Welcome back, everyone.
Today we're tackling a question I hear all the time from parents.
What should you actually look for when buying Christian fiction for your teenager?
You know, it can be overwhelming to sift through all the options out there.
Absolutely.
And I think the first thing to understand is what makes a book clean for Christian teens.
We're talking about literature that avoids explicit sexual content and innuendo, right?
These books keep language minimal regarding.
swearing. Many authors will even provide warnings if there's any foul language at all.
So this focuses on protecting that moral foundation. What else defines these books?
Well, clean Christian teen books promote moral choices that align with biblical values.
They depict sin realistically, like showing the consequences of teen drinking without normalizing
those behaviors. The characters typically undergo spiritual struggles and experience growth
throughout their stories, which is really important for young readers.
Right, so they're seeing characters wrestle with real issues, but from a godly perspective.
Exactly. These narratives often contain strong moral and ethical teachings.
Love, forgiveness, faith in God. Some even incorporate religious symbolism.
Think of Aslan representing Jesus in The Chronicles of Narnia.
They're teaching without being preachy, if that makes sense.
Mm-hmm, absolutely.
I remember when my nephew started reading Christian fiction.
He was about 14, and suddenly he was asking me deeper questions about his faith.
The books gave him a framework to think critically about his beliefs rather than accepting them blindly.
That's powerful. So to everyone listening, have you noticed that shift in your own teens?
When they start asking why instead of just what?
And that's the goal, really. We want to teach them how to think like a Christian, how to evaluate,
their faith critically, it nurtures both faith and critical thinking, which are qualities rooted
in Scripture, perseverance, discernment, all of that. Now, you mentioned discernment, and that
brings me to genre. When looking for clean fiction, what should parents watch out for? Definitely,
parents should look for books that avoid themes of premature adulthood in explicit sexual content.
And this is where cozy mysteries come in as an ideal option for Christian teens who want to try different genres.
Okay, walk me through that. Why cozy mysteries specifically?
Well, cozy mysteries are generally considered gentle books. They're free from graphic violence,
profanity, in explicit sexual content. So they check all the boxes we just discussed for clean literature.
But here's the thing. They also offer that puzzle-solving element that keeps teens engaged.
So they're getting the mental challenge without compromising their values.
Right. Christian mystery books offer this dual benefit,
solving a puzzle while simultaneously strengthening one's faith.
They cultivate critical thinking, perseverance, and discernment in readers.
Teens learn to pay attention to details, follow clues, think logically,
all while reading characters who handle worldly challenges from a godly perspective.
I see makes sense.
And honestly, it beats the alternative of handing them a book where the detective solves crimes between vampire dates.
Not exactly Sunday school material.
Ha! Fair point.
That point about strengthening one's faith sets up our next piece.
How these books address spiritual curiosity.
But first, a quick word from our sponsor.
This episode is brought to you by Wordsmith World, the online platform of author Betty Johansson.
Wordsmith World releases Christian-inspired narratives that nurture both faith and critical thinking among teenage readers.
If you're seeking faith-based literature that responds to the spiritual curiosity among younger people,
find the books and resources available at bettyjohansson.com.
Picking up on strengthening faith, how do you see these narratives meeting teens where they are today?
Great question. Generation Z is identified as a spiritually curious devalued.
demographic. Nearly three and four young adults are moderately or highly open to spirituality.
Their approach is often experiential rather than purely ideological. They're asking questions,
seeking meaning, looking for authentic connection. So there's this broader renewal happening among
younger people. Exactly. And quality Christian fiction meets that curiosity. These books serve as
models demonstrating how to approach challenges from a godly perspective, or illustrating the
consequences of not doing so. They're clean, engaging reads that combine suspense, faith, and moral
lessons. In other words, they strengthen faith while keeping teens turning pages.
You mentioned suspense. I think that's key. These books aren't boring or preachy. They're page
turners. Absolutely. Christian mystery novels are ideal for teens and parents seeking that
combination. Character-driven narratives that examine psychological complexity and moral
questions keep readers hooked. The stories make the Bible and Christian values more accessible
without being overwhelming. So we've established that parents should look for three things.
Clean content that aligns with biblical values, narratives that nurture both faith and critical thinking,
and genres like cozy mysteries that offer engagement without compromise. That's a perfect summary,
and I'd add, teach your teens more than what to believe, but how to critically evaluate their faith
by asking those why questions.
That's how we build strong, independent Christian thinkers.
Teaching them to question and understand
is just as vital as teaching them to believe.
Beautiful. Have you started that conversation with your teen yet?
Because it's never too early to help them think deeply about their faith.
Thanks so much for joining us today.
Thank you for having me.
