Christmas and Resurrection Day are my favorite holidays.
Both are entirely about Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior.
Now, if you ask people, why do we celebrate Christmas?
They would say, a baby Jesus was born in a manger.
And that would be correct.
But if you ask them, why was Jesus born in a manger?
Most people would not know the correct answer.
Well, I'm going to tell you why Jesus was born.
You don't want to miss this message.

My topic is, why do we celebrate Christmas?
Many people casually think that Jesus Christ was the son of Joseph and Mary Christ. Well,
Christ is in his family name. Christ means anointed one. Jesus is the anointed one.
And many people who accept the belief that Jesus is the savior of the world, also mistakenly believe that God chose baby Jesus
from among all the babies on the earth at that time to be a special baby. They think that God
in heaven looked down and pointed at infant Jesus in Bethlehem and said, that's the one,
that's the one I will anoint and make him my son. I'll give him
supernatural powers on earth to raise the dead and make blind people see. I'll lead him to the
cross to be killed for the sins of the people, but I'll raise him from the dead. And after the
crucifixion, Jesus will become immortal. Well, that's not biblical. First, let's establish a very important fact.
Jesus was fully God before He was a baby.
He left His heavenly domain as the only begotten Son of God the Father.
He was worshiped by angels before the beginning of time.
Jesus was God.
He has always existed.
He is the second member of the triune Godhead.
God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
I want you to meditate on this amazing thought.
Nine months before the first Christmas, over 2,000
years ago in human time, God the Father dispatched his wonderful son Jesus to
leave the splendor of heaven and go to the earth. It meant that Jesus would have
to exit his heavenly dimension and enter humanity's
physical dimension of time, space, and matter. He had to burst out of His dimension and enter
into our dimension of reality. I want you to imagine the scene in heaven. The royal Godhead, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit was worshipped by tens of
millions of angels. They cried daily, Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to
come. Our limited carnal human brains cannot fathom the awesome holiness and glory of God and the spectacular splendor of the city of heaven.
Yet God the Father had an assignment for God the Son. He asked his son Jesus to leave the city of
heaven and travel to earth and enter the womb of a young woman as a human embryo.
Instantly, in a millisecond, Jesus, the Son of God, the Word,
disappeared from God's throne room.
Multitudes of singing angels gasped,
Jesus' crown, His robe, His scepter fell to the floor in heaven.
He was gone.
The angels looked around in shock and said, where did he go?
Jesus traveled at a speed that's incomprehensible to the human mind.
He left heaven and traveled faster than light.
He cracked through the barrier that's between heaven and our dimension of time, space,
and matter. Jesus, the one who is ageless, unlimited, and spiritual, entered into mankind's
limited dimension of time, space, and matter. Jesus entered the womb of a young woman named Mary. He made himself an embryo inside the womb of a
woman that he formed. It was Jesus who breathed into Mary a soul at conception.
It was Jesus who breathed life into her nostrils at birth. This thought astounds me. Jesus, the Son of God, miraculously became the
Son of Mary the human. Nine months later, Jesus was born in a manger in Bethlehem
in Palestine. The angels sang, Peace on earth, goodwill toward men why why did God the Son Jesus
why did he have to leave heaven and become a human embryo inside a human
being that he made well the Christmas story is told in the Gospel of the Lord
according to st. Luke In chapter one, we read
that Caesar Augustus issued a decree that everybody should be taxed. Each person was required to go to
his or her hometown to pay the tax. Joseph was betrothed to Mary, but Mary was pregnant with
the Christ child. Together they traveled from Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem in Judea
because Joseph was of the house and lineage of King David.
While in Bethlehem, Mary went into labor,
and the couple tried to get a room in the town's inn,
but there were no vacancies.
Mary gave birth to Jesus, wrapped him in strips of clothing,
and laid the child in
a manger. Meanwhile, there were shepherds living in the nearby fields, keeping
watch over their flocks. That first Christmas night, an angel appeared. The
men were frightened by his glory. The angel said to the shepherds, listen, do
not fear, for I bring you news, good news of great joy, which will be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
And this will be a sign to you.
You will find the baby wrapped in strips of cloth lying in a manger.
Suddenly, there was with the angel a company of the heavenly host,
praising God and saying,
Glory to God in the highest and on earth, peace and goodwill toward men.
When the angels went away from them into the heaven,
the shepherds said to each other,
Let us now go to Bethlehem and see what has happened, which the Lord has made known to us. They quickly went to
Bethlehem and they found Mary, Joseph and the baby lying in a manger. They told everybody in town
what they had heard and seen. And the people marveled at what the shepherds told them.
The angels sang.
Why did the angels sing?
And why did they sing peace on earth, goodwill toward men?
Were the angels announcing world peace?
Were they proclaiming the end of wars and conflicts between nations on earth?
To find the answer, we have to
rewind time and go back to the creation of the universe in life. Now for the
record, I believe the book of Genesis. If Genesis is wrong, then the revelation of
Jesus Christ is wrong too. If Genesis is not true, there is no need for the Gospels according to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
God created the heavens, the planets, and all life in six days, and He rested on the seventh.
I spoke earlier that Jesus didn't become a living being on the night he was born in Bethlehem.
Jesus has always existed.
Everything that was made was made by him.
In the first chapter of the book of Colossians, verses 16 and 17,
scripture says this about Jesus.
For by him, all things were created that are in heaven and that are in earth, visible and invisible,
whether they are thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created by Him and for Him.
He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Jesus is also the Word
of God. The Bible contains God's words to mankind. Jesus and the Word are synonymous.
They are one and the same. In the first chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John, the
Holy Bible says this about Jesus, "...in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was
with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things
were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. In him was
life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness
comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a
witness, to bear witness of the light, that all men through
him might believe. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. That was the
true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world
was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them
that believe on his name, which were born not of blood, nor the will of the flesh, nor the will of the flesh nor the will of man but of God and the Word was made
flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld his glory the glory as of the only
begotten of a father full of grace and truth my friend the word the word became
flesh and dwelt among us and we saw His glory, the glory as the
only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. And here is something that is
absolutely essential for salvation. You must believe that God came to earth as
human flesh and dwelt among us.
This is the heart of the good news. Anybody who refuses to confess that Jesus Christ is God in human flesh,
that person is anti-Christ.
St. John said,
And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God.
And this is that spirit of Antichrist,
whereof ye have heard that it should come,
and even now already is it in the world.
According to St. John, God the Father authorized God the Son, Jesus,
who is the Word of God, to create the universe,
the earth, and all life.
John wrote that all things were made by Jesus, and without Jesus was not anything made that
was made.
In Jesus was life, and the life was the light of men.
My question to you today is, why do we celebrate Christmas?
To know the answer, we must start at the beginning, at creation. Genesis 2, verses 1 through 10,
the Bible says, Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made, and. And on the seventh day, God ended his work, which he had made.
And he rested on the seventh day from all his work, which he had made.
And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it because that in it, he had rested from all his work, which God created and made.
These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created in the
day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens and every plant of the field before
it was in the earth and every herb of the field before it grew for the Lord God had
not caused it to rain upon the earth and there was not a man to till the ground.
But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils
the breath of life, and man became a living soul.
And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there he put the man whom
he had formed, and out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the
sight, and good for food, and the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of
knowledge of good and evil. And a river went out of Eden to water the garden,
and from thence it was parted and became into foreheads. Now, my friend, man was not created.
Man was made. Man was formed. There's a difference. God spoke into existence, the universe, the stars, the planets, the animals, and the plants.
But God formed man with his own hands.
God made us, you and me, with dirt and water.
And I like to remind people, don't ever think that you're great and important,
because you and I are merely mud pies with eyes.
Almighty God spoke the universe into existence, but he used his own
hands to form man from the dust of the earth. And he used his own breath to breathe life into
Adam's nostrils and make him a living soul. The first human was Adam. He was made, not created.
He was not made in the Garden of Eden.
He was made outside the Garden.
And God moved him into the Garden.
The placement of Adam in the Garden was an act of God's grace and kindness.
Eden was a wasteland, but the Garden was paradise. It was a miniature heaven on earth. The garden of
Eden was a palace garden made by God as His residence on earth. It was where God desired
to live among human beings that He formed and among their offspring. It was where the humans would worship God,
talk with God, and fellowship with God
in an atmosphere of peace, rest, and abundant provision.
Genesis 2, verses 15 and 17 says,
And the Lord God took the man
and put him into the Garden of Eden to dress it and to keep
it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest eat freely,
but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil thou shalt not eat of it, for in the day that thou eateth thereof, thou shalt surely die.
Adam, the first man, was given instructions by God.
The instructions were simple.
Keep and dress the garden.
Adam did not have to work to make food grow.
That was God's responsibility.
Adam's responsibility was to tend to the garden and
protect it. In verse 18, God said, it is not good that the man should be alone. I will make him
a help meat for him. In verses 21 through 25, the Bible says, and the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept.
And he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh instead thereof.
And the rib which the Lord had taken from man made he a woman and brought her unto man.
And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.
She shall be called woman because she
was taken out of man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto
his wife and they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked and the man and the woman and his
wife were not ashamed. Now, my friend, this is a beautiful picture of our salvation in Jesus Christ.
Let me explain.
God put Adam into a deep sleep.
In his deep sleep, God opened Adam's side and brought forth his wife Eve. Thousands of years later, Jesus Christ, the last Adam, was placed
into a deep sleep upon the cross at Calvary. And while hanging dead on the cross, his side was opened by a Roman soldier who shoved a spear into his ribs. From Jesus's side poured water and blood.
This represents baptism and holy communion. And from Jesus's side came forth his glorious bride, Bride, the Christian church. God formed Adam in Eden, the wasteland, and placed him in the garden paradise.
He formed Eve in the garden.
The garden was God's paradise on earth where God desired to live with men and women.
Instead, most humans today waste away their days on earth dwelling in Eden's wasteland.
God, however, desires that you and I live in paradise with him where he can talk with you and fellowship with you and provide all your needs.
Adam didn't need to work to make a living.
He didn't work to make plants and trees grow in the garden. God abundantly
blessed the garden. God blessed the garden because God desired to have time fellowshipping with the
humans he formed. He didn't want humans groveling all day in the fields to find enough food for the
day to eat. We see the same principle thousands of years later when God led the Hebrews to the promised
land.
Most of the Hebrews never entered the promised land because they never entered into God's
rest.
Hebrews chapter 4, verses 8 through 11.
For if Jesus had given them rest, he would not have later spoken of another day. Hebrews 4, verses 8-11. Let us labor therefore to enter that rest, lest anyone fall by the same pattern of unbelief.
God instructed man to tend and keep the garden. Adam's responsibility was to take care of the
garden. And God gave Adam another instruction. The commandment was, of every tree of the garden you may freely eat, but of the tree of
the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely
die. Now, as I said, Eve was formed from Adam's rib after God gave Adam the commandment. Eve did not hear God give that commandment.
He gave the commandment to Adam.
Adam was expected to teach the commandment to his wife and future family.
So husbands, your responsibility is to tend to your life's garden
and teach God's commandments to your wife and
your children. Men, it is your responsibility to keep the serpent away from your wife and children
and home. God's creation was perfect. Adam and Eve were meant to live forever. Decay and death
was not in God's creation plan. His desire was to
fellowship with the humans He formed, and He desired to bless them. This is the essence of
why man is on earth. God truly desires to have a love relationship with humans, to talk with them,
and bless them. Saint Irenaeus was a bishop in the early church,
and he was led to Jesus Christ by St. Polycarp.
And Polycarp was led to Jesus Christ and mentored by St. John.
Speaking of the reason God formed man in the garden,
Bishop Irenaeus said, quote, God formed Adam not as if he stood in need of man,
but so that he might have someone upon whom to confer his benefits.
End of quote.
In other words, God's overflowing generosity and love required that he have somebody to bless.
Therefore, he formed man.
If you get this into your mind and into your heart,
it will set you free from dead religion, poverty, lack, sickness, and depression.
God formed man.
He formed you so he would have somebody to bless.
While things were going well on the new earth, there was trouble, however, back home in heaven.
Lucifer the archangel became enraged with jealousy and envy when he observed the love and affection God had for the
humans he formed on earth. And Lucifer craved to be the center of God's attention in heaven.
Pride came into his heart, and pride conceived sin. Sin produced a spirit of rebellion, and God was compelled to evict Lucifer from heaven.
A large number of angels went with him too.
Lucifer fell to earth, and Isaiah said,
How are you fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning?
How you are cut down to the ground, you who weaken the nations. Satan was furious over his eviction
from heaven. He seethed with jealousy and envy over the way God loved and blessed Adam and Eve.
And Lucifer schemed and plotted to get even with God. And a wicked thought came into Lucifer's mind.
He desired to hurt God, to get even. And the most effective way to get revenge
against God would be to entrap God's man and woman into violating his
commandments. Why would this plan work? Well, here's the answer. Lucifer was booted from heaven
because God is holy, and sin was found in Lucifer. Sin cannot be in God's presence. If Lucifer could
entice Adam and Eve to sin, God would be compelled by his own principles to evict Adam and Eve from
the garden, just like Lucifer was kicked out of heaven.
And this is when Lucifer became Satan, the apostate angel.
Satan means apostate.
The devil is the adversary of God's commandments. He's always tempting humans to violate God's holy commandments.
Now, Satan tempted Eve to sin against God, and Eve lured her husband Adam
to participate in her sin. Adam could have stopped it. He could have stopped Eve, but he caved in
to her suggestion. Both immediately suffered penalties. First, spiritual death came into them.
Their souls died.
Second, they were cut off from fellowship with their Maker, God.
Third, they were evicted from the garden.
Fourth, Adam was cursed and required to work by the sweat of his brow to make food grow in Eden's wasteland, that dry, barren soil.
Fifth, Eve was cursed with pain during childbirth.
She was also placed under the rulership of her husband.
Sixth, physical death came to them.
Their physical bodies became mortal.
Many years later, Adam and Eve physically died.
And ever since that day, every human being, you, me, everybody,
everybody who has been born has been born with Adam and Eve's original sin.
When we came out of our mother's womb, our physical body was alive,
but our soul was dead.
Spiritually, we were stillborn.
And that's why you and I must be born again.
In the third chapter of the Gospel of our Lord, according to St. John,
Jesus told Nicodemus, a high-ranking Pharisee,
He said, quote,
Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a man is born again, he cannot see the
kingdom of God. Nicodemus replied, how can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time
into his mother's womb and be born? And Jesus said, truly, truly, I say to you, unless a man is born
of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Now Jesus was speaking of salvation at water baptism.
When did the Holy Spirit descend upon Jesus?
It was when Jesus came out of the water at his baptism in the Jordan River by John the Baptist.
Jesus showed us that we must follow his example of baptism.
Every human being since Adam and Eve were born with a dead spirit.
Their soul was alive when they were born.
Their mind was alive, but their spirit was dead. I should say,
their body was alive when they were born.
Their mind was alive, but they were born with a dead spirit.
They were born spiritually, D-O-A, dead on arrival.
This is why you must be born again.
Jesus Christ, the last Adam, overcame death,
the curse that came upon Adam and Eve in the garden when they sinned against God.
When you believe on the name of Jesus Christ as Savior,
when you repent of your sins and you're baptized in water,
the Spirit of the living God comes into you and brings to you life,
brings life to your dead spirit, and your dead spirit is born again.
Now let's go back to the birth of Jesus.
Imagine this scene in heaven.
God the Father said, one of us must go down to earth and become a human.
One of us must live on earth without sin.
One of us must be sacrificed on a tree for their sins.
Why a tree?
Because mankind's soul was lost on a tree in the Garden of Eden.
And mankind could only be redeemed on a tree.
I can imagine God saying,
one of us must die.
One of us must be buried and descend to the place of the dead.
One of us must overcome death and take away from Satan the keys of Hades and death.
One of us must be resurrected from the dead
and return to heaven in a glorified human body. And if one of
us must return to earth someday, open all the graves and resurrect the dead. Jesus said, Father,
I'll do it. I'll do it, Father. That's the moment when Jesus vanished from heaven, broke into our dimension of time, space, and matter,
entered Mary's womb as a human embryo.
God came to earth as human flesh.
On the night that he was born in Bethlehem, angels in the sky sang,
Peace on earth, goodwill toward men.
What was the peace?
The angels were not proclaiming a time of world peace between nations.
It was not a cessation of wars and conflicts.
It was a grand announcement from heaven that the conflict between fallen humanity and the divine creator of the universe was over.
Mankind had been cut off from God ever since Eve sinned in the garden.
Now peace was declared between God and mankind. God declared that the long age of mankind's
separation from him had ended. Heaven was extending goodwill toward humanity. The time of reconciliation had arrived.
The old covenant that God made with the Jews was ending. A new and better covenant between God
and all of mankind would soon be revealed. This new covenant was not limited to Jews. The new covenant is for every man and woman and child on earth.
All races, all nations are invited to come to the garden to be reunited with their maker.
30 years later, Jesus, after 30 years after his birth, Jesus began his public ministry.
His first sermon was, repent, the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
How must you enter the kingdom?
You must be born again.
Why?
Because you came out of your mother's womb with a dead soul.
Every human is born with Adam and Eve's
original sin. Sin causes death and separation from God. Only the blood of a spotless lamb atones for
sin. And Jesus is the Lamb of God who was slain for the remission of sins. When John the Baptist
saw Jesus walking toward him to be baptized in water,
John exclaimed, Behold, the Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world.
How and when are our sins taken away?
Our sins are taken away when we repent and with faith call upon the name of Jesus Christ to save us.
When we are baptized in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Mark 16, verse 16.
Jesus said, he who believes and is baptized will be saved.
But he who does not believe will be condemned.
Why did the angels sing peace on earth, goodwill toward men? They rejoiced knowing that God had
inaugurated a divine plan to redeem fallen humanity from the curse of sin. The Savior
of the world was born in Bethlehem. The promised Messiah had arrived and the angels sang. God
formed man to have somebody to love, somebody to bless.
He placed man in paradise, the Garden of Eden.
Man fell into sin and lost possession of paradise.
Many centuries later, God led the Hebrews out of Egypt to Canaan.
Canaan was their promised land.
It was a miniature Garden of Eden paradise.
The Hebrews, however, also fell into sin in idolatry, and they too got booted out
of their paradise. Thousands of years later, God sent His Son to earth in human
flesh. He is the second man, the last Adam. Jesus did not fall into sin.
He lived a sinless life.
The Jews and the Romans crucified Jesus, a perfect, sinless man.
And the sins of all humanity were placed on Jesus when he was nailed to the cross.
Jesus died for our sins.
He was buried.
He descended to the place of the dead.
He overcame death, and he victoriously rose from the dead.
He ascended to heaven.
He sits at the right hand of God the Father and he shall come again to rule forever.
Why do we celebrate Christmas?
Why did the angels sing?
They announced the message of good tidings. The good tidings were prophesied
centuries earlier by Isaiah. Good tidings means positive information about something good that
happened. The angels said it was more than good information. They said the news would bring great joy meant for all people of the earth.
The angels sang in the nighttime sky because Bethlehem,
they sang in the nighttime sky above Bethlehem because God was announcing
that a way was made for men and women to be restored to their creator.
The two worlds had been separated for thousands of years because of Eve's
sin. A virgin conceived and gave birth to a God-man. The last Adam, the second man, had been born in
Bethlehem. And this was the good tidings of great joy. This is the good news from heaven that would bring peace and goodwill from God to mankind.
Fallen humanity could be restored to their maker.
The Savior of mankind had been born.
And someday mankind would live with God again
in paradise forever.
That's why the angels sang over Bethlehem, peace on earth,
goodwill toward men. The war was over between God and humanity. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
From that day onward until the end of this world, every man and woman who repents believes on the name of
Jesus Christ as Savior and is baptized in water shall be saved for eternity.
What about you? Have angels sang over your salvation? If you are saved, the
angels sang when your name was written in God's book of life.
Luke 15 verse 10 tells us,
Likewise, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.
If you have not been born again by faith in Jesus Christ and in baptism's bath of regeneration,
you too can make the angels sing.
All you need to do is repent of your sins,
believe on the name of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior,
confess Him with your mouth,
and be baptized in water in the name of the Father,
the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Haste, haste to bring Him laud
The Babe, the Son of Mary While I see in such mean estate
Where oxen and ass are feeding
Good Christians fear for sinners here
The silent word is bleeding
Nails pierced shall pierce him through

Hail, hail the worthy flesh

Come peasant king to own him
