Starting point is 00:00:00 I am unashamed. What about you? Welcome back to Unashame. We're still the day or two after all of our do commanders sending in all that. We're recording today. And we didn't mention this earlier when we were talking about, but mom was able to come. So that was pretty neat, Jay, to have her able to be a part of it. It was outside. Of course, she loved it. She loved getting to hear, you know, She loves hearing her boys. And, of course, Willie said, you can wake up now, okay. Jace is gone.
Starting point is 00:00:37 Like, make you, yeah, after Jay Spoke is like, you know, now you can wake up, Mom. Jay's is gone. I'm up here. But Willie went about another 20 minutes after. Oh, he did? Oh, yeah, yeah. At first I thought he was just going to make the appeal, you know, to both. Well, that's what I thought because he got up.
Starting point is 00:00:52 He did a little 20-minute gospeler, you know. Well, he was like, I don't know how I'm going to follow that. And that was my exit strategy, and I thought, well, that was nice. But I guess he did. He did. And he did really. After he said that, he said, but I'll start with what a train record was. You missed that part.
Starting point is 00:01:12 So he, he, I heard it was really good, Jace. Bax and Layla said that the whole, everything was just. All of it was great. And so that was good. Of course, you know, Willie, he best pokes at mom and gets her going. But I didn't mention that Cy, was the whole time Jace was preaching, Sa was preaching from the front row.
Starting point is 00:01:33 And, of course, you couldn't tell what he was saying probably, could you from the state? Al, we went to Bible school. They don't train you for the crazy uncle hollering at the top of his lungs while I'm trying to talk. For you tongue speakers out there in our audience and interpreters, I want you to interpret that tongue, because whatever Cy is saying,
Starting point is 00:01:54 I don't know that anybody's going to get. I ignored it the first time because I had no idea. what he was saying. It was like, I looked at him because I thought for a second he was in pain. Then I realized, no, he's got a smile on his face. And so I went on. And then it was it 20 seconds later. He just started hollering louder.
Starting point is 00:02:16 You were scratching his edge. I'll tell you that, because he was loving every minute of it. Yeah, it was all good, clean fun. I mean, just whatever. Everybody's got the crazy uncle, but nobody's quite like size. And, yeah, he's, so I tell them all the time. I said, no, Saff, if this thing works the way it's supposed to, either you or mom is at the plate, the other one's on deck, and I'm in the hole.
Starting point is 00:02:38 I'm just waiting to come up. No, he did say, one of the lines he said, Zach, was, I said something about the resurrection, and he said, hey, I'm next, Jack. But he was, like, saying it as a positive, but I think the crowd was looking bewildered. Like, should we laugh? Should we cheer? we don't really know how to respond to that. So it's been an interesting week for Lisa and I
Starting point is 00:03:01 because Anna has been looking after mom. She's been staying with us since Dad crossed over. And she's doing pretty good, but she's doing well enough to come and be a part of it. But I didn't realize how hard it is to take care of, not just one older lady, but two, because her sister, A.N. Ann is here. And A.N. Ann is 86,
Starting point is 00:03:23 but she's in pretty good health mentally and physically. but, you know, still, she gets in, she tries to take care of mom, but she's the big sister, Jay, so she'll start bossing mom around, and mom's like, quit bossing me. It's funny because it's like now there's almost like they've gotten to that place where they're little girls again, and it's been an interesting week. But I've really loved it. It gives you a chance to serve your parents in a way you didn't really know,
Starting point is 00:03:49 and we kind of went through that with dad as well. So we appreciate all you guys thinking about mom and asking about her, She's doing pretty well, which has been a blessing. So that's that. So let's get to John. Because last podcast, we talked a lot about the other and just barely got into this text. Jace reminded us of the pericles about the Holy Spirit, which are really throughout this whole passage. And it is important to understand that.
Starting point is 00:04:19 And I think, as you said, the love aspect of this is what he really zeroes in on. He does. When he gets to chapter 15, of course, this is all within kind of the introduction of, maybe introduction is a bad word, but a focus on the Holy Spirit is going to be sent from heaven to human beings, to dwell with human beings. And what's tricky to wrap your head around is that he's bringing the father and the son with him because of the nature of God. being. Right. And it's all woven around Jesus introducing a new creation to this planet, a new world within a world that's gone bad. Zach brought up talking about the paraclitus in the last podcast, this idea of
Starting point is 00:05:21 Christians or disciples of Jesus overcoming. the evil one based on Revelation 12. Which is a word he, John uses a lot in John and in first, second, third John. That overcome idea. By the blood of the lamb is Revelation 12 and the word of their testimony, which I was focusing on the missional aspect of God through human beings because we left off saying the time we're used in John 1416 that the, this counselor, this Holy Spirit, will come to you another counselor.
Starting point is 00:06:00 So obviously, and Zach may have a better way to explain that, but it's like he's taken my place to be not just alongside of you, because Jesus had limitations in that he was in a human body. The word became flesh, made his dwelling among us. well now this Holy Spirit, he uses that word, this helper, this counselor, will be in you. Yeah. I mean, but it's the same Holy Spirit that when you read Genesis 1-1, which I read on Duckleman or Sunday, in the beginning, the earth was formless and empty, and it says the Holy Spirit was hovering over the waters. Right.
Starting point is 00:06:54 And then God said, let there be light. But God creates the heavens and the earth. Holy Spirit is hovering over the waters. What's the significance of that? It was a part of creation bringing life. Yeah. Well, think this same Holy Spirit, I think this is, we're starting off very powerful. That same spirit that's hovering over the waters, which I've said many times in response
Starting point is 00:07:18 to the gospel, is still hovering over the waters because of the new creation, which I brought that up. So fast forward to this Holy Spirit being introduced, and then Peter getting up after the Holy Spirit is poured out and made available for everyone in Acts chapter 2, 1 through 4. And then Peter gets up, and he shares Jesus. First gospel sermon post Jesus' resurrection to him leaving. The Holy Spirit has been poured out.
Starting point is 00:07:51 And he shares Jesus, wonderful, sermon and the people heard it they were cut to the heart and they said what do we do and he said repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of jesus for the forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the holy spirit well where's it going it's going in you yeah and so i think when we get here and you realize that this is the new creation this is what he was pointing to in the book of John. And to me, I don't know, y'all may have others, but the two big clues to what he's revealing in John 14, 15, and 16
Starting point is 00:08:32 is when in John 7, you remember where he said, this is in verse 37, and he starts talking about this, if anyone is thirsty. This is on the feast. this was the Feast of the Tabernacles in John 7, which was, it was a festival where they kind of celebrated the waters being split at the Red Sea, and so they were empty in these waters, and it was kind of, the ceremony was revolving around this aspect of God parting the waters. And so then Jesus, not by accident,
Starting point is 00:09:19 takes that moment to say this in John 737, if anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the scriptures has said, and I want to read that scripture where it says that, streams of living water will flow from within him. Now then John clarifies this in verse 30, of chapter seven. By this, he meant the spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time, the spirit had not yet been given since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
Starting point is 00:10:07 So now, fast forward, seven chapters, and he starts talking about this, I'm leaving, I'm going to the father, but I'm going to give you this counselor to be in you and with you forever. And he says another counselor. So it's like as Jesus leaves, he then becomes the paracletus, 1st John 2, 1. In God's presence, the Father. But he pours out his spirit. Well, now that spirit no longer has limitations, which goes back to remember John 3 when John was talking.
Starting point is 00:10:46 about the spirit? Yeah. And at the end of John 3, it says, and I've read this many times, but it says in verse 34, for the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the spirit without limit. The father loves his son and has placed everything in his hand. So just think about that. These are the clues, and now we're getting... Well, even back to bolster your point about the tabernacle
Starting point is 00:11:24 or the feast of booths, or tabernacles, they call it, the water was one aspect of it, but the other part was they were living in the tents in the desert, and the whole idea by the tabernacle being added was so that God's presence would be right there with them, the idea. So even that picture you see in that was just this little glimpse of what was coming.
Starting point is 00:11:47 coming and later became the temple. But it was the same idea that they wanted God to dwell there. But then there was this distance because of they feared him and back to Mount Sinai. So all these are pictures and glimpses that Jesus now has been talking about in this whole sort of district. You bring up Mount Sinai in Exodus 24 after Moses gave the Ten Commandments in chapter 20. And then you have the book of the covenant that's given in the next. three chapters. There's the scene on Mount Sinai, which you go back to 19, and they can't even come up the mountain because God's too holy. And then something happens in chapter 24 that
Starting point is 00:12:30 it's a pointing forward to Christ in that Moses comes down and he alone meets with God. God gives him the words. He comes back down. He tells Israel what God said. And everybody's like, we're going to obey. We'll obey everything that he said. Now, just a few chapters later, they don't because they make an image of this golden calf and they end up worshipping him. But what's interesting is, is in Exodus 24, Moses constructs an altar,
Starting point is 00:12:58 and then he has a sacrifice on the altar. And so he does it at the foot of the mountain, which I always thought was interesting. Why would he do it at the foot of the mountain? He does it at the foot of the mountain because it's at the foot of the mountain that is the barrier between man
Starting point is 00:13:14 and the presence of God. To get through that barrier, there had to be a sacrifice and atoning sacrifice that was foreshadowing and pointing forward to ultimately what would be fulfilled in Jesus. And I think where this discussion gets wonky for a lot of people is that we've typically left it just at that. Like literally, like the gospel, this was what I grew up thinking, the gospel was simply about just the atonement. It was just, okay, now that's erased and that's done. Okay, good. now we can move forward. But it wasn't just the atonement,
Starting point is 00:13:47 because if you read the end of Exodus 24 at Mount Sinai, you know what it says they did at the very end of it? They had a meal with God. Yeah. So the end of it was actually presence. Like the atonement of Christ is just the entry point. You go through the atonement to the presence of God. And that is the point, I think, of the Holy Spirit coming more than anything else.
Starting point is 00:14:13 It is like the Spirit comes. into a human body when that person puts their faith in Christ Jesus. It's that repent and be baptized, Acts chapter 2, and you receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. So the repentance and the baptism, like the being born again, like this is happening. Like I'm going through that atonement process. Why? But why? So that God may dwell in me, I can now, I will be that temple.
Starting point is 00:14:39 I will be a living stone on the cornerstone of the temple. I'm glad you said that because I was going the same direction because the reason I read the John 7 you got to remember he's taking a Jewish festival this feast of the tabernacles and he's applying this concept of living water but he's doing that by introducing that this spirit is going to come from within you
Starting point is 00:15:05 but it but it says up until that time the spirit hadn't been given because he hadn't been glorified well the next catalyst or clue is when he gets to John 12 and the Passover, he then has this moment in verse 20 where it says there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship. So it's mainly we've got Jewish festivals, we got Jews, Jesus is a Jew, you have what Zach just said about the history of Exodus and the part of the Bad Sea and Mount Sinai, but still that presence of God was the point. but when the Greeks came up to worship,
Starting point is 00:15:45 well then Jesus replies at verse 23, the hour has come for the son of man to be glorified. Well, we just read John 7 that when he's glorified, this spirit's going to be made available and flow from within you, which is, and he chose to make this statement, not by accident, when some Greeks showed up, and it's at the Passover, which he's going to, He's fixed to provide atonement for sins, but he's also, what's the catalyst of him being glorified?
Starting point is 00:16:18 Well, he goes on to say, what else is going to happen when he's glorified in verse 30 of chapter 12. This voice was for your benefit, not mine. Now is the time for judgment of this world. And then he brings up the evil one. He says, now the prince of this world will be driven out. Well, don't you think it's interesting? You probably see where I'm going with this. That simultaneously, when Jesus is glorified, whatever that means, which we know what it means,
Starting point is 00:16:48 he dies, he's buried, he's raised, and then goes to the presence of God and pours out his spirit, simultaneously with the Holy Spirit being available, the presence of God being available to come from within humans, how close is that presence to God? Didn't get any closer. Well, to do that, the prince of this world has to be driven out. Yeah. Well, think about, I know this is deep, but just think about how powerful this is. When you go back to the first creation, where did it go wrong?
Starting point is 00:17:23 You know, the first two chapters, everything is great. God wants to live with humans. He's given them dominion over all these animals and creation itself. Everything's good. When he got to humans, it's very good. He actually makes Adam, and it's like, it's not. good for man to be alone. And you know since we've been looking at the nature of God why that is. Because how can you love somebody if you're all alone? Exactly. So here comes a helper.
Starting point is 00:17:53 That's what Eve was described as, you know, a completion. Made from man. Yeah, made from man. And everything's great. Look, then we have all these trees that you can eat from. They would walk along with God in the Cool of the day. I mean, you know. You also have the tree of life in the garden that will keep you a lot. It will keep this relationship forever. Yeah. You can eat this from this tree.
Starting point is 00:18:20 Literally the fountain of youth that everybody's always talking. You have it. But there's one tree, and he described it as the knowledge of good and evil. And then here comes the evil one who's lost his place because he didn't want to. He rebelled. Yeah, he did not want to surrender to his role that God created him for. And then he starts saying, oh, if you eat of that tree, you won't die. He wants them to eat that tree.
Starting point is 00:18:53 So here comes, you know, we're now in John, and he's saying, this new creation, I'm going to deal with that problem. Yeah. And he does it. He does that through us. I think this is what's interesting when you read John 7. I was thinking immediately of, well, two passages. One in Ezekiel 47, which is a picture of the temple. And the vision that the prophet had was there was water, a stream of water,
Starting point is 00:19:24 flowing out from the threshold of the door, and everything that that water touched would just, like, trees would pop up and fruit would pop up. And like, and Ezekiel says all this, all this food, it's for food and for the healing of the nations. Well, then if you get to the end of the Bible in the very last chapter, it says, then the angel, this is Revelation 22, then the angel showed me the river or the stream, if you want to use that term, of the water of life.
Starting point is 00:19:55 Streams of living water, right, John 7, bright as crystal flowing from the throne of God. Well, what's the throne of God and of the land? Well, that's the temple motif. that's the holy of the holies. That's where God's presence is at. So whatever this river is in Revelation 22, it's actually the spring of it. The springhead of the river is coming out from the very center of God's presence, and it goes through the middle of the street of the city also.
Starting point is 00:20:24 And on either side of the river, the tree of life with its 12 kinds of fruit, which is obviously talking about Israel, the 12 tribes of Israel, yielding its fruit in each month, the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. Well, that sounds a whole lot like Ezekiel 47. Oh, I'm in Ezekiel 47. I'm glad you brought that up because it was predicted. Jesus then promised it, and then it was revealed in revelation by Jesus, his revelation. But the point I was going to make about this, though, is think about this for a second.
Starting point is 00:20:58 I just saw this when you read John 7. Like when I read this, I'm thinking of God sitting on his throne away from humans and this river's coming out of him and we're all downstream of it. That's how I read Revelation 22. But when you read John 7, that's not the picture you get. It's coming from within you. It's bubbling within you. God's throne is in my body. Think about this.
Starting point is 00:21:23 His presence is in my body. So the river that's feeding the whole entire globe is actually coming from the body. of believers because that's where the Holy Spirit dwells. That's the stream of life. So when you talked about the liberation of the whole creation, which I'm so glad you said that. Because it's not just that our bodies are the temple of the spirit. In fact, if you read the scripture here,
Starting point is 00:21:47 the whole world is going to be the temple of God in the end. The whole universe is going to be the temple of God. And it's going to happen through the bodies of the redeemed believers. Oh, we're tracking and we didn't know it because that's, because look, now, since I'm so glad you took a whole section that I was fixed today. Let me add one thing to that, because when you were talking about that, I thought about what do you tell the woman at the well? Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. That's the exact picture you're describing.
Starting point is 00:22:31 That's what we tell that woman, remember the Samaritan woman. So if you're wondering why we're going down this trail, because we're fixing to read John 15 that says, I am the vine or I am the tree. You're the branches. Well, does that sound familiar? We're going back to the garden where there were two trees. One's going to keep you alive.
Starting point is 00:22:52 One's going to give you the knowledge of good and evil. And the evil one came in there and like, ooh, yeah. Because he knew based on our human weakness, which is what Romans talks about, that once we had that knowledge, because we were weak, the curiosity and the prompting of the evil one led to us choosing evil. Once they had that knowledge, well, all kinds of evil started flourishing. And so that's why the evil one, this has to be dealt with. because how are we ever going to overcome that problem? And so I'm going to introduce something I've never, I didn't read this in a book,
Starting point is 00:23:32 and I just noticed, here's why I came to this conclusion. One is why is Jesus saying, I'm the vine, you're the branches. You bet remain in me. You get apart from me. Well, it comes back to those decisions of the first humans with those two trees in the middle of the garden. Why is that a big deal? Oh, it was a huge deal.
Starting point is 00:23:52 Sure. And why does Jesus keep bringing up the evil one. I just read the first one in John 12 when he said, now is the time for me to be glorified. And by that, the prince of this world will be driven out. But when I am lifted up from the earth, we'll draw all men to myself. Well, we know how that's happening now because he's going to leave and give the Holy Spirit to people.
Starting point is 00:24:21 We're drawn together. Yeah. Heaven and Earth connected. We have a new creation. So just watch this. How many times the evil one is brought up? And there may be more. I didn't do a Greek lexicon search, but off the top of my head.
Starting point is 00:24:38 In John 844, he, remember when he's having the, the argument with the Jewish leaders, and he says, your father is the devil. You belong to the devil. John 844, and you want to carry out your father's desire. What was his desire? Get them to eat of that tree, which brought sin and death into which he's now running rampant through. He was a murder from the beginning. When he lies, he speaks his native language.
Starting point is 00:25:10 And so here's Jesus, like testifying. He's saying, can any of you prove me guilty of sin? I mean, we don't have a problem proving the evil and guilty of sin. He's like, why don't you believe in me? He who belongs to God, here's what God says. So he introduces it there. Then in 1231, is that the one I just read? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:33 I think so. Now, at his moment of glorification, the prince of this world will be driven out. Then look at 13. Is that 27? 1327. Let's see what that says. Oh, yeah. Remember when Judas took the bread?
Starting point is 00:25:51 What happened? Satan entered him. Here we got a prompting. Same thing that's happening in the garden. This is the problem. You have one of Jesus' friends betrayed it. This is the problem when you leave us up to our own devices because of our human weakness. And what was his problem?
Starting point is 00:26:10 Same problem they had at Mount Sinai. Same problem. They said they'd obey, but they didn't. They didn't. So look at 14. All you need it was 40 days. and then it's a golden calf. Look at 1430.
Starting point is 00:26:22 Look at 1430. I will not speak with you much longer. For the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me because he doesn't have sin or death. He's fixed to conquer death and he's fixed to conquer sin because he had no sin. The world must learn that I love the father and that I do exactly what my father has commanded me. that that is those are two things that didn't happen in the first creation right he said don't eat of that tree all you had to do was trust and do everything he said and everything would have been great
Starting point is 00:26:58 didn't do it and the evil one played a role in that so then look at 1611 which we haven't got there yet well just real quick because the big juxtaposition there is that the big problem is our lack of obedience but but the solution is what jesus accomplished he obeys a everything that his father said. So you're seeing Jesus is the centerpiece of the accomplishment of this. So how can we do that? Well, that relates us to 16-11. Because what was the problem with humans?
Starting point is 00:27:30 We wanted that knowledge of good and evil. The evil one seized upon that and made us not do everything, God said. So what is Jesus going to do about that? That's a problem that has to be solved. Because, okay, Jesus came down, he died, and buried, but guess what? We still sin. That's why I brought up first. Because here's the point is that this is the point of the law, by the way.
Starting point is 00:27:52 Paul said that the law was given, said that the trespass might increase. Romans chapter 5, verse 20. The law was given so that the trespass might increase. What does that mean? The law was given in part because it was to show humanity that it gave you the way. The law did give us the way. Yeah. The problem with the law is it didn't give us the means.
Starting point is 00:28:13 And so what you're leading up to here is what are the means Because we know the way is to be obedient, be like Christ was, who did it perfectly. That's the way. But we're still not going to be able to pull it off, which is why. Which is why in John 16, he says, unless I go away, verse 7, the counselor will not come. Yes. But if I go, I will send him to you. And we've already read that he'll be in you.
Starting point is 00:28:41 When he comes, he'll convict the world of sin and righteousness and judgment in regard to sin because men deny. believe in me in regard to righteousness because I'm going to the Father, but you'll have the spirit, right? So where you go, where you can see me no longer, because he's at the right hand of God. But watch this. In regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. Why's he bringing up the evil one? Because you now have the means inside of you. The evil one comes to you and accuses you and says, oh, and you're like, well, I'm weak, I'm human. but you have God's spirit. You now have the means to say,
Starting point is 00:29:23 nope, you can't accuse me that I have the spirit of Jesus inside of me who conquered sin and death. The only way to get there is through honesty and submission. It was really interesting because this morning before we came into the podcast, I have a weekly call with,
Starting point is 00:29:40 I call her my fat counselor, you know, me being the fat person, not her. But we have these conversations and she said something this morning that struck me. She said, you know what I love about you? You're always honest, even when you don't have a good week or there's reasons why in this diet that I'm on. And I told her, I said, well, Heather, why would I lie to you whenever you're here to
Starting point is 00:30:02 counsel me? Because I would just be lying to myself. And that's exactly what happens in a spiritual sense as well. If you lie to yourself and don't submit, but you keep saying, well, I keep doing the same thing I've always done and expect a different result. How is it? That's good. You can only, God's going to know.
Starting point is 00:30:21 Isn't that what the Spirit's doing though? He says, I'm going to guide you into all truth. And so a lot of this is this conviction that comes from the Spirit. But the reason why you have the means and the reason why you had the Spirit is because you are the housing God now. You are, you are part of the temple motif. And I think this is why, like I was thinking of a good title for this episode. And I was thinking about this because this is a hot topic right now
Starting point is 00:30:47 about this third temple being built at some point in Jerusalem or the Gaza Strip area. And I'm thinking, the third temple is already under construction. You are the third temple. It's being built every day. The third temple has begun, everybody. Like, what are we looking for? Like, this is the whole point of the Bible.
Starting point is 00:31:05 We watched another couple of hundred bricks just two days ago. I would change third to the word forever. You are the forever temple. There will be no more. Yeah. But I'm just getting started. You get to John 17. Look, John 17.
Starting point is 00:31:21 Vos is just getting started. 17, 14. He's now praying for his disciples and watch this prayer in 14. I have given them your word and the world has hated them for they are not of this world. What are you talking about they're not of this world? Because he's going to create a new world within the world. And he describes it anymore than I am of the world. Didn't he come into this world?
Starting point is 00:31:50 Yeah, but he came from heaven. Well, where did the spirit come from that will house, that we will house his disciples and eventually else? Same place. Which is why eventually he's going to tell Pilate, my kingdom is not of this world. So people are like, oh, say that's a later thing to happen. No, he's talking about the origin. It didn't come from this world.
Starting point is 00:32:12 Because this world, men and the evil one created a world within God's world that he then came to save and then came to solve by giving us the Holy Spirit, which then made God's presence in a world, not of his making and doing once sin and death entered. So watch verse 15 says, my prayer is not that you take them out of the world. Now this is where it gets very inspirational, but that you protect them from the evil one. Well, how is he going to do that? They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world, set them apart or sanctify them. When you look at what that word means, set apart for sacred use or made holy, set them apart. sanctify them by the truth your word is truth as you sent me into the world i have sent them into the world for them i sanctify myself that they too may be truly sanctified well how is he going to set
Starting point is 00:33:24 them apart and sanctify him he's given him his spirit a good way of breaking that down a good way of breaking that down is if you think about the word sanctification, yes, it means to be set apart, but what does that really mean? To be, like, when you read the Bible and you talk about the words like justification, sanctification, glorification, all of those are in this text, by the way. The sanctification portion is being released or freed from the power of sin. It's like that sin has a grip on you. And so, like, I have a desire. It's that Roman 7's passage when Paul's like, I want to do the right thing, but I can't. Well, that's because sin has a grip on you.
Starting point is 00:34:07 Your desires, your affections, they're distorted, they're twisted, they're indexed toward the wrong thing. And so to be sanctified means that that gets reshaped over time, and sin doesn't have that power over me. Well, why does sin have the power over me in the first place? Like, what is sin? Well, the very nature of sin, it's based in lie. When the devil speaks, the Bible says he speaks his own native tongue.
Starting point is 00:34:34 which is a lie, he lies to you, going back to Genesis, how does he trick them? He takes the truth and he twist it into a lie, particularly the lie in Genesis was that God is holding out on you. He doesn't want you to eat this because he does it. If you eat this, you'll be like him. So he took that and he just lied to them. So for me to be freed from the temptation of sin, for me to be freed from like having these disordered desires and misappropriated and misdirected affections, what that means is, is that I'm going to have to see that whatever I think is going to fulfill me is not actually true. That's a lie. And then so the healing will come when I can see reality for what it really is.
Starting point is 00:35:17 So when the Bible says that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth, he'll guide you into all truth. And by that truth, you're sanctified, his word is truth. What that means is that the Spirit is the agent of the Trinity. He's the member of the Trinity that actually will illuminate. my heart and my mind to see what is real. Like, where is real fulfillment going to come from? It's not going to come for the lust of my heart. If I'm lusting after another woman, the spirit doesn't say, don't do that, Zach, that's wrong. That's against the rules. What the spirit says is, that's not true. This is what's true. The fidelity towards your wife, that's real, that's where
Starting point is 00:35:56 real fulfillment's going to come from, a 40-year fidelity to her and to have grandkids that love you and trust you and a legacy and union and like that is true. And so over time, as I submit to the spirit, as I submit to his revelation, I am sanctified. I'm freed from the grip or the power that sin has over my life. And then one day when God, Christ comes back at the second coming and we're glorified, that's when we'll be freed from the presence of sin because at the second coming of Christ, we see him come in his glory, there won't be the potential to even believe in a lie anymore. I'm just getting started.
Starting point is 00:36:39 Because now, when you go to 1st John 2, he just described what I'm fixing to read, because now in 1st John 2, the other use of Pericles, which is why I wanted to do that review last podcast, watch how this all works. And you say how, what works? how the first creation in the beginning, God made humans, here comes the evil one, and he introduces, or he makes use of the knowledge of good and evil, to prompt humans to fall. And then here's God coming to the world, saving it through Jesus, and making right what the evil one, his contribution is.
Starting point is 00:37:30 that, to stop that from ever happening again. So that's what we're talking about. Through Jesus dying, being buried, being raised, going to the presence of God as a human in the presence of God forever, and then pouring out a spirit. So 1 John 2, you get the time frame of where Jesus is at now, because verse 1 of chapter 2 says, I write this to you so that you will not sin, because we still have this sin problem. We still have this knowledge of good and evil, and we're weak as huge. humans. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense,
Starting point is 00:38:05 Jesus Christ's righteous one. Then it goes full-scale global. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins and not only for ours, but for the sins of the whole world. So then he goes, and I'm going to skip through this, he gets into God's love, verse five, anyone who bays his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we're in him. Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. Well, how are we going to do that? He's given us His Spirit, which we'll get to.
Starting point is 00:38:41 So then I want to skip down to verse 9. And this is what Zach just said. Because here's what the Spirit does. Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in darkness. Because now this Spirit has brought light into the world. Jesus is the light of the world. We have His Spirit. You're going to see this as we continue through John.
Starting point is 00:39:05 And it says, whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there's nothing, notice those next two words, in him to make him stumble, because you have the Holy Spirit in you. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness.
Starting point is 00:39:26 He does not know where he's going because the darkness has blinded him. But here's the kicker. When he gets to verse 13, it says, I write to you fathers because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you young men. Watch this next phrase. Because you've overcome the evil one.
Starting point is 00:39:47 Now we're post, we're reading in John. Now we're post death, barrel, resurrection, post born out of the Holy Spirit. And he said, you've overcome the evil one. Look, he says it again in verse 14. I write to you, fathers, because you have known him from, from, unknown him who is from the beginning. I write to you young men because you're strong. Now, watch this. And the word of God lives in you. Why does he live? How's the word of God live in you? And I'll just cut to the chase. You're like, give me a verse that that's referring to the spirit.
Starting point is 00:40:21 Okay. Chapter 4 in verse 12 says, no one has ever seen God, but if we love one another, God lives in us. His love is made complete in us. Where are we fixed to get to in John 15? He said, I'm the tree. You're the branches. This tree is a tree of life. You see how this is working?
Starting point is 00:40:43 And then he says in verse 13 of chapter 4, we know that we live in him and he and us because he has given us his spirit. So back to 1 John 2. Watch how this works. He says, the Word of God lives in you, verse 14, and you have overcome the evil one. So to Zach's next point about the resurrection, go to chapter three of first John.
Starting point is 00:41:10 How great is the love the father has lavished on us that we should be called children of God? Remember in John 14 when he said, I'm not going to leave you at as orphans? I'm going to give you my spirit, he'll be with you forever, you'll be my children. And that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it didn't know. him. Dear friends, we are children of God. And what we will be has not yet been made known, but we know that when he appears, we shall be like him. Well, there's our new body. But we shall see him as he is. But watch what he then does. He backtracks and says the same thing. He goes
Starting point is 00:41:53 to verse four and starts talking about this sin problem. Everyone who sins breaks the law. In fact, sin is lawlessness. But watch verse 5. but you know that he appeared. Now we're going to the first time he appeared, Jesus, so that he might take away our sins, and in him is no sin. No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. And that's the problem people have with this verse.
Starting point is 00:42:20 They're like, well, wait a minute, I thought we do sin. But you have the spirit in there. And the evil ones come and say, oh, yeah, yeah. And you're like, nope, he paid for it. It's a continual forgiveness that's hard to wrap your head around, and it's a purpose that you're now illustrating. That knowledge of good and evil and you being weak no longer has that power because Jesus destroyed that power who had the power. That is the devil. So watch, though, I want to read this last verse, and then we can talk about it.
Starting point is 00:42:52 But he then goes right back to the same theme in verse 7, Dear Children, this is 1st John 3-7. Notice how the family reference here? not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous just as he is righteous. Well, that's all about the Holy Spirit. He who does what is sinful, and well, here we go again, is of the devil because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. No one who is born of God will continue to sin. And I skip forward to chapter four to share why that's true because you have the holy spirit in you the evil one comes you're like not today buddy sorry there's so much there's so much meat here like i i don't even
Starting point is 00:43:43 i had this thought i'm probably going to butcher this because this is something i have not studied but i just had this thought as this conversation is unfolded you actually started this entire podcast with what's called the hypostatic union oh boy what you're Is that a good thing or a bad thing? That's a good thing. That is an essential thing for us to understand as Christians that in Christ, that in Christ, the fullness of deity was pleased to dwell in a body, that Christ was fully God and fully man, not parts, not separate, but fully God, fully man in one union.
Starting point is 00:44:22 And when you think, when you were talking about that earlier, I was thinking, man, isn't that interesting how that hypostatic union of Christ is the precursor for like heaven and earth coming together? Because the big thing that we've always thought about, if you grew up in the church, is like heaven was out there, earth is here, heaven's where we're going one day. Instead of thinking of what the Bible teaches is no, heaven's coming here, there is going to be a new, there's going to be a fusion of heaven and earth. And Christ is, is the first fruit.
Starting point is 00:44:56 of that. And so this intermediate, not yet now state that we're in, we're in the now, we're in the now, but not yet fully there. The spirit now is coming in us. So you're seeing another type of union that's happening. How in the world can a human body house the Holy Spirit? What does it even mean? That is the question. How in the world can the human body house the spirit? Because here's why I said all that and read all that. I didn't say it. I read it. because I always struggled with people who came to me and said, why do you claim God is Lord of Heaven and Earth? Look at all the evil. Well, now I've got the answer in a quick, short answer, and I'm answering your question. Because God kicked the evil one out of the world
Starting point is 00:45:45 that we're in in the world. You say, we're in a world, a new creation, within a world of the whole creation. But in our world, within the world, Jesus kicked the evil one out. That's what happened. And you know what the evil one,
Starting point is 00:46:05 what he's trying to do? The entire work of the devil is to separate. He's trying to get you back into that world. That's why he said, don't let anybody lead you astray. He wants to split heaven and earth, and he wants to split our union with God. That is his work.
Starting point is 00:46:23 But in Christ, there is no splitting. there's only union. What was his statement, the union? Hypostatic union. So, Zach, before Al gives his comment, you need to print up a shirt that says hypostatic union member. About hyper, hypo, hypostatic.
Starting point is 00:46:44 Hypostatic union member. All right, going to that. Or, you know what that, the letters would that be, was B-Zat? Hmm. H-U-M. hypostatic union member. Hmm. So what were you going to say?
Starting point is 00:47:00 I'm sorry. I thought it was too good. No, what I was going to say was that to answer Zach's question too with a question, because you think about it, if you're in that other world, you look at this world and say, well, that's not possible. You people are crazy. You've got some spirit living in your body. Well, let me ask you this person in that world looking in our world saying you think you
Starting point is 00:47:20 figure something out. How does your spirit work in you? Exactly. You got one too. Oh, exactly. And, you know, Jesus said every time you think something before you ever do something that's bad, you thought about it before you did it. Well, what was that? That was your spirit and you.
Starting point is 00:47:36 It's a great point out. Because look, what the people in the world do, and I've done it myself. I've been stupid. Yeah. We try to divide up our body and soul and our spirits. Like, well, my body. Remember, Paul, like, man, I got this thing inside my body because he was. I'm so weak.
Starting point is 00:47:53 Yeah. But he said what we all do. you can't divide it up. That's you. That's you. That is you. And Jesus is God and the Holy Spirit. You're like, well, how does that work?
Starting point is 00:48:04 Oh, it's working. It's working. It has to work. Because Christ being God and man is the only way that we as humans could even have access to God. This had to happen. Like, there had to be like this incarnation of God for us to be able as mere humans to be connected. And I think that's the point, right? I mean, it's heavy.
Starting point is 00:48:29 It's a lot, but it's also kind of speaks to what we all feel inside. We want to be whole. We want to be connected. We want to belong. And this is the basis for all belonging. So we're out of time. We never got to the love thing. We will.
Starting point is 00:48:43 We will next time. But I was thinking about the whole time we were talking today, I think about the hat I'm wearing, for those you've been watching, I've got one of the gospel symbol hats. And I just thought about the brilliance of what the Holy Spirit did. through one of our mentors, Bill Smith, who came up with these little symbols as a ways just to show what we've been talking about.
Starting point is 00:49:01 But if you look at these symbols as the eras that we're talking about here, they're right there. I mean, that arrow coming down was so important that Jesus did come here to become a human, the hypostatic union, as Zach talked about. The cross, of course, the atonement, but then the tomb and coming forth,
Starting point is 00:49:19 this idea that you can be glorified and not have to worry about death. And then you got those last two arrows, which is where we're in now. Because he left here, he poured out the Holy Spirit, and we're just waiting for the final component. The evil one's still around. Still around.
Starting point is 00:49:34 But guess what? We've kicked him out of our world. And every day he comes to us, just like he came to Adam and E. And we're like, nope, that's been taken care of. You lost. Get back to sharing Jesus. I mean, this is what we're doing as God's representative. So, Maddie, I guess you'll cue up some just as I am.
Starting point is 00:49:54 If there's anybody out there in that other world, we're saying, come on over because this will change your life forever. So we'll pick this up next time in John 15.
