Hello, travelers.
Welcome back to Walk About the World. Hello, travelers.
Welcome back to Walk About the World.
Weekly audio stroll through the parks and resorts of Walt Disney World here in Orlando, Florida,
and Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California.
Today we're back in Animal Kingdom. It is hot, it is humid as it should be, and it feels like a vacation in Orlando, Florida at the parks today. And strangely I'm
here for that. Not quite ready for the heat, but today it just feels right somehow.
So where are we?
We are right next to the flagpole.
We haven't went through the tap styles yet, and I thought I would just take you with me the whole way.
We'll go through the tap styles together.
We'll walk up through the oasis.
And then today's
goal is very simple. I want to do two things because I've thought about this all week.
First, I'm going to walk across the bridge to Anandapur to the drink wallet and procure a
frozen coke because that sounds wonderful. And then we're going to turn left head towards Harambee and we are
going to do absolutely nothing but wallow I'm not sure I'm not sure you can
wallow in the ambience but we're gonna try we're going to wallow in the
ambience of Harambee market so if you are, and I'm going to assume you are, let's go.
Directly ahead of us is Disney's Animal Kingdom sign
which has a dragon, an elephant, and a triceratops
animals past present and imaginary Pardon the mic noise here for a second.
There. Hopefully that wasn't too bad.
Alright, let's hit the tap styles.
Oh, I love this track, by the way. Hello.
Hi.
All right, baby.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
Thank you.
And we're in.
And I'm going to pause right here here's a story that no one cares about
but way back
in the
I would say 2006-2007
era
I came across an online radio station. What was it called? Oh wait, I know. It was
called Subsonic Radio. Also, I think I've gotten you guys too close. I'm going to adjust
you again. Sorry. Yeah, that sounds a little better, I think.
But it was called Subsonic Radio, and they played loads of amazing Disney tracks.
I fell in love with it.
We had come to Disney for the first time as adults in 2000.
And Magic Kingdom, no, we're at Animal Kingdom. Animal Kingdom had just opened in, what, 98,
I believe, and I fell in love with, oh man, I'm sorry, the Oasis is beautiful and calm,
but I fell in love with Animal Kingdom, and anything that would evoke that was a happy place for me. And Subsonic Radio played loads of wonderful
Animal Kingdom tracks. That one in particular is called I Already Have
a Husband, and it's a song played on, I believe
it's called a marimba. I hear a flotilla of drummers.
Can you guys hear that in the distance?
We're about three quarters of the way up through the oasis.
I'm going to turn left over here.
Over here by the rhinoceros iguana enclosure.
Oh, he's out.
Let me take a photo of him for you absolute beauty what a beautiful animal I'm sorry that was not good but my Steve
Irwin comes out when I see
horrifically ugly creatures.
So here we are.
One of the most lovely little areas that you can visit before you even get into the park.
You can see black-necked swan, a rosy-billed...
Oop, the letters are wearing off.
Is that pochard? I can't really tell.
And a widgeon.
Widgeon just sounds cool.
Okay. I always have to duck into the little cave here where you can see the backside of Animal
Kingdom water.
And there it is.
Oh, you know what we're going to do?
Again, pardon the microphone noise. I'm rummaging in the official Walkabout Indiana Jones bag of mine here. because we are going to do a walkabout sticker drop here at backside of animal
kingdom water nice easy to find well if I can manage to get it to stay here and
not fall down Let's do this. Here we go. See if I can take a picture of it.
One of these days, guys. Security.
Okay.
Man, let's put the stickers up. So much rummaging.
I'm sorry, folks.
And here we are.
The very top
of the walkway
down into Discovery Island.
Photo pass is happening.
Tree of life directly in front of you in the far distance
Nice to see the wildernesside Depot to your right.
And I'm not sure if you guys have noticed this.
There is a water fountain, a dual water fountain over here.
To the right as you enter.
Let me take a picture of it for you it's flanked by two birds that
yeah I have no idea what they are
but it is a tile
water fountain over here
with loads of animal insignia
on it, beautiful I'm not sure I've remarked on this before, but I love the colors, the color palette over
here on Discovery Island.
Kind of orange reds, rusty reds, tropical blues, rich greens.
Happy cars.
Right now I'm doing what we do.
I'm not quite yet wallowing in the ambience, but I'm at least stepping the toe into it.
There's a tree to the right blooming beautiful white.
I would love to know what it is. The ever-present drink cart rolling by.
It's breezy, it is cloudy.
We were supposed to have thunderstorms today, which is why we are here kind of early.
Normally this is an evening endeavor,
but today I ventured over here a little early to beat the storms.
All right, let's walk past the Tree of Life.
A bustling park today.
Love to see that. All right, we're passing the Tree of Life on your left.
Discovery Trading Company on your right. Flame Tree Barbecue to the far right distance and the bridge over to Asia and Anandapur directly ahead.
And that's
where we're going
a lot of carts out today Discovery Island, the ambience, so good.
For those of you recently joining us, we have two episodes where...
I love the fellow travelers who are head down in a phone and don't even realize they're about to run over me.
We have two episodes where we parked ourselves over at Flame Tree BBQ seating area in a couple of different places.
And the ambience over there is astounding.
And you can listen to both of those.
I think they're both about 20-some minutes of just excellent Discovery Island tunes.
Here we are passing Adventurer's Outpost on the right, which always seems to be closed.
Has that ever been back open?
That's the Mickey and Minnie meet-and-greet.
If it's been back open, I haven't seen it.
Tough to be a bug entrance
in the Tree of Life off to your left.
And you're just now
passing under the Asia
Bridge.
Gorgeous
redstone brick walls
to the right and the left.
Asian elephant insignia stamped in the gray concrete and the Discovery River. Wait what is this? It's Kevin! Let's
take a picture of Kevin guys it would be just a crime if we didn't do that. There goes Kevin
Strolling his way across the
Bridge towards Discovery Island
Can you guys hear that?
Screams of people on the Forbidden Mountain.
I'm standing on the Discovery River Bridge.
There's the flotilla.
Drinkwala is directly ahead of us.
Which is, of course, the Coca-Cola vendor here in Asia.
But it is immaculately set dressed.
One of my favorite places.
And all week long, as I clickety-clacked on my little keyboard and wrote the little codes that allows me to have food,
I thought, man, I don't want to be behind a monitor.
Things look beautiful, and I just want to go get a frozen Coke and chill in Asia for a minute.
So we're doing that today. Beautiful boats down here directly underneath the overlook seating at the drinkwala.
Set dressed with all kinds of cool stuff.
I see a few tiffin containers and percolator coffee pots and loads of Coca-Cola themed things, of course.
The flotilla is out there just beating the crap out of some drums out there in the middle of the Discovery River area.
All right, come with me. Let's get a frozen coke pay no attention to the cost
hi could I just get a frozen coke please?
Would you like it in this cup? No thank you. No thanks
No thanks
Frozen Coke procured No, thanks
Frozen coke procured
So much cool things to look at is that right so much cool things so many cool things English is hard
So many cool things to look at inside the drink walla
again set dressing
Beautiful
The signage over here is incredible. I'm trying to resist the urge to read some of it I will read one because it has special meaning there is
an advertisement here for glow signs and if you are sorry that was the sunglasses
hitting the mic I'm not a professional um If you're careful and you scrutinize the wonderful
sign, oh, hello, random birdies. If you scrutinize the drink while the sign itself, it is made
by glow signs. I'll take a picture of our frozen Coke here. I thought about just taking a picture of it on the stone bench here, but like, that's
not artistic. Let's do that. Yeah. I think those are macaws. We are exactly where I have wanted to be
all the live long week.
We are sitting on the little stone bench
right next to Drinkwala.
People are walking by looking at my frozen Coke longingly.
I don't blame them.
And, uh,
wow, that traveler was close enough for me
to smooch.
Do you ever miss
the social distancing? I don't know, man.
Sometimes I do.
But it is breezy
over here, which makes the humidity feel
a little bit better. And
right across the way is Yak and Yeti favorite place to eat in Animal Kingdom and I can see the
folks busily chomping upstairs the windows are coated with water I can
barely see through them because the air conditioning in there is crispy and as i mentioned before it's humid out here oh my gosh guys frozen coke is amazing well worth the whatever it was that i just paid
i think 531. the macaws fly right across this bridge.
Back and forth from the Tree of Life where they do the show.
What was the show called? Do you ever just sit somewhere in Animal Kingdom and just enjoy the vibe and look at the flora and fauna?
I mean, it's fun to people watch, too.
They watch me.
You know, I get the awkward.
When I get a glance across a crowded room in a park, it's never a good one.
It's always the weird kind.
But sometimes I just love to do nothing.
Just to sit here.
I noticed a palm tree over here.
I've never seen it.
It's got leaves.
I have no idea what kind of palm this is.
Luckily I have the Animal Kingdom field guide at home,
and I'm going to look this up when I get back.
As I mentioned when we did our show with Mark from DizLife,
no better park just to sit and enjoy the art and the craft and the care.
Two years of planting before the park even opened in 1998.
Two years.
So what we are going to do now
is we are going to make our way to the left. To the right is the... sorry, looking
at the McCalls again. To your right is going to be further into Asia through Anandapur
over towards the Forbidden Mountain. To the left is going to lead us back to Harambee, and that's where we're going to go.
Because Harambee Market is our destination for some ambiance.
It is surprisingly full in here today.
I haven't checked any of the attraction wait times because, frankly, I don't plan to ride any.
I know.
Privileged local is privileged, but I'm taking you guys along, so I'm not being selfish.
Passing the Up Bird Adventure or whatever it is now called. No, Feathered Friends in Flight. Get it right. And again,
some of the best signage in all of the Disney parks not just
here. It's along these walls and up on the sides of the Disney parks not just here is along these walls and up on the sides
of the buildings posters are incredible
there's a sign over here that I don't know I probably read three times it's
called the hand loom house get best quality carpet silk old and new
poster over here for anandapur seeds specialist there is a poster well
actually it's not even a poster it's a wonderful sign down in the seating area
of drink wallet for an anna-por sees
love to see the signage like reference each other Mr. Kamal's to your left.
What is Mr. Kamal's purveying today?
Chicken dumplings.
Of course, the famous seasoned fries.
Looks like that's it.
And then,
beverages.
We have Caravan Road kiosk open today,
which is cool. We have some... Oh, theyk open today, which is cool.
We have some... Oh, they're selling kakigori.
I've never had that here.
I rarely see that open.
The backside of Tree of Life to your left, and over here to the right, a stream that leads down out of the mountains and down towards the Discovery River.
Gorgeous. gorgeous
you have some native palms here we have some Jatropha trees blooming red, some enormous Crenum lilies that are blooming with giant stalks of purple.
Hmm.
Just taking it in.
As a matter of fact, we're headed into Harambee,
but I'm going to come up right into the entrance of Harambee,
double back very quickly along the walkway that goes right above this stream
and where we were just standing.
There's a path up here through the foliage
that rarely has anyone on it,
and it's got great ambience, it's peaceful.
Let's take a little bit of that in.
Right here by the Guest Experience booth, actually.
Ah, it's dark
back in here.
Very shady. A bit more humid,
but still, it's worth it.
Oh man, this is gorgeous, and I'm going to
get a photo for you.
So ahead is a wooden bridge.
Two of them, actually,
that lead over
feeder streams for the discovery
river and you are just utterly immersed in the trees and the foliage lots of palm it's all
greenery very little bloom back in here because it's shady but it just makes it beautiful huge rocks boulders along the streams looks
utterly natural i'm going to take a picture of this stream for you as well and it's just
incredible to think that this was made this was placed here some of the concepts we've talked about.
I'm a gardener. You guys know this.
A gardener in the sense of British gardening,
less so American gardening where gardening is regarded as crop growing. But this
is a botanical garden. It's it's not like one it is one
and you can come here and just immerse yourself in the garden that is disney's animal kingdom
all right we just walked across the first bridge
here's the second
there's a covered shelter here just a little further ahead that is a perfect place to get
out of the heat over here by the streams get a drink get a snack you could take your your snacks
from mr. Kamal's up here I think there's about four tables back there and on your
way rushing from attraction to attraction take a moment
because these moments are as part of your trip as the attractions are
let's head on into Harambee while we walk over here if I could get a bit personal with you travelers last three weeks have been a bit challenging in the hunt household.
This is Jeremy, as I'm sure you know already, but they've been a bit of a grind.
We've had some sickness in the house, and it's just been tiring and I'm not gonna whine too much like
we're we're all good here but it's been a heck of a three weeks and I really
appreciate the fact that you guys come along with us on these walks it means a
lot to us when you drop a note that walk about WDW, even it's just to say, hey, we really, really appreciate it. We view
you guys as extended family and appreciate the fact that you listen. We do this as a passion
project. No other reason. It brings us joy, which is why we do it. Hopefully it can bring a little
to you. So we're going to take a right here at the exit of this little trail,
head into Harambee around the back entrance,
and we are going to soak and wallow, as it were,
in some of the best ambience in the park.
Ahead is the Harambee Market. Gorgeous white stone buildings to the right and to the left.
Harambee Market seating area to the right.
And to the left is the guest house, the Harambee Guest House.
Knock and wait it says we're going to go around the corner
next to the bicycle shop
Thank you. Ndiye kwa kwa no nintano mo weki

Isn't it great?
So
You said I could have something
And here I come
You know I'm a young man with jobs Okay.
So many sighs.
That's what I do, man.
I'm relaxing.
All right, my drink is finished.
And yes, I'm going to recycle it.
Thanks for reminding me.
Let's walk out of Harambee together. Alright, walking around the corner.
Missouri Sweets now to your left.
So many grilled corn cobs coming my way.
They look so good so any traders to your left
bit of a bottleneck over here today
corn on the cob 529 that is price has no meaning here in Disney, I understand.
That is a lot for a corn on the cob.
But for a corn on the cob, I shouldn't say corn on the cob.
However, man, the smell of these things grilling over here.
I'm hungry.
I'm hungry.
Okay, let's head into Harambe Proper.
Town center.
What is this area called?
Kusafiri Bakery is open.
That's cool.
Let's see what Kusafiri has to offer today.
They have a marinated pork flatbread sandwich,
spiced potato hand pies, and marinated chicken flatbread.
All of that looks good.
From Bossa Marketplace to your left.
Oh, hey, look here.
Koratinga Tinga is playing and he is not up on stage.
He's out roaming.
Let's go say hi.
Love this. Terima kasih telah menonton Nice move, nice move.
The youngsters are dancing. Standing next to Tamu Tamu where he eats and refreshments.
Across from Tusker House restaurant,
the center of Harambee, listening to Koratinga Tenga.
Sweat running down my face
and it feels perfect
all right Cora tinga tinga retiring for a while not sure there is any more
beautiful or beautifully decorated section of the parks
than the center of Harambe.
And I just love it.
The Dawa Bar has a long line, which is as it should be one of these days we need to have a walk about the
world meet up at the dollar bar where we all meet up and set and converse
awkwardly enjoy frosty adult beverage and soak up the ambience of Harambee. What say you? To my introvert
self, that sounds perfect. Tell you what, here's what we're going to do.
We're going to walk over here by the
Discovery River where the sign
says, Welcome to Harambe,
Port of East Africa,
by the cannon.
Clouds look ominous.
Hopefully I can make it back to where I parked in dinosaur 35 which i think is basically out on the roadside of i4 so far and I'm pointing
gorgeous over here
Crumbling

Concrete walls of this overlook
Where the cannon exists

Thanks for hanging out with me today a little bit
It's been a
wonderful morning
at Disney's Animal Kingdom
