Walkabout The World - A Disney Podcast - A Walkabout Afternoon In Harambe [ep 033]
Episode Date: October 24, 2021Hello Travelers! Join us this week for a very low-key stroll through the village of Harambe in Disney's Animal Kingdom. We start off listening to live music which is once again in Harambe! Hear the mu...sician play the African harp (kora) as he interacts with the guests. We then take a walk through the village, hunting down some of the excellent signage, and ending up in the Harambe Market where we hear the Wildlife Express train as it travels by us. NOTES: - The kora instrument you heard: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kora_(instrument) - My wife Heather was with me as we recorded this, and she is in a wheelchair in the parks, and so I often gave the microphone to hear as we traveled around, and leaned in for some comments, some of which are a little muted because I didn't lean in far enough. This is how we do things here, and we had fun. Look us up at @WalkaboutWDW on Instagram and drop us a note to say hi! Find our producer Josh also on Instagram at @TheSteele.

Ali Ali, can you hear me?
Can you play Ali? Hi, can you hear me? Mali adika, mali adika, mali adika, mali adika, mali adika, mali adika. In the far distance, the beating drums of a flotilla behind us. Just taking a second to appreciate the architecture of this area.
One of the very few places in any of the parks where you feel like you are somewhere else.
Thank you.
Thank you. Music Music directly across from Tusker House
in the Dava Bar right now.
In the distance, the Hotel Buradika.
Here's to hoping we'll see Buradika back in Harambee the band I'm going to go to the right corner. The gentleman just walks up to me, like six inches away from me, pauses, looks at the microphone, looks at me, walks away.
I don't know.
This is my kind of walk about the world. If you're just finding us, this is what we do.
My name is Jeremy, by the way.
Weekly, we take a stroll around the parks, and mostly that's what we do.
We stroll, we listen, we stop.
Occasionally, we take in an attraction.
You'll see them in the feed.
But often it's this.
This is what we're about.
Where else can you go and get this?
I don't mean the podcast. I mean the parks. Terima kasih telah menonton! Welcome! Thank you. A sense of change-up.
I'm going to hand you to our on-site showrunner, Heather.
We're going to take a little stroll. Here we go.
Pardon the noise. Happy Monday! Thank you.
Thank you. Kampung Kampung Standing next to the Mombasa Marketplace.
PO Box 139, Harambe.
We have Lion King novelties and such, it says.
Gifts, character, curio, have a look.
And this is also the...
Let's take a look here.
The...
Man, I can't pronounce that one.
Marburua House, built 1781, restored...
No, 1992. directly to our right
a cool little area where they're selling
African beadwork
and African carving
oh man this is some
great stuff and
the carver's back on site, guys.
For a long time this didn't exist.
But the gentleman is on site carving these cool figures.
This is great. We'll take a picture of it for you.
The fans are running.
He's currently carving an amazing lion.
Basswood, he says.
Very cool. Very cool, very cool Giraffes, elephants, lions
I see a water buffalo
All kinds of cool stuff
Looks gorgeous
One of these may have to come home
Alright, we're going to go to our left
Past the Harambe Fruit Market
Have we talked about that before?
Right across the way.
Showrunner, you're going to have to help me here with the navigation.
Yeah, Harambe Fruit Market.
Tasty, fresh, delicious.
We're going to see what they have.
Says Jombo, welcome to Harambee Fruit Market. They have hot dogs, Mickey pretzels, churros, grilled corn on the cob, mini Babybel snack cheese, cuties, mandarins, assorted fruit cups, whole fruit.
Somebody just dropped an entire fruit thing and assorted chips
says welcome please enjoy some of our delicious fresh fruit hungry hakuna matata
so if you want a hot dog and a bud light which i do not want this is where you can get it okay Okay, I'm going to hand you off to the showrunner once again. Here we go. You can't go that way. You guys hear me from back here.
Maybe you can.
We are next to an amazing looking authentic phone pole.
Is that a telephone pole?
I think so, yes. Is it a phone pole?
It's some kind of pole with lots of wires.
We're going to take the corner and go over here to Zewani Traders.
Zewani Traders.
See, I'm backing away.
Oops, we had our wild animal just now.
Now you know it's a shovel. Looks amazing.
Thank you.
So glad to have you back.
Yeah, yeah.
Thank you. I remember.
This is Zawani Traders.
PO Box 187, if you are interested.
Has a fax number I can get for you.
Says, for the best and finest, factory is on Ciccone Road Industrial Area.
Not made here, but sold here.
Welcome, it says. Come inside to see the Lion King. What is this, Heather?
This is Zuri's Sweet Shop.
You're going to hear, you're not're not gonna see anything it's a podcast you're gonna hear a lot of microphone handing off today ignore that pretend like we're professionals even though
we're not i wanted to do some sign hunting today i'm gonna take a picture of some of these too
some of these we've read before because that's what we do. We read signs in Harambe and Asia. We, of course, have Joe Rohde masks
and beads. We know
the actual store
is over near,
closer to Club 33, around the corner.
But we also have a sign
here, Haraka
Technologica.
Electronic shop. DVD, mobile
video,
cassette recorders, box speakers, and irons.
Interestingly enough.
What do we have over here?
The planting. It's just incredible.
The way that they work the planting in and around the buildings.
This says, care for a unique cold beverage?
Yes, actually, I do.
Flavors?
Many, it says.
Mixing? Fun.
There's also another flat to let here.
Contact 50289.
Now we're turning the corner.
We can see the Harambee Market.
And right here, you can get
school uniforms kids wear,
school bags, shoes, socks,
Old Square East.
This is Infulika Fashions.
All right, handing you off.
We're going to go over here.
Across the way is the Ficquois fellow.
Hidden, I think, what Ficquois means.
Hidden Mickey, but he's not.
Here we go.
Incidentally, one of my favorite park ambient tracks ever this is called Yo Lele And I said, you're a bicycle man.
We're standing next to the door to bicycle land. It's closed for shop workers only.
Here is the area that has the amazing bicycles up against the crackling stone wall and it says
it does not matter who you are or where you are from, we are all children of the world.
We'll take a photo of that, I'm sure you've seen it.
I'm leaning over here to speak.
Is that annoying you?
No.
No.
Is it annoying you, listener?
You can't say.
We're going to take a stroll through the Harambe market
and back towards where the train comes by. Sign says need rubber stamp.
I mean, who doesn't, right?
504 17
oh wait guys it says disco disco. With one love concerts presented by three stars at Civic Club.
Who doesn't love a good disco? In the heart of Harambee Market now. Quiet back here and to the left you can see the railroad tracks where the train goes by to Rafiki's Planet Watch the conservation station maybe we shall see
one go past
we're going to take a brief wait here
I'm going to move a chair, hang on
here comes the ever-present cart
you also know it's a show
the stores over here
we have Wanjohe
Wanjohe refreshment
we have
famous sausages.
Why not? And Chef Mwanga's meat shop right next to us.
Menu including dreamy ribs, beverages, children's items, and
cold beer. Spice-rubbed carubi ribs
is also available. And so back here in the market, it has a lot of like tin-roofed structures that you can eat under.
It's shady. They have lots of fans running.
You are most beautiful, the sign says.
Thank you.
Well, Heather is.
We also have lamination and photocopy typing.
I don't know what photocopy typing means, but maybe copying?
That's available over there around the corner.
There's a sign for an auto driving school.
And then right in front of us is a tattered, you know, in appearance,
tattered chain link fence with the railroad tracks and a broken down Jeep of some sort across the way.
And we're just going to chill here and see if we can catch the train coming by.
Here we go. Norske Ropsten And there you go.
At the back of Harambee Market, you can see the wildlife express go by and it was packed i'm kind of surprised that the park is low today the wait times even for
like flight of passage is like 50 minutes to have that many people out there at the
affection section surprises me okay we're going to take off.
Are you ready?
Yes, I'm ready.
There's our announcement in the distance. Right Right across from Harambee Market, the Malamwingu Guesthouse of Harambee. The Behind three potted plants here, there's just a little sign tacked to the wall. It's a little wooden sign that says Whispers Garden.
Quietness brings blessings.
I'm on board with that. There's a little wooden sign that says Whispers Garden. Quietness brings blessings.
I'm on to go ahead and get my bag. We have some amateur drummers across the way. I love that one Indeed
The amateur drummers are active.
Ah.
Well, I hope you guys had a good time tagging along.
We are on the outskirts of Harambee now.
That sounds like we are entering it because of the drumbeats.
But we are just past the Harambee Marketplace next to a lovely crumbling stone wall
and a multi-colored faded painted wooden bench.
And it's relaxing.
Painted on the wall across the way says,
to get lost is to learn the way.
Through the foliage in the distance is the tree of life.
And with that,
I think we're going to bring this expedition to a close.
Heather, thanks for handling microphone duties today.
You're welcome.
And guys, thanks for supporting us, listening to us.
Pour a little screaming, little one.
That's two for this episode.
Appreciate you guys hanging out, going on Walkabout with us.
Remember to look us up on Instagram at walkaboutwdw.
That's where we interact with you guys.
Drop us a note.
Send us a message.
We always interact.
Really appreciate it.
Thank you for the responses, by the way, to the last episode, the ending of the last episode.
Thank you for those who reached out.
Thank you for the kind messages.
It really does matter.
Anxiety is a journey that I didn't expect would be this long of a journey, frankly.
And hearing some comforting thoughts and some similar thoughts from others has really helped.
It's really encouraging.
And I thank you.
So with that, remember, there is a great, great big beautiful tomorrow and a lot of drumming. We will see you with less drumming but in one of those tomorrows on another Walk About the World. Bye everybody. Bye everybody.
