I am unashamed. What about you?
Welcome back to Unashamed. I'm a little out of sorts here. Maddie is, as I get older,
so I'm a person of habit and I'm a creature of...
Oh, you moved. I moved. Maddie moved me. And the reason why she did it was she said,
this, my seat, which is normally here to my left, if you're listening, is more flattering
when we have women on.
Oh.
And I don't even know what that means.
Yeah.
Because I thought it was me making the seat.
Well, you said it.
Didn't get it.
So I was like, okay, since it's my beautiful wife that's sitting in that chair, I want her as flattering as possible.
Well, now the beauty part I understand.
Yeah, me too.
We want to highlight that.
Yeah.
That's why they have you there, side.
That's the least flattering.
I'll fix that.
That way I'm out of the shadows because there's no beauty here.
So we got Lisa on today, which was planned.
Now, Sa was not originally planned, but we had such a fun time yesterday recording.
So I had to come back.
Here's what's interesting, Jay's.
I guess now we're conditioning, Cy to move to unashamed because he came on our podcast yesterday.
He was supposed to do a duck call room yesterday at one.
And I go out there and they're all standing around.
I said, what are y'all doing?
And they said, we're waiting on side.
Well, I see that my phone is messed up.
Our house phone is dead.
Let's be honest.
You don't know how to use the phone.
Everything at the house is going dead.
My refrigerator is gone, okay, and we've, that's been three months now.
Yeah.
Okay.
And then Christine said, well, what's wrong with it?
And they still got a couple of little wires that are not doing what they're supposed to.
You know, and I said, well, get two wires and that we'll do what's supposed to.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, they don't have any.
So, you know, you should be an expert on having a couple of wires
It's not doing what they're supposed to
Just a couple of loose things that aren't quite connected
Part of our family has had dementia and stuff
And everybody said, well, hey, he's had that stuff
But I tell people all the time, I said if it's a medical problem
I've had them all.
Yeah.
You know?
You had a heart attack?
You've had all.
I've had them all.
You know, I said, you know, my, I said, I said, I've had that dementia.
all my life.
So, hey, he was born with it.
He was born, so there ain't no big deal.
So once we got used to it, it was just out.
And, Si, if the Lord blesses you for another round this year to April,
and then you go one month past that, you will be the longest living of the Robertsons of your generation, which is amazing.
That is amazing.
You know, we would have never thought that because when you had that heart attack, we thought you were done all those years ago.
That's what's so funny.
And I hate doctors.
Okay, and Christine, you don't understand.
You don't mean hate as in hate.
You mean like Jesus, love less.
You love them less than others.
Well, I just, you know, I don't like visiting them because every time I visit them,
there's something bad wrong.
Yeah.
Okay.
Which is really why you go.
Maybe that's why.
Christine don't understand it.
I said, well, woman, look, you keep telling me whenever I go,
finally it gets so bad, I got to go hold the doctor.
it's bad when I see the doctor.
I said,
you know, the doctor said, it's not them.
It's you, sir.
Yeah.
And I said, you know, when the doctor was telling me about all this, you, well, how can
I help you, Mr. Robertson?
I said, you can't.
I said, because I said, look, I've, I've been, you know, what I call healthy all my life.
I said, now you're telling me.
I said, I got one question to ask you.
I said, does this procedure really have to be done?
And he said, if you want to live, it does.
I said, well, I guess we're going to have to do it then.
You're like me, unless it's life or death.
Yeah, if it ain't life or death, forget it.
I'm going to go without it.
I mean, this is the guy that had the ruptured appendix for eight days, right?
So I'm going to give you some advice.
Do we have to go down that, right?
Well, no, no, I was saying that Robertsons are the worst about having any kind of
human loving feeling for someone in pain.
Not much on the compassion.
Yeah, we're not a compassionate.
And I think that came from
Paul and Granny.
Well, no, no, because I've always said, you know,
because the whole family has a different view of my mother.
You know, everybody else in the family thinks she's nuts and crazy.
No, she's not.
She's married to James A. Robertson,
and they have seven wild Indians that she bore for him.
You know, I'd drive anybody nuts.
That's exactly right.
You know, and I said, hey, really what it was,
mom was really sharp because, hey,
whenever she needed the break,
she would do something real wild,
like shootout Christmas lights with her 22,
and then Daddy would put her in a nut house,
and she'd get a vacation.
Yeah, that's right.
You know, we're aired in the early Robertson Laundry today
on the Unashamed Party.
Yeah.
I'll make my living in the evening news.
Did y'all talk about yesterday's side singing on the airplane?
Oh, yeah.
Oh, my word.
That was hilarious.
In James, it says, hey, if you're cheerful, sing songs.
Sing sounds a play.
Well, hey, I'm so joyous in my soul that I can't help it.
He was doing midnight in Montgomery.
That's right.
Hank's always playing there, boys.
I'm scared to look up the lyrics of that song.
I didn't even want to do it.
It's a good, clean song.
Oh, all right.
The stewardess was like, can y'all control him?
Martin said no.
That has been the age-old question about Roberts and men since I've been around.
And what's your answer to that, babe, since you're married to one?
There's no control.
It's like the Mississippi River.
You try to kind of, you just kind of try to educate.
You can't, you know, you just try to stay within its base.
You just move them a little bit.
The stewardess should have deducted that after your conversation with the gate agent.
that you're not controllable.
Well, she was not privy to that.
No, that's right.
She was on the plane, so she was not privy to that.
She wasn't even the gate agent.
Apparently, she was the percentage of people's oxygen charger.
No, no, because what it was, the lady that was running the gate,
seeing my name an oxygen, and she called because she didn't know.
Oh, so that person showed up on a call from the gate.
Hey, I seen her coming from way down.
It was her and a guy.
And she was mad.
And I said, uh-oh, this is trouble.
And then when she's come up and said, what's your scale on your oxygen machine?
And I said, what's the purpose?
I said, what far?
I said, it don't make different.
I don't need it.
And she said, well, you're not going to get on the plane because you've got to have it 100%.
I said, wait a minute, lady.
Who's got the problem here?
I said, I've got the problem.
And I'm not telling you, I'm good to go.
Yeah.
You diagnose yourself and you're good.
Oh, yeah.
You know, hey, I said, this is Dr. Robertson talking.
And how many times have you flown?
No, no.
And nobody has ever questioned that.
No, no, that's what I'm talking about.
That's what Philip is.
You know what you should have saying in that moment.
And the rule is you've got to have a battery fully charged.
And I said, lady, it's never going to be fully charged because, hey, when I need a hit of it, I take it.
Yeah, it's 99.
And I said, and I said, you're talking about you're going to keep me here.
I said, guess what?
My charger is in the belly of the plane.
I said, I've never going to leave this here.
It is still funny, though.
It's still funny today as it was yesterday.
And it was Saturday night.
But what did we say?
Rules are made to be broken.
I said, hey, look, them rules are made to be broken, okay?
And I said, this one here is a silly one.
Yes, it is.
Forgiveness.
That's what you get up.
Here's where you messed up.
You should have in that moment, you should have went,
dun dun dun dun.
No, no.
There's a song.
Don, dun, dun, da, no, no.
Love is like oxygen.
Love is like oxygen.
What's the words of that?
You get too much.
You get too high.
You get too high.
Not enough and you're going to die.
That's right.
Yeah.
One of the best opening guitar riffs of any songs.
That's right.
Look at the statute of limitations.
We need to have that as to send out.
That's why my handler, Philip McBellon, that's why he knows me.
So I was upset, okay?
So he hands me his earmust that plays music.
Okay, that's where the singing came in.
The earmuffs that play music.
Once I had it on and the music started, well, I just went back to be as myself.
Okay, I'm going to let my joy, you know, go forth.
You should have just looked at Philip and said, handle it.
Well, no, no, no, because Philip was patting me.
He said, tell, slat, slat,
Yeah, but that's not handling.
Yeah, it was.
He was handling it.
Yeah, evil town and me.
Well, I did the classic Robertson jays.
I just walked by all that and got on the plate.
And I said, you're out there, your uncle's eyes out there trying to get on the plate.
I said, yeah, I hope he makes it.
No, yeah, I love the way everybody walked by.
You all just, pique, peep, peep.
Yeah, we were.
Well, I have to confess, side, most of the times when we're with each other in an airport terminal
or on a plane and people will be like, what's it, what's it like being with that guy?
And I'm like, I have no idea that it is.
I don't, in the moment, I don't even claim.
Although they always ask the question, is he really like that?
And everybody says, no, he's way worse.
You're just getting a very small snippet.
You're getting the edited version.
Yeah, you're getting the edited version.
Well, I had something that's going to warn you soul that happened last night.
You ready for this?
So I got, you know, two sons.
Of course, they're, you know, trying to make a living and provide for the family all this.
Well, I have a daughter who's kind of in-between college, whatever you want to call that adventure.
She graduated, but now she wants to go back.

She told me she needed to just like a little brain reset.
Yeah.
It was really hard, her degree.
And so I need a brain reset and then I'm going to dive back in.
What did she get a degree in?
Psychology.
Psychology, you need to go see her.
Why?
She can't help me.
I think she could.
No, she can't.
No, no, no.
It's psychiatry that she needed a degree.
Or psychology.
That might be her big.
See, I wrote a book about that.
If she figures you out.
Okay, so she can't help me.
This could be her thesis.
Yeah, that could be her life study.
My uncle sigh.
I figured him out.
That I'll do.
That would be really interesting with it, and it will help your daughter, okay?
So she's doing various jobs and making a little money, whatever, but she's, you know, she'll make a bunch if she does me.
Well, exactly.
I'm sure you're going to pay her well.
No, my money.
As long as he's winning in poker, Jay, so he can pay.
So she, but she's been enamored by fishing.
I mean, every couple of days when we're going to fish him, it's 100 degrees.
the water, we're in a drought.
I'm like, it's over.
We can't catch the fish.
But so for her birthday, I got her, which Missy was like, this is the most ridiculous.
Because she said, what, what should we get Mia?
I was like, well, I'm going to hand her a $100 bill.
She'll be good.
Everybody likes that.
I do that for all.
I give Sire a hundred.
And he actually reciprocated that.
Wait a minute.
Well, you got to be around.
You got to be around.
I'm not going to come find you.
I paid Al like a month after.
Yeah, he did, because I wasn't here.
He said it on the podcast, so he was on record.
But what I was going to say is, Missy coming there, I said,
she's a grown woman.
She's fine with the $100.
Oh, no.
Because it's like now that she's back at home for just a little stand,
she was all stressed out about what to get her.
I was like, she's no longer your responsibility for,
I'm representing the family.
She will like the $100 bill.
Everybody likes the $100.
Who doesn't like that out of it?
Missy wouldn't get off of it.
Well, I was like, well, what she's into is fishing.
And she rolled her eyes.
I was like, no, I'm telling you.
Every other day, she's wanting to go fish.
We went a couple times and didn't catch anything.
I said, you know what you need to get her is an electric knife?
And Missy's like, are you kidding?
And they're not cheap.
No, but she did it.
I mean, she went, Mia was so excited.
Well, now, of course, I was like, I told you.
This is where she's at.
And I had two sons.
Did you get a secondary eye roll or did she go with it?
And so, but me, I said, wait till it rains, then we'll go fishing.
She didn't, she didn't do that.
She didn't go.
So she goes and first she catches four by herself, brings them over.
And so she had her little first electric night.
This is about a week ago.
And we ate them.
They were great.
You know, she's enjoying the product.
And she's actually pretty good with the electric knife.
As good as I am, because I always used the butcher night.
Well, last night, I had left my phone somewhere.
I don't even know what I was doing.
But when I saw her, she came in, she had ice chest.
She said, oh, I figured it out.
I found a new spot where she's doing this over at Willie's Pond.
I was like, you see, Willie?
No.
Look, her and a buddy.
So you're teaching her stealth how to be stealth.
Look, her and a buddy had 12 of the biggest crappie that I've ever seen.
Right.
That's what I'm talking about.
And I'm like, what is happening?
Because she's like so much further, we got to wait for it to rain.
She's going to drain with his fun, boy.
But it's somewhere in this moment and the fact that she was trash talking me,
oh, man, my daughter has turned into quite the fisherman.
Right.
And we got out there.
Which is good news for you, because when you train them like that,
Then you just get to eat them.
She can even clean them.
Oh, we went down there, because there was 12 of them.
So me, her, and her and her buddy, I think that's me.
We cleaned the fish, the whole process.
They play music playing, you know.
Then she cooked them all.
I mean, I'm in there sitting on the couch thinking, thank you, Lord.
That's a way and we.
I had that thing the other night when Jay did the doves.
I mean, my favorite game, I didn't hunt them, I didn't clean them, I didn't cook them.
But I ate them.
They were delicious.
So I actually told her, I was like, because she's in that, I don't know what I'm going to do.
And, you know, which job I'm going to take.
I'm like, I think all this happened.
You could be a professional fishing guy.
John was doing it.
What's giving me so much joy reminds of my childhood is she has embraced the whole process.
Because her mom wouldn't even consider the thought of taking a knife and cleaning a fish.
And she don't even want to catch them, touch them.
But she doesn't like to eat them.
She doesn't like to eat them.
But so anyway, I thought I thought she'd get out of that.
When you were mentioned about your kids, Jay, this is interesting.
I don't know if you thought about this because they've all settled in the Nashville area.
And, you know, that's where we came from.
Our ancestors, when they came across, I mean, I don't know, probably going back three generations before our grandpa, came from Nashville.
There's a James Robertson Parkway there, which is named after one of our ancestors.
This is the first time I'm hearing them.
Yeah, they're settling in the old country.
They're just rerouting the Robertsons in that area.
So that's one of the reasons as well.
That's going to change my whole attitude.
Next time I go, I'm going to say, hey, we built this place.
We did.
Get out of my way.
What's that song?
We built this city.
There's another song.
Let's take credit for that.
All right, so the reason size back is because, Jase, you left us with a cliffhanger.
Because we had some guest on in the second podcast yesterday, which, man, those guys
were amazing because they were also in the duck car room.
So whenever that one airs,
I don't know when it's going to drop, Maddie.
So we let this as a cliffhanger.
We're in James 5,
and we were talking about Elijah
because it's actually mentioned twice.
It's first mentioned in the first part of chapter 5
when he says about the prophets, Jay.
He says, he talks about this patience,
which the Wild Brothers,
that was what I was impressed with him,
was their patient. Brothers, there's an example of patience in the face of suffering.
Take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. So he just mentions them generally.
But then when he gets down and he actually talks about it specifically in the last part of the chapter,
he mentions specifically Elijah. Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would
not rain. And it did not rain on the lamb for three and a half years. Again, he prayed and the
heavens gave rain and the earth produced his cross. So he's kind of talking about this
seasonal, because it talked earlier about the rain, the summer rains come, the fall. You've got this
idea of season of suffering is what he's talking about specifically. And then he just kind of mentions
it about the rain, but the story is so dynamic. I mean, that's the heart of it. That's what
happened. But it's way more than that. Like when you go back and read it. And so we asked you guys to
go read First King 16 through 19, which is the backdrop. All right, Jay's. I set you up.
Well, and I was going to set up James 5.
You know, this gets real relational in the last section.
We probably should have done this before yesterday.
Because there's all this talk about the Lord, the name of the Lord, the coming of the Lord.
You know, you're basically representing the Lord.
And this whole book has been about how you treat people.
Yeah.
And when I was looking at the story of Elijah,
what made me have this thought last night when I was studying this?
when he gets to the are any among you suffering because he had just talked about being patient
things not going in your way but i started looking up all the i did a little lexical work as they say
all these words here and trying to get the get the meaning and the one for sick was was uh
interesting because it was basically where it says are any among you sick but it's like a word of
exhaustion it yeah i look that up too it's not i'm
I immediately think physical ailment, but it's more physical, spiritual, emotional, you know, exhaustion,
which makes sense when you think about the, you know, when it comes to suffering.
I mean, it is, think about Joe.
I mean, that whole book, I'm exhausted just reading it his exhaustion from everything that happened
and having to sit around and listen to three guys talk nonsense the whole time about it's all your fault.
And before they showed up, his wife said, why don't you just curse God and die?
Just get it over with.
And then she checked it to him.
We never seen Mrs. Job again.
And so, like, you talk about exhaustion.
If you go through something rough in your marriage, that's exhausting enough.
But look at everything else.
He lost everything he had is kids.
But you mentioned about people talking.
You're talking.
Well, the most important thing you'll ever do is your relationship with God and then with people too.
I feel like we're on the precipice of some cooler weather of real fall.
It's still a little bit hot here, not quite in our comfort zone.
We went from 100 to 90, and everybody was like, ooh, cool front.
And still not really that comfortable.

What side just said is the epiphany I had.
Yeah.
And that, because we're so, you know, we'll go to this verse, this section,
and read them where it says, if you confess your sins, he's faithful and just and we'll forgive us.
But notice, look, it's out of order than how we normally people teach this.
He basically says, okay, if someone is sick, or let's just say, they're spiritually fatigued or whatever,
perseverance is needed but they've been beat down whether it's spiritual warfare or just other people's sin
or oppression whatever it is and he's like the prayer of faith will save the sick and the lord will
raise them up so it's like an inner that's why remember when i said i like that phrase raise them up
it's like a resurrection it's an energize you're because exhaustion energized think think like that
I think that's the concept of the original language,
because ultimately it is about your relationship,
with the Lord and other people.
Then it says,
The prayer of faith, raise them up,
and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven.
Well, you've got your relationship.
The Lord has energized you in that relationship,
and then he just threw that in there.
That's part of the process,
because your relationship has been energized with the Lord.
then it says therefore confess your sins but we usually have that backwards yeah we're like
because we look at everything we look at forgiveness as more just a legal law keeping and oh we have to
uncover it for the Lord so he can know about it so then he can forgive us yeah we already knew you
did yeah he knew you know you see the difference in that yeah and so it made me look up all those
words but even even forgiveness uh you know we tend to think of it just as a as a as a a
legal thing, but there's several ways that that's defined using their words. It's like a blotting it
out on a whiteboard or sending away. That's where you get the idea. That's the most common phrase of
how their word for forgiveness, it's sending away. You remember when they sent the goat out in the
Yom Kippur or whatever, and it took the sins out. It's the same word. We describe it just,
Lisa and I talk about this, is the idea, because he says, in Hebrews it says a couple of times
that I will forgive them and remember their sins no more.
You think, well, how's the Almighty God who's present in everything and all-knowing going
to forget anything?
Well, he does if he sends it away.
The concept is forgiveness is choosing to send it away.
Do you ever forget the worst betrayals of your life?
No.
But when you forgive them and when they're forgiven,
you, then they're sent away, that's how you are energized to your point.
That's what puts the life back into.
Well, that's why I'm bringing all this up, because these are all metaphors.
And you're like, what do you mean?
There's a bigger point that he's describing this relationship.
The relationship is the problem.
If you're like, what is the problem, even thinking about sin or the word for transgression,
they're metaphors.
What's sin?
Missing the mark.
The word for transgression, stepping over the line.
you're like what what is he trying to say
but we tend to think oh I'm illegally made a mistake
because one of the forgiveness words is like a banker
canceling your debt that one's in 2nd Corinthians 5
but it's another metaphor yeah so when you think about liberation
or freedom I'm gonna read these verses because this is all gonna tie back into
Elijah because he makes the point of saying Elijah despite he didn't put
despite all the things he did
he's like he was a human being just like you are because if you read first
Corinthians 16 through 19 he has one of the greatest things he raises somebody from the
dead yeah he lives off uh helps a widow live off bread and and olive oil that wouldn't run out
yeah for however however garden calls it the never-ending salad bowl or whatever but this really
was a never-ending then he literally has a fight between whose god is the greatest resulting in you know
fire coming down from heaven, 450 false prophets being killed at his hand.
I mean, you would think, oh, he's great.
Well, then the next thing that happens, if you read First Kings 19, then he has this,
Jezebel says, well, I'm fixed to kill you.
Well, then he acts like all us.
He runs scared.
He has this exhaustion.
He goes to a cave.
Oh, he's like, I'm done.
Well, that's what he said.
He said, I'm tired.
Yeah.
He said I'm tired.
Yeah, but you were talking about to raise you up, okay, it's the problem of it, okay,
we get it out of order, you know, we don't handle it correctly.
Because when you've got a problem, first thing you got to do is you've got to realize, okay,
I need to put some attention on this and some action.
Mm-hmm.
You know, and that goes with what God said was, I will raise you up.
If someone's sick, you've got to address the issue.
Yeah, exactly.
I need help.
Exactly.
But it also shows you the human nature.
And we do the same thing.
We talk about Zach.
Zach reads the comments of stuff, you know.
And I realize people look and sort out what people say about everything we do, say and do.
But it's the one negative comment is the one that sticks in your brain.
And Elijah had all that victory.
But the one he was aimed at the most, Jezebel, who was the, she brought in all this false stuff into,
Israel. She was bad news.
She was bad news. And when Ahab married her, that's what turned his heart, just like other kings.
And the one person he really wanted to convict, she wasn't convicted. And she was still in her
sin. She said, well, I'm going to kill you no matter what. And that was the one thing that sent him
over the edge. All the victory. Even Ahab listened to him. All the victory, but it was the one voice.
And that's human nature. We do the same thing. Somebody doesn't like us or we get a negative comment.
And we're like, why, and why should the one negative bother us like it does?
But it does.
It's just we're not built to take that negativity.
So my whole point for bringing this up was at the end of the day, it's about faithfulness.
And so when you look at God's part of the relationship, he is relentlessly pursuing us.
Even in Elijah with that, he didn't say, well, what happened here?
He then gave this illustration about, I was with you with all this fire and wind.
That was the concert.
It was an earth wind and fire.
And he's like, but I'm with you in a gentle whisper.
And he's now whispering to him in a cave.
It's very fascinating.
It's a very fascinating.
If you read that, I don't say how you can't say, oh, wow.
I mean, who could come up with this outside of the almighty God?
We got to get that movie made.
I know they're doing the Daniels stuff.
We've got to get that movie made because that would be a movie.
Oh, it's just phenomenal.
You know, we can read some of it.
But what I was going to say is, so what?
the picture of James, I didn't really get this till last night, because we've gone through this whole
book, and most of it's been negative about how you use your tongue and you're ripping each other
and James 4, where he's like, you want something, you don't get it, you bite, devour, kill,
and covet. But he uses that word where I got this idea is when he calls him an adulterous.
that's why I said ultimately it's about your relationship he was like friendship with the world is
being adulterous towards God and so I think at the end of the day he said when you gather up
instead of biting devouring being selfish you know following the ways of the earthly wisdom
y'all gather around because there's two relationships here which echoes what jesus said on the sermon on the
mouth love God with all your heart soul mind there's your your faithfulness to that relationship and love each other
So you see this picture of people gathering around other people that are suffering that are exhausted,
that whatever trouble they have, whether it's physical, spiritual, emotional.
And you're praying with them.
You're confessing sin.
You're loving on them.
You're having that relentless passion in love that God has for us.
I think that's the picture he gets.
And he gets to the last one, which we haven't talked about, when you see someone wandering
off and you gather around and say hey where are you headed you're going the wrong way you're
being unfaithful well the thing about it is you got two choices okay you can either go negative
and and i've done a a interview about my brother since he passed away they said okay well tell us
about your your relationship with phil and that was the best interview i've ever done because i realized
I don't go negative.
And that's the human beings problem.
Just like you said, the two greatest commandments is love God with everything you have
and then love your neighbor as yourself.
Well, why would you come and, you know, when it says, okay, someone's sick.
You're supposed to come to his aid when you run up on that.
Why go negative and say, you know, you'll be all right?
You know, that's why James says, hey, look, don't give me lip service.
Yeah.
I've got a problem, and I need you to help me with it.
You know, and then if we're doing what we're supposed to do as Christians, as disciples of Jesus,
we're supposed to do just what Jesus said.
When Jesus seen somebody in pain or in trouble, he helped them.
You know, and that's the whole thing about a relationship.
So, Jace, have you been using your Brunt workwear lately?
I did.
The only reason I don't have them on today is because I encase them in mud.
They're my go-to work boots for any kind of project.
So we've been wearing Brunt, workwear,'s Marin, and Omen boots.
They're built for whatever you throw it.
I'm including mud, Jase.
Brunt builds its products around what real tradesmen need,
comfort, durability, and gear that can take a beating. When you're dealing with cold mornings, rain,
mud, slick job sites, that's when having the right gear really matters. Brunt has waterproof,
safety toe, soft toe pull on and lace up boot options that can handle everything. Their boots are
tough but comfortable from day one, so you don't have to deal with that painful break-in period.
And Brun isn't just boots. They have workwear as well. You can even wear the gear to work and try it out
risk-free. If it's not right for you, send it back.
for a full refund. That's how confident that Brunt is. Brunt was tired of the workwear brands out there
cutting corners. You work too hard to be stuck in uncomfortable boots and workwear that just doesn't hold up.
So they built something better. Workware that's insanely comfortable and built for any job site.
For limited time, our listeners get $10 off at Brunt when you use the code unashamed at checkout.
Just head to bruntworkware.com. Use the code unashamed and you're good to go.
And after you order, they'll ask you where you heard about Brunt. Do us a favor.
and tell them it was from our show.
I've said this before,
and we used to do the,
make a wish every quarter back when we were doing the show,
and they would bring kids here in their families.
And these are sick kids.
A lot of them had terminal, cancer and all this.
But I always said, all of us, like, struggled in it
because it's so hard to see and be a part of it
without feeling down.
But you, I thought, were our leader in the fact that we've got to bring joy.
Like, these people are coming here because they love this show.
And they're going through a rough time.
And so we're going to laugh and we're going to have some fun.
And that first time I remember how hard it was.
But then we realized that was our job.
Our job is to do just what you just described,
to bring joy into a tough situation.
Because I had in like when the first time it happened, like we said,
we didn't know what to do.
No, it was so hard.
This kid is just beginning life of crying out loud.
And he's been hit with, you know, cancer or whatever.
Yeah.
So I hit my knees and says, Father, make me be funny, make me give this child some life.
Joy.
And we did it the whole rest of the way.
Well, God answered your prayer because you're of all our family.
You're by far the best dealing with these kids.
And so I was like, God must have inspired him.
I was to say, that's God answering their prayer.
Yeah.
Because I tell people all the time, I say, hey,
I don't know how you make it without Jesus.
And I don't.
And I'll tell people all the time, I said,
you don't believe in the Father,
Son, the Holy Spirit, for one, for two reasons.
You've never seen him do anything.
You've never seen him.
They don't, they're not real to you.
Yeah.
Well, to me, God has blessed the Robertson family with,
oh, he showed us time.
and time again.
Yeah.
Okay, when we run into somebody like we're talking about,
this got stage four cancer and he's four years old.
Yeah.
But people don't say it because they're not looking.
And I think, because a lot of people use this section in James 5,
it's kind of like a self-help.
You know, if you want to be a better person,
this is making you like Jesus.
Yeah.
And that's the distinction.
He's not writing this so that you can say,
oh, you know, I'm a better version of myself for all these things we use.
I got a thing to add.
This is how to become like Jesus, and we're going to see it through this story in Elijah.
I'm going to add this to it, okay.
We don't speak enough about the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
Self-control, love, kindness, joy, peace, goodness, all that stuff.
Patience.
Yeah, all of that.
Yeah.
Look, you're not going to get that.
if you don't have a relationship with Jesus Christ,
the Father and the Holy Spirit,
you're not going to get,
that's not available to you.
Yeah.
I was playing the drums.
Yeah, yeah.
I'm getting fired up because he's getting fired.
Well, look, let's go through this
because we're going to run out of time if we don't.
Before you do, I want to say something about that, James.
So you're looking here and he's talking about if you're in trouble,
if you're happy, if you're sick.
and then you pray for them
and you come together and you pray for them
and I think
because it says that
at the last
the Lord will raise them up
and if they have sin
they will be forgiven
therefore
I think the therefore
is don't stop there
every time you have trouble
every time you are sick
and tired
every time you're happy
share that with your brothers
allow them to
pray for you. Therefore, your sins will be forgiven and you'll be healed. I think he's just saying,
look, I'm showing you right here. This is what you need to do. But don't stop there.
Find somebody that you can always do this with. Yeah. Well, that's why I brought it up.
I think you've hit on the point, because it is about a relational, you're either faithful or you're not.
If you're going out to the world and befriending the world to try to find your self-help answers,
Well, you're committing adultery against the Lord God and his people is basically what he's giving you the picture of you.
Here's what you're saying.
Every time that I'm down, Jesus has always had his hand out and talking about, hey, get up.
Get up, dust you off.
Let's go.
Let's go.
What Lisa did it this morning.
I mean, I looked out on my phone, and we have some neighbors down in Gulf Shores that are going through something.
And Lisa's like, oh, I had it on my calendar to make sure and pray for today.
is this still happening?
And they're like, oh, yeah, thank you so much for the prayer.
I mean, that's thinking all the way down the line of other people that are going through things.
That's why prayer works.
You hit the nail on the head, okay, because, hey, we're never to stop that.
Yeah.
Because Jesus will never stop it.
What does he tell us?
He said, hey, I'm with you till the end of the ages.
Yeah.
You're never alone.
I'm always with you.
That's right.
But you know, if you do this.
That's the greatest thing that in a world that the purpose could hear.
Exactly.
But if you do this, would you all away?
Yeah.
If you confess your sins one to another, when you're in trouble, when you're happy, when you're sick.
If you do this, then you don't ever get to a point where you're hopeless.
Well, you know, you never go negative.
That's right.
You're always positive.
You know that you've got people that are always praying for you.
And whenever you confess that sin, God takes it away.
And you walk on and you don't have to worry about that one.
So you keep going.
Well, Jesus is your best friend.
And really, if we're good disciples of Jesus, we need to be your best friend.
That's right.
That's a great point is.
But it takes, you know, our surrendered spirit, sacrifice, time-consuming.
You've got to give up me.
I've got to get me out of the way.
Now we're talking.
All right, so look, first kings, we're going to go through this real quick.
So when he is in 16, or is it 17?
The end of 16 is when Ahab rises to power.
Okay, and so then 17.
And then just describes how bad he is,
but mainly because he married a woman, again, this idea about bringing in,
we talked about it with Solomon too,
bringing in all this bail worship and all that.
That's what's landed Israel in a pickle here.
Yeah, and keep in mind, this is,
So it's just one little verse in James 417.
When Elijah, he's a human being just like us,
he prayed fervently that it might not rain.
And for three years and six months, it did not rain on the earth.
Then he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain and the earth yielded its harvest.
You're like, oh, okay, well, that's, yeah, the access, the portal to God is open.
When you read the story, that was a small summation of what happened.
First of all, in chapter 17, he's fed by ravens.
Yep, I was just read that.
I mean, and look, there's a big point there, Judge, that it's subtle.
But by Elijah removing himself from Ahab and the king, that was taking the voice of God away as well.
So him hiding out, you know, that was part of the purpose of God hiding him out because there would be no word of the Lord that would come during this famine and this, you know, no rain.
So they're trying to find him everywhere
because they're like, we've got to hear from God, what's going on?
But God said, no, no, no, you're not going to hear from me
because you're living adulterously to the point.
I always love the way to tell you, you know, go find the man of God.
You need to go talk to him.
Yeah.
Well, and I got it.
So that was part of the reason he hit out.
So look, here's what's fascinating.
So the verse 6, the Ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning,
meet in the evening, he drank from the brook.
So then sometime later, the brook.
the brook dried up. It's kind of like our little joke we always do. Yeah, because there had been
no rain. And the word of the Lord came to him. We'll go to this Sarah, Sarah Fath in the region.
Well, look, he's leaving the Israel community here. He's finding a Gentile woman
widow way off out in the middle of nowhere. That's significant because Jesus in Luke 4 is going to
bring this up. Yeah. So that's why I'm pointing it out. So when he got there, and that's when we got
into the bread that didn't run out, verse 12.
She had enough food for her last meal for her and her son.
Then her son dies, and she's like, well, I thought God was on your side, and he's like, okay,
he goes up, raises a kid from the dead, which is the first resurrection.
And if you're reading the Bible from Genesis to all the way, this dude comes back from the dead.
So now you're thinking, if I'm Elijah, okay, that's now a possibility.
which is going to go into how he left the earth, I believe.
He had already figured out, oh, his death is no big deal,
which is why when he's sad, when he's running for his life,
I think reading in between the lines there,
I'm fast forwarding to First Kings 19,
he's now realize, well, go ahead and take my life.
I know.
I mean, I did all that.
Yeah, I've done all that.
So eventually, oh, he did, but he didn't even have to die.
He just took him up.
So you have all that happen.
And so then the story that's fascinating, verse 18, when you get to chapter 18.
So after a long time, the word of the Lord came to Elijah.
Go and present yourself to Ahab.
So this is the battle, and I'll send rain on the land.
Now, there was a famine.
It was severe in Samaria.
Ahab had summoned Obadi, his administrator.
He was a devout believer in the Lord.
Jezebel was killing off the Lord's prophets.
and Obed I had hidden some prophets.
Like a hundred prophets he is.
Which is going to be significant because Elijah either was choosing not to realize this
because he makes a statement a couple times, which he was wrong, saying,
I'm the only one left.
He was kind of in his self-pity in the First Kings 19 saying that.
Which also shows you a remnant philosophy, Jays.
There's always people out there you don't know about that are people of God.
There's a great lesson in that.
Sometimes you feel like I'm the only one left.
No.
No, God's got some more out there.
He just hadn't connected you yet.
So recently, we signed up for a service with our business,
and I could not get a customer service person on the phone, literally.
And then they maybe go through an email chain,
which then took time to respond back.
And after about two weeks of this, I said, I'm done.
And I can't imagine how many businesses are losing customers
simply because they don't have someone who can answer the phone,
which is why I'm excited to tell you about today's episode,
which is brought to you by Quo, spelled QUO.

dot com slash unashamed that's q uo dot com slash unashamed so it gets down to now here's this fascinating
when you get down to verse 16 we have we have a standoff here they're believing in uh bail
their gods jesabel and uh a who is it ahahah abe and so here's kind of by the way this bail stuff
is like this uh thing we talked about with the wild world it's it's animism the spirits of all these
things of the earth and everything's about the crops and you sacrifice children to the gods of
this, that and the other. It's a very dark. It's just getting really dirty. Really bad. So their own
Mount Carmel, this is verse 16. If you look up there, which I looked up the Hebrew word for that,
guess what that means? Garden. Oh, yeah. Well, that takes us back to where we've done all through
the Bucking James to the beginning. God does some things on cosmic. There's some cosmic happenings
on mountains, which I believe it's because this heaven and earth portal, well, the mountains
is the closest place to that connection of heaven and earth.
Which is why I pray on every plane trip, because I'm 35,000 feet above the earth.
I feel like I'm a little closer for whatever reason.
So my prayer life is great on an airplane.
So, and then, I mean, we have to read a little bit of this because it's hilarious.
I'll just read verse 21.
and Elijah went before the people and said,
how long will you waver between two opinions?
If the Lord is God, follow him,
but if bail is God, follow him.
But the people said nothing.
And so then they have this standoff.
And so the bail worshippers,
they start doing all their things to get fire
come on these altars.
They're slashing themselves.
chanting, dancing.
So then when Elijah, of course,
theirs didn't work.
Nothing happened.
bail didn't show up he didn't set fire to the altar and it was a fire test now Elijah taunted him
he was oh he taunted maybe he's in the bathroom yeah I'll read that 27 I got to read this at noon Elijah began to
taunt them shout louder surely he's a god perhaps he's in deep thought or busy maybe traveling maybe he's
sleeping and sleeping and must be awake it so they shouted louder and they slashed themselves with swords
And midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening
sacrifice, but there was no response.
Then Elijah said, come here.
And so Elijah, he took 12 stones, one for each tribe from Israel, to whom the word of Lord
come.
That's that thing, Jay.
You remember talking about the anointing of the places as much as the people?
I love that idea of the 12 stones coming as a representative of the 12th.
He goes all the way back.
With the stones, he built.
altar. This is verse 32 of 18. He arranged the wood, cut the bull because they each had a bull as a
sacrifice, laid it on the wood. He filled four jars with water, poured it on the offering and the
woods. So he doused it. I mean, you know. And remember this is during a three and a half year
drought. Oh yeah. The idea of just having that water poured out was a big deal. You don't wash water.
Then he did it three times. 35. The water ran down the altar, even filled the trench at the time of
the sacrifice.
Elijah stepped forward and prayed,
Lord the God of Abraham, Isaac, Israel,
let it be known today that you're God in Israel
and that I'm your servant.
And I've done these things at your command.
Answer me, O Lord, so the people will know.
Then the fire, verse 38 of the Lord, fell and burned up the sacrifice.
And so it proved.
And the stones and the soil.
It burned everything.
And then it even trained out that water out of that.
We're talking about divine fire.
So then he led them down, took the 450 false prophets, they died.
And so then when he goes to chapter 19, this is what I think James had in mind.
So Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done.
I mean, Elijah won.
Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah and said,
may the gods deal with me be it ever so severely,
if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.
And then verse three, Elijah was afraid.
It's shocking.
And I think when James said he was a human being, just like we are, and he had this great thing happen,
and that led to this conversation with God, which I love what God asked him twice somewhere in here.
Because he flees, he goes to a cave, and the Lord appears this is verse.
Yeah, what are you doing here?
Which is the second question I ask all people about being a human being.
How did you get here?
what are you doing here?
What's your purpose?
Whatever we're at.
Yeah.
What's your purpose?
And how are you leaving?
What's next?
Which he left in a whirlwind, you know, God took it.
Hey, I don't want you y'all to miss this, okay, but I'll tell you this.
And I'm going to use my name for God.
You know, bail couldn't bring fire.
Homie don't play.
He bought the fire.
Exactly.
So look, fast forward because we're almost out of time.
But you know what the whisper was, Judge, the whisper was, I'm not done with you yet.
I'm not done.
You got work to do.
There's 7,000 out there.
You can read all the details.
I want to read this.
And Luke 4.
So Jesus goes to his hometown.
And look, he's rejecting his hometown.
And actually, this goes back to your not liking doctors.
Because watch what he says.
He came to Nazareth where it had been brought up.
As it was accustomed, went to synagogue.
He stood up to read the scroll of prophet Isaiah.
And here's what he read.
And this gets back to that salvation,
redemption,
uh, forgiveness,
all those things
we were talking about before
that it's a reflection of your relationship.
Because watch what he says in verse 18.
He quotes Isaiah 61.
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me,
which James also brought up about the,
if someone is sick, the anointing.
We said it's not about the oil.
To proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captive.
Look at how he's described in salvation and good news.
Liberty, which is for,
freedom, recovering sight to the blind, energizing you physically.
To set at liberty those who are oppressed.
All these themes in James, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.
God's, he's for you, not against you.
He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the tent, sat down, and the eyes of all in the
synagogue were fixed on him, and he began to say to them, today the scripture has been
fulfilled in your hearing.
I mean, he took what Isaiah said and said, look, this is big.
I'm offering newness to creation.
Jesus is doing what we're talking about here.
Exactly.
The problem has been identified, and Jesus is taking action to deal with it.
So then the people said, is this not Joseph's son?
Wait a minute.
And he said to them, now what's what Jesus said?
Because they're not like, you're from our hometown.
Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb,
physician, heal yourself, which would be a good line for you to tell the doctors.
before you start trying to heal me,
won't you heal yourself?
But his point was,
what we have heard you did at Copernum
do here in the hometown as well.
He's like, why don't you do this?
We're your people.
Do this.
Well, he then quotes Elijah
because the significance of this
is, remember when Elijah,
he couldn't find anybody
who was faithful.
They wouldn't listen.
So he went to this old Gentile widow
off out in the middle of nowhere.
So watch what Jesus says.
Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.
It was hometown filled with Jews.
But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah.
When the heavens were shut up three years and six months, same thing James is referring to.
And a great famine came over the land, and Elijah was sent to this place, Zarifath,
in the land of Saddam, to a woman who was a widow.
and there were many lepers in Israel in that time.
And then he uses the example of Elijah,
which was the purpose of Elijah was to get to the next guy,
which was...
And what I was going to say is then it was forecasted that,
because Elijah handed it off to Elisha,
God took him up,
but then in Malachi, you get this prophecy
about one would come in the spirit of...
Elijah.
Yeah, of Elijah.
Here's what's fascinating.
when when God took him in the whirlwind it was right after he crossed the Jordan yeah you go read the
story that's in i think say king's two well here comes john the baptist where's he at at the Jordan
and here's jesus you know being eventually baptized and then later Jesus says he came in the spirit
of Elijah so just think about these two two guys who were human beings just like we are
who trusted god's plan and what did they both have
in common. They didn't have suits on. They were wilderness guys who had crappy clothes.
And it just makes you look at the big picture of kind of what we've turned our modern church
in today. And it's not about what you wear. It's about God working in you to point people
to Jesus. And I really found it fascinating. So all this culminates when they're on another
Mountain. And now
here Elijah shows
back up and God
has this voice. This is my
son whom I love
in him I'm well please.
Listen to him. Listen to him. They pointed to Jesus
that's what James is doing. He's pointing to our relationship
ultimately with God through Jesus and our relationship
with each other doing these same things that he brought.
Good news to the poor, you know, being re-energized,
all these different things.
And to show you the patience, we're out of time, but to show you the patience of God,
that was 900 years of time that you just described from when Elijah went up to John the Baptist stepping out.
900 years that Jesus will come.
That shows you the patience of God to try to get people to get it right.
We're out of time.
We're out of time.
And the last thing I'll say is don't underestimate the power of prayer.
Because that was when you're praying, things happen.
That's right.
You'll brain the fire.
Hey, everything that we talked about and discussed was for one reason for us to see the glory of God.
Exactly.
Every bit of this was to show, hey, I'm here.
I got you back.
I won't ever leave you.
I'll always be with you.
I love it.
Well said.
There's nothing better.
Great closing statement.
