All right, welcome back everybody to another edition of Walk About the World.
I am your co-host today, Pete, aka Neverland Local, and I am with a special guest.
Well, he's not so special, but a special guest.
Not special.
Well, in your own mind, and maybe to your mom, but who am I with today?
It's me, Josh.
It's producer Josh Steele with an E.
And we are today, well, where are we today, Josh?
We are at Disney's Animal Kingdom.
Disney's Animal Kingdom.
And one of the reasons that we're here today is we wanted to be here to celebrate, reminisce, whatever you'd want to say,
about the opening of Disney's Animal Kingdom that took place on April 22, 1998.
Is that correct?
Correct.
So this would be the 26th year anniversary.
And we want to just do a walkabout of the park and see what we can hear
and see where it goes from there.
So hopefully you will join us,
and away we go.
Walking into the oasis.
Yes, we are.
Yes, we are. What are we hoping to see in the oasis. Yes, we are. Yes, we are.
What are we hoping to see in the oasis?
So, I always hope to see the giant anteater over on the left side, the left pathway.
Well, let's go and see if we can see the giant anteater.
He's usually there, but I'd like to see him active for once.
Walking around or doing something?
Not playing dead?
Right.
Okay, well, this is the first part of his enclosure, I believe.
So I've seen him over there before.
He's not over there.
His normal place to sleep is over here.
A gorilla.
A gorilla.
You don't have to.
Hmm.
Doesn't seem to be out currently The southern giant anteater
Well
Maybe we can come back
Later and see if he is around
And being active
We'll see, he seems to be pretty elusive
Stay tuned
Is there anything in particular Other than the giant anteater Exelucid. Stay tuned.
Is there anything in particular other than the giant anteater that you would like to see today?
I think it would be cool for us to kind of do a deep dive into some opening day.
Dinoland would be good, considering that its time is limited. It's going to be extinct soon. Sunsetting. Yes, so let's take a walk over to Dinoland. But first, enjoy the Tree The Tree of Life.
I can't see you, Pete.
Oh, man.
There's no video attached to this?
We're walking towards the Tree of Life in all of its glory. It's probably a good thing they can't see us in your dance moves.
Just saying. Now, would you agree or disagree that animal kingdom has a different vibe in the
morning and in the afternoon and the evening? Ah, yeah. Absolutely.
I think in the morning it's a lot more active,
and I think also the sounds I feel are...
I don't know if it's purposefully that way,
if it feels louder, if it just sounds louder,
or if it's actually louder,
because it feels like all the ambient noises and music is very much more
noticeable in the morning. There's Russell. Hey Russell, how are you?
But yes, I agree with you. I feel like it's louder. I feel like when you leave the park,
the volume of the music is lower, but now I feel like it's like loud and maybe that's like to get people
excited about the day and energize them but even if that's not the case that's what we're going to
believe that it does it for me yeah for sure plus everyone has a lot of energy right now that's why
i'm dancing pete stop making fun of me and when you get to the end of the day, everyone's just like, where's my car?
Where's the bus?
Disney wasted.
Disney wasted.
So we have meat and greed with not Pocahontas, Moana.
It used to be Pocahontas.
Have you ever met Moana?
I've not.
It's impressive. Have you ever met Moana? I have not. Dino Land.
We're going underneath the arch of Dino Land.
Crossing the bridge.
Trilobites?
Or is it Trilobites?
Trilobites. Trilobites? Trilobites? I say Trilobites? Trilobites.
Trilobites?
Trilobites?
I say Trilobites.
Okay.
It's probably not going to matter here soon.
We're taking suggestions on what we think Trilobites will turn into
once this land is reimagined.
Josh, if you had to guess what they could change this name to,
I implored our guests to come up with names for that particular place,
knowing that it's small bites, it's going to be in a different section.
What do you think? Do you have any ideas?
Not yet. I'll have to think about it.
But I hope it would be something funny.
I'm sure it will be.
I'm going to stop here because
what I think I would like to do, Pete,
is to do a deep dive
and let's look at all the details.
Sounds good. Because there's so
much that, you know,
Dino Land gets a bad rap.
Sure does. I don't know if you know this.
Well, the fact that they're sunsetting it, probably.
Yes, so welcome to Dinoland USA, the friendliest fossils in America.
I love that sign.
That sign looks like a national park sign.
It's meant to give you the feeling of this whole idea that this isn't
just a
land
it's a park
it's a
roadside attraction
it's not just like a little tiny section
in a big park
it's supposed to seem like it's actually like a big
a big thing
a big barter, like you said
a roadside attraction with Chester and Hester's and excavation and all these things.
Yes, so underneath the bridge into, well, underneath the fossils, there is the Olden Gate Bridge.
This fossil gateway is composed of the giant bones of a brachiosaurus, one of the largest creatures that ever walked the earth.
It stands 52 feet tall and more than 80 feet long.
A peaceful plant eater, the brachiosaurus' enormous neck allowed it to browse
amid the upper branches of prehistoric
forests. This replica
fossil is cast from the bones discovered
in Colorado in 1900.
The original is now in the Field Museum
in Chicago. Hey!
In Chicago!
To get a closer look at the astounding giant,
visit the Boneyard, our working
dinosaur dig site.
I wonder if that was intentional?
Like they spelled peaceful with two L's?
With two L's?
That's what it looks like.
You want to snap a photo?
Do you want to snap a photo of that?
Yeah, I got one.
Okay, well there you go.
So now that we have passed underneath the brachiosaurus which during christmas time they put lights on it and possibly a donald hat on top of it
which is always great so to our left is the boneyard the fossil fun site where you know
kids can go down all the slides and all the it's a great place to tire your kid out
basically
and then behind us
is the dig site
basically a gigantic sandbox
I can honestly say
that I have been down many a slide in there
chose some
in particular because I felt like i was going to get
stuck so but definitely entertaining for sure so in when in dinoland look at the signage there's so
much wonderful wonderful signage in dinoland and a lot of them you know are puns and a lot of them
are um you know it's just a lot of fun it's a lot of fun. It's got a really
fun feel to all of them.
This is the Vacation Club
kiosk.
Mammoth Vacation Values.
With a woolly mammoth.
And then it's Gargantua
Saurus World Tours. Visit all of
our fabulous sites.
There's a sign on the side
that looks like where Chester and Hester's is.
It says, there's nothing prehistoric about our accommodations, which is great.
Which is great.
Like, what a great little sign.
But again, there are things that unless you're paying attention, you don't see.
Then next to that, we have uh pterodon for tots and
aptines most most things uh spelled with a p uh gifts of extinction and then uh
sign that says follow me to dino land usa this is a good one this is a good one too
it says picture yourself as a dinosaur if you are already a dinosaur we'll draw you as a human
so just look looking around here and seeing all the signs it's just great to be able to take a look
and the big fossil has a pencil in his hand
in the dino hand
and the feet as well
it's great
it is really great
but again, it's the things we always talk about
especially at Disney is to stop and take a look whether it's up, down, around, there's the things, you know, we always talk about it, especially at Disney, is to stop and take a look, whether it's up, down, around.
There's so much to see.
What do you think the percentage of people that come to theme parks that are, like, nerds like us,
that really appreciate this kind of stuff, versus the general theme park goer that just kind of takes it in for what it is?
They don't really know about it.
Exactly.
But you have to understand it from their point of view.
They have six days, and they have to do four parks, and they have to get it all done. Go don't really know about it. Exactly, but you have to understand it from their point of view. They have six days
and they have to do four parks
so they have to get it all done.
They don't have enough time to
lounge around and be like,
hey, let me go look at the Asian brown tortoise
and the
abdomen storks
and things like that.
You don't have that time
but we definitely do.
There he is.
Oh, he's in the nest.
Ooh, two of them.
And there's the tortoise in the back.
Storks do look like dinosaurs, though, don't they?
They do.
That's cool.
That's awesome.
Wow.
Ooh, there's three of them.
Cool.
A trifecta of abdomens.
See, even the choice of animals and plants for this land,
that's the kind of stuff that, that's that Jorodi detail.
Yes, it's not done by accident.
There's no accidents.
They're not just throwing animals in here.
I mean, those birds look like prehistoric birds.
They do. Agreed.
And that's the whole Dino Bash, Donald's Dino Bash theme, you know,
is that it's the birds' ancestors and celebrating that idea.
It's really cool.
Exactly.
Where are we standing in front of now well we are in front of
restaurant asaurus uh home of the impossible burger and uh this is another place well we've
talked about uh you know this whole time here in dinoland that you know nothing is on accident
everything has a you know a purpose and uh in here it is just another this would be considered
like a diner as part
of the roadside attraction
I believe
it's run by the interns
run by the interns yes
so you have the pterodactyl terrace
and the chairs up
on the roof
the dino institute
interns
yes I love this restaurant up on the roof. The Dino Institute interns.
Yes.
Yes.
I love this restaurant.
It's the the weather vane.
Weather vane.
We got a dinosaur up there.
We got their laundry.
There's little dinosaurs
all over.
We got the
the chairs up on the roof.
We got the
basketball hoop and the roof. We've got the basketball hoop.
And the ball.
Got the Airstream.
IR Smart.
The International Osiris, it says.
And IR Smart.
$152.44, Josh. Any idea? Any idea? it says. And I are smart.
15244.
Josh, any idea?
Any idea?
Maybe an Imagineer's birthday?
Huh.
Like we've always said, there's nothing on accident here. Everything has a purpose.
Research. Research.
Research!
Restaurant Osaurus.
And actually, everything that you see
in this area has Osaurus
after it. Like the heat
Osaurus, the big water tower.
Have you heard me?
Have I heard what?
At the first word.
Uh-oh.
There's the word right here, right now, in Dino Land USA.
That's great.
That's great. Probably not a huge line for Dinosaur right now.
Yeah, let's go to Dinosaur.
For sure.
And I will be humming Indiana Jones while we are right now. We'll go right down there. Yeah, let's go to Dinosaur. For sure. And I will be humming
Indiana Jones
while we are right now.
Will you?
I hope you will.
So I was thinking about
when this does eventually
become Indiana Jones
and the queue for the
Indy ride at Disneyland and in Tokyo is just as impressive as the ride itself.
So I'm wondering if they're going to expand and use all the Cretaceous Trail stuff that's
part of the queue, maybe?
You're talking about the outside stuff?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But maybe it'll be inside?
I don't know.
I don't know.
Enclose it. Enclose it. Somebody had asked me about space over here and i was like well they have more
because they have the trail exactly because they just don't utilize it when it's unless it's really
busy for sure so that'll be interesting to see oh yeah because most of this you don't even see
right unless it's like really really busy day so so as we approach you have aladar
dinosaur and i mean looking at it it does look like it's a museum like it looks like what we
think it would be an institute i love that and you don't really you don't think about that there's
a giant show building behind it correct i see it now because i don't really, you don't think about that there's a giant show building behind it. Correct. You kind of see it now
because I don't think they've really been taken care of.
But, you know, just because the trees,
the tree line on the hill, that makes it look
like it's farther away. For sure.
I love it. Five minute
wait. Let's go, Pete. Let's go.
Morning. Welcome.
I do enjoy this queue. Even though there are some times where it gets busy and you have to wait in line,
but it's entertaining. There's a lot to look at, a lot to hear. Nini Thank you. I love all the murals in the rotunda here.
Like I said, there's no shortage of things to see, for sure.
Especially this big Carnotaurus in the middle of the room.
Something tells me we may see him again.
Definitely not our day yeah the murals kind of tell you the periods Wow! You're so nice! Thank you!
So cute!
Wow!
We're gonna get to watch this!
I was just one!
What do you think of Rick and Morty?
65 million years ago!
Wow! There it is!
As you can see, it's a war of all this trouble!
And tilling with life.
Fish fill the seas, and new creatures such as insects, birds, and small mammals are beginning to exist.
Forever.
This is the Age of the Dinosaurs!
Several hundred titans, and they have this incredible world right here.
Ah, yeah. a public world.
Whoa! A second, definitely small meteor shower
is a gift from Europe
to create an explosion of fire.
The United States, with a price
more powerful than the spin of a
five-speed train, is landing at the sea.
It's 60,000 miles an hour.
It creates a massive cool wind and stirs up storm.
It's a huge dust cloud.
It's gone out of the sun for three months.
It's toxic gas.
It's acid rain.
Nothing gets along with that. Science and technology
The Dino Institute has created
The Tide Rover
An amazing vehicle
That will literally transport you
To the age of the dinosaurs.
Our Vax provider.
But the result is a breathtaking journey through a prehistoric world
that will witness the most spectacular creatures to ever walk the earth.
In a moment, you'll be going live to our control center for comprehensive safety briefing.
And then it's on to the tour that will convince you forever that the future is truly in the past.
Hello there.
Welcome to our little trans-dimensional joyride, folks.
I'm Dr. Seeker, your friendly controller, and a heck of a paleontologist, if I do say
so myself. But let's not
talk about me. Let's talk about you
and how you can help me make history today
with the time rover. It's like
this. If I can bring you
back from the Cretaceous period, it stands
to reason that I can bring back a live dinosaur
with you. And not just any dinosaur.
Take a look at this guy.
He's a guanodon, and I'm certain
that he is the key to understanding
these magnificent creatures.
I tagged him with a locator during
an unauthorized field trip.
Otherwise, I'd be traveling with you.
Right now, our dino
should be about here, at the very
end of the Cretaceous period.
That's where you're going today.
I've arrived, it seems, just in time
to correct a little misstatement.
Dr. Marsh.
It's impossible to approach to the giant asteroid impact that destroyed most life forms on Earth.
Our tools are designed to take you to the early Cretaceous period.
And I can assure you that all time lovers have been securely locked on those forms.
That's right. See?
Securely locked. those boards. That's right. See? Securely locked. Access
denied.
Continue.
Of course.
We were just talking about seat
guns. Plug them in.
Use them. It can get kind of
choppy out there, so keep your hands
and arms aside the vehicle at all times.
Flash photography? I wouldn't. It alters the homing signal and that's not good
and one more thing those lots of coordinates we're in now here's the
trigger you follow the homing signal to the
iguana node then I'll enlarge the transport field and boom you're back
with one additional passenger extra large and don't worry about that asteroid.
He'll be out of there before he breaks the atmosphere.
Trust me. What's going on?
Go off.
Hey, it's me again.
Remember, only you guys are going on this special mission.
So don't tell anyone, okay?
I love that the gift shop even feels like a museum gift shop.
Agreed. Agreed.
Everyone that I've ever been in, that's what it seems like.
What did you think? How was that ride?
Did we catch that dino?
We did. We got him.
Last minute. It was close.
Size XLR.
We almost didn't make it.
We almost didn't make it.
Yes.
And we come to probably one of the best parts of the whole area.
Dinoland, Donald's Dinobashland.
It is Chester and Hester's.
It is the true roadside attraction gift shop.
You could spend hours in here looking at all the stuff.
Signs and dinosaurs and just absolutely everything.
Probably one of my favorite gift shops, to be honest. Dines and dinosaurs and just absolutely everything.
Probably one of my favorite gift shops, to be honest.
Prehistorically low prices.
The old Smilodon.
There he is.
Says, have a nice day.
This way to the prehistoric.
I mean, the puns are never-ending. All right.
Windows with the little brachiosaurus coming out of the window eating the plants.
It is truly great.
Come on, enjoy our Ice Age air conditioning.
Inset decoration.
I mean, they went all out in here.
I like all of the murals on the walls that are dinosaurs made out of, like, random things.
So there's one right there with a
foldable yardstick.
There's one made out of
a gas pump.
And then just
all the posters.
There's a manatee.
What are you doing in here?
And Jeremy, yes, the train is operational currently
doesn't have a locomotive for some reason
but it is operational I'm going to find all the Godzillas.
There's two right there.
Good old Chester and Hester
in the flesh.
Well, in the frame, anyway.
In the frame.
In flesh, in the frame.
If people want to see that,
they've got to look.
Well, if you were to walk inside
Chester and Hester's
gift shop,
walk right in,
come to the right, and kind of make almost
like a U-turn. There's a tiny little
shrine to Chester and Hester with
a picture on the wall
and their first dollar bill. Or if you're
coming from the ride, from that side,
from the back, you just keep going towards the front
and it's right before you get to the
doors on the left.
There they are.
Yeah, it's true.
The theming is great.
Did you ever see the Batman comic?
Spider-Man?
No, Batman.
I know where the Spider-Man comic is. Oh, right next to the Spider-Man.
The Spider-Man's right there.
So if you're coming from the ride...
They're all themed.
The dinosaurs.
Yes, correct.
Batman and the dinosaurs.
So if you're coming from the ride,
you come inside
just here above the
Nuemos, we have a Batman
and the Amazing Spider-Man
on the wall.
Both of which
have tried to be hidden.
Godzilla. I honestly think one of the other things in here
so you have the big dinosaur when you walk in
but I think the thing that people see too is this marionette mickey kind of just there but again it's like
tying it in like you know you don't lose that you're at a disney park no not at all obviously
you're in a gift shop but but it also fits in because, like, you know, I've been to roadside attractions off of 95 or off of, you know,
like Route 66 and everything, and you'll see that kind of stuff.
It's just like random Mickey Mouse.
So it fits.
I love it.
Agreed.
Perfect.
Great little hat, too.
Sure is.
Sure is. All right. let's move on moving on
now here on the pin truck are some extinct pins which are currently not
showing but you can see pins older pins they're not selling anymore but they have
record of them here and they're really cool to look at when it's available it's currently unavailable
what kind of gasoline are they theming here i don't know okay fossil fuel yeah
sinclair oh okay because their mascot is a dinosaur oh it's a dinosaur
I was looking at that one
dino power
it is
awesome
so right in front of us
here we have
what we like to call
dino dumbo
and then the large
dino-rama
sign that we will walk under.
We're erupting with gifts.
So as you walk under the sign to Dino-land, or Dino-rama, I should say,
on both sides of the sign,
there's a photo op of you to take a photo with an ode to the hitchhiking ghosts but in dinosaur form.
So we have one on the right and one on the left.
And as we continue into Dino-rama, on the right here is the former location of one of my favorite rides,
Primeval Whirl.
Primeval Whirl went extinct a few years ago, and it's unfortunate because it was a great ride. They didn't knock you around a bunch, but it was truly a great ride. And on the left-hand side here, we have triceratops spin,
or like we lovingly call it, dino dumbo.
Dino.
So just some of those signs as we're walking through here.
We're erupting with gifts, prehistoric prices, mammoth deals.
There's that mammoth again.
The saddest one of all.
Going out of existence sale.
Everything must go.
It's a true-to-form sign.
At one point we knew it was going to be true true and now it's probably more truer than ever. The dinosaurs say goodbye and by is spelled
B-U-Y. It's a goodbye. But as we walk along this area, restrooms on our right, old primeval
world on our left, we have the digs county usa sign 498
which represents april 1998 when they first opened and then there's a big sign of when
visiting digs county see the dino institute so where we just were and it has the aladar and
you know but if you want some real fun visit chester and hester's dino rama rides games
laughs um very cool sign for sure yeah it literally echoes the the theming adventure into the past in
dinosaur discover sue the world famous tyrannosaurus rex enjoy the boneyard playground explore the
cretaceous trail all the things welcome to digs county where fossils
are the way of life now in that photo or in that mural we see kind of everything that we've you
know that we have here in in dino land including look at that is that indiana jones no not kind of
looks like indiana jones it's a mix between Alan Grant and Indiana Jones.
But yeah, that hat.
I mean, I've always thought, hmm, hmm.
But look.
Do you see it?
What do I see?
Look right next to, well, next to Cementosaurus.
Yes.
What is that?
Primeval Royal?
Yeah.
Yeah, exactly.
Still exists in the billboard.
One of my favorites.
I like that ride.
And Cementosaurus is still orange in that picture, too.
He is.
And honestly, I don't remember him being orange.
He's like a yellowish orange.
Or even yellowish orange.
I just remember him being green.
Chester and Hester's Dino-Rama parking lot.
50 cents is crossed out, and it says $2.
Because I'm pretty sure once the Dino Institute moved in, they upped their prices.
Upped the price.
Because now people are coming to it.
Yes.
The theming in this land is amazing.
Like, every square inch is themed, which is awesome.
They got into the asphalt.
Yeah, the road.
Did you point those out over here?
I did not. I didn't.
Are you talking about the Hidden Mickey?
Or the Hidden Butterfly?
I didn't.
So between the Welcome Center
for Genesee's Dino Bash and the World's Largest
Pintruck,
there are
a couple of hidden objects
in the ground, in the cracks in the ground,
one being a hidden Mickey, and one being a hidden butterfly. So as we continue in the
dino-rama, then we get to the games section, kind of a carnival-type atmosphere with games, whether it's a basketball shot,
it's a wackasaurus or a wackadino, I think maybe it's called.
Dinowama, shop till you're dizzy,
the dinosaur with all the gifts.
And then I think the feats of strength thing here,
it's hidden, so a lot of people don't see it,
but a dinosaur flexing.
And you could be a wimposaurus.
You could be a bicep-terraptor.
You can be a brontosaurus, a buffadon, a tyrannosaurus flex,
and a triceps atops, which is great.
I mean, those are all great ones.
Oh my goodness, look who won again.
Number 13.
Great job.
Anything else that we want to do over here? Oh, really?
We got fossil fuel error, we got
mammoth marathon,
and then comet
crasher. And one of us did win a prize here
at Comet Crasher
and I believe there will be a photo of that in the notes
but yeah
so Dino Land is great
obviously
we definitely like to see
change or like to see new stuff
this one is going to be
tough I think for a lot of people
because they do enjoy it
I think once you walk around the land
and see everything there is to see
you really enjoy it
but yes we're excited for the future
we're excited for what's to come
whenever that would be
it is what it is what do you think Josh? come whenever that would be. And, you know,
it is what it is.
What do you think, Josh? I'm ready.
I mean, I've always loved Dinoland,
but I've also always
loved Indiana Jones.
And so I think it'll be
an interesting change. I really
do hope that Joe Rohde has
something to do with the changes at this park.
I feel like they need
him. You know, this is his baby
and making major
changes to his baby, I feel like
he should be involved. So that's why kind of
with him being involved right now
and coming back for a guest spot
or whatever, I kind of hope that maybe
this had something to do with it, but
hard to say because they're going to keep their secrets to me.
Yes, for sure.
But I'm ready. I'm excited.
Well, I mean,
I think that just about does it
for us here at Dino Land today.
It was great.
Let's go take our picture in the funhouse.
Alright, sounds good.
Well, that about does it
for our episode of Walkabout
here at Dinoland.
And as always, we'd like to give a special shout-out to people at our Beautiful Tomorrow level.
And that would be Beck Castle, Bill and Aaron Zeese, Byron E. Grant,
Derek at Satisfactual Sign Company, John Hamilton, Meredith Izzo,
Hannah Ginn, David Noss, Jessica Davis, Lindsay O'Connell, Courtney Otter, Kara Louisa Moody, Laura B., and Randall Lynch. We would also like to give a shout out to people at the newest living laboratory level.
That would be Debbie Gambala, Eric Steinhauer, Josh Nakano, and James Bocan.
Thank you again for following along.
We really enjoy doing these podcast episodes for you.
And Josh, any parting words?
Have a great big beautiful tomorrow.
We'll see you real soon.
Sounds good. Take care. All right, we're back to check out and see the anteater.
Josh, did we see it?
He came out.
What do you think?
Yay, he lives.
There he is.
Oh, he's so cool.
Look at how cool he is.
He looks like a Muppet.
He does look like a Muppet.
All right, I'll make sure we have pictures for evidence.
Southern giant anteater.
Yeah, usually he's in one little spot.
I'm so happy right now.
That's great.
He's here.
There's a big crowd around here taking photos of him.
Also, a duck.
Look, Michelle, there's a duck.
There's a duck.
We're all ooh and ah.
If Michelle was here, she'd be like, ducky.
Here he's coming back.
It's like he's doing laps.
It's a southern giant anteater.
It's a southern giant ant eater.
Oh, the ant eaters?
Yeah.
All right, let's go.
All right, well, that was great.
