Good morning. Welcome to Morning Manna. It's Tuesday. We're glad to be back after the Labor Day weekend. And we are continuing our study of chapter 10 in the book of Proverbs today, verses 22 through 26. Let's pray. Almighty God, our Father in heaven. Father, we thank you for this beautiful, wonderful day. And we give you glory and honor and praise. Father, we invite your Holy Spirit.
spirit to lead this Morning Manna Bible study and teach all of us the depth of riches in your
word. In the name of Jesus, amen. Amen. Welcome to Morning Manna, everyone. We're so glad to have you
here from no matter where you are in the world today, places separated, Brazil, Russia, Istanbul
today, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Japan. So glad to have you here. And I know I forget
countries and everything i know ireland's here today i know switzerland's here today god bless you we
welcome you and of course everywhere you are across the u.s and canada today we're continuing our
study in proverb chapter 10 and we're looking at verses 22 through 26 today so if you've got your
bibles follow along with me as i ring from read from the king james this morning and if i'm if i
miss a word or two it's because my eyes have adjusted now to these new categories
racks. I'm having hard time with fine print, so be patient with me as I work through this,
okay? I'm getting some new glasses, hopefully later this week. All right, verse is 22 through 26.
The blessing of the Lord, it makes it rich, and he hath no sorrow with it. It is a sport to a fool to do
mischief, but a man of understanding hath wisdom. The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him,
but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.
the world wind passes so is the wicked no more but the righteous is an everlasting foundation verse
26 has vinegar to the teeth and as smoke to the eyes so is the sluggard to them that send him
god bless the reading of his word today amen verse 22 the blessing of the lord it maketh rich
and he addeth no sorrow with it.
This is talking about true prosperity.
True prosperity flows from God's blessings,
not human efforts alone.
Now you can become rich through your own efforts,
and many people do.
But that's not the blessing of the Lord.
See, this is talking about the blessing of the Lord.
The blessing of the Lord makes you rich.
It brings wealth and it adds no sorrow with it.
People become rich on their own.
They're their own hard work, their ingenuity, their scheming, the plots, whatever they do.
They can become rich, but it's not the blessing of the Lord.
Right.
Riches without God's blessings are not certain.
They're not stable.
They're vain.
They can actually be dangerous.
They can become a curse.
And they're what?
They could become a curse too.
Yes, they become a curse.
So the blessings of the Lord refer to material and spiritual riches.
It definitely includes material riches.
Money, possessions, homes, so forth, absolutely includes it.
but it also includes contentment peace joy wisdom eternal hope those are blessings that make you rich
and the person without god can never experience those blessings so god blesses god's blessing
his blessing let me put it like this the blessing of the lord sanctifies our labor
our work prospers when he favors it
you can work
and you can achieve and you can succeed
in the eyes of this world
but it doesn't mean God has blessed your work
the blessing the word here blessing
the Hebrew word is ashar
And it means to become rich, to make rich, to grow, to accumulate.
I'm not going to entertain anti-prosperity people who say it's unchristian to be successful.
That's a heresy.
the word of god says the blessing of the lord makes you rich right i'm going to go with what he says
if the if the word said the blessing of the lord makes you poor i go well that's the that's the
that's the way it is that's the way it is but that's not with it it's not what it says the blessing of
the lord makes you rich so accept it and walk in it and receive it
receive it and and and and enjoy it i've told you i've had trouble in the past enjoying the
lord's blessing because of guilt that people were putting on me religious guilt
well if you're in the ministry you shouldn't be successful really you should give away
everything right you should sacrifice and i did
give away i gave my life away i said lord i'm walking away from everything and he ended up blessing me
you know i i did that i did walk away from everything or they tried to spiritualize and say well
our our true our blessings are in heaven or that's true in in in eternity well there
But when Solomon was writing this, he was making it clear.
The blessing of Lord, it makes it rich.
He wasn't talking about something happening later on.
He said, right now, Solomon had so much silver that they piled it up outside of the city.
That's true, yes.
They had heaps of silver.
They didn't know what to do with all the silver.
Solomon said, just take it outside and put it on a,
Just in silver pile of silver.
Can you imagine going out with a wagon load of silver and just tossing it onto this pile of silver?
Or can you imagine someone coming before the king and offering this big mound of silver and everything?
And someone was, oh, well, we got a place for that.
Take it out to the silver dump.
now solomon was blessed yes now later in his life he messed up really big time i mean he made some
serious blunders but he was wealthy the lord blessed him and why did the lord make him rich
because the lord ask him what tell me what you desire and i'll give it to you and solomon said
i desire wisdom and understanding and god said because you've asked for wisdom and understanding i'm
going to give it to you, but I'm also going to make you rich.
See, Solomon didn't ask for riches.
He asked for wisdom and understanding, and God said, hey, that's bingo, that's the right
answer, but you also get riches.
Look at the same promises for you.
Today, you can begin today, your walk, your journey into prosperity.
It can begin today.
and it begins by changing the way you think the way you talk what you do you come into alignment
with the word of God get that get out of that poverty mindset that's the first thing you
got to you got to get the poverty out of your head before you can get it out of your life
it's a it's a big deal yes
We can have a we can have poverty mindset of lack of fear of lack that can come through our family, our parents and grandparents and so forth.
And when I was growing up my, we weren't, we weren't rich, but we weren't poor.
I guess, Doc, we were country blessed.
Yeah.
We had hogs, we had cows, we had chickens, we had corn, you know, we were blessed.
It wasn't wealthy, but we were blessed.
We had plenty to eat.
And you didn't know you wanted anything.
Yeah, I didn't know.
I didn't know that there was anything to want.
See, that's the way it was.
I didn't know that there was anything I should want.
I was content.
however because I was so close to my grandparents
they you know they were born in the 1890s
and they lived through
world war well they lived through several as children
several financial panics panic of 1897
trying to think of all the panics up in you know up and
until the Great Depression 1929 they went through World War I
the Spanish flu pandemic, they lost a child, three-year-old child.
They went through the Great Depression, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War.
And even though, you know, my grandparents were hardworking people and always had more than enough, they were givers.
They were always giving.
Yet they always told me stories of lack.
And I look back now, Doc, and I realize that my grandparents were greatly traumatized by the Great Depression.
They were traumatized.
It was worse than we can ever imagine.
And they never forgot it.
And they instilled in me, and that's one thing why I'm a prepper, because they instilled in me, you should always have food.
You should always have things prepared.
You never know when there's going to be a Great Depression.
You never know when there's going to be a war.
You never know when there's going to be a pandemic.
But a lot of that was driven by fear.
Right.
They were traumatized by those events in their early lives when they had five children to feed.
So this can be passed down in us, and we're not even aware of it.
I became aware of it years ago that that poverty, not poverty, fear of lack mindset,
was there in my in me of not resting in the Lord or having that worry in the back of your
mind you might lose everything yes see that came from my grandparents because they
almost lost everything you know I remember my grandfather telling me how he would
shoot sparrows out of the tree to make a sparrow sandwich for his lunch so that
his children had regular food
I mean
that was sacrificing
and yet
they fed the children next door
whose parents were even poor than they were
and my grandmother told me she said all
the way through the Great Depression I fed the neighbor's
children
that's how they
now see that's how they got through the depression
they were they were feeding other people
and that's a lesson for all of us
you can give your way out of poverty
you can give your way out of lack
so prosperity that's gained
lawfully
and blessed by God
becomes a
a blessing
and it's a stewardship. It's not a snare,
not a curse.
Wealth from God
comes with dignity.
Not shame.
With righteousness, not compromise.
Even modest provisions
when blessed by God
makes one richer than
abundance without his blessing and never forget this god's richest blessing in your life is found in
christ jesus ephesians one verse three says blessed be the god who has blessed us with all
spiritual blessings and heavenly places that's who you are today
You are blessed by God with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places.
That's you today.
That's right.
All of them.
All of them.
Paul.
That's not you after the resurrection.
That's you today.
You're blessed today with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places.
And then verse 22 says,
and he adds no sorrow with it.
See, wealth without God brings anxiety, sorrow, fear of loss, envy, moral compromise.
Right.
I have seen Christians who there are certain sins, they would.
never do and they would condemn anybody who did it and yet i've seen them do some pretty dirty things
to get money and they don't they don't see that as sin right i've seen some very greedy
christians and i'm like how do you explain the way you're greed you're quick to condemn other people
for their shortcomings, but you're greedy.
The blessing from the Lord brings peace and contentment.
And you don't have to compromise to receive it.
The riches of the wicked are mixed with worry, guilt, restless striving, anxiety,
and the desire for more.
and the hunger, the lust for more.
I get an example in the news over the weekend here.
Big story on social media and everything at the U.S. Open, I think it was on Friday,
that one of the tennis players was signing a hat for a little boy in the stand.
They signed the hat and handed the hat to the little boy,
and a man reached over and grabbed the hat out of the boy's hand.
and put it in his wife's bag and the man who took it uh if i and i understand correctly it
was the CEO of a big company out in poland oh he's wealthy very well off very rich extremely
wealthy yes and not only did he not apologize for he said that's the way it is you got to be
fast in this that's business that's like the man i used to know that's business
i did you weren't we got it on video and everything up to hold on to that hat
yeah so it's a hat it's a hat and yet you still have a little boy's hand greed would you desire to work for that man
absolutely not well i would want to buy one of his products i don't know what he sells whether it's
widgets or hand towels or whatever i wouldn't want anything to do with the company after that i hope i hope a player gave
the boy another hat he did that they they're after
after the uh after the crowd went away from i understand they've got the same tennis player
in video talking to a boy and giving him another hat but the fact of the matter is it just
that to have that man just so blatantly take it out of the boy's hand he could bought a
million hats probably but he would agree the greed just rose up in him and he did something
you know he couldn't retain he couldn't restrain himself he was on camera before millions of people
and he still he still displayed his greed that's right that's the sorrow of greed the sorrow of it the
sadness of it the grief that it causes that it's never satisfied it's like an open pit
it's like a hunger that is never satisfied that you you know you've got to have it why because
i want it not because i need it because or it's a tool or anything else but i i got to have
just because i want it and you got it and i want it now the reverse
would have been better had the hat been given to the man and then he received it and turned
to the little boy and said here you take it yeah
So when God blesses you,
his blessings come with peace and joy and freedom.
They don't come with strings attached.
God's blessings are,
his blessings are pure.
And there's no regret,
no bitterness.
Even trials that accompany the righteous are tempered
grace.
Amen.
When you go through a trial,
God greases the path
with grace.
Amen.
Did you ever think about that, Doc?
When you're going through trials and tribulations,
he greases your path with grace.
He's blessing you in your trial
and tribulation.
With grace.
You just skate through it.
Next time you're going through a trial
or tribulation, you just think
this path is so
covered in grace.
I'm having trouble standing up.
This is like being on ice.
It's just slick with grace.
Yes.
So true riches do not enslave you,
but they free your soul
to worship and serve the Lord
and give him Thanksgiving.
because there are no
there's no
negatives with the blessings of the Lord
you're free you're free to worship him
you're free to give him Thanksgiving and praise
amen
let's see what the
the old commentator said
John Gill
born 1697
it is the blessing of the Lord that
maketh rich not diligence nor art nor industry alone and he addeth no sorrow with it no vexation
no distress of mind no curse accompanies it adam clark born 1762 riches without the divine blessing
are only inherited curses with god's blessings they are comforts without it they are sorrows
multiplied. Charles Bridges, born 1794, the blessing of the Lord, maketh rich indeed.
How many have wealth without blessing, riches and sorrow together?
But the poor saint is rich in Christ, and no sorrow is added.
Hallelujah.
And Alexander McLaurin, born 1826, the blessing of the Lord hallows toil and sweetens possession.
I like the way that sounds.
Isn't they good?
It hallows the toil that you work to get it, and it sweetened your possession.
He went on to say, riches that are his great, excuse me, riches that are his gift are free from the poison that taints all else, anxieties, regrets, and guilty remembrances.
Praise God.
I like that.
Wow.
hallows the toil and sweetens the possession
verse 23
it is as sport to a fool
to do mischief
but a man of understanding has wisdom
so for the fools
sin is not only tolerated
but enjoyed
it's their pastime it's their entertainment it's their sport
they treat sin lightly
they see wrongdoing as a game
to entertain them
so it shows the corruption of their heart
here's how you know that their heart is grieved
the things that they do
should grieve them
but it pleases them
yes
that is a sign of a
of a wicked heart
a person who gets
pleasure from doing wrong
or hurting people
see
we get into narcissists
especially the
covert passive aggressive
narcissists
they actually receive pleasure from inflicting pain on somebody else yes and so
they're constantly trying to disregulate somebody throw them off get them confused
gaslight them and they're doing things to them to you know to upset them to mess up their
lives, and then they sit back and they enjoy watching that person try to cope with the
trouble the narcissist caused in his or her life.
That's right.
That is wicked.
It is wicked.
It's evil.
And there are people who do this every day.
They're doing it to their spouses.
They're doing it to their parents, their children, their brother, sisters.
They're doing it to their neighbors, co-workers.
They have a victim.
The covert, passive-aggressive narcissists has a victim,
and they're sucking energy out of that person's soul.
They're like vampires.
And they're pulling energy out of that person.
Vampires pull blood out, but narcissists pull energy out of a soul.
and they enjoy it.
It's sport to them.
I'm telling it it's really wicked.
If somebody's doing it to you,
you need to break it,
break off that relationship
because what they're doing is wicked.
They're something to destroy you.
That's right.
The end game is to destroy you.
To bring you to the place
where you're just a pitiful
mound of human flesh unable to stand up and act like a out of God created and made in the image
of the Lord. That's the purpose of this gaslighting. It's wicked. It's evil. It's driven by
demons. Excuse me. So the foals recreation is causing mischief, trouble. Waste
time on destructive behavior.
It's evidence of a seared conscience.
Pleasure is found in what should bring them shame.
Fools laugh at sin.
They mock God's laws.
They take delight in stirring strife in the righteous.
I just described narcissists.
Their sport may include gossip, deception, slander, defamation, rebellion, obstinence,
stubbornness, violence.
And each one of these things are pursued as a thrill.
entertainment they they love gossiping they love slandering they love defaming people why because they're
causing the victim to be dysregulated the victim will have to deal with the slander
or the the gossip and they and they will get joy and
I hate to use the word joy because joy is a biblical.
They get pleasure.
It's a sick,
demented pleasure that they get from hurting another person.
So to me, this verse warns that habitual laughter at sin
hardens the heart and leads to ruination.
Yes.
But a man of understanding has wisdom.
So, Doc, here's the contrast.
We've seen this contrast rule throughout Proverbs.
So we were first told about the fool,
but now a man of understanding has wisdom.
The man or woman of understanding finds pleasure in wisdom,
not causing mischief in trouble.
So wisdom is not just knowledge,
but it's skillful,
godly living applied in daily life.
So what delights the wise is what honors God and benefits other people.
It's not a burden, it's a joy.
See,
The wise finds satisfaction in doing what's right.
The fool finds satisfaction in doing what's wrong.
Yes.
So the wise man's sport, the wise man or woman's entertainment,
is meditating on God's word, walking in obedience and serving others.
And the fool says, are you serious?
You find that to be fun?
You get pleasure out of doing that?
Are you serious?
You spend an hour a day in a Bible lesson?
Give me a break.
There are people, most of the people in church would say,
I'm not going to spend an hour five days a week in a Bible study.
Boring.
That's how they would say, boring.
Yeah.
I see no value in it.
They see no richness in it.
but they'll go to church on Sunday and get a watered down tasteless sermon that makes them
soothes their conscience and they believe, yeah, I went to church.
But they don't know the word of God.
And the pastor doesn't know the word of God.
Yeah, that's at the heart of it.
So you've got two contrasting delights.
the full delights in sin
the wise delights in truth
and wisdom
shapes not only the decisions
that we make but also our affections
it changes what and who we love
wisdom is
both a duty and a delight
we have a duty
to be wise, but it's a delight
to be wise.
The wise
enjoys what's holy, the fool
enjoys what's wicked.
Let's see what
Alexander McLaren said.
Sin is the fool's plaything.
Wisdom is the
wise man's treasure.
What each man laughs
at shows what he is.
Huh.
Wow.
Doc, I would have loved to imagine sitting in McLaren's church.
We're just sitting in the parlorer with him on a Sunday afternoon, just talking.
Verse 24, the fear of the wicked.
It shall come upon him.
but the desire of the righteous shall be granted so you got a contrast both get something both something comes upon both the wicked and the wise the fear of the wicked shall come upon him wicked men live in hidden fear
deep down they know there's a judgment day what they dread most is what overtakes them
god allows their fears to be fulfilled the sinner reaps not only what he soes but what he
secretly fears now i'm going to give you a list of things
we can all be guilty of this fear of poverty fear of sickness fear of retribution the biggest one fear of
eternity do you fear poverty do you fear lack do you fear disease do you fear sickness
do you have a fear of death the righteous should have no fears fears
don't let the don't allow the devil to torment you with fears he will seek to make you
afraid he'll put people in your life who will try to make you afraid who will tell you that
they're going to do something bad to you to instill that fear don't let
to get in you.
Even in prosperity, many people are restless because they fear,
what if I lose all this prosperity?
Yeah.
And they go to bed tossing and turning, wondering,
should I invest it in gold?
Should I put it in the stock market?
Should I just buried in the yard?
What do I do with this money?
Do I pull down my barn?
see Satan's bearable right Satan's tormenting them they're blessed they're
prosperous and now they can't rest and enjoy it but it's the sign of a guilty
conscience they're unable to rest they're not resting in the Lord
look there's a
there's a deeper truth here
those who reject God in his ways
cannot escape his justice
and it's ironic
the sinners fears
run him
into the very doom
that he dreads
right
and like
Job saying, the thing I feared the most has come upon me.
I'm encouraging you to think, what do you fear?
What is Satan tormenting you with today telling you, you're going to lose it?
Is it your marriage, your family, your home, your income, your health?
What is it that he's tormenting you with?
Telling you, you're going to lose it.
and you're afraid
and he just keeps pushing
harder and harder
on that vulnerable spot in your soul
he found a place
where he can apply pressure
yes
I wish I could say
I've never done this in my life
but I've got to be honest with you folks
I have
you know
For the Bible teacher, I've got to tell you, I haven't messed up a lot.
That's why I love teaching the word because I need to hear it.
And I have an honest, sincere desire to help other people not make mistakes.
But you have to be honest with yourself and honest with the Lord.
when you see
when you see a weakness in you
just confess it to the Lord and say
I got a problem here father
could you take this away from me
not looking for
ways to punish you he's looking for ways
to bless you
it's it's
it's the devil
who's looking for ways to punish you
God's trying to find
ways to bless you but we get we we put roadblocks in front of the lord and we we stop his blessings
from flowing to us because we put all these things there like fear and worry and doubt and
unbelief but the desire of the righteous shall be granted the righteous don't live in fear they
live in hopeful desire they have an expected
of success.
They actually, they would be surprised by a lack of success.
See, that's when you know your mind has changed.
When you get to the place where the lack of success surprises you,
when you get to that place, you're moving your thinking, your mind, your spirit,
into flowing with the word of God.
Because the greatest thing that we can desire for this world,
obviously our salvation is at the top,
but if you're a believer, you already have that.
But next to that, you should be longing for his presence,
just to have his presence with you.
I can't think of another blessed.
blessing. It's greater than the presence of God's spirit with you 24 hours a day.
Just to be at peace.
You know, early this morning in my prayer time, I have a room I go into for my prayer.
Doc, I was
starting to think about some things
and
you know, suddenly I realized
my chest had become tight
and I stopped and said, oh, Lord,
I just got out of your presence
thinking about those problems
it caused my chest to get tight.
I've got to get back
into your presence.
to give these problems to you see how do you see how easy it is for the world for satan
to lure you out of the presence of god in his presence is peace and safety and comfort but the enemy is
trying to lure you out of that presence and we have to it sounds paradoxical but you have to work at
resting yes you have to work at resting I know I've told this story before but you know a couple
years ago when we sold our church building and property after the sale after the closing i was
over to church with the new pastor he's not a new pastor with the new owner of the church and and
we have known each other for years and and he said rick i i have to tell you that you know when we first
came out here to the church the the elders and the deacons every time we came here we all when we left we all
said there's such a peacefulness on that property and I said to him I said well I'm glad to
that pastor but do you know how many wars I had to fight to keep that peace and he laughed he
knew what I meant see even even maintaining peace requires battle and yet we we rest while we're
battling. Everything in God's kingdom is opposite. It's inverted from the world.
So the desires of the righteous, peace, holiness, eternal life,
they're all shaped by the Holy Spirit and God delights in giving them to us.
but you have to delight in desiring it
he's not going to give you something you don't desire
not going to give you something you don't delight in
so god hears the prayers of the righteous
and he'll and those prayers
when they align their desires with his will
he grants their prayer request
so the desires may not be granted immediately
but ultimately they are satisfied in God's perfect timing
amen
just wait for rest and wait
sometimes the Lord is doing a work in us
sometimes he's doing a work in somebody else
sometimes he's getting
natural material things in order
on earth
he's already he already
agreed to answer your prayer a long time ago
but sometimes he's got to
he has to get things
ready
to deliver the answer to your prayer.
So don't give up.
The righteous shall receive the fullness of their desire.
The fullness is eternal life with God.
The inheritance of His kingdom.
Hallelujah.
But that doesn't mean that we can't have blessings in this life.
that's right i you know i don't want to have an excuse or an out for folks that say well
we're all going to have the blessings in the future i don't disagree with that
there's going to be a fullness with it what was solomon talking about here under the
inspiration the holy spirit he wasn't talking about some far off fulfillment
he was talking to a son or a daughter here he said listen son listen daughter
if you're righteous, God will bless you.
And as he was writing it, he's telling an aide,
take that silver outside and pile it up.
Yeah.
I'll look out the window.
Look out there.
He said a big pile of silver.
That's how much the Lord has blessed me.
Now, you may not have a pile of silver in your backyard,
but have you, I'm blessed.
Rick, are you blessed?
I'm blessed.
I'm blessed.
I'm thinking to myself over the,
weekend what is it that i want what is it that i desire is there something i want is there something i'm
missing in my life is there do i is there a thing that i want to buy no i realize i realize that over
this weekend there's nothing in my life that i can purchase that i can go out and get that somehow
would make me more fulfilled i'm happy right now but lord has blessed to me
and a million dollars or a billion dollars wouldn't change that for anything i'm blessed now
and you know what's sad people who claim to be christians and they're not contented
they don't thank god for the blessings they don't they don't recognize how blessed they are
they gripe they complain they murmur and they're never satisfied right i don't get it i just don't get
it albert barnes born 1798 the fears of the wicked come as they dread them the righteous desire
nothing but what god approves and their desires are therefore fulfilled
Alexander McLaren
The contrast is between dread and hope
The one broods over shadows
That darken into realities
The other cherishes desires
That blossom into fulfillment
That's right
Here we got two more verses
Verse 25
As the wind passeth
So is the wicked no more
But the righteous is an everlasting foundation
World English Bible.
When the whirlwind passes, the wicked is no more,
but the righteous stand firm forever.
So this is comparing the wicket to chaff.
Those of you who have lived on a farm or lived in the country,
you know what chaff is.
chaff is the
the hall
the useless part of wheat
of any kind of a grain
and so it says the wicket are compared to chaff
when the wind blows
it's quickly scattered it leaves no trace
you can have a
pile of chaff
outside the barn
where in the old days
when it was
winnowed by hand
and the chaff
would build up like sawdust
and a windstorm comes in
and when the storm is over there's no chaff
right
that's what the wicked are
they have no
more grounding and permanence than chaff
just they're here one day and they're gone the next day
their prosperity their power
they're boasting vanish in a heartbeat
when calamity strikes
it's like
the parable of the two
homeowners that
Jesus said one built his house on sand and the other one built his house and rock.
The wicked builds on sand.
And when the storm comes, it falls.
It does not endure.
That whirlwind can be, it could be earthly judgment.
It could be sudden calamity.
It could be divine judgment.
But there's two things I see, Doc.
speed and finality
when the wind comes
it comes with speed
and when the wind stops
it's over
the wicket are swept away
with speed
and once they're swept away
they never return
so even when they seem strong
their empires are fragile
and one it only takes one storm
to reveal the weakness of their empire
their legacy doesn't endure
their name and influence perish with them
Psalm 1
the ungodly are not so
but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
Amen.
But the righteous is an everlasting foundation.
The righteous are not blown away.
The righteous become the foundation that endures.
Why?
Because they're rooted in God's truth.
And they stand firm when the storm arises.
The foundation is not moved.
not only is it not moved for the righteous that stands on it it strengthens others the righteous is an everlasting foundation
and their stability comes from trusting the lord who is the rock of ages isaiah 26 verse four trust ye in the lord forever for in the lord jehovah is everlasting strength
1 Corinthians 311 for no one can lay any other foundation than that which has been laid which is Jesus Christ
now unlike the wicket the righteous leave a lasting legacy their memory their influence their
testimony it all remains
The righteous are not destroyed by storms, but they're purified by storms.
And they're strengthened through storms.
The Bible doesn't say that storms don't come against the righteous.
It never says that.
It says the righteous are not blown away.
They're not swept away.
That's the difference.
So when you have a storm in your life, don't say, why, God, why did this happen to me?
just stand you'll come out at the end of the storm stronger better closer to god than you've
ever been why because your foundation is christ jesus
in whom your life is hidden
colosians three verse three says for you died and your life is hidden with christ in god
When did you die at baptism?
Did you realize that?
You were drowned under water.
Yeah.
They owed you.
You're hidden with Christ.
When you came out of the water,
you came out born again.
in Christ the one who rose from the dead so the ultimate reward of the righteous is eternal life they stand forever in god's kingdom so the lesson for us is don't envy the wicked their success they might be proud they've got all this glory and fame and riches the world heaps upon them
And then one day they're gone.
Like a whirlwind comes by and just wipes them away.
Think of the people that we hear the famous people that just one day they're gone.
So again, storms will come.
What's important is that you are anchored on God's word.
Trials, test, foundations.
That's the purpose of a storm.
A storm test the foundation.
Those rooted in righteousness will stand.
Christ is our true foundation, everlasting, unshaken, secure.
Matthew Henry, born 1662.
When the whirlwind of divine wrath comes,
comes, the wicked shall be no more, but the righteous being built on Christ, the rock, shall stand as an everlasting foundation.
Amen.
Alexander McLaren.
The world winds sweeps the wicked out of existence.
The righteous are as immovable as a rock.
They are not merely safe, but they themselves become foundations for others.
Okay, quickly, one more verse.
as vinegar
to the teeth
and as smoke to the eyes
so is the slugger to them that send him
as vinegar to the teeth
I think this is pretty easy to figure
out take a good
gulp of vinegar
undiluted just
fill your mouth up with vinegar
what do you get
it's sharp it's sour
it's irritating it sets the teeth on edge take a big gulp of vinegar and try not to wrinkle your face
yes I actually like the taste of vinegar I do too but I don't want to take a big chug of it
yeah I'm not gonna I have to dilute it who was it that I forget the doctor that has the
vinegar I can't think of his name
Now, yeah, I think you've got a bottle here at the office.
And I can't think of it.
Yeah, that's it.
I was at someone's house.
And they said, listen, you need to take, you know, drink three ounces of this every morning.
And so they said, here, you try it.
And so they gave me some of Bragg's vinegar and had you drink.
I drank it.
I was just like, man, if I drank that first thing in the morning, the rest of the day is going to be okay.
Because that's going to be the worst thing that's going to happen all day long.
That's right.
Yeah, you have to dilute it.
So why is vinegar to the teeth compared to a sluggard?
Remember what this says?
Vinegar to the teeth, smoke to the eyes.
So is the sluggard to those who send him?
Yes.
So it's giving us an image.
of an unpleasant experience of relying on a lazy person he brings irritation not relief the sluggard
spoils tasks and projects just as vinegar spoils the taste of good food unless it's on boil cabbage
in moderation a little of in moderation
but
laziness is it
and laziness is never in moderation
is it Rick? No
so
what should nourish instead
corrods
the sluggard turns
opportunity into disappointment
so
dependence on a slothful
lazy person
is as unpleasant
as drinking a mouthful of vinegar and as smoke to the eyes.
What does smoke to the eyes do to you?
Irritutes, things, blind your eyes, you're watering, you're rubbing your eyes.
Right.
And the only thing you're thinking, the only thing you're thinking about is the smoke in your eye.
You can't even think about anything else.
You can't function, nothing.
And what are you thinking?
I've got to get rid of it.
I've got to get it out of here because it's making work difficult.
So lazy people are irritating.
They make it difficult to get work done.
They sting.
They blind.
They cause confusion,
blurriness.
It's a picture of the frustration and hindrance caused by lazy people.
Instead of being helpful,
the lazy man or woman becomes a source of pain, obstruction, grief.
So just as if you're sitting by a fireplace or campfire and the smoke gets in your eyes,
just as the smoke ruins the comfort, the sluggard ruins the plans of those who trust him or her.
and both vinegar and smoke are disruptive and unwelcomed and they symbolize wasted reliance on unproductive
and says so is the slugger to them that send him the slugger the lazy person is unreliable
you send him on a task he delays he forgets he botches it
he does instead of easing your burdens
he adds to the burdens
right
so laziness is not neutral
it actively harms
the people depending on the slothful
to get his or her work done
Proverbs 6.6, remember we studied this a couple months ago.
Go to the aunt, you sluggard, consider her ways and be wise.
In a few, a month or two for now, we'll be at Proverbs 19.
Verse 15 says, slothfulness cast into a deep sleep.
The idle soul shall suffer hunger.
so a lazy disciple brings shame to the name of Christ
and the slugger brings shame to the employer
they don't follow through they don't get their work done
followers of Christ are dependable
they're diligent
they get their work done
Matthew Henry
The slothful man is not only grief to himself
But is vexation to all who employ him
Those who send him are disappointed
As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes
John Gill says
The Slugger neglects his business
Spoils it does it amiss
Adam Clark
As vinegar set to the teeth on edge
and smoke torments the eyes,
so the sluggard provokes and vexes those who trust him with any business.
Charles Bridges,
The sluggard is a sore trial.
He brings no comfort, only vexation.
He disappoints confidence,
mocks expectation,
and instead of easing burdens, adds to them.
Albert Barnes,
the proverb paints the sluggard as utterly unservable,
serviceable.
bringing irritation instead of help
grieve instead of gain
and McLaren
slothful men are not
merely useless
but troublesome
they hinder more than they help
and their indolence
indolence brings sting
and smart like vinegar and smoke
yes
so Doc McLauren had to deal
with lazy people
they're not
it's not a new thing is it no not at all solomon had to deal with lazy people yeah
don't be lazy okay work hard today you're right chris laziness is a choice
bob's right lazy people do just enough to get by in life all right these are not good
traits to have if you have any any any possible laziness in you repent and get rid of it it can
you can change it's not it's not a gene that you're born with it's a it's a it's a culmination of
a lifetime of thinking and habits behavior you can change those things you can become diligent
hardworking. You weren't born to be a sluggard. Remember, you're made in the lightness and
image of God. That's who you are. Live up to the standard God has for you. All right. That's
it for today. We're over time. Got to go. All right. Well, we appreciate you being here with us today
