I am unashamed. What about you? Welcome back to the unashamed podcast. For those of you watching today, because some are listening, some are watching. I am in a pastor's office in St. Augustine, Florida. It's the turning point at Calvary Church, which I'm speaking here tomorrow night, Jay's at a beast feast. They're still doing those, Al, I thought. There's a thousand men. He showed me the setup.

They got a spillover crowd. You got a few beasts behind you. There's a ram if you're not watching. There's a pin tail behind you. There's a massive water buffalo coming out of the wall in front of me that you guys can't see on camera. But, Jace, you would love this guy. This is the pastures like a study, I guess. And there are some, like, there's a cross and a crown of thorns and, you know, things to let you know you're in a

church office, but the man likes to kill large animals and he apparently likes pintails because he has two sprigs and a pintail hen on the wall here in the, uh, in this little, uh, taxidermy shop. Tell, uh, tell the pastor that, uh, OJ says never mounted an animal. I actually had this conversation yesterday to an 11 year old boy. His dad was driving. driving me. I was in a place, Zach, a little place called North Carolina. I heard about it. I spoke twice at a church for Father's Day. You weren't too far from me, Jace. You were in, I want to say, Winston-Salem, High Point, Greensboro, one of those areas. I was in Greensboro. And I forgive you for not coming because we had something that I dubbed yesterday that might go viral.

because we had one service and I don't want to get them in trouble but the place held 1,500 and they said there was 1,900 and something in there. Where were they? They said, oh, we had a spillover place. Well, then the second service, that was like 1,300.

So we had a little room there. But then they were like, whatever you call it. What's the word, Maddie? you film it and other groups of people are watching it. They were streaming it to four or five of their sister campuses. And one of them was in Spanish. So don't you know they had a hard time figuring out what in the world is this bearded guy talking about?

But the viral... Did you try to launch into some of your Spanish? Do you know any Spanish? Oh, I did. I did a little bit on the Spanish. I said, well, I know two, because they told me that. I said, so welcome y'all. I was welcome. Happy Father's Day. Welcome our Spanish listeners. I forgot to do this on the second one, but I did it on the first one. Did you say, hol-up? That means a lot. I said, I know two Spanish words for you, Patoos. And then I told the story about when Phil and I went to Mexico with a couple of duckmen trainees.

and we hunted ducks and we filmed it. I think it was called Duck Men South. But look, all we did, this is a true story with a slight embellishment. All we would do is point and say, Patos. And so the first half a dozen times we did that, which Patos in Spanish means ducks. Ducks. They just like,

looked at us with a bewildered look. But we ran up on a guy. We said, patos, and he pointed. And we could barely see a body of water down there. That was actually the best hunt we had. So anyway, the slogan I dubbed was traffic jams for Jesus. Because all the ministry team, they were like, we're going to be running late on the second one because there's the traffic.

They came to me kind of like in that spirit. And I was like, this is good, this is good. And they were looking at it. And they were like, what are you talking about? I said, traffic jams for Jesus. That's a good problem when you have thousands of people trying to pour into a building to hear about Jesus. But. Jason, let me ask you something before you move on.

Was that previous trip, was that the trip that the guy walked into dad's hotel room? That wasn't in Mexico. That was in a place called Idaho, which... That's one of the greatest stories ever. Have we ever told that on the podcast? I don't know that we have. It was so good. I remember when Dad used to tell.

I'll give you the short version, because I've got to get back on this, why I've never mounted an animal. I've never mounted an animal. That was where we were going, so bookmarked that. I'll remember that. We haven't seen each other in days, so we have all these short ones.

Yeah, I know. It's been a minute. But that story, what was the trip before? That was the video before. We were duck men west. Boy, Zach, they had some creative marketing ideas back in those days. Back in the day. We call that on the nose and the business. This story is worth retelling.

It's one of my favorites. I'm laughing. We're somewhere. Because it has a visual that's the real pal. for the story. We had actually hunted in Hagerman, Idaho, but we were, I think, on the way there, and Phil just one night, you know,

we were back then, we don't fly, you just get in a vehicle and you go, Washington State. I mean, we just, and there's no stopping all that. You just drive. And, but one night, Phil was just like, I'm pulling over. We're tired. So it was like, well, let's.

one of us drive but you know Phil always had that kind of control tendencies you know and he's like no you don't sleep in a car cars are for riding not sleeping of course later on he would take naps in the car but anyway of course we stopped we and look this place it wasn't a hotel it was a motel yeah and it was it was it I thought there's no way I would ever stop but I thought we're bearded men we have guns we'll be fine. But so we got anything valuable out of our vehicle, including our guns, and we den up. And because Phil got up there and is like, we want one room, biggest one you got.

Well, there was about five of us. So the budgets were a little smaller back in the day, too, right, for production? Yeah, Phil's like, come with me, I'll pay for it. We're staying in one room. And so what's funny. is nobody in our crew took off their clothes but Phil and Phil took they had one bed look in this room had been reconstructed and this is like probably sometime in the late 50s or 60s this reconstruction happened this place was old rickety door and Phil there was but right when you open the door there was

the biggest bed it was just when you walk in there's a bed and then that had a little hallway and then there was two beds. So it had three beds. Well, there was five of us. And the other beds were small. So Phil had the main bed. Of course, you know, somebody should have slept with Phil, but everybody declined that. Which was just standard operating procedure.

Well, Phil also had a rule that during hunting season, never bathe or wash your clothes. Because the warmth escapes. I mean, now that I'm thinking about these stories, my dad was, boy, yeah, a screw loose on something like that. Maybe he just wanted to have his own bed. Maybe he was smarter than we gave him credit for. So I'm in one bed and I forgot who the other duck man was. He's in the other bed.

The cameraman, they got the floor. So I think we had two cameramen, and then there was three of us. And didn't think anything about it. I mean, went to bed. we're tired. And I heard a noise. It woke me up. And it sounded like somebody turning the doorknop.

So I raised my head up. Well, I didn't realize that my dad, old Phil, well, he heard the same thing. Well, he's in his bed and his tidy whitties. He has his shotgun loaded right beside him. Well, I just see my dad. rise up, he just kind of folded his legs and just propped his gun up and just raised it up. And I thought, if somebody thinks they're breaking his room, they have no idea what's waiting. And about that time, I had that thought, that door opened.

And I heard my dad say, in a deep, guttural, almost demonic voice. that said wrong room. And I couldn't see the front door, but I saw the hands go. I saw a flash of hands go up. And Phil, he said, Hey, Jace. I said, yeah.

He said, come look at this dude. He said the guy was just walking backwards. When I walked out, I looked through. the parking lot. He didn't close the door. He was, had his hands up. His butt was in a weird position, stick it out. He was still bit down like he was bowing.

And he was walking backwards and he was 75 yards in the parking lot walking backwards. Wrong room. No, it was more guttural, Zay. It was wrong room. That's one of my favorite story.

Just seeing that, Zach, watching that guy backing out. I've seen it in my mind so many times imagine, because you know what he was thinking? Boy, is he ever right? We laughed about that. We laughed mainly because one of the cameras cameraman said the most disturbing part of all that was how comfortable you were, Phil. And the fact that he went cross-leg on the bed just, you know. That was the strangest part of the story, I thought. Is that some kind of position that, like, supposed to help? He just looks so relaxed, and he's just, wrong room. That guy, that guy would have blinked.

He would no longer have been on the planet. I'm telling you that right now. So I've just taken on probably this year, the most ambitious landscape project of my life. And he's like, I will, I open, maybe, unless he had mischief in his mind. Well, he would know. I mean, it was, and then we looked at all the time. It was 3 o'clock in the morning. What's the guy doing breaking into a motel room, 3 o'clock in the morning? It is true. He might have been inebriated. But anyway, all I was going to make the point on tell the pastor in the spirit of Phil,

Jesus said, I have come to have a life. And that they may have it more abundantly. I just never liked the idea of surrounding myself with dead animal, anything dead. You know what's funny, Jay's, and I'm your older brother and, you know, has killed my share of things through the years as well, especially when I was younger. But I've never mounted an animal either and had basically felt just like you did. In fact, when we were living together for a few years with Anna and Jay, they lived upstairs and we lived downstairs because our house is big there in the compound. Jay had all these dead animals, but Lisa had a strict rule. No dead animals hung in my house.

And so he had to hang them all at the duck call shop because you wouldn't let him. But as soon as we moved down and built this little place out back, it looks like a bass pro shop in there when you walk in there now. I mean, you cannot fit another massive deer. I'm not opposed to it. I just, it's not my thing. I like to eat them. It's expensive.

That's for sure. Is it? They're cheap. Oh, yeah. Oh, BK. She just killed like some kind of big sheep-looking animal. It's called an orinx. And that thing was like $2,000 to mount. Crazy.

Well, what's interesting, what started this conversation is with this kid is because a woman had said to me, I was just trying to get through a door. People were talking because we were getting ready for the event. And she said, my husband does all y'all's taxidermy work. And I was like, really? I was in North Carolina. I thought, I think she'd got me confused with somebody else because I was like, one,

well, maybe I have hunted a couple times in North Carolina. I went dove hunting one time. But two, I thought I've never mounted anything. So, but maybe she met our family or whatever. But the kid was asking me about that. He's like, what's your, what's your favorite mount? And I was like, oh, I've never mounted anything. But then he felt bad because he killed his first dove.

this year and he mounted it. I was like, I didn't say there was anything wrong with it. You missed a good line right there. When he said, what's your favorite mount? You should have said Mount Zaya. Yeah, that's what I said. Mount of Transfiguration. Or Mount of Transfiguration, that's right. So anyway, that's that. But I will tell you one story that happened. Because I've noticed something. This podcast has prepared me for life. because back when we started with the wisdom, it sounds so easy.

If anybody needs wisdom, just ask God for it. So I did. That week was filled with the most difficult conversations involving relationships that I'm a part of and different things that came up. And I thought, I asked for wisdom and then all this conflict came before me. starting to sound like James won.

Well, that's what I thought. Well, lo and behold, now we're to the point of everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to become angry, which made me even uncomfortable to have a podcast about because I'm like, these are things that I struggle with. Yeah. So when you know it, I'm headed into North Carolina, but I'm going the day before because it was hard to get, it's hard to get to North Carolina. Carolina Zay.

Yep. It's just because from Monroe, you only have two options. If you go in West. Atlanta, Dallas. There you go. Or you got to go to Atlanta if you're going east. And sometimes you've got a little extra stop in Charlotte

depending on the situation. Well, he could land it in Charlotte. That's where he should have. Well. But you still got two stops. My event was in Greensboro. The event was five minutes from the airport. This was perfect.

Oh, in fact, after the event, I said, if y'all ever need me again, let me know. I don't know to do that, but I thought, once I got there, that was the easiest thing in the world. It was, I mean, if I was five minutes. So what I was going to say is, so we're leaving the day before. Well, I'm meeting with my team, you know, along the way, it's the way it works. And we got Aunt Bonnie. She's really good at her job. And so I'm bringing her up because what happened was when I got to,

to leave Monroe. Well, it had rained earlier that morning, but there was no weather. I was supposed to leave, whatever it was, 10, 11 o'clock. Well, that came and went. They're like, delayed, but never gave a reason.

So we were delayed about an hour. Well, I got to looking, maybe a little more an hour. I got to looking on my next flight, and I thought, well, I'm going to be cutting this kind of close. So I sent a text to Aunt Bonnie and said, hey, this may be close.

And she's like, well, I'll be there and I'll hold the plane for you, you know. I was like, ha, okay, whatever. So anyway, we take off, I leave. Well, as soon as I landed, because, you know, you don't have the cell service while you're in the flight. She's like, I've talked to the stewardess. They saw, you know, when you're playing, you're good,

but you may have to run. And I thought, no, I ain't running, you know. But I did take off walking as fast as I could. I'm looking at my phone, and I thought, well, I'm going to be there about 10 minutes, 10 to 12 minutes before it was supposed to take off. So I thought, if they're going to hold it, that's fine. So when I got, and everything went my way, it's like I was first off the plane. The shuttle came right up when I walked up.

I thought, okay, it's just supposed to be. This is, this is happening. I get to the terminal, it's a. well she calls me and she's like run you know because it's like you got two minutes well i'm in the you know i'm like well i make two minutes so i broke the cardinal rule took off running and i had my hoodie on which drew security because now i have a security guy chasing me which i thought was funny because i thought if i could make it too much right now all i got to do is outrun him and then they'll get there i'll take my head off okay and uh so

get there and get my phone out security guys there and he he just recognized me there there there was nothing to that security but but i thought oh go ahead now i'm in trouble hey jays how you doing i was like pretty good i got to get on this plane right now because i was the plane's here bonnie's like talked to stuarts oh so i was like let me give my phone and this woman here says policy the policy and it's like policy what is she talking about about. I was like, I got my ticket right here. She's like, the policy. And I was just looking at her like, but she wasn't looking at me in the eye.

And then Bonnie's like, they're not going to let you on this plane. I was like, because I'm getting that from Bonnie, not this woman. She's staring off in space, mumbling policy. I said, the door's open. The plane's there. The jetway is still attached. What seems to be the problem? She said, well, the policy says, we'll book you on another flight.

Now, at that moment, how you know what popped in my head? You want to be quick to listen, slow to speed. Everyone, I kid you not. I literally said, everyone needs to be slow to speak, quick to listen. I knew where you were going. to become angry. And then the famous line of Phil's popped in my head because the last time I ran in an airport didn't make it.

I made it, but similar situation. When I got back down to Phil's and told him the story, he said, hey, Jays, always remember this. Never run in an airport. You're there to fly. And I thought, Now those are words of wisdom. They are.

You're there to fly. Never run in an airport. You're there to fly. You're not there to run. And usually it doesn't work. I thought you were going to say, Dave would say, hey, that's why I don't fly commercial.

No, he came up with that pithy saying off the top of his head, which was awesome. Which was awesome. And you know what? I had a good attitude. I went on. I didn't even take the shuttles because then she was like, your next gate, you're in D.

It couldn't have been any further away from where I was right there. And I just moseyed on there and went to one of these little places to get some food, you know, where you, because they had some, I like to get stuff this real, like fruit, cheese, you know, crackers, stuff you can't screw up. And I took a picture with a guy while I was standing there and the woman checking it out. she was like, are you a celebrity? I was like, so it seems. You know, I just took a picture with a random stranger.

She said, well, who are you? I was like, I'm a nobody. But at one time we had a show, it's called Duck Down. She's like, I watched that as a kid. And look, Al, if you've seen the amount of stuff, overpriced stuff that I had assimilated here, that was hungry. Yeah. And she said, oh, I'm paying for all this.

I was like, no, no, no, no, you don't have to do that. She said, oh, she said, I watched that as a kid, and it made me smile when I needed to smile. And I thought, well, things are looking up here, you know what I mean? See, you're already getting a blessing because you responded to the James away. So then I found my gate where I had to walk and wait, you know, it wasn't like the end of the world, you know, a couple hours, I'm getting on another plane. And there was, I sat down and there was a small group of, it looked like teenagers. I later found out

they had just graduated high school and gone to the Bahamas. No, I didn't know when I, because here's how the conversation started. I sat out and they started whispering and I could hear Duck Dynasty and Jace in the whispering.

And I said, are y'all just going to talk to me, to my face, or are y'all going to whisper like I can't hear? They all looked up, you know. And they're like, we thought that was you,

but now we know it is. And I was like, well, how do you know? No, because of my voice. I said, oh, okay. Well, one of them had probably pulled your picture up, too, and was taking a look at that. 15 or 20 of them. And I said, where are y'all been?

They said, oh, we've been in the Bahamas. And, I mean, I looked out, here's 20 teenagers. I said, y'all went to the Bahamas for what? And they said, we just graduated high school. I said, well, how much cutting up? I went full PR right off the bat. Such a feel thing to say. said how much cutting up did you do down in the Bahamas in the last few days?

I'm surprised y'all are still functional, but they just froze when I said that. And I thought, huh, okay, well, here we go. Y'all need a sermon. So that led to, I would say, over an hour of a Jesus discussion and all sorts of issues that they asked random questions about. And look, the adults, not that they're not adults, so I guess they're adults, but I mean, the older people kind of started listening then

because they were so far away from me, this was loud. So we had a terminal podcast, airplane tournament. Well, what's embarrassing and funny is when I got up, they were ready to go, I was getting up to go, you know, and all this. Well, then there's two couples, the chaperones, the parents came up and said, That was awesome. I was like, oh, y'all are with them on the Bahamas?

Well, then I thought, well, I accused them of cutting up. And they're like, oh, no, get them. Get them. You know, it said, oh, no, they love the Lord. And, you know, their church every Sunday, which was their take on that. And I thought, well, isn't that something? Well, they had the same reaction to you as to the story about me getting the whipping for getting drunk whenever Bill's parents, they said, he looked at them and said, look, this is your son.

I mean, you know, I don't have to whip him right here in front of him. And they were like, get him, Phil. Get him. So it's the same idea. You want that discipline coming. I should have known. One of the guys said, I listened to y'all's podcast. I was like, really?

Well, things are looking up here, you know. But I was thinking he's got a guilty conscience. I never got passed. Because I didn't know they were parents there. I thought, y'all lying, you know, down there, cut it up. I mean, I went full. scale how'd you get here biology you know what it's

in biology that it just randomly happened you know life and DNA chemical reactions that's what you're hanging your hat on huh they wouldn't say anything this old guy here is crazy oh I just sledgehammer sledgehammer so

so before we get because there's a tease I'm going to bring up that you mentioned in the last podcast, which we're going to get to. But I want to tell you, my quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to become angry story, I have one too. On my trip, this trip, now it's funny because you flew, which normally I fly as well, but this particular trip, we were coming from Gulf Shores, St. Augustine's about six hours, which is kind of in that window that I just as soon drive to avoid what happened to you. The issue is we had just got leased his car fixed. And so I know nothing about automotive how to fix that. I'm the least

handiest person on the planet. I'm pretty good with the Bible text and podcasting, but that's about it. And so we had all this work done on the car. Well, you know, I assume that we're good to go because this is like five grand worth of work, you know, and they're like, oh, you're good to go. So I take off five grand. You could buy a not pretty decent vehicle for five years. No, you're going back a few years, Jay. You can't buy much for five grand anymore. Hey, I can take you to a place right now. I'm not saying it looks good and all that.

It will do the job. It will run for five grand. So I'm thinking this is a, you know, this is a pretty nice vehicle. And we hadn't really putting any money into it. So I thought, well, that's probably time. And so I want to make sure this is safe. I got five grandkids with me. Well, we're about halfway here.

Well, actually halfway to Gulf Shores and then on to here. And I feel amiss in there. And I thought, good night. They didn't, they did. I still feel a miss. There's something missing inside my motor. And again, I don't know exactly what to do to fix things, but I know when something's not right. But, you know, what are you going to do?

We're already on our way. We get here with that mist now is turned into the engine light coming home. And now it's getting worse. And so I'm already coming to meet these guys. They're letting me do my podcast here. And so I call the guy this morning, Hunter, who's a great guy who works for this church. I said, Hunter, you know a good mechanic. at your church there?

I said, you know, you guys got a pretty vibrant church. He started laughing. He said, yeah, actually, we just got a brand new convert. He's a good mechanic. He's got a shot nearby, the church. I said, well, I need you to take a look at it. And here's, so I took it by and dropped it this morning. But here was the point I wanted to make.

So I was kind of angry about, you know, my car not being fixed back home when I got it fixed. But I thought to myself, Jay, it's made the application. I thought, you know what? I don't know anything about vehicles. I mean, I know that it's not working properly, but I don't know how to fix it. I don't know anything about it. There's nothing I have to offer here other than it's not working and a light comes on. And now the computer tells you most of the stuff.

And so I thought I got nothing to say. I need to listen to whatever these people tell me. And there's no sense to being angry about it because what am I going to do? I'm in St. Augustine, Florida. I got to have it running to get home or figure another way to get home. So I kind of found myself in the same boat you're in. And look, all these people are so helpful today. They lined it all up.

I go by there. They're even talked to the mechanics. They say, we'll let you know when your podcast are over, you know, where the status of the car is. And so by letting go, James is right. There is something positive about not speaking up when you have really nothing to say anyway. Because really, did it really, did these things really matter, you know? No. I mean, it's like I say, it's out of your control.

And now I made the spirit. I was going to, because I had to speak, and it was Father's Day. So I didn't do my normal speech, which made my team really nervous. And I had to be mindful of the time because... You had another service. Well, right. This thing was, here we go. But I just thought, what a risk this leadership took.

I mean, can you imagine the meeting or somebody's like, okay, here it is. Father's Day, because this is a relatively new building is one of the finest structures. I actually said, God doesn't live in buildings. There's verses all over the play. I said this in the speech. I was like, but if he chose one, this is pretty well at the top of the lip. I mean, this was world-class settings and accommodations and just the, this where I spoke and the crowd, the arena, it felt like an arena, you know, like I stepped into it.

It was fantastic. But I thought, can you imagine? Here's the guy's like, Father's Day, Jace Robertson, Duck Commander, preach Sunday service, you know. We'll do two services. I mean, somebody had to say, wait, what? The guy, no.

But then they did it. And I think it went well. But I was going to tell that story about my airplane encounter. Because I thought, you know what the difference was? And what, because it was Father's Day, which was kind of a tough day for me because I thought, I was thinking about Dad the whole time. And I was like, man, I miss that guy.

And I was kind of away from my family. So despite I'm surrounded by thousands of people, it just kind of makes you think about these things. I actually got emotional a couple times in the second service, which I was like, what is happening here? but I thought about using that for an illustration that if that, because it was a woman and a man at the counter that wouldn't let me on the plane, and I thought, you know if it was their daughter or if I was their son, I guarantee you I would have made it on that plane. And I thought she was talking about policy.

I mean, later on I just thought she's pulled up some rule that is their policy. whatever, they probably have so many minutes before they take off, you know. Yeah. And she's putting that above relationship, which I thought, what a good spiritual application that would be. Because the only thing I did say, I was slow to speak, slow to become, I never, I never was angry. But I did say, you do realize that they left six minutes before the time that was stated

And she went, yes, I do realize that. And I thought, okay, I was just bringing that up, you know. She's talking about all this policy stuff. I thought, you actually left six minutes earlier than you said, you know. But then I thought, okay, well. This spring, denim gets a softer, lighter update. If it had been a employee, say a flight attendant that was going to another place to be able to work and catch her flight for the next trip down the line,

she would have gotten on two or him. And so the relationship. relationship. It does matter. Well, it matters. Go ahead. Well, Bear went to London on a mission trip. They were doing some work with some refugees there and different things. And anyways, so they were late.

They got delayed. Their fight got delayed. And so on the way there. And so Bear, the story is, I may have already told this story. I can't remember. He, like, fakes like he's injured on the, on the tart. Like when he's getting on the, like right where the door's at. Oh, boy.

He's acting like he can't breathe and all this thing. So he's doing the old. It might be. Allegedly. He allegedly, to stall to make sure, allegedly he did this, to stall to make sure that the rest of the team got on. And they did because they couldn't shut the door until he was distracting everything. So it was like pro along the whole experience for three to four minutes, just enough for them to get on. Now, they were running in the airport.

See, that's what Aunt Bonnie should have done. She should have faked it in. You got to have people. Then he calls me when he gets, he's coming back from London. And you got to remember London is like, like this is a different. They don't allow guns or anything like that in London. Like that's a, that's a no-no. So he gets back on the airplane or back to the airport, goes through TSA or whatever their equivalent of that is in London.

And he's wearing the same jacket, Jay said he wore when he went duck hunting. with me and you back here in the ice storm. And guess what he had in one of those pockets? Shotgun shell. Two shotgun shells. Oh, boy. So then he gets detained. The cops come in,

did the whole investigation. So he almost got arrested. They released him, but it was 45 minutes for, you know, touch and go there. So it's, hey,

that airport business, it's dangerous. And he throw, he throw is a very tough airport to come in and out of, uh, just because of that. They've had so many terrorist threats through the years.

They don't play there. Well, you know what's funny is to show how the Word of God is contagious. The worst thing about that whole story, because a bunch of positive things happened, I mean, after that. So I was pretty positive. But when I met up with Aunt Bonnie, she was devastated because she kept apologizing, and she sent me numerous texts, you know, Because her point was she would have never got on without this stewardess promising.

And the stewardess walked up because the stewardess was a fan and knew who we were. Walked up to the gate members said, you know, let him on the plane. So Bonnie's like, we're good, you know. And so after a while this went on, she kept a part. I was like, let's just move on. You know, no big deal. Actually, some positive things happened. It's no big deal.

but she kept on. And I was like, I'm going to give you a verse that was very helpful for me during this process. And I quoted, everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak,

slow to speak. I said that about three times. Slow to speak and slow to become angry. I'm not mad at you. You know, you did your job, great job. It was beyond your control.

I'm a grown man. I was fine. No big deal. Because they're all. worried about, you know, Missy and her. They think that sometimes scattered brain that I'll wind up in, you know, the Bahamas when I was supposed to be going.

Which I have gotten on the wrong flight before. They have an argument. I'm not saying they don't, you know. But I'm just like, oh, well, my bad. Let me get off here. You know. Well, I can tell you this, Chase, is a person who travels a lot. I've witnessed many confrontations at the airport counters, both to get tickets, to get on a plane.

And then once you're on a plane, trying to get your seat or have an issue, the three things that are most lacking are people that are slow to speak, quick to listen, and slow to become angry. I've seen those violated multiple, multiple times. So I'm like you, I've made it my mission in life, even if I'm wrong, even if I'm wrong, even if. if it's not, you know, somebody else's fault but not mine, I am not going to be that guy. Well, this turned into a practical application of said scripture, but I did want to, since I teased that, and I was going to do this in my speech for Father's Day, but I didn't, just because I didn't have time. Is that rain out there? It is raining here. So loud, I feel like I'm on Noah's arc. It's a perfect setting for this. But, uh, so while in Luke 9,

that's the one I'm choosing. Because you know what I thought about the word listen? And in English, this has become a conversation stopper. We use the word listen. I really want Zach's opinion on this because he's so smart. It's like we'll say, listen, listen. Or like when the coach comes out, every coach I ever had. We're all sitting there.

you know when I was a kid and you know what the first thing he says listen up listen up we're all sitting here waiting what what do you think we're going to do is start talking you're telling me to listen I got that part you know at about four when I was four or five years old listen listen up so that's kind of how we use it I think it's when you stop and think about James point because two verses later, he then kind of launches into listening without doing is useless. So this is something else than what we think because it's just a basic word for hearing. And look, it's in here 400 and I looked it up 70 times or whatever.

It's like every time when Jesus said, you know, he who has ears let him hear, it's same word, hearing. And what I found fascinating is later on in this verse when it says get rid of all moral filth, that little phrase moral filth, one of the root words for that word is like having your ears stopped up with gunk, you know, or a whack. You need to clean that out. But isn't that funny? Because it kind of goes along with listening and do it so you can do.

but if you've got some kind of blockage that's nasty, you need to get rid of that. So it's like a process. So I chose the Luke 9 version because the transfiguration happens earlier here than the other gospel accounts. I didn't go look them up, but it just seems like it. And the whole point, the reason I noticed this

is because we've said a bunch that James references the story. sermon on the Mount. And when you start looking at the sermon on the mountain thinking, what does it mean when Jesus said, I came here not to abolish the law, but to fulfill it? Because Moses gave the law. And what you notice is there's some kind of correlation with what Jesus is introducing that's like the new Exodus. And look, the similarities are fascinating.

You think about Moses and his story, and you fast forward to Jesus, you have, the story starts off with Herod killing the babies, you know. Well, Moses is the same thing. You have the cross in the Jordan as the apex of getting the promised land or whatever, or the Red Sea parting. You know, that would be another illustration that, but you have Jesus basically getting baptized in the Jordan River, you know. And so you remember what God said there, this is my son.

Because the Jordan River for them was significant. There's a reason John the Baptist, that's where he was hanging out. But then where does Jesus go? The wilderness. Well, and look, for 40 days. Well, I mean 40 days, really? they were there for 40 years. Then when you throw in all the Passover stuff,

you know, like in John, when John DeVev said, look, here's the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, you know. So it's, no, I'm sure there are others. I was going to ask other similarities. Well, even the one when he was a baby, and they took him into Egypt to protect him from Herod, and then he escapes back. It's the same idea of going in, being protected,

and then being, I mean, there's just all these little nuances. Or even like, I thought, the sermon on the mount itself and think of what happened on the mountain where the law was given. And now Jesus has taken the law and kind of turning it upside down, giving you the intent of it all. And so think about the conversation in John 5, which is one of my favorite verses, which we bring up all the time.

I brought it up my speech yesterday. When Jesus said, you think that by the scriptures, you'll have eternal life, but you refuse to realize that those are about me, and you won't come to me and have life. And it's only like three or four verses later. He brings up Moses. Yeah.

And so any other ones you can think of? Because there are others. That's just off the top of my head. Well, that's most of the main one, Jim. Well, and then you have this moment when, Now, you're talking about a listen. Because you had his baptism, which declares Jesus' identity, and the Holy Spirit descends on him like a dove.

And then he begins his ministry after he's tested in the wilderness. Oh, I'll tell you another one, similarity, is the three temptations were all things that Israel failed at. If you go down the rabbit hole of that, you know, if you just kind of look at them as a category. Oh, I know another one. John 6, the manna. Remember the manna?

And he's like, I'm bred from heaven. And remember he had the conversation? So you see all these things. And even Moses' mediator of the first covenant and Jesus' mediator of the second covenant. There's another. So that's why I think the transfiguration is so fascinating. You said, what's this got to do with being quick to listen? because this time when God speaks audibly,

I think you should take note. When he said, when Jesus was baptized, when he said, this is my son, whom I love, and with whom I'm well pleased. I mean, this is a moment. He is audibly declaring something to earth, which I find fascinating, because that would later be something

that I think God is going to say of us when we put our faith and trust in Jesus. So you see where I'm going with it. Then you come to the Transfiguration and just I'll read the story. It says about eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James

with him and went up on a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face change, his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Two men. Moses and Elijah. So here's Moses representing the Torah, the sermon,

think Mount Sinai, the Ten Commandments, and now think Jesus on the sermon of the Mount kind of given his take on what that meant. By the way, Jay, that's another crossover because Moses glowed as well back after he had had that encounter. Now, then you have Elijah, who's a prophet. And so later, Jesus would say multiple times, I came to fulfill what was written in the law

there you have Moses, and the prophets. Where's that out? I think Luke 24, it says that. Yeah, many times. But now, think of this practically. You're talking about a listen moment. Moses died 1,500 years ago. I looked it up.

And Elijah disappeared into the clouds 800 years ago. And now I get it, the disciples are sleepy. But they're ever going to be listening? This is probably the time. Listen. Listen, Linda. We have a guy claiming that God is his father,

referred himself as the son of man doing miraculous things, having a conversation with a guy who was dead 1,500 years ago, and they're all glowing, radiantly. And a guy who disappeared, this should be a moment here. I mean, I'm still, the once I kind of looked at it this way, I'm like, why did these guys run when he died? I just feel like, I'm like, I guess they were just sleepy and just thought it was only a dream that could not have happened. You kept me having a conversation with a guy that's dead 1,500 years ago.

And the point I want to make is this is one of the many reasons I follow Jesus. This dude is having a conversation with a guy that was dead 15 years ago. And you're like, well, how do you know he's dead? Because it says, God buried him. Yeah. And all of a sudden, what? But now think of the theological components of this. Here's Jesus coming to fulfill what was written in the law by Moses

and what was prophesied by Elijah. They're representing that whole Old Testament, which takes you back to John 5. That was all about this person coming. And how much proof does he have to give you than to have a conversation with two people that hadn't been here in over a thousand years? Yeah. How does this happen? So I set all that to lead up to the moment I want to get to. They spoke about his exodus.

Look, that word says departure. but the Greek word is his exodus, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Oh, oh, you saw why I come here now. Yeah. It is the new Exodus. This kind of freedom is from spiritual powers, from sin, from you past, from everything that's going wrong.

That's why we ain't worried about somebody saying policy, Okay, okay. I'm headed, I'm on a different trip anyway. It's complicated, long story. You're welcome to come join us if you want. Peter and his companion are very sleeping. But when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men stand there. As the men were leaving, Jesus, Peter said to him, Master, it is good.

And he wants to put up three shelters. Now look, remember the quick, slow to speak? Peter didn't understand that because, look, he's literally interrupted by God. which is you should be slow to speak god interrupts you while he was still speaking verse 34 he's violating that what james would say and i really think that's why james put it i do too they cloud appeared and developed them and they were afraid as they entered the cloud a voice came from the cloud now here he says the same thing that he said when he was baptized in other versions this is my son whom i love but he adds one thing

Listen to him. Listen to him. He is the fulfillment of all of that. He is your goal in life. And so I wanted to make the point when you hear that quick to listen, it matters what you're listening to and ultimately who you're listening to. Because if it doesn't result in then doing, this doesn't make sense. It's more than my practical story. You see what I mean? We told that story to say, this is bigger. than in the moment saying, oh, I need to listen. You know, no, you need to listen to Jesus. And then go do it is, I think, his point.

And if God interrupts you, you're probably talking too much. Exactly. All right. We're out of time. We'll pick it up here. I'm glad we got to that tease, Jays.
