Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey everyone, thanks for listening to RU Talk and REM ReMe. Before we get started, I want to tell you, along with my... You just turned me down. Turn me back up. Sorry, sorry. All right, there we go. I want to... Adam and I, my good friend Adam here, and I want to tell you about Lisa.
Starting point is 00:00:15 And by the way, Adam, you just ordered a Lisa mattress. Am I right by that? I did. I got one for my daughter. Really? And it's great. Oh my God, I can't believe it. So what Lisa is... Well, believe it. I guess I god i can't believe it so uh what lisa is well
Starting point is 00:00:26 believe i guess i can't believe it's so hard to believe yeah i mean it's just a pretty typical story i mean anyone can do it i think that's what we're even trying to say anyone can do this and it arrives and it arrives it's an innovative direct-to-consumer online mattress brand that is also socially conscious in fact for every 10 mattresses that Lisa sells, they donate one to a shelter through their 110 program. Not to mention, Adam, but I am going to mention it. With a patented universal adaptive feel, Lisa is designed for sleepers of all types,
Starting point is 00:00:59 and now they have expanded their offerings to include the Lisa pillow, the Lisa blanket, the Lisa foundation, and the Lisa frame. Try a Lisa mattress in your own home for 100 nights risk-free. There are no risks. Absolutely no risks unless you think it's a risk to have the most comfortable sleep you've ever had. Yeah, unless you think it's a risk to look well-rested. I think it's a risk to look well-rested. Available in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Germany online with free shipping,
Starting point is 00:01:34 this 100% American-made mattress ships compressed in a box right to your door or to Adam's door if he were to order one, which he did. It comes in a box that's about the size of, you know, Listerine breath strips? Yeah, not the size of those, certainly. Those are tiny. No, it's much more substantial, much bigger than that. Like if you were to put an enlarging ray onto it and- And enlarge it up to- Like Ant-Man.
Starting point is 00:01:56 Yes. In a lot of ways, and enlarge it to about the size of a mini fridge. Yeah, that's how big it is. That's how big it is. Great analogy. Or you could try this at the Lisa Dream Gallery in Soho, NYC, and Virginia Beach, and over 80 West Elm stores nationwide get $160 off when you go to lisa.com slash REM. That's L-E-E-S-A dot com slash REM.
Starting point is 00:02:19 From chronic to collapse, town and into now, respectively, that is, this is Are You Talking R.E.M. ReMe, the comprehensive and encyclopedic compendium of all things R.E.M. This is good rock and roll music. Music. It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while.
Starting point is 00:02:38 It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while.
Starting point is 00:02:46 It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while. And it has been a while since our last episode of what we are calling Stained Glass. Welcome to episode two of Stained Glass. Shit, man. How long has it been?
Starting point is 00:03:02 God damn it. Four years. No. Yes. No. We taped it on Memorial Day of 2014. That's literally on Memorial Day. That is, guys, that's bonkers. That's bunkers. That's bunkeroonies. Let's hear a little more. Listen to that stuff. A little more. So, okay. A little more. Tell me if I'm wrong. This song that we're listening to now, it's been a while. It's been a while. By Stained, is four years older than the last time we did an episode. It's almost legal.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Oh, finally. Welcome back. Before we get to what you're listening to and why, I have to introduce my co-host for all episodes of are you talking harry emery me harry he is the lead actor on various projects and products and and forms of content products okay i'll take it he a lot of times if you buy a blu-ray of one of his movies it will come with a free digital download code that's right please welcome adam scott hi guys uh king of the download code that's me kinging the DLC right over here, Adam Scott.
Starting point is 00:04:26 How are you? Hey, guys. Hey, everybody. What's up? Do you want to say hi to anyone? Just want to say hi to everybody out there. Welcome to the show. Everybody, thanks for coming. This is going to be a great show. See you in a bit.
Starting point is 00:04:43 Now, you realize you don't have to reach them with the sound of your voice from here. No, I'm at a music festival. I'm coming out, and I'm just in between sets. I'm coming out and just saying hello to the audience. See you in a bit. See you in a bit, everybody. It's going to be fun. Thanks for coming out.
Starting point is 00:04:58 Let's go. Thanks for coming out. Now, do you want to introduce me? I've done you the great pleasure of introducing you. Sitting across from me, this great guy. Everybody, do you want to introduce me? I've done you the great pleasure of introducing you. Sitting across from me, this great guy, everybody, welcome. It's a guy you know. Comedy Bang Bang. Shut the fuck up.
Starting point is 00:05:15 Shut the fuck up. Star of the Mid, everybody. Yeah. Is that a chant coming from the audience? Shut the fuck up. Yeah, that was everyone in unison wanting you to shut the fuck up. Oh my God. And bring out me okay um we over the past few months we have been doing uh the the show how
Starting point is 00:05:33 are you talking harry m remy where we discuss exclusively the band harry m including uh and not limited to but uh definitely including their the band members names uh and we've been doing that and we've had a great time doing it. It's been a great time. It's been a great time. It's been a great time. Time, but a time. It's been a time.
Starting point is 00:05:52 It's been a time. But every once in a while, you've got to just shunt that to the side, and you've got to get back with some old bros, and you've got to do another episode of something that you've only done one episode of. You just have to. You got to. And that's what we're doing here today. Let me set the scene.
Starting point is 00:06:14 Approximately four years ago, we were in the middle of our Hue 2 show. Hue 2. Hue 2. two and we were anytime anyone on an episode of this show anytime adam or i would say it's been a while which comes up in conversation way more than you think a lot quite often uh yeah and in fact i have sent you uh adam i have sent i have video uh what i'm trying to say videotapes taped off my phone i've pointed the camera on my phone at my television when you've been in a movie and said it and taped you saying it. There was a movie you did with Alison Brie or something where she goes. And I say it's been a while?
Starting point is 00:06:56 Yeah, like you guys used to date or something like that. And she walks into your office and you're like, it's been a while. And I sent it to you. It comes up all the time. All the time. And any time we would say it on this show and also my other show, Comedy Bang Bang, we would then say, it's been a while. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:15 To the point where people said, you know, you should do a whole episode about the music of the band Stained, who sing that song, It's Been A While. episode about the music of the band Stained, who sing that song, it's been a while. But they said you should also do it with our upcoming guest because if you did that, then you could call it Stained Glass because his last name is Glass. Great idea. Great idea. Expertly pitched. I bought it in the room.
Starting point is 00:07:41 Yeah. And when I say that, meaning I don't know who pitched it. But you purchased it. How much did it cost? To be honest, it cost me $3 million. $3 million. Worth every single penny. All three of them.
Starting point is 00:07:59 Yep. And so we did, four years ago on Memorial Day, somehow we Day. Wait, we spent our Memorial Day? Yes, from 9 p.m. to about 11.30. I listened to it yesterday. Am I allowed to talk? No! Shut up! Shut up, you whore mouth!
Starting point is 00:08:18 Shut the fuck up! But Memorial Day four years ago, we all gathered together, had a great time putting it out. That was, of course, in the middle of the U2 era of our show. And he is here to do another episode where we're going to talk about the music of Stained. We're going to talk about the music of Hariem and various other things. He is – let me describe him. Let me count the ways of how to describe him.
Starting point is 00:08:47 He has, oh, I wanted to, I looked up your Wikipedia the other day, and so I wanted to bring this up. But he's a wonderful stand-up comic. He is an author. You were plugging your book last time you were here, which was coming out the very next week. So it's been out four years, and I had not read it at that time, and I have since read it and thought it was a great book.
Starting point is 00:09:09 What is that called? The Todd Glass Situation, I believe. Wonderful book. He has a podcast, The Todd Glass Show, which, according to your Wikipedia, this is what I want to bring up. What about my Netflix special? Your Netflix special is great. It just came out in February, right? What's it called?
Starting point is 00:09:27 Actappy. Actappy. Actappy. Actappy. Actappy. It's been a while. It's been a while. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:09:34 Thank you, Todd. But according to your Wikipedia, your podcast, it has been rated the number one podcast by the Podcasters Association of America america paa every year since its debut and then there's a little bracket citation needed which leads me to believe this is fake i don't if it's fake i don't know anything about it this is a fake thing i don't know anything about it's fake i know that we got the award i'm honored. I don't make a big deal about it. Every single year. We have a jingle. So the PAA, Podcast Association of America, PAA has rated your show the number one podcast across the board of all podcasts.
Starting point is 00:10:16 Not to be stupid about it, but when it has PAA, doesn't that mean it's official? PA. Yeah, PA. Even he knows it. So this is a fake thing. I don't think it's fake. All I know is we got the jingle in the mail. We, Pa. Even he knows it. So this is a fake thing. I don't think it's fake. All I know is we got the jingle in the mail. We play it.
Starting point is 00:10:28 I don't know if you can just play a jingle. You got the jingle in the mail? They sent us a jingle. In the mail? Snail mail? No, in the email. In the email. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:38 They sent you a jingle. Yeah, well, once you get the award, you get a jingle. I'll send it to you if you want to throw it in. Wait, part of the award is getting a song of theirs? Oh, this is so complicated. They're very strict about the way that you advertise it on your show, so they have to make, it's like, The Todd Glass Show, the number one podcast voted by the Podcasters Association,
Starting point is 00:10:58 something like that. Something like that, yeah. I'll send it to you, and you can put it in post. Yeah, we'll do it at the end. And by the way, do you think they're giving it to you every year because they don't want to make a new jingle that's what my mom said she told it to me she told last night when i was fucking her would you i'm nervous serious question and we'll get to why you're nervous okay serious question if i started a loving consensual relationship with your mom,
Starting point is 00:11:26 would you be okay with it? Because you're slightly older than me, although how much older you seem very cagey about. I don't believe another part of your Wikipedia, and that is your date of birth. How old does Wikipedia say Todd is? Todd apparently I hate age Todd apparently is 53 years old
Starting point is 00:11:48 You don't believe that? I'll tell you why he doesn't believe it I believe you've been 53 for the past 30 years I'll tell you why you don't believe it Because when you're at a certain age You'll get the gist of what I'm saying The younger you are, the more the gap is different So a lot of my friends
Starting point is 00:12:04 When I was 25 And they were like you know, like 20, you know, you have your friends, little brothers or people, you know, in your life, comedians. So when they're like, when you're, when you're 19 and someone else is 26, that's a big deal. You're basically, you're 19. And I got to know you when I was 25. So you thought that that age gap back then was such a big deal. Years later, like for instance, when you're 62 and someone else is 72, who gives a shit? I gotta say, you were not
Starting point is 00:12:31 32 when I met you. Well, that's my age. That is my honest age. Very good. Am I right in it? Just be honest with me. Am I right that you're younger than me, but not as younger than me than you thought? That's where it has to stem from. Yeah, because when I first got to know you, I thought you were 40. I've always looked older than I was. Yeah, you have that certain thing where you look the
Starting point is 00:12:56 age that you are. Also, when you're 25, you think that anyone who's over 30 may as well be 40. Yeah, that's a good point. That's a good point. I don't mean to blow up your spot. You're doing well. You've tended to your Wikipedia page appropriately. And have you noticed since you've turned 40 or were even close to 40, you notice people in their 20s talking about 40 like it's – Oh, yeah. You have a thing about it in your act.
Starting point is 00:13:20 It's like the person – it's like they're 40. The 50 is what you use. Yeah, I have a joke. When you're young, me and my brother would be like, when we're 50, we'll still be doing bits. Like, we'll be like, hey, Michael, I'm 50 today. Yeah. But I hate it.
Starting point is 00:13:32 Because I feel like in comedy, it's the one place you can be ageless. Why not do the punchline of your bit? Oh. Yeah. But 50 today is like, hey, I'm 50. I'm in a band. We're playing Thursday night. But back then, it was like.
Starting point is 00:13:43 See, that makes us laugh. Yes. I'm 50. The funny part of the, we're playing Thursday night. But back then it was like... See, that makes us laugh. Yes. I'm 50. The funny part of the joke makes us laugh. Sure. The setup, it's like, have you ever thought about doing a tour that's just setups? Well, that's been my career. Hello!
Starting point is 00:13:55 But yeah, I feel like it's the one... Todd Glass is here. ...where you can be ageless. Hello, Todd. Until somebody brings it up. It's a great intro. Thank you. It's a nice, long intro.
Starting point is 00:14:04 Yeah, calling me a liar. Hello, liar, you're on line two. But my question, and we'll get to why you're nervous. Yeah, I am, very. You're supposedly five years older than me. if I were to go – but you are older and you're – I don't even consider myself to be a peer because I consider you to be a much more advanced comedian than I am and you've been doing it so much longer than I. But so I'm almost like a subordinate to you in a way.
Starting point is 00:14:38 I wouldn't consider us peers. I consider myself as a person who looks up to Todd Glass. But if I were to start having sexual relations with your mother, would that be fine? I know the answer. Yeah. What's the answer? When my dad died, my mom was like, I think my dad was 46.
Starting point is 00:14:55 My mom was 44. And in the beginning, we'd never looked at her as anybody would look at a guy. She said a guy was good looking once, like three years after my dad had died. And we're like, oh, in the car. Me and my brother's like, okay. All right, Mom, put it back away. But this is a crass but a joke that comes from a lot of love and how we had to grow as her sons. We went from not wanting to see her with any guy to once we realized that if she's not with somebody, that means it's just us and her and she doesn't have a life outside of us. So we went from, we can't even imagine my mom looking at a guy, to somebody fuck her.
Starting point is 00:15:28 Yeah. So you would be fine. She would be happy as hell to have you. But, I mean, the age difference is— I don't care. You wouldn't care. No, I don't care. You wouldn't care, and you wouldn't care that I'm in comedy.
Starting point is 00:15:39 If you loved her, no. And I would. I would, like, very much be in love with her. Would you be happy at all uncomfortable at their wedding? No, I think I'd be fine with it. We talked about weddings a lot. You would try to control it a bit more than you tried to control my wedding because— No, your wedding was great.
Starting point is 00:15:57 We've talked about that. Yes, you got it. But I think if it was your mother, you would try— I wasn't invited. You guys didn't even know each other. We knew each other, but we were not close. I guess not. You told me.
Starting point is 00:16:07 You texted me. I think I have it. Yeah. You said, hold on. Oh, shit. I can't find it. Oh, here it is. There's no fucking way I'm going to a train station to watch a wedding.
Starting point is 00:16:15 That's right. You found that text so quickly from 10 years ago. Also, I wasn't invited, but there was no way I would go. But, yeah, so I think that's an honest answer. And give me an honest answer about this. What if you heard there was a slight bit of overlap between me and your father? Oh. I think I'd be like, I'm seeing someone that's a lot younger, so I don't—
Starting point is 00:16:39 You're seeing someone that's a lot younger? Who's this person you're seeing? I don't want to say—well, it doesn't matter. But he's 30 years younger? Who's this person you're seeing? I don't want to say that. Well, it doesn't matter. But you're not public with your- But he's 30 years younger. 30 years younger? 23. 24.
Starting point is 00:16:50 25. Just turned 25. So 20, 31. Something's not adding up. No, no, no. It is. You're just out to get me. You're so angry.
Starting point is 00:16:58 I think it's all about your age. I really do. I wish we had a safe word in here. I think you can- You wish we had a safe word here? You know how sometimes you're serious in here I think you can You wish we had a safe word here? Like when you're You know how sometimes You're serious
Starting point is 00:17:06 But people think you're kidding Like we have a word on my podcast To George Carlin And it's really helpful In the midst of a lot of chaos To have a safe word to go Someone goes Are you serious?
Starting point is 00:17:14 And you go to George Carlin And you never break that And it's so much fun to have And weird incidents We're not having that on the show Well if we do Maybe the Podcast Association of America Would honor us Would perk up a little bit I can't believe they've never even Given an honorable mention to this show. Well, if we do, maybe the Podcast Association of America would honor us.
Starting point is 00:17:25 Perk up a little bit. I can't believe they've never even given an honorable mention to this show. It is a real award. That's all I know and I'm not trying to
Starting point is 00:17:32 make a big deal about it. You're obviously not making a big deal. But I would be happy if you dated my mom. Matter of fact, I can make you an offer if you just
Starting point is 00:17:40 touch her tits. Is she not with anyone currently? She is. She is. Yeah. So how long have you been in this relationship, Todd? About two years. Two years.
Starting point is 00:17:52 It's long distance, but it's good. Oh, it's long distance. Where's the person residing? I don't know. Yeah, he might listen to the show. In Denver. In Denver, okay. But he's in Amsterdam right now.
Starting point is 00:18:05 Okay. What's he doing in Amsterdam? He's playing, not professionally, but he's playing rugby. Is he, okay, so is he an athlete of some sort? No, not by profession. Is he a comedian? No. Do you have the same?
Starting point is 00:18:16 No. So it's not, you know, Adam, Kate, and Holland or any of those Denver guys? Yes, it is. What about- Adam said keep it a secret. What about, he plays rugby it a secret. What about... He plays rugby in Amsterdam, but not professionally. He just went there for like...
Starting point is 00:18:31 A tournament. Yes, for a tournament. Non-professional tournament. Non-professional tournament. I mean, I guess it's got him to Amsterdam, so... So, I mean, it's professional in the sense of he got room and board out of this and perhaps travel costs. Yes, exactly. So it's semi-professional.
Starting point is 00:18:45 Yeah. But anyway, but it's all good. Yes, exactly. So it's semi-professional. Yeah. But anyway, but it's all good, you know, and the age is like, look, I get it. Like, because I felt like when it happened, people would be like, oh, no, if someone's 10, 15, 20, but there is an age where we would all go to where you think is that a person emotionally stimulating this person, even though we don't want to make judgment. Like, but I get when people saw us together, I was a little paranoid that they might go, really, but if anybody watched from afar us on how it works, we'd go,
Starting point is 00:19:13 I should probably shut up unless we're getting along as well as them because it just works. It just works for what I do for a living. Are there any cultural references that are a problem? Nothing. It's crazy. Does he make a joke about Kesha? No, but I will tell you.
Starting point is 00:19:28 I think it's the other way around. Usually it's the older person making jokes and the younger person going, who's that? I think with Todd, it's the younger person knows everything. And Todd's constantly like, who's that? What is that? What's Star Wars? Who's Frank Sinatra? I know more about.
Starting point is 00:19:41 That's why I got nervous doing the show again because thought, last night I said to a friend of mine, I said, well, what do they talk about on that show now? Because I don't know, like last time I didn't know a lot about music, but what if I know a lot about music this time? What if I know more than I did? So he said, R.E.M., and he goes, name one of their songs. I'm like, I know I heard one of them. I think he, I go, I think I'm okay.
Starting point is 00:20:01 Yeah, you're okay. But I know more about new music. Like, I know a lot of new bands because of the person I'm seeing and also because of kids that work on my podcast that are younger that put music on my phone. Sure. So what do you like now? What is out there now that you like?
Starting point is 00:20:18 I mean, of course I won't be able to think of anything now, but like The Tallest Man on Earth, Body Was Made, Ezra Furman, I like, you know, Mac DeMarco, some of his stuff. Some of his stuff. What's your problem with the rest of his stuff? Some of it sucks. Even I heard a band the other night, Foxygen, and I didn't listen to a lot of their music, but the two songs I heard I liked.
Starting point is 00:20:45 Who else? There's a lot of their music, but the two songs I heard I liked. Who else? There's a lot of good new music. Okay, now we were talking about David Bowie prior to the show, Adam and I, and we were talking about David Bowie's Heroes because we were doing the— You are very nervous. We were talking about David Bowie's Heroes because we were doing the ad from last week, and you said to me, you said, David Bowie, Heroes, that's a cover. Who originally does it?
Starting point is 00:21:09 Is that what your question was? Yes. I know. So what do you think about that song? What do you know about David Bowie? Oh, David. I know. Actually, in the last four months, I learned a little.
Starting point is 00:21:20 I mean, I know who David Bowie is, of course, and does it. What do you know? Yeah, but who is it? I knew. No, no, no, no. I mean, I know who David Bowie is, of course. What do you know? Yeah, but who is he? I knew... No, no, no, no. I know... Hold on, hold on, hold on. I'm not...
Starting point is 00:21:31 Oh, I know that... Well, I know he's David Bowie. He's like, you know, and I know he died a little while ago. He died? Okay, good. And I know he had an alter ego that he did on stage. That's what I just learned. That's what I can't remember.
Starting point is 00:21:40 Who do you think that was? I know it's not... Oh, shit. I was going to cheat a little and study before I came here. Please don't cheat. He's named after a cartoon, like a comic strip in the newspaper. You're talking about his alter ego? Is that what it's called? An alter ego? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:54 It's not Sergeant, no, that was the Beatles, right? No, Sergeant Pepper. Yes, that was the Beatles. But think of... Oh, wait, I got it. Who's a comic strip character? Fuck, I knew this. I knew this on the's a comic strip character? Fuck, I knew this. I knew this on the car. I remember thinking, like... Think of any comic strip character.
Starting point is 00:22:09 Someone who loves big sandwiches. Someone who loves big sandwiches? Do you know, like, sandwiches stacked up really high? I don't like big sandwiches, by the way. I know that's not what we're here to talk about. Oh, no, let's talk about it. It's a great new band. Well, it's never a selling point for me.
Starting point is 00:22:21 When people go, oh, these sandwiches are so big. Yeah, well, you're not selling me on it. Oh, it's so big you can't even fit it in your mouth. Oh, that's not the type of sandwich I like. I like a sandwich. The reason I'm eating a sandwich is because I want the bread I want, the turkey I want, a little bit of avocado, a little bit of basil, and every bite I want a little bit of everything. I don't want a sandwich I can't fit in my mouth.
Starting point is 00:22:39 That's not appealing to me. People, they love telling you, and they think you don't believe them. They go, no, no, no, they're this tall, I swear to God! I believe you! I still don't fucking want it. Well, there is one comic strip character that loves sandwiches. Different strokes for different folks. Iggy Pop. No.
Starting point is 00:22:55 Very close. By the way, I tried to, I thought that's what he was telling me. Don't, please don't. Your friend is here, please don't give any hints. You know when you bring someone and they go up to the mic? We're going to have to put you behind a partition or something. I bring good people. No, no. It's not Iggy Pop.
Starting point is 00:23:08 It's Sgt. Pepper's. Think of any, like who are some comic strip characters? I don't like it starting like this. Can we just? No, who are some comics? Like just think of any comic strip. Any comic strip? Like you're reading the newspaper.
Starting point is 00:23:18 You go to the comic section. I didn't really read the paper. I even like the smell of papers. I get mad at people that have papers on the train still. Yeah. Put your fucking paper away. Taking up read the paper. I even like the smell of papers. I get mad at people that have papers on the train still. Put your fucking paper away. Taking up all the room. And then it smells like shit in the newspaper room and your dad has it in the bathroom. You know the smell of shit in the newspaper?
Starting point is 00:23:34 It's not fresh. No, well, also hot newspapers. Like we got the Sunday. Coolop ordered the Sunday paper recently. I was like, what are you doing that for? You're never going to read it. It sits out there in the driveway and gets incredibly hot. And it smells terrible.
Starting point is 00:23:51 The plastic on it gets hot. Well, the plastic, but the paper itself is hot. It smells like hot newspaper. Dennis the Menace is a cartoon. Dennis, okay. I know it's not Dennis the Menace. I'm not playing. It's not Dennis the Menace.
Starting point is 00:24:01 I'm saying the first name is the name of this alter ego so if it were Dennis the Menace it would be Dennis what? Dennis I'm trying to give you a hint what would be the
Starting point is 00:24:14 last name of this alter ego? it's a two named it's a two named alter ego and the first name is the name of a cartoon character can I ask you a question? yeah I want to just right off the top
Starting point is 00:24:22 sure my not knowing this is it that is there a lot of people maybe listening that don't know it either? I would say anyone 30 and under maybe doesn't know. I don't know. I don't know. It's one of his most famous songs.
Starting point is 00:24:35 You're trying to figure out, I'm trying to figure out what David Bowie's alter ego is. Yes. And you're telling me if I think of a cartoon that that would help me. I'm saying, yes. It's a very, it's not Dennis, by the way. Just for argument's sake, let's use Dennis. But let's use Dennis.
Starting point is 00:24:49 What would it be? Ziggy, am I right? Squiggy? Is Squiggy a cartoon character or is Ziggy a cartoon character? It's too hard for me to think of the cartoon character.
Starting point is 00:24:58 Is Ziggy a cartoon character? No. Iggy. No. Very close. I know now. What about Beetle Bailey? What about Beetle Bailey? No. No, you don't now. I'm just saying. What about Beetle Bailey? What about Beetle Bailey?
Starting point is 00:25:06 No. No, you don't think it's Beetle Bailey? What about Garfield? No, I know it's not that. It's like the same thing as last time. What about Charlie Brown? Blondie? Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:25:17 Hagar the Horrible? Hagar? No. As soon as I hear it, I'm going to know it. Like, I'm going to probably... Really? Do you think that's true? Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:25:26 Oh. Can we tell Todd that he said it? He said it already. You said it already. Oh, I did. Okay, hold on. Let me think of it. And then you said it was not.
Starting point is 00:25:36 He was all crazy, and his hair was... Well, his hair was always... But he was different. He would, like, wear different things, and it was like... He had his different... Didn't he have different... It was, like, crazy. It was crazy. He had different clothes? Is that what you're trying to say different – didn't he have different – it was like crazy. It was crazy.
Starting point is 00:25:45 He had different clothes. Is that what you're trying to say? I don't know. I'm just trying to stall. You've said it already. Why is this what we have to get caught up on? I mean, I know – hold on. Iggy Pop.
Starting point is 00:25:56 No, I know he's a performer in his own right. You're so close. Stardust. Iggy Dard – Stiggy – Iggy Dardust Iggy Dardust wait it's I'm so Stardust
Starting point is 00:26:08 you're so close star something right you're so close yeah you're very close oh wait hold on don't don't we talked about this coincidentally
Starting point is 00:26:20 that's why when you said he did that song literally in my living room about two hours ago I was talking about, oh, there was a band, my friend said, that has an alter ego. And he goes, you know what I mean? I go, yeah, like the Beatles had an alter ego, which I just learned a little while ago. And then like David Bowie.
Starting point is 00:26:37 He's like, oh, yeah, right, exactly. I go, what was David Bowie's? Two hours ago, I was told this. You were told. Maybe I just have to pass. Okay, you're going to pass. Okay. Wait, I didn't know we were allowed to pass. No, I didn't this. You were told it. Maybe I just have to pass. Okay, you're going to pass. Okay. Wait, I didn't know we were allowed to pass.
Starting point is 00:26:47 No, I didn't either. Okay, you've passed. No, hold on. I got it. I got it. You said every part of it. Iggy, Iggy Pop? No.
Starting point is 00:26:56 Stardust? Yes. We'll say that's correct. Okay, Stardust. There's something before it or after it? Yes, before. Before it. Okay, Stardust.
Starting point is 00:27:04 And you've said the first word already. Iggy Stardust. There's something before it or after it? Yes, before. Before it. Okay, Stardust. And you've said the first word already. Iggy Stardust. So close. You said it. Ziggy Stardust. Ziggy Stardust! Very good, very good. Todd Glass, very good.
Starting point is 00:27:15 Wow. So now you think that David Bowie's song Heroes was a cover. I know that it's a cover. You know that it's a cover. So who originally sang it? Jon Bon Jovi. No, it's not a cover so who originally sang it Jon Bon Jovi no it's not fuck
Starting point is 00:27:28 no it is Jon Bon Jovi final answer Jon Bon Jovi final answer Jon Bon Jovi yes yes final answer so in your mind Jon Bon Jovi
Starting point is 00:27:34 who was very his version's pretty good too by the way he was very popular in the 80s yeah he did he did Heroes
Starting point is 00:27:43 he sang Heroes and then sometime after that David Bowie David Bowie did a cover of it. Which is amazing. And which version is the popular one that everyone knows? Well, that I don't know. I'm going to say, I saw Jon Bon Jovi's because a lot of times you like a cover, you go back and watch the original, you like what the person did with it better, the cover. Right, right.
Starting point is 00:28:03 So who were we just talking about? David Bowie. David Bowie is really good. The one I saw. It's live. Should we listen to the original first, the Jon Bon Jovi one? But the one I saw by Jon Bon Jovi, it might not be the one he recorded in a studio. He's got like a whole orchestra with him
Starting point is 00:28:19 and it's pretty cool. So this is the original. This is Jon Bon Jovi singing Heroes. How am I doing so far, Adam? You're doing good. This is called Heroes. Well, he's a little dramatic. Well, it's the title. Oh, I can't wait to hear the other ones.
Starting point is 00:28:39 Wow, I think I could sing. That's something I want to bring up a little later. Now, is John Bon Jovi playing the piano part here? No, he's got an acoustic guitar that he hasn't started strumming. Oh, he just started strumming it. Does he have his shirt on? He's got half a shirt on, yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:00 Very wide open. Can I ask you a question? Oh, I'll ask you after it's over. Is John Bon Jovi respected by other musicians? Yeah. Okay. Sure. I don't know. So this was, let me see if there's a date on this.
Starting point is 00:29:20 Live 2003. And this is the version you were listening to because it's got the string section and all that. So you think after 2003, David Bowie sang Heroes. When did he die? He died three years ago, I believe. So 2003 was, how many years ago was that? That's 15 years ago. So in that 12-year period, that's when David Bowie did the cover.
Starting point is 00:29:42 Well, he had to do it after he did it because it's a cover song. Right. Okay. Is that right? Yes.. Well, he had to do it after he did it because it's a cover song. Right. Okay. Is that right? Yes. There's no way he could do it before, or it'd be the other way around. Right. Right, of course, of course.
Starting point is 00:29:53 Okay, well, I... The other version, I like... Maybe I'm picking, but I like David Bowie's. You like David Bowie's cover of... It's something that's got a primal sort of like... Just like, it's great. I listened to it like 30 times, probably more, on the treadmill in the last month since I heard it for the first time, a month and a half ago.
Starting point is 00:30:11 Okay, well, let's listen to the cover. I hope it's the one live. It's going to play after this Oreo ad. Yeah, that's the word out on the street is these are real ads. I will be hero. I will be hero. I will be hero. I can do that, but... You can sing. Hey, it's going to
Starting point is 00:30:32 be a long show. I got a little bit of motor outside if I can get some of you home. But anyway, shut up, David, and sing the song. That's what he says in the beginning of the one. I wish you could swim. That's not the one I saw. That's not the one I saw. That's not the one you saw?
Starting point is 00:30:46 How do you know? Put David Bowie live, Heroes. You like the live version. I think it's always better live, don't you think? I don't know. They sing a little bit more from the audience's pulse, not just from the studio. So wait, wait, wait, wait.
Starting point is 00:30:59 I got to ask you this. So you don't like listening to songs that are recorded songs you like listening to live songs most of the time I like to record in the in live
Starting point is 00:31:09 better you buy if there's a band you love you go straight for the live album yeah or if I'm mainly because
Starting point is 00:31:16 I never really bought music when I could've you know when it was something you did now I just everything I get on YouTube I always try to search
Starting point is 00:31:22 I put da da da live you search for live and why is that it It just has more... I think they... I don't know. I'm not saying there's not studio versions of songs that could end up being my favorite, but I'm sure there are. Overwhelmingly, because they sing
Starting point is 00:31:36 a little more from their heart. More power. And it's a little bit faster. Yes! How did you know that? I didn't even say it. I think it is a little bit faster. You! How did you know that? I didn't even say it. I think it is a little bit faster. You know why? The energy of the audience.
Starting point is 00:31:48 Yeah. Yeah. And the, yeah. Smile. Smile. Is this the live version? Yeah, this is it. You can drag it in. I think, can you pause it for a second?
Starting point is 00:31:58 I know this isn't what we're here to talk about. Oh, no. No, this is what we're here to talk about. I have a theory in this song. He says, he goes, smile for your daddy to one of the girls in the band. And then he goes, what's it with this daddy shit? I think he said it, thought it sounded a little bit creepy. So then he tried to like go, what's it with all this?
Starting point is 00:32:12 But I don't know. I might be running into it. I still love him. Too bad we can't ask him. Too bad he's gone. Oh, did he? If we were to interview him, that would be my first question. First question out of the gate.
Starting point is 00:32:23 Oh, come to your daddy, baby. Why is there this daddy shit? Sorry, I've been watching. You've been watching too much. What's that, guy? Did you say something? Jacket. The band's really having a laugh, fam.
Starting point is 00:32:39 I've been watching too much television. Forget about it. Television. It's about 20 seconds away. When is this from? Okay, so what's going to happen? This is... It's not quite the time, right?
Starting point is 00:32:48 I bet it's... 2002. Huh. So this is before the original version? That's weird. And then we come back into the lower. That doesn't make any sense. That doesn't make any sense.
Starting point is 00:33:02 Maybe they got the wrong info. This is a year before he died? No, no wrong info. This is a year before he died? No, no, no. This is a year before the original version. I mean, it could be a year before he died. Well, Jon Bon Jovi, if Jon Bon Jovi's version is the original, so there must be a studio version of Jon Bon Jovi's that he did before 2002. Yeah, that's the only way this makes sense.
Starting point is 00:33:24 God, he's really talking a lot. So you like this, though? No, I bypass. I drag it. But not enough to where you've memorized the joke. Yeah, you were talking about the daddy thing.
Starting point is 00:33:36 Well... You like the joke. Not anymore. I dragged it. You listen to that and then you're like, God, this is going on for a while. You drag it.
Starting point is 00:33:42 Then I drag. Here he goes. Crank it up. Can we get some in the headphones? People at home need to hear it loud, too. this is going on for a while. You drag it to the song. Then I drag. Here he goes. Crank it up. Can we get some in the headphones? People at home need to hear it loud too. You can't. This is as loud as it gets. I'll drink all the time.
Starting point is 00:33:57 Oh, he's taking some liberties with the melody that John Bon Jovi's lyrics. Yeah. There's hair. They got a fan blowing his hair. Doesn't get cooler than that. Do you wish you had a fan when you perform?
Starting point is 00:34:12 I do. Yeah. I do. That is a cool thing to have for like a rock star, to have a fan up front. I feel like we should have it during the show. I agree. Anyway, but that's that.
Starting point is 00:34:22 David Bowie. Good shit. But you like this cover version more. You like the cover more than... It's not loud enough. I have a new thing that I do when I'm playing music at my house on the TV.
Starting point is 00:34:31 What do you do? You know, it's hooked up to like a Bose sort of a simple surround sound system. Right. I don't think you can appreciate it unless you're playing it as loud. I don't mean loud where it's annoying loud, but let's say it gets annoying loud.
Starting point is 00:34:44 You just bring it down a little and that's perfect loud. You're not doing it justice if you're not playing as loud as you would play it when you were there at the concert to get the feel. And a lot of times when we're sitting in the living room and we're listening to music, I'll go bring it up. And then we bring it up and everyone goes, oh yeah, now
Starting point is 00:34:59 it consumes the room. I don't want to hear it drip out of that speaker. I want it to fill the room like I was at the concert. But not so much that it's annoying. No, of course not. And you just turn it down if it's... Just a little bit. Just a little bit.
Starting point is 00:35:09 So are you playing... Do you play along with the music on the television? Is that what you're saying? I'll go, you know, look at YouTube clips on television. I guess it's YouTube, basically, but it's on the television. And then when I find a song, I like to put it... Just crank it up. Turn it all the way up.
Starting point is 00:35:23 And then play along with it as it's cranked up he doesn't play he doesn't he hires the drum he said play music as as yes oh no no I meant listen to it
Starting point is 00:35:30 but I do well anyway I don't want to repeat shit I've talked about before well no we I did want to bring this up what am I doing is there a trap
Starting point is 00:35:37 there's no trap I'm doing pretty good so far this is the show you're doing great you're doing great you got the Bon Jovi thing and you're right about that.
Starting point is 00:35:45 So what I did want to talk about is if you listen to the first episode of Stained Glass, and I pray you do, we talked a lot about your parties and your proclivities at parties and what you like to do with music at parties. To recap very briefly, what you like to do when you have a party is you like to – first of all, you have several garages that you like to commandeer. All of your garages are not in use. I feel like I have to interrupt a little. There were probably originally old carriage houses because the house was built in whatever, 1920-something. Sure. And then there's – so it's a duplex. duplex right i own it just don't get any ideas um and then and then so i don't think i was gonna swoop in there and maybe buy it up no no so you go so the two people that rent for
Starting point is 00:36:36 me upstairs i don't give them is there a new person because there was only one you're there is new people the other person was there for like 13 years. Yeah, she was your good friend, right? So she doesn't live there anymore. What happened? Are you falling out? No, no, no, no. She got married and moved away. Was she holding out hope for you and then she read your book? So
Starting point is 00:36:57 there's a four-car garage. Two of it I made into my podcast studio. Right. And then, but I used to have like big dinners out there. Right. So it's like, but I do hire drummers sometimes when I'm having a party. Okay.
Starting point is 00:37:10 Which no one understands do you do it. No, everybody goes, they look at me like I'm crazy, but then you come over the house and you have a drummer and then you're playing music and he plays along with it. It just adds like this crazy, well, it's all about the bass. It's like the song says. Yeah, sure. Well, now you say no one believes you until you- They don't believe me. They don't get it.
Starting point is 00:37:31 Like they go, yeah, the drummer plays along. They don't realize it just, it all becomes one. It all becomes one. This is what I wanted to talk to you about because you were trying to convince us of it and we were having a hard time comprehending it. And you said, well well you know i'm due to have a party uh i'll invite you guys and you'll get it now that was four years ago adam i
Starting point is 00:37:53 mean uh what's your uh scott don't stop you i wish we had a safe word right now apparently you have not had a party i can't you or we have not been invited to your party. And I want to ascertain which of those things is true. Do you really want to lock yourselves into this? I do. Because once we leave here, so because like I'll give you an example. Your podcast is easy for you to invite. It all goes full circle.
Starting point is 00:38:18 Your podcast is easy for you to invite people. And because you have a big podcast and it helps, you know, when I come here, you have fun. But a huge bonus is it helps put people in seats. So you, so it's, if you ask someone to do this, especially if they're a standup, it helps them. My podcast is not as big. So like, you know, I have podcast. I don't like to ask people.
Starting point is 00:38:36 I love the vehicle of podcasts, but I think there has to be a social etiquette. I don't think you should corner people at a party and ask them only through email. That's the only thing I would correct about podcasts. People are inundated with it. Even people that love the formula of it and how good it's been and how many creative things it lets you do. Podcasting is unbelievable. But I don't like to corner people. But when I'm on, last time
Starting point is 00:38:57 you keep going, how come I've never been on your podcast? How come I've never been on your podcast? Then I reach out and I'm not saying it like I'm upset. You're busy. I'm busy and I give you times that I can do it and you never write me back. I don't think that's true at all. Yes, it is very true. I think that's not true at all.
Starting point is 00:39:12 And I think the people believe me. Let me look up our text exchanges. Scott, you have never been on Todd's podcast? I've never, and not for lack of trying. By the way, I will say this so I paint a proper picture. Always responds very on time. And by the way way I'm not complaining he'll say
Starting point is 00:39:25 oh I can't do it one time we had it and you had to cancel which I never mind when people cancel because then they don't feel cornered. Matter of fact
Starting point is 00:39:33 I like when people cancel because I don't get upset and then they know because I do half family shows just no guests so I don't want people to ever feel like they have to do it.
Starting point is 00:39:41 If Thursday rolls around and they're like ah shit you know what I got so much to do I'm like cancel I'd rather do it in five months when you and they're like, ah, shit, you know what? I got so much to do. I'm like, cancel! I'd rather do it in five months when you got a cleaner head. There's nothing worse than having to ask people to do
Starting point is 00:39:50 stuff. Yeah. Okay, here's our last exchange. This is in January. This is you. Are you around in the next few weeks to do the podcast? Pretty flexible with the date. I say, yeah. What time do you do it? You say, around 8 o'clock. Could do the 19th. And then I say, possible. time do you do it? You say around eight o'clock, could do the 19th.
Starting point is 00:40:06 And then I say possible, where do you do it? I would be coming from work because I was working at a job that was, you know, ending around that time. You said basically wherever you are. You say we could also do it the 16th or 17th. I think that's a Saturday or Sunday. I say I'm busy those nights unless you do the afternoon on weekends. You say only at night.
Starting point is 00:40:26 And then I say, cool, it's a little far away from my work, meaning I'm ending a job right around the time. It's a little far from where I was working, but let's try to schedule the 19th. Could you email my assistant the details? Never heard from you again. No, I emailed, and then we had it, and then you had to cancel. Oh, I did? I'm almost positive, yeah. But it wasn't – I'm almost positive. Okay. Because I want you
Starting point is 00:40:48 on. I want to be on. I love you. I want to do your show. Why are we fighting? In a court of law, you have to rule out reasonable doubt. So anybody that doesn't know, because they don't see those texts, I'm saying email me. Okay, this is a metaphor I could really wrap my head around.
Starting point is 00:41:04 Your reasonable doubt is, okay, we don't know. By the way, when I say telling the truth, I know it's not like a big lie. We don't know whose memory is better. But think about it just with what the listening audience knows. You're going to bring a lot of people over to listen to my podcast. And you're fun. Like, I know I'm going to have a good time. Right.
Starting point is 00:41:21 We have a good time together. That's a guarantee. And the bonus is that you're going to bring some new listeners over. Why would it be in my best interest to flake? Because you're a flake? I think that's what's funny about it to Scott. Is that part of what's funny about it? It's funny because you're a flake.
Starting point is 00:41:39 No. Why would I be a flake? No, you don't even mean that. I can tell. I look into your eyes. You, you, look, again, we. No, you don't even mean that. I can tell. I look into your eyes. Look, again, we- Oh, you're done. You're fucked now.
Starting point is 00:41:48 Because I'm going to be on you like whatever that phrase is. I want to do the show. Like shit on a shrimp's back. That shit that's underneath. The line of shit. The brine? The brine. The line of shit.
Starting point is 00:42:00 It's true. There's a lot of shit on the shrimp's back. I hate it when they don't clean that off. No, it's gross. People don't care in Vegas. All the shrimp you can eat. Yeah, they're shitting it. I don't care.
Starting point is 00:42:10 But back to the original thing. We're not talking about your podcast. We're talking about these parties. Yeah. So I will have one and I'm going to invite you and you. You're going to? Are you locked? Are you saying you?
Starting point is 00:42:20 I will go. We will go. We will even. We will make a show at your party. Yes, we'll bring a portable recorder. But my point is, four years ago you said it was going to happen. Because you know what? I don't like to...
Starting point is 00:42:32 Look, you are going. You're going to... Oh, you. So have you had a party with the hired drummers since then? Then why haven't you invited us? Maybe I... I don't know. I saw Adam on TV and I figure he's too famous.
Starting point is 00:42:49 That's a good point. I would go. I would go. Now, wait. Is it the same drummers for every party? No, there's a few of them. There's a few of them. Have you upped your rates?
Starting point is 00:42:59 Because at the time you were saying 100 and you said maybe 150, which really meant 50. We finally got to... Yeah, you're right. You're 150, which really meant 50. Like, we finally got to, you're paying 50. It was 50, now it's 75. So you're paying 50 still. No, no, no, two George Carlin at 75. See what I mean?
Starting point is 00:43:15 So wait, 75 per drummer, and you get two drummers. No, just one. Oh, just one drummer, but he has a rotating group. By the way, I have a small set of drums. Sometimes it's just someone over the house, like a few friends that someone plays drums, and they'll hop on. The thing is, if you pay someone, they'll play a lot more. Well, they don't have to bring their drums, so that's not bad. No, they don't have to bring their drums.
Starting point is 00:43:34 You have a set. Yeah, and I have the sound system around them because they just need to have the music right in their ears so they can play along with it, like a monitor. Those good drummers can find the beat. Can I tell you something? It's amazing. It's amazing. It turns up. Once you see it, can I?
Starting point is 00:43:52 This is a little bit of a long story. That's okay. No, I want to hear it. Do you have video of this at your party? Yeah. There is some on Modern Comedian, a documentary Scott Moran did, and it was about a party at my house. So you're making documentaries and we're not invited. No, this was before.
Starting point is 00:44:05 This was way before that. But I'll make this really quick. So a friend, a comedian, his name is Robbie Kirkoff, and he also, he's a stand-up comedian, but he also DJs on the side to make money, which is a great idea. I said, you should offer a drummer as, you know, like just make it like it's part of your service.
Starting point is 00:44:20 You know, we have a drummer. He sets up with us. So he called me like a month later. He goes, Todd, I did that to a wedding that, you know, these people called me about a wedding. And I said, I have a drummer he sets up with us so he called me like a month later he goes Todd I did that to a wedding that you know these people called me about a wedding and I said I have a drummer I said I'll pay for it so you just you know you don't pay so I said I'll pay for it because I wanted it to happen you want for this person's you paid for someone's drummer to go to someone's wedding it's an interesting story so I did because I didn't want this is your commitment to the drummer bit that's how bad I wanted to prove it so I didn't because I didn't want him to go this is your commitment to the drummer bit that's how bad I wanted to prove it
Starting point is 00:44:45 so I didn't want did you know were you going to the wedding no but I did okay okay okay so so Robbie calls me up I go how did you
Starting point is 00:44:53 I go I was so curious because I didn't think you'd do it he goes you know they were asking me about this I said hey by the way there's this thing we do we have a drummer and he just you know
Starting point is 00:45:00 I play all the music and he just finds the beat and it really adds a it really adds a live element an immediacy. Right. And I didn't want him to have to go, well, it's $200 or whatever it was, and then they would go, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:45:11 So I said, just say it's included. If you want it, we offer it. It's no extra, so you may as well. They took it. So it was in Malibu. So Martin Diller was the drummer that we used. He had to drive up to Malibu, and it was down a long hill. There were tents.
Starting point is 00:45:23 It was a big wedding. Okay. How much were you paying him? Still the 50? No, no. For that, because he had to go to Malibu, I gave him,
Starting point is 00:45:29 I know I gave him $100. Okay. So 75 probably. So we get there and I know where the drums need to be. They need to be on the dance floor. He's wearing a... And you go to help set up everything.
Starting point is 00:45:43 I go because I need to be there. And this is 100% just because you want to prove that this is great. Exactly. Right. Exactly. You don't know the people. Do they know who you are? Well, here we go.
Starting point is 00:45:54 Okay. So I just want to make sure it all goes right. I know it's someone's wedding, so I just stay behind the DJ booth. I don't want to be like- Unobtrusive. Yeah, right. You don't want to be the star of this. No.
Starting point is 00:46:05 So I go there, and then they have a wedding planner who will not let them set... And it's a big wedding. It's like... Right. They will not let this set the drums up in front of the dancer.
Starting point is 00:46:13 He goes, oh, he can't be there. He's like erratic and hysterical. I'm like, son of a bitch. These are code words. Yeah. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:46:19 No, not at all. Not at all. Not at all. Not at all. So... Because I know what you're trying to say. Not at all. Not at all. Not at all. Not at all. So. Because I know what you're trying to say. Oh, you fuck.
Starting point is 00:46:34 Anyway. Okay. So he makes him set up a little bit to the right. Okay. It's not good. Well, anyway, here's where I can condense the story. So about. Oh, here's where.
Starting point is 00:46:45 30 minutes later. Wait, did you step in and say, hi, I'm Todd. No, no, no. I have nothing to do with this. I can condense the story. So about 30 minutes later. Wait, did you step in and say, hi, I'm Todd. No, no, no. I wanted to so bad. I disliked him so much. He's like, yeah, I can't go there. So anyway, but I go. Finally, the groom comes over to me and he goes, you know, he goes, you're Todd, right? You're Todd Gless.
Starting point is 00:47:00 You're a comedian. I can tell you, as Todd was out of my mouth, I go, I'm going to get this thing on my fucking way. So first, I'm like, oh, yeah, he's a friend of mine. And I just wanted to come hang out. So he's a fan or he just knows who you are? I think he's at what level, I don't know. But he's familiar with my work. Oh, God, if he had heard the first episode of this, he would have been like moving heaven and earth to make sure.
Starting point is 00:47:20 By the way, they're out there somewhere. This person and his wife are out there somewhere. So I said, you know what? Did you have to explain why you were there? Why you were even there? Like at the setup for the wedding? So you know I'm being genuine about it. I don't remember specifically why I told him I was there.
Starting point is 00:47:35 But I think- So you lied? Well, because you want to say, oh, I wanted a drummer. It's too much to say. So I think I might have just said, I'm friends with these guys and I had nothing to do tonight. They're like, oh, I'm doing a wedding. If you want to come. And I dressed even nice, because he was dressed nice, so I wasn't a guy just.
Starting point is 00:47:50 So anyway, so he goes, I go, well, we were going to put the drums over there, but the wedding planner wouldn't let us. You know, I was like, real. Just real hysterical. He goes, oh, let's put them there. Next thing I know, there's five groomsmen picking up the drums, putting them over, smack on the dance floor in the corner. Smack on the dance floor. Martin goes, Todd, throw me my sunglasses, which could be cheesy or really cool. And you know what?
Starting point is 00:48:14 It looked cool. So he's in a black suit. He's in a black suit, good-looking guy, good hair, black suit, sunglasses, smack on the dance floor. Then Robbie starts playing music and he starts playing along. And I'm not kidding you. Everything I wanted to have happen, it just needed to be on the dance floor. The energy of those drums couldn't have been 20 feet away from the dance floor. Now he's on there.
Starting point is 00:48:37 Everyone's dancing around him like he's the band. And it's crazy. It's crazy. And I think he does have video of that so that's how i ended up getting it though i know it's so worth it oh my god what did you do at the wedding did you watch the wedding we mean the part where they go do you take this yes the wedding that was up that was i think when i got there already over when i got to where the party part because one part of the house, they had that.
Starting point is 00:49:06 Then down the hill, that was going on. And then the whole wedding party. But you stayed for the entire reception? No, I stayed. He played drums for about, I stayed until they were shutting down. Yeah. Because I couldn't get enough of it. Why is that?
Starting point is 00:49:21 I said, you stayed the entire reception? You said, no, no. I played until the, yeah, I played until the end. Yeah, I stayed until they were shutting down. Well, people still were hanging out, but they stopped playing music, and then I left. But during the party. I stayed behind the DJ booth. You stayed behind it.
Starting point is 00:49:37 I tried to be very. You didn't ever go out and dance? You just watch everyone enjoying it. Oh, I was loving it. I was loving it. But you didn't participate. No, no, no, no. Did anyone ask, who's that guy?
Starting point is 00:49:49 No, because there's a DJ behind there. You know, there's people there. They don't know if you're with the DJ. And the groom was the only person who recognized you? No one else said, why is comedian Todd Glass lurking behind the speakers? Watching everyone really enjoying himself. I was enjoying myself, but angry. This happens.
Starting point is 00:50:09 When I get things my way sometimes, I'm happy, but also like, I fucking knew it would work. So I'm happy, but also angry in a good way. Couldn't you give the idea to your friend, pay for it, which is... Oh, I had to see it.
Starting point is 00:50:21 Okay, so you had to go. I had to see it. And guess what if I wasn't there those drums being 10 12 feet away from that dance floor
Starting point is 00:50:30 it was alright but it wasn't what I knew and I'm there I'm gonna fucking get it the way I want it and they would have said it was okay
Starting point is 00:50:36 it was good but this when he was on the dance floor you can see it right now just this and then this primal beat is coming from the drums
Starting point is 00:50:44 you know what it does? It's almost better than having a cover, a band, a good band, because this is the original artist, obviously. And it sounds great. And it sounds great. And people love them. It's not the live versions. Right. But the other thing I do, sometimes I have a, see, from the podcast, I know a lot of musicians.
Starting point is 00:50:59 So it doesn't really, it's not as weird as it sounds. Right. I also sometimes will send a guy, a few guys that I know that play trumpet, and we'll find three songs. You know a lot of trumpeters. I can attest to that. JJ Kilpatrick. Sure.
Starting point is 00:51:13 All the greats. Gabe Steiner. And then sometimes there'll be three songs, and we'll add trumpet, like an existing song, and then he'll come in with trumpet and play along with it, but mostly just the drums. Did you go over to the bar and grab a drink or anything? Were you allowed to do that? Did you only stay behind the DJ?
Starting point is 00:51:31 Did you get a dinner? No. No. Did you bring food? I think I ate, he got a dinner, and I ate a piece of it or something. Okay, so you got a dinner. That I tried to hide. You got a dinner.
Starting point is 00:51:40 That I tried to hide. Okay, you did get a dinner. Because I didn't want to be, like, eating. I was paranoid once. So what happened is I did go over to get a drink, and that's when the groom recognized me. Oh, okay. And then some of his groom. But sometimes when somebody recognizes you, other people that don't, I hate when they go, like, what do you do?
Starting point is 00:51:56 Like, well, if you don't, you know, I'm not going to give my resume. I did, though. But anyway, that's where I met the groom. And then he was like, hey, and I was super nice. He goes, hey, what brought you here? Of course. And then I said, oh, my friend's a DJ and I had the night off. Do you know the couple's name at all?
Starting point is 00:52:09 No, no. You never, you. I mean, I'm sure I asked the night they were there. Sure, but you could check in on them occasionally. No, but Robbie would. Robbie would. You should, I'd love to get an update from these people next time we do an episode. Text Robbie and find out and we can.
Starting point is 00:52:24 We do have to take a break. Text Robbie Kirkelhoff we can... We do have to take a break. Text Robbie Kirkhope. I'll do it when we take a break. Okay, we're taking it right now. Okay, so, boy, this is incredible. We're going to take a break. When we come back,
Starting point is 00:52:33 we're going to be talking about the music of the band Hariem and we're going to see if Todd can figure out anything about Hariem. We'll be right back with more stained glass
Starting point is 00:52:44 after this. God. Jesus. It's been a while. It's the sound of vinyl. It sounds so familiar. I was doing a parody song. It's the sound of vinyl. Still not. Oh, I'm sorry. That was a parody song. It's the sound of vinyl.
Starting point is 00:53:07 Still not. Oh, I'm sorry. That was the parody again. Let me do the original for you. Okay. It's the sound of vinyl. Oh, right. The Simon and Garfunkel song.
Starting point is 00:53:17 Yes, exactly. Sound of vinyl. We're brought to you today by the sound of vinyl. It is no surprise that vinyl is so beloved by music fans. It sounds incredible. It looks great. It's better than, you know, an MP3, I'll tell you that much. And it is absolutely fun to collect.
Starting point is 00:53:36 There's only one problem, though. There's so much of it out there. It's everywhere. How do you buy all of it? Is that what they're trying to say? No, you can't buy all of it because no one has a house that big. Yeah, there's two. Except like Will Smith.
Starting point is 00:53:48 I guess God does. The universe. Sure. Well, God's house is everywhere. Exactly. So I guess. Oh, so you're right. But this is where the sound of vinyl comes in.
Starting point is 00:53:58 Okay, Adam. And shut up for a second while I tell you about this. Their mission. Their mission. No, shut up is what I'm trying to say. Right. Don't repeat after me. Shut entirely up. Oh, oh, okay.

They have a website where you can shop over 20,000 titles and an amazing recommendation service that you can learn about your taste and offer personalized suggestions of records you'll love. What they do is they text you an offer for an album and if you want to buy
Starting point is 00:54:41 it, all you have to do is just write back, yes. Starting point is 00:56:03 later in the show but to mark this special, we have new stained glass t-shirts available now on PodSwag.com. Head on over to PodSwag.com to get your stained glass t-shirts. It's been a while. It's been a while. Don't miss out, or it could be a while, before you get another chance to buy one of these t-shirts. The episode is so terrific. You're listening to it right now. Yes, you are.
Starting point is 00:56:27 Enjoy. Welcome back. Ari Tuck and Ari Emre Me, Stained Glass 2. We're back with Todd Glass. I'm here with Adam Scott. And I have to say, it's been four years, but more importantly, it's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been four years, but more importantly, it's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while.
Starting point is 00:56:48 It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while. Todd, you, the four years since we did the first episode of this, it's been a whirlwind. It's been a whirlwind. It's been a whirlwind. You were asking me questions about Bono. About, yes.
Starting point is 00:57:06 So what was the show? You talking U2 to me. We started a new show. And how did we get into Bono then? Is he with U2? He's with U2. Okay. He still is with U2.
Starting point is 00:57:14 He used to, but he still is to U2. Right. Mitch Hedberg joke. So, but a lot of people have listened to this and bring it up to you all the time, right? And they played the first one all the time, right? And they played the first one on NPR, right? It is crazy. It's crazy.
Starting point is 00:57:31 It's crazy. They played it on NPR? Yeah, during the Ira Glass show or something. They played like a clip from it. Anyway, so do you want to say anything to the fans, Todd? Can I plug some dates? No. No, no, no. You have to leave early, so we don't have time for that.
Starting point is 00:57:52 We don't have time for any plugs. If it had been an open-ended recording, you could have done all the plugs you want. But at this point, we just don't have time for it. In all fairness, we were going to do 12 that was uh not that was not an adam thing that was it couldn't do it just couldn't do it so unfortunately like all and all the time we've just spent talking about how there's no time like i know we could we could have plugged during that we'll edit that out we'll save time now we don't have time okay the guy that thinks editing it in post will give you
Starting point is 00:58:23 more time in the present. So, okay. Of course, Adam and I have been talking on this show about the band Hariem for many, many months. And now what we want to know is, what does Todd Glass know about Hariem? Tell us everything you know about the band Hariem.
Starting point is 00:58:41 Maybe you should start with the age-old question. When did you first hear of Hariem? Maybe you should start with the age-old question. When did you first hear of Hariem? Well, I knew that this was the show was about. Someone who tipped you off. Someone tipped me off. So I thought, first I thought I knew who they are and I won't be able to play it, like I told you. Did we talk about that on the air or off the air?
Starting point is 00:59:00 Doesn't matter. Both or neither. Hariem, of course I know who Hariem is. I want to ask you, do you think everyone else out there knows everything about him? I don't know. That's what this show is for, is to give people the comprehensive and encyclopedic compendium of all things R.E.M. I'm afraid to say one of the songs that I'm pretty sure they do. Okay, what is that?
Starting point is 00:59:19 That's me in the corner. Is that it? No? That's all I know. What? You don't... I mean, do you know the title of that song? No, but I know that. I hear it in my head, but I guess that's not really helpful.
Starting point is 00:59:33 I'm going to say some titles and you tell me if you think that it's the title. I'm going to guess that they've been around. Been around. They've been around. We've been around. 25 years? Are they still together now, like playing and recording?
Starting point is 00:59:51 Well, if I had to guess with a gun to my head, although I wouldn't want to, I'd say most bands break up. That's a bad situation. That would be horrible. Yeah, why is this guy obsessed? I don't want to guess wrong, so I'm going to pass. You're going to pass. No, but REM is probably not playing anymore. Not playing anymore.
Starting point is 01:00:09 Am I right? It's 25 years, or can you not answer? I'm not going to answer any questions because I just want to hear what you know. That's me in the corner. I'm going to say titles of what that song could be. You let me know when I've said the correct title. Crazy for affection.
Starting point is 01:00:24 The Corner Song. No. I've said the correct title. Crazy for affection. The Corner Song. No. I'm crazy for affection. Well, I don't know those words to be in there. I'm only going to go by process elimination like I watched them on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. So I don't... What were those words you just said? I'm crazy for affection.
Starting point is 01:00:40 Crazy for affection. Yeah. Yeah. You probably said it a little different, but so I'm going to say no. Going to say no. Okay. How does it feel to be in REM? No.
Starting point is 01:00:58 No. Hello. Welcome to the REM song.E.M. song. No. No. You won't even tell me if I'm right. I have a feeling R.E.M. Let me ask you a question.
Starting point is 01:01:13 Yeah. Should I know a lot of their music? Does everybody else in here? I don't know. That's the age-old question. We don't know. We can't be the judge, jury, and executioner of all this. We merely are interested in what you know.
Starting point is 01:01:25 That's all. Just their name. Just their name. Do you know any of the band members' names? No. You got to listen to this show. We go over it all the time. You should start at episode one and just work your way through it.
Starting point is 01:01:38 Which is not what I would say if you're going to watch the Star Wars films. Why did you? No. I would say start with episode four in that case. Why did you pick R.E.M.? I mean, we like them. Right. And grew up with them.
Starting point is 01:01:51 Oh, so I would, look, the bottom line is I probably know if I went to their concert, if they're still performing, I'd know 10 of their songs. Did we settle the name of the song yet?
Starting point is 01:02:03 That's you in the Corner, Spotlight. Is that their song? Spotlight. It's you in the spotlight, claiming my affection. So close. So close. Is it claiming my affection? No.
Starting point is 01:02:19 I mean, it could be. Is it blaming my affection? No. Wait. That's you in the corner. Is it naming my affection? If this was for a lot of money, I'd be shitting in my affection? No. Wait. That's you in the corner. Is it naming my affection? If this was for a lot of money, I'd be shitting in my pants right now. And I am a little anyway.
Starting point is 01:02:31 That's you in the corner. Wait. Hold on. Let me get it out. Let me pretend nobody's in here. Get out of your head and just say you're alone in your house. You've turned on YouTube. You've turned it way up and then you've turned it slightly down.
Starting point is 01:02:47 That's you in the corner. And you've typed in the word live. You're in your element, you're comfortable. That's you. It doesn't look like I'm getting much out. I mean, I'm just repeating the same thing. Wait. That's you in the corner.
Starting point is 01:03:02 In the spotlight. I mean, you know the song. If I went to, like, back when they had stores that sold music, well, I guess they still do. But I would probably, they'd know from that what song I wanted. Right. But that's all I got. That's all you got. That's all you got.
Starting point is 01:03:17 So you got. I think, did you say the name? Could you tell me that? Was one of those names you said it? Is it, okay, let me give you three choices. Is it blaming my affection? Is it naming my affection? Is it blaming my affliction?
Starting point is 01:03:33 I know it's not number three. That's how I graduated high school, by just eliminating the one. Okay. And then also getting really good at copying a little, sir. You know, I'd be like, never mind. Blaming my affection. Blaming My Affection you're right Blaming My Affection
Starting point is 01:03:50 very good not bad what was the song called? that's what it's called what are we just talking about? oh I thought you meant the lyric I thought you meant the lyric no that's
Starting point is 01:03:57 okay I get it I get it I get it I get it all right so do you know anything else about R.E.M.? that's it that's all you got well if you told me one of their songs you know what's weird I got it caught up with R.E.M.? That's it. That's all you got. Well, if you told me one of their songs, you know what's weird?
Starting point is 01:04:06 I got it caught up with R.E.O. Speedwagon. Yes, that's easy to do. Is that wrong? No, that's easy to do. They're always near each other in the record bins. Oh, in case you're in the sunshine. Okay, so it's time to play. I have a bunch of songs.
Starting point is 01:04:23 I have a collection of songs. Several of them are R.E. bunch of songs. I have a collection of songs. Several of them are REM songs. I'm going to play them, and you're going to tell me if they are REM songs or if they are not REM songs. You should put on headphones for this. Okay. I'm going to try this. I'm going to do my best job. Several of these are REM songs.
Starting point is 01:04:38 Several of them are not. And we just want you to be able to pick out, yes, this is REM. Okay. All right? Are you ready? Yes. Adam, are you ready? I am ready. You probably would be pretty good at out, yes, this is REM. Okay. All right? Are you ready? Yes. Adam, are you ready? I am ready.
Starting point is 01:04:46 You probably would be pretty good at this, but I'm going to ask you not to play because we want to hear Todd. All right. So this is the first song. I want you to tell me, is this REM or not REM? So you guys know already, I think. You can wait till the chorus. I wish I could hear another one of their songs together.
Starting point is 01:05:14 I mean, that's you in the corner. That's you in the corner. I'm trying to see if this would be another. Could be their alter ego. Did they have an alter ego? Is this a trick? No, I'm going to say. No. You're going to say... No. You're going to say no.
Starting point is 01:05:50 Okay. Why do you have to say it like that? Then I get nervous. You're saying no. Not nervous. By the way, when I say I'm nervous, I'm not, you know... Right, no. I want to do...
Starting point is 01:05:59 You're like nervous. I like to be right. I like to be right. You're just nervous. You are correct. That is not REM okay good very good
Starting point is 01:06:06 who was that that was I'm not going to tell you who it is but that is not REM I didn't think that is that a great song it didn't catch me
Starting point is 01:06:14 you didn't like that we didn't even get to the chorus I mean I don't like to say music is bad because it's it's not I don't like people shouldn't say but it didn't get me
Starting point is 01:06:22 it doesn't mean it's not a great song here we go I like this one already this is happy this is happy I don't like people shouldn't say, but it didn't get me. It doesn't mean it's not a great song. I like this one already. This is happy. This is happy. This is the type of music I like. Not only, but I could see getting an instrumental version.
Starting point is 01:06:40 I love to go find great songs I like and then look up instrumental version on anything. You can put any song and put trumpets next to it, there'll be a trumpet version next to it Great, I love it Okay, let me hear it Okay, you can wait until the lyrics come in Yeah, this seems like a Mr. Tambourine Mr. Tambourine Man Mr. Tambourine Man.
Starting point is 01:07:10 I mean, keep in mind, I don't know their music that well. I mean, I know who they are, though. Same thing as always. Who doesn't know who R.E.M. is? Right. R.E.M., as you say. Yes. Is this instrumental?
Starting point is 01:07:22 Just the lyrics are coming up. Well, I know this is a... Did they do a cover? Listen. There is no place I'm going to. Well, I know it's not their song, but maybe they're doing it. I don't know. That I don't know. In the jingle, jangle morning. I'll come following you.
Starting point is 01:07:53 Is this a joke? What do you mean? Take me on a trip. Doesn't sound... On your magic... This is a joke, right? I'm not stupid. What do you mean? Well, it doesn't sound like...
Starting point is 01:08:04 Happens tripped. Why does this? I'm not stupid. What do you mean? What do you mean by a joke? Why does this... I know this song. I know, of course. It's the Tambourine Man. By the Beatles. No? All right. Mr. Tambourine Man?
Starting point is 01:08:17 Of course. Who sang that originally? I'm going to... Hold on. This is the original version. This is the original? No, this is not. Ready to go anywhere.
Starting point is 01:08:34 No. I'm ready for the fate. So is this R.E.M. or not? To my own fate. I don't think it's one of their songs. Yes, it's R.E.M. Is it R.E.M.? No, no, no.
Starting point is 01:08:43 You are correct. That is William Shatner. Oh, fuck. How did I... I knew it. I thought you'd say it. And, no, no. Is it our name? No. You are correct. That is William Shatner. Oh, fuck. How did I? I knew it. The minute you say it. And I'm not joking. I thought that was Kevin Pollack doing William Shatner.
Starting point is 01:08:52 That's not a Beatles song, Mr. Tambourine Man? It's a song by the Byrds. Wow. I always thought that was the Beatles. Okay. Are you ready for another one? Uh-huh. Several R.E.M. songs in here.
Starting point is 01:09:05 Let me know, is this R.E.M. or is this not R.E.M.? Here we go. And I didn't light my fire. Wow. Wow. See, I know this song, obviously. I just don't. I do know this. I want to make this very clear.
Starting point is 01:09:34 Yeah. You've heard the song. Of course. This might be one of the R.E.M. songs that you know. It's like a classic. Oh, baby, light my fire. Try to set the night on fire. Oh, yeah. R.E.M. or not R.E.M.? I need your answer right now. I'm going to say... Wow.
Starting point is 01:09:55 Do you know Adam? Adam knows, I'm pretty sure. Because we have a whole podcast about R.E.M. He knows R.E.M. songs. Can I hear a little more? No. No? I need an answer right now.
Starting point is 01:10:09 I think yes. Yes. Definitely. Final answer. Final answer, yes? Yes. Can I change it? No, that was your final answer.
Starting point is 01:10:17 Incorrect. Not REM. Sorry. Can I? Okay, here's another one. Wait, what about that one? That is not REM. Yes. Yes. This is REM. Do you want to wait until the singing or no?
Starting point is 01:10:28 Here we go Yeah God, I thought this would be easier R.E.M. or no? Do you say yes? I don't even know what they were like Do you want to wait until the like chorus yeah R.E.M. that's you in the corner I'm trying to picture them doing that song and then maybe they're writing this it has a little people go it has a little bit of the same sound I picture this
Starting point is 01:11:01 no you're gonna say no now? No You switched it? I did switch it Why, what happened? I don't know I heard the R.E.M. song before And it doesn't sound like that
Starting point is 01:11:13 You don't think it's that Okay, you are correct That is not R.E.M. That is Duran Duran Alright, here we go Okay, I knew it No No. So no, you know that's not a ray of light.
Starting point is 01:11:34 It's Bob Dylan. That's Bob Dylan. Very good. Very good. No. No. That's Bob Dylan. That's what he does. All right.
Starting point is 01:11:46 All right, here we go. Here's our next one. Footloose. Gotta cut loose. Footloose. Put on your dancing shoes This isn't it, is it? It's not foot loose
Starting point is 01:12:07 Oh, okay Same beat Who stole it from who? Oh, wait, this is Wow I thought I heard David Bowie singing a little bit there for a second
Starting point is 01:12:20 but then I didn't Or did I? I try to check you I try to rotate back and forth with you and Scott to see whose eyes are lying. That's why I look at him and then I, I don't know where I turn back and look at Adam to see if he's lying.
Starting point is 01:12:33 So what do you think, REM or no? If I had to, if you're going to give me a time limit You have the time limit. You're the one who has to go. No, I know, I hate that. I'm gonna say Play it a little louder Okay I try
Starting point is 01:12:55 R.E.M. Ladies and gentlemen R.E.M. I don't know I just picture they all come out on stage Oh I love What do you got? Yes No Wow Are you playing songs to trick me? I'm out on stage. Oh, I love it. What do you got? Yes.
Starting point is 01:13:06 No. Wow. Are you playing songs to trick me? No, there are several R.E.M. songs. That was David Bowie. You heard David Bowie because it was David Bowie. What did he do? It seemed like you recognized David Bowie's speaking voice. I did.
Starting point is 01:13:18 Yes, because of that joke that you love. Yeah. That's what I'm saying. All right. Is this R.E.M. or not R.E. funny. All right. Is this REM or not REM? God damn it. This sounds like Men at Work. Young man.
Starting point is 01:13:35 Did you do-de-do-do. I say hoo-hoo. Did you boobie-ba-ba. I said ha-ha. Did you. Oh, I'm right. You're right. This is Men at Work.
Starting point is 01:13:46 Yeah. Let's hear a little bit of it. Yeah. You got it. Come on. This is Men at Work. It's one of their best songs. Picture this with a drummer.
Starting point is 01:14:00 Was this played at the wedding? No, I hire a cop to show up at the house too. Close it down. Part of the night. You're right. That was Men at Work. Goodyear, Goodyear. All right.
Starting point is 01:14:13 I have several R.E.M. songs. Is this R.E.M.? I wish I could think of one person's name. It's a lot of good music. Mm-hmm. It's a lot of good music. Mm-hmm. These are the days. Shining in the sky.
Starting point is 01:14:36 There ain't a cloud in sight. It's not raining. Everybody's in the land. R.E.M. or not R.E.M.? Don't you know it's a beautiful rain R.E.M. or not R.E.M.? Don't you know It's a beautiful new day Hey Yes, because now I'm not even guessing with any authority, to be honest.
Starting point is 01:14:53 But is it R.E.M.? Well, can I tell you how I came to it? Okay. You haven't played one in a while, so I'm thinking maybe you just decided it was time. But do you think it's R.E.M. or do you not think it's R.E.M.? I have no idea.
Starting point is 01:15:03 Don't try to game the system. Is that R.E.M.? Okay, you're right. Yes. That's not R.E. idea. Don't try to game the system. Is that REM? You're right. Yes. That's not REM. I'm sorry to say. Shit. That is ELO.
Starting point is 01:15:10 All right. Is this REM? Is this odd? Oh, no. No, you know this. This is... Do you think it's so... Okay.
Starting point is 01:15:18 Can't fool Todd. Can't fool Todd. All right. Is that it? That is it. No, I have far more. Is that it? That is it. No, I have, I have far more. Uh, is this REM?
Starting point is 01:15:34 Believe it or not. I know it's a theme show, but I'm going to say... REM does the theme to a television show. Is that true? Yes. But why would you be helping me? I'm trying to go about this the wrong way. You're trying to figure out based on...
Starting point is 01:15:58 You keep looking at me and Adam. Is this REM or is this not? It's easy. Is it REM or is it not REM? You're still looking over at Adam. Is it REM or is this not? It's easy. Is it REM or is it not REM? You're still looking over at Adam. Is it REM or not REM? Honestly, did they do a theme? They did. You're not saying it's this.
Starting point is 01:16:13 You're saying they did one. Yes. Okay. Believe it or not. What show is this? Believe it or not, it's me. Greatest American Hero. I mean... I mean, it's just an absolute guess. Yeah, no, no. No, you're right. It's not R.E.M.
Starting point is 01:16:36 All right, now we're going to go into our speed round. Seems a little too bubblegum-y. We're going to go into our speed round, okay? Yeah, seems a little... So I need an answer from you within the first 30 seconds okay I need an answer. No. You are correct.
Starting point is 01:17:07 That's the theme from The White Shadow. Oh, Jesus. Okay. There's nothing at stake here, but I really... There's nothing... I would like to be right. I'd like to... Here we go.
Starting point is 01:17:15 Is this R.E.M.? No. No. What is this? I don't know, but it didn't sound like... It just doesn't sound like... That's me in the corner. Okay, you're right.
Starting point is 01:17:24 That's the theme from Magnum P.I. Alright, is this R.E.M.? Yes! You think this is it? Why? Something about the sticks up front Oh, now I'm having second thoughts Yeah, I can picture them That's me in the corner
Starting point is 01:17:41 Banging the sticks together So this is No, no You say no? Yes You say yes Which? I say no
Starting point is 01:17:49 You say no Why not? It's too messy Too messy Too many sounds They're a little cleaner Alright Am I right?
Starting point is 01:17:56 Is this R.E.M.? God bless America Close Dude, no, no, no You don't think this God bless America. Close. Dude, no, no, no. You don't think this... Wait until the beat kicks in. Well, it's Jesus Christ Superstar. Okay, great.
Starting point is 01:18:12 All right. All right, is this R.E.M.? I know this, obviously. Right. Spam in the place where I live. Ham and pork. I know this, obviously. Right. Yes. Right? Is this R.E.F.? Yes.
Starting point is 01:18:34 I need your final answer. Yes. Yes. Yes plus. You are correct. Shut the fuck up. Am I really? You are.
Starting point is 01:18:42 You got it. Okay, great. You got it. Amazing. All right. Shut the fuck up. Am I really? You are. You got it. Okay, great. You got it. Amazing. All right. So you're doing really well because you're saying no to most of them, but you got one. Is this Aria? No. No?
Starting point is 01:19:14 No. No. Correct. That is the song Unbelievable. Oh, not even close. Unbelievable. Unbelievable. That's EMF, right?
Starting point is 01:19:21 That's EMF, yes. You wait, I'm having it. Boom. You guys are going to regret wanting to come to this party because I'm going to do it now. You're going to have to. That night's going to happen. You're still there.
Starting point is 01:19:29 You know how you never have enough time to do what you want to do? Then in a month or two, you're going to go, oh, Todd, I want a Friday night. It sucks because if Friday night's going to come around, you're going to be like, are you shitting me? I have this to do. Just give us a six-month in advance invite. No, not six.
Starting point is 01:19:42 I'll give you a month. Just to save the date. A month. Is this REM? six months in advance. No, not six. I'll give you a month. Just to save the date. A month.
Starting point is 01:19:43 Is this REM? This could be, and I think... This was the theme of the Caddyshack? Yes. I want to think about this, because... Yes, yes, yes. Correct. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 01:20:07 You're doing good. You are doing really good. You got two of them. I know. I mean, you got a few nose right, but then you got the R.I.M. ones. You're doing good. Yeah. Let me see if I have any left.
Starting point is 01:20:22 They're a bubble. Never mind. They're poppy. Yeah. One last one. They're poppy One last one I like that One last one Walk down the street We get the funniest looks from Everyone we meet
Starting point is 01:20:38 Hey hey we're the monkeys No That helped me out a little Alright you did good. You got several right. We got to go to a break. I hate that we have, look, what time is it? We got time.
Starting point is 01:20:51 We got time for another act. When we come back, we'll have more with Todd Glass, more on stained glass. We got something about stained I want to bring up, and Adam wants to bring up some other stuff. We'll be right back. Hey, we're the Honkies. Wasn't that like a song parody from the 80s? Maybe. All right. We'll be right back. Hey, we're the Honkies. Wasn't that like a song parody from the 80s? Maybe. All right, we'll be right back.
Starting point is 01:21:11 Have you ever seen Weird Al play live? I have, and I saw him play live in 1992. Holy. In Santa Cruz, and it was a great, great show. It's a great, great time. And I've seen him play many times over the years, including one of the shows on the tour that we're about to talk about. You know he puts on an incredible show. It's a great, great time. And I've seen him play many times over the years, including one of the shows on the tour that we're about to talk about. You know he puts on an incredible show.
Starting point is 01:21:30 He just wrapped up his ridiculously self-indulgent ill-advised vanity tour where for the very first time he played simply his original songs. That's cool. Yeah, he does about four covers or parody songs on the record, and then he does the rest are original. He only played original songs. It was great to see songs like Dare to Be Stupid or Buy Me a Condo or Jackson Park Express, all those songs.
Starting point is 01:21:56 Star Wars song he probably played. He actually weirdly did play that Star Wars song as the encore, but that's not an original. I don't know if you know that. The bye-bye, this here Anakin guy oh it's it's american pie yeah i totally forgot that it's actually to the tune of american pie oh that's so stupid what if he did a parody of of the movie american pie and did a star wars version of that with with just like princess leia fucking a pie or something get working on that right let's you and I need to write a script.
Starting point is 01:22:26 Can't wait. There were 77 performances on the tour. Every show was unique. He did a different set list for every single show. And then he professionally mixed and mastered them. It all includes Al's impromptu stage manner. And what he did was he put them all up on Stitcher Premium, every single show. Oh, that's awesome.
Starting point is 01:22:44 Every single one uh listen to weird al yankvick's ridiculously self-indulgent ill-advised vanity tour now on stitcher premium for a free month of stitcher premium go to stitcher premium dot com slash weird al or stitcher premium dot com slash freedom whichever one you feel like you want to go to uh and use the promo code weird al or freedom whichever one you feel like you want to go to, and use the promo code WeirdAl or Threedom, whichever one you feel like you want to put in. I mean, Threedom's my show, and I would get the money. I feel like you might be plugging another show. I mean, I would get the money if you put in Threedom, and if you went to StitcherPremium.com
Starting point is 01:23:15 slash Threedom, I think I would prefer you do that. But if you want to give the money to Al, I mean, he doesn't need it. I mean, the ad we're currently reading is Weird Al, but... But he doesn't need the money, and I could use some, you know? I think we can speak for him. You know, I have a bunion operation that I'm going to get in, you know, about a week, and I, you know... Well, maybe he needs to make his swimming pool bigger. That's far more important than the bunion.
Starting point is 01:23:39 Well, he's going to dig a hole next to his swimming pool. And then connect them, and then it's a much bigger swimming pool. Via tube? Yeah. Okay, all right. Well, whichever you want to go to, go to stitcherpremium.com slash weirdal or threedom and use the promo code weirdal or threedom. I love that we have these shows.
Starting point is 01:23:56 Go listen to them. They're a great time. Welcome back. Stained Glass 2. We're here with Todd Glass. I'm here with Adam Scott, of course. And, I mean... I'm just recovering from that last act.
Starting point is 01:24:11 That was incredible. Todd did really well. Incredibly well. He did really well. Better than the last act. It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while.
Starting point is 01:24:19 It's been a while. It's been a while. It's been a while. Excuse me, you know where it's been a while? It's been a while. It's right next to Clem's. You know where Rancho Cucamonga is? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:24:28 Well, right next to there, it's called Benoit. Benoit. Benoit. It also sounds like it could be the Bears. Those guys. The Bears. Benoit. All right, we can't do an episode of Stained Glass without covering recent stained news.
Starting point is 01:24:43 Yeah. And I noticed this. Does Stained Glass still perform? Or no, they're not a band. They're not together anymore. I noticed this
Starting point is 01:24:51 in April, April 17th of this year. This was on Stereogum. Stained Glass frontman blasts bougie motherfucker
Starting point is 01:24:59 from Limp Bizkit. Okay, so apparently... Gotta hear about this. Apparently, the lead singer of Stained Glass, his name is Aaron Lewis. Oh yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:25:09 He has been recording as a country singer lately. No. He's moved over into country like Hootie and the Blowfish did. He, apparently the guitarist of Limp Bizkit.
Starting point is 01:25:22 Now, if you remember last time when we were talking about Stained, we talked about how Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit. Now, if you remember last time when we were talking about Stained, we talked about how Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit jump-started Stained's career by directing their videos and putting them on the Family Values Tour. So they are very closely connected.
Starting point is 01:25:38 But Wes Borland, the guitarist of Limp Bizkit, apparently saw Aaron Lewis in the airport. And he was visiting his parents in Jacksonville, flying back to L.A. He runs into Aaron Lewis from Stained. And here's the quote. He says, I just happened to run into him and hadn't seen him in a while. Wow.
Starting point is 01:26:05 With no self-awareness. Wait, who is this talking? Aaron Lewis or Wes Borland? I just happened to run into him and hadn't seen him in a while. Wow. With no self-awareness. Wait, who is this talking? Aaron Lewis or Wes Borland? This is Wes Borland. Okay. Hadn't seen him in a while. Didn't Wes Borland quit this buddy's back? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:26:15 So they're abandoned again? Well, they're not doing anything, but he came back. So he has no self-awareness that he's saying he hasn't seen him in a while. Get your mouth as puffy as you can and then say, I don't know what that did. Nothing. Nothing. So Aaron Lewis of Stain says to the Limp Bizkit guitarist,
Starting point is 01:26:35 hey, where are you going? And he says, I'm going home. And Aaron Lewis says, home? He says, yeah, I was just visiting my parents and I'm going back to L.A. And he says, for the record, I've lived in L.A. longer than I've lived in any other city in my life. And Aaron looks at me, and he kind of turns his chin up, and he goes, nah, man, remember where you came from. Florida is your home, not L.A.
Starting point is 01:26:57 That's home. And I just went, fuck you, man, and I never talked to him again after that. Good, good. Okay. Relax is what I would have said. Can we break this down a little bit? Do you want to hear Aaron Lewis's rebuttal? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:27:10 Oh, yeah. Aaron Lewis, Westmoreland continues on of like how he's a disgusting person, so full of himself, a dickhead, just based on this encounter. Jeez. Disgusting person. No thanks. Peace. I don't want to be a shit talker, but I have no problem talking shit about that guy. He's terrible person. No thanks. Peace. I don't want to shit talker. I don't want to be a
Starting point is 01:27:25 shit talker, but I have no problem talking shit about that guy. He's terrible. Oh God. Based on this encounter. Okay. So Aaron Lewis from Stain, Stain Glass, uh, from the stage in Las Vegas tells his side of the story. He says about this airport, about this airport encounter, West Borland, who I love dearly, who obviously has some fucking things to say about me fuck that motherfucker i know i started this with i love him dearly because he's part of the whole reason i'm standing here right now in front of you and i find it really fucked up that okay this is what happened okay this is how it happened this is exactly how it happened and i don't know how the fuck he came up with what he came up with but i'm gonna tell you what happened i saw this motherfucking bougie motherfucker riding on a fucking golf cart in the airport to his gate i ended up at a gate
Starting point is 01:28:10 really close to him i went up to him i said wes what's up brother i miss you i haven't seen you in forever how have you been good this that and the other thing i'm like where are you headed he's like i'm headed home to los angeles and i'm, motherfucker, that ain't home. Remember, you're from Jacksonville fucking Florida. That's how it went down. I don't, that's not vastly different. They're not, there's no divergences.
Starting point is 01:28:32 Maybe an added detail of the golf cart. But it doesn't, in itself, it doesn't have to be a bad thing. He's just saying, you know,
Starting point is 01:28:38 remember, Florida's your home. So what did Wes, like when he said that to him, did they just part ways like that was the or was he like what are you talking about that was it that and and so he says west borland you bougie motherfucker i give all the credit in this next song to fred not you fuck you and what was the next song the next song is one of his own songs but he's like you know the one that fred
Starting point is 01:29:01 gave him his break to so that's i, I mean, that's prime stained news that just this article is enough reason to get back together as far as I'm concerned to do a stained glass. Oh, yeah, major beef in the stained glass world. Oh, those two used to play together? Thank you, Todd, yeah. Well, it's hard if you don't know them.
Starting point is 01:29:18 Well, yeah, exactly. I would expect you to keep up on all things stained. I say, I know it's been a while. It's been a while. That's stuck in my head, etched in my head like a thing that would get etched somewhere. All right, Adam. There was a time when those two guys were tight as shit. Tight.
Starting point is 01:29:36 Like bros. Like full brothers. Full on brothers. Actually, Aaron, if I'm not mistaken, we could go back and take a look. It looks like, as far as I remember, Aaron Lewis said when he first saw Wes Borland, he said, what's up, brother? What's up, brother? He said, what's up, brother? How's it going?
Starting point is 01:29:53 Like, I love you. That proves that they're brothers. Yeah, exactly. And he says, I love him dearly. I love him dearly. And then he turns his back on him by saying, yeah, I don't know who to, first of all, I don't know who to believe and I don't know who to side with. You know who I believe? For some reason, the guy.
Starting point is 01:30:06 I think they're both telling the truth because they're both telling the exact same story. Well, but maybe the other one thinks he retold it because tone is everything. And maybe he just goes, yeah, it was like, yeah, Jacksonville's your home. If you ever tell a story about a conversation, like say that we had a conversation, I'd be like, boy, I tell you, Todd came up to me. He was like, hey, man, why do you want to do this, this, this? You know, it automatically, the tone of voice and the impression I'm doing of you makes you the bad guy. It's everything. So I was like, so Todd came over to me. He's like, Hey man, how are you? You know? Right. So you could be repeating the same thing, but changing the tone and people go, well, that's
Starting point is 01:30:38 what he said. You said like we all just did, but maybe it's the tone. Why would he be, even when he's angry at him on stage, he still says he loves him. He loves him. Yeah, I don't know. A lot of complicated feelings. I'm going to say one thing here. I'm going to side slightly with Wes Borland. Or, you know what?
Starting point is 01:30:52 I'm going to 100% side with Wes Borland. Okay. Just because if I was in the airport and I ran into an old friend and I said, oh, I'm just, I'm headed home, and they came at me with, Right. Hey man, Santa Cruz is your home. You can't, you can't say that. I would, no, I wouldn't care, but I would, inside I would be like, I'm just kind of a fucking asshole.
Starting point is 01:31:13 But let me do the opposite. I saw a guy in the Virgin Megastore once when I was shopping, I was just looking for records and I hadn't seen him in six, seven years. Oh man, yeah. We went to acting school together. And I said, hey, so, and he's from LA.
Starting point is 01:31:29 Yeah. And I said, oh my gosh, you're here. Where have you been? And he's like, oh yeah, I'm just here for a week and then I'm going home. And I was like, home? He's like, yeah, Prague. And I'm like, you're from LA.
Starting point is 01:31:42 You're from downtown LA. So I don't know. So I have the, but I didn't say. How long had he lived in Prague? Like three months. But that's the thing is Prague is, it's kind of pretentious. It's pretentious.
Starting point is 01:31:53 That's what I mean. Yeah. But that's what Aaron Lewis is saying is like, oh, home, the plastic LA. Yeah, exactly. Is he also from Jacksonville? Is that part of the problem? I believe that's part of the problem.
Starting point is 01:32:04 Maybe he thought he was minimalizing him like oh you're from Florida minimalize minimalize Aaron Lewis probably lives in Los Angeles or wherever he lives
Starting point is 01:32:11 if he's on his way back to wherever he resides that's not Jacksonville does he say I'm headed to my temporary home so yeah cause I call them both home now
Starting point is 01:32:24 the place where I currently reside when I'm in Philadelphia I say I'm heading home and when I'm in California I have two homes now home. Yeah, because I call them both home now. When I'm in Philadelphia, I say I'm heading home. And when I'm in California, I have two homes now. Yeah, you're not a psychopath. I mean, you are kind of a psychopath. Alright, did you have stuff we got to cover briefly? Do we have time, too? I don't know. We only have like
Starting point is 01:32:38 five minutes. Yeah, no, we'll do it next time. We'll do it next time. Alright. So, Todd, I want to give you the opportunity, since we're going to push this other feature we were going to do Todd, I want to give you the opportunity, since we're going to push this other feature we were going to do, I'm going to give you the opportunity to do some of your plugs that you said that you had. Well, my Netflix special
Starting point is 01:32:54 is on Netflix. We covered that already. We don't need to bring it up. When's this drop? It's very soon. Oh, well, I'm going to be in this Wednesday, I'm somewhere. Well, no, of course not. We're talking tomorrow? Yeah, I don't know. Where are you tomorrow? Thursday. Thursday, I'm going. Well, no, of course not. We're talking tomorrow? Yeah, I don't know. Where are you tomorrow?
Starting point is 01:33:07 Thursday. Thursday I'm going to what doesn't matter. No, but I want to know what you're saying. I'm going to Minneapolis. But then after that, I'm going to New York for, I'm going to, that doesn't matter either.
Starting point is 01:33:17 I guess the next thing after this, oh, the Stir Crazy Comedy Club in Arizona. And then Huntington Beach, July 14th at The Rec Room. Oh, that's fun. The new comedy club, which I heard is crazy cool. That to me is home. Huntington Beach, right? And then the Stir Crazy in Arizona in August.
Starting point is 01:33:37 August, I'm going to Arizona. So they're the only two dates that I know. I just go from air conditioning to air conditioning. Here's what I want you to plug right now. Stir crazy. I want you to plug your friend's wedding DJ business. Oh, I don't even know if Robbie does it anymore. He's still a comedian.
Starting point is 01:33:53 What I want you to do is I want, there are a lot of fans of this show who are going to want to hire you to come to their weddings and set up their drums. And then lurk. And then lurk. And I'm not saying like Todd has to pay for it. Todd has to pay for the drums. Like we've established this is a real thing now. We've established that this works. It enhances the experience.
Starting point is 01:34:14 It enhances the experience. We know that now. Right. So what I want you to do is like how can people contact you and what are the rates for you to do this? I don't. Because I believe this to be a legitimate business opportunity. Well, yeah, but you know what?
Starting point is 01:34:29 It's still, people are still confused. They're like, do they have to have every song? No. Look, if you wanted to send a drummer that was playing for you, even a party, maybe some of the songs you're playing, yeah, he'd listen to them, but he doesn't need to. Because if he pulls back on drums
Starting point is 01:34:44 or if the song starts playing loud and it takes him, seconds to find the beat in it, the song's still playing. It's not like he's looking for it and there's dead silence. So they don't really need to do anything but show up and have speakers right behind them. They need to have a monitor or whatever the source of music is coming right at them. They need to be a competent drummer at the very least. Yeah, to do it like that, I'd say on a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being like a drummer that would be in a band that we all know, a super famous band.
Starting point is 01:35:15 A band that we all know. Yeah, like, it's been a while. You'd have to be like, I think, at least a 7. Did you see the viral video recently of the little girl playing along with Misty Mountainhop? Oh, yeah. Like a little eight-year-old Asian girl. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:35:30 I merely say that because I sent it to Kulop and she was very inspired by it. But yeah, she's great. It's amazing. She's an amazing drummer. It's not Misty Mountainhop. No. Which DeSackele song is it? Oh, I don't even know.
Starting point is 01:35:43 If you go on YouTube, there's people that play drums along with songs. How would I look for that? Would I put in the word live? I don't know, but you can put in... What's that song? Ooh, ah, walla walla, bing bang, bing bang, walla walla, bing bang. Ooh, ah, ooh, ah, ah. If you put that, plays along with live drums to that song,
Starting point is 01:36:01 there's like a kid, he looks like he's 15, and he kicks ass just sitting in his house playing drums on that. A good drummer can find beats in between beats in between beats. I don't know what you mean by that. You know what I mean? Go look at Elvis, old Elvis, when he's playing suspicious. Meaning he's older or this is early on?
Starting point is 01:36:20 Early Elvis, where he's doing Suspicious Minds, and his drummer, I mean, it is primal. You are so passionate about the five YouTube videos you've seen. And I'm supposed to go look them all up somehow? Well, I'll send them to you at my next party. Okay. Oh, this is going to happen.
Starting point is 01:36:38 I also want to bring up, we have, this is exciting, guys, and I don't think you know this, Adam. We have stained glass t-shirts are now available in the shop, and it's got the three of our faces on it. Yes. Wow, that's amazing. They're distressed. They look like a concert tee. Can I see?
Starting point is 01:36:55 Yes. It's the three of us, and we did the – That's great. These are really good. They're in the store now. You can buy stained glass T-shirts. It's the three of us, and it says, it's been a while.
Starting point is 01:37:10 It's been a while! And is the T-shirt itself distressed, or is it only... Well, the T-shirt... Well, no, the design on it looks distressed like an old concert tee. You can buy those in the store now. And guys, I got a... You know, I'm doing a full rev split with you guys.
Starting point is 01:37:25 So enjoy that. We're cutting Todd in on this. Cutting Todd in for one third. Go head on over to podswag.com slash REM maybe. Or just podswag.com. You can get those. And that is going to do it for us. Todd, I want to thank you so much.
Starting point is 01:37:43 Next time we'll see each other. We'll be at a party. We'll keep it small. I'm going to even let you guys, we'll pick like 12, 13 people. That's it. We want to be at a real party. And I don't want to know anyone else. I want to see what you see at your parties. Oh, God.
Starting point is 01:37:58 Now I'm okay. We don't have to coordinate on this list. That's a good list. It flies on the wall like you at a wedding. I just want to lurk. I want to ask for one drink, and I want to be noticed by you. And run into someone while I'm getting a drink.
Starting point is 01:38:11 I think it would be funny. All right, bye. All right, we're going to see you next time. This is Men at Work, and until then, we are going to hope that you... This is REM, right? No, this is Men at Work. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 01:38:21 We are going to hope that you have found what you're looking for. Bye. Been a while. Been a while. Hey, Queeros. It's me, Cami Esposito, and I'm here to tell you about my podcast, Queery. You can sit in on hour-long conversations between me, Cameron Esposito, and some of the brightest luminaries in the LGBTQ family.
Starting point is 01:38:48 Query explores individual stories of identity, personality, and the shifting cultural matrix around gender, sexuality, and civil rights. Plus, it is fun. We have had some incredible guests. Emmy winner Lena Waithe? Yes, definitely. Congressman Mark Takano? You bet. L Word creator Eileen Shakin? Yes.
Starting point is 01:39:06 President and CEO of GLAAD, Sarah Kate Ellis? We definitely have. We've got celebs. People like Trixie Mattel, Evan Rachel Wood, Tegan and Sarah, the band, and the people, separately, on two different episodes. We also have activists and changemakers in our community.
Starting point is 01:39:27 I think it's a one-of-a-kind show full of chats you have never heard before. It's identity, it's community, it's query. You can find Query every Monday on Stitcher, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.
