to do. Amen.
Starting point is 00:31:49 Have faith in his son. He said, this is the work of God. Not our work for God. Notice the words. This is the work of God. Yes, not our work. It's God's work in us. Praise God.
Starting point is 00:32:08 Faith is a gift and it's an operation of God. And so Jesus shifts the focus from doing to believing, from self-effort and work to divine gift, from works righteousness to grace righteousness. Rick, what Jesus doing here is he's spelling out a state that dismantles every single legalistic system, which is every religious system in the world when you get right down to it, that eternal life is not achieved by anything that we can do. It's not achieved by anything that we can do. is not achieved by human labor, any extent at all, but it's received one way and one way only
Starting point is 00:32:49 through trust in Christ. So this phrase teaches that faith is active. It's the soul's work. The only labor that pleases God, and that labor isn't even from us. It's a work of God. So God's requirement is not a list of deeds. It's not a to-do list, but it's a relationship of trusting in a son. So if we can picture this, picture a crowd of laborers asking for a job list and going to their boss and just give us a list of the things that you want us to do. What Jesus is saying here is that the work is finished. Just believe in the one I sent. Disciples are challenged here.
Starting point is 00:33:30 Stop trying to earn what Christ has already given. Believe in rest. Ultimately, this is the work of God. He sent his son. We don't only have the ability to believe ourselves. He enables us to believe, Rick. Yes. He gives us the grace to believe in.
Starting point is 00:33:54 It's amazing, Doc. He will not even allow us to have that one thing up on him. Yes, all right. It's not even our belief. The work of God is that ye believe on him who he has sent. And then he gives us the grace to be able. believe. Amen. Second part of this verse, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. One singular work that God requires, faith, trust, reliance on Jesus Christ as sinned Messiah and Savior. Any religion
Starting point is 00:34:35 that denies that Jesus Christ is not the son of God. God and human beings. flesh, any religion that denies that fact is Antichrist. Amen. Listen to what I said. Any religion that denies that Jesus Christ is God and human flesh is Antichrist. Any religion. Any religion. That she believe on him, a personal, relational faith, not believe in some abstract religious
Starting point is 00:35:11 doctrine, but in the person. of Jesus Christ. We're not believing at a church. We're not believing at a denomination. We're not believing at a doctrine. We're believing in a man, a God man. The Lord Jesus Christ,
Starting point is 00:35:29 whom he have sent. Jesus Christ is the Father's sent one. That's what Christ means. The anointed one. The sent one. Christ, that's not his last name. It's his title. Amen.
Starting point is 00:35:45 You know, his parents were Mr. and Mrs. Christ. Christ is his title, the anointed one. He is the word made flesh. He is the bread of life. And just moments ago, you and I, we participated in a sacred holy meal in which we ate the bread of life. And that's why we're going to be studying these verses. next week and maybe the week after, because it's necessary to understand the meaning of these verses to fully understand the Lord's Supper, Holy Communion.
Starting point is 00:36:28 So you understand what you're participating in, the sacred meal of eating the flesh of Jesus, drinking the blood of Jesus Christ. So you have any thoughts on this? Yes, well, Rick, this whole phrase here is teaching, that faith is the only work that saves. And that faith is not even of ourselves. It's not even our work. It's God's work that's working in us.
Starting point is 00:36:56 So this is redemptive. The father sent the son. The son accomplished the work. And we receive it by faith. The father sent the son, son accomplished the work. We receive it by faith. So this constant life of striving, of duly reveals a failure to believe.
Starting point is 00:37:15 It's a life of rest. Rest in Christ that reveals true faith. If you can imagine a weary traveler arriving at an end late at night, the work is done, the table is sit. He only needs to sit down, eat, and enjoy rest. Ultimately, that you believe on him whom he has sent is the gospel all in one sentence. That's it. That's the whole gospel right there, that you believe on him whom he hath sent. Faith in the sent son is the only work, the only work that brings eternal life, Rick.
Starting point is 00:37:57 That's right. Verse 30, they said, therefore, unto him, what sign showeth thou then, that we may believe, and believe thee, what dost thou work? Modern English says, they said, therefore to him, what then do you do you? do for a sign that we may see and believe you. What work do you do? They're now throwing this over on Jesus saying, well, show us what kind of works you do? Yes. Jesus is saying there's no works involved here. And they're saying, okay, so you're saying we don't have any works. Well, show us your works. What kind of works do you do? They can't get this out of their head that there has to be works.
Starting point is 00:38:47 This is religion. This is the bondage of religion. Amen. So look at the first part. They said, therefore, to him, what then do you do for a sign that we may believe? And that we may see and believe you. Okay.
Starting point is 00:39:08 So they just heard Jesus's declaration. The work of God is to believe in the one he sent. and they responded with skepticism, not only did they respond with skepticism, but with a demand. Yes. They were demanding that the Son of God do some kind of religious work. What sign do you show then? They wanted proof. More proof.
Starting point is 00:39:41 More proof. Right? Doc, is that what they are asking for? Another miracle? Yeah, more proof. Another miracle. Do something that really knocks our socks off of us, okay? Show us that you are the son of God.
Starting point is 00:39:59 They'd already seen him feed 5,000 people with a few loaves of bread and fish. And now they're asking for more signs. Yes. But what this is, it's evidence of hearted unbelieved. They have seen with their eyes. but they do not believe with the heart. They demand evidence while ignoring the evidence that was already given. That we may see and believe you.
Starting point is 00:40:32 They're making faith conditional on site. Yes. And this was the heart of unbelief, Doc. Always asking for one more proof, one more sign. Never satisfied with anything, Rick. So that phrase there, what then do you use? do for a sign that we may see you and believe you. It teaches that signs alone don't produce faith.
Starting point is 00:41:00 And I've experienced that in my own life. I've witnessed that. I've seen miracles happen. I've seen blind eyes open. I've seen the lame walk again. And I've seen people continue in their sin after a sign. So signs alone don't produce faith. They harden the heart when the heart is already resistant.
Starting point is 00:41:19 What's happening here is the crowd wants Jesus to prove himself. on their terms. They seek a sign worker. They're not seeking a savior. So a heart that demands signs after seeing miracles reveals that they're spiritually blind, Ray.
Starting point is 00:41:38 Disciples are given a warning here. Never make your faith conditional on signs or on more signs. Believe what God has already shown. You know, Jesus said, believe on him whom he has sent and they said that we may see and believe. Jesus said, you know, we need to see it. You just need to believe it. That's right. That's right. The next part says, what doest thou
Starting point is 00:42:08 work? What kind of work do you do, Jesus? What kind of work are you in? All right? So they're asking Jesus, what kind of work are you in? They want to see Jesus perform. Come on, Jesus. Jesus. do one more. We might believe you on the next one. If your next miracle is big enough, we might believe you. But we need to see works. We need to see something that you do.
Starting point is 00:42:40 I have to see this, all right? So they want to know what Jesus will do to prove he is worthy to be believed. Yes. That's what they're asking. do something that convinces us that you are worthy to be believed. So what they've done is that they're turning Jesus into a religious vending machine.
Starting point is 00:43:06 Yes. Show us as Hein. Do work. And then we'll believe. Produce something for us. Faith is not based on what Jesus does for us, but it's based on who he is. He is the sent one, the son of God. And our work is to believe on him.
Starting point is 00:43:32 Yes. So this is the exact opposite of verse 29, Rick. What did Jesus say in verse 29? Jesus said the work is to believe. They respond by asking for what? What works? So their question here is really self-centered. They want Jesus to serve their agenda, not to submit to his agenda.
Starting point is 00:43:53 So the life that keeps asking this question, what can you do for me? What will you do for me? What have you done for me lately? Reveals a hurt that has not yet truly bowed to Christ as Lord. Jesus here is about to reveal the true work. He, Rick, is the bread of heaven, the source of eternal life. As disciples, we're challenged in this. We're challenged to stop asking, what will you do?
Starting point is 00:44:23 and start believing. You have done it all, Lord. And ultimately, what dost thou work is all of humanity's question, isn't it? Jesus's answer is, all right? I'll give you an answer. It's the cross. It's the resurrection. I am the finished work.
Starting point is 00:44:46 I myself am the finished work. Amen. The crowd saw the miracles, but demand it more so. signs, Jesus offered himself as the ultimate sign and the ultimate work. Yes. True faith does not ask for proof. It bows to the one who is the proof. Praise God.
Starting point is 00:45:10 Who is the work? Who is the life? Well, that concludes our Faith Friday lesson for today. On next week's Faith Friday, we will resume this faith. lesson in the sixth chapter of the gospel according to St. John, and we will continue to explore the profound meaning of the Lord's Supper. Now, as we say goodbye, I want to pray for the peace of God to be upon you. May the peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God and of His Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, and the blessing of God,
Starting point is 00:45:53 Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen. Amen. Praise God.
