It's Monday, January 26th, the day the devil was buried in the sea, a little candle for
Starting point is 00:01:19 the spirits. Oh shit. Oh shit. Lisa Yats here. Andre Carter's here. We got ourselves a little Monday afternoon party. Here you go, Casakas. Here you go.
Starting point is 00:01:30 One thing. What? Playing. Licking. Oh shit. For you to justify. Oh shit. You got to justify your existence, bitch.
Starting point is 00:01:39 What? Suck that pipe, motherfucker. It's Monday. For you to justify. Superbowl Week, Anderson Silver Week, but most important, it's your motherfucking week. What? Take that shit, Lee. Wiggle for them, Lee.
Starting point is 00:02:00 Give them a little wiggle. What? Oh. Stop it. Stop it, Lee. Shake that ass. What? Take those shoulders.
Starting point is 00:02:08 There you go, Lee. Get it. One thing. Oh shit. Listen up. Just talk to me. Listen to her, Lee. Tell her her dreams.
Starting point is 00:02:16 Are you lonely? Tell me your fears. Tell them your fears, you dirty bitch. What's happening to people, everything? All right. Look at Lee. He's turning red. He actually is listening to Madonna, believe it or not.
Starting point is 00:02:24 It's creepy. It's not like a song. It's like she's just talking over. It is brilliance at its best. I heard it today on the radio as I was driving back and I'm like, holy shit, this fucking song is powerful. They cut it loose. They cut it loose after the song.
Starting point is 00:02:43 They said it was too risqué, too much bullshit. How you doing, people? It's a beautiful day to be alive. It's all up to you after that. Andre Carter in studio. How's it going? Former NFL fucking superhero and shit. Look at him.
Starting point is 00:02:57 Bad motherfucker all around. What's up with you? I'm doing great. You went to San Diego. I did. You ate like a savage. You got drunk. We haven't eaten like that.
Starting point is 00:03:05 It's kind of fucked up. We can't eat like that anymore. We were eating like we used to be able to eat. We were in pain. It was terrible. But it was delicious. It was great. What did you have?
Starting point is 00:03:14 What did you have? We went down and my buddy owns a burrito place in La Jolla. We went there. Don Carlos. He has four burritos and six tamales to start off. We didn't finish the tamales were for her mom. We went to a barbecue place, Phil's, and then we went to a breakfast place in La Jolla the next day.
Starting point is 00:03:33 We went to Carina's, a really badass Mexican place that doesn't even have English menus. She just ordered. It was amazing. And then we went to Hoda's for some burgers. It was great. There you go. You went to McDonald's. You got drunk.
Starting point is 00:03:48 We got drunk and had the Uber tickets to the McDonald's drive-thru. You went to McDonald's? I haven't been to McDonald's in months. I've been to this guy. He came to the McDonald's. Wow. I used to go. What'd you get?
Starting point is 00:03:57 Just a double quarter pounder. That's it. I think I'm too healthy for you guys. Oh, no, no. I haven't been to McDonald's. I haven't been since July. Yeah. I can't recall the last time I ate McDonald's.
Starting point is 00:04:06 Well, yeah. You can't. I mean, you haven't played for a year or two now, have you? Yeah, a year. Yeah, a year. And you're still, you could probably go out right now. Right now. I feel good.
Starting point is 00:04:16 If they needed a defensive end for the Super Bowl, you could do. You never know. Would they activate you? They could call you like that a weekend? They could call you. Yeah. You hear stories about that just last minute situations, but I'm confident I'll probably be watching the Super Bowl on my couch with my son.
Starting point is 00:04:29 If you'd have heard some, you'd have heard it by now. Yeah, exactly. There you go. They would have called you this morning and said, come on down. Baby, I gotta go. What's up, baby? How's it going, bro? Thank you for having me on the show.
Starting point is 00:04:38 Thank you very much. I know we had talked about connecting and networking and I'm happy to be with you, man. You know, the more I get to see you, like, I'm like, wow, he's like a super human, uh, nice guy. You know, we met at Asians and, uh, you really into it, but just the more I got to see you and you, and then I would talk to my friends and say, you know, Andre Carter's done it with all that motherfuckers, a beast. You know, everybody says you're a beast.
Starting point is 00:05:02 All right, man. Take care. What's up? Credentials. I mean, listen, I, uh, I grew up on linebackers. I grew up when it was cool to be Jack Lambert and Jack Campbell. Period. Yes, sir.
Starting point is 00:05:14 And then I didn't grow up a giant fan, but once I saw Lawrence Taylor and his fury, irrelevant about the drugs or whatever, I'm talking about when this man was on the field, it did something to you. I still remember when they wore their home whites and one game on Thanksgiving one year, he intercepted it and ran it for a touchdown. Yes. My head almost exploded like going, what type of, like I learned to play a linebacker position a certain way.
Starting point is 00:05:38 I know. This guy is doing something that I get thrown off the team if I did, like if I cheated the way he did, the certain things he did. So it really made you think outside the box as a linebacker. You did. And, uh, you know, I remember watching you play, but more when you were a Redskan. Yes, sir. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:57 Yeah. When I was a linebacker, but for most, I'm sorry, two years on my career, I played linebacker for the most part, which is, for me, in my world, it's kind of the same. Yeah. Just got your hand in the dirt. They just put you in a cage on Friday and let you out on Sunday in a cloth bottle. Let the dogs hunt. You know, a couple of tendencies.
Starting point is 00:06:14 They like to run on third down. That's it. And that's all you fucking need. That's it. When I was in high school, there was this kid that was like, great linebacker. He came up from Jersey city and all these schools were looking at him, but, you know, he came from a fucked up home run. He didn't have a chance.
Starting point is 00:06:30 He just didn't like school. And I remember one day, the coach, nice going, can we take a ride? We got to go talk to Georgie. You got to talk to him. He won't show up for practice. Yeah. And we went to his house. I mean, knocked on the door.
Starting point is 00:06:41 I remember him coming out like with a shorts and like a cigarette in his hand, like a bottle. He was 17. Oh, wow. Oh, yeah. Throwback. And I remember, like, he was like, coach, listen, I don't want to go to school. I don't want to fuck with it. He goes, just do me a favor.
Starting point is 00:06:52 Just put me in a cage and let me out on Sundays. I don't give a fuck what you do all week. If you poke me with a stick and he goes, in fact, I prefer that than having to go to practice. Wow. He just didn't get it. And the coaches are coming to look at him in practice. Yeah. All these division one schools, he just didn't want to do it.
Starting point is 00:07:06 He goes, I just want to play. You know, who knows what happened. Last time I seen him, he had a ghetto blast. His stitches were exposed. He fell off a cliff. Oh, man. And he was out drinking with the stitches, the strings that look like he had a spider in his fucking head.
Starting point is 00:07:18 I'll never forget that. Some people cover it up. Yeah. Not him. He's like, fuck it. You got to give it that. That's crazy. But Lymeback is like this position where, you know, I remember going to offense defense
Starting point is 00:07:31 football camp and seeing Jack Lambert shaving with shit water. Like he was taking a shit and dipping his razor in the water. I went early in the morning to drink like water, like to brush my teeth. And this fool was in the bathroom with the door open, like, what's happening, kid? Yeah. And he dipped his water in the thing and he was shaving it. Oh, wow. And I always thought that Lymebackers had to be a little.
Starting point is 00:07:52 They were crazy. They have a little bit of. They're a little edgy. But they'll meet you when you're the sweetest fucking guy in the world. I'm a different beast. My wife always makes fun of me. She's like, you know what? I don't know what it is.
Starting point is 00:08:02 It's like off the field. You're just cool. But when you're on the field, you just, you're just in a different frame of mind. That's just, that's just always been my mentality. You know, it's just a time to turn on and turn it off. But times now, especially, you know, the transition, just not playing, you know, you got your moments where you, you feel a little edgy because, you know, you've been trained to do this from in my life.
Starting point is 00:08:25 I've been playing football for almost 20 years of my life. So this is all I've known. So sometimes when you just kind of by yourself or you're just kind of out about, you kind of wish you just had that outlet, that's probably, there'll probably be no other outlet that will replace football. I mean, some things kind of come close. That's why I ended up doing jujitsu with you guys because, you know, you know, you beat the dog out of each other.
Starting point is 00:08:45 You have fun. It's just, it's a physical contest, man, oh man, but there's nothing like football. There's nothing like football. That's probably why I'm ending up coaching because it's the closest thing to playing. But a guy like you, you know, you woke up on there when you were six and you play football. You know, actually, I was, I was a late bloomer one. So I think we had that discussion. My dad played with Broncos for 12 years.
Starting point is 00:09:12 No, he ended up having all as three AFC championships. No Super Bowl ring, Super Bowl 12, 21 and 22. No rings. And then I got the, I got my AFC championship when I was in New England, 2011. No Super Bowl ring. So we'll see what my son does in the future besides to go that route. So how old were you when you started playing? I was, what, 14?
Starting point is 00:09:34 Why so late? My dad didn't want me to play. My dad didn't want me to play early. He felt like, you know, kids at a young age just need to develop their bodies and do other sports. I did basketball. I did taekwondo. I sucked at basketball.
Starting point is 00:09:47 I mean, my friends always laughing at me. All I could do was just dunk and rebound. That's pretty, that's as good as you can get. But what happened was one of the teachers came to our school. This was like, when I was in ninth grade, our school system was weird. So I was going to a different school, 10th grade year to say, hey, who wants to sign for football? Tell my dad what to sign up.
Starting point is 00:10:06 He asked me, are you sure? He said, three times. Is, are you sure? Yeah, dad. Are you sure? Yeah. Are you sure? Yeah, I'm sure.
Starting point is 00:10:14 Okay. Let's go. Pop an iron in the backyard. We're doing deep into line drills. I think the reason why he said, asked me, are you sure was, well, he played it, he experienced it. He know what it took from a mental and physical standpoint. But I was ready.
Starting point is 00:10:31 I wanted to just see what I could do. And it just, it paid off in the end. And I loved every moment of it. Moved to San Jose, California when I was a junior. Didn't realize how good I was till after we had lost to our, one of our rivalries, St. Francis, after the game, coach came up to me and said, hey, Andre, you know, good season. I'm like, yeah, coach, you know, I'm, I'm still upset that we lost.
Starting point is 00:10:56 He's like, well, guess what, you know, what's going on, coach? You made all the league. I'm like, all right. And look at my dad's like, is that good? He's like, yeah, it's good. He's like, hey, guess what, what you made all, you know, section all CCS. I'm like, well, is that good? My dad's like, yeah, that's good.
Starting point is 00:11:11 This shows, you know, I didn't know nothing about football. I just played it. I didn't know nothing about all these accolades. He's like, hey, guess what? I'm like, what? You made all American. I'm like, is that good? My junior year.
Starting point is 00:11:21 Wow. I made all American. And my dad's like, that's great. And then I'm like, okay, I guess I do have a chance. And then next thing you know, I was receiving letters from colleges. I mean, my first letter was from Rice University. I didn't know where Rice University was. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:40 I'm like, open the letter like, Rice, where's Rice University at? My dad's like, it's in Texas. I'm like, okay. Then he's next thing you know, more and more letters were coming in. I'm like, oh, wow. Like this is big. My dad's alma mater sent a letter, University of Miami. I'm like, okay, okay.
Starting point is 00:11:57 Now I'm in business. And after that, my senior year did well. Got all American again and took my trips. I went to, you know, University of Miami, went to Northwestern, went to Rutgers, went to Cal Berkeley, Arizona State after they went to the Rose Bowl against Ohio State. And my final decision was Cal Berkeley. I just felt connected to Cal. At that time, it was, we had a Jean Upshaw, sorry, Reagan Upshaw and, sorry, Reagan Upshaw
Starting point is 00:12:30 and Dwayne Clemens. They were the two big time defensive bands. And when I saw them was when my dad was coaching at San Jose State. I was playing at San Jose State at the time and I just saw these two ends just tearing up the backfield, just going, nah, stop, nah, stop. I'm like, I can do that. And just seeing the blue and gold and like, I love the colors, it just fits. And when I made my final decision, that was my school, you know, Cal Berkeley.
Starting point is 00:12:57 Now fortunately, my four years there, we're a little bit rough. We didn't win any games. No bowl game, nah, nah, everybody else, you go to a bowl game? No. You sure? Yes. But I'll tell you what, the friendships that I achieved there, just the camaraderie, just know the, I call them the throwbacks, just the old school, golden bear, the grit iron,
Starting point is 00:13:27 the guys that wore the leather helmets, they were still out there. I mean, those are the guys that set the tone for being a golden bear and I'm proud to be a bear no matter what, you know, and I was very proud for it. And it was just an amazing institution. I still talk to my teammates to this day, Scott Fujita, playing linebacker for the Northern Saints to this day. He still rubs a Super Bowl ring in my face every now and then, so you gotta get you one of these.
Starting point is 00:13:52 I'm like, whatever, Fujita, hang up on them. But overall, it was such a great experience and I wouldn't change it for anything. You did something that I wanted to do. It was my original dream. My original dream was in comedy or being an attorney and nothing. It was to be an All-American, to play basketball and be at NBC on Monday, March. And for them to say what town you came from, that was always important to me. Once I realized I wasn't going to be six foot, my dream blew the fuck up.
Starting point is 00:14:27 It's just something, I've always thought that's the greatest thing a person could do is play college sports, be at a bowl game, you know what I'm fucking, I'm not saying them. I'm just saying, you did everything, I mean, just in general, just the feeling your parents must have. Yeah, I did everything right the way God was my strength of course and had a humble upbringing. I mean, that was, of course, my resource because he played in high school, collegiate and pro
Starting point is 00:14:55 level. So he played, where in high school? Was it Strayhand High School? That was in Fort Lauderdale, Florida? So he's from Florida, really? Yeah. Yeah. It was Strayhand or Strayhand.
Starting point is 00:15:07 Strayhand, the thing is like. That's like a great football thing. Yeah. That's like a great football, that's what Michael Irving's from, Endless Family. Right. Yeah, it was like in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I forgot the name of the high school. Like Strayhand, Strayhand, Strayhand High School.
Starting point is 00:15:20 Strayhand High School. Strayhand High School. My friends in Florida did a documentary about a bowl game they do. Right. It's like, you know, like it fucking everybody goes to it. Yeah. Forget the name of the black and white bowl. I don't know what it was.
Starting point is 00:15:34 Yeah. High school game. Like a high school game. That's fucking huge. Yeah. It's fucking huge. Like there's 5,000 people. I'll tell you what, this was crazy.
Starting point is 00:15:42 So I'm glad I had a taste of high school football on when I went to school in Florida. Because I tell you, it was a different dynamic in California. In Florida, spring ball, oh, you're hitting. You're hitting. Yeah. They have, you know, this little tournament or somewhere, you got, you know, school here, school there. Hey, we're going to play the first half.
Starting point is 00:16:06 Let's see what you're made of. And then they just switch it up. California football was just so different because I'm coming in like a new kid on the block. Oh, hey, man. Who are we playing against? You know, spring ball. They're like, oh, we don't do that here.
Starting point is 00:16:18 I'm like, what do you mean you don't do that here? No, we just put our helmets on and kind of like a kind of like a passing lead. That was so different. But I felt when I played football in Florida, kind of gave me an edge because it was just the competition was just so, it was just so different. Even though I had that one year, it was just, I had a taste of it. And that's why I think I just was just so hungry to excel when the season that started my last two years in high school in California.
Starting point is 00:16:44 Some of those states, Texas is the high football state for high school. Yeah, Texas. Florida, New Jersey. Yeah. Atlanta, Georgia. Georgia. I played flag football one year. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:55 Who was the guy that went on to New Orleans that was the shortest linebacker ever? Oh, Sam Mills and the other guy. Oh, her name, yeah. I played flag football. Exactly. Those guys were still in the game. Yeah. Even this is before you went to New Orleans.
Starting point is 00:17:07 Yeah. You know, he was playing in college. Yeah. They were all waiting for the call. Oh, yeah. He was waiting for a call selling cars in my club. Yeah. He was playing flag football on Sundays to keep in shape.
Starting point is 00:17:16 Granted, he was on like eight different teams. Right. He played from eight in the morning to six in the afternoon. I don't know how the fuck he did it. Wow. Just the programs are different there. Yeah. You know, one thing that your father foresaw that's a big issue now is kids with the concussions
Starting point is 00:17:30 earlier. Yeah. Yeah. And I don't think your dad looked at it that way, but he saw something. Well, you know what? Concussions back then weren't a big thing. I think his thing was from his experience was just, you know, the broken bones, you know, sprains, knees.
Starting point is 00:17:45 Concussions weren't really big like when I played in high school and even in collegiate level. You got them, but you didn't know what the fuck they were. I got a concussion. I didn't know what the fuck it was now. They're looking for you to get a concussion. Yeah. I think it's just more just how technology is, the resources.
Starting point is 00:18:03 It's just more diagnosed. Now, my grand and the high school level, I mean, yeah, I hit somebody hard and back then we would call it, we got our bell run or you just kind of like, oh, okay, you know, shake it off and I'm fine. Knock on wood. After I hit, I never had any, you know, after effects of being hit, I never was sensitive to light and never felt like unbalanced and that was throughout my whole career and people always asked me how it was that, you know, maybe because I just, I knew how to hit.
Starting point is 00:18:33 I knew how to keep my head up when it came to a tackle. I knew how to, I was just smart. I never made a tackle on my head down and all that pressure coming down top of my head to where it could mess up my spine. I was just, I was blessed and lucky. I count my blessings every day. And you would think it would have more often to defensive linemen and people who every player going up against offensive linemen and tackling and as a receiver, you're not
Starting point is 00:18:56 getting the ball every play. You're only getting tackled whenever you get a catch was maybe 10 times a game or something like that. Yeah. Defensive linemen, if you're playing 45 snaps a game, you're hitting people 45 snaps a game. Yeah. Yeah. I think it's different.
Starting point is 00:19:12 Now, what I'll say is my dad probably said the same thing, especially old school dudes that maybe just didn't have concussions. Now we maybe have, have faced trauma. Now that's probably common because like, as you mentioned, you know, where every play, you know, for me, 60, 50 plays a game, however you want it. Yeah. You're always hitting somebody. I mean, that's constant.
Starting point is 00:19:31 So almost 20 years of my life, I was hitting somebody. So will I not be surprised that, you know, hopefully it doesn't happen, God forbid, but will I be not surprised why I have some type of neurological problem, 15, 20, 30 years down the road? Hey, we're all human. I mean, it happens. You know, fortunately, I see my dad, my dad's actually, he's mentally sharp, he hasn't missed a beat.
Starting point is 00:19:54 The only thing he's going on with him is he has a little bit of a limp and that's just, you know, from the old school knee surgery when they just open you up, toss everything out and sewed you back up. You know, that was, that was his style, but everything else that he's, he's, he's sharp since day one, as long as I know him. What position did he play? Now he played nose, nose tackle, three, four, orange crush. Yeah, that's right.
Starting point is 00:20:16 Yeah. Orange crush. There were only a few teams that were, that were running that defense. So he was in the thick of things, double team, triple team, triple team, everything. Well, how much, how much bigger are guys now than back then? Cause you're huge. I'm sure you're bigger than your father was. And even now coming up, like Jason Pierre, Paul and all these humongous people.
Starting point is 00:20:35 Yeah. Well, I'm tall, I'm taller than my dad. Okay. I think my mom's six foot. So I ended up sprouting out. So my dad played a, now he claims, I always mess with him when I was talking to his teammate. He claims he played at a back then, you know, nose tackle probably about 250. That's not even a linebacker now.
Starting point is 00:20:53 That's barely a linebacker. 260. And they weren't tall either. They weren't tall either. No. Plus five, 11, six, one. And so he, you know, his last year was 86. So I think he, when he always told me it kind of shifted more when guys start getting heavier,
Starting point is 00:21:07 start shifting as he was leaving. So often, I think often Salima are about, about 290, 300 was heavy back then, but he didn't know it's a change where often Salima were constantly getting bigger to 300, 310, 315. And then his position, of course, the guys you, you see, you know, nose tackle these days, man, they, they, almost three bills because they got a plug up that middle and get those, uh, you know, set the linebackers free. And the messed up part, like Vince Wolf work is huge, but he can run. He's an athletic, he's an athletic big man.
Starting point is 00:21:38 Yeah. Yeah. He's an athletic big man. I've been around a lot of big man. One of my old teammates, uh, Anthony Adams, he played with me up in the 49er days and then, uh, ended up finishing up at the Chicago. Uh, you know, he was a big, he was a big dude, but athletic, athletic. You guys, man, I'll tell you what they can do.
Starting point is 00:21:56 The big man, athletic big man, what they can do is, it's just ridiculous. But they, you know, they find a way to take care of their bodies. I think the most important thing is like life, life after football, because we've been so accustomed to eating a certain way. I mean, you know, when it came to traveling, you know, you got Popeyes chicken and, you know, uh, you know, you go away, you go and hang out with your guys. But now it's just because you don't have that, that outlet or that resource. The most important thing is just eating the ride and working out.
Starting point is 00:22:21 That's why, that's why you see me how I am today. People always say, Oh, I'm not worried about you. You know, there was a time when I actually, I was bigger and that was after my, my, uh, quad, I had to, uh, reach, you know, my, uh, quad tendon, when I had to fix my rupture quad tendon, I actually got thicker because it was just, I was doing the rehab, but the activity wise, it wasn't up to the level that I'm used to training at. Unfortunately, because I was just, uh, always on the go. Well, thanks.
Starting point is 00:22:50 I was constantly on the go. So, um, so I was about almost, I was 270, but I bumped down. I'm about 250 now. And I was just doing good diet and working out and exercising. Uh, I read about some player that was three or something when he played. They retired. Yeah. He changed everything I read what he was saying.
Starting point is 00:23:10 Yeah. He changed everything and became marathon runner. Yeah. Yeah. And now he's 140 pounds lighter. Yeah. He's a marathon runner. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:18 Was a long time, uh, center of the Chargers Novak. He was just on ESPN. He's tiny now. Yeah. He was 300. Now he's like 200 or he lost a ton of weight. Yeah, that's crazy. It's, it's just easier on your joints too.
Starting point is 00:23:31 Yeah. I mean, especially when you get older and you just kind of feel the aches and pains, like I'm, I'm lucky. I feel, I feel pretty decent. You know, you know, there's times when you wake up, you got a stiff neck and that's just due to the fact that you've been, uh, you know, you put in a time never you train hard and yeah, your body's going to have a little trauma here and there, but for most part, I just try to stay active and just move around.
Starting point is 00:23:51 I don't lift the weights anymore. I hardly don't have lift weights to do pull-ups, push-ups, do stuff with the guys, the jujitsu stuff, just to stay mobile. I think that's the most important. That's the most important. Yeah. Just as long as I'm staying mobile, I'm good. I, uh, didn't play seventh to sixth grade football.
Starting point is 00:24:06 I was always tall. So I was like 135. The league was, you had to be 125. Yeah. I was always walking around at 130 or 134. That was fucking weight. I didn't even know what losing weight was. It wasn't that I was a fat kid.
Starting point is 00:24:20 It was just that I was a big bone kid. Right. So I never really played eighth grade. And then, uh, I think my eighth grade summer, somebody said, Hey, you want to play semi pro ball? I went to this, uh, football thing. And I said, you know what, maybe I will play. Cause they said to get in shape for basketball.
Starting point is 00:24:35 It's good if you play football. Yeah. Because the freshman football team did all this crazy shit. Right. So my eighth grade year, I did play football, but I didn't play for that weight thing. I played for, uh, like a semi pro thing. They did in union city with these fucking gorillas, man.
Starting point is 00:24:48 These guys were fucking huge. Yeah. It was 14 to 16 or something. And I went down and I realized how weak I was. Wow. I couldn't believe how weak I was quick and I could catch the ball and I could tackle, but I was weak and I dedicated myself to lifting. I mean that, that was it.
Starting point is 00:25:03 You know, five sets of six squats, straight bar, no fucking dumbbells. Right. I just got to get strong and big and thick. And I ate everything. Steak comes with cheese and white bread, steak comes, those fucking shitty fucking horse meat. You know, and, and I'll tell you the whole thing I did was just to get like, I wanted to be a linebacker.
Starting point is 00:25:25 So I knew I didn't want no neck problems and no spine problems. So my goal was to make my fucking traps come all the way up. So I was doing high poles and shrugs with all this fucking weight. And I got them up and it was so much work that was involved with the football. It's just not, so you have this thickness that you're building and then you just keep building the more you play. You go to college, you have to do it.
Starting point is 00:25:49 Now you're in the fucking pros where you think, I mean, I was reading something about you were the seventh pick in the fucking draft overall. Are you kidding me? Yeah. Are you kidding me? I was in, I was in Maryland at the time at my dad's house and I'm just watching. Did you know you were going to be the first round?
Starting point is 00:26:04 I knew I was going to be the first round. I just didn't know what team because I heard three different teams. It was either going to be 49ers, Chicago Bears or Denver Broncos. So those were the three teams. So three great teams to get picked. Three great teams. And I'm just sitting there watching it, watching it. And then, uh, you know, actually 49ers that traded to get me.
Starting point is 00:26:26 I think they traded with Seattle to come get me. And, uh, you know, I see the highlight, just my whole highlight reel, my, my senior at Cal and I'm just like, I'm just, I'm just, and you're from there. I'm from there. You know, she's local hometown guy. And I'm like, wow, I'm like, you know, it's funny because my teammates were like messing with me. They're like, you know how lucky you are?
Starting point is 00:26:50 Cause most, most of everybody that I knew was like, I'm from Florida and I'm coming to San Francisco. It was like, you understand how lucky you are. I'm like, man, I am lucky. It was, it was great. It was the best thing. And also all, all it's, all it's take pride in this, I was the last draft class of Bill Walsh.
Starting point is 00:27:07 That was an honor. And so for, for him to pick me, but then also to play this long, it was kind of like, uh, it was like, I was kind of like carrying the torch for him as well, because he had believed in me. So I played that long for 13 years. It was a blessing. So he coached you with the year? He didn't coach me.
Starting point is 00:27:25 He just, he was just part of the last draft class. Like, it was a GM at the time or something. Not even that, more like a consultant. Just, uh, he was kind of on his way out, but, uh, you know, Mary Uchi, I think trusted his judgment as far as, you know, bringing in the right guys. It was me, my boy, uh, Jamie Wimborn, who ended up playing, I think 10 years. Uh, Kevin Barlow, fortunately, just with Andrews and stuff. He didn't play that long, but when he played, he, at his prime, he was the best.
Starting point is 00:27:50 We had, we had an awesome draft class. We had a great draft class. So for us to be a part of, part of, um, his picks was just like, wow, thank you. We, we appreciate it. Now, I don't know. I know, like we're running back to one of these three years, three, four years. What's the longevity with a linebacker? Man, that's a good question.
Starting point is 00:28:07 I don't even know these days. It just seemed like, you know, the past, I want to say two, three years. There was a lot of guys just constantly getting hurt. As a fan, you notice it. Like, you notice like a draft class, people come in really highly touted. Yeah. And maybe they'll be lucky to make it through the rookie contracts. Now, now statistically, just overall, they said the average career for players,
Starting point is 00:28:28 maybe three and a half, three and a, three and a half years, 13, 13, 13. Yeah. 13 and only a quadricep. God bless you. Yeah. That was, that was the, that was the major, that was the major injury. I mean, I wrote from my bicep tender tendon. I had two more games left.
Starting point is 00:28:43 So I just said, you know what? I'm not going to go on the IR. I'll just play with it. Just take me up. I mean, I hurt, but I ended up playing through it. Uh, but that, that quad tendon, I was the far the worst part of the worst injury. I had a little back or deal. I had a, uh, that put me on IR.
Starting point is 00:28:58 It was something small. I had like a cyst form wrapped around my sciatic nerve of all places. It was just, uh, just something that was nagging me. So they ended up taking it out and took a piece of my facet joined out in my back. That was kind of creating that cyst. And I kept on playing there. Actually, I thought I was done after that. No, when you hear back, you know, or something spinal, you're like, oh, wow,
Starting point is 00:29:18 that's, that's, that's done. But, you know, my wife, uh, she took good care of me. Um, you know, she majored in physiology, masters in kinesiology. So she understood all that dynamics of how the body works. And then just, uh, just training my butt off. And I ended up, uh, still playing and it worked out great. Well, it's crazy how like it seems that when people bring up surgeries for players, it's just, oh, well, he's just going to have an ACL and he'll be
Starting point is 00:29:46 back in 12 months. I've been with Joey and he, I've seen, you got two knee surgeries and it takes you forever to get back. And it's just, I don't know if it's fans get so attached to the team. They don't really care about the players or what it is. But when you say you had a back thing and you tore your bicep and you played for two more games, if I got a hang nail, I might be like, all right, no, I'm out for the season.
Starting point is 00:30:10 Well, you know, when you mentioned ACL, this is the thing with ACL that people don't know about when, when a player has an ACL injury, predicated on when he heard it, whether it's beginning of the season or mid season, or even towards the end, even when the player comes back in nationality, yeah, he's back, but he's not into a full form till the following year. It takes a good two years just to get right, just to be normal. Yeah, they're back on the field and, you know, they're trying, they're being somewhat productive, but deep down, they're hurting.
Starting point is 00:30:42 Like people understand it. Like they're, they're not, they're not a hundred percent. And how much, how much pressure do you get from not only coaches, but let's say agents, because they know your contract's coming up and they want to get their money. I never experienced the agent part of it, but from, from teammates that have been through that. And, you know, it's tough because it's some decisions you've got to make.
Starting point is 00:31:02 I mean, you, you got to put food on the table for yourself or for your family. And then also the competition as well. If you're hurt and then, you know, they, like I said, the next man up and that next man up is performing. Oh, please believe it. The guy that's hurt, it's like, I got to hurry up and get my butt back on the field. Right.
Starting point is 00:31:18 Whenever, whenever, like they, they draft a play, like whenever, like they draft a QB for time, like to be a Tom Brady's backup and they always pretend like, oh, he's a great mentor and I'm, he might be, I'm sure he's a nice guy. Right. But nobody must like sitting, sitting at home and watching the draft and seeing, oh, they, they drafted the top defensive end. And you're like, well, I'm, I'm, I'm still good. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:40 Like why, why are they drafting him? Yeah. They always think about the future. No matter how productive you are, no matter what you did in the past, it's onto the next. What, what, you know, the team's always thinking about the future or the present at that time. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:54 You know, it's all about now. You know, thanks, thank you for your services, but they're trying to win some games. So, so they got to, you know, look at the exes and those and see what they can do to have an advantage when it comes to the season. It's a business. It's a business. It's not Pop Warner.
Starting point is 00:32:08 No, it's not high school, no, not college business. And there's a thousand different variables. Yeah. You know, you think of the players that you, you said some interesting that you had a teammate that was tremendous. And when he wasn't hurt, he was great. Yeah. Think of all the people that fall through the loopholes.
Starting point is 00:32:24 Oh, yeah. We don't even understand. Nothing bothers me more in this world or the sports or anything when a sports writer writes something, he doesn't know dick about that. He never even played Pop Warner. He's never even played the fucking game. Here you're sitting there with your pen going that this guy's not pushing it because he hasn't come back from his neck surgery eight weeks or whatever it is.
Starting point is 00:32:44 You know, it's, it's just another one. Magic Johnson played for Michigan State. He had a teammate called Gregory Kelser when they beat Larry Bird in Indiana State for years. I thought what ever happened to Gregory Kelser and I didn't have, there was no internet. You couldn't press to see what happened, you know, and I asked around and I asked of the basketball people and he got drafted.
Starting point is 00:33:05 He, he didn't make the team for some reason and he went to a couple of teams and you just drift away. No matter how good you are, you don't know that there's a thousand other variables. Well, all the fucking stars have to collide a thousand things. My friend went to Miami. Did he go to Miami? Yeah. Penn State.
Starting point is 00:33:25 They went to the fucking FedEx Bowl paternal didn't let him go down there one year or so. He was still one of the best linebackers in the country. Well, I just watched the boss birth 30 for 30. Did you see it? That was, it was, he was huge in college and he played like two, three years in Seattle. I just was his show.
Starting point is 00:33:40 They said his shoulders were like a 60 year old man. I mean, his shoulder was a scam before he got drafted. It was a scam. They took an insurance on him. It was pushing through the league and he got to this. Everybody knew his shoulders were damaged when I did the longest year I with him. He tells stories of waking up and the shoulder was next to him on the table.
Starting point is 00:33:57 Yeah. He was doing surgery back in the days when they didn't know, they didn't know what they know now with the page and shit. He used to get his, he talked about getting fined for every game for wearing his shirt outside. They would find him his game check. I don't really know. Because he was the only linebacker to tuck his shirt in 55.
Starting point is 00:34:14 So they would, you know, once he got to Seattle, I guess he caused Seattle so much money that they didn't want them. So they were doing what they could to fuck with the man. They took his house. They did all these little things, you know, and these are the variables. You don't know why you're sitting on your fucking couch eating chicken rings. Cheering for the fucking team or whatever the fuck. You don't know these things.
Starting point is 00:34:33 There's so many different backgrounds. Like people got really mad at Derrick Rose, the point guard for the bulls this year, this year, because he was out for two years, different knees went out and he was like, well, he like, he took himself out of the game. He's like, listen, I have to think about after basketball. And he was MVP right before he got hurt. But he's like, listen, man, I mean, I understand you're a fan. I understand that you want the bulls to win, but I can't be sitting in a
Starting point is 00:34:57 wheelchair for the rest of my life at 30. My buddy was a great linebacker, got drafted by Green Bay, started the first three seasons, first three preseason games. Who's going to start that linebacker? He already had Bill. What was the center? He was from my high school. Bill Withers.
Starting point is 00:35:13 What's his name? What's his name? Frankie Withers. Okay. Frankie Withers, the big center. He said he went up there and he pulled a muscle in his thigh. It was a muscle that only water skaters tear. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:35:26 It's in your groin. It's not your groin muscle. Something inside that only water skiers tore out ripped. Oh, wow. He got it. So everything was perfect. He went to training. Guess what?
Starting point is 00:35:35 He ripped the other side. Exact same muscle that only fucking water skiers ripped. Well, God, retired. When did you come out of college and the junior year? No, I, uh, senior year. Senior year. Yep. My senior year.
Starting point is 00:35:48 I had a chance. I had a chance to leave early, but I decided, you know what, I'm going to enjoy college, enjoy, uh, you know, want to see the program do well. Fortunately, we did it. But did any part of you, did any part of you want to be like, well, I can always go back and get my degree, but I, I can't, if let's say I get hurt in college, like Maurice Claret was either one who tore his knee or who is the Miami running back or Ohio State running back who tore up his knee in a bowl game.
Starting point is 00:36:18 And he had like a couple of years in Denver or something. Yeah. I know what you're talking about. I forgot his name. And, and because he decided to stay in college, I mean, yeah, college is great, but if you, if you only have a certain amount of time, four years on average to make money, make your money and go back. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:35 No, for me, it was just, like I said, I, I, I wore out the, you know, I weighed out the, the, the risk. Um, but for me, I was just, I was at that time where I was like, look, I enjoyed my boys, I enjoy college. It only comes once in a lifetime. I didn't know my, one thing I was blessed to do was I did that little insurance thing. So if I got hurt, I would be fine, uh, just as a, as a backup. But I, uh, I have faith in my ability.
Starting point is 00:37:01 I took care of myself. I never got hurt. And I knew that was a risk, especially coming into my senior year. I mean, things do happen, especially when my coach was like, Hey man, we don't, you don't have a backup. You're playing, you're playing the whole game, which, which I kind of anticipate anyway. Uh, and I ended up actually, I ended up being pretty healthy until we
Starting point is 00:37:21 ended up playing Stanford and up, uh, having a sprain ankle. I'll tell you a story though, uh, I played through the whole game by tell you what, somebody that I'm, that I'm friends to, to this day, my teammate, who's, uh, I think he's a kind of like a assistant D line coach or kind of like a password specialist. I have to mention his name, Tosh Lupoi. He was a freshman my senior year. They would dress him, but he wouldn't play.
Starting point is 00:37:46 But if I went down, he would come in for me. You know, so fortunately for him up to the Stanford game, he didn't lose a year of eligibility, but if he had stepped on the field, he would have. I sprained my ankle. He's about to come on the field. I tell him, stop. This is our last game, the last game of the season. If he had stepped on the field, he would have lost his year of eligibility.
Starting point is 00:38:14 I love that guy to death. I had to, I had to give him a shout out, Tosh Lupoi. I mean, it goes to show you how much love he had for me and the team. He was willing to risk his, his freshman year to come out and, and take a few plays, give me a few plays out to, you know, just to tape it up. But I told him, no, I can't, I could not allow that. So that was big. I mean, that was very big on him.
Starting point is 00:38:38 But I, other than that, though, I was, I was healthy throughout my, uh, my senior year. I was, I was, it was great. So running by me. So you get drafted San Francisco. How long are you up there? Five years. And you play defensive end up there or they switched your one year. My last year in San Fran, we changed our, our, uh, scheme to a three, four.
Starting point is 00:38:56 So it was an outside linebacker. How much of a big difference is it going from the end to the inside? Uh, it's a little, it's different because now I wasn't accustomed to your covering tight ends or jamming receivers and being at certain spots. So it was, it was a little, uh, a little bit uncomfortable, but then, but you got, you got to learn as you go. Covering tight ends. Oh my fucking savages.
Starting point is 00:39:20 I'm freaking, freaking, you know, you rush to the pass and then next thing you know, you got the, you just got this coverage call. You're like, you know, like, don't throw the ball to him. Don't throw the ball to him. Oh, he threw the ball to him. Okay. I got to tackle him. So that was, that was pretty adventurous.
Starting point is 00:39:35 Uh, like I said, you learn more about yourself when it comes to, to a new position. They learn more by the game. Um, but like I said, I was, I was fortunate to play those five years. And then, uh, when my contract was up, ended up signing with the Washington Redskins who wanted me as a defensive end. And then talking to the Redskins, they're like, look, we know, uh, we know what you can do. We want you as a, as a right end.
Starting point is 00:39:57 We seen the film on you. You put your hand in the dirt and rock and roll. And that was when, uh, Joe Gibbs was there. Love that man to death. We'll fight for him to the very end. Uh, Greg Williams was my defensive coordinator. Love him to death. Uh, crazy SOB, but I'll tell you what, there was so much, uh, so many
Starting point is 00:40:17 stories I can tell you about Greg Williams. Just, uh, he was a very aggressive coach, like no matter who we played, even if the other team was faster than us, maybe had more weapons, receiver wise. He's like, look, we're going to blitz. We're going to blitz this game. And so you boys is that you MFers better get there. And the people want to cover it and the people back on the back end covering, you better cover them tight cause we're blitzing.
Starting point is 00:40:45 I'm like, okay, he just, he just didn't care. He just didn't fear anybody. And, uh, you know, did, did that put us in a bad position at times? Sometimes, sometimes, yeah, but sometimes it was great. It was great. Yeah, it was great. And I'll, but I'll tell you what, as a, as a coach, I love, I love them as a coach because when we watch the film, he's like, you know what guys?
Starting point is 00:41:06 I take responsibility on that play. I should have never called that play. Hey, it's okay. You know, hey, sometimes you got to go with your gun instincts. You know, you live in your learning, but we played hard. We were actually, I think what the top six, seven defense, um, what? 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. Greg Williams had left after, uh, my first two years in Washington, but we
Starting point is 00:41:32 played, we just, we played hard. We played fast, we were physical. We were dominant for three play with London Fletcher, who was by far one of the best middle line backers that ever, that I was ever with. Uh, he made the call. He made sure everybody's in the right spot. Passion about the game thump, a thumper. I mean, when he hit you, he hit you and, uh, play with Sean Teller, you know,
Starting point is 00:41:53 that, you know, fortunately it passed away. You know, it's funny too. Cause you don't really know how good somebody is till you go back and watch the film. You know, I was actually, I was watching just old films, kind of like password stuff when I, when I played and watching my teammates, I tell you what, man, I watched it on Teller, man, that dude was phenomenal. Just all over the place. Ball, ball hog, fast, fast, hit you.
Starting point is 00:42:20 I mean, when he hit you, like I said, he'll hit you and he just didn't care. I'll tell you this one story, uh, when we were playing the saints, there was no six, you know, you watch old film, you just kind of pick up old stuff. I remember I hit Reggie Bush and Reggie Bush was kind of on the sideline, like kind of holding stomach. I see Sean Teller over there dancing. I'm like, oh, cause you're wanting to like, I'm like, this kid, this dude, man. I'm like, you know what, I'm, I love him to death, man.
Starting point is 00:42:49 And, uh, you know, it's unfortunate that, uh, you know, that incident happened to him, but I'll tell you what, his legacy will always live on. And, uh, I can just say I played for, I was happy to play with him. Yeah. It's funny. Me, I came from a, I love defense. I love to see people, I understand football. I understand that the guys in the field and where they have to go, you know,
Starting point is 00:43:11 when you watch it without playing it, you see something else. And then when you watch it after you play, I enjoy watching a great oil defense. Yeah. I enjoy that. As soon as I see two plays, I know these motherfuckers are doing it. Yep. But I also enjoy a great offense. Like I love watching.
Starting point is 00:43:30 Listen, I'm not a fan of anybody, but I love watching Tom Brady. Right. When Tom Brady's on, I'm not looking at the, I'm looking at his feet. I'm a dumb fuck. I'm looking at, why is he doing that? Yeah. Look how he does that. That's what I'm looking at.
Starting point is 00:43:44 I'm not looking at the receipt. I'm looking at how many, he's dropping back. Yeah. Is he putting this leg parallel? I'm one of those freaks, but I love defense. Like I'm a 25th, it had to be 95. You know, the bills were rocking. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:43:57 Yeah. And I forget who they were playing, but I, these guys, whoever they were playing were horrible on offense, but their defense was money. Yeah. And whoever the coach was said, we're going to blitz on Monday. And I remember to my friends, we're like, we're better than they are. I wouldn't do that if I was you. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:12 Just, I could be wrong. I'm machine gun Kelly might have the game of his life, but this guy just does a perfect blitz where everybody's covered. Yeah. So if these four guys are in or three guys are in, there's three and there's two. He just knew what he was doing. And dog, do you know that they blitzed? And I remember one time he got up, his helmet was fucked up.
Starting point is 00:44:31 And I remember like somebody said something to him. I could read his lip. He looked at him. He said, I never seen so many black people. They were flying through the air and everything if they were coming at them. Well, it's tough now because they're doing everything they can to make defense. I love it. You can't do it.
Starting point is 00:44:46 Yeah. Because it was all the penalties. And I know he would get so I forget who they were playing. They would send two in. These guys were coming and then nine more would come flying going, boo. Like they would just come by and machine gun Kelly. He couldn't get off. And once you get into his head with that blitz, he's done for four quarters.
Starting point is 00:45:05 He's done. That's why I love that blitz from the beginning. Hit him hard. First four. Let's see what he's made of. Well, I want him to go back to the silent. Look at his coach and say, Amen. Oh, fuck, we fucked up.
Starting point is 00:45:17 But I fucking prep work because it ain't work. I love whether it's baseball. When I was a baseball guy, I love watching Cincinnati because they figured it out. Let everybody do what he do. Our job is to fuck that picture up. When that picture goes to the coach and gives that motherfucker the ball and says, listen, you ain't just taking me out for the game. I quit.
Starting point is 00:45:36 I'm going back to my fucking father's milk company. I'm done. I don't need this. That's what the game is about. We fucked that main guy up that he can't, you know, the head. The body can't do nothing without the head. You chop the motherfuckers head and that's what certain coaches read through all that show. Somebody else like, well, we're going to hit the running.
Starting point is 00:45:55 What are you talking about, man? Let's get this little lanky motherfucker. Once we put him on, look at the bench. You got Michael Vick. We'll put a dog on the sideline and that's the end of him. And he got another guy behind him. What the fuck it is? You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:46:06 What the fuck it can be? Well, that's the word on Tom Brady is that if you hit him a few times, his old game goes down for that game. Well, anybody. That's any quarterback. Any quarterback. That's any quarterback. That's any fucking quarterback.
Starting point is 00:46:15 They don't want to get hit. Get them flushed. All I say, get them off the spot. Just mean he's he's just a certain way of throwing the ball, you know, the footwork, everything. You first, if you frustrate a quarterback, you're doing your job. Is it frustrating for you, though, with all the all the new penalties? And oh, yeah, oh, yeah. I mean, I understand.
Starting point is 00:46:34 I mean, like I said, I talked to my guys that the played around the same time I played. And I mean, I get it. Yes, there's there's a safety, safety or deal with it. In the day, you're like, man, this is football. This is football. This is football. This is my fucking football. It's going to happen.
Starting point is 00:46:48 Part of it's safety. But part of it is, and I've heard them talk, they want a higher scoring game. That's all it is. It's more entertaining. Yeah, that's that's all it is. I mean, it's just it's more like it says more entertaining, high scoring game. Just make it more exciting. But, you know, some people, man, they when they watch a football game, they want to see the hits.
Starting point is 00:47:04 Right. And I they always give us trouble. But you were talking about how a team had a really bad offense, but a great defense. When Suggs and Ray Lewis and I forget the defensive about the safety's name as every every year when they were playing and they were all at their prime. Yeah, I hated playing it. And they they didn't have a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:47:24 They had like Trent Delford and they won a Super Bowl. One Super Bowl because they had a good defense. But the Ravens and unfortunately, the past couple of years, they haven't been that great. But the Bears, yeah, like as a player, did you because when you have, when you think of a college program, you think of they have, they have certain things are known for, right? Pro teams probably have that too. So when you go to the Bears, they're like, OK, they're going to have a great defense.
Starting point is 00:47:45 Yes, yes. You know, as a when I was in college, when I was in college and I watched pro football games, one game that I loved at the time when they were at the at the peak was Tampa Bay's defense. Really? I mean, Tampa two. Oh, wow. I have to defense because they had Brooks.
Starting point is 00:48:06 You know, they had one set. They had rice on the edge. Lynch, I mean, and their scheme was just their scheme was simple. But it was just so effective because they just they they had the depth and they just knew they understood where they need to be. And then they just relied on their former rush. I'm a big thing. Just being a defense event.
Starting point is 00:48:26 I'm just big on the former rush. And you always say, let the dogs hunt. You know, every time we call, you know, sometimes it's D linemen when our D court and cause a blitz, you're like, man, let us rush. Let's figure this out. You know, because it's just things that old school mentality is that, hey, I want I want this guy. I want to see what he's made of.
Starting point is 00:48:45 Just like how much you want to see what I made of this. Let's go get after him. And, you know, times, you know, of course, you'll be successful. At times, you know, you won't lose some and blitz. I understand the blitz is kind of like a curveball. You just you just throw it out there. Just kind of keep them honest because you constantly do the former rush. You're not, you know, being successful.
Starting point is 00:49:03 You got to kind of keep the offense off their game. But but I think Tampa was when I was watching during the times of 97, 98, 99, I love watching the Buccaneers get after it because they and when they were coming, they were playing fast. They're playing relentless. They're playing nasty. Who was one of the quarterbacks you hated playing against on a Sunday? Oh, man, I'm sure you don't have that type of by by knowing your personally
Starting point is 00:49:28 style, like, yeah. Oh, and when I was with 49ers and we played, you know, Manning, when Manning was with the Colts, kind of stand them, stand them. And you respect them as a quarterback. Not that you didn't like playing against them. Well, they had Marvin Harrison. They had Edger and James. Right.
Starting point is 00:49:44 I mean, you know, this was a thing too, because that's when the cut in the new role with the the distance between the cornerback and receivers when the new rule came in. I think that was like 2002. Guess we were playing Manning. Manning. Check, check. I'm like, oh, Jesus, it's a boy. Did you say that you got them?
Starting point is 00:50:04 I got, no, I got Manning. I got both Manning brothers. Did you get them? I got both Manning brothers. I'm good. I put my little checkbook on. The quarterbacks are set, but that was tough. Now, he's tough.
Starting point is 00:50:15 I tell you what, he's by far, besides being with Brady and playing as Brady. Those by far were the smart quarterbacks. Drew Brees, smart, because they just they just know where they need to be, how they need to be. Hasselback, Hasselback was a great at his prime when we played because our rivalry was, you know, usually Seattle. About far. Have you ever played against Farve? Farve can stand far.
Starting point is 00:50:39 Because he would have just slowed up. And his cadence, he had by far the best cadence. Really? I jumped, I never jumped off sides a lot through my whole career. But I remember I jumped off sides in Green Bay. I was so mad because I took, you know, as a D-Line, you take pride in that. He had by far the best, the best hard count never been up against. Him and Brady, you know, because he just, he just something that he did.
Starting point is 00:51:01 This is, this is mannerisms. You know, because you try to, you try to anticipate the snap count. You want to get a jump off the ball. But something about Farve, man, he just, he just knew how to get in your head with that snap count. And but he was good at his prime. He was, he was really good. Just through the three step as a defense, a man, linemen, when you rush,
Starting point is 00:51:21 you know, we say, we can't get there. Three step drop because it's like one, two, three, boom, one, two, three, boom. You got to just get into your guy, put your hands up, hopefully get a bat of ball and run to the ball wherever it is. But those, those quarterbacks right there were, I'm happy to say, yep, I played against them and they were, they were great. You have any offensive linemen that you were like, look, look forward to like going up against? Oh yeah, man.
Starting point is 00:51:42 Walter Jones, Walter Jones, man, all pro. I mean, that boy was phenomenal. Great feet, good center of balance, smart. You know, as a, you know, when you rush, you always had this mindset like, OK, I got to attack him a certain way. I got to get after this guy a certain way. Walter Jones was just so different. He was just, you know, at times I think he was just probably unorthodox.
Starting point is 00:52:04 And, but he was so ahead of the game because he kind of noticed that the offensive tackles do it now. They always say, you know, cut off, cut the Deemason linemen to offer a certain point. Walter was doing that ahead of time, I think, compared to all the offensive linemen. So he was just, he just, he just had it set in stone. So as I'm rushing, I'm like, you get to a point, you're like, what do I do? You know, I want to, I want to chop his hands down. I want to club him. I want to rip him on the bull.
Starting point is 00:52:32 He's got me beat. He's got me beat before I got, you know, it was like, wow. And so, yeah, but I enjoyed, I enjoyed playing with him because he was physical, had a powerful punch on pass protection. And I think one time kind of punched me off the screen. Let's see who else. Willie Rolf, who played for the Saints in Kansas City Chiefs. Man, I never met a man that would have big, big dude, big solid dude,
Starting point is 00:53:00 but had skinny calves, the skinniest cash for office alignment. Same with my teammate, Derek Deese, that I played with, with the 49ers. Same, same deal, but athletic. Those guys are, guys are so athletic, man. So those, those guys that I mentioned were great. You know, when you, for my, when I see pro football, I think it's a smarter game. The players are so much more smart.
Starting point is 00:53:26 I mean, you would get to the pro level if you weren't so fucking intelligent. As a player, I mean, so intelligent. You know, I remember watching, I was, when I was younger, I knew the game more and I paid more attention. And I remember watching Ronnie lot. Yeah. Like Ronnie lot. Ronnie lot was one of the smartest DB's I had ever seen.
Starting point is 00:53:45 But just that's a position I always wanted to play. I just didn't have the talent to do it. You know, I grew up on Lester Hayes. Yeah. I remember breaking down Lester Hayes when they for Joe Rogan was like, what's this guy you're talking about? Lester Hayes got up on you and deed up on you. He went a different type of helmet.
Starting point is 00:54:01 He went like a fucking linebacker helmet when he was a DB and he would spray himself with stick them. So if the ball bounced, it would land on his ass. This guy was a stick them king and he wore braces all the way up to his arm. But when he, you know, the way he covered you, yeah, yeah, but when he stands up against you, it was all mental. So I remember years later talking to somebody from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Walker Lee, actually, and he was doing a thing in Jersey.
Starting point is 00:54:27 He was from Jersey city. And he was telling me, he goes, just seeing that guy, he intimidates receivers just by his stand. He would come up on you and draw his pants up and shit. And as soon as you turn, he'd stiff on me. He'd just be stiff on him and it was all a mental fucking thing. So for me, when I watch it, it's so weird, even as a comic sometimes, I could tell when I'm up on stage and I'm not using my head.
Starting point is 00:54:52 Right. You know where you should be. You know the level you should be at. You said that you're very nice off the field. But once that fucking coin tip, let's go. Something's right here. You didn't care about mom no more. You didn't care about fucking nobody.
Starting point is 00:55:06 And that's the, it's even happens with standup. The more I do it, now I know I'm a professional. I know what needs to be done. The stage don't affect me no more. The wind don't affect me. If I don't have a fucking microphone, it don't affect me. I have a game to do. That's the level of professionalism.
Starting point is 00:55:22 So yeah, with football, I've always seen it like that. It's a smarter guy. The guys that don't make it, the guys that bring that high school mentality, I'm going to lift, I'll lift them. It's not about lifting no more. It's not about that shit no more. It's like what he was saying, the guy had good balance. Who tells you that shit?
Starting point is 00:55:37 Yeah. Only a pro would say that's why he was strong in that position. The balance is right. Well, we were talking about Kevin Granat before the podcast started. And he, he's the skinny, he looks like a skinny alien, but he's been playing for 20 something years and fans of opposite teams hate him. Wow. But as soon as he's on your team, you love.
Starting point is 00:55:55 I loved him as a salting, but he's, he headbutted, like he just headbutted a dude, he smacked, he bangs his head against the, the, the, whatever the hoop. When he, before he starts, he hits his chest. He goes crazy. But when I think that probably is one of the best things is you hate them on opposite teams. Like I hated Doral Revis, but now that we have him, I couldn't be happier. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:56:17 It's, that must be pretty cool. Yeah, it is. So after Washington, how long? I was with Washington for five years. And then, uh, I went to New England, 2011. That was how'd you feel? How'd you feel the day you got the call from, you know, it was great. One, cause I was kind of, I was actually on edge because that was the lockout year.
Starting point is 00:56:36 So I had left Washington. I had one more year left on my contract, but I had to just part ways. It was just, it was kind of like a, a mutual breakup. Like, look, this, you guys are going this direction. I want to go this direction. Let's shake hands, part ways. Thank you. So I did that knowing that I'm going to the lockout year.
Starting point is 00:56:53 So that was a big risk for me. Um, but once the lockout year ended, you know, you just kind of sitting and waiting, okay, something's going to happen, something's going to happen. Actually, New York Giants actually called me first. I took a trip to the Giants and just, we just kind of come to a mutual agreement. When it came to the contract. So I was like, Hey, thank you guys for opportunity. Went back to home, went back to California, just kept on training.
Starting point is 00:57:17 Then a week later, Patriots called. But the irony is who would have thought that two teams that wanted me ended up going to a Super Bowl that year, Giants and Patriots. So that was like, well, no, the year, the year, the year I got picked up. Okay. So then you went to New England. So you went to the Super Bowl. I got hurt.
Starting point is 00:57:37 That's when I got hurt. Oh, fuck. But I mean, I'll tell you what, I made my first pro bow knot at 11 years, 11 year vet, making the first pro bow knot. That's just, that's something unheard of. You made it out of New England. In New England. Yep.
Starting point is 00:57:50 That's something that's unheard of. So I, I was, I was very thankful, but to not playing the Super Bowl and the ASC championship or the playoffs, you're like, Oh, come on. Like why? God, God always has a sense of humor. But I'll tell you what, it was, it was fun. I mean, I wish we would have won that, won that Super Bowl. It came down to the wire.
Starting point is 00:58:11 Yeah. It came down, it came down to a few plays. But I think overall, just the experience of being in New England was just, was such, such amazing. Cause they're kind of like a second family, you know, fans that talked to me on Twitter or that bumped into you, that bump into this, Hey, once a patriot, always a patriot, you know, and you don't hear that often when it comes to, well, from my experience, I could be wrong, but you don't, it's
Starting point is 00:58:38 good to hear that, you know, cause it's just like, cause the fans, and I'm sure you'd be, you'd be in there. They, they know their sports. They know, they know the players that no matter how big or how small, they just know the players that just go out there and just give it a hundred percent. Well, when I, when I live there, I, the only radio station in my car was everyone was EI, W EI, the sports station and people call in, they have regular callers every hour.
Starting point is 00:59:04 Yeah. People, they take it very seriously. Yeah. And there's a lot of players who go in and might be high, bigger named players, but they, they last for a year or two. It's a different sport, but for the Red Sox, we had Crawford and we had, we had that big trade that sent out all those people, the Dodgers, and people hate them and they're Adrian Gonzalez and they're great players.
Starting point is 00:59:25 But when, when New England people love players like you, who, who go in and, and it's the only picture I can think of of you is you doing the, the arm thing you do with the sack. Sean, Sean Ellis, you know, he started that. It was just, uh, just kind of linking together to stand together, linking together, being strong, one strong link. And so he, he started that and it just, you know, just kind of spread like wildfire.
Starting point is 00:59:53 So that's how it started with him. So thanks to Sean. I love that. Uh, one thing I love about him from the jets. No, it's a join us. How, how, how is it like playing for a Bella check? Cause everyone makes fun of them with the news conferences and all the, and all the pictures players always go onto the next one.
Starting point is 01:00:08 Right. What did he like behind closed doors? You know what, I tell everybody, he's like a general. I mean, he truly is a general. I mean, everybody knows that through his experience with his father. Um, his father was a coach for Navy. Right. So he kind of has that, that mindset.
Starting point is 01:00:23 Look, our business is nobody's business. You know, you work hard, do your job, do it well and be consistent. And, you know, don't put yourself at disadvantage. Don't put the team at disadvantage. Don't do nothing dumb outside the field that will jeopardize a team. And it's just something that's constantly heart heart going. And that's why they're just so successful. That's why they've been successful.
Starting point is 01:00:48 You know, there's everybody says they're a secret recipe. No, this is just, this is just his standard. And he just constantly preaches it day in and day out. And I think one thing that that's been well for him is also the continuity with the staff when you have that continuity. And I mean, most of the people that I met there and not, it doesn't necessarily have to be coaches. I mean, that there's people from up top management wise, this lady Nancy,
Starting point is 01:01:10 sweetest lady in the world. She'd been there maybe like 20, something 30 years, secretary, but she's been there. But she gets it. It's, it's a, it's a great system. And so when you have that, when you have that, it just gels, everything just gels and everybody kind of feeds off each other. And it's just such a, it's just such a great environment to be in because at the end of the day, I know this coach, you know, how this other coach works.
Starting point is 01:01:37 They don't even have to communicate, but they don't, they understand each other's philosophy. Someone comes to maybe planning for a game or a preparing for practice. At the end of the day, they're all in sync. And when you have that, it just, it makes things so much better. It's why that's why they do what they do. That's it. It's why he's been to fucking six super balls.
Starting point is 01:01:56 Yeah, six, yeah, nine AFC championships, all that, you know, it just, I never understood the last four years I've had success with comedy because I did things I never did before. Right. You know, in the last five years, because I did things and I kept doing them. Right. You know, and it's just continuity sometimes. And it's weird when somebody looks in the face and they know what they need to do
Starting point is 01:02:20 and they do it for three weeks and then they forget all about it. Right. And it's like I go every morning and I put somebody got mad at me last week. They sent me an email and they go, you know, you're a fucking boring fuck. Every morning you write the same shit on Twitter. I always put, have a beautiful day. Yeah. You know, and what would you rather me fucking say?
Starting point is 01:02:37 I say it for me. It's a beautiful day to be alive. What do you want me to say? It's going to be a shitty fucking day to be alive. You believe it. You start believing it. Yeah. And nothing can happen to you and you have beautiful fucking days.
Starting point is 01:02:48 Yeah. And I've been doing this for, I don't know, eight years now because it's a beautiful fucking day to be alive and I write it every day and it becomes real because the power of the pen. That's it. But it's continuity. If it works for you, you know, it's been working for fucking Bella Jack. That's it.
Starting point is 01:03:01 And he keeps fucking doing it. It's tedious as it is. It's tedious as it is. Now, if fucking works, you know, the biggest thing you always hear is do your job and we just had, they just had that thing last week with the Green Bay Packer tight end who was on the kickoff team and he went for the ball and he wasn't supposed to. And he knew he wasn't supposed to, but he went for it and ended up not losing
Starting point is 01:03:19 them a game because there's so many plays, but it didn't help him. It was a crucial play. And I always laugh when another team, another planner team says something about the Patriots because you know we're going to use it and someone just said something about Gronkowski. He's not that good. Yeah. So I know the first couple, there's going to be a big pass to Gronkowski.
Starting point is 01:03:37 It's, uh, I love it as a, as a fan. Yeah. But it, it makes me laugh when I see other teams doing that. Right. It's, uh, I went, are you as crazy when, when Andre was on the team as you are now? I was more, I was crazier. I had more time.
Starting point is 01:03:52 I did your curse and Andre to the team. There was nothing missing that fucking block. You're fucked. There was nothing to curse at him for. You love him. You love. Yeah. He, so as I came up and I said, you know, you didn't, he was great.
Starting point is 01:04:04 I know England. Oh shit. We got to have him on. Yeah. No, it's a man. Thank you. I, there's something about football is pretty much the only sport I can watch any team, any game, baseball.
Starting point is 01:04:15 I love the Red Sox, but on TV it's boring. Yeah. For me at least. I don't watch baseball. I've tried it. It's just, like I said, I know it's America's past time. It's just, it's just so slow. So it was fucking football.
Starting point is 01:04:28 You think football is slow? No, I think, uh, fucking America's past. Oh, yeah. Right. Yeah. That's what I thought. That's what I thought. I think more people go fucking crazy on a Sunday than any other day of the week.
Starting point is 01:04:38 I just came back from the, I just came back from one of the teams. It's the craziest football team I've ever went to that game. That's the Buffalo Bills. You don't know what a game is. Do you went to a Buffalo Bill game the first three hours outside? Oh, yeah. And the fucking snow, that's the whole thing. You don't need to go in.
Starting point is 01:04:53 You can sit outside and get drunk with those animals. That's all there is out there. That's all there is out there. If you could have played all 13 years from New England, you would have loved it. Oh, yeah, no question. But you would have had the same love and I have the same love and with the 49ers, the same love, the Redskins. But I like to say I love New England.
Starting point is 01:05:11 How the fuck did you end up a Raider? It was, I want to know this one. You know, it's funny. Uh, so I got hurt. I was slowly recovering. We just didn't come to agreement with New England when I got hurt. This business, uh, Raiders just took me a chance. But I tell you what, I think the Raiders, because it just kept my foot
Starting point is 01:05:28 in the door to keep playing, because I really wanted to do what's his play. Um, and yeah, it was a rough year. But I tell you what, I was working with a lot of younger guys. So it was rewarding working with Lamar Houston, who's now the Chicago Bears. My D line coach was actually now with the University of Florida, Terrell Williams. But I played with Richard Seymour. We all got, you know, we got drafted, uh, got drafted the same year. So we kind of just talking about things going up.
Starting point is 01:05:58 We actually had the same accolades together. So, you know, there's always, there's always a reason for everything. Yeah, me and I have worked out win-wise. But I tell you what, I kept my foot in the door to keep playing. And my final year was back, back into England, which I, which I told my wife and people know this, like I told them at the end of the day, I want to finish my career as a patriot, whether it was just signed up, you know, contract or just finishing it up as a player.
Starting point is 01:06:24 And I finished up as a player. What is it? What is it like when people tell or are saying you should retire? Well, there was just a UFC fight where Henderson, right? It was Dan Henderson. He got stopped pretty quickly. And everyone's saying, oh, he should retire. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:38 When it's all you've done for however many years, it can't be that easy. It's not, it's never that easy. It's never that easy. Cause you always have that edge. You always have that, I know I can go like for fighting. I know I can go one more round or for football. I know I can go one more quarter. I know I got a lot left in the tank.
Starting point is 01:06:56 You know, it's trying to, you know, it's trying to push, you know, push yourself. But one, one vet always told me and say, go to, they kick you out. Well, apparently I didn't get kicked. I didn't get picked up this year. So they kicked me out. And how was your first year without football? Like it was always an adjustment. It was always because you like, so you always kind of feel out of place.
Starting point is 01:07:16 It wasn't so much the fans. It was the locker room, you know, cause you, you'll never have that type of dynamic in the real world in the locker room. Everything goes, there's no holds bar, but it's like, that's your brothers. You know, you can say whatever you want and it just stays there. You know, you, you have fun in the real world. It's like, you know, you get a job, get a nine to five or whatever you do. He can't be politically incorrect.
Starting point is 01:07:44 You can't say this. You can't say that. How's the locker room? You could be politically incorrect. Yeah, man, we're men. We're men. We jump around. It's like, it's like, it's like being in high school or college.
Starting point is 01:07:56 You know, we guys, we just, we poke fun at each other. It's like, you know, you're a big brother, little brother. You know, but there's a, there's a fine line that's drawn and you know, but it's just, it's just those memories that just keep on going no matter how old or how young you are. So that was, that was the adjustment. But, you know, you, you try to find yourself. You try to find what makes you happy.
Starting point is 01:08:16 You try to find a sense of balance. You enjoy your family because, you know, during the times when I was training, I was away. So I get a chance to see my son do all these crazy sports. He's in the soccer. He does basketball mechanics, does football mechanics. He does outdoor hockey. So I enjoy being a dad and then just being a supportive husband with my wife.
Starting point is 01:08:38 She's into all these crazy projects. And I just, I always tell her how proud I am of her, but I know, but you always have that itch. You always, you always on, you know, this time you're going to be on edge. She's just, it's in you. It's, it's just embedded in you. We're, we're still going to be animals to a certain degree. And every now and then you got to find a little outlet going to this cage.
Starting point is 01:08:57 But like I said, there's nothing in this world that can ever replace that besides football, without playing the game. But like I said, just, just has been great. So I, I enjoy it. I still work out. I just try to take care of my body. And I just continued to try to network and just let people know, hey, I do have an interest in coaching and hopefully, uh, be on board with, uh,
Starting point is 01:09:20 on the staff, whether it's on the pro level. My goal is definitely coach pro, but if I have to do something for the collegiate level during my stripes, I want you to get a high school job. So I got in the yellow screen and say, you know, you said something that I've been thinking, what happened to the gay football play? Oh, Michael Sam, he's been out of it. He didn't play this year. You know, I kept thinking about that.
Starting point is 01:09:44 Like how would that work on a locker? I know I don't want to put you in the spot. No, no, no, you and me, people, people, people ask me. I just, I don't care. As long as you play football, let's go. Well, you must have. I'm obviously not going to ask you to name names, but just with those sure numbers, there have to have been gay football players that you played with.
Starting point is 01:10:00 I'm sure, I'm sure. I mean, I think, I think in life in general, there's somebody that she baby knew that was kind of like, maybe he is gay. Then again, maybe he's not. I mean, the world is too small for all your friends not to be gay. Right. You know, they say, go for men, say, go for women. It's, that's, you know, but I'm not, hey, I'm not against it.
Starting point is 01:10:21 That's your cup of tea. Hey, I'm going to treat everybody the same. You know, I do have gay friends. I know gay people and I just show them, I show them the love, same amount of love. No, I have gay friends. I'm not saying that bad. I was just always curious on what happened. That's how out of it I am, because when we had the discussion a year ago
Starting point is 01:10:38 about him getting drafted, I said to you, that's all great and dandy on paper. It's not going to be like that in a locker room. Yeah. There's going to be 10 players and I go, coach, can we talk to you for a second? I'm sure. Yeah, this can't happen. Yeah, this can't fucking happen. Okay, there's got to be 10 players that are going to go crazy.
Starting point is 01:10:54 Well, the issue that it seemed from the outside, I looked at it. It's not that he's gay and it's not even that he's out. It's that kind of like with the man's elephant. He's causing a lot of unwanted. The media with the media. Right, which I can see. I never thought. Yeah, which I can see because the media, I know the media kind of maybe
Starting point is 01:11:12 blew it up to a whole different level. And what do you think of that? Like with with Marshawn Lynch, like how, how the NFL makes them go and do the interviews and you have to have media availability. And all he wants to do is run the football and they're, they're finding them. If anyone find me a hundred thousand dollars, right? I can't, I don't know if I, how, how you even deal with that. Well, one, I can't speak bad about Marshawn.
Starting point is 01:11:38 He's a cow guy. That's my cow. That's a cow bear, golden bear. In general, um, that's just a rule. I mean, that's just a standard rule. I mean, the media wants you. I do the interview. He chose not to do the interview.
Starting point is 01:11:52 He gets fine. That's his choice. Not going to knock him down for it. Um, that's just his overall mentality. Um, but this was also about to my attention about Marshawn's. He, Marshawn does a lot of stuff for the community. Um, I think he just kind of keeps on a wrap because he just doesn't want the attention.
Starting point is 01:12:08 He does it. He does it because he loves his community. Well, so which is great. I'm, I'm, I'm proud of that. Um, well, people always ask me about the, like the question he asked me, well, what do you think of him not, you know, answering during the interviews? I can't speak on them with that. It's, it's, it's, if that's his choice and he wants to get fine.
Starting point is 01:12:26 It's a waste of money, but that's just me. Well, I, I, I don't like him this week because we're, we're on the page that they're playing, but I think it's hysterical when, when he, when they were having the university, he's like, thanks, thanks for asking. I'm thankful. Yeah. Thank you for asking. And he's, he's about, he's somewhat by and by the rules.
Starting point is 01:12:42 He's doing an interview, maybe not to their standard, but he's, he's there. He's, I mean, yeah, he's a piece of work. I don't even know if you know him, but it's just as a, as a fan, like with the Aaron Hernandez and now Josh Gordon again, when you hear stuff like that, it's just, I, I can't even fathom. Why they make those decisions for people who don't know, there's a wide receiver for the Browns who was suspended for all of last year. Right.
Starting point is 01:13:08 He got in on the technicality and then just now he failed another test. Yeah. We'll cut a test. Drug test, but it was for alcohol, but he can't do it because he's failed drug tests like every year. And it's just, I, and then the thing with Aaron Hernandez where he, he's, he just signed a $60 million contract. If we had Gronk and Hernandez, it's an unstoppable tandem, but then he
Starting point is 01:13:31 doesn't, I don't know if he did it or not, but well, they're human beings. They are. That's what nobody ever, everybody forgets that before Andre Carter goes on the field, he's a human being. He has feelings. He has emotions. He has problems like everybody else.
Starting point is 01:13:44 Yeah. So you can never be in shock. And then you, you know, I mean, we're $60 million. The reason why Aaron Hernandez went and got a gun and shot somebody, obviously these problems were in him before he became a football player. Right. Let's do a Tony Bennett real quick here. And I'm a boy.
Starting point is 01:13:59 You got a boogie? Yeah, I got a boogie. Okay. I love you, man. Thank you, brother. Man, appreciate it. Real quick. Who are you picking this weekend?
Starting point is 01:14:05 Come on, baby. I got, you know, you got the Patriot serve. Come on, baby. My pajama. I love you, man. I'll see you Wednesday. Yes, sir. Thank you, brother.
Starting point is 01:14:14 Thank you for coming on for the little football for you motherfuckers on the church. Oh, you made his world. I was going back and forth with a Tuesday night, Monday night and tell him he has to run a mile with you next week. Right. Am I taking a little bit of a ride with me on a little bit, brother? That's it.
Starting point is 01:14:33 It's over now. It might take a little bit longer than you're used to. I love you. Thank you very much. Thank you very much, man. We used to do with me. That's a bad fucking interview right there. People will football for you.
Starting point is 01:14:52 Super Bowl week. We just want to switch it up a little bit. I know this isn't what you people usually get. You want fucking people jumping out windows and me making fun of people and laughing, but it was just a little something. Let me give him some shout outs real quick. When I fuck my glasses, I got a little excited. I keep smelling spaghetti.
Starting point is 01:15:09 You smell something? There's a man I smell something. I could go for some spaghetti. Some shout outs here. My main man, Don Wrangler, Eric Saruti, Moses Vasquez, Jamil Haddad, Corey Layton, JB Brands, called Frankie Barker down there in Australia with Ted Planet, John Wolf J, and my man, Udi Gustasen. I love you.
Starting point is 01:15:32 Cox uppers. Thank you, man. Had a great time in Buffalo last weekend. The crowds are great. Thank you very much. If you came out, I love Buffalo at all, my fucking heart. But something really weird happened this morning. I want to tell you people something about what goes on here.
Starting point is 01:15:48 You know, Lee and I were fat and we try to lose weight and we really try at this, you know, and Lee's 26 and I'm 51. And you guys know that. I tell you every fucking day. And, you know, I don't drink soda no more. You guys hit me up and said that, did I know how bad soda was? And I took your advice and I read up a bunch and I never drank soda again. I did that because of you guys, because people were sending me messages.
Starting point is 01:16:17 I listen to you guys. Half the things I do are for you guys because I want to do them to set an example, because I don't want you to think that we're just here fucking around. Lee's just lost 80 pounds doing the stand master. It's not the way you guys want it. You know, maybe you guys want to lead a fucking jump out of a helicopter or whatever. You know, I've been losing a little bit more weight. I took these two classes down at the hospital for you have to take a mandatory
Starting point is 01:16:44 class for nutrition. I took another one. I weighed myself the other day after Buffalo. I lost six pounds. That's awesome. You know, so now I'm at 300 even, you know. So it feels fucking good, like it just feels good. I got it now.
Starting point is 01:16:57 You guys know, I'm thinking about doing the gastric bypass. I'm doing the gastric bypass. I've already lost 118 pounds with weight watches. I put 30 something back on. I've gotten two knee surgeries. My blood pressure is just a little tad too high. It's not high because of the food I eat. It's high because of hereditary reasons.
Starting point is 01:17:17 Even when I was in prison and I was 27 and I was the best shape in my life, my blood pressure was a tad high. Now with the medication, it's not going anywhere. Anybody who knows me knows I work hard at what I do. This morning I had an audition, but I still walked my daughter around the park twice, pulling the fucking thing and now and I watch what I eat. I love when you guys give me advice. You know, I got Danny Lyon, who sent me the books, Pilates for men, fucking great book.
Starting point is 01:17:44 You know, I get a little bit from each of you is whether it's Mike Dolce. I don't like the whole Mike Dolce thing. I know what he's trying to do, but I can't eat that stuff. I got this fucking email from this fucking scumbag two weeks ago. Out of all the people you want, and I understand where he's coming from, he tried to help by me watching a documentary on Netflix. But he says the gastric bypass, the gastric sleeve and all this shit. I'm trying to explain that.
Starting point is 01:18:08 And then I told you that my wife bought a salami and cheese over the fucking holiday to make an anti-pasta in case people came over. OK, so the one night I met a salami sandwich. I think I mentioned it here that I like eating salami sandwich. Another guy emails me like, well, you eat you and Lee, you know, your nutrition is bad. You got to do this. I advise you against the whatever. All right, that's great. Out of the six thousand emails I got, when I decided to do this gastric sleeve, I haven't really decided yet.
Starting point is 01:18:32 The first thing I do when I make a decision on anything is I ask my closest friends. I asked the people who know me, Josh Wolf, Lee. I didn't ask Lee because we got the same problems I fucking got. But I asked other people and I went to the doctor's idea with Dr. Ramey, Dr. Waxler, Dr. Bidici, my sleep apnea guy, my cardiologist. I ran it through them. I ran it through friends of mine that have had the surgery. Friends of friends that have had the surgery that have been hit me up about the surgery.
Starting point is 01:19:01 People have sent me more information on this surgery than anything else they've ever sent me information on. Joe Rogan, who's a fucking against everything. I pulled him aside of Vegas two weeks ago and I talked to him about it. He emailed two of his doctors. They emailed me back the information I had to look for. These are all these people with a positive tip and this fucking scumbag on Gmail sends me this fucking thing about this, that, this.
Starting point is 01:19:23 I mean, it's like they know us. Like they know what they're like. I'm lying about my diet. I'm doing the gastric sleep because I have a daughter and I want to live. You stupid, worthless motherfucker. OK, because that's what you are. There's certain people who try to give you advice, but there's certain people want to give you advice like they know you and they speak down to you.
Starting point is 01:19:41 Like they wrote me back like three fucking emails. I don't give a fuck about what you think. I listen to people who love me. I don't want no fans. I want family, but it's like, you get these people that they think they know you and they want to like bully you like, like he's talking down to me like, well, you need to do this and you're eating this. What the fuck?
Starting point is 01:19:58 Oh, he told me I live in denial. I'm as honest as I can with my diet. Leave. Do we not talk three times a fucking day about our diets and disgust it? And this guy thinks we're out drinking like in and out fucking burgers and shit. You know, I like food and my niece called me that day when we're talking. And she's like, you know, it's a shame that you're doing the surgery because you really like food. But guess what, people?
Starting point is 01:20:20 I also like Coke, too. And I stopped that eight years ago. There's a day you look at yourself in the mirror and you say, you just can't happen. I had my friend call me this week at 3 30 in the morning, a great guy. And he can't put it together and buffalo. He's moving to Boulder now. And I told him today, go, what was the call at 3 30 in the morning for? He goes, I just want to go.
Starting point is 01:20:36 There was no reason for that call. You were drunk. I've told you 30 fucking times every time I go to Buffalo after I leave that show at 12 30. My night is dead. This guy thinks I go back to the room and I'm having a party or do and blow without him. No, I go back to fucking sleep. So I called him back to go. What was the call for the night?
Starting point is 01:20:54 And he goes, well, I just want to know you want to call me to break my balls? And when I leave you, I want to come out. I leave you. I don't go to drink. I don't go to do nothing. I go, you came to me after the show and you said that it looks in the last four times that you've seen me, that I really put a lot of work into my stand up. That's the work until you stand up, that you stick to the fuck your rules are. If you say you're going to write every day and you're going to perform four nights a week,
Starting point is 01:21:18 this is the rule you do. You don't deviate from that. You know, I don't deviate from anything. Once I say I'm going to do something, I fucking do it. I don't deviate. I don't give a fuck who's plans or who gets upset or who doesn't want to get upset. It doesn't make no difference to me. And I take the same thing with my diet.
Starting point is 01:21:35 I haven't drank soda late. I refuse to drink soda. I don't like it. I didn't drink. So I didn't quit soda. I like soda, but I got advice from the podcast, from people that listen to the podcast. So my point is, if you're going to send me an email, send me an email out of love. Don't send me an email because you're a miserable fuck.
Starting point is 01:21:53 You know, I lost 180 pounds and this is how I did it. I too had high blood pressure. I don't give a fuck, but you're still a miserable person. I could tell you're a miserable person by what you wrote me. So don't worry about your weight and how you did it. Worry about how come you're such a fucking cunt and how you're going to stop being a cunt. Miserable is when you want to make other people's lives miserable. Right.
Starting point is 01:22:15 And if you read his emails, that's what he was trying to do. Like you live in denial. Who the fuck are you? You live in a fucking computer. You fucking cunt. Anyway, no, it's it's tough, especially because there's so many ways to do it that everyone thinks the way they do it is right. It's why there's so many weight loss fads.
Starting point is 01:22:31 And yeah, when you think about it, if you're fads and there's lifestyles, right? That's the biggest thing I've learned. But if you're going to look at it just on paper, you guess, you should not be eating a salami sandwich. That's no one should ever be no one should ever eat burgers. You just shouldn't. But it's it's also there's life. And if your wife and daughter are eating salami sandwich, one salami sandwich isn't
Starting point is 01:22:54 going to put a hundred pounds on them to fold up, right to put on the thing. She left five slices. The one that I mean, a salami sandwich with cheese. I think I said on the podcast during the fucking holidays, the guy's like, were you eating salami until the fuck you talking about? And you know what, man? When I go to fat Tonys, what do I get? When I go to with you to Jersey, Mike's, what do I get a small tuna sandwich or
Starting point is 01:23:14 the salad or the salad? Yeah, or the fucking salad. I don't get no fucking salami or I get the fucking turkey with the provolone. Did I tell you I go to worst case now, get a turkey with the provolone? Let us that motherfucker up. But nine out of 10, when I go to that fucking place, I get the tub in a sub with half the tuna, right? That's what I get.
Starting point is 01:23:31 But let's say even if you did get, I don't know, the turkey with the cheese or you had the salami sandwich, that's not doing what we talked about a while ago, where you would go, where you would have breakfast, a huge breakfast, and then immediately go to McDonald's. And it's the little change. And it's when people go on these fans, when I went on the fans, I'll just speak for me, I wanted the quick fix. I wanted to lose the 70 pounds in a month and a half and not put the work
Starting point is 01:24:01 in, but that's not, you know, you can't live the rest of your life. Never eating a salami sandwich again. No, it's impossible. I went to Buffalo this week. I had one beef on wick. I had three wings. I don't know how you do that. Three fucking wings.
Starting point is 01:24:18 You want to call the manager? We went to the radio and Rob Lieberman, the guy who's got radio, had wings sent. He had nine different types of wings, nine different types, barbecue, this garlic. They had big things of blue cheese and celery. I must eat 10 pieces of celery raw with no blue cheese. I took three wings, three wings. When I dipped just the tail and blue cheese and I inhaled the whole thing. So I was in Buffalo three days.
Starting point is 01:24:43 I worked out two of the days, not dicking around, lifting weights, the treadmill one day and the fucking, not the treadmill, what you do for 30 minutes. And the other day I just rode the bike for 30 minutes and I did the weights. I did the fucking stomach. I did the fucking lunges. I did the whole thing. You know, I'm working here. We're all fucking working here.
Starting point is 01:24:59 So I don't mind you sending information about web pages. So many fucking people have sent me such great information. Web pages about diet. That's the way they do it. This fucking little miserable cunt, but it has no fucking life on its own. The most important question is, is did you go to Subway? Not even. And there was one in the hotel.
Starting point is 01:25:20 I took a picture. I was going to bomb those fuckers. No, no more subway for nobody, brother. No more, no more. Did you see that? This girl tweeted at us and so she used to work there. And when they took him out of the packages, it smelled like dog butthole. It does.
Starting point is 01:25:32 It does. I could tell you that fucking off the back. You didn't know that. No, I know that. It's just, it's, uh, the issue is, is, uh, convenience. And that's, that's where a lot of people gain a lot of weight, I think. What's that? Convenience, laziness and convenience.
Starting point is 01:25:51 Hey, listen, my game, a lot of weight, cause I'm a fat fuck. I'm not here to tell you I gained weight because I had bursitis in my heel. No, no, I gained, I was eating fucking 6,000 calories a fucking day. You're going to gain fucking weight if you gain 6,000 fucking calories a day. But now we look at what we're doing and we pay more attention to it. And that's it. It all starts, you know, and that's, I love what Mike Kelly said, but it's true. You know, I like Coke too.
Starting point is 01:26:14 And I got rid of that fucking, I mean, I loved cocaine. Did I tell you motherfuckers that I loved doing below? Love that I couldn't fucking even think of not doing it. So please, uh, if you're going to mail me something, I don't mind constructive criticism as long as it's fucking real. All right. Yeah, there's a big difference. And then it was, uh, when I did the juicing and then every time I talked to
Starting point is 01:26:33 somebody, everyone says your taste buds change. I haven't found that, but what was really big for me this weekend was we had planned every meal where we were going to go and we're going to get all this food. And the last night we almost had to cancel our dinner reservation because we just, we, we, we actually had to push it back because we were just so full. And when I got there, they had a 16 ounce ribeye with french fries and a poached egg on top. That sounds fucking delicious.
Starting point is 01:26:59 But I was sitting there. I was in pain. We worked out every day with it. We were there. What pounds did you gain? Three pounds. That's not bad. But I mean, it's not great, but I was sitting, we were sitting there.
Starting point is 01:27:09 I was like, hmm, there's a four ounce fillet and a thing of grilled shrimp. I was like, I really want the ribeye, but I don't need it. And that's, that's something I would never have done before. And I didn't, I didn't think my mindset had changed. I thought I was always going to be like a, a fat guy, even if I, I've never, ever been skinny, but let's just say I do someday get to be skinny. I never thought that I would, uh, I'd be eating salads. I thought I would always be fighting against being a fat person, but it was
Starting point is 01:27:40 kind of cool looking at it. I'd be like, wow, I can't eat as much as I used to. Well, and I have to make those decisions. I still got that gift thing that he sent us from doing the next week for sure. Okay. I'm home next week. This week I go to Columbus, then I'm home for a week. Then I go to Austin, Texas.
Starting point is 01:27:54 So I'm excited about that. But I know I'm the same way. When I go to eat breakfast now, I went both days to the hotel all three days. All three days I had oatmeal. I could have had eggs and bacon and fucking T bone steak. I had oatmeal. Yeah. I had oatmeal and fucking fruit and whatever.
Starting point is 01:28:08 And you try, it's a lifestyle change. You know, so you have to, and this is why I say, you know, I don't even look at McDonald's no more. How did it taste? Oh, well, we were hammered. It was delicious. But I got, I, I've told them, man, I used to get three sandwiches, a large fry. And then you told me what your menu was.
Starting point is 01:28:26 That's why you told me you went to McDonald's. I was like, I got a double quarter pounder with them, the small fries and a small drink. And I didn't even, I didn't even finish the fries. Uh, I did get carne asada fries at the part of those things are fucking delicious. But, uh, it, if you saw what I used to be eating, I used to go to fast food, probably at least once a day, if not more. I, this McDonald's, the last time I got McDonald's was in July. So sometimes you're going to get it.
Starting point is 01:28:59 And I've gotten so many of those e, of those emails and I don't know if, I don't know if they're trying to be mean. I don't know if that's if they think they're helping some people are great dog. I've had, I have so far since this, I've had close to 300 emails about this surgery. Right. The advantages of disadvantage. I've had people send me websites, diets. I mean, people are fucking trying.
Starting point is 01:29:20 Right. It's always that one guy that thinks he's swarming me that thinks like, oh, well, I know what you're doing. You don't know dick. Right. You don't know fucking dick. You, if you know what you were doing, you will listen to the fucking podcast. Right.
Starting point is 01:29:30 All right. So go fuck yourself. And we've talked about it. In reality, you could do it without the surgery. The surgery is not, it's not like it's liposuction. They're not pulling the fat out of you, but it's, it's putting it in place where you can't eat that much. You'll get sick.
Starting point is 01:29:46 You could just eat however much you're going to end up eating with the surgery and lose the same amount of weight. It's just, it's helping you. It's, it's everyone needs help with some things. Some people, some people needed help with rehab to go to get off drugs. You didn't, that wasn't where you needed your help. You need help because you're on the road, because you love food, whatever the reason, maybe you need help.
Starting point is 01:30:08 I love food. I've been working so hard at it, little by little. You know, I'm terrible at jujitsu, fucking terrible. We horrible, horrible, but I still go. I had said on the Rogan podcast, you got to fucking show up. I'll probably go tonight or I'll go tomorrow and Wednesday and I leave Thursday. You know, I always stick to this shit. I'm the type of person when I tell you it's over.
Starting point is 01:30:31 It's fucking over. That's how I was raised. That's my mindset. There's no reason to go back. There's no reason to fuck around. I advise you to do the same, man. I do these stupid things on Twitter every day as a reminder for me. There's a lesson for you guys that no matter what the weather, no matter what
Starting point is 01:30:46 the fuck's going on, you still got to do the same shit every day, the same shit. I don't want you to eat the same fucking cheese sandwich every day. I'm not saying you get a tuna sandwich every night because that's not going to happen. But if you want to be a winner, like Andre Carter said, if you look at what these people do, they do the same shit every day. That's why they're in the position they're in. They're not in the position they're in because they go away for a week. Well, they didn't want to do it for one week or it got old.
Starting point is 01:31:13 Well, then you're going back to your old fucking things. I do things now. I got up this morning at 4.15. You know, I did from 4.15 to 6. I sat in the living room and wrote something I never do or I never used to do. If I want to get to the big games and comedy, this is what I need to do. I tape my sets, sadly, my both sets. Second one was men's and men.
Starting point is 01:31:31 The first one was great. I learned so much from listening to them. If I'm going to shoot this special in May in Vegas, this is the things I need to do to be the best, not just for one week, for the rest of my life. It's like, we didn't ask him, but I'm sure watching game film for hours might not be Andre Carter's favorite thing, but he can go and look and see what the offensive linemen he's going to be up against does every game. Oh, when they're running, when they're going to go into a run, he moves his foot
Starting point is 01:31:58 this way or it's not that stuff isn't fun, but it's what makes you a professional. That's what that's the difference is that you learn, you move on. When you see these UFC fighters and they're going to be champions, they don't come in with the same shit that they did for the last 10 fights. They improve. Everybody says that John Jones gets better with every fight because he pushes, he tries different things, he experiments, and that's what makes you better. But I guarantee and all that he does the same things every day.
Starting point is 01:32:29 That's what gets you there. Not for a week, not for eight weeks, for fucking 20 years. You know, when Lee and I have conversations about dying to the league, you're going to lose this way. You're 26. What are you going to do in the next 20? Are you going to be chasing on the treadmill? No, you got to learn to adjust, right? Because every year that treadmill is going to work less and less for you every year.
Starting point is 01:32:49 Your metabolism slows down. So you could do the treadmill from now on or whatever. I don't think you're going to be doing the treadmill next year. You don't want any know what the fucked up part is, is the low, the more weight I lose, the less it works because you burn less calories. It takes me about 20 minutes longer than it used to to burn the same amount of calories. You know, and that's what are you going to do? What are you going to do when you're 40?
Starting point is 01:33:11 Right now, eventually you're going to gain 15 pounds. You know, you know what? I got to change my lifestyle. Carnita fries are not even in my vocabulary. No, right? You know, this is not even my vocabulary no more. I've discussed a thousand times. I love fucking eating.
Starting point is 01:33:26 I love it, but I like eating good food. You want me to eat it too? Make me a fucking prime rib with some steak fries with some gravy. You know, I want to eat Jersey style. If I'm not going to do that, I'm not going to waste it on anything else because I know they're wasting that time. Right. You know, why would I spend $20 for breakfast when I could eat one egg, a piece of toast and two and some fruit?
Starting point is 01:33:47 That's all you need. Why would I want to? When I pay $20 for breakfast, what am I eating? Home fries and four pieces of toast, right? You know, there's just so many different things that you could learn from. And, you know, it took me fucking years. I'm just really proud that people are helping me. I'm really happy I have this opportunity to have this surgery.
Starting point is 01:34:04 I did all the requirements, whether I'm going to have it or not. That's a complete different day. The thought of them taking your fucking stomach out sucks dick. But let's see how I feel. When is it? Do they have a schedule? I got to wait. I'm going to call now when I leave here. I got to call and get the insurance, which takes four weeks. Right. And then after that, we're ready to fucking rock.
Starting point is 01:34:22 What does Terry think about it? My wife thinks that it's going to help the family, that I really want to do this. I want to live for mercy. So I've already taken the other steps to live for mercy. You know, I don't do drugs. I don't do any of that shit. I'm not doing nothing. I don't drink. I'm working on my sleep. I do the best I can, man.
Starting point is 01:34:41 You know, a lot of people got mad at me this week in Buffalo because I wouldn't do podcasts, stuff like that. You know, a good friend of mine, Saturdays is my rest day because I'm not going to sleep. I only slept two hours, maybe an hour and a half Saturday fucking night. You know, I got off the stage at one and I got on a plane to fucking five. And then you got to go home and decompress. So I know these things.
Starting point is 01:35:02 So, sadly, I prepare for Saturday night. You know, I worked out Saturday. I worked out Friday very hard, a lot harder than what I usually do, you know, on the road to have all the things at the gym. So I said, my diet, the only thing I ate that was bad, but it came in my calorie count was the hot chocolate at that night. Oh, yeah. He said they put a straw, a chocolate straw. Straw at one fucking night.
Starting point is 01:35:22 I just it was so cold outside, I didn't want to coffee. So it was just called the chocolate bar. Yeah. So I went in there and they had a large and extra large that shakes that all this shit out of everything. I go, can I get a small hot chocolate? But he looked at me. She's like, we know we put whipped cream and just give me hot chocolate. She goes, well, can I give you a chocolate stare?
Starting point is 01:35:40 I don't try to lose weight. She goes, I think it's only 60 calories. I go, all right, what the fuck? I still kept under the 2000. I'm my my fat, but what happened with the with the black ice? You called me. Oh my God. I was calling you because I was stoned. I went out there and I got so fucking high.
Starting point is 01:35:56 And I know I kept seeing was in my mind. I saw I fell first. So what happened was Saturday got really the rain. It was frozen rain. And I didn't know I hadn't brand new Adidas on. I go around this thing. I take a fall, guys, that is classic. I'm on all fucking fours.
Starting point is 01:36:12 Howling, my jeans were dirty. Because it hasn't happened to you in how many years? Oh, I haven't fallen like that in a long time. And I enjoy a good fucking fall. Who am I kidding? So I got up and I kept walking, smoking a joint. And also after I finished smoking the job, like I got upstairs and changed these fucking sneakers.
Starting point is 01:36:28 These sneakers are too fucking slippery. You know, like Puerto Rican shoes that were just slippery on concrete. And next to you know, I see some black, but they take a fall of like her feet went off from under. She landed on the ass on the head. Also, I seen this car pull up and I'm like, look at that Jewish lightning at its best. I thought the guy was going to come give her like a card.
Starting point is 01:36:45 Yeah. And still he helped it up. And I'm like, look at this fucking momo. I thought he was a real Jew was going to give her a card for insurance settlement. And then I'm like, all right, so it's not my new sneakers with all that. I look and I see these two little white gay dudes that are running. Yeah. And they have track shoes.
Starting point is 01:36:58 They take outside to run. They didn't know. And they went around the turret and all of a sudden one guy fell and the other guy fell on top of him. I go, this is not good fucking running. Well, I think they thought the same. So I saw four people fall same spot in five minutes, not the same spot in the same fucking street 30 feet apart.
Starting point is 01:37:15 Like everybody fell in the same 30 foot area. That's Buffalo, New York, but I had a great time. Buffalo is a great fucking city. It really fucking is a great city. And every year you go at the same time. Fuck yeah. There's only one reason to go to Buffalo and that's no winter. I'm not going to go in the summer.
Starting point is 01:37:31 I'm not going to go to Buffalo Bison game. If I'm going to Buffy, it's in the motherfucking winter. And a lot of great people showed up. You know, Denmark showed up little dishwash over at Rob Lieberman's. He brought Mercy a stuffed toy. I heard a lot of Canadians to the floor. A lot of Canadians drove down Toronto, Ontario. I love you motherfuckers.
Starting point is 01:37:51 Who else came down 10 planet Rochester was there. Oh, cool. My man, Tim McKenna was there. Sean Connors was there. A lot of people are there. So it was great. You know, when I go to Buffalo, it's like a small family. So and I love helium.
Starting point is 01:38:04 I love fucking helium. Yeah. Let me tell you something. I had a half a beef on wick. I cut the beef on wicks and was they had in half. I had one when I got there. And I had one in between shows, you know, that's how good I was with the adieu and the horseradish, Leon.
Starting point is 01:38:20 I've never had beef on wick. I've never been above. Well, it's salty. Your blood pressure goes up. I hadn't put half the meat on. OK. And I just put horseradish on it. No French fries, no nothing.
Starting point is 01:38:31 And that was my dinner. I had half a sandwich when I got there in the other half. So I wouldn't have a lot of food in my stomach. Yeah. When I went on stage with the. The shows were great. They were great. You know, I have nothing bad to say about Buffalo.
Starting point is 01:38:44 I go, I'll fucking move up there. That's how much I like it. And now you're on to Columbus. Now I'm on to Columbus to fuck around. And that's it, brother. Let's wrap this motherfucker up. I love you guys. We got a great week going on.
Starting point is 01:38:56 I don't know if you're on the East Coast. My heart goes out to you. You guys are about to get hit. You guys are going to be invisible till fucking Thursday. So get ready for that. It's always great when it snows. You can prepare to disappear. Oh, I love it.
Starting point is 01:39:06 Especially on the East Coast. Nothing's going to happen. You know, Josh had surgery and he's supposed to go on Wednesday. I'm going to send my thoughts to Josh Wolf and his family. And I talked to Josh today. Finally called me back and we were talking and I go, you know, it looks doesn't look like you go on New York on for a Wednesday. Right.
Starting point is 01:39:22 There's no reason. I mean, they already cancel all the flights tomorrow. That means that two days behind. If you're thinking of going to New York, you're just going to fucking slip and slide the freeze and a foot of fucking snow. You know what that's like? That means it's more than a foot. Are you serious?
Starting point is 01:39:35 They're looking at two to three feet in Boston. Is it already snowing? I heard it was supposed to start later in the day. But I'm not, I'm not sure my mom called during it. So during the podcast or shit, it might be. It's already six o'clock, so it should be fucking coming down. Do you want to do the ads or if we're going to end up real quick? Oh, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:39:57 I'm just trying to see if it snows. I know what the fuck to see. Yeah, apparently it's a little bit already in Boston, at least, but not huge. I can't find it.
