Welcome back to Unbiased Politics in under five minutes. Let's recap yesterday's episode.
So I started yesterday's episode talking about the SAVE Act, which is the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act.
It passed the House last week on Thursday. It may not pass the Senate though, so keep that in mind.
And it's meant to protect against non-citizen voting in federal elections.
And a lot of married and soon-to-be-married women have questions about it because of the proof of citizenship requirements in the situation where they changed their last name.
So I want to clarify what the SAVE Act would require for proof of citizenship when either
registering to vote or renewing your voter registration.
So when showing proof of citizenship, you must provide one of the following, either
a form of ID that is consistent with the requirements of the Real ID Act of 2005, which also indicates that the applicant is a citizen of the United States,
or a valid U.S. passport, or an official military ID card shown with a U.S. record of service
that also confirms the person was born in the U.S., or another form of valid photo ID
issued by a government body that shows the person was born in the US. If a person does not have any one of those things, any one of those forms of ID, then you must show some sort of a valid government-issued ID, doesn't have to be photo ID, just some sort of government-issued ID, with either a birth certificate, a record of birth, a final adoption decree, a consular report, a birth abroad, a naturalization certificate, or an American Indian card. Keep in mind that a real ID and an ID consistent with the
requirements of the Real ID Act of 2005 are different. A real ID alone does not
always show proof of US citizenship. In other news, the Trump administration and
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced that electronics, including
smartphones and laptops, will be excluded from reciprocal tariffs for now. Secretary
Lutnick said that while these electronics will be temporarily excluded
from reciprocal tariffs, they will eventually fall under tariffs for semiconductors,
which are set to be imposed in about a month or two. The Supreme Court said the Trump
administration must facilitate the return of a man mistakenly sent to El Salvador last month.
Now, the lower court originally ordered the administration to facilitate
and effectuate the return of Abrego Garcia. The Supreme Court just said on Friday, yes, the district
court properly ordered the administration to facilitate Abrego Garcia's return, but that the
lower court has to further define what effectuate means in order to ensure that the court is not
encroaching on the president's exclusive article to foreign powers. The administration has since
interpreted facilitate to mean take actions allowing Abrego Garcia to enter
the United States if El Salvador agrees to release him but nothing more than
that. El Salvador's president said during a meeting with President Trump yesterday
he would not be releasing Abrego Garcia as that would be like quote smuggling a
terrorist into the United States and
Quote president Trump granted the US military
Jurisdiction of a strip of land at the southern border known as the Roosevelt Reservation
Granting military control over the Roosevelt Reservation will essentially give troops the power
To detain people who attempt to illegally cross into the United States
Because that land will be under the control of the Defense Department and become a designated national defense area. President Trump had
his annual physical on Friday, his first since taking office, and the physician
released the memo of the physical results on Sunday. All was normal for the
most part except for slightly high cholesterol which the president is on two
medications for. He scored a normal score of 30 out of 30 on the Montreal
cognitive assessment and a normal range of 30 out of 30 on the Montreal cognitive assessment
and a normal range on the patient health questionnaire nine
and the generalized anxiety disorder seven,
which screened for depression and anxiety respectively.
On Thursday, the House adopted a budget blueprint
in a 216 to 214 vote.
To be clear, a budget resolution does not actually
provide funding for federal programs.
It does not change tax laws.
It does not modify anything at all for that matter.
Budget resolutions instead set targets and guidelines, in this case for fiscal years
2025 through 2034.
From here, specific committees within Congress will start drafting legislation consistent
with the instructions in the budget resolution.
And when those bills get passed, that's when we'll see changes to spending.
And now for some extra quick hitters.
Six women took the first all-female flight into space since 1963.
The helicopter tour company operating the tour that killed six in New York City on Thursday is shutting down immediately.
A man is facing multiple charges after allegedly jumping a fence on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's official residence,
breaking in and starting multiple fires.
The FBI unsealed an arrest warrant for a teenager who murdered his parents in February and planned
to use the money obtained through the killing to assassinate President Trump.
The biggest antitrust case against Metta started yesterday, which centers around Metta's acquisition
of Instagram and WhatsApp.
In a televised cabinet meeting on Thursday, HHS Secretary Kennedy says that HHS will determine
the cause of autism by September, and on Friday, the Social Security Administration announced
that it will allow identity verification over the phone, rolling back a previous announcement
requiring in-person visits.
That is what I have for you today.
Have a fantastic next couple of days, and I will talk to you again on Thursday.
