Oh, fellow gamers, and welcome to the Video Gamers podcast.
Today, we're taking a look at the latest from the Triple I Initiative Showcase.
We got a bunch of indie reveals, updates, and some games that could actually end up bringing pretty big deals this year.
maybe even Game of the Year material.
Ah, but probably not.
I am your host, Ace, and joining me.
He and I are currently in a legal custody battle for the right to talk about these games first.
It's Josh.
All right.
Okay, we got to put this dispute to rest, Ace, because you put in all the work to find these games.
I did, yeah.
And then we cherry-picked the best games out of the bunch, and then we cherry-picked the best games out of the bunch,
and then we put them on the main show or our This Weeking Gaming episode or something like that.
And then sometimes we like to joke around about the games that you find for us.
And you know, it's come to my attention that maybe on the last indie episode that I was a little harsh on a few games.
Maybe on the last indie episode you took five of my games and I had to find replacements within like two hours.
Yeah, those replacements you found were not the best.
But I will say this.
We always listen to feedback from everybody.
We generally appreciate every comment we get.
And I would just like to say something to the people out there that felt like I was hard on these games.
It worked because the list of games that Ace found for this episode are way better than they were last time.
So I would just like to say, I regret nothing because it worked.
And now we have a fantastic list of indie games to talk about.
So there you go.
I regret nothing.
I'm going to continue to bully my co-host.
I want to apologize for absolutely nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
Also, listen, if you've been listening to this podcast for any length of time at all,
you should don't ever take us seriously.
We're a bunch of dofusses that talk video games and love video games.
We are friends.
We are not industry people.
We have always said this.
We will never be industry people.
we are your everyday gamers and we talk like your everyday gamers and sometimes that means we don't
like games it's nothing personal it's just our opinions but we have always said we're going to give
our honest good this like honest to good opinion is that the right honest to goodness honest to good is
the word yeah i think that's the turn of phrase that that felt that is the turn of phrase i don't
i don't know if people know this but i don't talk a whole lot struggling so struggling struggling
struggling
I hate you both
Yeah
Those games are stupid
All right
But also
Well I'm gonna go ahead and introduce our other co-
This is like goodness to Hornet
Like
It didn't sound right when I was saying it
And I was like wait
Oh my gosh
It's already gone off the rails
What about me?
Yeah
Quick
Introduce the other dude of this ace
I'm pretty sure
If we left him in the middle of the woods
And came back later
He'd have a ways your time
surviving there than in this game
called Don't Starve Elsewhere
It's Ryan
You're probably right
Don't starve is ridiculous
But I'm so excited
I can't wait to talk about this
Well guys
We kind of touched on a little bit earlier this week
Looking into the Triple I Inissue showcase
Which again
Best way to do a showcase
Ever
Take note
Yes
Take note everybody
Everybody else
Please PlayStation Nintendo
Nintendo, whoever you are out there.
No, we wanted to be like the Oscars.
Yeah, I don't care.
I don't want to hear any like sob stories before you go into your video game
unless it has to do with the actual video game.
Your announcer's not funny.
Their jokes aren't good.
Just give us trailers and gameplay, dude.
In the kindest way possible.
Yeah.
Shut up.
Just like, stop talking.
Show me what you made.
Like, I just want to see what you did.
But it was an amazing show.
showcase 45 minutes straight on nothing but banger games and banger dc's and all sorts of cool
stuff that we had seen before and hadn't seen so it was really cool so we're going to go ahead
and jump right in with the strangest game of this showcase i think called prove your human
it's like a sci-fi narrative game where you're going to have to test and manipulate an ai that
believes it is human while also trying to uncover the deeper mystery of the entire game what did you
guys think of this game at first glance i got a question for you on this one okay prove your human ace
uh uh he's just chugging soda he's just chugging soda he chugged it so he chugged too much there he's
he's gonna die okay i made error i splashed water soda all over and it went up his nose okay i believe
you ace good job buddy yeah i'm human he's human yeah okay because no i i would be stupid enough to
By the way, listeners, those you who are audio-only listeners, you might want to turn on the video for that part.
Yeah.
Are you okay?
I felt like that went up your nose.
I'm fine.
Okay.
So you are human, then.
He'll survive.
Like, this game looks bananas to me, but, like, in a good way?
It's a puzzle game, clearly.
But it's also like a puzzle horror game.
But it's like a captcha game at the same time.
Like, they keep just doing the captcha part of it.
We've been trained for this, dude.
we've been training for so long.
Oh yeah, we know how to prove we're human.
Yeah.
Click where there's a bicycle.
Bam, bam, bam, bam, bam.
I'm good to go.
But then, like, do you guys ever have the thing where there's like the fraction of like the tire in the one?
Do I click?
Do I not?
Is it not part of the bicycle?
Because technically it is.
And then you just get torn with indecision and you're like, I don't know.
And then it makes your restart.
It's like, find the fire hydrants.
Yeah.
But then there's like the chain that's hanging down on the fire hydrant.
I'm like, well, it's technically part of the hydrant.
but it's in a different square.
You can't win with CAPTCHAs, dude.
You generally can't win.
But overall, this game is horrifying looking.
It is creepy because it's a face,
it's a human face at the end of like,
it's basically if Gladys tried to put a face on
and then say she's human.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And then she believes she's fully human.
And then she believes that she's human
and you're trying to show like, no, you're not human.
But then that, what if you anger, like your AI overlord that is,
like trying to convince.
Like doesn't that just become,
I have no mouth and I must
scream at that point?
Yeah, I think so.
So I don't know.
I like the premise of this game.
I really enjoy puzzle games.
I do wonder about the number
of captions that they show,
but I have a feeling like the captions
are to like unveil
story elements or something like that.
I do too.
I probably go to be important.
It's a narrative game.
Right.
I think it'll be important.
Yeah.
Yep.
I think this one looks really neat though.
I agree.
What are you, Ryan?
What did you think overall?
Same.
I thought it was unique.
We always ask for different styles, different types of games.
I mean, a game where you have to do CAPTCHA, like, kind of solving throughout it.
And then the puzzle stuff and a deep narrative of an AI wanting to be human type thing.
Like, I think it's something different.
It's unique.
And it looked cool.
So, yeah, I'm in on it.
I think it looks pretty neat.
I think it's something we couldn't be too far from either.
No, that's it.
Right.
The topic is kind of on point lately.
This was one of the rare games where we didn't get like a release date.
We didn't get like a release year for it.
It was just to be announced.
And as far as I know, it's only coming to PC as in right now.
But it's one I'm definitely keeping my eye on because it just stood out so much to me within this showcase.
And this showcase had a lot of great stuff.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Don't get me wrong.
Moving on to Alabaster Don,
which is a 2.5D action RPG
with fast-paced combat,
puzzles,
world building,
after some kind of divine collapse or whatever.
And then it's from the creators
of a game called Crosscode,
which isn't a name I'm familiar with,
but when we brought it up in our Discord,
people like Crosscode boys.
Yeah.
Yep.
Crosscode is apparently a beloved game
that a lot of people really love
that I didn't even know about
until they were like, why?
You don't know crosscode?
And then we're like, wait, okay.
So actually did some digging.
And it turns out that a lot of people love crosscode.
And then so we're mentioning Alabaster Dawn
so that we don't get attacked by the crosscode crowd.
That is the point.
So that's for you, everybody.
because initially we were like
this just looks like another pixel
JRP
but
you can't say that
I mean what I meant is this looks like
an amazing one of a kind
pixel based JRP
that I'm sure is going to blow
the doors off of everybody
that is interested in this game
I
actually think this game looks pretty good guys
I think it looks pretty good as well.
I also think it's already got a leg up on most pixel RPGs for Ryan because it's not turn-based.
It is not.
It is real-time action.
Aside from the real-time action, too, I do kind of genuinely like the look of it.
It is kind of a throwback look and style.
But also, as you traverse the world and you have these towns, you can see the society, like,
develop through.
Yeah, that was cool.
Repairing, like in fixing their town.
And so, like, as you play, you see everything progress.
So it gives you kind of almost a sense of not only progress through time, but like an
achievement of like you're doing something and you're getting stuff done and like the town's
rebuilding.
And, you know, so there are some cool aspects to it, you know, throughout the game.
Yeah.
And you get to see like the NPCs are aging as time goes on to, which is like, this is just
kind of cool.
Yeah.
This is a really, like, real world.
Yeah.
I, you know, there's a lot of times where I think these games look like they're a dime a dozen.
And I, this is not meant to offend anybody, but like, you know, some, some bigger ones lately, like Octopath Traveler, this Alabaster Dawn that's coming up.
There's been a few others that have very, very similar styles.
And they, I'll be honest, they kind of all look the same to me.
But I know that people freaking love them at the same time.
And there's probably three or four other series.
like in the style that I'm completely whiffing on right now.
But like these games when they land, they freaking land, dude.
And I have not played a good like JRP like this in a really long time.
Yeah.
It's like my brain's kind of hungry for one of those because again,
when you get into them and they stick,
they become like life.
It is like everything.
You know, like the characters, the world,
the combat, the build.
the story, like all this stuff starts to just click for people.
And I kind of want that.
And with this action-based stuff that you see in this,
and if you dig into the trailer a little bit,
you start to see like skills and the skills evolving
and these different builds and the different characters.
And they're saying you have to complete all these trials,
which I really like and stuff like that.
And it's like, I think there's probably like a really good video game here.
It's just like, how do I find the time to,
try to get invested in this because most of the time these games are like 80 freaking hours
at the same time.
And it's what I was going to say.
These JRPGs, they're not for the faint of heart.
Right.
And it's so daunting to try to get into.
But man, if you get into one of these, they wind up just hitting so well at the same time.
So I am really curious about Alabaster Dawn, dude, because it looks like it checks all the boxes
for this style of game.
Yeah, I agree.
well the good news about alabasterdon is it is releasing may 7th this year into early access
early access a game like that's what i was going to ask how do you early access a jrpg
i don't know just finish the story they just all want to do it they just all want early access
so they don't have to pay uh uh testers or anything like that well it'll be early access exclusive to
Steam, obviously, but with consoles planned later down the line, presumably for the full release.
That would be my guess.
Yeah.
But yeah.
Definitely one of the big ones to definitely keep your eye on.
And you don't have to wait long for it if you're on PC like us.
So, you know, PC Master Race.
PC Master Race.
Moving on to a game that we are all too familiar with.
It is the return of our favorite indie this year so far.
Yeah. Oh, man. Just when you thought Karen was done giving you gifts, they brought us the gift of free DLC coming later this summer.
Yeah, buddy.
How you feel like that, Ryan?
I'm so stoked.
Dude, not only to create such an amazing game, put all that work into it, make something
that's so magnificent, but then come in and be like, hey, we're going to give you more.
Oh, by the way, it's free.
You know, it's not like it was junk.
There are 9.5s and 10s across the board on Karen, like for scores.
And so to come in and just give us this free gameplay,
and more content
I love it what a cool thing
by the devs and
I think it's just gonna sell more copies
I love it I agree
I think it'll sell a lot more copies
and I also I liked that it kind of showed
new environments for us to start climbing like
yeah they show a beach they show
a huge indoor climbing area
yep I was like
Marco's in there just chilling in the background
yeah I was like oh this is gonna be so cool
love it it proves the passion
that devs have when they do something
like this where your game is a smashing success and then you still put out free DLC after the fact
like that shows you that they absolutely just love the game and you know what I'm like and it's not like
oh let's try to get more money out of people right like yeah you know and I'm not saying that you know
there aren't some really awesome dLCs out there but when you come off the success that karen had
and then you continue that passion to say hey look here's something else for people it just proves that
supporting a good studio, you're supporting a good game at that point. And I love to see stuff like
this, dude. It reminds me so much of, um, with the hell divers. So remember when we were, Josh,
remember when we were like doing hell diver stuff and we're like, okay, I, I don't need this, but I want to,
I want to buy these extra things because I want to give them money. Right. Like, they're not charging
me money. I want to give them money because I'm having so much fun. And I remember looking through the
comments on this stuff for Karen and people are like I mean I love that it's free but I want to pay
you like you deserve it and that's when you know it's a good game and it's a good developer is that
they're not in it for just every penny and they're not just trying to squeeze you out every dime
they're they're just trying to create something amazing that people will love and and then
naturally you know people are going to pay for that they're going to they're going to reciprocate
so um I love it I think it's so cool and I can't wait to check out what they what they've created
for the extra stuff.
I also think it says a lot about Cairn
that it came out in January
and it's April and we're still
pretty high up on it.
Yeah.
Oh yeah.
Like we're still.
Like sometimes, you know,
you move away from a game.
It's been a few months.
You're like,
eh, maybe it wasn't as good as I thought it was.
No, I believe Karen is just as good as it.
It's so good.
It's so good.
I genuinely believe that.
Uh, but Karen's DLC.
It'll be sometime in summer this year.
It'll be for PC and PlayStation 5.
So keep your eye out for that.
That'll be a lot of it.
lot of fun. And free. Don't forget it's free.
And free. Yeah.
Freaking free! Oh, man.
Got to love it. Got to love when indie does just give you free
DLC. Like, that's what Holo Nights known for is the fact that all of its content was just
free DLC after the fact. Yep.
But moving on to Thickest Thieves, a name we are familiar with.
However, boys, things have changed in the Thiefdom.
Oh.
I want a stealth action heist game with PVP and PVEE.
elements. It has now become
a game playable in solo and co-op
solely focused on
PVE and high stakes
heist.
How do we feel about
such a change?
Josh wants to kill people.
Listen, here's the thing.
I know that this
probably comes about
from the we don't want to be known
as like an extraction shooter
kind of game or an extraction game
because the premise was you were going up
against other squads of thieves to try to complete these heists and then get out and then
sabotaging them so that they couldn't complete the heist, you know, in that kind of thing.
And I get where it's like, okay, you have a little bit of overlap with the extraction shooter
genre and maybe you don't want that because that genre might not be the best right now.
But at the same time, there's got to be like not every game that has multiplayer or
competitive multiplayer needs to be like an extraction or I'm going to kill you or eliminate you
from this round kind of thing. I just worry that this is going to take a game that I thought
looked really unique and innovative and turn it into this is just a stealth fest at this point.
Maybe it works out for them. I don't know because we haven't played it. We haven't tried a demo
or anything like that for it.
But my concern is that you took away that unknown
of other people being in a match
and the things that can go with that
and the different stories that it can unfold in every single match
when you involve other real life people.
And you've turned it into all I have to do
is outsmart the AI in this now.
And it's just a stealth-based game at this point.
Like that's what worries me.
I'm still very interested in this game.
I'm still optimistic for it,
but this change makes me a little sad to be honest
because I feel like there would have been so much more there
if you had just found a way to go,
we want other people involved,
but we don't necessarily want it to be like an elimination
or sweaty kind of thing.
And there's got to be nice to do that.
What would you, like, I guess, like,
if that's the reason they got rid of it,
what would you have recognized?
commanded like to keep it in there.
Yeah, I mean, I told, I was, AIS and I were chatting about this earlier and it's like, take
combat out, you know, take it out completely, dude.
If you're worried that it's like, sabotage each other.
Yeah, just thinking about sabotage.
You can lay traps for people.
You can attract the guards to the position.
You can make it look like this room's been broken into, but maybe it hasn't.
Like there's any kind of like, let people be smart.
Let them be crafty and cunning because these are thieves, right?
They're burglars.
You're trying to outsmart the other people.
people, it doesn't have to be combat. You don't need to frag other people, you know what I mean,
to make, like to make it competitive. And so when you're taking out that competition part,
to me, because I'm very competitive minded, it's almost like you're taking away something that
was a big draw for me. And I get that you don't want your game to be sweaty, but figure out a way
to keep a little bit of that rivalry in competition, but not make it a sweaty endeavor at that.
You know, like, I don't know what that is.
Because again, I haven't played the game.
If I got my hands on it, I'm sure I could come up with it.
Oh, you should totally do this and not this kind of thing.
But the fact that they backed down completely from the competitive side of it, like, is a little sad to me.
Yeah, I'm sad to see them shrink away from it because it's, it made the game look and feel very unique.
And unique.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And also, like, they had the trailer where they showed off all the different character classes and like how they would have interacted with this like whole,
universe and other characters.
And I don't know if they've scrapped that too
and nod at this point. I don't know. I'm still
excited for Thieves, but
it's not the game I drafted at the beginning of the year.
Right. Me too. Yeah, I'm
super, I'm still excited
for it for sure, but
man, what, what
you know, we anticipated and what
it could have been, what we were thinking of,
and having that interaction,
there's just something different
to knowing that you're
combating with a
real live person on the other end that that is also trying to do what you're trying to do.
You know, whatever, whatever way that may be, like, there's something different to it than just, like, gameplay with, you know, PVE style kind of gameplay.
So, yeah, man, I, uh, maybe they can figure out a way.
Maybe they'll get backlash and then fix that, but I'm kind of hoping, like, what happens is it just kind of becomes a game mode thing where you could choose to do the PVE with a partner or later, you know.
Okay, yeah, that would be good.
Yeah, yeah.
Because options are always good.
Options are always good.
For sure.
More is always better, even if that sounds very greedy.
Yeah.
But Thickest Thieves did get a full release date of May 20th of this year.
Only on PC for now, unfortunately.
Hopefully we'll see some console ports if the game does well on PC.
I'm still going to pick it up.
I'm still going to enjoy it.
I'm still excited.
I'm just a little less excited.
Yeah.
I get it.
I totally.
I'll rob with you.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Join me and do my thievery.
If Dan said it's just solo and you can't do co-op, I would have been out.
That would lose me.
Like I would have been out.
But the fact that there's co-op, but again, you better have some freaking amazing AI in your game.
If it's not a competitive game with other people involved now, because that AI is going to be everything.
If you're not including the, like, the unknown of other players, that AI better be really, really outstanding.
Do you think it'll be kind of like maybe Outlast trials
Or you have like a maybe
But even then
You have your kind of hub where you can see other people
And then you go into your missions just with your squad
Oh like a L'Lest trials is so good
Yeah
Atlas trials is so good
It's so good
Continually
All right
We got a few more games to cover for the showcase
But that'll have to be right after this break
Instacart makes grocery shopping easier
And just because you're not doing the shopping yourself
Doesn't mean you don't care how it's done
With Instacart shopper notes, you can get particular about what you want right in the app.
Like rotissory chicken that's extra crispy, cheddar that's sharp as your skates, and lettuce you to actually pick yourself.
Just leave a note for your shopper so they can get it right for you without having to ask.
That way, you can get groceries just how you like.
Download the Instacart app and shop today.
Well, we are back from our break.
And just like the showcase, we're moving on to the next game.
Yes.
We're looking at a game called Machine Party.
is a chaotic
I want peas!
I forgot about the pea stabbing mini game.
Oh, Ryan, you love peas, don't you?
Ryan's getting shot just instantly.
He won't even, I'm not eating these peas.
I'm not playing.
You're not leaving the table.
He's your peas, Ryan.
He's not leaving that table.
Yeah, exactly.
It's a chaotic multiplayer party game
featuring a very bizarre and often violent minigames with a very dark and absurd tone.
The game looks like lethal company, for one thing.
But it's developed by the same developer as Shotgun Roulette.
If anyone's played that.
Didn't play it.
The silence says otherwise.
I remember you talking about it.
Didn't play it because I think this is where we were starting to make fun of making all these casino games into like rogue-like type games.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's for sure what it was.
Well, you can play it multiplayer.
now. You can play shotgun roulette with other people.
Oh, really?
Oh. Yeah. That's totally makes it way better.
It does because you can shoot your friends in the face.
Or buckshot. Sorry, buckshot roulette is what it's called.
I, yeah.
This game looks like somebody who has serious mental issues, wanted to make Mario Party just as dark.
We got Mario Party on PC, baby.
Yeah. And it, I'm kind of here for this. I will say this.
this game is going to come down to how fun these mini games are and how many the how many how many is the big one like you know the pee stabbing thing looks silly but is this just mash your button as fast as you can mash it because there are some things where it's like this is just going to be boring and repetitive if this is all we're doing but we did get glimpses into almost like a dance dance revolution thing where you have to hit the arrow keys in the different directions really fast while your guys are on these escalators.
and if you don't, then you fall into a pit of spikes and die.
There was another one where it shows you like a Rubik's cube with blocks missing,
and you have to duplicate that.
And then whoever is last gets just shot in the face and is out.
So like, exploded.
I love the dark side of this game.
But again, this is all going to come down to are your mini games fun?
And do you have enough of them to keep people playing for more than like one night?
Yeah.
Yeah, I think it'll definitely come down to all of that.
I know the YouTubers out there are going to have a lot of fun with it for a little bit.
I'll say that.
It's definitely a streamable game for sure.
I agree.
I love, I'm such a sucker for many games.
I love the competitive nature of something that's like 30 seconds to 60 seconds.
And it's like, that's it.
And you guys can just go all out on it.
And then you beat the other person or they be you and stuff.
So I love the thought of this, and especially being the multi-
player and us playing together. It seems so fun to me. Again, it's just, it's just the amount of games.
Because if, if there's only, you know, 10, like, you're going to get, you're going to burn through
them pretty quick. There's got to be a decent amount to where it always feels fresh. And then you
kind of somewhat feel comfortable with a few of them, you know, and you're like, oh, I know this one.
You know, you feel good about it. So, yeah, I love the look of this. I think it'll be so fun.
I just hope there's a lot of them.
Yeah, that's what I'm hoping.
As long as there's a lot of mini games,
I can see it being fun.
Yeah.
Are you just going to get to the P mini game every time, Ryan, and quit?
He's just like, no, I refuse to stab the peas.
I don't care if you kill me.
Bluh.
No peace for me.
But Machine Party should release later this year,
and it'll only be on PC, of course,
because I believe that's the only place this developer drops their games.
So maybe maybe someday.
Yeah.
All right.
Is the name you guys?
I've heard several times before.
I have a bad habit of bringing this game up as often as I can,
but it's a game called Dead as Disco.
Ace loves this game.
I love this game.
Ace love this game for the first time he saw it
to then he tried the demo on it,
and then he has been smitten ever since.
I think I have like six hours in the demo.
Yeah.
Oh my gosh.
Yeah.
It is a rhythm-based brawler game
where the combat sinks to the music,
and you're sort of blending the beat-em-up action
with stylish music performances and trying to hit everything on beat.
It's going to have boss fights.
It's going to have your ability to import your own music.
It's going to have its own original covers of songs like a hero.
And it's like, I can't believe this.
This looks insane.
I know you guys aren't huge on rhythm games,
but what did you think of what you saw of Dead Disco?
I think I know we played the demo from, you know, day one, you know, when it came
out and I can appreciate what they've done to put into this game and what it looks like.
I think the combat is fluid.
I think the music and the rhythm beats and like how they time it all together, that's
got to be so hard to do.
Oh, too.
Yeah.
To like, sync all that up and have it like that's your objective is to tie that in and
then do the rhythm of combat.
It's got to be so hard.
I'm not the biggest on rhythm style games.
Like rhythm to me is like rock band or beat saber.
Like that's what I like to play.
You know, if I'm going to do rhythm stuff.
Combat seems, it just seems weird to me, but I know people love it.
So I think it's going to be great.
I think they developed it great.
I think it looks fantastic.
And, you know, power to them for making what they've, you know, made.
It looks good.
Yeah.
I mean, no other game looks like this.
No, no.
Nothing.
I mean, and that's amazing.
And the ability to, in the ability to not only play all these songs that they have,
but import your own songs.
Yeah.
Like that's cool.
That's a really cool feature.
You can customize it.
You can import your own stuff and kind of tailor it to what you want to do.
Like it's just awesome.
Yeah.
I'm going to give A some validation on this one.
We pick on him because he loves it,
but he loves it for a reason because it's a darn good video game.
You know,
I'm with Ryan on the sense that it's like,
especially in a beat him up,
I have a weird thing where it's like,
I don't know when I'm supposed to push the button.
if I'm supposed to wait for the beat or not.
I want to punch now.
I want to punch now.
If it's a brawler,
I want to just beat the tar out of people,
but I'm not supposed to do that unless I'm waiting for this certain beat or something
like that.
So it's a little weird.
It's just a dissonance in my brain because it's like I want to go fast and pummel these
people,
but I'm supposed to wait and do it on the right beat,
which doesn't always jive for me.
But, dude,
this game is excellently developed.
It's beautiful.
It flows.
It reminds me a seafood for anybody that knew
in the combat system there
with just how it flows together
and you can kind of master things.
In this trailer specifically,
we got a glimpse at some of the boss fights,
which I thought were really cool.
You know, like you said, Ryan,
they allow you to import your own songs.
They have streamer safe songs
so you don't wind up with copyright issues
and stuff like that.
So it seems like they've thought of every angle on this.
This game is going to be top notch.
I'm curious about it,
But I just, again, it's like, dude, I don't know how I'm supposed to play a rhythm-based brawler.
And it's like, I just don't know.
I'm just going to wind up smashing buttons.
And then it's like, well, this game's fun.
But like I feel like I'm missing a huge part of it at the same time.
Yeah.
Unfortunately, I think Dead Is Discos one of those games that we just can't deep dive because it's just not you two's kind of game.
But it's one I could definitely do a solo thing with.
Yeah.
And it looks great.
And there's a reason that we're bringing it up for everybody.
because if you're not familiar with this game,
you should be.
Because again,
this is a top-notch game
that I think a lot of people
are absolutely going to love.
I was smitten with this game
from the moment I heard it's cover of Maniac.
We remember.
We know.
Like, genuinely, the song Maniac
while you're just fighting people
on a subway train was just crazy for me.
I loved it. It was so good.
But Deadest Disco was releasing an early access
May 5th only on PC.
And I was like,
Early Access for days this go.
May is Early Access Month.
What's going on in May?
Everything's May, but it's all early access.
Hasn't it been early access forever?
No.
No, it's been an exclusive demo that you can get at certain times.
Oh, so that was just a demo.
I've just been playing the demo.
It doesn't even have a boss fight.
Over and over and over.
Yeah.
There's one level and then Infinite Disco where you can upload your songs.
Oh.
So I've been able to play around with the Infinite Disco.
That's a good way to do a demo.
I do have a quick, I know we got a couple more games.
to go over real quick.
I have a question.
With them doing like the streamer friendly games
or songs and stuff like that,
do you guys think a lot of developers
are going to tailor games more towards streaming?
Oh, streamer mode is very popular.
Yeah, like really focus on that to like get.
Yeah, they do.
Once it takes off in the Twitch world and the streaming world,
like it'll kind of take off.
Yeah, a lot of developers actually do.
consider that when making a game because that's free marketing.
You're playing their game. You're saying nice things about their game.
That's good for them. And if you give them an easier way to avoid, you know, getting copyrighted
immediately. Which is the worst, by the way. I hate copyright. genuinely.
We get a hit. We get it by it all the time with YouTube. YouTube just hates us.
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. YouTube, not a fan of my music choices.
Yeah. All right. This was the big announcement at the end,
I didn't want to save at the end because I got a different one I want to talk about.
Don't Starve Elsewhere.
The three equal to the Don't Starve series.
This one will be features co-op, new biomes, and expanded 3D exploration elements.
First game didn't have co-op.
Second game was all about co-op.
This one seems to be a mix of the two.
How do you fill out this, Ryan?
I know you've played the Don't Starves series before.
I, this is probably one of my favorite, like,
just raw survival games.
This battle's raw.
It's so raw.
It's so raw.
I know.
Dude, it's so hardcore.
Like there is no forgiveness at all.
I feel like you would hate this game.
I know.
And for some reason,
I don't know if it was the timing
or when I got the switch
and then we got it or I don't know what it was.
But I just,
I love this game so much.
And I played it with my daughter
once we got Don't Starved together.
And I played, I played just hours and hours and hours.
And then we would get like 30 days in.
And then something stupid would happen and we die.
And I'd be like, oh, and we would take a week or two off.
And then we'd be like, hey, you want to start another, you want to start another world?
And then we do it again.
It's just like, it's just like rust.
It's just like rust.
It's just like rust.
You take a break.
You reset and recalibrate.
And then you just go back into it again.
So yeah, I just, it's so unforgiving.
It's so horrible, but I can't stop playing it.
I love it.
Like the sounds, the, the, watching the trailer and everything, it's just like, oh, I'm like, oh, yeah, I'm in 100%.
Oh, yeah.
Like when it's just the black screen and you just hear the horn and they're, eh, right.
You're like, oh, it's don't starve.
Yep.
Yep.
It's so iconic.
I, I can't clean into these games.
I can't, I've tried.
I played the heck.
I played a lot of don't starve and don't starve together.
It's too hard.
That's what it's difficult.
I love survival crafting games.
I don't like.
Don't like the rogue-like nature of this game, where it's like they were showing one part where you're running around. You've got some robot guy. You can tell it's like later in the game. And I'm like, they come up against the boss. And my only thought was like, you're going to die to that boss because you don't know what to expect. And then you're going to lose everything because the game just resets you back to the beginning again. That doesn't work for me. Like I love progression. Don't run into the boss. I love progression. But when you take away all my progression because I don't even know what I'm supposed to expect, then it's like I
get infuriated. So I like art silence game is beautiful. It's super neat and unique. I can appreciate
everything about this. I will never play this game because I cannot stand the going back to square one
in a survival crafting game. Like I don't, it just doesn't jive with my brain, but I can appreciate
what this game is. And it baffles me that Ryan loves this so much. He's like, he's just totally okay.
I was, I was so surprised here. Ryan like had played. It's weird.
It's the only one.
It's the only one for sure.
But for some reason, I just, I love it so much.
I think what I would equate don't starve to is it's terraria if it hated you.
Yeah.
It's like, it's like, oh, the pain's finally gone.
I think I'm going to, oh, no, there it is.
I died again and I got to start all over again.
Well, it's not going to end here, I guess.
Yeah.
Yeah, we don't have a release date for Don't Starve elsewhere, unfortunately.
but it is confirmed for PC at least.
I imagine when we get close to release date,
they'll have some console limits up there
because they put all their games on console.
Don't starve actually cares about you console people.
Just remember that.
Our final game here, the showcase, Neverway.
It's a dark, atmospheric life sim RPG
that blends farming, relationships, and cosmic horror.
It's done by the pixel artist of Celeste.
And who is the musician again?
Josh.
I'm sorry.
Okay.
Like, I love Celeste.
I love, Celeste is one of the best platformers ever made.
But at the same time, it's one of the worst arts, like pixel arts.
Okay, but like the portraits, like the animated pixel art.
Oh, that part, yes.
Okay.
Okay.
I think that's, I think that's what they're being credited for.
Okay, because I was like, I don't know that I would put that I was the artist of Celeste on my
resume.
I think that's what they're being credited for.
Is that what it is?
Okay.
Well, that changes everything then.
You see these 12 pixels?
I drew these right here.
I don't know that I would put this on my resume that I was the pixel artist for select.
But if you're talking about like the actual like portrait art stuff like, okay, kudos to them.
I'm pretty sure that's what they're going to get so much hate for that, Jeff.
Dude, it's whatever, you know, at this point.
It's true.
Celeste graphics are not what that game is about.
I'm sorry.
it's a fantastic platform.
And then the music from Disaster Piece,
who is a phenomenal composer slash artist.
I'll tell you what,
this is a game that if you said pick a game
that seems like it would not be up Josh's alley,
but yet I am very, very curious about,
it is this game, dude.
Like there is something about the weirdness
and the graphic style of this game
that is drawing me in, boys.
it like speaks to you
you look at it and it's like
I want to know what's going on
this is intriguing
like going from the weird top down
perspective Ryan does not agree
Ryan does not agree
this looks so bad
dude I see I'm in on this game
I hate the style I hate it so much
it's just a weird
I don't know I just
To each the road
Yeah for sure absolutely
It's all subjective
That's why I got my glasses on
so I can actually look at the trailer.
Oh, we're talking about it.
But I just, I, I, I don't know, man.
I, like you said, Ace, to each, to each their own, you know.
And also, you know, you can't say something nice.
Don't say nothing else.
Oddly, I'm in on this one, Ace.
I'm with you.
So.
I think this one looks great.
I think it has a lot of pedigree.
It's got a lot of intrigue.
And the prolog is available right now on Steam to check it out.
I might check it out.
Yeah.
Joshy Trader.
trainer
dude I listen everybody calls me a graphics snob
but you know what this game's art style
you are a graphic snob yes that's true
I didn't argue that I just said everybody calls me
is this true he didn't deny I know
he just likes this game actually has a cool
art style I like how it goes from the weird
like top down 2D they use a color filter
in all these different scenes like one time it's blue
and then another time it's releasing on Game Boy Advance this year
yeah and I get it but then you get it
to like the like you know the crazy like you know girls sitting on a bench and looks like she is a nutcase
and then she's peeking through the peephole and stuff like that and it's like i like this
switching up the style and this artistic and then you put disaster piece and if you listen to the
trailer you're going to hear how the music goes along with the game and then you're like wait
this game's on to something dude like this is a presentation like it's gonna land and i don't
know, man. It's got, it's got me very curious.
What is it with this year and like cozy horror?
Because it's a weird shouldn't work, dude, but I love it.
It's very popular so far.
Yeah. I take these two opposites and smash them together, man.
Because what was it? It was grave seasons, crop, and now Neverway.
Yeah. So it's like, that's, that's already three, three cozy horror games.
That's very interesting. But Neverway is going to release in October.
of this year. What a perfect time for that.
Yeah. And it'll be on PC and Nintendo's Switch.
What?
Nintendo's rejoice.
What?
Yeah. And like I said, the prolog is currently available to play on PC for a limited time.
So if you're interested in this game, I'm like Ryan, check it out.
No, I'll go check it out. Keep these on.
And that is all we have for this showcase.
There were so many games. We didn't get to touch on the showcase.
So I implore you. Go watch.
the full thing.
Check everything out there.
There's so much I want to get to,
but I don't want to rehash the same showcase over and over and over.
But it was beautiful.
And the games we covered today were prove your human,
Alabaster Don,
the Cairn D.L.C. on the trail,
which is free.
Thick as thieves,
machine party,
dead is disco,
don't starve elsewhere,
and finally never weigh.
Guys.
This is a good list of games.
This is a good list of game
And they will all be in the episode
description I'll put them all in there
Wish list them I don't care if they're coming out tomorrow
Wish list the game
You heard me
That means you Ryan go wish list never way right now
