UAP Unidentified Alien Podcast - UAP Bonus! Hollywood and Aliens - Are They in the Know?

Episode Date: August 10, 2022

In this quick bonus episode, Stephen and Karen discuss some of the parallels that we see in Hollywood to today's world when it comes to alien phenomena. Is it all purely happenstance and ente...rtainment? Or does the movie industry play a bigger role than we realize? Starting point is 00:00:00 Everybody talked about it since I first moved to Oregon. The big one, the earthquake that trashed the whole West Coast, total destruction. Officially calling it the largest natural disaster in American history. I just didn't know what would help me next. So I took it all. Even the gun. It was time. Selo?

It's Stephen Diener right here, Karen Curtis over there. How's it going, Karen? Very well.
Starting point is 00:01:17 I know you have one foot out the door because you're going on Vicassione, and I grabbed you in the hall. I said, can we please, please, please do an episode about how Hollywood has been talking about aliens, you know, all away from War of the World's, my favorite Martian, the show, all the way up to there's a new movie Nope coming out. It's out. And now that the U.S. government is finally starting to publicly
Starting point is 00:01:40 acknowledge UFOs, yes. Hollywood's been all over it for years. Remember the X-Files, men in black, aliens. Oh, yeah. That's when she's in the big mech, right? Get away from her, you bitch. Classic. Sigourney Weaver.
Starting point is 00:01:58 Yes. Yes, close encounters. Do do, do, do. How does it go? It's something like that. You do a great job. Signs. Swing away, Merrill. Merrill.
Starting point is 00:02:09 Swing away. Water was the kryptonite for aliens in that movie. Yeah, and so it was in War of the World as well. Water and just the overall atmosphere of Earth. Yes. No, you're right. And so this was something, again, like a bonus episode. This doesn't really relate to the episode we teased last week,
Starting point is 00:02:30 which, like, Karen so eloquently put it, I have one foot out the door right now because I am going on vacation. Literally, right after we're done with recording this, I'm on vacation. So we didn't have the necessary time that we needed to prepare for the new episode, episode 52, which is going to be about divine or alien intervention. You decided there's a lot of very intriguing stories when it comes to that subject involves George Washington. It involves things in Fatima. There's a lot that goes into it.
Starting point is 00:02:59 Yeah. So that being said, since there is so much that goes into it, we couldn't devote the amount of time that we needed to and wanted to to make that the episode that it needs to be. So we'll do that next week when there's more time where I don't have two feet out the door, let alone one feet, one foot. Yes, I know.
Starting point is 00:03:15 I can speak, right. So this is just, again, more of like the bonus episode to kind of cover some of the things that you've brought up before, Karen, like you said, all these movies, it's always been a big thing in Hollywood,
Starting point is 00:03:25 right? Science fiction, I mean, for as long as movies have been around, science fiction, as they put it, has been a main focal point. Star Trek.
Starting point is 00:03:33 And entertainment. The Jetsons. Yeah. You name it. Yeah. My favorite Martian, I loved how his little antennae would go up from his head, you know. Uncle Martin. Oh, my gosh.
Starting point is 00:03:45 And there's a new movie out called Nope. And apparently the title comes from one of the characters saying that she's encountered aliens. And as a creature walks toward the character, the reaction is, nope. Yeah, no, I get it. I've said Nope before when I come across a spider in the house. Yeah, nope. Not doing it. The title, mental represent.
Starting point is 00:04:03 Our reaction as an audience to things that frighten us. I went to the movie, Signs, that's the Mel Gibson movie. Yeah. I was so scared. My daughter was with me. She was just like in her teens. I was so scared. I couldn't watch it.
Starting point is 00:04:17 It terrified me. N. Knight Shyamalan is a fantastic director. I know some of his movies are hit or miss, but the way that he built suspense in that movie and, of course, the Sixth Sense as well. It was so simple. Yeah, exactly. I mean, it's such a great movie. great cast. I mean, Mel Gibson,
Starting point is 00:04:33 Joaquin Phoenix, too incredible actors. And then the tinfoil hats, the kids had on. I mean, it was so symbolic, right? And Kieran Culkin, I mean, he's a, you know, a great actor now as well. What is it? In Succession. Yes. So.
Starting point is 00:04:45 But they're in this cornfield, this little house, the dog died. I mean, it's just so scary. And then, like, Sharmelon always shows up in it. And he's the neighbor. That's right. And one shows up at his house. And it's under the door in the cupboard with the three fingers. See?
Starting point is 00:05:00 Three fingers? Like the grays have three fingers. Yeah, so I guess... You cuts them off. Oh, man, what a suspenseful scene that was. I still get, like, the hebie-jeebies watching that scene today. Oh, my gosh. But I guess the question is, right, when you realize and start to, you know, look at all the different movies and all the different mentions or references toward aliens, you know, was there something that was Hollywood in the know?
Starting point is 00:05:22 Yes, exactly. You know? Or is it just something that, you know, what people are into it? So we'll make movies about aliens because people find it interesting and it, it makes. makes money at the box office. But everything that we're learning about now kind of harkens back to what we've seen in Hollywood or heard. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:38 Like in close encounters. We did the episode on sound. Sound, right. Language of the universe. Yeah. And they had the tones that they used in that movie. So maybe they are, maybe they do know something. Maybe they've known different things all along and they kind of sprinkle it into the movies.
Starting point is 00:05:54 I mean, it's a theory. It is a theory. And in the 1950s, the day the earth stood still, an invasion of the body. body snatchers. That channeled Cold War paranoia. More recent decades scarred by global terrorism. Otherworldly visitors laid ways to Washington like an Independence Day and The Avengers. X-Files went deeper. It imagined both paranormal phenomena and a vast government conspiracy. That was kind of interesting to hide extraterrestrial life. It's so cool. They even made a movie out of it. But the mass media's interest in UFOs, it kind of leads to disbelief because it's
Starting point is 00:06:30 Hollywood. Yeah. Well, you know, and that's, it's funny because. And what do you call it, CG and green screen and everything? Yeah. You know, there's also a theory that they kind of spoon feed these things to us a little bit at a time to get us used to the idea of it, get us comfortable with the idea of aliens or, you know, other worlds and whatever it might be.
Starting point is 00:06:54 So, you know, there might be something to it because it's been in movies for a long time. You mentioned a lot of good ones. Independence Day. It's one of my favorite movies. all time. Yeah. And remember how big that ship was. That reminds me of our episode about the governor of Arizona who saw that huge ship
Starting point is 00:07:09 come over, the mass sightings. Yes. Same idea. The lights in Phoenix. Yes. So there's always kind of parallels when it comes to movies and then things we end up seen in real life sightings. No, it's interesting.
Starting point is 00:07:20 I mean, you're right. Mass entertainment's kind of made it easy to dismiss believers as conspiratorial cartoons rather than treat UFOs as potentially pressing matters of scientific inquiry or or even national security. And remember the Navy pilot? We did an episode on this, David Favore. He spotted the Tic-Tac-Locke-Locke-Logh
Starting point is 00:07:37 He said it was during training exercises over the Pacific Ocean. Oh yeah, the Nimitz. We talked a lot about that. That's right. Apparently, he said his crew and his ship used Hollywood shorthand to razze him. They looped men in black,
Starting point is 00:07:49 signs and other alien invasion movies on the internal television channels. Yeah, so there you go. To razz him. Of course. But now that's been released, just recently, as evidence, of alien life.
Starting point is 00:08:01 Exactly. So isn't that funny? I mean, even within the U.S. military, you have this, you know, rising going on when it comes, oh, yeah, you're the alien guy. Yeah, let's go watch men in black and signs. But, you know, like you said, Karen, we've said it before, you know, a lot of times during our episodes is that that stigma is starting to go away a little bit, which is good because, you know, people are getting taken more seriously.
Starting point is 00:08:23 Now, look, you're always going to have your hoaxes. You always going to have people making things up. But it's nice to see that, you know, tinfoil, a hat can, conspiracy vision, you know, that people get when it comes to talking about aliens is kind of being chipped away at, you know, it's starting to go away. You can talk about it more freely now. I don't think you would have that right now in the military. No. And I think how he felt after seeing this, whatever it was. Yeah, the Tick-Tac UFO.
Starting point is 00:08:50 On his radar. That went into the ocean, by the way. That's right. And then they're making fun of him back on the ship like he's some idiot. That's why so many people decide not to say anything. That's right. So there are five movies if you don't want to go see Nope, that if you want to see how Hollywood treats UFOs and aliens,
Starting point is 00:10:13 the day the Earth stood still, 1951, even back then, alien named, what's his name, Klaatu, lands behind the White House, carrying a message from an interplanetary organization. Humans cannot be trusted with nuclear weapons. And we did an episode on that. Yes, we did. I mean, they follow our nuclear weapons. Make sure we don't blow ourselves up or the universe up.
Starting point is 00:10:35 That's right. Yes, Gort, Clatu, Barata, Nicto, classic from the Day of the Earth. So it still, I mean, that goes hand in hand with some of the stories we've spoken about, like Malcham Air Force Base, where they hovered over there and shut down the weapons. It was one of our first episodes, the day the Nukespland dead. If you haven't heard, you can go back. It's a fascinating story, and it's not the only one. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:54 And you have it right there in the 1951 classic there. And they had a remake with Keanu Reeves, I think. Like, what, maybe 10 years ago or so? Yeah, well, they remade War of the Worlds as well because there was one in 1953. UFO crashes in a small California town. It's not, however, carrying friendly aliens. And we do talk about the praying mantis aliens.
Starting point is 00:11:12 Yeah, that's one of our more recent episodes. Very evil. Not good. And actually, the aliens in War of the Worlds, at least in the Tom Cruise version, that came out, what, back in 2004, I want to say? Yes. My gosh, a movie came out almost 20 years ago.
Starting point is 00:11:25 I know. Well, that's when he, that's when the Naval officer saw the tick-tack device. Yeah, that's true. Little did we know because we didn't even hear about that Nimitz video up until two years ago. That's right. But yeah, I mean, in that version there from 2004, I believe, you know, give or take a year or two, that those aliens, they're kind of like these tripod looking things, but they do have this kind of buggy look to them. Right. They were very strange. The film's soul chilling special effects in 1959 won an Oscar. Nice. Love that. And of course, you know, we don't want to say World of the World
Starting point is 00:11:58 without mentioning H.G. Wells. And it was on the radio. They used a jar in the toilet to make the sound of the UFO. People thought it was real. They thought they were listening to a real UFO invasion. They had never heard anything like that before in the radio. There was no TV. There was no Twitter.
Starting point is 00:12:14 There was nobody to break in and say anything about it. That was their source of information. Theater of the mind and they believed it. Independence Day, we already talked about that, a summer blockbuster, of course. Love that movie. I will stop on it. Anytime it's on, by the way, side note. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:31 It was so good and it had such a good message that we could, you know, win. That's right. You know. We will not go down without a fight. Against aliens, right? A motley crew emerges as heroes as the United States rallies the world for a counterattack that begins. Oh, I guess you guessed it on July 4th. Yes, that's right.
Starting point is 00:12:50 We will not go quietly into the night, Karen. Will Smith, Bill Pullman, and Jeff Goldblum. One of the greatest movie speeches of all time, Bill Pullman, when he's making that speech. there on the tarmac before they go fight the aliens in July 4th. Oh, it's so good. Today is our Independence Day. Yeah, they all start cheering. Oh, this is fantastic.
Starting point is 00:13:09 And I really like this movie, District 9 in 2009. It's an interesting one. Yes, it's actually in South Africa where they had like an invasion of aliens and they confined them to this slum. It's always an interesting theory to me because, well, not a theory, but a premise. it was they took more of an illegal alien type of approach to it literally yeah where they put them into districts and it was district nine like you said I believe in the Johannesburg era yes South Africa yes it was supposedly in 1982 and they are either benevolent messengers or hostile invaders
Starting point is 00:13:46 but they're malnourished aliens instead right and they kept them there in this it was gross district and it was gross and but it's like a cult classic people just there's like a group of people I love that movie. And I saw it and it was, I don't know, I found it kind of disturbing, to be honest with you. Well, they said it's a clear comparison to apartheid. Yes. And, you know, similarities to forcing the relocation of black residents from Cape Towns Districts. It was, yeah, it drew a lot of similarities to that, you know, they were segregating the aliens.
Starting point is 00:14:16 So, I mean, it's, again, an interesting premise, one that you never really see being taken in movies having to do with aliens. They've actually talked about for years having a sequel to that movie, but they've never done it. I thought it was an interesting movie. And then a bonus pick, the phenomenon from 2020. Wow. If you want to brush up on your history of UFO sightings, it's for you. It's a documentary and examines reports from the 1940s until now. We talked about sightings from the 1800s in our last episode.
Starting point is 00:14:46 That's right. And the director, he's a long-time uphologist, James Fox. He uses archival footage and interviews from eyewitnesses. It's really good. And it includes, of course, the new testimony from the Navy pilots and former high-ranking government officials about their latest. The Pentagon just released. Right, exactly. No, I'm going to have to check that one out, actually.
Starting point is 00:15:08 I have never seen that, Karen. The phenomenon, released in 2020. So, yeah. All right. Very good. So next week, you're going to be back next week from vacation? Yes, that is the plan. Today was a quickie.
Starting point is 00:15:20 We just wanted to get out and, you know, put a little something different out for you. And in the meantime, until we come back with episode 52 about, you know, alien or deviant. intervention you kind of decide but this you know until then this was uh it's something to chew on it's something to kind of think about you know has hollywood been in some type of you know have they been in the no is there some type of knowledge that gets fed to them so they can again kind of trickle out information get us used to the ideas of these types of things or is it just contact was so good and you know her vision on he would have visions with her father on the beach but that's how they they actually communicate telepathically yeah it was in the in the invitation
Starting point is 00:15:57 Travel. Yeah. Kind of like the wormhole stuff. Jody Foster. Oh, man, that's one of my favorite movies of all time, let alone alien movies, you know, if you will. And Martian growing potatoes. Oh, yes, it's right, with Matt Damon. Yes.
Starting point is 00:16:13 He was on Mars. By himself. That is a good movie. All by himself. So no. And we're going to Mars. That's right. So it makes you wonder, again, I guess the main question of this little tidbit bonus episode is just something to think about.
Starting point is 00:16:24 Has Hollywood been in the know with some of these secrets? And the government uses them to say, hey, just put some of this out a little bit, sprinkle it out there, get people used to the idea. Or has it just been a lot of coincidence? Well, sure sounds like they've gotten it right for what we know now. Maybe it could just be all entertainment-based or there could be something more to it when it comes to Hollywood and some of the movies and TV shows and things they've come out with. I think Spielberg definitely knows something. I mean, ET, look at him, you know. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:16:53 I think he isn't ill. I think ET was his autobiography. That's right. Oh, I love it. Well, you have a wonderful vacation. Thank you. Please don't have lost time. No, I'll try.
Starting point is 00:17:04 Are you staying on the planet or you? We will be on planet, yes. Okay, okay. But we'll be back next week for episode 52. Originally planned there, Divine or Alien Intervention. A lot of good stories to go over from that. Really intriguing stuff that's going to make you think a lot about what you thought you knew. We'll just say that.
Starting point is 00:17:23 So until that time, you could always catch us on Apple, Spotify. Amazon music or, you know, wherever you get your pockets there on Amazon or 850WFTL.com, where the show always hangs out as well. And be sure to keep subscribing and listening. It's growing even more than we spoke last time. So exponentially. Thank you to everybody. Hopefully you continue to enjoy it and it continues to grow.
Starting point is 00:17:45 But we'll talk to you next time on UAP, the Unidentified Alien podcast for episode 52. It's Karen Curtis there. Stephen Deeter here. Have a good one. Thanks.
