Starting point is 00:00:05 Welcome back, everyone. Today we're tackling something that affects millions of women but doesn't always get the conversation it deserves. Thinning hair. Whether it's from aging, hormones, stress, or genetics, noticing your hair isn't as full as it used to be can feel really frustrating. So we're going to talk about practical styling tricks
Starting point is 00:00:25 and product solutions that actually work. I'm here with a hair care expert who's got some fantastic insights to share. Let's jump in. Thanks for having me. I completely agree. Thinning hair can feel out of control, and that's what makes it so difficult for so many women.
Starting point is 00:00:41 The good news is there are real, actionable ways to address it, both in how we style our hair and what we put on it. Okay. So let's start with the why. What's actually happening when women's hair starts thinning as they age? Great question. Hair naturally starts thinning as we age. It's a normal part of the process,
Starting point is 00:01:00 but genetics play a huge role too. Some women are predisposed to androgenetic, which is basically when hair follicles become extra sensitive to certain hormones, this sensitivity shortens the growth phase of the hair cycle, making follicles smaller over time, which leads to thinner hair and less density overall. Mm-hmm. That makes sense. So for women dealing with this, what are some immediate styling hacks they can try at home?
Starting point is 00:01:27 Oh, there are so many, one of my favorites is the double ponytail trick that went viral on TikTok. This involves creating two ponytail, one single stacked on top of the other to give the illusion of a fuller, longer ponytail. You pull the top half of your hair into a ponytail first, then the bottom half right below it. When you fan out the top ponytail, it creates that much fuller, thicker look, super simple, but really effective. I love that. What about for women who have crown thinning specifically? Buns are your best friend there. You can position a bun right over the thin spot on your crown. Sweep your hair back,
Starting point is 00:02:02 secure it with a ponytail right on top of that thinning area and knot it into a bun. You might need some extra clips because there isn't a lot of hair there to hold everything together, but leaving your ends out for an undone look can also help create that illusion of fullness. Right, exactly. And what if the thinning is more around the hairline or temples? Then I'd suggest opting for looser, lower ponytail. Pulling your hair up into a severe high ponytail can really accentuate those thin patches around your hairline. A lower, looser ponytail allows the hair to fall more naturally.
Starting point is 00:02:37 If that still doesn't give you enough coverage, acute headband or headscarf can work wonders to disguise those areas. Those are fantastic tips. That point about disguising thin patches sets up our next piece, scalp treatments and product formulas. But first, a quick word from our sponsor. Studies show that up to half of women will experience noticeable hair loss by the age of 50 or 60,
Starting point is 00:03:00 and finding a solution that actually works can feel overwhelming. Tribello's hair helper spray combines biotin, caffeine, and castor oil. It is a lightweight, leave-in formula that is vegan, cruelty-free, and chemical-free. Tribello has a 4.8-star rating from over 40,000 customers. Learn more at tribello.com. Picking up on disguising thin patches, what kinds of scalp treatments and product formulas really help with volume? They're essential, really.
Starting point is 00:03:30 Tackling thinning hair starts from the moment you wash it. Volumeizing shampoos and conditioners give your hair the best chance of appearing full or right from the start. After washing, a hair thickening spray can wrap around those thinning strands to deliver volume and lift at the roots. You're building that foundation. What about the actual styling process? Are there techniques that help create more volume? Definitely. Blow drying your hair with a round brush naturally creates volume.
Starting point is 00:03:57 After using a heat protectant, you pull the brush up and away from the roots rather than dragging it down your hair. As it dries, you're molding your hair into place and guiding it to cover any thinning spots. Once it's dry, a little volumizing hairspray holds everything in place. I see, interesting. What about for women who want more coverage or length? Clip-in extensions are a great option. They're more affordable than salon installations, and you can do them yourself at home. You clip in a few extensions here and there to cover thinning spots and add volume.
Starting point is 00:04:29 There are also halo extensions. Those sit on your hair without glue, tape, or clips, so they're one of the least damaging types. And honestly, you can even get them in fun colors if you want to add some personality to your look. That's a fun idea. Now, for women who have thinning right at the front of their head, what would you recommend? Wiglets or hair toppers are incredibly easy solutions. These are clip-in hair pieces that add volume to the front of your head. You can try clip-in bangs or a larger piece.
Starting point is 00:05:00 If you're going to wear them often, consider getting a few different ones and coloring them to match your hair so they blend naturally. It gives you different looks to choose from. I actually had a client once who bought three different wiglets in slightly different shades and she'd rotate them based on her mood. She called it her confidence wardrobe. Ha! I love that.
Starting point is 00:05:20 A confidence wardrobe. That's perfect. What about quick fixes for those days when you don't want to mess with styling? Ah, yes, you can use makeup that matches your hair color, like eyeliner, brow pomade, or even eye shadow, directly on your scalp to fill in wide hair parts and thinning spots. Root sprays or tinted dry shampoos work great, too. A little spritz can hide even pretty extreme thinning areas. Just make sure you don't completely cover your part so it still looks natural.
Starting point is 00:05:46 You want some scalp to show through. Right. Keeping it natural looking is key. What about switching up your hair part? Can that help? Absolutely. If you've got thin areas in the front, try parting your hair on the other side where there are thin patches. You might be able to cover them completely. Switching your part can also add a little lift since your hair isn't used to laying in that direction. Adjusting some strands and securing them with cute clips or a hair scarf adds extra coverage too. In other words, repositioning your part can be a really simple fix that makes a big difference.
Starting point is 00:06:19 Have you noticed your own hair changing texture or thickness over the years? I'm curious how common that experience is for our listeners. Now, let's talk about postpartum hair loss for a moment. That seems to catch a lot of new moms off guard. It really does. Postpartum hair loss mainly happens because of changes in hormones, such as estrogen during and after pregnancy. During pregnancy, estrogen levels rise, causing hair to grow longer and thicker.
Starting point is 00:06:48 After pregnancy, estrogen levels drop, which causes a large number of hairs to enter the resting phase of hair growth. After a few months, this hair starts to shed. The good news is that it's usually temporary. But I totally understand how distressing it can be in the moment. For women with naturally curly hair, are there specific advantages in hiding-thinning areas? Oh, definitely, curly hair has natural volume you can use to your advantage. You can pull your hair up into a puff and let it fan out over your head. body and volume help camouflage thinness around the face. Filling in your edges with product
Starting point is 00:07:23 can further disguise thin areas. Curls are honestly a blessing for creating that fuller appearance. As we wrap up, what's the one thing you want women to remember about managing thinning hair? Hair thinning can be frustrating, but it doesn't have to define you. There are hair styling tips, tricks, and products that genuinely work. Whether repositioning a bun over crown thinning, trying that double ponytail, using volumizing products, or even considering extensions and wigglets, you have options. The key is finding what works for your specific situation and being proactive about it. In short, you have more control than you might think. Beautifully said. Together, we're giving women the tools they need to feel confident and beautiful again.
Starting point is 00:08:06 Thanks so much for sharing your expertise today. My pleasure. Thanks for having this important conversation.
