Good morning, everybody.
Welcome to Morning Manna, and we are delighted to have you with us.
And today we start the study of a new book.
Well, it's not a new book.
It's an old book.
But we start a new study of an old book, the Book of Proverbs.
And we're going to for the next month or two, study the book of Proverbs. And I don't know
how many weeks we'll be in it, but we're going to walk our way through it and extract all
of the gems, the golden nuggets, the silver that's in these Proverbs filled with riches and so we will begin with Proverbs chapter 1 and
we will read verses 1 through 9. By the way, I want to before we get into the
study, I want to tell you that on various social media platforms we have a morning
manna stream at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and i'm encouraging you to find it check it out find it because
in several weeks i don't know three four weeks we are going to disable the true news stream
that we have going it's been going for quite some time and everybody needs to switch over to the
morning man of stream so why don't you do it today instead of waiting to the last minute?
Find that stream because I'm checking and not a lot of people are there.
And I know what's going to happen.
You're going to wait till we pull the plug on the true news stream
and then we'll be flooded with emails saying what happened?
Where is it?
Okay, it's there's a second stream now and it is Morning Manna.
It's on your social media platform.
You can't find it.
Get in touch with us, let us know,
but it is there every week.
And I just posted it in our live chat right now.
So if you're with us live,
you can see the links that I posted there.
And then I'll also post it
in our Morning Manna community once again.
And so that's available right now.
So take advantage of it and bookmark all of those.
And even if you don't use them, go ahead and sign.
If you're, if you use those platforms, go ahead and subscribe to Morning Manna.
It helps us with exposure and to get the word out about the Bible study.
So Doug, I'm primarily concerned about,
because I know the people that are on Faith and Values,
they're gonna be okay because they're watching it
on Faith and Values.
I'm concerned about the people who are not subscribers
to Faith and Values, but they do watch Morning Manna,
and they watch it on the stream at 3 p.m.
If you are among the thousands of people that go there at 3 p.m. I'm encouraging you to find the
new Morning Manor stream and it's not only at 3 p.m. we're doing it at 10 a.m. also. Right.
only at 3 p.m. we're doing it at 10 a.m. also. Right. So within a few weeks, maybe by the end of June, the true news stream will go away. Okay, let's begin with Proverbs chapter 1 and we'll
look at verses 1 through 9. Almighty God, our Father in heaven, we love you dearly, Father,
We love you dearly, Father, and we praise you and worship you. Father, we need wisdom.
We need wisdom and understanding.
And so, Father, today we begin our study of the book of Proverbs, the Proverbs that your
Holy Spirit gave to Solomon.
And so now, Father, your Word declares Him to be the wisest man who ever lived.
And so we will study the wisdom that You gave Him.
And we ask that the Holy Spirit would illuminate it to us so that we understand it and apply
it and use it in Jesus' name.
Amen.
Amen.
And I'm very excited to be studying Proverbs here. We did a Bible study on
Proverbs internally here several years ago. And I still have all my notes from all that. And so,
but it's going to be interesting. I know I'll learn new things this time too. So we're going
to be looking at the very first chapter here as we start our new study in the book of Proverbs, the first nine verses.
So if you have your Bibles, read along with me, please.
I'm reading from the King James.
Verse one, the Proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, King of Israel, to know wisdom and
instruction to perceive the words of understanding, to receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, and equity,
to give subtlety to the simple, to the young man, knowledge and discretion.
A wise man will hear and will increase learning, and a man of understanding shall attain unto
wise counsels, to understand a proverb and the interpretation, the words of the wise
and their dark sayings. The fear of
the Lord is the beginning of knowledge but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
My son, hear the instruction of thy father and forsake not the law of thy
mother for they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head and chains about thy neck." God bless the reading of his word today.
Amen. Okay, so we'll begin with verses 1 and 2, Proverbs chapter 1 verses 1 and 2.
The Proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel, to know wisdom and instruction
no wisdom and instruction to perceive the words of understanding. So this opens up, the book has opened up with the declaration of its authorship and its
purpose.
So we're told immediately who wrote this book and why. It is introducing Solomon's God-given wisdom and it's setting the stage for a pursuit of
knowledge and understanding and godly living and establishing the foundation for the entire
book of wisdom. The phrase, the Proverbs of Solomon
clearly identifies King Solomon as the author.
That he had a divine gift of wisdom.
We could do a long teaching on what happened to this man
later in his life. How could somebody who is given so much wisdom end up doing so many dumb things?
But that's another teaching.
Right now we're going to focus on the wisdom that he received from the Lord. You can learn about it in 1 Kings 4,
verses 29 through 32. And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much,
and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the seashore. And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom
of all the children of the East country
and all the wisdom of Egypt,
for he was wiser than all men.
Then, Ethan the Ezraite,
the Ezraite, and Haman,
and Chakal
And dada and the sons the sons of mahal
And his fame was in all the nations round about
And he spake three thousand proverbs
And his songs were a thousand and five
Yes
1005
Yes
1005 songs
Wonder if he got the royalties on those songs doc
That'd be what they'd be asking today wouldn't it we we've dealt with that
Do do we know any of the songs he wrote? Well, some of the Psalms. Some of the Psalms, yes, some of the Psalms, but what about the
others? There's a thousand and five. Wouldn't be great to find a repository of those.
And I didn't do the study from Proverbs 1 to the end of the book of Proverbs.
How many individual Proverbs are in the book of Proverbs?
Oh, didn't even think about that.
But it's not 3,000. Where are the rest of them?
Well, we don't know where the Psalms are or the other Proverbs are, but the ones that God wanted us to know he put in his
are in the book of proverbs right yes says he spoke 3 000 proverbs that doesn't mean he wrote
him down right maybe he didn't write him down son of David king of Israel this connects Solomon
This connects Solomon to the covenant of God. This accentuates his royal authority, his messianic lineage.
He is the son of David, the king of Israel.
And so this is all established in the beginning, in the opening.
In verse two, he tells us why he wrote this book to know wisdom and instruction.
That the book's aim is to impart to readers, practical knowledge and moral discipline.
Yes.
And so what is wisdom?
Some scholars have defined it as skillful living
and instruction.
I should say that wisdom is skillful living
and instruction is corrective guidance.
The book inspires us to seek God's truth for the way we live our lives.
To perceive the words of understanding. Perceive in this instance, in the world,
in the English, modern English, it says to discern,
to perceive, to discern, to know
the words of understanding.
So you can hear words of understanding,
that doesn't mean you perceive them.
Correct, yes.
You in one ear and out the other.
This has got to be something that your soul,
your heart, your mind is able to grasp and process
and apply and implement in your life,
the words of understanding.
See Solomon when he asked God, he asked God for God gave him wisdom and understanding.
What good is wisdom if you don't have the understanding of it?
The two go together, right?
So to perceive the words of understanding means the ability to grasp profound truth
and to apply it in your life.
So the entire book is designed to encourage
the people of God to pursue wisdom with humility
and a teachable heart.
This is really important, a teachable heart. This is really important, a teachable heart.
I've encountered people throughout my life,
I know Doc has too,
they simply don't have a teachable heart.
Right.
You can't teach them anything,
can't explain anything to them.
They don't have a teachable heart.
The moment you start to talk to them,
they start talking over you, arguing with you.
Their voices get louder.
You know anybody like that?
You try to talk to them and they elevate their voice.
They start talking over you to drown out your voice.
They do not have a teachable heart.
And so they don't wanna hear anything that is contrary
to what they have decided in their mind is right.
And people without a teachable heart are not humble.
And yet they will tell people they're humble.
They will proudly tell people how humble they are. You need to be as humble as they are. And what's wrong with you? You're not humble.
But they don't have a teachable heart. You can't show them anything.
I've sat with people and shown them line by line what the Word of God says about an issue
that they're dealing with and they'll just fight and argue and deny it and bring confusion
and strife and argument into the discussion.
And it's like, what's the point?
You can't reason with them.
See, that's an unteachable spirit. I don't know what you do with somebody like
that. I don't know. I don't know that. I don't have the patience for it. There are certain
things, Doc, there are certain things in life. I don't have the patience to deal with it.
I just, I don't know what to do.
Well, how did Solomon describe those that were unwilling to learn? What do you call them?
It's a four letter word.
Fools.
Yeah.
Only a fool would reject wisdom.
Only a fool would reject wisdom.
And that's really, you know, there's two things about Proverbs that, uh, really
that go hand in hand, we're going to learn wisdom and we're going to
learn how not to
be a fool. Amen. By rejecting them. Those are the two primary themes of Proverbs. That's right.
There are these are extremes. You should be wise and you should not be a fool.
Those are the choices. There's nothing in the middle. Seek wisdom or be a fool.
You don't seek foolishness.
You just are full.
That's right.
So you have to seek wisdom.
You have to leave foolishness and pursue wisdom.
It's easy to be a fool. Fool is like the default mode. Yes. You have to pursue wisdom.
That's right. Wisdom requires action. You either pursue it, you purchase it, you acquire it,
it just doesn't fall on your head.
But a fool with a teachable spirit can be delivered from foolishness.
Amen.
Praise God for that.
I can relate to that.
Yes, yes.
I've been on a lifelong journey to escape foolishness.
Lifelong journey to break free of foolishness.
But I'm pursuing it.
At least I'm pursuing it.
But if I had an unteachable spirit, I would embrace my foolishness and be proud of it.
Amen. So, wisdom's purpose unites the brethren in a shared quest for God's wisdom and understanding,
which will then transform our lives.
And without the Holy Spirit in this process, you're not going to receive wisdom. It's the Holy Spirit who imparts the wisdom.
So you've got to embrace the Holy Spirit.
You have to seek the Holy Spirit, desire the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is the one who gives the wisdom.
I think the Holy Spirit is wisdom.
I think wisdom is the Holy Spirit going through the streets saying,
hey, anybody looking for wisdom?
Come. Come crying out.
Come.
I've got it. I got plenty of it.
When we pursue wisdom-
It's almost as if-
I'm sorry.
No, go ahead.
I'm just saying, it's almost as if the Holy Spirit is crying out,
I've got wisdom to give away and there's no takers.
Who wants some? I know.
I'm of a view, it's my personal view.
is in my personal view. And it may not be scripturally provable, but I'm of the view that the Holy Spirit opens up God's treasure box in the morning. Wherever morning is for you,
and morning is different in every part of the world.
But I believe the treasure box is open in your morning.
And it's wide open.
Imagine a treasure box filled with jewels
and gold coins and just diamonds. It's just a big chest and the lid is wide open
in the morning. And there's an angel there saying, get some. We're going to close the lid at a certain hour. You'll have to come back tomorrow morning.
I get that because in Proverbs you will see that that wisdom is in the streets in the morning
crying out. That's where I get it. I you know that it's not I'm not saying that if you ask for wisdom
at three o'clock in the afternoon God's not going to give it to you. not I'm not saying that if you ask for wisdom at three o'clock in the afternoon
God's not going to give it to you but I'm just saying that the treasure chest is wide open in the morning
it's come and get it and the people who receive the nuggets are the ones who are up early seeking him
nuggets are the ones who are up early seeking Him. It's one thing to be up early, but you got to be seeking the Lord. Yes. You got to be seeking Him, seeking His wisdom, seeking
His understanding. I just, one thing I could change, I mean, there's a lot of things I could change if
I could relive my life, a lot of things.
But one of those things I would change would be I would have gotten up very early, decades
and decades ago to pursue wisdom and understanding.
For a long time, I was a latenighter. I'd stay up late at
night, then I'd have trouble waking up early. And I realized that's not right.
You know, you try to explain, you try to justify, well, that's just the way I'm designed. No, you're not.
No, you're not.
You're supposed to sleep and get up early.
That's the way you're designed.
And I wish I wish I could go back into my 20s and 30s.
That's what I wish I could change.
I would have I would have bypassed a lot of trouble and a lot of stupid decisions.
And who knows what prosperity would have come to me.
But that's behind us.
What I can do is today.
I can't do anything about yesterday,
but I can do something about today and tomorrow.
Right, you can start making wise decisions in this moment.
That's right. Because when tomorrow arrives, it would be today. Right. You can start making wise decisions in this moment. You can't do anything about the decisions you ask.
Tomorrow or alive, it will be today.
It's always today. So make the decision today.
Verse 3.
To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity.
This is what we're studying.
To know wisdom and instruction, to perceive the words of understanding, to receive the
instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity. God believes in equity.
Yes.
Isn't it amazing how the devil has hijacked the biblical words and themes? You take justice
and the devil turns it into social justice. You take equity and the devil turns it into social justice. You take equity and the devil
turns it into Marxism. Right. Well, let's see what the Lord's...
When it talks about equity here, it's not talking about man's equity. Our sense of
equity is a lot different than God's sense of equity.
Yes. sense of equity. That's what wisdom teaches. Wisdom teaches godly justice, godly judgment,
godly equity. That's what wisdom truly teaches. Yes. So verse 3 declares that Solomon's Proverbs
aim to impart instruction in wisdom, righteousness, justice, and equity.
So that's to guide us toward ethical and godly living as part of the call to pursue wisdom.
Right.
Look, everything God is doing is to change us from being the filthy, rotten, dirty sinners that we are.
Yes.
Everything, that's what it comes down to.
He knows what we are.
He's not shocked.
He's not dismayed.
He's not frustrated with you.
He knows what you are.
He knows what I am.
He knows what Doc Burkhardt is. He's okay.
He's okay with...
He's a loving father who says,
I've made ways for you to be better,
to be more like me.
Follow my path.
Here, I'm going to give you instructions
and wisdom and understanding.
You won't be an idiot anymore.
You won't be a fool. You won't be a fool. me, follow my path here. I'm going to give you instructions and wisdom and understanding.
You won't be an idiot anymore. You won't be a fool. Okay. Don't be stupid. Yeah. He doesn't
desire his sons and daughters to be idiots. And you know, even on another level, Rick,
Proverbs, even though it's a book of wisdom, it's also a book of faith.
Rick, Proverbs, even though it's a book of wisdom, it's also a book of faith.
Yes. Of course, we emphasize faith in our ministry here so much. Where do you see faith at, Doc? I see faith because He's giving instruction.
By faith, you obey that instruction. When you obey the instruction, God honors that faith.
Amen.
God honors that faith
Amen
Obediences by faith yes
true obedience is by faith if if it's if your obedience is by
a sense of religious law
I don't have any choice except to be obedient. I'm gonna do it anyhow
Okay, that's not faith. No. And that's not real obedience. Real obedience is when you say to God, I'm going to obey you because I believe
you and I trust you and I love you. Yes. And I have problems in my life and I have things I have to overcome and I've got all kinds of issues
and I am trusting you to help me
and I'm going to pursue your wisdom.
He's a loving father.
Oh, I'm so glad he's not like people.
I'm glad he's not like me.
Oh my.
I desire to be like him.
Yes.
To be like him.
Instruction of wisdom is modern English is wise dealing, to deal wisely in the world.
Oh, I need that.
There are so many deceptive people and they're good at it. They're very good at it.
They're very good at it.
Do you know what a con man is?
You know, you know the phrase, that guy's a con man.
Well, why do we call a person a con man?
Well, he's a crook.
Well, why do you use the term con man?
C-O-N.
Why do we say con man?
What does that mean?
Confidence man. Confidence man.
The way that they get into your pocket
is to gain your confidence.
They don't come to you revealing their evil plans.
They come smiling and joking and hugging and laughing and taking you to lunch and they
gain your confidence.
The really good ones will stay at it for months, maybe a year.
And then when they have you at the place that you let down your guard,
that's when they get your purse, your wallet, your bank account.
That's what a con man does.
You need wisdom to discern these people.
You need wisdom for wise dealing with people in life.
need wisdom for wise dealing with people in life. For me, it's a positive and negative in my life.
I treat everybody like, you're going to have to prove to me you're a crook and a liar.
I'm just going to accept you up front front that you're who you say you are,
you're a good person. I'm just going to accept you. You have to prove to me you're a thief,
a liar, and a snake. That's a good thing in the sense that I'm not judging people. But on the bad way is, I got snake bites all over me.
And I tend to fall on the other end of the spectrum.
You know that doc, I have snake bites. You're right. You are.
And that's those are great qualities. And so what do I
always say after I get bitten by a snake, why didn't I see that coming?
So you have to deal wisely.
I remember one time many, many years ago,
there were three businessmen, they were in business together, and they came to us, our
ministry office in Texas.
And oh man, they had amazing offers and deals, and it was just going to be wonderful working
with them.
And when they left, my son Jeremy, and he was very young at that time, he looked at
me and said, Dad, do you want to get away from those three men?
I go, why?
He goes, they're snakes.
I said, they're Christian businessmen.
He goes, I don't care what they call themselves.
They're snakes.
Well, guess what?
All three of them bit me.
Yeah, it took a couple years, but they eventually got their f them bit me. Yeah, it took a couple years.
But they eventually got their fangs in me.
And I had to say to my son, you're right.
I didn't want to believe it.
I just didn't want to believe it.
OK.
I'm trying to be transparent with you.
I need this book so much.
I need the wisdom that's in this book.
And Satan will send people to you.
When God desires to bless you,
he will send a person into your life.
When Satan desires to destroy you,
he will send a person into your life. When Satan desires to destroy you, he will send a person into your life.
What's the common denominator? People.
God blesses you through people. Satan hurts you through people.
The purpose of this book of Proverbs is to gain wisdom and understanding so that we can discern who is who.
You got it.
I remember one time, Dr. Mike Murdock, I was with him. This was 30 some years ago.
And he put his hands on me and started to pray.
And he's praying, I'm like, why are you praying that?
Okay, you know, this is more than 30,
I would say somewhere around 19, early 90s, you know.
early 90s, you know, and he was praying, God, separate this man from every wrong relationship, take the people out of his life, remove these wrong relationships and bring in right relationships.
And I mean, he was praying, Lord, sever friendships,
sever relationships, sever, I mean, he was like cutting.
I'm like, whoa, what's going on here?
But he had wisdom.
You know, I asked him to pray for me for something
and he didn't pray about that.
He prayed about wrong relationships.
But the Lord had given him the understanding that what's at the heart of Rick's problem right now
are wrong relationships. Right. And that's where most of our problems are. Either our, you know,
unwise decisions or our unwise relationships.
And usually they go hand in hand, because we'll make unwise decisions in unwise relationships.
If you were abused as a child, you will seek out abusers in your life and form relationships with abusers.
That's right.
I don't know.
I don't know how that works.
How do we subconsciously do that?
I don't know.
You will seek out people to abuse you.
Right.
And the devil will apply it.
And you'll abuse others. And you'll abuse others too. Yes, that's right.
This is going to be an interesting lesson, isn't it? This whole this whole study of Proverbs. This is gonna be a very interesting study.
So justice and judgment and equity.
These are the three ethical dimensions of wisdom.
Justice is fairness.
Do you treat people fairly?
Do people treat people fairly? Do people treat you fairly? God expects justice. Why? He is just. Can you imagine God making an unjust ruling, an unfair ruling,
an impartial, I mean, a partial ruling, something where he rules against the facts, the truth,
and he rules in favor of the wrongdoer
and against the victim.
No, he is just, he is fair.
Even when you do wrong, God is aware that
that you may be under great duress
by others who treat you unfairly.
He is a just God.
He's fair.
Judgment is sound decision-making.
Justice, judgment, and equity.
When he says judgment,
he's not talking about the gavel coming down like a judge.
Hey, I sentenced you to 10 years in prison.
That's not what he's talking about.
He's talking about good judgment.
You're making sound decisions.
And equity is not as the modern day Marxists describe it
as everybody has equal ownership and everything.
That's not what this is talking about.
It's talking about impartiality.
ownership and everything. That's not what this is talking about. It's talking about impartiality.
God is fair. He makes sound decisions. He's impartial,
and he acts with integrity, and that's how he desires us to behave. Micah 6, chapter 6 verse 8, were called to do justly. There are various scriptures
in the Old Covenant, and then you see Jesus making reference to
the same theme, the lack of mercy.
Oh my God, God is grieved by the lack of mercy in people.
Now there they have a judgmental attitude.
I'm going to judge you.
I'm going to be the judge, the jury.
I'm going to be the prosecutor, the judge, the jury.
I'm going to judge you.
I'm going to treat you unfairly.
I'm not going to show you any mercy.
But when they're in trouble, oh my, they cry out to God,
have mercy on me.
when they're in trouble, oh my, they cry out to God, have mercy on me.
You better treat people with mercy now and grace
because you'll need it someday.
You will need it.
He chastised the Israelites and the Jews for their lack of mercy.
And Jesus did too.
Yes.
That He requires mercy.
He expects mercy.
So these virtues that we're talking about here, justice, judgment, equity, they reflect
God's character.
And the purpose, what he's doing here is to get us to have a mirror image of his righteousness
in our relationships and the decisions that we make.
Yes. Do you want human justice or godly justice? Do you want human judgment or godly judgment?
Do you want human equity or godly equity? I think we can all say we want the godly versions of all
these. At least that should be our desire, right? Yes. I have seen the Christians surround a sinner with a noose.
We're going to hang you.
You send, and we're going to hang you.
Spiritually, emotionally, mentally, we're going to hang you.
What they're really doing is saying, I deserve the same kind of treatment, but you don't
know about my sin.
Isn't that what the men were doing that surrounded the woman called an adultery?
Exactly.
What did Jesus write in the sand?
We don't know, do we?
But whatever it was, all the men took off and ran away.
This is my view.
I think what he wrote was their names and the sins they committed.
Right.
I think they looked into the sandwich.
I know what you did.
I'm getting out of here.
What, Doc?
I always imagine that he wrote, I know what you did,
without even naming names.
He said, I know what you did.
Yeah.
I think he wrote their actual names and the sins that
they committed and who they committed it with. And I think, I think they just freaked out and
said, I gotta go. I gotta leave. I know the're not even going to get to verse 9. I thought we'd get
maybe to verse 16 or 17. Proverbs 1.4. To give subtly to the simple, to the young man, knowledge
and discretion.
The World English Bible says to give prudence to the simple,
knowledge and discretion to the young man.
Right.
Those are English words that are kind of hard to fit
into the original language there.
The word that's used for subtlety there is
the Hebrew slash Aramaic word Orma, which means to be shrewd, but in a positive way.
Shrewd but in a positive way. To be freed? No, to be shrewd. Oh shrewd, shrewd. Yes, okay. But in a positive way.
Yes, the Hebrew word is or ma. Yes. It means shrewdness, practical insight,
practical insight, wise discernment.
See, modern days we think of shrewd as sneaky. It's not what it means.
Doesn't mean you to be sneaky, you to be shrewd.
Yes.
That means you have practical insight,
you have wise discernment,
you make your decisions with shrewdness for the best
benefit of everybody and always for the glory of God.
So he gives prudence to the simple, the simple meaning the naive, the inexperienced, not simple head, we're not talking about people
being mentally deficient.
He's just saying to those who are naive, who are inexperienced, they're simple.
He gives prudence to them. Simple also refers to people who are open but easily swayed.
Right. I think we all know people that can be, you can just watch them. They can, they can just move from one position to another based on who's
talking to them at the time, easily swayed.
Just go with whatever the dominant person in the room is saying as
a person that's easily swayed.
To the young man, knowledge and discretion.
So he's saying, I'm talking to the youth who need guidance.
Knowledge is the understanding,
knowledge is understanding truth.
And discretion is careful judgment.
It's thoughtful planning and careful judgment.
Do you have any more insight on that, Doc, to the young man's knowledge and discretion?
Well, the word discretion comes from the Hebrew Aramaic mesima, which means thoughtful planning,
like a well-thought-out plan. In other words, what Proverbs can do for the young man or the simple is to give them
an understanding of things of the world and how to plan for those things. So those two things go
hand in hand. It's one thing to have knowledge about the world, but it's quite another thing to
have a plan for how to respond to those things that happen in the world around us.
And I think in my life, personally, that's an area where the Lord has brought me a long way,
especially over the past decade, decade and a half, and that is think hard about the decisions that you're making, whether it be finances, whether
it be relationships, whether it be a career, think hard about it. Just don't go
with the flow of the world around you, but apply the wisdom from the Word of
God in a thoughtful, decisive, faith-filled way. That, to me, that's what that discretion means to me personally, is to
wisely consider the decisions I make and make those decisions based upon the Word of God
to the very best of my ability. Yes, good, good definition.
Good definition. Just a few days ago in Romans 16 verse 19, Paul said, to be wise unto that which is good.
So this is this.
To be wise unto that which is good.
Well, you have to have discernment to know that which is good.
And to have that kind of discernment, you have to be wise.
And I, you know, the verse before in verse 18, Romans 16, Paul was talking about avoiding
false teachers who are going to give you radical ideas.
See, people have a misunderstanding of false prophets, false teachers.
They think, oh, that guy's got flaws in his life,
he's got sins in his life, he's false.
He's like, no, a false teacher, a false prophet
is somebody who's giving you heretical ideas.
Yes.
Ideas that are contrary to the written word of God.
That's a false teacher, a false prophet.
They're giving, you're not gonna find a perfect person.
You're just not gonna find them.
They're not out there, you're not gonna find them.
If you're going around shopping for the perfect pastor,
the perfect evangelist, the perfect prophet,
you're not gonna find them.
But I'll tell you what, you will find false teachers and false prophets because they are
imparting ideas and beliefs that are contrary to the written Word of God. So what we're seeing here in these first four verses of Proverbs, this is a universal appeal.
God is saying to everybody, hey, even the simple-minded, even the inexperienced,
the young, y'all come on in and get some wisdom and understanding.
Be humble, pursue wisdom. I desire to give it to you. So that you will
be wise unto that which is good. All right, I'm going to try to do one more. Verse five.
A wise man will hear and will increase learning and a man of understanding shall attain unto
wise counsels.
So now verse five is extending the purpose of Solomon's Proverbs.
Yes.
He's now emphasizing that even the wise can grow wiser.
Yes.
This isn't just a book for fools.
Right.
He's saying, hey, even those of you who are already wise, you're not wise enough. A wise man will hear and will increase learning.
And a man of understanding may attain wise counsel.
So he's expanding the invitation saying, hey, don't look at this book as a book to help
idiots.
This is for you wise people also. Yeah, it's not wisdom for dummies.
It's wisdom for dummies and the wise.
Yes, for all men and women.
He's saying, even those of you who have already attained
some degree of wisdom and understanding, you can
grow and increase in learning and understanding. And you can, you can gain wise counsel. You
can have a lifelong pursuit of wisdom. And then you will impart to others knowledge, prudence, and justice,
and equity.
He said, a wise man will hear.
So man means male and female.
God made man, and he made them male and female.
Man is the title of the species. So a wise male or female will hear. And so the humble, their ears will be open.
And as we talked about earlier, true wisdom requires a teachable spirit.
An unteachable person will not hear. Yes. It's just that simple. They will not hear.
That's why they are described as having an unteachable spirit.
Because they refuse to listen.
And typically what I have found in my lifetime
is people with an unteachable spirit will talk over you.
And you feel like you're wrestling with a brown bear.
Doc, I won't name names, but years ago I had an employee,
I just felt every time I had an encounter with him,
I had wrestled with a brown bear.
I had an encounter with him. I had wrestled with a brown bear.
And not a friendly one either.
And it wasn't a nice bear.
It was just constant wrestling
and strong, a strong brown bear.
It's like I couldn't teach him anything.
I couldn't reach him.
I couldn't talk to him.
It's an unteachable spirit.
He would not hear.
Whatever I would say, he would counter it.
He would talk over me.
He would object.
Every meeting was like that.
I liked a guy. It's like I wanted, I desired that to keep him on the team.
But eventually he had to go because he had an unteachable spirit and it was destructive.
spirit, and it was destructive. So and usually people with an unteachable spirit are destructive.
They will destroy things around them.
They'll destroy organizations, they'll destroy relationships, they'll destroy businesses,
they'll destroy churches, because there's something inside of them that is full of anger
and bitterness and pain and they're just striking out and they destroy.
And they'll search for flaws.
They'll search for things to justify the destruction.
So he said they will increase learning.
A wise man will hear and will increase learning. In other words, a wise man or woman will become wiser.
That wisdom compounds itself like interest
through diligent study.
I'm patting you on the back here,
those of you in morning manna
who come here five days a week for one hour.
Your wisdom is growing, your wisdom is compounding even as you sleep.
You may not be aware of it, but you're growing wiser.
Why? Because you are pursuing the Word of God.
Yes.
And God will promise, His promise is I'll give you wisdom, I'll give you understanding,
I'll give you discernment, because you're seeking my word.
And then the last one says, a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsel.
shall attain unto wise counsel." What does that mean? A wise man or woman shall pursue
sound guidance. Right. Guidance from the Holy Spirit, guidance from other wise men and women.
Right. A wise person will seek out wisdom from others. For what purpose?
To attain to wise counsel.
That word wise counsel is an interesting word that's used there.
It's the word in the Hebrew ear make, takbalot.
And it refers to the steering ropes of a ship. Ships didn't always used
to have a big wheel that you guide the rudder with. They used to be able to use to guide
the rudder with ropes, you know, and the sails with ropes, or still do sails with ropes.
But they used to guide the ship with ropes, the rudder itself. You know, you'd pull one way, turn the rudder the other way.
And so the image here is the steering ropes of a ship,
whether it be the sails, the rudder.
And so what Solomon is alluding to here in this passage,
to know how to guide your ship of life correctly,
to know how to run the rudder and the sails.
You will learn that in this book, in the Book of Proverbs, to learn how to sail
the ship of life with the steering ropes of wisdom
that Solomon's going to be sharing throughout this book. Amen. I'm enjoying this lesson.
This is going to be good. Book of Proverbs.
We'll pick up tomorrow with verse 6.
I hope it's a blessing to you.
I encourage you to invite other people to Morning Manor.
And remember, it's out there for people to watch
at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. live streams that they can watch.
Well, not live, repeat stream from what we do at 8 a.m.
So tell others, the social media platform
where you're watching and tell them it's available
at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Eastern time,
and that they're gonna be fed the word of God
unlike anything they've ever had in their life,
and it's gonna change them.
Yes.
Okay? So I'm saying now don't
pay attention to the two teachers. Just listen to the Word of God. Okay. Don't get stuck on them.
Just listen to the Word of God and if you close your eyes you can actually
If you close your eyes, you can actually pretend it's not those two guys who are doing the teaching.
Okay?
I'm just, I'm trying to get people to understand.
Don't look at human instructors.
It's the Word of God.
Get the Word of God in you.
Yes.
That's what's important. Get the word of God in you. Yes. That's what's important.
Get the word of God in you.
The word will teach you.
We are just players on the stage.
Kim is asking, can they watch at other times?
Let's see.
Yes.
Yes, we are placing it on true news. And let's see. Yes.
Yes, we still we are placing it on true news.
True news is still up and running and morning man is there and we've got we're going to
change true news over to it's going to become Rick walls calm and then morning manna is
going to be available to the public
on faithandvalues.com.
The changes are underway.
We just haven't done it yet.
But they are coming.
But they can go to truenews.com right now and see it.
Yes.
Right.
And on all the social media platforms, too,
they maintain archives of our recent episodes of Morning Manor.
Are they there? We keep the archives on the social media platforms?
Yes.
Oh, okay. I didn't know that. Okay.
So they're available at those time, you know, on those channels as well.
And I posted those links here in our chat for folks to take advantage of.
Also, we've had some of you ask, how do you
sign up for the newsletter? Well, I made it easy for you. I posted the link in our
chat earlier today. You can take you directly to it and to the sign up page.
And so I made it easy for you. So if you haven't signed up for Rick's newsletter
yet, do that. By the way, we've had tremendous response to Rick's newsletter and we just
encourage you not only to subscribe to it, but share it. And that way others
can learn from it too. Rick's been providing some great insight on the
world and national headlines in his daily report, Rick Wild's report.
So we're putting it out late in the afternoon,
somewhere between three and 5 p.m.
And if you go to truenews.com,
scroll down to the bottom of the page,
sign up for the newsletter.

but if you haven't, that's where you go
and you will receive the newsletter automatically
every afternoon, sometime between three
and five p.m. Eastern time.
And it's just a story, I'm spending very little time
looking at the news, but I'm looking at it,
I say, okay, I've gotta keep myself slightly informed.
And so all I'm doing is just jotting down,
here are the things
that caught my attention and you might want to know it too. Without spending the
whole day building a news program around those items. That's the difference. We've
cut back on the amount of time given to news. We put it in its place. The Word of God is first
place. That's the change that we have. Okay, gotta go. Gotta let you go. You
gotta go out there in the world and be wise. Hey, be praying for us today. We
have to make some wise decisions today, and so be praying for us as well, if
you don't mind. So, praise God. All right, folks, we'll see you tomorrow on
