TRUNEWS with Rick Wiles - Morning Manna - October 14, 2025 - Proverbs 14:16-20 - When Wisdom Bows and Folly Boasts
Episode Date: October 14, 2025Proverbs 14:16–20 exposes the split between true reverence and reckless pride. The wise man fears and turns from evil, but the fool charges forward, blind in confidence. Quick tempers and cunning pl...ans both collapse under divine scrutiny, while prudence becomes a crown for the discerning. In time, evil itself must bow before righteousness—even as the world still flatters wealth and despises poverty. This Morning Manna teaching, featuring Rick Wiles and Doc Burkhart, highlights the moral law behind these verses: the fear of God produces stability, folly exalts itself to destruction, and heaven’s justice will reverse every false elevation. Good morning, everybody.
Welcome to Morning Manna on this Tuesday.
We are studying the Book of Proverbs.
We're in the 14th chapter.
Today we're looking at verses 16 through 20.
A lot of good material in these five verses.
So let's jump into it and see what the Holy Spirit is going to reveal to us today
as first ask him to come and lead this Bible study.
Almighty God, our Father in heaven, we bless you, Father, we praise you, we glorify you.
Father, we humbly request the presence of your Holy Spirit to direct this Morning Manah Bible study to teach all of us about the greatness of your kingdom, the glory of your son, Jesus Christ.
In his name, we pray. Amen.
And welcome, everyone, to Morning Man.
It's so privileged to have you here.
us on this crisp fall morning here in Vero Beach it may not be crisp where
you are but here in Vero Beach it was a very pleasant morning to be outside and
enjoy some of the cool dry weather for once so we thank the Lord for it and we
thank you for being here too no matter where you are in the world as far as
Australia and Russia and Japan and Malaysia and Brazil and across the US and
Canada today we are continuing our study in proper chapter
14 picking back up on verse 16 today i'm reading from the king james this morning reading verses 16
through 20 follow along with me please a wise man fear then departeth from evil but the fool
rageth and is confident he that is soon angry dealeth foolishly and a man of wicked devices
is hated the simple inherit a folly but the prudent are crowned with knowledge
The evil bowed before the good and the wicked at the gates of the righteous.
The poor is hated even of his own neighbor, but the rich hath many friends, don't they?
So-called friends.
Yeah.
Well, verse 16,
A wise man feareth and departeth from evil, but the fool rageth and is confident.
The Septuagint translation, a wise man fears and departs from evil, but the fool, trusting himself, mixes himself with sinners.
It's an interesting translation, which is, in my view, is the more accurate one.
Septuagint is always preferred for the Old Testament.
let's look at the first part a wise man feareth again the fear of the lord is not terror
it's not crouching in a corner shaking it's having reverent awe
to be reverent for the lord to be in awe of him to just be you know amazed at his
his greatness so much that you
there's a holy fear
that you're in the presence of a being
that made
the universe
with his faith
and his words
so
a person with true wisdom
lives under the consciousness
of God's holiness
and
it senses the gravity of
sin before it manifest.
I've said this before
about people who say
if Jesus would walk
into this room right now I would jump
and shout and dance
and I'm like no you wouldn't
you would fall down on the floor
your face
buried in the floor
you'd be crying holy holy holy
we have we really don't have much comprehension of the greatness of God
but when you do think about it
that it causes us to to contemplate the gravity of sin
before it manifests into reality
so wisdom's faith
excuse me
wisdom's fear
acts as faiths sentinel
it perceives danger
in temptation
judgment and disobedience
grief in offending the Lord
so the fear of the Lord
is spiritual caution
it's rooted in devotion
it moves the soul
to flee away from those
things that would wound our conscience quench grace offend the Lord so at the
heart of it a wise man or woman knows that self-confidence is actually just a
subtle form of rebellion yes if it's not submitted to Christ yes right now
the next part of this verse is and departeth from evil the thing that I see here is that
this this implies decisive movement away from not just mere hesitation hesitation is
you just pause you think about something and then you go on and continue to do
what you were doing this says departs from evil this is a decisive moment where the person says i am
i have made a decision to move away from this temptation to move away from these people why because
the wise man or woman does not negotiate with sin he
or she withdraws completely because there is a price a cost of proximity when there is a large fire you know
there's a limit on how close you can get to the fire that's right there is a limit and if you
continue to get closer to it you're going to get burned
so the wise man or woman withdraws completely so i am not even going to be close to this it's a so the
fear of the lord is like a it's like a moral reflex it's an immediate recoil from the appearance of
evil take take a mallard and hit hit your knee in your you get a reflex in your leg
that's that's what this is teaching that the fear of the lord causes a reflex you recoil from the
sight of evil i can't go there can't do this so we have to train our minds to be like that on
all sin you can you can resist 99% of temptation it only takes the one percent to fall
Amen.
See, you can look, say, I have resisted 99% of temptation.
But if you get into that 1%, that's all Satan needs to get his hooks into your life.
So we have to train ourselves to say, no, I leave any temptation.
I leave any appearance of evil.
I will not be around people that are gladly rejoicing in sinful behavior.
So spiritual maturity is not measured by how close we walk to sin without falling.
It's how far we flee from it.
It's dangerous to say, I want to see how close.
to the line I can get because you're at risk of tripping and falling over the line.
You know, if you're one foot from the line, it's a lot easier to lose your balance and trip
and go over the line than if you're a thousand feet from the line.
but the full rages and is confident
what does this mean what's your thoughts on that
the full rages and he's confident
and have you known people like that
that people are either
they're so dumb they don't know to be scared
I guess that's it
But as it relates to our spiritual walk, you know, the fool, first of all, the fool acknowledges that they have, that God has no authority in their life, okay?
But even in the midst of that, they are confident in it.
They are just, they hold no punches.
They don't even question.
And they say, well, I have no accountability.
I have, I don't need to be righteous.
And I don't even need to be wise.
And so they are confident in their, if you will, the rebellion.
Yeah, and I think you're right on this.
The King James using Rages is not rage like fury and anger.
Not like the Incredible Hulk or anything like that.
Right.
But the fool is just bursting out with foolishness.
Yes, it's everywhere.
yeah they're they're proud of it they're bursting out with their pride with their foolishness
and so the fool mocks restraint sees restraint as weakness the fool charges forward
trusting his or her instincts rather than waiting for godly counsel so his or hers
this confidence is actually it's presumption it's the the self-assurance of a blind man on the
edge of a cliff now think about how foolish that is it'd be a blind person on the edge of a cliff
and be confident you know where you're going right
Now, the wise man or woman, his or her fear produces discernment, but the fool's arrogance produces destruction.
Reverence will yield caution, rebellion will yield rashness.
Okay, so you see, there's a contrast of two postures.
The wise man or woman lives under authority.
The full lives under an illusion.
Yeah.
Their own illusion.
Right.
I've got a new commentator to throw into the mix here.
Actually, a pair of commentators that they specialize in Hebrew language.
It's Kyle and DeLage.
Oh, oh, man, Doc.
They're fantastic.
Yes. So in their analysis of the scripture, they compare the words fear and the raging as opposites.
And the way they described this is that the wise man, he ruled by reason, reason ruled by awe versus passion ruled by self for the fool.
In other words, the righteous person aligns himself with God's thinking.
the word of God, whereas the fool sets his own agenda, makes his own decisions without any
submission to divine authority in their life.
No, that's excellent.
So to fear and depart is to live by faith.
To rage and be confident is to trust in yourself to the point of ruin.
You got it.
Yes.
So one person depart.
from evil because he or she trusts God's word the other charges towards evil
because he trusts himself so it's a question of who do you trust when there
a game show in the 50s called who do you trust who do you trust if there
wasn't there should have been so I think there was doc I think there was a game
show who do you trust so this is what it means do you
trust God or do you trust yourself our greatest danger is not being deceived by
another person but being deceived by ourselves that's the that's the trap we
fall into so this there's a paradox here all right true courage fears
God. True faith flees from sin. True wisdom trembles at the edge of disobedience.
Let's keep that in mind. True courage fears God. True faith flees from sin. True wisdom trembles
at the edge of disobedience. John Gill said, the wise man fears offending God. Fears the power of sin.
and therefore departs.
The fool, fearless and presumptuous,
goes on in his wicked way,
relying on his own wisdom.
Charles Bridges.
The wise man's fear is his safety.
The fool's confidence is his ruin.
Holy fear guards faith,
while presumption betrays it.
Albert Barnes,
the fear of the Lord leads to prudent
withdrawal from temptation
the fool's reckless confidence
betrays his spiritual blindness
George Campbell Morgan
the wisdom that fears God
never fears men
the folly that trusts self
fears nothing not even judgment
yes
and Charles Spurgeon
a holy fear
is the pulse of a living
faith. The fool's
fearlessness is death disguised
as courage.
All right. First 17.
He that is
soon angry dealeth foolishly
and a man of wicked
devices is hated.
A subduigent
a passionate man
acts without counsel
but a patient man
bears much wisdom. A man
of evil devices is hateful the aramaic pashita he that is easily angered acts foolishly and a man
full of evil thoughts is hated this is going to be interesting let's see where this goes
all right so we'll start with the first part he that is soon angry it literally means
short-tempered okay
short-tempered hot-tempered person
somebody that can just
go off on
snap a finger
just anything sets them off
and they don't care
they don't care
they'll rip into somebody
they just they'll chew your head off
and they don't care
and they don't come back to make it right
don't apologize
don't apologize
It's just the way I am.
And you deserved it.
That's their attitude.
You deserved it.
I gave you what you deserved.
You set me off.
Yeah, you did it.
You made me angry.
That's the way they see it.
You got to talk.
You made me angry.
I wasn't angry until I met you.
You did it.
It was like David Banner.
Don't make me angry.
You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.
Right.
And so I wouldn't like it even less when you're angry.
See, Doc, I see narcissism in here.
The narcissist is always saying, you made me this way.
You know, I'm okay until I meet you.
It's you that's wrong.
If you weren't you, I wouldn't get angry.
You know, Rick, there's probably, I would say,
quite a few people who are on chat with us today live or watching this later that are
that deal with anger and that you know you feel it rising up in you and you feel like it has to be
released so this verse has applications to many people today maybe you're dealing with anger
maybe you're dealing with that anger that bubbles up just so quickly and you think it's out of
control. But the scripture is going to give us some guidance here on what you can do to get
that bridled. Anger itself is not wrong. True. It's unbridled, uncontrolled anger that's
wrong. Yes. Okay. So, and there's different types of anger. But this is talking about a hot
headed you know person that just blows off quickly okay it's he that is soon angry all right
quick to wrath hey don't mess with me that type of attitude you know people that when you see
them coming you're like oh oh there's going to be a fight there's going to be an argument
give them 10 minutes there's going to be an argument just give them 10 minutes there's going to be an argument
just give them enough time
they're going to be
insults flying
anybody know people like that
they just contentious
argumentative
and yet they always turn it around
and they say
you were the one that made me blow up like this
so
they live without
inner restraint
their anger, their feelings, their passion is sitting right on the surface of their soul.
They have no control over it.
They explained the way to themselves.
That's who I am.
That's the way I am.
I'm a passionate person.
and I expressed myself.
You know, the truth is they don't control themselves.
Correct.
And they've lived like that their entire lives.
They were like that as children.
Maybe they learned it from a parent.
Your mom was that way, or dad was that way, right?
Hot-tempered.
Maybe as a child they learned that, hey, if I threaten somebody, I get what I want.
and they go through life thinking this is the way you live if you want something just start to boil
people give in to you just give them what they want i don't want to see the temper
and they learn hey this works and they grow up into adults and hey you know i've been getting
my way for decades all i have to do is start swelling up turn red right
or threaten to do it.
Or threaten, yeah.
It's a way of life.
It's a way of living.
They don't know how to communicate.
And unfortunately, no one else knows how to live with them either.
That's right.
That's right.
Right?
They're living in fear because you never know when that person's going to blow up or, you know.
And they could be nice, 90% of the time, that 10% where the anger gets viewed out like a cobra venom.
And, Doc, one thing I've noticed about some people like this, they have imaginary arguments in their minds all day long.
In other words, they're arguing with you, Doc.
You're not even there.
You're not even in the room.
But they're arguing with you in their mind.
And when they do see you, they're ready to go off on you.
And you're like, what did I do?
What did I say?
And in their mind, they're like, oh, I know, I've been dealing with you all day long.
And you're like, this is delusional.
Now, they never come out and say, I've been arguing with you in my mind all day long, but they have been.
And that's why when you show up and they blow up over nothing, you're like, this is crazy.
But in that person's mind, no, you were arguing back.
back and forth with them all day long in their minds right they live in a state of anger and
temper and argument strife it has to be broken in them they're in it's a stronghold it's a
stronghold that has their mind and their emotions so that the short-tempered man or woman
reacts
before he or she
reflects
do you react or do you respond
I have to tell myself
all the time
respond don't react
I'm learning myself
how to deal with
difficult people
okay i'm sorry you have to deal with me all the time rick you're not brought me into your life
in order to you're not you're not difficult doc you're not difficult i you i sit i send you out to
deal with me that's true you do i don't want to handle this i don't want to deal with these
please could take care of it that is true that is true yes i've learned just let doc handle it
okay and then i won't say something that i regret say
hey we be transparent just be you know just say this is a problem okay uh so it's it's not that
anger itself is is condemned right it's ungoverned anger
because that reveals the absence of discipline in your life.
A person who's unable to discipline their thoughts and their tongue.
Then it says, he that is soon angry deals foolishly.
What does this mean?
the person who gets angry quickly deals foolishly it means that every act that's born of impulse
carries within it the seed of regret yes there's the folly here is these are decisions made in the heat of the moment
Not in the light of the moment.
Right.
Now, contrast that to the second part of this, in that you have some people that will go off quickly,
but you have others that we consider a slow burn, okay?
Those who plot vengeance, those who plot to harm others based on a seething deep anger that's there.
both are condemned here okay so just making it clear where Solomon's going with this in that
someone that's quickly angered they deal foolishly but that's I'm that's not pardoning the slow
burners all right so doc where I think where you're going on this all right so it's he that
is soon angry deals foolishly and then followed up
by and a man of wicked devices is hated okay so the first part is the the person who has a short fuse
he or she it says deals foolishly so their anger is on the throne in their life right and wisdom
wisdom can't get a seat in their life because anger is gripping the throne with both hands
right and so the idea is that you know someone that you know gets angry easily
even in the world today there's some pardon for them all right i'm not pardoning it i'm just saying
in the world because even the law will recognize that there are crimes of passion okay but
But when someone does something meticulously, and they plan it out, out of hatred, out of anger, that takes on a whole different level.
Both are condemned by Scripture.
And yet, there is a distinct difference between the two.
Yes.
So a wise person, so the question is, when do you count?
do you count before or after a provocation to anger the wise man or woman counts to 10 quietly in prayer
the fool counts the cost after he shoots off his mouth right so when somebody is
is angering you
you have to learn to
just start praying
quietly and Lord
I'm going to count the 20
and silently
as this person is
running his or her mouth
I'm just going to count
and let your Holy Spirit
bring calmness and peace
to me in the right words
okay
there
hey I'll
I'm really a big fan of Les Carter, Dr. Les Carter, and his two, to me, his two areas of expertise, he understands narcissism better than anybody I know on the planet.
I mean, he understands it.
The other thing is that he teaches on anger management.
Those are his two areas of expertise, anger management,
and what to do with narcissists.
That's why I really recommend just,
even if you're not dealing with narcissists,
even if you're not dealing with anger,
Just watch his videos and just learn about human behavior.
Right.
Yes.
If you watch 10 to 20 less Carter videos,
you will be smarter and wiser than you were before you started watching them.
He just has a calm confidence.
He knows who he is.
He likes who he is.
And he's not going to allow anybody to disrupt him.
And he's just a very,
impressive person but he you know he has a he teaches how to deal with
difficult people yes so I've learned a lot I've learned a lot watching I have
have this video yeah I mean there's great wisdom in in what he says when
somebody's insulting you what's the first thing when somebody's calling you names or
or, you know, just saying things that's insulting to you,
implying that you're track.
What's your first response?
Your first response is, I'm going to defend myself.
I'm going to argue back.
I'm going to push back against what you're saying.
But what Dr. Carter teaches is, no, just say calmly.
That's your opinion of me.
You're entitled to an opinion.
but I disagree
I have another opinion of me
and it's not what you say
so we disagree
yeah I would agree with you
but then we'd both be wrong
that's right
and so what do you do
with somebody you're if somebody
is
trash talking you and insulting you
and it's rude and you just say
I recognize that you're
opinion of me and you're entitled
to that opinion but I have
an opinion I'm entitled to
in my opinion, and my opinion of me is not the same as yours.
So, therefore, we're going to part our ways.
What does that other person say?
What's their comeback?
They don't have a comeback, but you've diffused the situation.
Instead of heated words, instead of, you know,
I mean, if it's guys, you're going to have two guys nose-to-nose ready to throw punches.
You just defuse it.
So learn these techniques when you're around an angry person, a person who is quick, hot-headed person.
Learn how to respond to a hot-headed person.
They have anger sitting on the throne of their heart.
Well, if anger is on the throne of their heart, I'll tell you who's not there, King Jesus.
right he doesn't share a seat he's not going to share a seat with with your anger so there's
you know doctors there's spiritual blindness here all right it's the failure to see god in the
moment of provocations okay so you asked quietly ask the lord how do i receive
respond in the spirit don't react in the flesh respond in the spirit right so this is and a
a man of wicked devices is hated so you got the first one the hot-tempered person deals
foolishly but a man of wicked devices is hated this is a different person doc this is the one that
you're talking about right this is the one that stews
in his or her anger
slow boil
and so we have two contrasts here
the first one is the one that lashes out the other one
that internalizes it
and haven't we been told that at one point
in our life either oh just express your anger
right but when you do you get condemned
the other side says well just
you know take that anger in and then
that anger starts eating away at your heart
when actually both are wrong what you need to do is you need to bring that anger before the Lord
bring it before it yes whether it's that uh that quick anger or that slow burn anger bring it before
the Lord recognize that you have a weakness in this area whether it's that fast response or
that slow burn either one they're going to kill you yes so we're talking about we're talking about
anger in both of these people the first one is the foolish one that is hot-tempered and that's
impulsiveness but now the other person is a man of wicked devices is hated this is intentional
wickedness the intent to harm because you're angry this is a person who plots schemes
revenge manipulates is going to get even okay we're we're still in talking about narcissism
covert passive aggressive narcissists will get even they are driven by revenge you made me
mad even though if they don't blow up see this is this is a covert it's
it's undercover all right that's why it's covert it's covered up you made me angry i'm going to
get even now they don't say it to you but inside they're saying oh you may be angry i am going
to get even with you you just watch what i'm going to do to you and that anger seaves in them
it just boils okay and they plot wicked devices
so the first person the hot tempered person their sin is their impatience but the second person's sin
is done by premeditation you got it the first one sins but i just blew up i just i don't have
any control over my mouth i just blow up i sinned okay the second one no i'm going to plot revenge that's the
sin the calmness is deception this person's heart works by evil design they are quietly planning
a way to get even okay how to covert passive aggressive narcissists get even well a number of
ways they'll have a flock of flying monkeys around them all right
You know the flying monkeys from the Wizard of Oz?
The wicked witch, she had her flying monkeys.
She'd send them out to do her evil deeds.
That's what the covert, passive, aggressive narcissist does.
He or she will have a fleet of flying monkeys.
These are the people that believe everything that the narcissist says.
And the narcissist will dispatch them.
Go badmouth this person.
And they'll give their flying monkeys instructions.
The flying monkeys don't, they're not perceiving it that way,
but the narcissist knows what he or she is doing.
In other words, they're going to plant thoughts
in the minds of the flying monkeys to get even with another person.
How do they do it?
Reputation destruction.
Spread malicious,
rumors, slander, defame, destroy a person's reputation. These are the
premedit, these are the wicked devices, how narcissists get even. Another way is to sabotage
the other person's works and projects. They go behind their back and they sabotage.
They cause things to fall apart. Another one is alienation.
isolation. They will cause that person's friends and family to isolate, to be alienated from them.
It's all wicked devices to get revenge. And the Bible calls this wicked devices. And it says, a man or woman, a wicked
devices is hated. Hated by whom? Ooh.
Now you have to answer that question.
Hate it by whom?
I wouldn't want to be hated by the Lord.
I wouldn't want my behavior to cause the Lord to hate my behavior.
Yes.
Okay.
But what you see in verse 17 is you've got the momentary fool,
the hot-headed momentary full,
and you have the malicious sinner.
And God abhors both behaviors.
The first one, the hot-headed fool lacks faith because he or she cannot wait.
They cannot control their mouth.
But the other one lacks faith because he or she will not repent.
the first one offends God by weakness the second one offends God by willfulness
yes there you go so the wise weight the fool rushes the wicked plots
that's it in a nutshell right there the wise weight the full rushes the wicked plots
I could have just said that and taught that verse in one sentence.
Matthew Henry, a man that is soon angry exposes himself and all that he does is foolish.
Anger in the heart is a fire in the house.
Yes.
If not quenched, it consumes.
Anger in the heart is a fire in the house.
That's a memorable line.
Albert Barnes
The Fool's wrath is as fire among thorns
quick, noisy, short
but the evil man's purpose
burns deep and lasting
Charles Spurgeon
anger is temporary insanity
he that would keep his reason
must keep his temper
we am or not
the one sins through want
of patience the other through want
of conscience. Both are under sin's dominion, yet the schemer is deeper in bondage.
Alexander McLaren, impulse may be forgiven, though it harms, but when anger becomes art,
sin has grown into a system.
Verse 18, the simple inherit folly, but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.
Praise God.
Septuagint the simple shall possess folly but the prudent shall lay hold upon knowledge
the Hebrew word here for simple this isn't an idiot doesn't mean an idiot okay
it's a person who's so open-minded that anything can come in it's a door without hinges
it's just open
it's wide open
their simplicity
is not innocence
it's the lack of discernment
they are unanchored
they're driven by emotion
feelings impulse opinions of others
they're swayed this way
swayed that way
there's no stability
in their thinking
the simple are believers in everything and learners of nothing right they believe everything and yet they
learn nothing because they live the moment say they're in the moment they don't have a memory
of the past they don't have an awareness of the future they only have
the now and whatever's happening around them that they're open to it yes a lot of people like
that says that they inherit folly but when you inherit something you're receiving something that's
been passed on to you as as a legal lasting possession
You own it.
Right.
So how did we inherit Folly?
How does the simple inherit Folly?
You're born a fool.
You're born a fool.
You are born a fool.
You've inherited it.
Yes, but...
Grandpa Adam at the beginning,
but even though you've inherited it,
you're living in the house.
You didn't have to keep it, though.
That's right.
So they live a lifetime
of careless listening, thoughtless living, never seeking wisdom, never trying to change,
to grow, to learn, to improve.
They just stay the same.
So they live out their inheritance, which is foolishness.
You don't have to, just because you're born with this inheritance.
we're in a fallen nature. You don't have to keep it. You can be born again. And guess what? You get a new
inheritance. That's right. You can be crowned. That's a different kind of award. It implies you've achieved a victory.
So there's the contrast there between the two. You've inherited folly. You don't have to stay there.
You can be crowned with knowledge. You can choose a different path than your folly.
Doc, it's like inheriting a house that it's an estate filled with mirrors and illusions and mirages.
Yeah, you inherit it.
It's like inheriting a bankrupt house.
Yes.
It's foreclosed.
You've inherited a foreclosed home.
What did you get?
debt that's what you've got yeah you got debt but the prudent okay the prudent are
those who use holy foresight they see not only what is before them but they see
what lies beneath and beyond they have an understanding of the past they have an
understanding of the past they have an insight into the future and all that shapes how they
behave today they are crowned not by their intellect alone but by the illumination of divine
truth in their life the prudent are not born wise they become wise by fearing God
continually we're all born into this world in a fallen world we're born with this foolish inheritance
but the prudent cashed aside and say i'm not going to stay a fool i'm going to learn the ways
of the lord and become wise and they are crowned with knowledge the wise are crowned with knowledge
symbol of victory, honor, favor.
So the crown, this crown of knowledge,
even though it's invisible, it's more real than anything else.
Because it crowns us with peace and discernment and moral authority.
one last thought on this verse the simple inherit folly it just falls to them by default yes so look at this doc
the simple inherit folly but the prudent are crowned yes the prudent do not inherit wisdom they're crowned
One receives the rewards of indifference.
The other one receives the honors of diligence.
So here's the lesson.
Whatever you cultivate in your thoughts becomes your inheritance in life.
Your soul is heir to whatever it worships.
That's the lesson in that verse.
whatever your soul worships
that's what you inherit
John Gill
the simple being void of the fear of God
inherit folly as their portion
the prudent taught of God
are adorned with knowledge
as with a crown of glory
Adam Clark
those who will not learn from instruction
must learn by punishment
wisdom crowns the humble
folly fetters the proud
Albert Barnes
the fool's inheritance
is inward blindness, the wise man's crown is illumination, each receives what he has chosen.
Alexander McLaren, the fool's mind is open to every breeze.
The prudent man's soul has the doors barred against lies and open toward the light of heaven.
Praise God. I like best.
G. Campbell Morgan, Folly is hereditary in the race.
but faith makes a new lineage the prudent becomes heirs not of ruin but of revelation
william are not inheritance as passive coronation is active the one receives without effort
the other wins by faith oh two more uh first nineteen the evil bow before the good and the wicked
at the gates of the righteous.
So this verse reveals the end of all moral struggle.
Righteousness will prevail because God reigns.
That is it in a nutshell.
Wickedness may flourish for a season,
but the sovereignty of divine justice
assures its eventual humiliation.
So the bowing here is both submission and acknowledgement.
It's forced respect for what they once despised.
Now, it may not be true everywhere right at this moment,
but it will be true.
Evil and the wicked will bow down.
And when Christ comes back, every knee,
shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord okay this has eternal meaning it has
meaning regarding eschatology the return of Christ evil will one day confess the supremacy of
almighty God
darkness will yield
to the dawn of his light
we may not see it right now
but we will see it when Christ returns
so
faith sees
ahead what history will one day
prove that holiness
shall have the last word
the evil bowed down
before the good
this is this denotes the evil denotes that those opposed to god's moral order these are active rebels
not just men and women who are sinning they're active rebels
this is not the bowing is not in reverence it's in submission reluctant submission
they're brought low by divine justice
on earth in time the proud are humbled by before those that they mock but in eternity in eternity they will they will bow their knee every single person who ever lived apart from christ will bow their knees before christ
the wicked at the gates of the righteous so the gate is the place of justice
the place of honor the place of public assembly to stand at the gates of the righteous
depicts dependence supplication the wicked seeking mercy
from those that they once despised so there's there's a reverse of the social order
the wicked who once ruled are now standing outside begging
for mercy right and it's the gates of the righteous and in the hebrew that's in the possessive
form it's the gates that belong to the righteous in other words we're ruling it's our gates
it's our gates that they have to submit to so we're when we are seated in heavenly
places in christ jesus we're ruling and reigning with them these are our gates
that's right so the faithful saints endure mockery because we know that righteousness will one day sit in judgment
just have to know that right certain things are going to happen in this earth we're never going to see
things made right in this in this life but they will be made right when christ returns
that's what we rest in i want to move on let's see john gill this is both this is true both
in providence and at the last day the evil though now proud and insolent shall be humbled before
the godly confessing their integrity and begging their favor charles bridges the believer may
be trampled now yet faith sees the knee of evil bent before truth god's order
may seem inverted, but it is only for a moment the tide of righteousness returns at last.
Adam Clark, the good man, hated and oppressed now, shall at last see his persecutors bow
before him. The proverb looks to the great and final retribution.
Alexander McLaren, the world's laughter at righteousness is short-lived.
God's eternal laughter and wickedness will echo forever.
G. Campbell Morgan, the moral structure of God's universe is such that goodness is enthroned.
Sin is only permitted rebellion until righteousness resumes her crown.
Oh, wow.
Charles Spurgeon, the wicked may vaunt themselves today, but tomorrow they shall bow.
God's justice has a long memory, and his mercy has the last word.
Okay, one more verse.
I'll let you go.
The poorest, verse 20, the poorest hate it even of his own neighbor, but the rich hath many friends.
This is not God's divine approval.
Correct.
This is an observation.
The Lord is not pleased with this.
This is a recognition.
This is the way human.
live you know well it's simply God recognizing that people despise the poor but they
they treat everybody wants to be a friend of the rich people that's just human
nature it's it's the fallen human nature the way of people but poverty exposes to corruption
of social affections the neighbor even close by uh rejects compassion even for their neighbor
You know, we see, you can drive here in Florida.
You can be on an old country road, and you can see a big house,
multimillion-dollar house.
And then around it are some very humble poor dwellings.
Are that rich person living next door to very poor people?
Do they have compassion on them?
Who's lining up to go to the house of the poor person
and who wants to get invited to the house of the rich person?
So this verse is not condemning the poor.
It's condemning the people who despise the poor.
Hate it even of his neighbor.
To be hated by your own neighbor,
intensifies the shame.
Because your neighbor, God commands us to love our neighbor.
So this isn't, the Hebrew word here does not necessarily mean vicious, angry hatred.
It can include cold neglect, disdain.
you know looking down your nose at somebody because of their poverty
neglecting their needs
so moral poverty follows material poverty
in the eyes of the world
as though failure in wealth implies failure and worth
There are many people
I'm thinking of one right now
I don't mean to criticize
I'm thinking of somebody right now
who judges everybody by their net worth
there are many people who do that
they judge people by their net worth
but billionaires
will not even hang out with
Billionaires.
Right.
You're not one of us.
You're a billionaire.
You could be worth a half billion.
They still won't invite you to their house because you're a half of a billionaire.
And even within the billionaire class, there are tears.
Right.
Are you worth $2 billion or $20 billion?
We've got some that within the next five years or so will be approaching a trillion dollars.
That's right.
And then a billionaire will not even get in.
invited to their parties.
It's just human nature.
Proverbs 1421,
which we're going to get to,
in a day or two here,
he that despiseth his neighbor's sins.
So heart without mercy
is the poorest heart of all.
To have new mercy.
is to you are poverty-stricken when you don't have mercy on people
I can say my wife's citizen is probably one of the most
compassionate people I know when it comes to poverty-stricken people
she was telling me last night doc she just came across another couple
she was
down at the
marina
here in Beiro Beach
a young couple
she said in their
early 30s
with two small children
living on a houseboat
and
she was just talking to them
and they're like
they can't afford rent
they're living on a boat
they don't have food
they can't find work
you know
um
you know
there's people hurting in the world
there are people hurting
so
what do we know about
the friends of the rich
they're seldom true friends
they're friends of your money
yes
they're friends of your
your stature
that's what they're friends with not you
you could be you could be replaced yes but you lose your money watch how fast they lose their
friendship richest draw men like moths to a candle they love the light not the flame
Same as people with money.
They're after the money.
They're not really desiring to be friends with the rich person.
They just want to be friends with the rich person's riches.
And rich people know it.
Deep down they know.
Ah, these people around me, they really don't love me.
They just want to be around me.
They want to be around my riches.
They know it.
all right let's see what uh
albert barnes the proverb records a sad truth of human life not a moral rule
wealth draws admiration poverty provokes disdain yet both are test of the heart
Alexander McLaren men rule the smile excuse me men court the smile of prosperity
and shrink from the shadow of need.
But the man of faith finds Christ in both.
G. Campbell Morgan, here is the contrast between human friendship and divine.
The poor man may be alone on earth, but never in heaven.
Charles Spurgeon, if a man loves you for your wealth, he will hate you for your want.
True friendship can be weighed only.
in the balance of affliction yes okay I apologize for being so late today and
finishing the class promise to be better tomorrow okay but 330 people are here
for the live class even though I'm late thank you so much you honor me well I would
say this to those that are dealing with issues of anger
I'm certain there's more than one,
is whether it's that flash and the pan anger
or that slow-burning anger,
bring both of them to the cross.
Bring both of them to the cross.
You may feel like it's impossible for this to be bridled
and to be restrained, and I know people would feel that way.
You feel like that they are angered.
It cannot be controlled.
I promise you, I guarantee you,
from my own personal experience i can tell you if you bring it to the cross
god will bring that straight restraining force into your life
vent your anger to him he'll he's a listening ear he'll listen to you he'll let you
say whatever you need to say just talk to him about it don't let that anger kill you
cause a heart attack or cause you to commit an even more grievous sin later on
So I would encourage you in that today.
Praise God.
