Starting point is 00:00:00 🎵 From Aeroplane To the Zephyr Song This Is Are you talking RHCP Re me
Starting point is 00:00:41 The comprehensive And encyclopedia Compendium Of all Things Red Hot Chili Peppers. This is good rock and roll music. Welcome back. Welcome back. And my name is Scott Aukerman. I'm the co-host with the co-most.
Starting point is 00:01:01 And to my, well, he's not, he's actually at my 12. Instead of being to my right or to my left, he is directly in front of me staring down the barrel. You know him as Ben Vereen on Parks and Rec and he's on a new show that you have to be rich to watch. Please welcome Adam Scott. Hey-o! Hey!
Starting point is 00:01:46 Ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya- It fits like a glove. Like OJ's glove. Just like OJ Simpson's glove. In the sense of it didn't fit. It being just a little tight. Yeah, and so we must- And I'm kind of theatrically showing off that it doesn't fit. Like, huh? How do you even put something like this on? That's how this show fits us. This is, of course, Are You Talking RHCP ReMe? A podcast about the red hot chili peppers
Starting point is 00:02:06 that Adam and I have been doing for, I mean, we've been at this for a few years at this point. Three years straight, probably. I think it's about two at this point. Two years. Two years. Which is God's three. Yes, exactly.
Starting point is 00:02:21 And the bakers regret. And comprehensive, of course, there is no more podcast. More comprehensive. No. There's no more podcast. I would love to hear those words at some point. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:02:33 There's no more podcast. No, there's always more podcast. Our minds would be so free. Wouldn't they? What do you think is taking up all of your mind space these days? Podcasts. Podcasts, podcasts, podcasts. Podcasts, podcasts, podcasts, podcasts, and more podcasts.
Starting point is 00:02:52 There needs to be a place we can put all these podcasts. No, seriously, where do we put them? Where do we put them all? Do we all have a sack of podcasts? I guess so. No. If we did, that's where we would put them. A pickled peck, perhaps? I guess so. No. If we did, that's where we would put them. A pickled peck, perhaps?
Starting point is 00:03:08 Yeah, no. No. No, we don't have that. A pickled peck of podcasts? I wish. No, I wish I had a pickled peck. Oh my God. I wish I had a pickled peck of podcasts.
Starting point is 00:03:15 Oh, I wish I had a pickled peck. But unfortunately, they're just laying around out here. Yeah. Adam, it's great to see you. I think the last episode we did did did we do it over zoom i can't recall or were we in this dude i believe we've we did an entire season of red hot chili peppers over zoom did we not we sure did we sure did and uh uh talk uh what's the name of that other
Starting point is 00:03:43 i don't remember. I just remember the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which is where we're at today. All on Zoom. All over Zoom. All on Zoom. Staring at you in a little tiny rectangular screen. Yeah. Instead of the widescreen view I have right now.
Starting point is 00:03:56 Man, now it's letterboxed and I love it. Live your life letterboxed. Remember letterboxed? Like the VHS is like, well, is it letterboxed though? And you get the letterboxed like the vhs is like well is it letterboxd though and you get the letterboxd version yeah of course yeah because i was a snob much wait a minute is this i love films i think it is hey everyone welcome to i love films this is Scott. And this is Scott. And we, gosh, this is the show where we talk about great, great film.
Starting point is 00:04:30 Not, listen, not that I don't appreciate a good popcorn flick. More than that, I appreciate just popcorn. Oh, I love popcorn. Oh my God. There's nothing better than when you put a sack of that microwave popcorn in that little box called the microwave. Oh baby.
Starting point is 00:04:50 And you just smell that buttery salt flavor. You know what? You know what? Sorry to interrupt, but for me, it's the sound. Oh yeah. You hear the corn starting to pop. It's like, oh baby, here it comes. Popping sound sort of, in a way.
Starting point is 00:05:04 It's as if something were were popping yeah a lot like that and it's just like and then it gets faster and faster you're like oh yeah here it comes and we're like and then suddenly you hear that ding which means the microwave making a sound microwave is making a sound at you and you're like how do i interpret this sound what do i you get out the owner's manual. That's right. Which is in the garage, so you have to go outside. Unfortunately, there's no easy access to the garage,
Starting point is 00:05:33 so you have to go around your front yard. And there's a combination lock. Combination lock on it. You have to remember the combination, which is not easy. 69, 69, 69. Oh, my God. And then you get inside that garage and you pull out that owner's manual. Which is just beautiful. Put your feet up and relax. Put on the reading glasses because you have an afternoon's worth of entertainment for you. Because to find out what that sound means, you have to read the whole thing cover to cover which listen i'm not
Starting point is 00:06:06 complaining this is no beautifully written manual it's so gorgeous and what you know what's funny is it's always the last thing you read in that because it's like murphy's law it's the first thing actually in the manual but you put it down right after you read it that's right because that there there is a little thing. It's page one. It's like, hey, by the way, dumb shit. Yeah. If you don't know what the ding is, it means your food is done. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:31 So you put it down immediately because it's the last thing you read. That's actually the title of the owner's manual. Yeah. And then you go, by then you've forgotten, you know, of course, what you're doing. And so you take the kids out for a swim. And then. At the public out for a swim. Mm-hmm. And then... At the public pool. The public pool.
Starting point is 00:06:48 And then you pull the Studebaker back in the garage. That's right. Padlock it all up. That's right. Go back upstairs. 696969. Of course, go back upstairs and you know what's waiting for you. Oh, baby.
Starting point is 00:07:00 A big old bowl of popped corn. It's cold now. It's ice cold. Because we put it in the freezer before we left for the corn. It's cold now. It's ice cold. Because we put it in the freezer before we left for the pool. That's right. We remembered to do that at least. Oh, yeah. And there is nothing better than frozen popcorn.
Starting point is 00:07:15 Frozen corn. Frozen popcorn. Even harder. And I love the little unpopped ones down at the bottom because now they're even harder and they break your teeth when those are harder and the kind of film of frozen butter on yeah oil on all of the popcorn yum get in my tum tum delicious all right well that's been all for i love films we'll see you next time bye good up yeah that was really good they seem to talk more about food yeah i mean i i enjoyed that podcast primarily for when they for their their discussions on on
Starting point is 00:08:02 movies on films that's usually why I tend to listen to it. Yeah. Yeah. But, you know, that was still excellent. I mean, they can make anything sound interesting. Mm-hmm. Would have loved for them to talk more about films, though. Me too.
Starting point is 00:08:17 It was really disappointing, actually. Yeah. It was actually, I know you were saying it was really good. It was actually not good. I hated it. Yeah, I not good. I hated it. Yeah, I hate them. I hate them profusely. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:30 Fuck those guys. Fuck those guys, yeah. To hell and back. To hell and then back to earth. To hell forever. Fuck you. Yes. Well, speaking of fuck you and to hell forever Welcome back to the show
Starting point is 00:08:45 Yeah You know, we thought we were done with the show Because we hit it pretty hard there for the past couple years We did a few eps covering the entirety of RHCP's career That's right We hit it all We talked about that first record we talked about sex rap california cal we we certainly mentioned california and then i yeah we kind of like
Starting point is 00:09:17 uh sort of fast forwarded through a little bit of their history but we ended up on uh the album called gosh what is it called the the the miseducation of lauren hill is the only thing coming to mind what is their last record called their last record was called the the getaway the getaway now if i'm not mistaken and please tell me if i am okay at what point do you want me to interject every word no at the second you you know for a fact that i am indeed mistaken is this family fuel uh family fuel rules family fuel rules okay these are the rules of the family so when you when you get the family together in the station wagon you go down to the you you know, the fuel station. The Shell. Sure.
Starting point is 00:10:08 Chevron, what have you. Arco. Mobile. AM, PM gas. Sorry, you already said mobile. Yeah. What else?
Starting point is 00:10:15 What else? Arco? I said Arco. God damn it. Fuck. Johnny's gas. Johnny's gas. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:10:23 Sure. When you go to one of those, this is FAMU, FAM, is it so hard to say i don't know family feud but the rules of that where the second i interject i don't get a second chance right like that's exactly right okay that's exactly right go ahead um what were we talking about their last album the getaway and you said oh you might be wrong if i'm not mistaken yeah and please correct me if i am okay the reason buzz what what's you're mistaken what happened what was that you're mistaken i don't know i'm just that's my guess okay all right forget it i don't get to buzz in Yeah, and my story is over because it was mistaken.
Starting point is 00:11:07 No, but if I'm not mistaken, and please correct me if I am, the whole reason we began the podcast was because we both saw the news item that John Frusciante was rejoining the band. And we thought we would do a quick seize about Red Hot Chili Peppers leading up to this new record. And we did that. Yes. And it was very quick, as a matter of fact.
Starting point is 00:11:34 And this new record came out. Yeah. And so we thought we would, you know, talk about it. Now, I remember it was the summer of 2020 and we were doing the podcast over Zoom and there were like, I don't know where we were hearing about it, but weren't there rumors of them like rehearsing outside?
Starting point is 00:11:58 And if you go to the right canyon in LA, you can hear them playing or something? Yeah, something like that. And then I told you about how they were playing down the street from my place when that must be no but i thought there was there was there was a thing where like where people were were hearing them from across a canyon uh at their at this house that they had up in laurel Canyon or something. And they were like, yes, it sounds amazing. Yeah, because the four of them are back together.
Starting point is 00:12:31 And you heard them because they were playing a party. They played a party up the hill a little bit. And I heard their sound check the day before. And it was just like one Red Hot Chili Pepper song with like the drums turning up really loud and then down. And I'm like, some guy on a stereo is like testing it. He loves the Red Hot Chili Pepper. red hot chili pepper song with like the drums turning up really loud and then down and then the bass and i'm like some guy on a stereo is like testing it he loves the red hot chili peppers and he's turning the bass up and down and stuff may have been todd glass yes and then uh suddenly the next night uh it became the full band performance all night and i was trying to
Starting point is 00:13:02 watch a movie i'm like could the red hot chili peppers turn it down a little and could you tell it was john frusciante uh i could you could tell it was them because yeah because it still sounded a little far away but it was you know just like someone it was basically like someone turned up red hot chili peppers greatest hits and was playing it at their house down the street which you didn't need when you were trying to watch i don't know yeah when i was trying to watch uh uh my old pal slimer uh give uh bill murray a hard time again oh god oh boy onion head of course yeah um but and then i got confirmation brooks wheelan comedian brooks wheelan was at that party oh okay and posted video of it so why weren't we invited to the party? I know.
Starting point is 00:13:47 We do this podcast about them, this loving podcast, but they must know about this show. 100%. It's interesting because this is the comprehensive and encyclopedic compendium of all things our HCP, and yet we don't know about this Canyon story. We can barely remember it. But I remember reading something about it me too on twitter maybe i feel like the album rollout uh the extended rollout due to covid the novel coronavirus aka yes uh has uh impacted uh all of these stories because
Starting point is 00:14:19 these were stories that you had read about two years ago when they thought the album was coming out in like a month. No, they actually had just, he had just rejoined when all that was happening. Don't disagree with me. Sorry. Really? I apologize. Not on my birthday.
Starting point is 00:14:36 You know, happy birthday. Is it your birthday? Yes. You didn't know that? That's why we're doing this show. No, it's not. This was the gift I asked for. Happy birthday.
Starting point is 00:14:45 Oh, yeah. You won this at an auction. there was a big severance auction that's right spend a day with adam scott that's right and i bid eighty thousand dollars and what are we doing after this nothing i'm i'm busy okay sorry do you want that eighty thousand dollars right now by the way yes okay what do you it's not for charity do Do you take crypto? Only crypto. F? Which kind of crypto is it? Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:08 Yeah. That's the only one. Okay. Great. Yeah. Just pay me with a nod because now you can nod and I receive.
Starting point is 00:15:15 You have I nod? I have I nod. Oh, great. Okay. Here you go. Ready? Yep. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:15:22 My neck is so creaky. That was tough. Well, I'm so glad that you're here on my birthday um it only was took eighty thousand dollars in crypto uh to get you here but i'm really glad because um this is uh such an exciting exciting time uh to be doing a podcast about red hot chili peppers uh three weeks after their album came out we're nothing if not timely but adam actually it's yeah it's like six weeks it came out april one yeah you're right adam before we get to that uh tell me about your life uh tell me about your loves tell me about your life. Tell me about your loves. Tell me about everything rattling around in the nog.
Starting point is 00:16:18 You are, of course, the star or the ersatz star of the show Severance. Are you number one on the call sheet? Or is Ben Stiller, even though he's just directing, he's like, look, I'm look i'm used to this listen adam he pulled me aside one day um yeah we're it's uh did what was your question i don't know but say whatever you want to say because i i consent you're going into pr mode no so go ahead go ahead and slip into it's very comfortable for you it's like a nice uh sarong uh get into pr mode because you you've been doing a lot of pr right yeah and uh i guess what what i was gonna say is i just love i love the show and i love playing marky post which is the character is that marky post is the character interesting and um it's been or is it marky mark well it depends which episode oh it switches from episode post
Starting point is 00:17:06 or marky mark got it yeah good stuff i gotta watch that show yeah yeah um when could i do it do you think um well if you do you have your calendar in front of you yeah right here okay let's see yeah oh wow you're busy oh wait this is last year's is last year's calendar. Okay. You want this year's? Yeah, yeah. Or next year's? Let's just skip ahead next year because I know you're busy. Yeah, I'm pretty busy this year. So let's go May 2023.
Starting point is 00:17:33 Okay. Here you go. Check this out. Oh, my God. You are busy. Slammed. Busy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:40 Sorry, bro. And every day you have three, four hours blocked off for jerking off? Yeah. That's crazy. And not, see, this is the problem, not four hours right in a row either. Yeah, it's spread all over. It's two minutes a piece. Two minute increments.
Starting point is 00:17:59 Wow. And then in between, 58 minutes of rest. Yeah, resting. It says resting is just blocked off. Yeah, resting. It says resting. It's just blocked off. You have a different color for each. There's resting and then icing balls. Oh, God.
Starting point is 00:18:16 Oh, boy. Are you, did you get picked up? Do you know? They haven't announced it, so obviously you can't say. No, they have and we're oh doing another season of oh yeah all right breaking news hey if this were when we were supposed to record it i guess one i guess it would have been um we did text each other right when the album came out though didn't didn't yes well we we were texting each other
Starting point is 00:18:44 when the singles were that's right and and they weren't even singles necessarily but the first one was a single and then they were just like album tracks that they released but we were we were doing that and then when the album came out you were listening to it and i was not yeah in fact i i believe i took four weeks to listen to it yes you did but i remember yes i started texting you like this song's pretty good and you're like what are you talking about i had other shit going on yes obviously um but i have listened to it um approximately one and three quarter times really that's all no probably two and a half oh man okay um. Okay. And not all in a row. Okay. So we're going to get into it. Let's do it, bro.
Starting point is 00:19:27 You know what I mean? We are going to be talking about the ins, the outs. We're going to be talking about the players, the persona, dramatis. We're going to be listing all of the band members uh in alphabetical order mixed up and um so we're going to list them in alphabetical order but also in mixed up order but we're going to take them in alphabetical order mix them all up and then and then we'll say their names okay great that sounds great yeah so because i i couldn't i mean i can name how many of these guys can you name um well how many total i think there's five members of
Starting point is 00:20:15 red hot chili peppers okay let's see here no there's four there's four there's four red hot chili peppers um who's the who's the guy who's always shouting into the mic? That's got to be a roadie then. That's who I'm thinking of. Oh, maybe. Maybe. A guy that just goes, ah. Bleep, bleep, bleep, bleep, bleep, bleep, bleep, bleep.
Starting point is 00:20:36 Yeah. I don't know. I'm going to need. Do we have a press kit, right, that we can refer to? Of course they sent us a press kit um but i don't have my glasses unfortunately but um i mean i remember seeing these guys in videos and stuff like that they were like bouncing around and they you know being silly being silly and shirtless and all that kind of stuff so we we're we you know we're we we know what we're talking about we're gonna do just fine we're gonna be a okay um very very exciting to
Starting point is 00:21:09 be uh talking about these guys once again and um very excited to hear for all of you to hear us talking about these guys once again um we do need to take a break. Uh, but, uh, when we come back, we are going to be, whoops. We're,
Starting point is 00:21:33 we are going to, it's been a while since I've done this. Um, we are going to be talking about the red hot chili peppers with their new record, whatever it is called. We are going to be covering it in detail. We will be right back with more Are You Talkin' R.H.C.P. Remy
Starting point is 00:21:57 after this. We'll be right back. hey welcome back are you talking rhcp re me here with adam scott did i say who i am? My name's Scott Aukerman. Scotty Ox, a.k.a. Scotty Ox. That is I, and I am he. And, you know, I know we're in the middle of you talking RHCP re-me, Adam, but I would be, speaking of re, I would be re-miss if I didn't bring up the fact that there's been some news items lately in music entertainment news regarding our old friend Bonobos
Starting point is 00:23:15 oh shit so I think it may be time for another episode of our other show what do you think? here we go oh shit how do you do this again from boy to boots getting them on that is this is you talking you do to me the comprehensive encyclopedia compendium of all things Getting them on, that is. This is You Talkin' You Do To Me. The comprehensive encyclopedia compendium of all things. Here to this good rock and roll music.
Starting point is 00:23:59 And that is reminding me that one show we talked about doing. Should we maybe do one episode one day? Is You Talkin' You Talkin' To Me To Me. should we maybe do one episode one day is you talking you talking to me to me the comprehensive and encyclopedic compendium of robert de niro's filmography oh yeah oh we should totally do that um but uh there there is some some hue to news and let's list the band members of that combination we got bonobos i previously mentioned him not seconds ago that's right um you got um the guy with the cap oh yeah he looks like a lego guy you know yeah when he wears that cap you know what i mean he's got that he's got that goatee that looks painted on you know the way that you would paint that on a lego guy or he's got a sticker for a face you know what i mean yeah and if you could put a little guitar on a lego guy unfortunately you can't yeah so that's
Starting point is 00:24:52 the one thing that you can't do on legos that's why it doesn't work yeah unfortunately um and then you got uh the other two who uh bring up the rear oh they sure do they lay it down yeah of course lay down the foundation. They play their instruments behind those two and whichever instruments they are, they do it well.
Starting point is 00:25:12 Now, should we say their names though? Yeah, go ahead if you remember them. Well, the man with the cap as they call him.
Starting point is 00:25:21 Cap man. Is Fedge. Fedge, of course. I remember now. And the soul man of the group. Yes, the spiritual free bird. That's Adam Clay, 2,000 pounds. Right, of course.
Starting point is 00:25:36 And then the guy just hitting the skins. And by the way, when we say skins, he's not like out there beating up people. No, no, no, no, no, no. No, he's, drums have like what they call skins. Sorry, I should have prefaced by explaining that. Go ahead. Yeah, the drum, the face of a drum, like a snare drum, the part that you hit, the very round circular part that's on the top.
Starting point is 00:26:03 They call that a skin because they used to actually be made out of skin back in you know like caveman days yeah you know like woolly mammoth skins and stuff like that yeah what is it made sorry ice age fans um vinyl or something like that of course i'm not really sure um maybe it might be made of like uh probably paper actually yeah come to think of it yeah like uh somebody called dunder mifflin because uh this guy needs another drum kit yeah like from the office yeah exactly uh yeah so those are sorry to bring up the office and that's uh that's i know they were i know that show was more popular than your show, so I really apologize. That's okay.
Starting point is 00:26:45 That's all right. That is Larry Mullen's senior son. That's right. Larry Mullen's senior son. And they're in the news, Adam, lately. A lot going on in the YouTube. For a band that has not done anything recently, they seem to have done some things recently. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:27:06 No. Well, you sent me a news item just came out the other day. Why don't you read exactly what you sent me, you naughty little candy boy? Oh, boy. Okay, let's see here. I didn't know.
Starting point is 00:27:23 Okay, here we go. You thought that I was going gonna look it up and do it you sent it to me okay here it is u2's bono announces new memoir surrender 40 songs one story so basically what the what what i got out of this this particular new story which was not made up of 40 songs i was very disappointed um is that uh he's he's written a book about 40 u2 songs and basically like tells the story of him like hey this one we thought we were recording um and fedge didn't press record and so instead we just said oh fuck we were so demoralized we just
Starting point is 00:28:06 shit out this other song and it became pride in the name of love so every single song he he goes through is the result of fedge forgetting forgetting the dude could not remember to press record well they i wonder what those songs were if Apparently they were amazing. The backup songs were like Pride, for instance. Yeah, some of the best songs of all time, but apparently they were really, really upset. Oh, man. So it's his life story through talking about these songs. Yeah, he's talking you two to the readers of the book.
Starting point is 00:28:43 In a sense, he's ripping us off. Okay. So then we need to sue him. Yes. Okay. We'll see you in court, bonobos. Yep. Too bad.
Starting point is 00:28:54 So sad. And they don't say when this book's coming out. November. Oh, okay, they do. Are you doing anything in November? I'm waiting at the bookstore for this to arrive okay even on thanksgiving yes that's what i'm doing for thanksgiving this year um okay so more news about those lovable ads in liverpool um just about like a week or so ago they
Starting point is 00:29:21 uh bonobos and fedge performed a surprise concert in a Ukraine bomb shelter. That's right. It is right. And they did it. And there seemed to be like, in the picture I see, there seemed to be like four soldiers there just kind of grooving out to it. They played Sunday Bloody Sunday, Angel of Harlem, With or Without You, and Desire. They also covered Benny King's Stand By Me replacing me with Ukraine. Stand By Ukraine.
Starting point is 00:29:53 I guess it's appropriate for the situation. The sentiment is certainly standing, but I mean, that's a very awkward fitting a three-syllable word into a one-syllable word slot. But Ukraine and me rhyme so yeah so it does work yeah so it's anyway so that and that uh uh people seemed uh in ukraine at least seemed to really enjoy that um and uh it was cool i it today. I hadn't even heard about that. But then I watched it too. It was cool. It is cool. And then other stuff that happened. We have, of course, Nancy Pelosi reads a poem by Bono about Ukraine.
Starting point is 00:30:38 When did that happen? That happened two months ago. Oh, my God. I didn't know that. We texted about it, actually. Oh, we did yes and i believe i said the democrats couldn't could not be less cool oh yeah oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah um but yeah uh she she stood up uh on saint patrick's day
Starting point is 00:31:00 and read um this poem one line of which is ireland sorrow and pain is now the ukraine and saint patrick's name now zelensky yep and um then four months ago bono says he hates you two's name songs and singer oh yeah i remember you i think you texted that to me it's like what's going on bono are you okay bonobos can't reach out to us we love you he can talk it out with us please we are we are always here for you bonobos um we if you're ever having self-doubt like this you have to have to reach out to us um six months ago you two joined tiktok with a new song um oh is it that that song for uh the sing to soundtrack
Starting point is 00:31:55 oh is that what it was oh yeah it was yeah we played that on uh on our sister show that's right but that's that's what's been going on in the i mean a surprising amount of activity but i i think nothing stirs that song sort of had a old b-side vibe to it it didn't seem like something they've done yeah did you see sing too or um are your kids too old yeah no they're not interested in sing too anymore but anymore so they were really interested for a while well no i remember going to see sing when it came out yeah and then and now they're like there couldn't be anything i'd less rather do than see sing too pretty much with dad oh sure they saw it they they went to it with their friends just them not with me um uh but that that song was all right i wonder what they're doing if they're
Starting point is 00:32:46 recording a new album or something it seems like they're hanging out a lot so that's cool and nothing mobilizes you to like a world conflict either that they can insert themselves into so uh uh that's cool i'd i would you know i mean it's it's been quite a long time since they did those shows that we went to and put out that record. That record was what, 2017? That record, that particular record. Songs of Experience? Is that the one you're asking about?
Starting point is 00:33:14 That's their last album, right? That particular, the one that you're asking about. That's the one I'm asking about. That particular one. That particular one? That came out in... In... 2017, December 1st.
Starting point is 00:33:28 So we're five years... I mean... Wow. They just keep doing these like eight years in between albums. We started the podcast in anticipation of Songs of Innocence, which was 2014. Which we're almost at a decade. So we... Did we start this podcast...
Starting point is 00:33:43 In 2014. We did, okay. How? Yeah. So we, did we start this podcast? In 2014. We did, okay. How? Yeah, so we've been doing this podcast for eight years. Well, I mean, not this podcast, because we've only been doing Red Hot Chili Peppers. Well, no, we are in the middle of this one, yes. So we have been doing this for eight years.
Starting point is 00:33:56 Yes. We got to do something for the decade, the 10-year anniversary. Oh, yeah, we'll have a big, big celebration. Big sandwich. Huge sandwiches. Just huge, huge, big sandwich huge sandwiches huge sandwiches ever seen oh my god people you'll be able to see them from space oh man and i hope that you're in space by then because oh yeah earth will be uninhabitable believe me we'll be in space uh yeah we're gonna be in space um so that's that's what's been going on with um you too all right making a lot of news yeah i have one more news item which is uh and we said
Starting point is 00:34:33 we wanted to talk about this is bono bose's son makes music oh yeah his band is pretty great his band hit number one in the UK His band Inhaler Yeah He's the lead singer of Inhaler And they're pretty good Yeah This album's really good You wanna hear some of it?
Starting point is 00:34:51 Yeah Alright this is The first single off of the It came out In 2021 Just a few months back And this is When It Breaks By Inhaler
Starting point is 00:35:02 On You talking you too me What's it gonna take for this storm to break? You don't know what you've got until it's taken away I'm not too scared to turn and face it while i'm just waking up it's just changing i like this feeling i'm not dreaming anymore upstairs is leaking you're gonna have to kick in the door Is this the song that went number one? Well, the album went number one, but this is the first single off of it. Sounds a lot like old U2 type writing with a little more modern production. And his vocal cords.
Starting point is 00:36:31 It's interesting that when you have a baby, like, what's the process? Well, the baby enters the world. No, before that. Oh, you mean like penis and vagina? Yeah. What do you do with those? Oh, you know what? Let's discuss this off the air. Okay.
Starting point is 00:36:53 Because I need... Let's pause. Diagrams, I need a laser pointer. You brought them. Which I have in the trunk of my car. Yeah, in your pickup truck. That's right. Okay, let's pause really quick and we'll come back.
Starting point is 00:37:06 Great. Oh my God. Yeah. Wow. It's a big deal. That's gross. Well, sure, it's gross, but that's what's necessary. So you have to do this?
Starting point is 00:37:17 You have to do this. Oh God, I'm not looking forward to that. Yeah, you have to try at least. Okay. I know. Okay. forward to that yeah you you have to try at least okay i know okay anyway so but it's weird when you have sex and then a baby comes out that's right and that baby has like is constructed in such a way that has such similar vocal cords yeah and uh it's called jeans designer jeans
Starting point is 00:37:43 oh my god we'll see you next time thanks bye It's called jeans. Designer jeans. Oh, my God. Oh, man. We'll see you next time. Thanks. Bye. Bye. Bye. Wow.
Starting point is 00:38:03 So that was the first Are You Talking U2 to me episode you talking you too to me episode in several years i would imagine yeah i think yeah we i mean i think there was one maybe in the last couple years like a couple years ago or so worth the wait yeah yeah worth so right definitely yeah definitely a lot of good stuff happening in the youtube camp these days yeah um is anything going on with that other band that we talked about uh i know uh rem should we just do... from what was it from from something to something i don't remember I don't remember at all This is
Starting point is 00:39:26 Are you talking to R.E.M. R.E.M.E. The Comprehensive Encyclopedia Compendium Of all things R.E.M. This is good rock and roll music From ages of you To
Starting point is 00:39:35 No Was it alphabetical Or was it It was something From one thousand From one million To No
Starting point is 00:39:43 No We'll never know. Hey, but if you know out there, drop us a line. I wonder how we find out. I don't know. Drop us a line, though. Like, swing by our house.
Starting point is 00:39:58 Yeah, please come. Let us know. Please. Please come. We'd love to have you. Any day. And it doesn't matter if it's during dinner.
Starting point is 00:40:05 Honestly, like we- Dinner's actually a great time. I eat dinner at different times during the day. You know, it's never the same time. So don't- Like when I got here today, it's what, noon? Yeah, I was having a big turkey dinner. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:18 Gravy. Oh, gravy. Oh. Oh. Oh, gravy. So wait, has there been uh rem news well stipend put out some stuff or one song or no he put out a couple of songs sure he did the velvet underground um covers record i know that um that sounded cool yeah did you oh gosh that Oh, gosh. That's right. I wish I could find it.
Starting point is 00:40:45 There was another new song. Do you know what song he did? Was it Venus? I don't think so. Venus and Furs? There was also another new song. Or Bananarama's Venus? What if he did that on the Velvet Underground?
Starting point is 00:40:58 That would be really weird. It's just, she's got it. Oh, baby, she's got it. And no one wanted to tell him that it's not velvet that wasn't that wasn't the velvet underground mikey um i can pull it up here in a second but what were you gonna say um there was another new song that he played or or that he played on rick rubin's uh podcast oh really rick rubin has a podcast working our end of the street huh that's right rube uh hey oh and there was some there was some old uh sourpuss news too but that's jesus sorry wrong wrong show well it would have worked yeah it would have been great on that previous
Starting point is 00:41:37 show but i don't think they've ever worked with him um but hey rubin stick to what you do best turn in levels up and down you don't need to make a podcast flipping the knobs right yeah just flip the knobs rube that's all we want out of you okay let's hear it this is sunday morning oh you found it by michael stipe from the i'll Be Your Mirror a tribute to the Velvet Underground and Nico album compilation album
Starting point is 00:42:09 featuring Matt Berninger and Sharon Van Etten Andrew Bird Kurt Weill St. Vincent Thurston Moore King Princess
Starting point is 00:42:18 Courtney Barnett Fontaine's DC Iggy Pop and Kurt Weill this is Michael Stipe. This is boring. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:42:50 We will... I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt that it eventually starts. But I don't have that kind of time, my man. I do love that song, Sunday Morning. I love Sunday Morning, but that felt a little too much like Sunday morning in church when I'm sleeping during the sermon. That's a real problem, by the way. You have to sleep when you're at home in bed. Yeah, exactly. Not at church.
Starting point is 00:43:16 Not at church. That's what I mean. Yeah. All right. Well, we'll see you next time i guess good app yeah yeah okay it covered everything that's been going on with rm right all right they put out a reissue of their their uh one of their records that's the thing the it didn't have anything new on it new adventures reissue yeah that's right okay now i'm remembering we didn't do an episode because there was nothing new on it yeah if they you know hey for the next
Starting point is 00:44:05 one what's the next one it would be up okay for up and by the way we're still years away from it because they do it on the 20th anniversary or 30th anniversary yeah so you know when up comes out put something new on it and we'll uh gladly do you a solid and do an episode well it's just weird that they didn't put anything new on it because uh i'm sure there's a lot of stuff yeah it was weird on new adventures it's a lot like my big huge album my friend al it was weird oh man okay should we get to this uh album well we gotta take a break so uh when we come back we will be talking about uh the the album unlimited love by the red hot chili peppers we will be right back with more are you talking rhcp remy after this Welcome back.
Starting point is 00:45:19 Are you talking RHCP? Read me. And that was the band we were talking about rhcp um and uh they adam take us through this take us through the chronology they what'd they do recently the band yeah well they uh you mean like what they did something big didn't they recently yeah yeah they put out this new album yeah yeah their new album came out yeah okay well john frusciante quit in what 2010 2009 something like that somewhere around around Stadium Arcade. We covered all this on the show in previous episodes. So him coming back in 2020 was a really big deal. Because the Josh Klinghoff, and again, we covered all of this.
Starting point is 00:46:13 The Josh Klinghoffer era was not panned necessarily, but not widely embraced. It just didn't quite gel or click. And John Trusciante was always that ingredient that made the band get to you know whenever they got to you know any sort of greatness it was because he was it was the four of them together right yeah um and so he came back and was like bros i'm back for the second time because he quit twice yeah he quit in 92 first yeah and i bet he quits again yeah i he might quit before we're done uh doing this recording this um and if he does quit please john let us know if you're quitting because we'd love to break the news yeah we would love
Starting point is 00:46:57 man to get an exclusive on this show be incredible um so they put they they they were ready to go with this record, I think, a while back. I think they were dropping it in 2020. No, I'm telling you, when we were doing our show, they were just getting back to, like, he didn't rejoin until, what, like January 2020, something like that? I'm going to get a little bit of information here. In 2019, he rejoined. December 15th, yes.
Starting point is 00:47:31 There you go. But you said 2020, did you not? Okay, but I thought it was January 2020. I was off by like a month. But then they were recording this whole time. Yeah, the month that turned into a whole, flipping the calendar over. That's right.
Starting point is 00:47:46 Jesus. So anyway, yeah, rehearsals were halted due to COVID-19. There you go. There we go. They resumed in 2021. And they got Rick Rubin back, who people would know as the bearded one. Right. Because was it Danger Mouse that produced the last one? at some points, but didn't John kind of dislike Rick Rubin's production style by Stadium Arcadium and only did Stadium Arcadium in order to say like,
Starting point is 00:48:30 hey, if I can be a little more hands-on in the mixing because I don't like your mixes, there was some- I didn't know that. Yeah, there was some sort of disagreement where he felt like the guitar was always turned down. Oh, really? So yeah, so they kind of had a disagreement about that but so which is it was surprising to me that rick rubin was back and um
Starting point is 00:48:52 but but then anthony key just just wanted to do something different i think because they were sort of flailing about going like no one listens to us anymore and so they got danger mouse and that didn't help i had heard that there was some Rick Rubin, Josh Klinghoffer tension on I'm With You as well, right? Yes, yes. And Danger Mouse, there was some interesting stuff on that album. There were some good songs and stuff,
Starting point is 00:49:14 but it just didn't quite gel. Yeah, I mean, we covered all this, obviously. Yeah, that was widely listened to. Right. So now Rick Rubin's back and Joan brishante's back and here we are and they're you know obviously this is the four musicians and producer who did the albums uh of uh there was that big one uh blood sexy sugar and then they did skip ahead to uh the one where they talk about california and then uh the next one that they talk about California, and then the next one that they talk about California,
Starting point is 00:49:46 and then Stadium. Those are the four that this group of five people did. Yes. Yes. They're back, baby. Oh, they are back. Which is your favorite of those previous four that they had done? I think probably, I don't know know did we ever get to ranking their albums
Starting point is 00:50:07 probably a blood sugar sex magic by the way the other one californication by the way stadium arcade oh yeah so four and this will be five right this will be five yeah so my favorite is it's well i mean it's definitely between the blood one yeah and the california one the first california one right okay um go back and forth probably the blood okay yeah what about you probably by the way interesting i love that i mean that's a mellow album yes um and that's well i mean we'll we'll talk about this record we'll talk about exactly what do we want out of a Red Hot Chili Peppers. I mean, let's go through some stats. Released on April 1, 2022. The singles are Black Summer and These Are The Ways.
Starting point is 00:50:54 It went to number one, I believe, in 16 different countries. And the second number one on the billboard 200 and the first since stadium arcadium and the longest gap ever between number one albums ever since celine dion waited 17 years and nearly eight months between her number one albums um wow so stadium arcadium was 2006 right 2006 that's a while that's a long time and um they 16 years jesus jesus christ jesus jesus christ jesus fucking christ chili peppers um so now what what what were your expectations for this what do you want out of a red hot chili peppers album in 2022 the thing that i like about them when frusciante's in the band is their big arena ready hooks hooks and melodies and all those
Starting point is 00:51:57 beautiful kind of wall of sound backing vocals that that john frusciante uh likes to pipe in there okay um i like all that's all my favorite stuff from stadium arcadium are the really poppy hooky fun uh songs all right i i think that i much like by the album by the way all i really would like is is for it to be a mellow listen when you're sitting in the pool that doesn't get too embarrassing yeah you know what i mean yeah like something that kind of makes you feel like wow i'm enjoying the weather these harmonies yes and melodies are making me enjoy the weather but it's not too it's not right it's not sex rap yes it's not doing some of the more embarrassing rapping stuff it's just kind of a pleasant listen that's what i'm looking for yes and i think also something we touched on on the podcast before so we don't need to go into it because we already did is that maybe the music that these
Starting point is 00:52:56 guys inspired like that late 90s kind of rap rock that kind of took over for a while is maybe more embarrassing than what they've done themselves but there is a point on most chili peppers records where you're kind of like maybe it goes a little into that and it's not as fun every once in a while the cringe factor uh goes off the charts with these guys and we'll see if that happens on this record are you ready to hear some songs sure okay this was the first single and the lead-off track. This is track number one on Unlimited Love. This is Black Summer by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, aka RHCP. Or as David Wayne would call them, the Red Hot Chill Peps. The Peppy Chills. Here we go, Black Summer. The peppy chills.
Starting point is 00:53:42 Here we go. Black Summer. Black Summer. takes its piece of your supply The night is dressed like noon A sailor spoke too soon And China's on the dark side of the moon Hit me now
Starting point is 00:54:27 Platypus are a few The secret life of Rue A personality I never knew Get it on My cradle weighs a ton The archer's on the run And no one stands alone Behind the sun Kick it!
Starting point is 00:55:14 Here it goes. It's been a long time Since I made a new friend Waiting on another Black summer to wear It's been a long time and you've never known Waiting on another black summer to win I also love the shredding that John Bouchante steps into.
Starting point is 00:55:40 I should have mentioned that as well. I want to hear him shred. Yeah, you want to hear him? And he does not disappoint with this particular ounce of shredding. No, not at all. This shreds. So let's talk about this. This was, of course, the first song we heard off the record.
Starting point is 00:55:54 And you and I were texting furiously. Our little thumbs were sore by the end of the night. Oh, man. I had to put them on ice. Yeah. I put them in ice. I put mine on dry ice. Oh yeah cup you got fucked up i noticed um so obviously we've heard this quite a few times since then it's been a few months
Starting point is 00:56:17 or as kita says in this it's been a long time yeah this is the first of it's been a long times yes in this record is there more than that i believe so oh that's funny um it's one of the easier lyrics to come up with it's been a long time since you rock and roll been a long time um what do we think of it now now our let's talk about our initial reactions and what we think about it now my initial reaction was this is exactly what i want with these guys being back together um it has all the sort of ingredients of of the their kind of past glories together other than other than the uplifting like it's not a give it away no kind of song it's like it's a soul to squeezy kind of yeah and what's the one extra pleasing californication uh the um the their first single
Starting point is 00:57:13 from that um i couldn't tell you the one where they're out they're they're in the car in the convertible driving through the desert it's a really kind of ballady car yeah in the video they're in a car um i'll look it up okay anyway um it has i'm just gonna blurt it out when i when i hear it i'm just gonna blurt it out no matter what you're saying so i i continue liked it immediately scar tissue scar tissue um i liked it immediately still do and the the big chorus is, is a lot of fun. Catchy. It's, it's exactly what I like. I,
Starting point is 00:57:48 I liked it when I heard it and you know, I had a big issue with what he's doing with his accent. Oh, you do. I had, I had, I had a big issue with the whole, the,
Starting point is 00:58:02 what's he do? The pirates go to sleep you know he's doing some weird like sea shanty kind of thing where he's like you park your car in harvard yard sure at one point he says the word china and i don't i don't know that i love the way he says the word china okay china okay um so i had i had an issue where i'm just like why is he doing this have we cracked this yet as as a nation as a nation i'm not sure we have um i i think uh i don't really care i think it sounds cool um i didn't really care about it but it did kind of make a little mark.
Starting point is 00:58:45 Like people were like, what's going on? Why? Is he trying to talk like a pirate? I didn't mind it. I think it sounds fine. I think a few months on, I've grown used to it now
Starting point is 00:58:56 where it doesn't sound as weird. It's sort of like the Been Around the World song or whatever. He goes, gling, glong, gling, gling, gling, glong, gling, and you're just sort of like, I mean, I've heard it so many times, that's just what he does in that.
Starting point is 00:59:08 Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's like you make an excuse for your asshole friend at a party who's just like, you know, it's just the way he acts when he, like, you know, he gets so few nights a week to, but Anthony, he gets so few nights a week to come to the studio. It's just him acting out. It's what he does. It's part of knowing him.
Starting point is 00:59:25 I don't know. I like it. I think it's fine. I do think it hits all those notes, though. Like, again, all I want is something I can get on a floaty
Starting point is 00:59:34 in the pool and just vibe out in California and whip it out and just furiously masturbate while my neighbors watch. No, no. you can't do any of that okay all right maybe not um so if you had to give a letter grade what would you give
Starting point is 00:59:53 that to this song to that song i would give it an a i would give it a q hmm that's interesting yeah okay all right let's go to track number two. This is Here Ever After. This is track number two by Red Hot Chili Peppers from Unlimited Love on RHCP. Rimi. I was raving I love my cuz She was waving that dope man up Banged him on cause I seen no future. Sat her down when I poured that tea.
Starting point is 01:00:48 I don't know cause I got big temper. Stick close to my rainbow side. Candy corn and that dancing leopard. That's all folks, that's all. She's the kind of girl who make you wanna go faster now. She's the kind of girl who make you steal your child. She's the kind of girl, she's in the here and the right And I dance and cry for help and I don't deny
Starting point is 01:01:11 I don't know, but it's finally just one more mile Features are sold and I'm giving up on that Humpty style At the Caldwell, crossed from the blacktop She's Eurasian, met her at the quick stop We danced at Tito's, go, go Girlfriend's back now, she's gone solo All right. There's a crowd helping out down here now When my feet come out, give it up to that drugstore All right. Here ever after. What do you think?
Starting point is 01:01:52 Well, we're back to his patented fast patter type of song, which is usually gibberish. Just whatever sounds good coming out of his mouth. He's talking about Humpty style. In this song he says that? With this song, yeah. Which brings to mind of course
Starting point is 01:02:16 Humpty Dumpty from Puss in Boots. Wasn't there also a song on Stadium Arcade? Humpty Dance or something? Humpty Dumpty from Puss in Boots is what he's referencing. Okay. Is he? a song on Stadium Arcade. Humpty Dumpty. Humpty Dance or something? Humpty Dumpty from Puss in Boots. Is what he's referencing. Okay. Is he? Humpty Dumpty from Puss in Boots. Okay.
Starting point is 01:02:33 I guess my knock on this is I wouldn't say it's the most memorable song in the world. Uh-huh. What do you think? I like it a lot. I like how no frills it is Uh-huh. What do you think? I like it a lot. I like how no frills it is production-wise. It's really...
Starting point is 01:02:49 You hate frills. I don't... Get rid of the frills for me. Cut them out. What do you think about George Michael's jacket in the Whams
Starting point is 01:02:56 I'm Your Man video? Too many frills. Yeah, I know. And I like the kind of power poppiness of it. I really like this song. And for me, lyrics, you don't care, don't matter quite as much. Because as long as it sounds, and that's what he coasts on.
Starting point is 01:03:14 Would you agree? Guys like you, ambivalence towards lyrics. Yes. Who are just like, whatever. I really like it. You really like it so so letter grade uh is this are we going to be doing this for every song giving them letter grades like we're a couple of teachers you've played teachers in your career have veronica mars most famously you were a skeevy lecherous teacher that's right closest role to your actual personality probably
Starting point is 01:03:46 yeah um i think it's okay i don't know okay all right here we go you've also heard the album twice but i've heard i've heard the beginning of the album more than i've heard the end of the album okay this album is weirdly backloaded in my opinion you'd think so because i kind of feel like it could it could end at track 12 or something like that and be just fine okay but you've probably listened to the second half of the album once but i zone out each time that i listen to it well the one time you did no come on now i've listened to it twice. Okay. All right, here we go. This is track three. This is, I don't even want to say it, but this is track three. Here we go. This is track three from Unlimited Love. We'll be right back. Or maybe it was Suzy Sue Day to day with the way we play
Starting point is 01:05:05 Well everybody needs to eat Girl has gone in the front door too Well I guess we move our feet And I don't know why The color of your eyes Was stolen from the sky And earthquakes never need to lie Aquatic Mouth Dance
Starting point is 01:05:24 That's the title. Aquatic Mouth Dance. That's the title. Aquatic Mouth Dance. All right. Okay, so this was my... The first time I heard the record... By the way, I like these horns. First time I heard the record, I was like, Oh, wow, finally one I like.
Starting point is 01:05:44 This is track seven, right? because i was so put to sleep by the previous song that i thought it had been going on for a half hour and i was like oh i like this and then i was like what is this title then i looked down and it was aquatic mouth dance yeah what do you think about that? This is not my vibe. You know what I like? Okay. You know what I like, though, is when all the horns come in. Yeah, it sounds good. But this is not the Red Hot Chili Peppers that you want to hear.
Starting point is 01:06:13 It's not my favorite. It's not my sweet spot. What do you think about just the concept of an aquatic mouthpiece? I don't know. I don't know. What do you think an aquatic mouth dance? I don't know. I don't know. What do you think it's referring to? I don't know. I mean, that sounds nice.
Starting point is 01:06:32 I like this. It sounds good. Sort of a fleek's jazz horn training coming into play. Yeah. Not my favorite. What if he hadn't called it Aquatic Mouth Dance? It still wouldn't be
Starting point is 01:06:50 my favorite. It's one I would probably tram off. What if, what if, he was singing about the TV show Severance? Oh, then I would,
Starting point is 01:06:58 I would be all for it. All in. Pushing your chips. And I feel like it would make a lot of sense. Severance. Yeah. It would make a lot of sense severance yeah it would make a lot of severance hologram so you like this song more than the last one i do weirdly i just i but i but i find i can't like it because it's called aquatic mouth i hear you but at the same time like if you were to ask me even now what the previous song's title was i couldn't tell you because it's so bland i felt
Starting point is 01:07:31 that that second song didn't really stick with me until i'd heard it a few times and i and i think it's much better than than you think but i can remember aquatic mouth dance you know sure can it's hard to forget. It's the only title I can really remember on this record. There you go. Because it sucks so bad. All right. This is not the one.
Starting point is 01:07:54 This is the Red Hot Chili Peppers, by the way. Oh, by the way. I didn't even mean to do that, but it was funny. Wow. But you're listening to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This is track four not the one this is one of the ones they put out ahead of time right i'm not the person that you thought I was. This is one of the ones they put out ahead of time, right?
Starting point is 01:08:27 I'm not the one you thought you knew. I'd do most anything to make you think that I'm the one. I'd do it all to get to you You see me as the perfect compliment You think that I'm someone to choose
Starting point is 01:09:01 You see me in a way that Thank you. Give me the love and I'll tell you when I want to come. Give me the love and I'll tell you when I want to run. Blue strides are calling and I can't stop falling. Give me the love and I'll tell you when I want to run. All right, what do we think of Not The One? What do you think? Always laying it off on me. I actually like this. This is what I mean when I say
Starting point is 01:09:58 what I'm looking for is something to not be too embarrassing. Like he's not saying anything embarrassing. It's very tasteful. I wouldn't say that it's like grabbing me. But when it first started, I could hear the melody in my head. So it's stuck in my head since I've heard it. So I think it's all right. But is it too slow for this early in the album?
Starting point is 01:10:20 It is weirdly up front. Bear in mind, it's following aquatic mouth dance. I know. That's why it's weird. I think it's fine too. And aquatic mouth dance is fine too, even though that's what it's called. They're just not like my favorites, but they're fine. Okay.
Starting point is 01:10:38 All right. Now we're going to move on to track five. This is Poster Child. Now, what do you think when you hear the title P child i think of a child uh that enjoys posters isn't that what it is so is that what it means a child who collects posters collects and like old movie posters movie posters uh boy do i love a good movie poster oh boy or or even like lost dog posters Those, a poster with just a picture of a landscape on it. Sure. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:11:09 Or a poster, you know, painted in landscape where they turn it on its side. So it looks like it's letterboxed. That's right. I love it. This is Poster Child, and hopefully it deals with all of these feelings that we're feeling when we hear this. This is track five from Unlimited Love. And by the way, this is by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This one came out before this.
Starting point is 01:11:38 That's right. Let a man rob a plant with the fatter of a sycophant And use it by Ulysses Grant to record at the record flat Islamabad is on the not a fan of at the riot squad And if you want to be a mob, you'll have to meet me at the quad You got the best of my logo I'll take the rest of your showboat You got the best of my yoko I'll take the rest of your no-no Parliament's a time of dark the hats were
Starting point is 01:12:05 filling up with fog we'll talk about the life and death of every penny and i love the 70s was such a win singing the led zeppelin lizzie looking mad at finn the times and ted another twin my daughter won the lottery the numbers never thought of me so see it's like three songs in a row that aren't totally for me. I see what you're saying about how you think it's back-loaded. Yeah. For your taste, yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:33 This is, I mean, for me, this is a stinker. But when this came out, I think we were texting back and forth saying, why would this be the second song that you would want people to hear off this record? I feel like it might be a nod to old school fans. Yeah. Of the more kind of funk. Do you think that he, Anthony, whatever his name is, gets excited when he hears the song and goes, oh boy, I get to write a whole page full of dumb shit. And it's going to suck.
Starting point is 01:13:07 No, well, maybe that's super fun, is that they can just... Because it sounds like it came from a jam, right? Yeah. This and the one before kind of sound like they were formed out... Because I know they just jam, and sometimes that's how songs kind of emerge. And maybe that's what this is.
Starting point is 01:13:24 It's like real funk. What a melody. I like this though. Yeah, it's a good catchy chorus. It's just not my favorite. I will say it's not like rocking or funking as hard as anything from Blood Sugar.
Starting point is 01:13:42 That's right. It's a very tasteful like hey this is funk the whole office can agree on yeah you know what i mean it's maybe that's why i'm just sort of it's just sort of uh yeah it's hard to form a real opinion about it yeah poster child that's uh so i just think the the the sequencing is just bizarre to have. But, you know, they probably love those shows. Those songs. You would re-sequence this, though. I think I would.
Starting point is 01:14:11 Okay. Good to know. Maybe we'll figure that out. I think we should. All right. This is The Great Apes. I don't know about this title. The Great Apes?
Starting point is 01:14:19 Well, listen to it. What about The Grape Apes? That's great. That's grape. Yep. All right right this is the great this is try we're already up to track six and we're not running out of tracks anytime soon there's 17 tracks isn't that the same number as Blood Sugar Sex? She's a boxcar rolling by Like a black star in the sky
Starting point is 01:14:56 She's a failure once or twice Like a trailer spinning out upon Izzy Island Flowers fly when we go Snakes get high on the snow On top of the wall She's an eagle out on the road
Starting point is 01:15:30 Like my favorite beetle, everyone bought and sold All my love and half my kisses Superstar, go do the dishes. I just want the great age to be free. Come on now, you lazy cowboy. Head to tail, come on right now, boy. I just want the great apes to be free She's a rainbow
Starting point is 01:16:07 All right. That's the great apes. Adam, I'm going to force you to go first. Okay, I think this is fucking rad, and I think this is where the album really starts. Ah. But you like Black Summer, though. I do.
Starting point is 01:16:27 So you would just cut out maybe two, three, four, five. I would maybe move those three songs later down the road. Where would you move Aquatic Mouth Dance? I would put that up your butt. Up your butt. No, just because I know that they love those those and so i think they should be able to have them on their album and and i would just because they're making this for themselves yes this is their present to themselves um i think this is great i think it's a new it's a new kind
Starting point is 01:16:59 of realm for them and it's like feels classic rocky and but also super catchy and fushante gets to shred i love this song i feel like it sounds like a b-side i think it's weird too i like this what do we think what do we think about uh i think he's ripping off buddy holly in this right all my love all my kisses that's what you're gonna miss is, oh boy, oh boy. Maybe. Oh boy. So you like this. Now, this would be fun
Starting point is 01:17:31 to listen to when you're smoking a dube and micro-dosing. is shredding. I've seen Chad Smith at a few shows. I saw him at that Pearl Jam show.
Starting point is 01:17:42 Oh, yeah. He, like, shows up at Pearl Jam shows like he's like, could I be in this band um i like chad smith me too uh he was in the once when i did seth myers he was just with playing in the band really yeah it seems like he loves to play the drums and he goes around going like i play the drums yeah i was out there and i was just like is that chad smith um all right so that was that's track uh one two three four five that's track six out of 17
Starting point is 01:18:14 oh boy all right let's let's blow through them this is it's only natural um this is track seven is that right oh boy this is track is track seven. It's only natural. Here we go. Slapping the bass. not enough smile but he sure could fly she was a daddy's girl proud of all bricks done with dragon
Starting point is 01:19:13 style but she can't go home tonight it's only Go home for a night It's only natural
Starting point is 01:19:30 And love will show you how to break it down In spite of attraction Well, it's only natural And people will show you how to take it down In spite of love See, I feel like it's a bummer that you only listen to this album once. No, I listen to it more than once. Come on. Because I feel like there are a lot of real, like, profound growers on this album. And it's really, like, the thing that kind of over time
Starting point is 01:20:12 that I really appreciate about it is it really has a feel of, like, a Laurel Canyon-y California easy rock record from the 70s. I agree. It sounds like an Eagles record from the i agree it sounds like an eagles record yeah 70s where it's really warm yes it's really warm it's it's a vibe it it uh i would say the the songs do not stand out all that much but necessarily but cumulatively, I was going to get to this when we talk about the record as a whole, but cumulatively, it feels like, oh, wow, I enjoyed just mellowing out to that album. I couldn't really place too many of the songs other than aquatic mouth dance. Yes. And that's what you mean by this is i i can relax with and not get too embarrassed yes exactly so so so poster child for instance is one where i'm like hey hey dude
Starting point is 01:21:11 stop embarrassing stop embarrassing i'm i'm trying to enjoy you in my pool yeah and the neighbors are listening to poster child but i do think that you keep it on for a few more listens and some, the songs will emerge and the hooks will come in. See now I feel like this song is like the, the, the verse sounds like, Oh wow, this should be track two because it's like a different tempo than,
Starting point is 01:21:39 than black summer. But it's interesting. The only, if I had a criticism is I don't think the chorus rises to the level of the interestingness of the verse. Like, I think then the chorus comes and it's just like, Yes, but a couple weeks ago,
Starting point is 01:21:54 this was stuck in my head for like two days. Got it. So I agree that maybe this is where I'm Not The One or whatever is now. It should be, because it does, it is emblematic of the sound of the album as a whole more than that I'm Not The One or forgetting what it's called.
Starting point is 01:22:13 Right, Not The One, yes. Yes. Yeah, totally. No, this definitely is one of these ones where it's like, hey, the classic sound is here. You got Frusciante and Fleek going, ah, you know, in the back. And then I just, i wouldn't say the
Starting point is 01:22:27 it rises to the level of of the songs they've written in the past like most of the record sounds like sort of cool vibey b-sides to me in a way that i don't mind that i that i enjoy listening but i think it's better than that it just takes a little more time how many more listens do i have to give it 17. i don't think i can do that you're gonna be out of town when they when they play right i've never even seen them play so i'm excited they are um like july 31st i think yes i believe i can say that uh our tour starts the very next day. Yeah, you can't. I can't go because I'm going to have to get up at like 5 in the morning. You can just go straight to the airport, bro. Right from...
Starting point is 01:23:12 SoFi. Actually, yeah, that's not a bad idea. It's right there. Make Kulap go because she's coming with. Yeah. Okay, this is the next track. This is track eight. This is She's a Lover, which is something that when you're talking about a woman,
Starting point is 01:23:27 sounds pretty good to me. So I'm a little intrigued. Hey, sign me. Sign me up. Sign me up for someone being a lover. This is like sneaking around music. Uh-oh. Peeking around doorways.
Starting point is 01:23:41 I'm safe, Cracky. Oh, right. peeking around doorways. The flower pink on the tree but if you pick it you'll see will it be wild and free? Oh, right. You say you want it a piece is it for sale or police? Oh, that's the easy police. Come on now.
Starting point is 01:24:00 Outside the world within ya been to the world for junior Been to the world for Junior Take to the bridge that's under Hunt for the sun to wonder What you wanna do today I'm your favorite kid, let's play Dedicated to the ones with souls She's so full of learning
Starting point is 01:24:18 Cause I Fall I She's a lover That's kind of great. The idea of waking up and hugging someone is like... And then waking up and squeezing someone. Everyone wakes up with a squeeze one way or the other. Waking up without a squeeze is like apple pie without the cheese.
Starting point is 01:25:02 I do. Have you had apple pie with cheddar cheese on top? Yeah, it's great. Love it. It's wonderful. This is another one that sounds like a 70s song to me.
Starting point is 01:25:16 A lot of these songs kind of start with just like the very basics and grow. Yeah, into like suddenly everyone's singing yeah yeah um this has got the the classic ketis that's right that's right definitely an album track but definitely of the vibe of the whole
Starting point is 01:25:40 yes totally doesn't stand out to me as being embarrassing uh ish um this is the second single this is this this no the one coming up this is oh yeah yeah track nine this is a song called these are the ways this is the second official single um kind of a who song uh who anyway these are the ways is the name of the song, and the name of the band is Red Hot Chili Peppers. Make me a fist Purple mountain road that I can't miss Have we all had enough?
Starting point is 01:26:18 Have we all had too much? Lost in a dream please step down from your bully machine can we all back it up can we all give it up
Starting point is 01:26:38 these are the ways when you come from America The sights, the sounds, the smells These are the ways when you come from America I don't want to die, yeah, she's gonna take a carrier I just want to thrive And there's gonna be hysteria Don't be late Walk us through the golden gate
Starting point is 01:27:27 Yeah! Yeah! Bruce and George Singing for their own reward I mean, this is the closest thing to, like, something they would do in the 90s or something another band would do in the 90s. You know, this is the closest to, like, grunge, almost,
Starting point is 01:27:53 that they've done on this record. And when you mentioned The Who, yes, it actually is new territory for them of, like, da-da-na-na-na-na, like an actual chorus that's building instead of him just going it is kind of a new it has like elements of like really old punk rock yes um it's a little confusing as a single to me but uh because it doesn't it doesn't feel like it's constructed like a pop no not really but i think it's definitely a nod to, because Black Summer is so structured and poppy.
Starting point is 01:28:31 And also it's one of the more upbeat songs on the record. This one is. Other than, you know, of course, Aquatic Mouth Dance. So, you know, I give them good points for the effort definitely yeah i really like it i really like chad smith uh yeah he's doing he's finally getting to do like instead just like tastefully coming in halfway through the song going yeah i think that and great apes they get to really open up and try um this is What You Thinkin'. This is the next track on the album Unlimited Love. And this is by the Red Hot Chili Peppers
Starting point is 01:29:12 on Are You Talkin' RHCP Remix. I got no reason to believe Just a theory that we do appease I don't know what you want from me Where you go to get your ecstasy Start tapping rhythm from the source Maybe I could be your crazy horse We only want it to be We only want it to be We only want it to be
Starting point is 01:29:48 Show What is it for? Come get me We only want it to be We only want it to be What you thinkin' got More than enough for you, yeah. Over and over and over again.
Starting point is 01:30:07 Well, over and over until it's end. What you thinking? Why? Mama love me drinking dirty. Over and over and over again. Well, over and over with all my friends. Adam, what you thinking? This is one of those songs where I see it on the track list,
Starting point is 01:30:28 and it's called What You Thinking. Yeah. And the way it's spelled. Yeah. And then it starts, and it's really kind of piecemeal, kind of funk, and it just doesn't sound. You love it. And then I just can't help but really like,
Starting point is 01:30:45 I think it ends up being a really well-constructed, really catchy, again, this is one that got stuck in my head for a couple of days. I really like it. It's hard for me to dislike any of this album except for those three songs. I like the move Frusciante's doing there is really interesting. Yes.
Starting point is 01:31:11 What if they put out, like, just an instrumental version of this record? Would you prefer listening to that with the backups? No, because I think that Anthony Kiedis actually comes up with really good melodies. Hooky. What if Pavarotti was singing? Oh, interesting.
Starting point is 01:31:28 I mean, I'll listen to that man sing anything. What did you think of that? You think it's nuts? I think it's B-side-ish to me. Okay. But again, fits in the vibe where I definitely like, I'm zoning out a little while I listen to it, but I'm not like, you know, rolling my eyes. Okay.
Starting point is 01:31:46 Bastards of light is the next song. And, um, this song is a song by the band red hot chili peppers. Oh, interesting. Okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:31:55 And it's, um, off of the album, unlimited love. Oh, all right. And here it is. Anything at all. And here it is. your first brawl Everyone that's there
Starting point is 01:32:27 is someone Everyone that's here is someone Everyone I swear is someone's daughter And it feels so good upon a Saturday night When the bastards come to fight And it won't be long before they carry me home
Starting point is 01:32:55 I'm the bastard of your life When it's said and done Meet me at the old meat market When it's said and done Can I please make you come? I think it's interesting that they're doing sort of a, you know, more of a Gary Neumann, new wavy synth kind of thing. I wouldn't say I like it. Really? I mean, like, it's fine. What wouldn't say I like it. Really?
Starting point is 01:33:25 I mean, like, it's fine. What do you think? You're into it? Yeah. And then, like, this country rock chorus. It's weird. All right, let's hear the chorus. It feels like, yeah, two disparate things
Starting point is 01:33:42 that they're just sort of like, hey, let's try this. Yeah. But that's why it feels like a B-side a little bit to me, but... You gotta shake this B-side thing. Hmm, do I? I think it's kind of rad. If you had a son like me, would you be disappointed?
Starting point is 01:34:02 I think it's kind of rad. If you had a son like me, would you be disappointed? No, I would coddle you and spoil you until you became more horrible. That's just your style. It has nothing to do with me. So you really like it, and it grabs you. Yes, I like that song a lot. Okay, cool.
Starting point is 01:34:21 This is a song called White Braids and Pillowchair. Yeah, sure. Very much in the Laurel Canyon vibe, just title-wise. like that song a lot okay cool this is a song called white braids and pillow chair yeah sure um very much in the laurel canyon but yes title wise well we're talking not braids necessarily i would imagine on a human head but uh in terms of uh furniture furniture stylings yeah god yeah see i really like this song too and then then they start talking about Santa Cruz at the end of the song. They do? It turns into another song and they start singing about Santa Cruz. You must have been so excited.
Starting point is 01:34:52 I jumped up and down. I promise you we'll fast forward so you can hear about Santa Cruz. Yes. She's a loaded cobra And she wanted to be with me For the ride In a Sunday diner I'm reminded
Starting point is 01:35:15 There's no final place To choose But babe I can see What's right with you White braids and pillow play I could spend my nights with you This pussy will obey
Starting point is 01:35:39 I can see all sides of you White braids and pillow chair I can see all sides of you. White braids and pillow chair. I don't know what I would do without your pillow. She's a Barbie. Then we go back to verse. Mm-hmm. Is there a chorus?
Starting point is 01:36:04 I think that was it, but that was it. But then it changes. Okay, let's fast forward a little bit here we go California Santa Cruz in June. Is that a great month to be in Santa Cruz in June. Is that a great month to be in Santa Cruz? Oh, yeah. San Francisco Bay. Safe to say, take away.
Starting point is 01:37:00 San Francisco Bay. San Francisco, Santa Cruz. He's hitting all... California, baby. San Francisco, Santa Cruz. He's hitting all... California, baby. The northern hot spots. That's the thing is with this album, they're going up to northern California. Yeah, well, I mean, yeah,
Starting point is 01:37:15 they certainly have talked about Los Angeles and the bridges they're in. That's right. But when it comes to northern California, they've been a little bit jealous. A little chintzy. So to hear them singing about Santa Cruz. And San Francisco.
Starting point is 01:37:32 And San Francisco is a huge thrill for the Bay Area boys. Oh boy. Um, so you like that one, obviously, because. I do. I think it's definitely like. And mellow. Tone setter. tone setter album track right kind of thing but i yeah i like it okay this is one-way traffic and this is um i mean that concept is like it always raises the blood pressure when you see like a one-way street oh man am i going down this the right way am i going the wrong way on a one-way street. Oh, man. Am I going down this the right way? Am I going the wrong way on a one-way street?
Starting point is 01:38:07 And obviously, this music kind of evokes that feeling. Let's hear it. One-way track. My son in San Marino Guess that makes me Angelino Friends got married, had them dogs Now they read those catalogs This commerce makes me nauseous
Starting point is 01:38:22 When did life get so damn cautious? So I drive in search of smiles XM on, let's check out miles This life's a life when you're out on the road There's always extra nights when there's someone to hold Hey-oh, hey-oh, would you be my traffic jam? This is one of the ones I would have leaked out before the album came out.
Starting point is 01:38:46 Seems like they leaked it out. Yeah. Just the dribble out of a pee hole. But you like it. It's fine. This is one I would control alt delete. It's not my fave, but whatever. But you would have leaked it out.
Starting point is 01:39:07 Well, instead of... Instead of that way poster child yes yeah like to like show like hey we're still it sounds like that yeah that old freaky styley song you were playing earlier yeah sex rap yeah is that what it was it sounds sort of like that it does sound like sex rap yeah you're you are correct about that um this is veronica this is not the elvis costello song veronica um but it is in fact the red hot chili peppers oh interesting doing a song called veronica okay they have written so they're covering elvis let's hear this. My name is Veronica. Wait, this doesn't sound like Elvis Costello. I play the harmonica.
Starting point is 01:39:57 Chicago. Chicago. Remember my raincoat. We love you the same way My life is a rope swing Always heading back to From where I came Got no need to blame you Danger, danger
Starting point is 01:40:27 Everyone goes for a ride Danger, danger Everyone loses their mind My name is Nebraska What do you think of Veronica? I really like this song. The only thing I don't like is the Chicago. You know, I think...
Starting point is 01:40:59 You're not paying attention to him as much as I am. No, an early theory of mine is one of the keys to their popularity is Anthony Kiedis' singing and the fact that most people can sing along in their car and feel like they're... They're rock stars. Yeah, this dude
Starting point is 01:41:17 can't sing and I can't sing either. I think he's a good singer, but I think that it's deceptive and it makes people feel like they can keep up with him and match his pitch or whatever. But I think he's far better than that. But I think it's sort of a thing that makes them feel relatable in a way. Right. Right.
Starting point is 01:41:41 But I do like that song. It sounds like a by the way song to me. Yes. Okay. We just have three more okay okay this is let him cry which is kind of the sentiment behind that is like i don't know i don't know about that but let's hear what he has to say about it this is let him cry by a band called the red hot chili peppers chili oh okay aka the chili peps i'm surprised every time you say that i don't know why so We'll see you next time. I'll be home at 3 a.m. to kiss you in the morning. Cry, cry, let them cry. Know what I have deep inside.
Starting point is 01:43:01 It's time to break free from the mousetrap when it's stormy. Up up the lover, we got the mother. Touch up the neighbor, she don't mind. Up up the boner, we got the boner. All I know is I feel fine. Up up another, we got the cover. Touch up the waiter, they don't mind. Up up the boner, we got Madonna.
Starting point is 01:43:24 All I know is I feel like that must bother you. No, I'm saying that reminds me of the 70s. You know, this guitar turn. I mean, are the lyrics a little... Oh, here's some horns. Yeah. Sounds good. See, this is a sound that I think I'm interested in hearing.
Starting point is 01:43:47 The Red Hot Chili Peppers with tasteful horns behind them. I could hear a whole album of this. But they've done that before, haven't they? They had a lot of horns. They used to have a lot of funk horns. I'm saying tasteful horns, like easy listening horns. Like Chuck Mangione. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 01:44:03 Herb Alpert that does sound good sounds nice it's a little at the beginning a little like hey Anthony pipe down
Starting point is 01:44:12 I'm trying to enjoy the red hot chili peppers but but but I like it yeah alright two more songs and we are at the end of the album.
Starting point is 01:44:29 This is the last sort of more like regular big song. This is called The Heavy Wing. Whoa. What band is playing that? This is by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Oh, okay. sounds what band is uh playing this is by the red hot chili peppers okay um los angeles's own red hot chili peppers no on are you talking rhcp reme guitar solo Golden light Streaming from your eyes
Starting point is 01:45:26 Gave me a piece of the real thing And I live with you this life Strict and clean A restless Wolverine An eloquent part of the whole dance And I stray Tell the whole world to slow down We gotta get off and we gotta go round
Starting point is 01:46:05 Tell the whole world to roll down The window is broken Forever unspoken Only whenever Oh, I know that it's only gold and I'm cold, so now for everything, it's all in this way. Oh, I know that it's only gold and I'm cold, so now for everything, it's all in this way. That is all we know Very, like, capital R rock. I almost feel like this is a track two. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:46:51 In a way. Like, because this is like, this is one of the few songs on the album that's like, hey, pay attention. Yeah. And that's, of course, John singing the chorus, which sounds cool. Maybe they felt like they couldn't have
Starting point is 01:47:02 John singing the chorus in the second song or whatever, but I feel like it's like, guys yeah it's weird that this is the second to last song yeah and it's this big epic yeah but but it definitely is like one of the ones that i remember the most because i feel like i've heard this song this is the fourth time i'm hearing it yeah and and i feel like this is one that i'm always like oh when he starts singing i'm always like oh and the guitar tone is right it's a cool song um so anyway it goes on like that for a while and then um and then we have now this is curious adam we have a song called tangelo now or tangelo tangelo it could be as well um now uh did you know that in one of the first in the first year of comedy bang bang i sang a song called tangelo
Starting point is 01:47:57 no uh in my weirder scott persona no uh as a parody of youtube's vertigo it was all about a guy selling tangelos down at the farmer's market i did not and so when i saw suddenly tangelo or tangelo as a song on this i'm like yeah that's fucked up these guys are paying attention at least yeah i think we're on their radar certainly and you should litigate definitely we. We'll see you in court, RHCP. But until then, we'll hear you on the podcast. This is the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Oh, okay. It's Angelo or Tangello.
Starting point is 01:48:35 However you want to say it, they're going to sing it on RHCP Remix. When I'm with you I like this. No, the verdict's in. I like this. Are you saying that because you only have 60 seconds until you have to go?
Starting point is 01:48:55 That's right. No, I do like this. I think this is a nice closer, but I feel like maybe... It's a lot like Kevin Bacon's wife. Yeah, Kira Sedgwick. I feel like we need to have an episode where we re-sequence the album.
Starting point is 01:49:10 But I feel like your version would be like three songs long. No, no. I would... No. Like I say, I enjoy listening to this. It's definitely not one of those ones where I'm like, feeling like, oh man, if I could just cut... I mean, I would cut a couple of the songs, but where I'm just like, oh, I only like half... I feel, feel by the way sometimes it's like that where i'm like
Starting point is 01:49:27 or maybe it's californication i can't remember where i'm like oh man i really like half the album then i don't like the other half by the way has like three songs i would drop right right and then i feel like it's like they're closest to like a, yeah, the classic record. Consistent, yeah. So any last thoughts on Unlimited Love? I think it's really good. And I think that it is a, I hope they make more records with Sean Fasciante. Does it feel like a preamble to you? Like they're warming up?
Starting point is 01:49:59 Like they're, like they're, this, it feels like an opening salvo certainly. But not like a definitive statement like where he could leave the band after this and go like i did it yeah no but but i do think that they're all the you know you have to listen to it a lot and the album really emerges i think it's a really more sophisticated album than than it uh than it seems at first glance. Right. I really like it a lot. Well, that's going to do it for us. We did it.
Starting point is 01:50:28 We got together. We did it. We talked about this record, and we continued on with our quest to give you the most comprehensive Red Hot Chili Peppers podcast available. That's right. Anywhere you get podcasts, of course, you will find none better than this one.
Starting point is 01:50:44 Adam, it's great to see you. Next episode, we'll say the band member names. Yeah, I can't remember them today. Okay. We'll see you next time. Bye. Can't stop addicted to the shindig Chop top, it says I'm gonna win big
