I am unashamed. What about you? He had this big, you know, hole in his heart because I hadn't told him I loved him. Yeah, he shared that on the podcast. He did. I didn't know if he was kidding or not. So after the podcast, everything was so thick with sarcasm, Joe, I didn't know who was being true. But at the end of the day, Jay's took the challenge. Well, in private, a private phone conference.

conversation. We were talking about something else. But I like sarcastically said love you cousin, but he took it as a win and then shared it on the podcast. He said he felt like it was 80% sarcasmus. Jay said, well, it was more like 90% that. I did that for a joke. That was funny. You know, it's funny. I always know who he's talking to by, like he has a voice when he's talking to there's a certain voice we're talking to you out. Like he has a personality for who he's talking to. His dad, Melissa, like, I can know who he's talking to just by his tone. Yeah, like not hearing the other person, but by hearing his tone, I know.

Was that a nice way of saying Zach has multiple personalities? Because that would make more sense to me right now. Well, he's multifaceted for sure. There's business, Zach. There's Bible Zah. There's ministry, Zach. He does have a lot of different forms, I guess, Jill. That's true. And you probably saw it, seen a lot more. So if you're just joining us, you realize that. You just came in on our conversation.

Zach, no-showed, but, ow. He didn't call me. No, he called me. He called you and said, but I got good news. I'm sending a better version of myself. That's exactly what he said. So Jill, welcome back. too unashamed. Thank you. I'm always glad to be here. So we had the ladies on a few podcasts back, Jill, and I don't know how these dropped, so that may not have even happened yet.

But I wanted you on as well because our audience loves it when you guys are here to sort of counterweight the men because they hear from us 90% of the time. So they enjoy that. And they went up doing a couple of podcasts. But you were traveling, right, because your kids are doing a... Yes. Larry Fleet deal, right? I'm an official groupie, I feel like, right now for Dash of the Band.

I should have worn my T-shirt today. You should have. You kind of got a Texas look there today. That's right. You know, just following them around. And that was actually the first show I was going to get to see on their tour. And so I was already in Atlanta. I hated because I love to join with the duck ladies.

So that was, you're proud of your kids. I'm sure all that. Zach said they did amazing. He told us about the little Jesus. song. They threw in there right in the middle of it. He said it was incredible. It's so cool. I mean, I'm so, I am. I'm super proud of them. When they sing that song, it's interesting because Max does a little line before they go into that song. And he says, you know, we're storytellers and we tell a lot of stories, but I can't not tell you the greatest story. And he says,

what makes this story so great is that it's true. And then they lead into that song, were you there when they like nailed him on the cross, put him in the grave, and then were you there when he rose up? And it's pretty powerful. The one that goes like, were you there? Yeah, yeah, I can't sing it. That's a note. Well, I can't either.

Won't you sing it, Jay's. But Jayce is willing to try, so, you know. Well, we have the Holy Spirit. I mean, a singing is biblical, sing and make music in your heart. I think that's another reason he worded it that way. because it may not be to your ears. Well, Sy is a perfect example of that. I love to sing.

Sy's going to join us at some point. Just so you know, he's going to come busting in here in a minute, Willie's style. But he is actually joining us on the podcast. I don't think we've ever had. This is almost like a band. It's me and you and Cy and Jill. And Jill.

Have we ever been together? No, not this port-out. I don't think we've ever talked. We will be breaking new ground on Unashamed today with the voices that we will have. So I'm excited about that. We always know size is going to be, you know, energetic. And then Jill is like, I said this the other day, Jill, it's like the kid's success. I told Zach, I said, the humility of watching them.

The last, maybe it was two years ago we were up there. Well, it was probably for that. I don't know how long Max has been in college. But it was before that, I think. I think he was still like a senior in high school. But he was playing at this little place kind of down the hill from where we stay when we come up to Black Mountain. And just in there was a guitar playing. I didn't even know he was there.

And he was playing. And then he was out carrying his little thing with a few tips in there. But he was just singing his songs and over there in the corner. And there's like six people in the thing, you know, in this little restaurant area. And I just thought, you know, that's just paying your dues. Like that's how you, before you can ever get on the stage or Larry Fleet or get out there, go to American Idol. and all the different stuff they've done since then. I mean, he's obviously got talent and ability,

but, you know, he's got to go play music and sing, you know, to be able to get those opportunities. So that's what I've loved about your kids. They've been doing that since they were little, I mean, young, right? Yeah, I think seven years old was about when they first started picking up an instrument and just, they just loved it. It was never one of those things we forced them to do or made them practice or anything like that.

They just really loved doing it. And so seeing them all those years, and it's funny, you talk about paying your dues. I mean, they're still doing that now. Yeah. You know, they run their own merch table. They're pulling in all their instruments. They're, you know, they're not riding on the big bus. They're driving their little truck with the trailer attached to it.

I mean, it's, it's there. They're just make, they're scrappy, but they're making it happen. So that to me is, that is when you're winning. Everybody thinks you're full of your time. to climb some mountain or whatever. But I just remember even the early days of Duck Commander and all that. I mean, I look back on it. This was it.

The journey that you're doing together and scrapping, that is you. Well, and the reason I brought that up, Jill, is that's the word I use for you. You're a scrappy lady. Because, you know, you give it back, which I love, because the dashers, I mean, let's face it, that is one hard-headed group of people. I mean, like, they're my cousins. Well, certain members.

They all got a streak in them, though, don't they, Jill? I mean, they do. You've got to learn to jump in there quick, or you just, you know, you just get. It all, it all goes back to our childhood ale and all the aunts and uncles and it was just one huge argument every day. Oh, my goodness. And when Jan and Gordon would come and see us, because they would come for like a few days, like at Thanksgiving or Christmas every year.

And I mean, the argument started as soon as they hit the door. It was usually biblical. And sometimes it was an argument like we're saying it was all bad. It was like everybody was excited about some new thing they had just learned. So a lot of times it was just that kind of stuff. But it always wound up, usually with other uncles coming in. My uncle Harold would come in and he'd have his take. and then they get to going back and forth.

Alliances would form. That's right. Yeah, but it would be different. Be different people every time. To trip. Yeah, who's taking a side. There was a podcast happening long before this podcast happened. It just wasn't being.

And it was a little bit of like side duck call room podcasting, what we do here. It was a little bit of all that stuff kind of rolled in. With a little more energy, even than size podcast. I mean, boy, they would make. points. I mean, voices would be raised. I was going to say, you put Jan in a room and you're talking about the Bible and she's going to get passionate. And then Gordon can never let anything go. So, you know, he's every statement that's made, it's the next hook for the next thing with Gordon. That's the way you always say. He can't just let something go. If somebody says like an offhanded comment,

oh, we're going to deal with that. We're going to talk about that. Isn't it you know his way he does? Isn't it? And so there's a little bit of that sprinkle through all the kids. I always thought Grant is the hardest line to me, but Zach's pretty brutal. And then Melissa can go either way. She's like an alliance one way or the other. See, I was always closest to Melissa. I mean, she lived with us for a few months there or whatever.

And we offered, and Missy was like, why are you making this offer? And I was like, because I really love her. I said, just, it was something about her. Because she went to college here, and so, like, she was spent a lot more time with us probably than any of the cause. But what I was going to say is, I don't know if you knew this, during duck season, so when Zach, he, you know, because deep down I've known, he's always wanted to be like a man's man. Yeah, he told about some fishing trip he went with. He thought wearing the work boots would do it for, James. Yeah.

He's going to look good. They couldn't even catch any fish, you know, for two or three days, which was embarrassing. I'm like, but anyway, so ice storms as that came, and he brought bear, and he hunted with us. And how old's bear? 17, 18, 17, yeah. Yeah. And so somewhere in those couple days, because, you know, when the electricity goes out and there's an ice storm, and you just, you kind of see the soul of a man.

We're out there in conditions that are rough. And your one tree falling away from not being here anymore. Exactly. So we just had a really good conversation one day because Zach got, I think, a little bit overwhelmed because he had to take a trip to Walmart after two or three days. I mean, he braved the roads to go to Walmart. He does not like to be. Cage did. Let me just tell y'all. He starts getting panicky.

I don't know if we ever discussed that argument, but, because I was like, well, where's Zach? And he's like, oh, he had, because I went to go look for a downed-up, which I found, but it took me an hour. And when I got back, Zach and Jay were gone.

And I said, what happened? And I said, I think they just, they just got tired of it. Because we had been there for days, and it was cold, no shower. They're all staying in the dark in there. They had to build a fire. just to see each of them. And whoever I was getting this information from Burley, he said, was Zach said he just felt the need to go to Walmart.

Just a glimpse of civilization. Did he ever come back? Was that it? I never saw him again. Last I heard he was headed to Walmart, and the next time I saw him was like a week later via Zoom podcast. So it just didn't go well for him, I guess. He just had to get out.

He said it was a bonding moment for he and Barry. He felt good about that. Oh, I did. And then you and, you and, I told this whole story because I asked him a question. I haven't shared this. Oh, here we go. And I said, because I was surprised at how transparent Bear was. Now, you know, it's different when, I mean, you're his mom.

So I may be, this may not be his normal personality. But, I mean, the boy just buried his soul. And he asked really good questions. And we, I mean, what do you do in a duck blind when you're just sitting there? And I thought I was just really impressed with him. But I had to ask him. I said, okay, let me, you've been on the earth 17 years. I said, so when you got in trouble, who were you most scared of, your mom or your dad?

I mean, I was being nosy, and I hope I can share this. Without hesitation. He said, you don't mess with my mom. He's right. He's true. We were talking about this the other day, and this is the truth. Here's the thing about me. It takes me a while to get there.

I'm pretty patient. It takes me a while to get there. I can hang. I can, but when you get me there, Katie bar the door, because I'm not holding anything back. And that's true. That is so funny. said that because that's what he described.

He said, you know, she's loving, she's patient. He said, there's a point where the volcano erupts and you don't want to be anywhere around. And is it fair to say, Jill, that bear out of all your children probably has gotten you there more than any of the five? Is that fair or is there somebody else's presses more? Well, you know, we kind of had a moment this morning. So it just so happens that I'm going to say. Yes, to that question.

Me just knowing your kids the way I do. It seems like Bear has had a lot of opportunity. Well, I only had one in-depth conversation, but Jill, I'm telling you that y'all did something right with that boy. And we're all on that journey. I remember being 17, but deep down, you just can't make up the things he said. I think he's got a good, good heart. He does. He's an awesome kid.

His passion, I'm just, I'm excited to see what God's going to do with him. But he's a great kid. Something great. I definitely think that myself, because he's also very bold. And you don't see that a lot in young people. He does not shy away from his opinions, his politics, all of it. And he'll talk about it with anybody and everybody. And you just don't see that very often in a teenage kid.

So I've told Zach before, Jill. I love all your kids for all different reasons. Of course, Max is my favorite because he's an LSU fan, of course. But I love them all. And they all just have something unique. And now you guys are kind of getting to do it the fifth time through with little Ruth, which is, and she's just, you know, her whole story and everything about that. And, of course, Jason, Missy have a similar thing, not exactly the same, but similar again,

where you get this chance later in life to be a blessing that you, didn't know, or get a blessing, I guess, to you didn't know you would ever get. I mean, you're just thinking grandkids or whatever. And so both of y'all have jumped into situations that just, you know, for me sitting here with you, walking alongside you, I mean, it's very humbling what you guys have done and very moving to those of us, you know, around you too. So it's not easy, but it's good, right? Very, very good. We can't imagine life without Little Ruthie. Exactly. Well, Missy shared that story last time she was on.

She was like about when God knocks on your door and it's like, here you go. And her response, which was very transparent, and I hadn't ever heard her share that. But she was like, are you sure? I mean, is there not someone else who can answer? Because it is an emotional roller coaster. but I think when you're out there talking about we're all made in the image of God and you realize this problem in our society where there are kids being born with no one to fight for them. Right.

And it just, there's something life-changing about being involved in that process. Yeah. Well, and we've been, Jill, just so you know, we've been studying in First John, and we're in the section, we're about to hit into this section about the love of God, but we've been talking about this very thing about what does, you know,

what does faith look like? How can you tell? You know, how do you know the spirit of God is in people? And what are the things you see? That's kind of the cycle that John keeps circling through as he gets here.

And I think, Jay, is the last time, I was trying to think where we left off. It's hard to know, Al. It is hard to know. I think we read the last podcast, I think we did 16 through 20, which was this idea, which made me think about it when y'all were talking about, that love is action, right? He said, that's what it looks like. And he even talks about helping those who can't help themselves or seeing someone in need,

you know, what's your response to that, which is kind of what you guys were just describing. And then at the end of the section of verse 24, because to get us to chapter 4, it says, those who obey his commands live in him and he and them. And this is how we know that he lives in us. That's where we talked about last time, James. Remember you were talking about the in us and in him? We know it by the spirit he gave us. And who literally lives inside of us and bears this fruit.

And then the fruit comes out through us. And so he's saying, this is how you know who people are, is the fruit you see from their life, right? And that's exactly what we want to do. that becomes in and of itself its own test. Well, I thought about, before we even get into that, that verse 19 and 20, I thought about this this past weekend for whatever reason.

But when it says this thing, because he calls us children, which is kind of how he starts the whole chapter. He's done that multiple time. Yeah, and he's like, that is what we are, you know, children of God. It starts all the way back in 28 of chapter 2, and now dear children continue in him.

And then he's like, how great is the love, the father's lavished on us that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are. And so here again, he brings, Dear Children in verse 18 of chapter 3, Dear children, let us not love with words or tumble with actions.

And then it says, this then is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence, whenever our hearts condemn us, for God is greater than our hearts. He knows everything. So I saw that word greater because he's going to say that two more times

in the rest of the book. The other one is, I think, the most probably famous verse in 1, John, where it says the one in us is greater than the one that's in the world? Yeah. Where exactly is that? That's in verse 4 of chapter 4. Yeah.

Then he says it somewhere else in chapter 5. He says, this is how God is greater. I can look it up real quick. Verse 9 of 1 John 5. Yeah, that's it. And the water and the blood, and these three agree. If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater. Or this is the testimony of God that he.

He has been born concerning his son. And I guess in my mind I was thinking we were talking about our kids and having this new one. And I know y'all have had the same experience with Ruth. But I just remember how Matthew flowed. And this is the way I thought. When Jesus was going to be born, there's a couple of pastors that he's going to be great. And I guess I was looking at that word this. he's making a point saying he's greater than our hearts

because we're condemning ourselves and why? Well, we talked about what that word rest meant in the last podcast. Remember, the idea was it wasn't rest like we're on some kind of supernatural vacation. It's rest in the fact we don't have to try to do this ourselves. Yeah. You know, that's what the rest is from

So it's glad to have you back, So you've been over there, you've been yelling at the duck call room guys? Yeah, yeah, we've done our podcast and run a little over. So before we get back to this text, because we were talking about greater, and you walked in, Jason, like Jay said, it was a sign. But there was a last night whenever, because you're living now close to our neighborhood, temporarily. And so Anna was coming by with Mom to come to my house,

and I guess they saw you out there, whatever, is they stopped. No, no, no, she just stopped coming in. Okay. I said, you know, I got Kay out here. And you hadn't seen Mom in a minute. No, I ain't seen her for quite a while. So she snapped up a picture of you guys, and it just, I thought it was really pretty

because you're holding Mom's hand. No, no. Yeah. I hadn't seen her for her, and I told her, I said, darling, you're actually looking pretty good there, Kay. She is. And she said, well, I'm doing all right. You know, and I said, well, you know, she said something else.

I can't remember what was it. It has to do with the, oh, yeah. She said, well, I got to be real careful. I fall. And I said, well, Kay, look, we're all doing that. I said, everybody around this joint is getting old. You know, I said, so, yeah, I've got to be careful. Christine's got to be careful.

Well, it was neat. I just thought it was good because, you know, all through the show, we talked about your relationship with mom and dad, and you were always the third wheel and the... Well, I've been with them. You dated Mom just like Dad, except, you know, you weren't with Mom, but you were with them. Yeah.

Yeah, the whole time. Actually, you know, Kay was 14 when Phil started dating her. I was with her, and like when they went on the first date, I'd never forget it. Mama said, you're going with them, and Phil said, what? She said, mom, I'm going on a date for crying out loud. I think that shows you the granny new feel.

Yeah, she said, hey, you're going to be. I wish you to hug around. Maybe I wouldn't have come so soon, so, you know. Somewhere along the line they ditched you because then I came into the picture. See, if that would have happened, we wouldn't even be here under my regime because I wouldn't let any of my kids date until they were 16. Well, there's a, in the movie, that's right, in the movie, they show that scene, not probably exactly like it could happen, but where you're there is the third wheel,

which I thought was really good. And Jay's, I saw, we were filming the movie about Lisa and I, and the director was here a couple days ago, and she showed me a little clip of a scene where I come in, I'm lying. This is during my particle, you know, some deal, and I'm lying, but Jay's knows, and I didn't know that, I forgot this was in the script. So as I just come in, I'm like, Dad's questioning me about where I've been. I'm lying, you know, about it. And as I'm walking away, Jay's comes up and he says, that's not where you were.

And I looked at him, I gave him light to lunch. Don't make me. And so it was so much. In fact, I was telling the director, I said, in real life, I would have grabbed him out of the throat probably and threatened him. I summed up about a five-year period of my life. That process repeated itself. Well, no, because with your dad and all that during the years that he was running while, you know, y'all had a pretty scary life.

Oh, we did. You think? Yeah, yeah. Because Kay felt better when I was with him, but that didn't change nothing. All it did was put me in a bad situation. Exactly. Which, again, I thought they did a good job in the movie of showing you in that spot. And it was, that's a hard spot to be.

And Jason was done a hard spot with me, because when somebody's lying, which is right back to this text, when somebody's lying and not living right and trying to cover it up, and you know better, but other people are hoodwinked. That's a hard place to be, you know?

To me, it was kind of like, because you love the person. It's like now me trying to convince somebody there's a God. And you're not like, why would I make this up? I mean, look around. I mean, that's the way I felt during that time, because I'd go to my mom and dad and say, look, as soon as he,

gets out of your presence. Every other word is foul. They're buying multiple drinks. They're talking about doing things with women that I know are not right. And they just wouldn't believe it. And it just was so frustrating to me. Well, no, no, because I tell people all the time when they ask. I said, look, I said, you're not fooling anybody.

Yeah, well, he was fooling mom and dad. And I said, you think you're getting away with all this. stuff. It will come. And I said, hey, you're not. I said, most people know. Okay. And I said, and the one up there, he sees everything because he's everywhere.

Exactly. Well, maybe that's why I would say, because you know what they do to snitches in prison now? They get stitches. Well, no, yeah. And that's what was happening to me. Well, no. I was like, he's locked up under the control of the evil. And every time I snitch, I was abusing.

I get a beating from him. You are your friends. I know. My friends would beat him too. No, it was a bad deal. That's why I've had to apologize. But look, here's the thing. You're right about one thing.

Here's the way I put it when I tell this part of my life is when you're a double secret agent, sooner or later you've got to pick a side because it gets to the point where you can't hide anymore. Well, here's the thing about lying. You lie so much, you forget what you said. That's right. And you, because when you said, I asked you, where was that? And you said 1st John 3, 18. Yeah.

That's a profound statement right here. My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. Yeah. That's exactly where we were. That's a profound statement. That's right. Honesty. You know what?

You know what I found? Y'all going to find this interesting. So somewhere in Zach not coming and me not sure if we were going to have the podcast, then we had it an hour after we were supposed to. Somewhere in that process, I'm blaming it all on y'all, because that's another thing we do when sin happens. You blame. You blame everybody.

I'm getting that from Adam. You remember? I mean, he's quoting poetry. Oh, she's flush of my flesh, bones of my bones. And then as soon as that sin happened, what? What the woman you gave me Look at this woman. Everything was fine.

I didn't want her. Me, you, and the animals, we were going through singing kumbaya. You took one of my ribs. I mean, like, this is what I get. You brought her in there.

And look, I don't know what happened. Well, no, because me and the Lord have had a lot of talk about that with me and women. Because I said,

hey, look, it's your fault. Okay, you made her. And he made you so irresistible. He made me and put it in me. He made you so irresist. He gave her red hair to show you a sign right there.

Yeah, she's mean. Danger. Yeah, she's mean. I do think it's important to note here, gentlemen, that God does say it, before sin existed, I don't you remember this, before sin was in the world, God said it, he said the only thing he said that wasn't good was that it's not good for man to be alone. True. Everything he created was good.

Everything was good. But before sin existed, he said, no, it's not good for man to be alone. Which is the truth part. Bear was right. We've concluded now that Jill is a volcano. But don't be careful when you start talking about women. No, no. She can be pushed to a point.

No, no. I've always said, what about you? In fact, you know, there's, But you and who? And I said, hey, look, I would rather fight 10 men than one woman. I said, because, hey, I've got a change to survive the 10 men. Hey, shit with arms?

You're in the United States Army. You're used to fighting men. Look, I got hijacked here. So I had to borrow my dad's Bible because I forgot my Bible with all the distraction. So I get it. She's blaming us for that too. I turned to the first John. three and four, because he writes in his Bible a lot underlines.

Look, he just has one word above the caption summing up. Uh-oh. First John, two, and three. You see what it is? Sin. He put sin with an exclamation point. And I thought, yep, somewhere in there, I'm getting you on this, Phil. Because what we just read, here was the point I was making, is that our hearts do condemn us.

that we got a lot of sin going on. And remember, this whole context, to go back to my life, which we were talking about earlier, it's not just a sin. We talk about that word, and you mentioned, Jay's, in the Greek, it's practicing sin. In other words, it's living the life and giving into the flesh. That's what we're talking about.

It's like you use the pig pen as an example. Yeah, yeah. You're wallowing in it. Exactly. So just so you know, that's what we're. we're talking about. Go ahead. Well, I was going to say that because this is hard to wrap your head around because he's like, well, in him, there's no sin. Right. who's doing right whoever's doing what's right whoever's sinning they're of the devil I mean he's making these blanket statements and you remember he said if you claim to be without sin earlier he said you're a liar you're a liar true's not in you're a liar your lips are moving but he said I write this so you won't sin you're like but what if I do

and so I think we just we're going we read a verse and we're like oh, oh, oh, oh. And so I think when he gets down to this part, and it's like when he says God is greater than our hearts. People in our hearts. And he used that word condemn, which I did a little Google search on it. It's only mentioned three or four times.

And the most famous one in my mind is Romans 8-1 because it says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. I'm like, ooh. No, no, no. And that's another, in truth, that's their profound statement. Oh, is it ever? Okay, because we're prone to sin. Yeah, yeah.

Okay, to. Well, we're born in a sinful world. I mean, and just the repercussions of that. Yeah. Everyone's contributing to what's happened in the world. And they're just passing it on. We talked about it before we started their podcast. that God put it, because I was talking to Abed, about I've been watching movies of Native Americans.

Most people don't realize the Native American was always religious. Yeah. They was always talking about, you know, Mother Earth, give us everything. The Great Spirit in the sky. Yeah. Yeah. So people don't realize, you know, God put that in our hearts. Yeah, that's good point.

Yeah, I agree. Well, I think you just be in here looking around, how is this happening? You start asking questions. No matter what your cultural setting is or was, because we're talking about now going back thousands of years, some of the things you're describing, there's always that question about why am I here? What am I doing? Where am I going? Is there something beyond? Is there why dad used to always say in the context you're talking about, he would say, why would you sneak into someplace and start?

steal something and do it at night, stealthily. Don't you know? Because you know it's wrong. That's exactly right. I mean, that sin has always been that evident and present in any culture because we're humans. Well, especially when... I think that's why he says, I think that's why in verse 21, he says, beloved, if our

heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God. To your point side, you know, you know when you know. when you know you're not living right you know. Well, no, because going back to the Native American, okay. You know, when they made their raids on other tribes, it was always at night. Well, that's like with us, okay. Well, that might have just been so they wouldn't see you coming. Well, yeah, but no, they knew they was up to no good.

The Bible says bad things happen at night. It says it all the time. No, no, like my mother told me, okay, you know, when I was a teenager, She said, here's the thing. The people you run with, you're going to be known by how they are. Yeah. It's a great point.

That's, again, about the truth. Okay, and always when I think about it, you know, Jesus came down full of two things. The truth and grace. Grace and truth. Yeah, yeah. Which is what this passage is about. And you're right about who you run with,

because Jason said this many times on the podcast when he came to Christ, he realized he needed to be lone wolf McQuaid for a while. No, no. This is a compliment. For a period you had to do it. This is a compliment to you. As a teenager, you was weird.

Yeah, in a good way. No, no, and that ain't good way. So I got news for you. He's still weird. No, no, yeah, but I'm just saying. But you know what's funny? When you told your friends, you didn't have sex until you was married.

Yeah. They call you a liar. They call me a lot of things. Oh, yeah, but I'm saying, and the truth was you didn't. I didn't. Here's the thing that was jealous of you. That's what the bottom line was. Okay, you had your standard, which was Jesus's standard.

Yeah. Okay, and they didn't. Yeah, at the time, it didn't seem as confident to Jill's point. I didn't seem as confident because they were like, like, oh, that's the dumbest thing. That's the craziest thing. But I wanted to bring up bear, Jill, because I asked him, I was like, do you go to a public high school or, you know, Christian school? He said, oh, I go to public school.

And I said, so how many Jesus loving people have you encountered there? And I'm not talking about playing church. And he said, well, I got one. I was like, I would have gave you this. Well, that's what I said, so. I said, well, bear, look at the good side. I said, you have one more than I did. That's right.

And that was true. I think it's the hardest place to live like Jesus because you're going to be alone. Well, I've told this before, but I remember one of the times when I was in my period of time when I was not, I was with the wrong crowd. But thinking because I was fake churching it that I was better than they were. That shows you how pride works. Which is normal. Exactly. And so here's what happened one time.

I was so offended. So my best friend, you know, who is also my best compatriot in this terrible lifestyle, his mom calls my mom and says, I'm not sure it's good that our sons are hanging out and running together because she tells mom that I'm a bad influence on him. So mom tells me this, well, I'm so offended because I was like, well, wait, and in my mind, I'm like, I'm a fake Christian. that makes me better than him. He's not even trying to fake it.

I mean, that's how convoluted you can get. No, that's how sick you get with me. This goes back to my point about greatness. This was where I was trying to... I was getting you back there. I knew you had. Well, I was trying, I really think this is profound. Because deep down, we all want to be great.

Yeah. Look, just think of our world. I mean, think about the people's names who put great Alexander. The Great. Even Herod, in this story, was called Herod the Great. We want greatness. All the sports I do, the card playing, competition. Oh, it's all about greatness. And I've seen men, and I've been a part of it, we'll sit around for two hours and argue about who was the greatest team of all the time. Who is the greatest college team? Because I'm putting up Burrow and LSU. These Indiana fans are trying to say this team is better. I look at the staff. Come on, man.

The fact that I'm devoting this much time to this shows you we have a problem in our own heart. We want to be the greatest. And you say, well, how do we determine that? Because deep down, we all want to be known. Just think of like social media now. Everybody's dream now, their dream job is just to get on some kind of social media apparatus. And become known. And they'll pay you to do it.

If you ask at least two of my grandkids, what do you want to be when you grow up? They say YouTube influencer. Well, exactly. My other two points, because this is about identity, and everybody wants to be loved. Everybody wants to be loved. You walk in a room, you want people to say,

oh, I love this. So this is what we pursue. And everybody wants to be fearless. If you can be or secure, You want to be unafraid, know what you're doing. And to me, that defines greatness. If you're known and if you're loved and you're confident, you're fearless. Well, you've made it.

You're the greatest. Yeah, but the point about that is, okay, is that when you get talking religion, you know, the whole world is looking for something. And they don't even have no idea what they're looking for and what they're looking for is God. Because they've got the thing about being the greatest, all this stuff, you know, and you always fall short because we're human and we live in a sinful world. Yeah.

Which is why we're not at rest. Yeah. Go ahead. Yes. I was going to say the things that you mentioned, Jay, something is so good. Like, we want to be great. We want to be known. And we want to be loved.

which are all the things, or we want to be confident, that confidence, which are all the things that we actually get in Christ alone. Like we become great because he's greater. That's where I was heading. And so we get fullness of love. And the confidence that Christ offers, I mean, it blows this faux confidence out of the water. We live in this culture that talks about be confident, be confident. And what they mean is just act like you've got it together.

Yeah. When confidence in Christ is less, you can be weak, you can be at your lowest, you can be falling completely apart and be confident in Christ because of his blood. Like, that's amazing. Well, no, no. That's the greatest part of why when you asked me, who's the greatest? Okay, because Jesus is, that's why I follow him because, hey, look,

he gives me his greatness. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Well, look, I want to give some Bible here, because I was making this point about Matthew. I thought it was early in Matthew, but Luke 1 is where it says when Jesus is born, he's going to be great.

Yeah. That's what it says. And because it just, we're so consumed, even our whole political party on the right is make America great again. I mean, that word great, look, It's appealing to everyone. So you think about what Jesus did and take, as you go along with Matthew, he gives the greatest constitution for spiritual people in the sermon on the Mount.

Correct. So it's not, and the disciples are sitting there listening, probably taking notes. I know Matthew was because he wrote it down. And you're like, all that, you want to know what greatness is, and he just like turns it upside down. I'm not talking about don't kill anybody. Don't even be mad at them. And look, if they want to do you wrong, you know, let them do you.

you wrong and love them, even if they're your enemies, all these kind of things. Strikes you in the face, turn the other people. Then he goes through all these parables as you move along, and he does all these miracles. You get all the way to Matthew 18, so they've seen all this happen. So you're thinking, okay, this guy is, he's great. And listen to this question. This is Matthew 18, verse one. I know what it is.

At that time, the disciples came to Jesus. So you know they've been talking. Oh, yeah. Oh, this guy. Talking amongst themselves. Let's see. What can we ask him? And listen to this question, and they asked,

who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? Can you hear the sigh from Jesus in the moment? It's not in the scripture. They're not talking about him. They're not saying. Oh, obviously, he's the king. No, no, but see, that goes back to him. It had to be a great.

He is the greatest because of a simple, reason. Yeah, but they weren't getting it. He served. He came to serve. This is the king of kings and the Lord of Lord for crying out loud. But my point is, look, when you read that verse

if our hearts don't condemn us, this is an example of your hearts trying to condemn you. You've seen all this, heard all the sermons, all the miracles. He's right in front of your face, and you go to him. And look, this is documented other places. Remember, after

you wash their feet, this is right for dies. And guess what happens? An argument breaks out on who's the greatest. Who's the greatest? Look, even to a point where another story, they go get their mom of all people and say, go ask him if we can sit at the right and the left. Y'all will be at your right hand here. Which is why I don't know when Jesus called him Sons of Thunder if that was a joke or if he should call him Mama's Boys or what, but it was pretty pretty bad. I ain't getting my mom to go ask that. It's embarrassing. But even me saying that makes me say that, oh, I think I'm better than that. No, I'm not saying that.

But I said all that to say, of all things, it gives you the proper context on why he looked around and got a toddler. Just think about this. After all this has happened, you have the gall to come up and say, who's the greatest? And so he's like, okay, you can read his mind in this moment. And he gets a little kid and has the child, little child, stand up among them. And he said, I'll tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

And I think all this children language John is using like God is. lavished us with this love. We are the children of God. You got to quit thinking, I'm the greatest. I'm the greatest. How can I be great? Because you even see it in the religious world. People are like, well, our church is better than you because we had 2,100 meet three services.

We had 12 services on these two. You know, we have whatever. And I'm like, missed the whole point. Get the little child. And we do that quite frequently. Yeah. Yeah. We think of ourselves more highly than we all.

No, no, because if you asked, okay, who's the greatest, your greatest leader or your greatest mentor? And it always comes to one thing. There's a God. You're not him. What have you watched that man do? I've watched him serve his whole life. It's always, it's never about him. Yeah.

It's always about those around him. Yeah. Well, that's why, Jill and I were bearing our souls about this, you know, taking a kid that someone else has given birth to. Right. Because you're the living out, this illustration, Jesus just said. This whole chapter is about protecting the one kid. You know, he goes on to talk about the parable of the lost sheep in the context of having that kid in front of them. It's like, this is what you do.

If 99 of them are saved, but there's one, we're going to get this kid. it. And we got to participate in that. And I think that's why it's been so revolutionary in our life about humbling us. And that's why the Bible says we are adopted as sons. I mean, if you think about the whole anonymity of Christ coming as a baby, 30 years, we don't know anything about him. We got one scene from his life. You're talking about humble. I mean, humble beginnings. Then he does the three-year ministry is doing amazing things. But as a part of doing all those things, he keeps pointing back to the father. Remember he said, It's glory to the father, glory to the father.

It's always. Always, he sent me. Was the fact that the creator of the universe would become a kid? Yeah. Yeah. It's thought provoking. Yeah. I think that's why even 1st John 3, the way it starts, see, see what kind of love the

father has given to us that we should be called children of God and so we are. It's that like, like think about it. Like, remember, like, look, like you are. a child of God. He's not saying, see, you are great. He's saying, no, see, you are a child of God. Yeah. Well, Jesus is always, you know, because he even said it,

suffering and all the kids come to me. Right. It's just, and that's one of the things. That's why a woman gives birth to a child. That's one of the wildest mysteries of life. Did you watch that happen? No. I ain't strong enough to watch that happen, okay?

I'm really not. But look, I look, and that's always amazed me, especially when you think about, okay, she's got twins. Yeah. How does the woman's body make room for that for crying out loud and still functioned? Dad said it's the most frightening thing he ever witnessed in his life. I watched all three of them, and I had one word. wow

no no I couldn't do it okay because I would have passed out from the blood and everything else okay but I'm just saying

going back to it that's why Jesus is the greatest okay when you look at him and I always go people don't realize okay

they don't look at him as a man yeah Jesus was a man a man for crying out and I'm looking at what he did. Born of a woman. Yeah. Born of a woman.

And hey, that was a miracle in itself. Okay. Because there was no sex involved. We're out of time, side. But I will say this when to in response to why, you know, my dad puts sin at the top of this. We know what our problem is. We have a sin problem. And we do have trouble condemning ourselves.

And there is an evil one out there who's contributing to all this. And God gets blamed for all the bad stuff he's doing. And all the mistakes that happen after you're born that we do, that's why in this framework, he's talking about being born again. Reborn. I was waiting for you to get there. And that's how we become children. And that's where the humility comes from and the rest that comes in Christ.
