Unashamed with the Robertson Family - Ep 1427 | This Hells Angels Enforcer Chased Freedom Until It Landed Him Behind Bars

Episode Date: September 24, 2026

A former elite Hells Angels enforcer gets real about how his search for family and freedom eventually landed him in prison. Joby Walters recounts recruiting the undercover ATF agent he unknowingly hel...ped bring into the club, the armed standoff with police that finally forced him to surrender, and literally fighting for his right to preach in prison. Jase spots some unexpected Uncle Si tendencies in Joby’s storytelling, while Al finds surprising parallels between Joby’s past and Phil’s life before Christ. Joby explains how leaving the Hells Angels behind and writing his new book Cut Free gave him an entirely new identity and a mission to reach people still trapped in the life he escaped. Starting point is 00:00:00 I am unashamed. What about you? Welcome back to Unashamed. It's, man, it's been a whirlwind for Al. We have been like Johnny Cash. I've been everywhere, man. You want to talk about whirlwind. Y'all don't even know what I've been going through. I hadn't told you all this story.
Starting point is 00:00:22 So this will be the cold open. Tell us the stories of that. So in the last week, Let's say, a week, so about a little weekend two days ago, we're at a football game, and we get a text that my brother-in-law, Ben Ackins, has had a stroke. And he's only, what, 40, mid-40s? He's your brother-in-law.
Starting point is 00:00:50 He's nearing 50 because your sister just turned 50. Well, he's younger than me that. I'm 48, so he's got to be 40. She married young. She created a ride on that one. We tell the story. She was a counselor at the camp. He was a camper at, so it's kind of, but of course, they found each other when
Starting point is 00:01:06 they're in college. But anyway, so we ended up at the ER last weekend, and he, because he had all the symptoms of a stroke, everything, I mean, slurred speech, didn't know his birthday, the whole thing. And so they ran the whole, all the workup on him. Turns out he was dehydrated, but it was quite the, quite the, I mean, we thought, I mean, we were pretty confident that he had a. You know what's interesting about that, Zach? I didn't know.
Starting point is 00:01:31 I mean, I did talk to Ben afterwards. I didn't know about the stroke part. I just checked on him once. I heard he was sick, and he said, I was just dehydrated. But, you know, he was with us years ago. And at this time, he would have been probably 30s, early 30s or late 20s even. And we were in Dominican, and he was my interpreter down there because he speaks fluent Spanish. And he got dehydrated.
Starting point is 00:01:53 Now I know what it was, but something happened one night to him when we were speaking. And it's hot, you know, Dominican Republic. And it's in the summer. And I'm speaking, and he just locked up on me. Like, you know, your interpreter's like going, and he looked at me like, I'm lost here. Like, he just totally, and looking back on it, I bet that's exactly what that was.
Starting point is 00:02:14 We never knew what happened. He went home and drank a bunch of water and slept in the thing for a day or two, and then he got all right again. But that's exactly what it was then, I bet. Well, then the next Friday night, we're at the football game, and a kid collapses.
Starting point is 00:02:27 they bring an, I mean, this is a whole ordeal. They bring out the paddles, the whole nine yards. At the game? At the game. And so then they bring out an ambulance, which took forever to get there. Then a cheerleader collapses. They bring out another ambulance. So at the high school football game, the very next week, we had two ambulances,
Starting point is 00:02:45 about an hour delay, just getting everybody out. And then the very next day, one of our elders, 42 years old, had a heart attack. So we have been, it has been a whirlwind. We've been up a, it's just been a crazy week, man. I'm telling you. Well, I feel better. I feel better about my week. Outwardly, we are wasting away.
Starting point is 00:03:04 Yes, we are. I mean, look. I was just speaking all over. The way I feel about that when I hear this is we view death, you know, as a problem unless you're in Jesus. Yep. But it's like, you know, people blame God for various things, and we've all had our moments. Yeah. My best friend from high school got killed in the car wreck, and I was like, well, why did this happen?
Starting point is 00:03:33 But death is not a problem if you're in Jesus. We're all going to die. I actually, I was in North Dakota, and I had various symptoms because I go two days to North Dakota doing a event there. I wasn't duck hunting. Everybody I told I was going to North Dakota, they're like, oh, you're going to hunt ducks because North Dakota is one of our states that actually raise our ducks. Phil used to call them Continentals.
Starting point is 00:04:01 You know, ducks not raised in Canada. You know what's fascinating is I spent two days in North Dakota. You know how many ducks I saw? Zero. I never saw one. But I did an event and it's fantastic. I loved the people. I felt like I needed subtitles because just in conversations,
Starting point is 00:04:18 people, they didn't understand what I was. You know, they have kind of an accent themselves. Yeah. But I kept having to repeat myself. But I did tell a joke that's not a joke. It's, I heard a comedian give this, and he's no longer with us on the earth, Norm MacDonald. But I thought it was a good moment because he said when he dies,
Starting point is 00:04:48 he wanted to donate his body to signs, which I've actually, like a moment. my driver's license, if I get killed, I'm donating, you know, my organs and all that. I don't know how you feel about all that. Because I figure I'm going to get a new body anyway. So if you want to use any of these parts, Nike CFL, I'm getting it back. But so when I said that, though, I could tell the crowd that made them uncomfortable. Because we were, even though it was a Saturday and we were at a church building, and there was a lot going on.
Starting point is 00:05:19 We were right across the road from the college. there and i was in valley city and i'd set this up with saying it because it's right outside of fargo and so on my way to fargo i was the leg i had to go was dallas to fargo so i'm at the little gate but i'm there way too early because it's hard to go from monroe to fargo yeah timely i had like a four hour layover so i go there and there's there's three women there sitting at the gate. And it doesn't say Fargo. But, you know, my phone is telling me this is where you go.
Starting point is 00:06:01 And so I said, I thought, I'm going to get to know, see if they're going to Fargo, and I'll do a little research. And so I said, y'all headed to Fargo. And one of the women said, well, yeah. And I said, well, I'm doing an event there. So what's it like? What's it famous for? and those three women spent the next five minutes basically telling me to turn around and head back.
Starting point is 00:06:32 Yeah, I thought it was not a good thing, you know, and the only thing they said it was famous for was there was a movie called Fargo, which I haven't seen. So I said, what was that about? And three things stuck out that they said, stealing money. Yeah, murder. It was real dark and a lot of death. That's right. And I said, well, I think that sums up the earth. earth. And they just were looking at me with blank stairs. But, uh, so I said that in my speech.
Starting point is 00:07:00 I said, look, this is what you're known for. Because we're, we're in Valley City right outside of Fargo. And so then I read Psalm 23. Grace is making friends fast. I started with Psalm 23. Though I walked through the valley with, uh, now, now I've had a brain cramp. Uh, through the shadow. of death because that's what they're known for some movie that was just basically death darkness and money and stealing and all this i'll fear no evil i was like we need to change what we're known for here and so then i did my joke which is was not a joke i said so when i die i said i want to i'm jace you know i'm a nobody but i believe there's a god and he's alive and uh i said when i die
Starting point is 00:07:49 I think I'm going to donate my body to science. And I just bathed in the Paul's awkward silence that that led. And I said, I heard a comedian say this. And it's because... This is the Norm MacDonald? Yeah, the scientist that I'm giving my body to, that I've given my body to is the way I said it. I said, he specializes in raising dead men
Starting point is 00:08:19 from the ground. Now look, when I said that, they erupted. Oh, that was the line. Yeah. And I thought, isn't that ironic, though, that a dead comedian from Saturday Night Live actually said that.
Starting point is 00:08:34 Yeah. Which is why I used it. Yeah, he wound up being interesting anyway, both for his faith, but also he was a conservative. Well, he was from my favorite era of that show. That was a pretty good line, he said, and I used it. It was good. And then I shared Jesus.
Starting point is 00:08:49 It was a real raucous crowd. I got me a good duck contact. A lot of people had beard, so I felt comfortable. And they were all male. I actually highlighted both of you in my speech. Lisa did, actually, you two, because we were doing that Covenant Care adoptions in Macon, Georgia had an event and had us speak.
Starting point is 00:09:12 And we've never really done an adoption thing before. And so we told about our family. And I told about Willie and Jep. and then Lisa told about you guys and sort of the contributions that you guys have made in the lives of people because we talked about your Carina and we talked about Little Man
Starting point is 00:09:30 and then we talked about Ruth but this organization that's what they do in Georgia so it was really good I had the best Little Man moment before I left went on this trip so we were you know it's 100 degrees here and he's like soon as he gets to our house he's like let's go to the pool you know
Starting point is 00:09:48 Okay, great. So we go down there, but we were, you know, playing various games and all. Well, he started running toward the shallow end from dry land, and he would run and kind of just jump in. And so I thought, oh, I'm going to teach him about Jesus walking on the water. Yeah. And so, because he would run, he would start to sink, you know. And I said, did you know that there was a guy that was on this planet?
Starting point is 00:10:15 His name was Jesus. and he's like, oh, I've sung about Jesus. So I'm like, okay, you're with me. The one we sing about it. I said, he could actually walk on the water. And he was like, he did? So seeing this little boy try to emulate that. He tried, because he's four years old.
Starting point is 00:10:39 It made me thinking about the verse unless you change and become like children. He just heard something that just wrecked his brain. Like how? could you how could he have done it and so he would try and he you know of course you can't walk on water he's like how did he do it he kept saying that and i was like well he was god god was helping him he was a human he like us but he had the power of god that you could walk on water because he made the water and it was blowing his mind but he was so fascinated and i just thought to myself why are we not
Starting point is 00:11:17 that fascinated about that. It is, because you could just see it in his emotions. And he was like, we really need to follow him. I said, exactly. Exactly. That's exactly why Jesus brought the child in. Well, we've got a special guest coming in. And we, it's a very interesting interview.
Starting point is 00:11:40 We've already done the interview. Oh, that's a nice way to say. This is totally uncharted waters. It is. Because we're bringing in a form. former member of Hell's Angels. And I mean, I had to do some research on this because I'm like, it actually is not what I thought it was.
Starting point is 00:11:57 I guess when I heard Hell's Angels, I thought, oh, they're like claiming to be demonic angels and extension of that. And when he's speaking, you guys are going to, it's kind of hard to keep up because it was hard for us because he has side tendencies. He has side tendencies. And also, I mean, it's almost a different language when he's speaking. in code of the club. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:20 You know, it's its own language. So when he says church, he means a meeting, the one percent or kind of the upper echelon of the, of that, of that community. But, but yeah, this particular gentleman, he was the body guy for the head of Hells Angels, Sonny Barger. So, yeah, he's, I mean, he's, he's seen some stuff since time in prison and then, shockers, a spoiler alert. He meets Jesus in the end, but it's a powerful test.
Starting point is 00:12:45 It's a fascinating story. So we'll take a break. After we come back from this break, we'll have our special guest on. So we just had a big film come out. It was Daniel and the fire furnace did really well at the box office. And at some point, it's going to land on our new platform called ECHL.com. We got into this because we realized that the problem is not just about content. It's how do we get that content to market?
Starting point is 00:13:07 How do we get this in the homes and on people's TV screens? We need to quit watching stuff just degrading our mind and culture. So we are fully behind eKKKL.com. We're fully behind Echo. It's way more than just a streaming service, though. It has movies series podcast, Daily Devo. It's got a lot of kids' content. Ruth loves the kids' content, like movies like Light of the World,
Starting point is 00:13:26 and a whole lot more is coming soon. And it's the only place you can get this podcast ad-free. So if you don't like the ads, you have an option now. You can also get a bunch of other podcasts, not just ours. You get blurry creatures. You get full-fledged with Priscilla Shire and a whole lot of new stuff is being added every single day. So go to echo.com.
Starting point is 00:13:43 Check it out. You'll get 20% off a one-year subscription, I think makes it less than six bucks a month if you do that. With our code, go unashamed. Go check it out. EKK.com code go unashamed. Protecting your home is a big deal if you think about burglars or whatever. But, you know, in the mountains, we're having an epidemic of black bears breaking into homes.
Starting point is 00:14:07 So I have something behind my door that can actually stop a black bear. It's called a 45 caliber pistol. The thing that makes me nervous about it, though, is will the kids get into it? it. I have protection. So that's why I'm excited to tell you about the stopbox. You got one right there on the table, Jay. So I've got one in my house that I put my pistol in. It's an interesting setup for a combination because it's muscle memory. You can still get in it easily once you practice and learn and when. There you go. You got it. How long that take? Three seconds. And the good thing is it doesn't have batteries or no keys, no fingerprints or codes that you got to deal with. And it's
Starting point is 00:14:48 TSA compliant so you can safely and legally check your firearm when you fly. The new stopbox you can uses the same mechanical locking system, but it gives you more room for your firearm, ammo, and other gear. I've been used to stopbox for a while now, and it's one of those things I'm very glad I have in my home for a limited time listeners to our show. You get 10% off at Stopbox when you use the code Unashamed at checkout. Just head on over to StopboxusA.com. Use the code unashamed for 10% off.
Starting point is 00:15:18 off your entire order. And after you purchase, they're going to ask you where you heard about them. Please support our show and tell them that we sent you. That's code Unashamed at stopboxusa.com. So welcome back to Unashamed. We have a very special guest with us today, Joby Walters. Joby has written a new book called Cut Free, A Hell's Angel Ride to Redemption. Days, that's quite the title.
Starting point is 00:15:46 I've never individually met a Hell's Angel. Me either. You're our person. I did take a picture with a bunch of them somewhere in the restaurant somewhere, which I thought was interesting. But that's about as far as that means. What I thought interesting is, Joby, if you're not, if you're listening, you're not watching. He's got a cowboy hat on, which reminds me of that David Allen co-song about where the bikers are laughing at the hippies who are staring at the cowboys who are hoping they'll get out of here live. Yeah. I've seen that.
Starting point is 00:16:16 I've been in that picture. Yeah. So you've kind of gone between, now you've got the cowboy hat on. Well, and that's what I want to ask you, Joey. So when they send this stuff, you know, for people we're going to have on, they sent a copy of your book and a picture.
Starting point is 00:16:30 And I've read the book and it's fantastic. We'll talk about it later. But the picture of it on the cover is you looking like a hell's angel. I mean, the very, everything we imagine about what a hell's angel looked like with the hair and the tattoos and the biker vest. And then there's a picture of you now,
Starting point is 00:16:46 which is the way you look, for folks who are watching today. And you just, you look like a rancher. You know, you got the goatee, the hat. You got the, so tell us where you're living now and kind of what you're doing. And then we're going to work our way back and tell a little bit about your story. After everything, well, hello for one, you know, and I'm glad to be here and an audience out there.
Starting point is 00:17:06 God bless you all, you know. You know, my story is, if I'd put everything in, it would have been a novel. But where I landed is when I got back, got out of prison. and I lost an identity, you know, and I had to put one back on. Prison gave me one. I preached there, but where I landed was back in the mountains, back on a ranch. Up in the Mugganand-R-Ring country, the rough country of Cherry Creek, you see our arches, that's where I landed on some good mountain horses.
Starting point is 00:17:33 And I take care of the middle of the ranch. All the cattle come through from the south through us, Brandon, and everything, and everything we pushed north down into the lower desert country comes through there, and that's where we brand. And I live right there. It's a lot of work. I make my living in a saddle with a pack of hound dog. Mount Lines and bears.
Starting point is 00:17:50 I guide. I'm an outfitter. So I supplement my income with that, you know, but I don't take many people. And this is my last year of guiding. Jesus told me so. Because I think I know I'm taking a different road. You know, it's the legacy starts with this book, Cut Three. And he's going to put me, you know, out there on the road.
Starting point is 00:18:10 And we'll talk about that, of course. Yeah. But that's where I landed. Well, we, you know, have always, we love westerns. Our favorite movies are westerns and people doing what you're doing now for a living in the old days, you know, back when a lot more people did it. And so, but there's nothing Western in any of us. We don't know anything about it. I couldn't ride a, I've never ridden a horse in my life.
Starting point is 00:18:34 Oh, my goodness. I invite you to the corral. You have to come on out. I would be fascinated by that, no doubt about that, Joe. My gate's open, brother. That might be good. So tell us, so I love it, these dropped in there. You know when I got out of prison.
Starting point is 00:18:51 Again, that sounds like another country song. But so even in prison, I found it fascinating when I read your book because you had to have a brawl to earn the right to preach. Do you remember that part when you wrote in the book? Tell about that, because I found that, I thought that was fascinating. I've never thought about anybody just having a beat down so they can get a right to. to preach, but that's what you did. I, yeah, I had, I fought for Lord. And I bled and incarcerated for the club, the club, you know.
Starting point is 00:19:23 Yeah. But when I went to prison, brother, you know, and it's in my book, you know, the Lord led me after that. He had a hold of me. And when I went to prison, you know, I was in the hole, of course, you know, half a million dollar bail. And we got that down. But I was walking out of my cell in the second tier.
Starting point is 00:19:41 And you only got that little eight by 12 inch window. on that steel door in a cubicle that's maybe six foot wide and eight foot long, you know, 23 hours in there. You get an hour out. That was before sentencing. And it was hard on a man, real hard on man. I'm about nowhere I come from. I rode places where no white cowboy ever rode down in the snow or Mexico.
Starting point is 00:20:05 And here, you know, my freedom was horseback and with my dogs. But I walked out of there off that there and I was walking down to tear and I hit that flat pat for me. And you get out an hour to take the shower, clean yourself, make a phone call, watch the TV, clean place, you know. And I looked in all them little windows, there was a face to them. And I said, Lord, what do I do? Because everybody knew Jobby Walters is here. They got Jobi. And I said, Lord, what do I do?
Starting point is 00:20:32 He said, go get your Bible. And I did. And I walked up and I walked back down. I know you'd give me the words. And I sat it down. I looked at all them windows up there. And I told, you know, hey, I said, And men, I said, I don't have what you need.
Starting point is 00:20:45 I said, but I know who does in his name is Jesus. And I opened to Ephesians 2 and 2, 2nd chapter 1 through 10. Read that. And I went to prison. I preached on the yard. I walked the yard. I played basketball. Everybody knew me.
Starting point is 00:21:00 I was a hand, you know, I throw softball and everything. But I preached on the yard. And I, there was some serignos, Southsiders and Nortinos and their own brotherhood. And all that was right there, you know. And I stayed out of the politics. and I never call myself a Bible thumper, but I shared the word. And I talked to a couple guys, you know, all tattooed their face, you know. And I had one come to him and they wanted me to pray for a sister,
Starting point is 00:21:24 and it was getting a tumor out. We prayed for when they went in and did the X-ray to do it, tumor was gone. Check that out. Yeah. Yeah, that was pretty heavy. I even shook my head and walked away. Well, we had a meeting. I got all of them together, all the shop callers at the table,
Starting point is 00:21:39 pick-knit table. I said, just talk to them for a minute. They came. Some knew me and some didn't want to know me. And I said, here's what's on my mind, man. I said, you know, you're leaders. You shot collars. These guys have do anything you say. You know, here you are.
Starting point is 00:21:53 You've been shot out on the street and stabbed. You fought in prison. You know, drugs. You know, you got things going on that ain't right. And I said, how'd you like to be leaders of men to Christ? You know, like the disciples, a leader of men, you know, not just catching fish, but lead your men. and the reaction I got was up from the table and they walked away. This is hard people, man.
Starting point is 00:22:17 Yeah. You know, and I was a hard man at one time. You know, I understood where they're from. I lived for that glory or that identity that was on my back for a long time. They told me one day, I said, hey, you can be talking to our guys. I said, I kneel for nobody. I said, I won't do it, you know. And he said, well, we'll have to take care of it.
Starting point is 00:22:38 I said, we can throw hands right now. right by phone booth, there's a little pocket in there. I've seen some stuff go down. If a couple of guys get around the fountain, you can hardly see it. I said, I'll meet you to telephones. Let's go. It made me mad. And we got down, you know, guy, he's been lifting weights, but I was mean and fast.
Starting point is 00:22:56 And I've probably been in more fights in one year, and that boy's been in five, you know. So I never had to take care of myself, you know. And we went through the ground. I broke my wrist. Yeah. So we rolled out of there and stood up, you know. It wasn't like they pulled anybody. off.
Starting point is 00:23:11 And, you know, I throw it up like that, you know, enough's enough. We walked. And I tried to take him out. Of course, I'd beat up too.
Starting point is 00:23:19 I was all pulled on. I, you know, I had blouse die. And it was for real, you know, bat ripped my ear off. And,
Starting point is 00:23:25 yeah. I just found that fascinating. It's like that movie, it's like the movie the apostle where you got a Robert DeVosz character. I look out of a Patrick Swayzey thing, you know.
Starting point is 00:23:38 You had Billy Bob Thornton comes up on the bulldozer And he's going to bulldoze the church down And so the pastor comes out, ripped him off the bulldozer, beats the mess out of him And then the next scene he's got his arm around him on the curb He said, now, son, Jesus loves you and I love you We spent all of our childhood Eating fresh caught fish
Starting point is 00:24:02 And you still do it as to this very day, right? I mean, it's still part of your repertoire. We were commercial fishermen and I dropped the commercial part and just kept fishing. But I'm telling you, there's nothing to me, in my opinion, that satisfies the hunger pains like fresh fish. So one of our sponsors, Wild Alaskan Company, offers the best way to get wild-caught, high-quality seafood delivered to your door on your schedule. Starting point is 00:25:26 So how did you, so how did you end up in prison? What landed you in prison in the first place? The club, doing stuff for the club. You know, every 1% her outfit is coming into Arizona because we, got weak. And, you know, I'm sorry to say that out there to your brothers, but we did. You know, we did. We got weak. The Mongols come to visit. They didn't come to visit. They came to stay, you know. So we got it on at Harris Casino and the pair. I was in on that pretty hard. It's all identity. You walk into a room with that patro, man, you're going to get respect,
Starting point is 00:25:58 you know, and I don't care who you are or how you look, but that hell's angel is going to get your respect because of fear. I want to respect for the man who I was. And I get that today. I don't need that patch to identify myself. I walk into a room. It's Joby Walters and said to Joby Walters out of Arizona, Hells Angels, you know. So, Joby, maybe it would be good. Let's just start at the beginning.
Starting point is 00:26:19 Like, how did you even get into the Hells Angels? What was the, like, how did you even, like, where were you at? How old were you? What was going on? Were you a hippie kind of Grateful Dead kind of guy who morphed into that? Like, what? Tell us the story. How did you get there?
Starting point is 00:26:33 No, it wasn't with Grateful Dead. That's for sure. It was an identity of what you see of me now as an outdoorsman. And I rode before when I got back out of the Army in Ohio, you know, I worked at the Fenzel station before I went to high school and closed it in the night. When I got off school, I'd go to work. And I rode a motorcycle to work. Choppers coming in and, you know, getting gas and all that.
Starting point is 00:26:54 And the rough guys of the Pennzoil station, that we box each other. And I was small, you know. What year are we talking? Like, about what was this? 1972. Okay. I had. Then 73, I shook hands with my dad at the Greyhound bus station, headed off to the Army down in Kentucky, 101. And he said, be a man. And that was the words he gave me. And I said, yes, sir. I stepped on a bus and I come home a man. But when I came home, I had nothing. I, you know, I'd been through some things. I, you know, even drugs, you know. And I chased, I chased for family. I was looking for family when I come out. And I didn't have any. So I hit the road. And I hit the road for a long, long time. stepped in on my life at 15 years old through a prayer after reading the crossing the switchblades.
Starting point is 00:27:39 Here's a rural boy from Ohio, a bunch of rabbits and squirrels with his buddy, plays baseball, basketball, you know, and reading a book about gangs. That right there, I believe, after getting on these podcasts and talking to people at first, that was the seed that was planted on the biker lifestyle that I took over. David Wilkerson, did he write that? Yes, he did. Yeah, it went to New York. Fascinating, fascinating, man.
Starting point is 00:28:04 And a fascinating young man that came from what he did to Christ, you know, and that's where we're going with this, on the one percenters, on the prisoners and everything with my book. This book isn't a love story about just me. It's about how somebody can, you know, with my identity and the things I did and the things that aren't in that book, they can identify with it and they can cut themselves free from it. But anyway, back to that, I ended up over in Arizona and in a park drinking with some bones. My old Harley sat in there with a sleeping bag and rolled dirty clothes. I'd been all over. I hung drywall from Florida to Northern California and concrete and worked here, labor pools and everything, you know,
Starting point is 00:28:46 and gotten some bikers in West Virginia and rode with the Avengers for a while as a warlord and gotten fights with the pagans and other clubs and, you know, and I identified as that. You know, the patch didn't make me. I made it, you know, and it made me a person that later on I didn't like, you know. person that later on was worried about his life and where it was going. And it's in my book, you know, that story right there. But anyway, when I got to Arizona, I went to build, I got a hat.
Starting point is 00:29:16 You know, I helped unload some hay at a stable. And they said, you work hard. You know horses. I said, been around them, you know. Well, they need help here, and you're a good hand. You know, you want a job. And that was when you got so much a month, room and board, and you saddled up horses. It was a dude's stable.
Starting point is 00:29:31 You hit-chook teams to take people on hay rides to a state fry area. and I went and traded that Harley in on a cowboy hat and a vest and a pair of boots and start saddling horses. And when I started that, everything I ever stepped into, I grabbed a hole. I want to ride this one out. And I did. And I was that Wrangler, Packer, Guide, Mountain Lion Hunter, Breaking Colts, rode a couple bulls, got the belt buckle on. That was when I was a hell's angel. You know, I wanted to do that.
Starting point is 00:30:05 I packed for hot-shot firefighters in Snake River in Hells Canyon for the government with a string of mules supporting a hot-shot firefighting crew. And when I was doing that, I was hiding from the government, waiting on my lawyer in Las Vegas to get something going. I went out of there, a pretty good paycheck. But they didn't have to know who I was. I was just packed Station 1 on a radio. But when I built that bike, that's how I met the Hells Angels,
Starting point is 00:30:31 a girlfriend of mine, we pulled together and everything. friends told me after I was in Canada, hunting bears, guiding. I came back with a pocket full money and I thought, I'm going to build a bike again. And men, through all this, there was some ladies in my life that today, I apologize. They were good, good girls, man. You know, it was just me. It was me chasing her eyes and me trying to find family and it was right in front of me the whole time. But the devil had a hold of me for a long time. And then when I wanted to build that bike, I went and seen my friend and sitting there was Hoover, Daniel Serbitt, and he was the president of Cave Creek of the Hells Angels.
Starting point is 00:31:08 And we talked about bikes. Well, Hoover knew the Avengers out of Huntington because they're real heavy up in Michigan, every county, big club, big one-percenter club. I ran with them for a while. And when he told me- What is one-per-s? What's one-percenter? What does that mean? The one-percenter is, you know, way back, you're 100-per-per-per-well.
Starting point is 00:31:27 The Hells Angels and all the one-per-sanders, they didn't. They're that 1% of the 100 that says it a public and or the government, you know, hey, the heck with you, man. We're going to do what we want to do until they get popped. You know, then it's a different story. But that's what 1% means. I was 1% of those people that identified as not getting along with the other 99%, let's just say. So you're building your bike with this guy who is a 1%er. So me and Hoover start hanging out.
Starting point is 00:31:57 And there's building a new clubhouse. And I knew I was going to meet Sonny Barger. And he rolled in and a pickup truck with a woman, Noel. We shook hands and the first words I ever said to Sonny was shaking his hand. He said, I'm Sunny. And I sucked my hand out and I said, cool. You know, like, wow, this is cool. You know, I could see it in his face.
Starting point is 00:32:21 You know, I could see it in his eye. He was elite, you know, which later on I'd identify as that also being elite. It got me in a lot of trouble. And Sonny looked at Hoover and said, where'd you find this guy at? Hoover told him. He said, there's a little more tooling than that. And he looked at me, he said, what are you going to do when you get that bike up? And I looked at him.
Starting point is 00:32:41 I said, I think I'll join your club. And he smiled. And I did. Later on, I asked him to sponsor me, and he did. And I got the bike going. And, man, it was a ride from there on. And there's so much of it with me and Sonny on the road. I spent a lot of time with that man.
Starting point is 00:33:01 And I fought for this club. And we had problems. We had people after some at every point, you know, and I wanted to move to Skull Valley close to the home where my dogs and my horses and my woman was, Marlowe. And so I had waited a year, but I got that going. It wasn't the right people I took with me. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:33:17 Some of them came to get out of the politics in the valley. I understand that completely. I came to be home to be close to myself, my family. And the club, I always just thought it's just a club. It's just a club. But, you know, I didn't identify. Again, that word comes heavy, you know, and I didn't identify it as that. I jumped in.
Starting point is 00:33:39 So, Jace, you got to experience the great outdoors this morning with a two-hunt. First ducks of the year. It's very exciting. Yeah, it's always fun. You know, we're waterfowl hunters. And when you buy a federal duck stamp, it's one of those decisions that has a bigger impact than you probably imagine. You have to have one to hunt, of course, waterfowl, but it also supports one of the most successful conservation programs in our nation's history. Since 1934, duck stamp sales have helped conserve more than six million acres of wetlands.
Starting point is 00:34:13 These wetlands support ducks, other wildlife. Also, it preserves places for our families and future generations to enjoy God's creation. Just go to duckstamp.com, buy your stamp online. You're going to carry the digital version on your phone with you. throughout the hunting season. Then you're going to get the collectible physical stamp in the mail in the spring. So it's your way to not only enjoy the season, but also enjoy the future as well. It's a small step that helps preserve something worth passing on.
Starting point is 00:34:42 Visit duckstamp.com and get yours before your next hunt. That's duckstamp.com. I was just going to say, to somebody who's not familiar with this and just trying to wrap my head around it, because it seems like the hell's angels started from military guys after, I think it was World War II. Yes. And it seemed like there was some kind of documentary or film about Hell's Angels. But they had an apostrophe in between the L and the S.
Starting point is 00:35:16 And of course, the club does not. And because from my view, I thought, well, these, what are these devil worshippers? And I guess the most familiar I ever was, because I was talking about the Clint Eastwood Westerns we were. watch but he also did that movie what were the two movies any which way you can yeah any which way but loose
Starting point is 00:35:39 and there was yeah it was like two or three them and so there it seemed to kind of make a mockery out of motorcycle gangs like they're not as tough as they seem and what I was going to say is because I hear you talk about it was a family you know you had gotten out of the military
Starting point is 00:35:55 which is seems to coincide with how the original Hells Angels It's a brotherhood. Right, right. And like the hell is kind of like justice for, you know, against the government and against various groups. But what it seems like it turned into is like another form of like the mafia, because it gets into all this illicit drugs and running guns.
Starting point is 00:36:24 And so I was just curious on how, you know, the people who are not familiar with how that works, I mean, was that true? Is it like you trying to find a family, but then it turns into all this mischief? Because I thought of the verse when you were talking. Two verses popped in my head. One, we're in the book of James, and it says,
Starting point is 00:36:44 where you have envy and selfish ambition, which sounds like a cousin to just be an individualistic, you know. There you find disorder, chaos, and every evil practice. You know, that's James 316, which it has that in a, and a paragraph of wisdom that is earthly and of the devil,
Starting point is 00:37:06 compared to wisdom that comes from heaven, which then you see these qualities that you probably wouldn't find in that group, which is peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy, you know, all these things. It's funny you went there because I was going to ask Jobi this, because his dad, your dad told you when you left, with too much freedom comes chaos. and you said in the book, Joe, you said, I think I wanted some of both.
Starting point is 00:37:34 And it sounds like to me that you were searching for true freedom, which you didn't find until much later, which you found obviously in Christ, right? I mean, but when you said that, I thought about that burst with that idea of chaos because that's what Jobb's dad told him when he left, you know? Well, that's what I guess my question was, did it more turn into all this mischief, you know, drugs, alcohol,
Starting point is 00:37:59 Jason, women, whatever, you know, getting drunk every night or high. Or was it, you know, how was that balance with, oh, we're a family, we're a club, nobody's going to tell us what to do? I mean, where's the balance in all how that went from the time you joined? I thoroughly understand a question. I'm glad you asked it. It's all about that in the book, you know, as far as, yeah, I'm searching for family. And I found individuals that I liked. And I wrote a lot by myself.
Starting point is 00:38:33 I wrote a lot with Sunny. And something clicked in me, you know, like you're in a half. Is that Sunny Barger, by the way? Yes, sir. I mean, just for reference, I mean, he is the most famous Hells Angel. Yeah. The facto leader. So you're, you're rolling with the upper echelon of the whole organization.
Starting point is 00:38:51 That's what stepped me up. It wasn't, you know, it was elite, man. You know, like I said in another interview, you know. I was riding with Sunny Barger when I started. When I started that motor up, the first person that rode beside me going to church was a meeting was me stopping at Sundays and riding to church with him and asking him, you know, can you bring me up tonight? I'm ready. Now, when you say, hold on, when you say go back to church, you're not talking about, that's what you guys would call the meeting? Yeah, that's what our meeting was.
Starting point is 00:39:22 It was church. Yeah. Because there was kind of a religion in a way. I mean, you know, you think about it. You named it right there. And it was a tip of my tongue. Yeah, it's a religion, man. That's something that you ride for.
Starting point is 00:39:34 And as a whole, I had the feds ask me that when they was trying to get information out of me, you know. I didn't tell them nothing. I went to prison by myself, you know. But I'd had enough of the club because it's individuals within it, you know, that make it and that make problems for the whole outfit. And there's a lot of men in that club that are afraid to get away from it. But back to the gun things and drugs, that's individuals. If it was charter, I'd be pretty flush. I'd have got in on that back on Monday.
Starting point is 00:40:04 And I didn't do a drink or a drug when I was in the club. Yeah, I found that fascinating that I wrote down. You quit drinking and smoking like seven or eight years before you got into, you got your patch. In 93. Yeah, yeah. 92, I'm sorry, 92, yeah. Which, you know, I was thinking about it, Joby. It would make you a dangerous man.
Starting point is 00:40:24 It reminded me in my dad. He used to run a bar before. before he came to Christ. And dad would drink and cut up and stuff with his buddies. But when he was running that bar, I remember it well because I was a little kid there. He was stone cold sober. And the reason why was because everybody else was drunk,
Starting point is 00:40:42 but he had to be the enforcer to what went on there at that bar, which made him a very dangerous man to be sober when everybody else was drunk. And when I was reading that in there for you, I thought, because you were an enforcer as well. And I just thought, I bet that made Joe be a dangerous man. that you were sober when other people may not be. Is that true?
Starting point is 00:41:01 I can see trouble coming before it even got there, buddy. Yeah. And I added up all the hurt and the pain that I caused, you know, with me, myself, my family, you know, and it added up to drugs and alcohol. I wasn't an addict. I just party favorite. And I, you know, I'd go off at any time, you know,
Starting point is 00:41:18 and I did. So I quit that. And, yeah, I didn't do any drugs with the club. And I wrote with Sunny on his book signing chores as bodyguard. I rode with him, ate with him, slept in the same room with him with the motels. And I had his back the whole way. And that, I enjoyed that being on the road with just him and or me myself, that freedom to win in your hair. You know, that's what they say. You know, freedom of the open road. I find it better horseback now. But yeah, I was like that. I love my freedom and thought
Starting point is 00:41:53 about it. You know, on the road, look at me. And it ended up causing problems with, with, within the club with me later on. Jay Dobbins, ATF, Ilful created us. He was my prospect. So what does that mean? He was your prospect for the audience. Tell them what that means. Yeah, yeah. We brought him in. We needed numbers in Scholarly. I lost to people. So you are recruiting someone into the club, not knowing that it was an ATF agent, which ultimately led to your arrest and led to you going to prison. Is that correct? Yeah, I got some guys together and beat them up. before I had got them in if I knew they were last.
Starting point is 00:42:30 So you're in prison now and you're not. Let me say something before because there was a very interesting moment that happens in the book. I feel like just from reading your book, Toby, that when the federal agent surrounded the bus, and I know there's a lot leading into that, but people read that in the book. And you were there at a moment where finally you had to surrender, literally, surrender yourself. You had a gun, but God is telling you. you to trust him.
Starting point is 00:42:58 That's what you said. You heard the voice that said, trust him in the moment. So you didn't use that gun and go out in the blaze of glory, but you also wouldn't kneel because you said you only would kneel to God. So if you've paid attention to,
Starting point is 00:43:14 you know, this podcast a lot, we're pretty intentional about what we're doing, whether the kind of music or kids listen to, movies, entertainment that comes into our home,
Starting point is 00:43:21 but it's not just those things. We also worry about what kind of chemicals are you bringing in your home as well? Branch Basics uses plant and mineral-based ingredients and is fragrance free. So it's made to be a safer option to use around your family, including your kids,
Starting point is 00:43:35 your babies, and your pets. We're using it at the house right now. It was started about three women whose own health experiences made them rethink the everyday products that they were using. So it's one solution that you can dilute differently for different uses. And I like the system because it really just keeps things simple. Instead of having a cabinet full of different products and surface cleaners, you can reuse the bottles.
Starting point is 00:43:57 You can restock the concentrate when you run out. You can pick up the concentrate right at Target, Amazon, or branchbasics.com. Branch Basics offers more than just surface cleaning, too, with products like microplastic free dishwashing tablets. They've got laundry detergering. If you have sensitive skin like my niece does, I'm telling you, this has made a big difference in our home. Branch Basics is available at Target, Target.com, Amazon, branchbasics.com, and for the Home Essentials kit, you'll get 15% off at Branchbasics.com with the code, unashirectional. shame. That's code unashamed for 15% off the home essentials kit at branchbasics.com.
Starting point is 00:44:36 And after you purchase, when they ask you, where you heard about them, please make sure that you mentioned this show. And I found that fascinating because I feel like in that moment, it looked like to me, that's when you finally came to that point of surrender with everything, right? I mean, is that fair to say? I mean, I know there's a lot of points in your life, but that felt like that reading your book. When that bus landed in Georgia, me sneaking off, you know, and I was headed back. I was going to see Angie, and then I had plans to catch a boat across to Mexico, and then I had a way to get back up where I was.
Starting point is 00:45:13 But I wanted to get out of the country. I had ID and stuff, but I was told on, yeah, in that bus, when everybody, I talked to Angie on the phone, and I was arriving, you know, and she said, there's police everywhere, and they got rifles. And I said, is that a bad part of town, Angie, or what? She says, no, it isn't. I said leave. I said, just drive away.
Starting point is 00:45:34 We'll see what happens, but get out of there. And I knew what was coming. I knew they were there for me. And yeah, when they unloaded the bus, I was sitting in about the middle, and I got up and walked to the back to that benched bench seat, and got in my bag and pulled out that 45, 1911, and jacked shell in it.
Starting point is 00:45:57 And everybody was getting off, got off. And the bus driver looked at me, And I just didn't say nothing. He just looked down the stairs and probably somebody said something because he walked off. And that's when one of the gang task force all camoed up and face barred, and stuck his nose up over that rail and said, Jobie, we know it's you. You coming off of here or we'll kill you. And I said, well, you may have to.
Starting point is 00:46:23 You may have to. And then that's when, God, what do I do? and that's when it really your true story from you it's really right there and I'm glad you grasp it so the audience can that's truly when God said the divine intervention I'm here man trust me you can't go through this I've changed your life and he and he did and the rest of it's in the book and yeah I just I dropped that I dropped that gun in the toilet later on I got another one but I walked off and yeah he said on the ground on the ground I stole him I said I kneel for nobody and one of them grabbed me and slammed me up against the bus, but I did not go to the ground. Yeah. You said you only kneel to God. We only got a couple of minutes left, Shelby, but I want you to tell people what your mission is now, because I found that fascinating as well.
Starting point is 00:47:10 You feel like God has obviously rescued you and brought you into, you know, something different for your life. And so what is your mission now for the rest of your life to do to reach people? Because you have a pretty noble goal. I'm a righteous of Christ Jesus, man. And he put me in a place when I came out and I surrendered to God. And I asked him, why clear out here, man, with everything I got going on. I love it, though.
Starting point is 00:47:34 No church. The church is mine. My outdoors is my church. And God told me, he said, you get to know me better. And then I do know him a lot better today. And it was the calling for this book. My goal, there's two things in life, man, that I think you all need to hear in a couple more statements. Before we go is you got to understand.
Starting point is 00:47:55 where you're going to go when you die, think about that. Whoever you are out there and whatever you're going through, let's say prisoners, addicts, alcohol, bikers, one percenters, a place that you don't belong. Think about where you're going to land and it should be in heaven. That's number one. And number two, I believe it depends on how many you can take with you and that was my calling. I came from the dredges and God helped me get through it. I was a smart man. I was moved by family. I was moving by identity. I was chasing horizons until I landed with Lord. And by grace, mercy, you know,
Starting point is 00:48:32 and the faith I have in him, he brought me through that. And I look, I have to look back on it every day. It was a way of life. During the day goes by that I don't think about somebody in that club or what I'm doing. My goal is to reach. I don't care if it's one, but I say a thousand, you know, turn your life to Lord. Yeah. Wings aren't going to sprout. You know, form a halo over your head. But if you're not afraid of nothing and you put your life on the line for something that's on your back
Starting point is 00:48:59 or something somebody else did over there and you got a target, you're nothing but a target out there, you know, but you need to be released from it. If you're scared, what are you scared about, man? You know, you've been through all of that. Reach out for the Lord, let him talk to you, and you'll get away from that. But it'll be hard for a moment when you peel that weight
Starting point is 00:49:18 off your back, but it'll be a different life if you give your faith, if you have faith, grace comes on you, and God starts guiding you. And my statement to that is, I don't have what you need. I don't, but I know who does, and his name is Jesus. And if I could help you with that, baptize you, jobbwaters.com, follow me. You want to talk to me? You need to talk to it's all there. My team is an awesome team, and God has led it in all.
Starting point is 00:49:49 We've prayed for everything in its chapters. We've made some wrong decisions with other people, but we moved forward. And this book isn't a love story. It's about divine intervention. It's about grace. It's about how God took somebody from what I was doing into dredges, man, unafraid, dangerous, you know, but loving. And that's what people want. I know that's what you want out there.
Starting point is 00:50:12 Three things. You want love, you want respect, and you want forgiveness. And God can give you that. And then what's a blessing? You get grace. What do you do? You pass it on. That's so good.
Starting point is 00:50:22 That's my goal. Let somebody read this book, change your life, and let's see where God leaves us from that. That's my answer to that. Thank you, Joey, for coming on. We respect you, and we're so thrilled that you surrendered and that you found true freedom and peace instead of chaos, like your dad told you. The book is called Cut Free, Hell's Angels Ride to Redemption. So we pray with you and pray blessings.
Starting point is 00:50:48 upon you and ask you to keep doing what you're doing, my brother. Hey, I'm there with you, man. God bless you guys. Thanks for having me. I hear you and I feel you. Brothers in Christ, man, you know. And if you want to talk again, man, holler at me. I love y'all.
Starting point is 00:51:03 Thank you, Joe. We love you, buddy. We may be, show up out there to ride a horse one day. We're going to get you to teach us out. I tell you what, let's burn a stake and go out to the rock house and set up, set a wind and saddle up early in the morning, turn the dogs loose. Let's go make your circle. There you go.
Starting point is 00:51:17 I like it. It'd be like, take care, brother. Thanks for listening to The Unashamed podcast. Help us out by leaving a rating and review on Apple Podcast.
