Several people apparently were sort of hoarding these or made lots of orders hoping to get one and ended up with more than they wanted. They are slowly trickling into stores after being announced like in February and immediately selling out and then not having any more stock for months and months and months. Because September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. They're already finalized. We finalized these a long time ago. I thought you said it was a draft. Did I misunderstand? Is this the energy I'm getting from you today? I'm the challenger, so yeah. You're being very challenging. That makes sense.

These are the rules of the draft. There will be 10 rounds, 20 overall picks. The draft will be split into three categories. There will be four picks each for the iPhone, three for the Apple Watch,

and three designated as other. The winner of the previous draft gets to pick first. That was me. I won the WBC draft. The items that we will be choosing are from a predetermined list of picks that we put together. We have agreed that they could be verifiable on screen and not ridiculously obvious. And for an item to count, it must be either clearly announced on stage or on a slide during the keynote presentation next

Wednesday. Stephen Hackett will adjudicate in the case of a scoring stalemate between Jason and Mike. There are no partial points awarded and the points awarded on the episode are final and finalized during the scoring segment of next week's show. In the case of a tie,

there is a tiebreaker question. The loser will get the pick of the tiebreaker, which as always is event runtime. The winner becomes the draft champion and displays the champion pennant proudly. The loser becomes the draft challenger and also displays the challenger pennant,

maybe proudly, it depends how they're feeling about themselves. The 2022 results so far, Jason won the March event, which I have zero memory of. Do you remember what happened in March? when I'm watching at home, I do sort of score along with the presentation. I don't do it that so much when I'm actually there, but, I mean, if you're just watching along in Cupertino, honestly, you might as well keep score there too.

Okay. What do you think? I'm intrigued. I just, I think it's, I think they're, it's a two hour slot. I think being that close to 90 minutes is too short. So I think it's going to be more. I think they're going to have more to say than. I think they're going to have more to say. I think they're going to have at least an hour and a half to say.

They always give a two-hour slot. What does that mean, a two-hour slot? Yeah, I know. I know. But they don't always fill the two-hour slot. But I feel like I'm just going to go. I'm going to be optimistic and think that it's going to be more like 90. All right. I thought it would be closer to 90, which is why I went to 83. Because it's longer than the last one. In the past, they have sometimes taken the opportunity to talk about lots of other things. Also, you know, I'm putting in there a little bit of a possibility they might have a live portion. spend. But we'll see. We'll see. But I just, I choose to be optimistic and think that if they're going to have us go down there for an event that they'll give us at least 90 minutes of material. But, you know, history says that may not be the case still i choose to be optimistic janna in the discord asks what happens if the time at apple park is different to the time of the stream we only judge what's streamed it's the time of the stream right because in fact we have had that last time where there was a question of like tim cook announced you know appears before the crowd you know live and tim Cook did appear before the crowd at the event live, but none of that was streamed. It's not part of the program, and therefore it doesn't count.

So we now move into the first round, which will be iPhone picks. iPhone picks. Four of them each. So I get to go first, which is a rare feeling for me. You do. It's not what usually happens. So I actually feel

a little bit of intimidation about the fact that I get to make this first pick. Just pick something weird pick something unlikely fun oh is that is this is interesting i'm enjoying this uh okay i'll tell you what i'll go with uh always on display comes only to iphone pro models that's not weird or fun no it's not is it no i'm planning to win so we have a couple of different picks here you can probably guess the kinds of picks that we have from the way this one is worded i feel like the always on display is a feature coming to the iphone

which we've wanted for a long time feels like it should have been technically possible for a long time with the oled displays and especially with the pro motion that came last year but they haven't done it yet but it really does feel like with everything that they're doing with complications on the lock screen or widgets on the lock screen uh and the dimming states that we've been talking about in previous rumor roundup segments it feel i feel pretty confident that this is going to be the year of the always on display yeah this was my top two i think if we've ever been told about what is coming, right, a year and a half in advance sometimes, this is one of the things that is at the top of the list. They've been telling us for a while now that this is what we were going to get. And you're right. It actually feels more like, why did we wait so long?

Because it does feel like they had some of this technology sooner but they i'm sure they're going to do exactly what they did with the apple watch right we just say oh but we had to put in a new display controller in order to get the frame rate down to the lowest level because otherwise the battery life is unacceptable and i i believe that right like i i get that they they um i think somebody checked, and the current OLED displays only go down to, like, 10 frames a second or something like that. Like, it's not enough for an acceptable amount of power saving, apparently. So, okay. I'm looking forward to it.

Should be nice. What's your pick? All right. Well, that was my first pick. So good job to you. That's the advantage for having one last time. I am going to say, I can't pick that one because Mike already picked it. I'm going to say the notch is gone from at least one iPhone model replaced by cutouts for cameras and sensors. This is another one of those rumors that's been floating out there for more than a year, which is we're going to get kind of a hole punch and a little lozenge, a couple of objects floating on the screen, but not the full notch that we've had since the iPhone 10 in at least probably the pro models.

But my pick is at least one model. I'm personally just excited for whatever Apple calls these things. Because, you know, it seems like in the rumors it's been people have settled on like, well, I think pill is usually what people go for, but lozenge is fine. lozenge well i think pill is usually what people go for but lozenge is fun um and i'm and like hole punch display has been kind of the way it's been standardized on in the in the uh android world right because it's been around for a long longer time because you know the android phones have mostly stuck with um fingerprint sensors right so the cameras have just been able to be all that's there they haven't needed to have the sensor arrays that Apple's got going on.

Because that's what it would be, right? You'd have, most likely, a hole punch for the camera and then the pill-shaped for the sensors for the Face ID. Some pills are round. It's more like a capsule kind of shape. It's a tablet and a caplet. Although lozenges can be square too. They can be square and circular too.

So it doesn't really work that way. But yes, we all know what we're talking about here. So I'm going to go on that one. That seems like a pretty safe choice that's been talked about for quite a while now. That was very high up on my list. That was going to be my third pick. Oh, okay.

Because I feel like this will happen, and I'm actually pretty excited about it. My second pick is going to be another pro-focused thing. Because I know that's not in the pick. We say at least one iPhone model. But this is going to happen on the pro phones, right? Well, man, imagine that. They're like, we've removed the notch notch but only from the lowest end phone only the cheapest phone not even the

max phone will have it's just no it's the iphone se we've removed the notch from the iphone se it gets a little hole punch now you're welcome yeah everyone knows the the notch on the iphone se is highly contested uh we're gonna my my second pick is going to be the pro phones get an upgraded camera okay we put in brackets more megapixels like that's the thing um okay yeah let me tell you why i put more megapixels in this in this choice in our little menu of picks that's the particular thing they talk about upgrading the camera all the time but the megapixels has remained the same right they're like oh but the the focus pixels or or the the camera all the time but the megapixels has remained the same right they're like oh but the the focus pixels or or the the you know the aperture it picks up more

light it's a new sensor that's not enough this time more megapixels so here's what i'll ask about the more megapixels what if they don't say megapixels but it's obvious that that's what they're talking about like what if they call it like high resolution or something like that? More detail. We're gentlemen here. I think it's going to be clear if it has more megapixels. They'll say something, right? If they don't say megapixels, they will say it's got four times as many pixels.

Because the rumor, like the way it's been reported on is like the way that a lot of people do it it'll be a 48 megapixel like sensor a camera yeah that will be um binned to 12 still but so they'll still be binning the image but it will be of a higher quality so we'll work it out but we'll know what it means we'll yeah we'll know it when we see it but yeah so these three pics at the top this is why i am actually really excited for the iphone 14 pro because obviously that's the phone i'm gonna go for anyway right and these three features to me if they do all these three this is like as big a change as you could hope for on a phone i think to be like a big feature like an always-on display like that's going to be a big feature for i think for me the notch changing is effectively a new

design element right which happens every now and again and then the expectation is this will be a very sizable change to the camera experience so i think those three things just on their own i'm very excited about this phone if it happens but wait there's more mike it's also going to get a new processor i don't care about this the iphone 14 pro gets a new a chip it's my choice and here the implication is that maybe the iPhone 14 proper does not. But I'm not picking that. I'm just picking new year, new chip in the iPhone Pro. Because the reason this doesn't excite me is because this is what I'm used to. Right.

So like this is going to be that weird thing of it will be nice. I just wanted to say, but wait, there's more, you know. It'll be nice to have because we'll have it. But, you know. I'm the challenger. I got to do what I can. I got to do what I can. New A chip. I'm just going to move straight ahead because i don't really have a ton to say about this like i actually think

it's more interesting to talk about the inverse which we'll talk about right which is what about the iphone 14 here here new a chip oh uh you know it'll be the basis of the M3, probably, maybe. It'll be 10% faster in things. Yay. Okay, what's your pick? My pick. So this is pick number three, right? For you, yes. Yeah.

Color option added to at least one of the pro phones is different to what we've seen before. So not a green or not a blue. Yeah. Now, the rumor... A lot of purple rumors out there. A lot not a green or not a blue. Yep. Now, the rumor... A lot of purple rumors out there. A lot of purple rumors out there right now. Yeah. That has been going around for a while,

and then there was some supposed leaked footage of the case, which also had the property that had been spoken about, that it was almost iridescent in a way, like it changes color with the light. I would like all of that um i'm intrigued it would honestly take a lot to move me from gold like it would have to look really good because i love the gold iphone um but yeah i basically for me i just want them to to say that pro colors can be more than green or blue, you know? Okay. I look color.

One of our favorite topics here, right? I agree with you. I think it's a very exciting rumor that there's going to be, that Apple's going to embrace the purple and, and, and do it in the, uh, initial release and not in their weird, you know, spring color update that they do. However, I'm going to put one caveat here, which is I love the idea of a purple phone. It's great. My daughter has a purple phone. I love it. It's fun.

It's a different look. Purple is a fun color. Great. However, what gives me pause is, you know, blue and green are kind of fun colors too. Except in the iPhone Pro where they're not. They make boring versions of those. Make it boring purple. And so this is what I'm afraid of.

I'm afraid they're going to make the most boring purple ever. And we're going to be like, yeah, well, if you hold it up in the right light, I guess that's purple. And so that's my fear. It's like, will it be a fun purple or will it just be deep purple? I don't know. That's a good point. Yeah, you're probably right, but I don't know.

Maybe more like an amethyst, you know, which is, that might be nice. We'll see. Okay. That was my, that was actually rated higher. I decided at the last minute that the new A chip was more of an obvious pick.

I mean, it's super obvious, right? iPhone gets new chip. But this year there are rumors that there's going to be, they're changing their chip pattern. And that's why that was an allowed pick. I am going to go with a pricing. Ooh. Okay. One, which is a little more tricky, but no guts, no glory, I'm going to lean in to inflation and pick that some phones starting prices will be higher than on the iphone 13 yep lean into inflation would be a great episode title by the way if we didn't title these if if we did yeah um and to be clear the rumored iphone 14 max being more than the ip iPhone 14 Mini is not what we're talking about here.

We're talking about base. Somewhere in the line, the base model is going to not be what it is now. Because Apple is going to increase their average selling price of these phones by doing doing maybe it's a straight up price increase maybe it's killing the lower storage tier and forcing everybody up to the higher storage tier for the same price but the lower storage tier doesn't exist but i just i'm gonna bet on um some iphone price increase here i'm do it. For easy scoring at home, what we're talking about is a price change on either the iPhone 14, the iPhone 14 pro or the iPhone 14 pro max.

Yes. Right. Because exactly the iPhone 14 max, I mean, it's not going to be cheap. It's like going to take the price of the mini. Can you imagine like, look,

we wanted to stick to the prices. I know this. If you'd like a larger phone, pay a hundred dollars less pay $100 less. It's great. It was really important to us to stick to those prices. Yeah. But if you imagine, if the iPhone 13 Pro starts at $14 Pro, or the 14 Pro Max starts at $11.99, that would be or or if the iphone 14 starts at let's say 849 even right instead of instead of 799 that's what we're talking about right i would be very very surprised if those prices will stay

the same me too but apple has surprised me with their pricing being aggressive with pricing before so they could do it again i mean the apple the apple the dollar is strong and that is the apple is strong the apple is strong the state of the apple is strong the dollar strong and uh so apple you know apple could afford to keep u.s dollar prices stable and then just raise the price literally everywhere else in the world but i i had this feeling there was that one report that they were expecting the the average selling price to go up 10 or 15 percent and i did the i did the math in my spreadsheet and was like i don't see how this isn't a price increase like just changing the mix on the on the from the mini to the max doesn't doesn't do it so we'll see all right my final pick in the iphone round at least one camera upgrade to the

iphone 14 okay what does that mean well that they will call on stage some kind of improvement my expectation this isn't in the my expectation is it's a higher quality ultra wide because that's something that's been lacking on the regular phone so how is this different from the upgraded camera more megapixels oh this is the iphone 14 not the pro oh the regular iphone 14 you're right right yeah the regular to the regular iphone 14 yeah some kind of camera upgrade there no that's good that's a good pick yeah like it's not going to be the big change but I would be really surprised if they didn't... if they did

nothing. Do something. Especially because the iPhone if I'm remembering right, the iPhone 13 Pro got a higher quality ultrawide and the iPhone 13 did not. And that made the change between color and resolution way closer.

I expect, personally expect that will come down to the iPhone 13, that the ultra-wide will be high quality. Is this rear-facing only, or if they upgrade the front-facing camera, would that be fine? I think any camera. Any camera. Yeah.

Okay. I think that's good. I like the idea. I wonder. We have a bunch of pics that are related to the iphone 14 and i i think it's just kind of really hazy of like what if you're if you're differentiating these pro models from the the non-pro models and you've been doing that for a little while what is the path for for features from the pro models to move down right like because there's

pro motion which could come down there's the lidar sensor there's promotion, which could come down. There's the LIDAR sensor. There's other camera stuff. Like there's a bunch of stuff in the pro phones that could come down. When do they do that? Is it now? Is it not now? Do they spread the prices between them even further? Right. We held down the price of the iPhone 14, but not the iPhone 14 Pro, right? Like it's all out there. And I think that that's one of the big, what I consider at least, maybe I'm not reading the right rumor articles

or remembering them, but I think that there's more mystery about what exactly gets pulled into the 14 because everybody's focused on the shiny 14 Pro new features. But I think it's just as interesting about what Pro features come out of the Pro line into the regular line. Yep, I agree with you.

Alright, um... You gonna pick one of those? I am not. Certainly not. Can I just pause you then before you give your last bit? Yes. Because you mentioned the LiDAR, because I was considering that one. And that is a real question to me of when does the lidar

sensor come to the regular iphone and like the regular ipad like when does that happen because it feels like that is only becoming more and more of a future thing like or does it never happen because they're only doing it to get information for the sense for the headset and like they don't feel they need it on everything i don't know but i figured it would have happened by now that would be my gut feeling my my guess is that it's a pro feature because the only people using it are developers or people who are interested in ar or in and really if you're if you're lidar scanning furniture in your house or whatever like you could just say well well, that's a pro feature, but how many people are using the LIDAR sensor for it to, for it to matter? I mean, Apple knows, I suppose, but it would be one of those things that would be easy to keep off of non-pro products

and just be like, you know, that's, it's a pro feature. I don't know. All right. Final pick in the iPhone round. Yes. It is a little amorphous, but you know what I'm talking about here. Pro phones get a camera software feature that other phones do not have. So this is the mysterious, there'll be something great in the new camera on the pro phone that necessitates a change to the camera app in some way okay we'll see my clarifying question for you because i have a hope a personal hope so like will this be only an addition of a feature or could a removal of a feature oh well i mean i i you're thinking about sweater mode yes which i'm hoping that the higher quality sensor means they won't need to do deep fusion

anymore. I have a problem with that only in the sense that I have a hard time believing that Apple is going to declare a feature dead on stage. Right. We could maybe infer it. But I will say David has made a good point in the chat, 8K video recording, which seems pretty good and that would do it. Sure, 8K video recording, astrophotography, any kind of mode change that they do based on the new thing.

Maybe you're changing between the ways that the binning works, right? They have different ways of doing it that are on that very particular camera that gets different effects. I don't know what it is. I'm kind of open to whatever. But I think if you're putting that new camera on there, one of the Apple like tricks, one of their moves is they're also updating the software with a thing and the software and the hardware work together and all that. Also, I'll just say as somebody who writes a book about photos every year, and this year I decided I'm going to do a chapter about the camera app because there's so

many features that feed into the photos app that come out of the camera app. And I had that moment where I thought, oh yeah, I can't write that chapter now because Apple's going to blow it out of the water in September. That's going to happen, right? They're going to do a new, oh, surprise. The new camera app is even more different than you thought. We've changed the entire UI. Yeah. Yeah. So we'll see. We'll see. I'm going to go first with at least one Apple Watch screen is bigger than any previous watch. It's time. The big Apple Watch, the bigger Apple Watch. It could just be that both Apple Watches are a little bit bigger, or it could be that there is a mega watch that is now going to be released. This wasn't in our picks,

and there was a rumor before today. I don't know what I think about it. It's like conflicting rumors about whether Apple Watch bands will fit. But I feel like we've been through this already. We went through this before. Yeah. About whether Apple Watch bands will fit or not.

And I don't know. I don't think it's going to be that much bigger. It will be a bit bigger though. This is the potential pro one. Apple Watch bands are not. Yeah, Apple Watch bands are not compatible across sizes so a bigger watch would probably necessitate a bigger band i would think unless they try unless they work hard to maintain that right like because they may they've grown the the the two sizes and

kept band compatibility yeah you're right it could just be a third one right but the large one and the small one don't share compatibility so if there's a third model that's even larger it might not share compatibility that's a very good point i hadn't considered that yeah it's like it's different right it's very different right it's a third size if it's like small medium and large all the mediums which we've thought of as the big watch are shared and all the smalls are shared but But it might be that this new one is not. Or it might be that it is. I honestly don't know.

It's not like this bigger screened watch is going to replace the current biggest. Doesn't seem like it would. No. Right. All right. I'm just going to throw in, it's an annual pick for us. Somebody's got to pick it. The new health-related sensor on the Apple Watch.

Rumors are that there's going to be a temperature sensor on there so yeah um that's what i'm pretty much staking remember it's your the back of your wrist is slightly warmer now that's what it's going to know uh but you know i i had this in my my little short list but it was relatively low down because i feel like i've been burned on this pic too many oh yeah you have you have you have but i think this is the year though this is this is the year this time not this time not this time this time we're gonna get it right this time we got the external display we got external display support for the ipad this is the year where everything comes true i'm gonna make a quick switch out here in my list

i don't want to double i felt like i was gonna to end up doubling down too much i'm going to say i'll i'll throw in one more item about the temperature thing which is just to say what i want to see is i'm really interested in the narrative i always say that right i always say about everything it's like what how does apple spin this but i'm really interested in the narrative about a temperature sensor because there are with all the watch features there are like FDA issues, but there's also like, what are the benefits to this? And as we've talked about, we've chronicled on Upgrade, some of the contortions that they've had to do about things like the oxygen sensor, where they're like, well, it's not for medical use, but you can look at it, but it's really not

for medical use. So for the temperature thing, that's the question, is what's that story? And what I'm hoping the story is going to be is something like we're able to monitor your body temperature fluctuations over time and then identify any time it deviates and give you a warning so that you could then use an actual thermometer and think that you might have a – there's a possibility that you're starting to run a fever. But how do they tell that story? What are they allowed to say? We'll see. But that – I'm always fascinated about how apple has to spin health related features in the apple watch because they're so highly regulated so my second pick is at least one watch gets longer battery life

oh yeah you know what actually as i say that let me ask you a question. Okay. Because the new watch hasn't got a previous model, right? Right. Well, you could say new watch has most battery life of any Apple Watch ever or something like that if you wanted to. Yeah, because I think that's more what I'm going for, that the new watch has the highest battery life. That's kind of more what i mean like it's very possible that the regular watch will also get more battery but that's not you know yeah well how about new watch has longest rated uh battery life ever yeah right because that's the idea here is they're going to make a claim it's like this is the longest apple

watch battery life we have ever had yeah so. So that's what I'm going for. Because I think that, to me, honestly, feels like the reason you make the thing bigger. Right? Yes. Number one reason. It's one of the big two reasons for making it bigger. You make it bigger so you can put a bigger battery in it.

Because I think people really want that. That feels pro, right? Like it's got the, it lasts longer, like last longer. Like you, you're so active, right? You're like all over the place, right? And you're killing, you're, you're doing eight workouts a day and those really kill the battery. And we, we, we, you know, most people don't, but you do because you're awesome. And now we've got to watch for you.

That isn't going to let you down because you're awesome. Did we mention that you're awesome and extreme because also the longer battery life it tells stories for like a bunch of different things like you can also say like you're a frequent traveler and your battery's often dying now it won't with the pro apple watch you know like there's there's a bunch of different stories that they can tell for sure that aren't that aren't sports right because this is one of the things where like originally we were talking about this is like it's the extreme sports watch but then over time that story has started to refine and it's like maybe that's just one of

the things that it's good for and i feel like that's more likely for apple than to like oh we made this watch and it's just for people that climb mountains. That doesn't really seem like something that they would do. Right. We'll see. I'm going to say new Apple Watch SE. Fails about time. I'm hopeful that this will be the end of the, we're keeping very old watch models around and also there's an SE strategy

and replace it with, I mean, they may keep an old watch model around that's fine but that the it feels like the old se which was what three years ago now was a misfire that they wanted it to be their low-end watch and they couldn't get it there. And so they kept the Apple Watch 3 around. And it's still technically around. The challenge is that the current SE is $279, and the 3 is $199. I don't know how they're going to square that,

but I feel like it's time for them to recalibrate what the SE is and maybe even make it cheaper, believe it or not, so that they can get rid of the 3. But we'll see. This is a shot in the dark, but it feels like, there are some rumors about it, but it also feels like this has been a sore point in the Apple Watch product line for a few years now, that it can't do what they want. But look, they don't want that Series 3 to still be hanging out there, but they really like saying Apple Watch starts at $199. So do they come up with an SE at $249 or something like that? That's like a little more modern. You know, Jason, I had some kind of misplaced memory that they had gotten rid of the Series 3. I think, oh, it's that WatchOS 9 isn't coming to the Series 3, right? Yeah.

So this is just beginning of the end. Like if you, yeah, it seems like the Series 3 can't survive, right? It surely cannot. But if you go to the Apple Watch page right now. You can buy it. You can buy it. Good things come in three from £199, right?

You can give them £179 right now and you can get a watch that in like, oh, do you know what? Currently unavailable in the smallest size. The biggest size I can get. The smallest size, can't get it right now. Well, yeah, I mean, they can't be making them anymore, right? I gotta hope

so. I gotta hope so. If you can still buy this thing by the end of next week, I'll be so upset. But I will say- That would be quite a draft pick, really. That SE watch- One, two, three, still for sale.

I've been a bit of a hater of the SE because I think it's not good value at all. Like it never has been. I think that's part of the problem, right? Is that it didn't do any of the things that it was trying to do. It wasn't cheap enough and it didn't have enough of the things that it was trying to do. It wasn't cheap enough, and it didn't have enough of the good features. So me and Idina have been talking,

she wants to get a watch for her mom. And what we're most likely going to do is wait for the new one to come out and try and get a good deal on a Series 5 or Series 6 or something. Because many of the features that we would want her to have are not in the SE. Right. Which is okay on one level if that's true,

but I think that the problem is it's a lot easier to discount that if it's the cheap Apple Watch, but it's not. It's not the cheap one. It's got the Series 3 below it. Yeah, it wouldn't bother me if it was $179 or whatever, right? Because it's like, okay, I understand why it doesn't have an always-on display or fall detection or blood oxygen sensor. You know, like, I understand.

Right. But it's not. It does have fall detection, by the way. It does have. SE does have fall detection. Does it have all of the fall detection options? I think so, yeah. Okay.

Well, let's say it has that one. But many of the other detection options? I think so, yeah. Okay. Well, let's say it has that one, but many of the other features, right? It's just like you want all of it, or at least make it cheap, and it's neither. Anyway, my final pick. I've got to make a decision here as to whether I am going to...

Okay, so I am still going to double down on there being a brand new Apple Watch but I'm not going to go with the original pick that I was going to make I'm going to chicken out a little bit and say new watch face is announced not from WWDC okay so what goes into a special watch face

for a larger watch just we made some that are bigger and they're going to say that on stage it's like well we also have a few new or or is it going to be like extreme or taking advantage of the new space or for adventures or for active people or like i'm just wondering what the story is around those new watch faces that we haven't seen before my expectation is there will be new watch faces that take advantage of the larger screen. So like more complications on this watch face

or like we have a new modular one and it's got like a hundred rows of things on it or they just have a, like, for example, maybe they have a body temperature watch face. Ah, okay. Sure. I mean, that's a good one. That means that you get any model.

And, you know, Zach and the Discord pointed this out, and it's absolutely true. They add watch faces in September all the time. Often they don't mention them on stage, but they're in the screenshots. Yeah. So that's a challenge, right? Because we have to compare.

We have to do a little bit of an analysis of what was on the screen. And is that a face we haven't seen before? I think i got a point at one point for that so yeah it i think it's something they can do and should do i mean they should always be adding new watch faces all the time anyway because why not but and they can do it in september because it as long as they stick with the conventions of complications it doesn't require any developer testing so they can just announce these new things and they can have they should always have i think some for watch os and some that take advantage of whatever features are new in the watch hardware

so that's my final pick new watch faces all right well i'm gonna do a naming pick and say it's apple watch pro all right okay i feel like you're probably right um if i was like All right. Okay. I feel like you're probably right. If I was like, so I only had one naming pick on my short list and it was pro. Pull one out for extreme, right? Because I love that name. I've seen people in the Discord over the last week

say max, which also could still be the case. But because it's going to be the most expensive they're probably going to go with pro right it breaks it breaks compatibility also allows them to have a pro max later but it breaks compatibility it's like a new model how do you place it above the others i think the biggest threat is that they don't call it anything they just say that's a larger size it's just apple watch and it comes in three sizes it's like the it's the others. I think the biggest threat is that they don't call it anything. They just say it's a larger size. It's just Apple Watch and it comes in three sizes.

It's the Apple Watch Series 8 52mm or whatever. Yeah. I think that's the danger is that they won't differentiate it by product name at all. It's just part of the Apple Watch Series 8. Interesting. I hadn't thought of that, but that... You know what the only the only

fortunately i did well no the only thing in your favor is that the se exists yeah right that isn't just called like and i think the reason that is because it doesn't have all the features right so how you see this is the question is it going to have any features that's different probably not because if it's just larger with a bigger battery then why is it not to have any features that's different probably not because if it's just larger with a bigger battery then why is it not just a series 8 i'm talking myself out of this pick now which is unfortunate i'm not happy with any of my pick choices here though do you know what honestly i actually think they might not name it now because if it is just a longer battery life and that's it and the bigger screen there may be some other features in it though there may be some maybe right like some some pics that we

have not made here that i think could happen would be things that would allow it to be i'm also keeping in mind there's a rumor that it's only going to be made of the rugged materials like titanium or something like that so it's essentially a replacement for the apple watch edition which technically isn't a different product it's still part of the series 8 like we would never consider that its own thing right right but it is edition right so they could they could potentially do that but right isn't that isn't that interesting um because they could also just say it's only available as an edition um It's a mystery. I'm going to, I mean, but you know, I made that pick.

So even though I've talked myself out of it, I feel like I already made it. The pick is in. This isn't the pick, but like I would say if we said like it doesn't get a name and it was the edition, I would say it doesn't get a name. Right. You know what I mean? Because like edition is just a configuration of materials.

I'm actually now, I'm now coming around that they will not give this a name and you heard it here first by the way yeah if this is just part of series eight that wasn't one of the picks i could choose though so here we are i'm gonna go with it you're gonna go so you're jason your final pick is and the final pick of the watch well i mean are you gonna let me change it because then maybe i'll consider changing it but i did say it if you want to change your pick now to that go for it because i wouldn't have put it in my in my list but if so if you want to say that the new apple watch is just part of the series eight line or however you want to word it that's fine by me so tempting because I like that a lot

but I don't like it enough that it would have been one of my top three yeah that's a good question I may I may I may I am now though as we speak putting this as a uh potential bricky pick i'm going to i'm going to keep it where i play it where play it where it lies i said pro we're going to go with that i'm going to i'm going to say that they're going to

attach a pro name to it why not but i want full credit if you pick that on other podcasts. I'm writing it down now. Spoilers. This is now one of four potential risky picks that I'm putting in because we have to do this because we have to all agree on them in advance because otherwise we fight bloody murder on podcasts. It's madness. But that one I think is pretty good because I haven't seen anybody say that so far. So I feel like that would be risky.

with it i think there's something about differentiating the line and saying look one of the one of the solutions to how do we get to have expensive Apple Watches and not expensive Apple Watches, like the problems with the SE and the Series 3, is to ultimately split the line into a pro line and a not pro line. And this might be a way to start down that path of having more expensive Apple Watches and less expensive Apple Watches. But I could also see the counter argument, which you know let's keep it simple they range in sizes and then there's like the old models and the SE and and they're different I can see it both ways which is why it's a pick because I don't really know what's going to happen I want to give Joe Steele credit in the discord uh that this is an extra thing I just think it's really good so I want to say that the purple color could be called Twilight. I like that. Why not?

So this flows with the original AirPods. So they were kind of around for two years before they created the second version of them. This has been something heavily rumored for a while. What features it will get, I don't know, really. Potentially a slightly refined design. There was some rumors of fitness features for a while that went by the wayside.

There's been some, I think, code found about a potential new Bluetooth technology for higher quality and lower battery life that's been found on one of the betas. So we'll see. But I know that just I'm ready because I want a new pair because my battery life is starting to die pretty quickly. Well, I'm looking forward to this.

watch category no of course yeah then i'm going to pick this apple fitness plus features previously unannounced right because if they announced do they announce some new ones in wwc i'm not sure if they don't think so the reason i've gone with this is this just fits the pattern of the last few years like when they talk about the apple watch they talk about fitness plus because it's kind of like a one two and fitness plus workout types feels like a really easy thing to just keep adding because you only have to shoot so many of them right and then they're just there it's part of the catalog you just keep growing the catalog uh at a certain point you'd assume that they would try and do as many as they possibly could for like however many can fit uh to to match up with the workout types they are from the apple watch you know i was just thinking

like if i was assuming there would be any services mentioned, it would be Fitness Plus. And so I'm assuming they will take a trip to, you know, Kevin Lynch will go back down to the gym and there'll be some new Fitness Plus stuff. It's a good fit with Apple Watch, right? Because the Fitness Plus is an Apple Watch service, essentially. So it makes sense. This is the time to do it. I think I like your pick. I think that's good. So now I want it just in case. Yeah.

that we like the picks in the other category just so we can kind of lay the other category just so we can kind of lay the groundwork for what we realistically think is possible at this event i think we'll talk about that once you picture the last one okay can i make a modification because we've got the ted lasso pick right which is there's a ted lasso video yeah how about this one as an alteration apple tv plus character or characters appear in character in a promo video. Yes, but it's not a trailer is what you're saying. Right.

Right. So what I'm saying is is it or I don't even need to say in promo video appear in character just for this. Just for this event. Some original content for this event. What I'm saying is could it be ted lasso

yes could it be the severance people yes it could be any kind of like a character for it could be the morning show people they they could be but somebody from out of apple tv plus appears just in a thing made for this event. It's not a trailer. Because I feel like they got to do that at some point, right? They got to do that. If they ever do it with Severance, I will think someone over there has lost their mind.

I know, but it got nominated for a lot of Emmys. Like, what would, I'll tell you what would be the absolute greatest thing is if they're going downstairs, you know, like how they go through the building. Oh, yeah.

And they go through the severance floor. Now, that would be amazing. Let me give you a pitch. One of those transitions between videos, somebody's going down a white hallway, like we're headed to the let's check in on Craig or whatever. And they go into the room and it's the severance room and they're like well that's what i'm sorry wrong room that would be unbelievable if they did right because i would love it i will just say by the way canthra mentioned this we never spoke about on the show john ham's going to be in the morning show that is like the

best follow-up of all time to those fantastic ads that they were doing everyone but john ham i do not know if this was intentional or not right but love it i love that john ham's going to be in the morning show makes me more excited for that he made it he did it more excited for that season i'm not confident about this pick at all but i am left with it so there we are if they do that thing that we both want now of going through a floor and it's a severance floor, best Apple event ever. Because that would just be bananas good. Weird, but brilliant. I would love that so much.

Right. Just good for the comedy of it. I also was thinking about this because there's a Colbert bit that was Stephen Colbert cut out of severance. And so they're shooting, you know, they were able to shoot that at some point in the Severance sets, right? Yeah. And that's part of the thing. That's why I keep thinking

about Ted Lasso too is that they got this third season of Ted Lasso that they have shot or they just finished shooting or are shooting. I don't know exactly the timing, but like that's,

that's when you would want to do it, right? As a part of or right before or after shooting where you've got the sets and you've got the actors and they look like their characters and that would be the time to do it, right? I'm surprised we haven't gotten the Ted Lasso bit up to now, but maybe it just doesn't make sense. Severance thing might make sense. Maybe it's something else. I don't know. I'm just saying, let's throw it in there because I got nothing else. My other choices here are no good.

So that's what I'm going to choose. So let's go through those then. So that's the draft done. Draft locked up. That's it. Now, the other things that were in this category was new AirPods Max, some AirPods in non-white colors. Yeah, I love putting that one in there.

What if iPairpods weren't white? Just for a moment, imagine. That's my color. That's my colors are coming out. A new iPad Air is announced. A new iPad Air is announced. A new regular iPad is announced. Yeah, it's going to be next month. Or sorry, in two months, because it's not September yet.

Apple TV Plus trailers or promo videos shown. That could happen. Very spotty, this one, though. Yeah, it comes and goes. Yeah. They could get to boast about all their Emmy nominations and talk about how great that service is. you know maybe there's an apple tv announcement that's that's not been rumored but they you know there could be apple tv related stuff it's possible that's on here

uh new tv hardware announced as a possibility but not i'm not holding that hope uh we usually have a variance of craig is seen so much person just not supposed to be seen but we didn't do those this time because i don't know except for phil schiller's voice is heard which i just like disembodied for sure hey everybody right maybe he's in the severance floor the stage of the steve jobs theater is seen what's the possibility man see so so that's the counter pick to my pick of it not being like here so here's one of the weird things is could they do a video that's entirely pre-recorded and screen it at the stave steve jobs theater for people sitting in the steve jobs theater that takes place in the steve jobs theater but it's not taking place there it

gets very confusing right like but we're in the steve jobs theater and tim's not there we're watching tim on but he's not there i mean what we figure it out but i'm just saying would they do that if it's not live maybe but it's much more spotty than the loving you know panning past the apple park campus and seeing the rainbow stage uh so yeah on that as well one of the picks for some of the event is live sure uh the event mentions that they are welcoming people back to Apple Park. Right. Which could happen. They could say it even in a pre-recorded bit. They could say, you know, we're getting back to work here at Apple Park. If it's a live event, they would absolutely be like, it's so great to be back live here at Apple Park with all of you, if they choose

to do that. But I pick that they won't. So I'm not going to counter that with another pick. Because again, we could very much have what happened at WWDC. I actually would expect that. At the very least, Tim comes out and welcomes you all and says, like, here's a video. And then the video starts at the same time

it starts for everybody else. Yep. Messaging about the benefits of the App Store. Oh, man. That's a perennial. Mm-hmm. And they are going to be talking about ios release presumably and so saying we love we love developers and isn't the app store great this could be a time where they

could do that if they feel they need to apple ar vr hardware announced sorry i mean we're not expecting it right i don't i can't believe we didn't put game demo in here because game demo is always good for a laugh there There's usually a game demo. Yeah, but... There's almost always a game demo. Snoozy time. A new HomePod hardware announced. Possible.

This one? Anything's possible. I think of all of the other hardware picks, like outside of AirPods, I would maybe rank HomePod as next. Maybe. Or most likely for this event? Or Apple TV? I actually think HomePod is more

likely than Apple TV. Yeah. I think, and this would go to choosing the under, which I didn't do for the runtime, is I think that six months ago they planned on this being the AR VR event.

Yes. And now it... But it's been a while that we have kind of known that they weren't gonna probably do it that way that it's going to be later on or early next year that's either like end of this year starting next year as i know do the event something like that dedicated event is i'm still i'm still thinking that you never know maybe they surprise us all just surprise us all wouldn't surprise us all. Wouldn't that be fun? Wouldn't that be fun? Alright, so next week kind of some information on what's going to

be happening, right? So we won't be recording on Monday. We will be holding until Wednesday because that's when the Apple event is. We will be recording live as soon as we can after the event is. We will be recording live as soon as we can after the event ends.

Right. If we, if we, if we learn that we've got an ability to record at a particular time, we'll announce that. Um, last WWDC, I was down on the Apple campus and they had set up a recording area. If, if that repeats, then we would have the ability to do it a little earlier. If I come home, it will be a little later because I got to drive all the way home. So we'll keep you updated about that if you want to listen live. And then of course, the episode will come out later on Wednesday too. It's just that we have to record it and then it has to be edited and then it'll be out so everything will be pushed back to wednesday um sort of late in the day yeah so it will be wednesday still the episode will come out but if you want to hear our impressions immediately tune in live and we'll be sharing

about when we're going to do that and because jason will be at the event we can presume there will be a hands-on area and you will be able to come to the episode with immediate iPhone impressions, which has not happened for an incredibly long time.
