Starting point is 00:00:05 Welcome back, everyone. Today we're talking about something that's become really important, especially over the last few years, online 12-step meetings. Whether you're in recovery, supporting someone who is, or just curious about how virtual support works, this conversation is for you. Thanks for having me. You know, online meetings have really changed how recovery support works. They offer a level of accessibility that wasn't possible before, and I think a lot of people don't realize just how convenient and effective they can be. Right. And I think for many people, the biggest hurdle is just that first step, actually joining that first meeting. There's so much anxiety around it. Have you ever
Starting point is 00:00:49 felt nervous about joining a new group, even online? Absolutely. I mean, putting yourself out there is scary, whether it's in person or virtual. But here's the thing. Online meetings can actually help ease that social anxiety. You can participate in anonymously, you don't have the pressure of face-to-face interaction, and you can even turn off your camera if you're not comfortable. That's such an important point. The anonymity factor really does lower the barrier to entry, doesn't it? Definitely. And beyond that, online meetings connect people who might otherwise feel isolated. Folks in rural areas, people with transportation challenges, those with caregiving responsibilities or scheduling conflicts. You can access support
Starting point is 00:01:34 24 hours a day, which is huge during times of crisis when traditional meetings might not be available. Mm-hmm. That makes sense. So let's get practical for a second. How do online 12-step meetings actually work for someone who's never done this before? Great question. First off, you don't need much. Just a computer or smartphone, internet access, and some basic computer skills. The meetings themselves usually happen on platforms like Zoom or Skype or through specialized apps. And here's something people are often surprised by. You don't necessarily need to have your video on. Oh, interesting.
Starting point is 00:02:11 So what does a typical meeting look like? Online AA meetings operate similarly to in-person ones. They're typically led by a chairperson and usually last about an hour. You'll have introductions, readings from AA literature, reciting the 12 steps and 12 traditions, sharing sessions, and a closing. The structure is really familiar if you've been to face-a-a-a-liferation. if you've been to face-to-face meetings. And are there different types of meetings online, just like in-person?
Starting point is 00:02:39 Yes, you've got open speaker meetings, open discussion meetings, closed discussion meetings, and 12-step meetings. Open meetings are available to anyone interested, while closed ones are for people specifically struggling with addiction. Plus, there are specialized meetings for women, LGBTQ plus individuals, young people, newcomers. You can find a group that really fits you. I see, go on. Actually, I remember when I first heard about these specialized groups, I thought, wait, so I can attend a meeting in my pajamas at midnight? And the answer is yes, though I'd recommend at least sitting upright.
Starting point is 00:03:17 Ha, good advice. Now, speaking of accessibility, that connects to something really important, how these meetings remove barriers. We'll get into overcoming that first meeting fear in just a moment. But first, a quick word from our service. A quick word from our sponsor. So, I always tell people to remember that everyone in that virtual room has been where you are.
Starting point is 00:04:16 Research suggests that when participants are engaged and committed, online meetings can be as effective as in-person meetings in promoting sobriety. Many people find they work really well for their recovery path. That's reassuring. And the commitment piece is key, right? Showing up consistently? Exactly. Online support groups can help reduce feelings of shame or self-doubt
Starting point is 00:04:39 by connecting you with others who truly understand your struggles. In other words, you're not alone in this. There are people who get it. And remember, these meetings are free, which is important for many people in recovery. There are no dues, no fees. The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking.
Starting point is 00:04:58 I love that simplicity. So to everyone listening, if you're in a rural area, if you travel frequently, or if you just feel more comfortable starting from home, online meetings offer that flexibility. Have you thought about what kind of support structure would work best for your situation? Right, and here's a little piece of history for you. The first email AA group Lamplighters was formed in 1990 and has been meeting continuously ever since. Online recovery support has a longer history than many people realize. That's fascinating. Hybrid meetings are also becoming more common now, aren't they?
Starting point is 00:05:36 They are. Hybrid meetings let people access the same meeting either in person or virtually, which gives everyone more options to stay connected with their support network. I actually attended my first online meeting about five years ago when I was traveling for work, and it completely changed my perspective on what recovery support could look like. That personal experience really highlights the value. Any final advice for someone who's hesitating? Just show up. Seriously, joining is as simple as that. If the first group doesn't click for you, try another one.
Starting point is 00:06:11 Online meetings have schedules just like face-to-face meetings, so find one that works with your life. And remember, you're taking a brave step toward recovery. That's something to be proud of. Together, we're breaking down these barriers to access, one meeting at a time. Thanks so much for walking us through this today. My pleasure.
