We could not do this without you.
I say it every time now
because it is true.
But your support means everything to us.
I am going to keep the tradition alive.
Don't worry, I'm going to mix it up soon, actually. But I'm going to keep the tradition alive. I'm going to recommend not one, but two
games to you today because they fall into the same series. I've actually mentioned this game
in the past, and that is a series called Everspace. Okay, now you've heard me talk about
both these games just a little bit, but I'm going to go into a little bit more depth on them, and I'm going to tell you why I think you should look into them
and maybe even give them a shot. Okay, so the reason I call this a series is because
Everspace 1 or just Everspace has been out for a while now. That game is a roguelite type game
where you are in space, you're piloting this spaceship. It takes place in this absolutely
gorgeous universe. Honestly, some of the scenery in Everspace is some of the most beautiful I've
come across and some of the coolest stuff. There are shattered planets that you will come across.
There are black holes. There are these nebula gas clouds that you'll fly through. It's just
absolutely stunning. So if you want an example of some of the top end
graphics that are just beautiful in a space game, Everspace has that just down pat.
So what is the basics of the first game? It is space combat, right? That's the majority of it.
There is some flying around and there's some exploring and finding items and stuff like that.
There are some kind of unique out of the way areas and stuff.
But ultimately, this game is about going from one end of the galaxy to the other end of
the galaxy, making it as far as you can.
And each run, when you die, you die and the run resets.
Now you get to keep any credits that you made during that run and you can use those credits
to upgrade your ship. Maybe you get faster shield recharge, energy, where you use energy to fire your weapons. So
maybe you can buy bigger energy reserves and stuff like that. Or you can use three devices
instead of two devices and stuff like that. You get it, right? It's a roguelite. There's
permanent progression there, but it's ultimately
space combat. Now, this is not like Star Wars Squadron space combat, where it's a ton of PVP
dogfighting. This is a single player game. And if you're like me, I got rid of my flight stick
after Squadrons, but this game somehow, some way, they have absolutely mastered how to create a space
combat flight simulator using mouse and keyboard or controller.
They both handle equally well.
But it scratches that itch for me between the roguelite aspects, the absolutely incredible
stunning graphics, the top-notch space combat.
This game, it stood out to me so much so that
they announced that they were making Everspace 2, and I was instantly on board with that because I
liked the first game so much. Now, in regards to the initial Everspace, hey, what are some things
not to like about it? It is a roguelite. It does start to get repetitive. Some runs are going to
go better than others. Sometimes you're going to feel like you've got it just all rocking and rolling,
and then you're going to come across an unlucky situation or a bad situation,
and that's going to end the run. But that's just the nature of the beast there.
It's a lot of fun. Check it out if you're into that sort of thing.
But I had a lot of fun with it, so much so that I'm going to talk about Everspace 2,
but understand that Everspace is what really got my attention there and got me into this series.
Now, what they did with Everspace 2 is they took all of the bones of Everspace, the great space
combat, the upgradable ships, the different types of ships, because there's multiple ones,
right? And they all handle very differently. And they took those bones and they use that to
make an entirely new game out of it. And instead of it being a roguelite, this is now a persistent
open world space RPG. And it sounds amazing and it is amazing. Now, Everspace 2 is still in early
access. They are very actively developing it. They respond to the community on it. They've
taken a lot of feedback. I actually made a post in the Steam forums, and the developer actually
replied to me almost right away. So understand that they are pouring their hearts and souls
into this game. But Everspace two takes that.
They turn it into an open world RPG so that you no longer have that roguelite aspect to
it.
If you die, you have to go back and reload, but they've added just a slew of missions.
They have tons of different, uh, galaxies to explore where there's planets within each
of those galaxies and star bases and stuff
like that. They added planets that you can actually fly down into. I'm a huge fan of that
aspect of it because the first planet I went to was this desert-type planet, and I felt like I
was flying around the surface of Tatooine just blowing up stuff, exploring these old derelict
spaceships. They have cave systems, so you wind up flying
underground in these planets and exploring these caves. The whole time you're fighting off
marauders and alien ships and things like that, and they keep the combat fresh and fun and that
sort of stuff. But there's an economy so that you can try to earn money so that you can buy
permanent upgrades for your ship.
There is a storyline.
I'll be honest, I haven't quite wrapped my head around that yet.
It's kind of the weak point of Everspace 2 so far for me, but I know that they're working
on that part of it as well.
I'm about eight hours into Everspace 2.
I'm absolutely loving it.
There's not much that I could say
is wrong with it, especially for a game that's in early access right now. If you are a fan of
space combat, if you like RPGs, if you like just that sci-fi, I want to be in outer space,
dogfighting things and exploring planets and upgrading my ship and that kind of stuff, then this game is right up your
alley. There's really, like I said, not much that I have found that I don't like about it yet.
Okay. So pros and cons. The first game, like I said, Roguelite, that's a con to some people.
Graphics, gameplay, controls, all that stuff are all pros and they carry over into Everspace 2. I'm really loving the size and scope of Everspace 2 because for an RPG, it does feel like an RPG
and the world feels very big. You go on these quests and missions and you come across people
and these cool upgrades and stuff like that. I have heard that there's even engagements against
capital ships. I haven't come across those,
but I'm pretty sure they're in the game and who doesn't love fighting some big,
you know, star destroyer type ship as a little fighter. Um, but, uh, yeah, so check them out.
Uh, I, you know, cons for Everspace too. I honestly haven't come across any, maybe that it's just not a full release at this point. And the other con is that it is a little bit pricey. It retails for $39.99, but it's almost a AAA game. So if you've got 40 bucks to spend and this is up your alley,
I think you're going to get your money's worth out of it at that point. But more so than anything,
just take a look into these games. Like I said, a lot of people have heard the name or maybe they've
never even heard of it, but they're worth looking into. I love the developer
for these games. They are very interactive and they're just, like I said, they're pouring their
heart and soul into these games and I think they're well worth checking out. I have had a
lot of fun with them, but it's just weird because most people that I've talked to, everybody's like
Everspace. Did you mean like EverQuest or what are you talking about? And then I have to explain it
all again. So that's why I'm bringing it up to you.
Check out some gameplay videos. If you wind up picking it up, let me know. If you're just like,
hey, Josh, these games suck. Let me know. Everybody's a little bit different. Paul would hate this game. Actually, Paul would probably love this game. He does like space games.
So maybe we can talk him into picking it up too. All right. That is it for this Gaming Quick
Takes episode. Check them out, Everspace and Everspace 2. Let me know your thoughts on it. And I hope,
I hope you enjoy it and I will see you guys and gals next time. Bye-bye.
