Walkabout The World - A Disney Podcast - Disney's Animal Kingdom Walkabout With Music and Dinosaurs
Episode Date: January 31, 2022Hello Travelers! Journey with us this week to Disney's Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World for one of the longest episodes we've ever released, and it's lengthy for a reason - we took an extended walk... through the park, and managed to catch all four outdoor music acts currently performing! You get to hear the Tam Tam Drummers, Kora Tinga Tinga, Chakranadi, and lastly, Viva Gaia! If that wasn't enough, we also stopped by to see Dr Seeker and his time rover for a trip back to the time of the dinosaurs (this time remembering to properly adjust the mic gain). As always, use good listening devices as we always record in 4 channel surround sound. We hope you enjoy the episode and thanks so much for following along! Look us up at @WalkaboutWDW on Instagram and drop us a note to say hi! Find our producer Josh also on Instagram at @TheSteele. Say hi to our west coast correspondent Ric at @KiltedJediRic. You can now also drop us at line at contact@walkabouttheworld.com. Say hi, give us some suggestions on things you'd love to hear, or even record your own 'Hello Traveler' show open when you are out and about, and we'll work it into a future show! Walkabout The World is a weekly Disney Podcast, always recorded on property at Walt Disney World or Disneyland Resort with the simple goal of making you feel like you are in the middle of the magic.

Hello travelers! Welcome back to Walk About the World from Disney's Animal Kingdom.
The loudest Discovery Island ambience I have ever heard.
I don't know if this is just something that they do in the morning,
but it's kind of great.
And who are we?
We are your weekly audio journey through one of the parks and resorts of Walt Disney World
here in Orlando, Florida.
And on occasion these days from the Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California.
Standing right in the middle, not of Main Street, but of Discovery Island.
Tree of Life directly ahead, Island Mercantile to the left, Discovery Trading Company to the right.
And it is a brisk Florida cold morning.
Before you start making fun of me, it's 43 degrees, feels like 40.
And for Floridians, that's basically minus 15. I have jeans on today.
And that is an interesting development.
The last time I wore jeans was last summer for our wedding anniversary dinner.
So if I have to put jeans on instead of the shorts, it's cold.
Just listen to this.
I'm going to sniffle because it's making my sinuses do strange things.
The air is cold
you're just finding us this is what we do
we take a weekly walk around the parks. We always record live in the parks.
And the goal is to just put you in the middle of the action.
That's all.
We don't cover Disney news.
Plenty of places you can find that.
We don't do critical analysis of the Disney company.
Plenty of places you can do that as well.
What we try to do is experience the parks as works of art, as themed experiences,
not necessarily just the quickest way to do the most rides or the cheapest kiosk to find
the chicken nuggets. All that stuff is worthwhile, but it's not what we do. And so today, I'm
going to take a walk around Animal Kingdom.
Guy had a shirt on that said chubby unicorns need love too.
It's a rhino.
Well done, buddy.
So what are we going to get into today?
I don't know.
I just wanted some animal kingdom. Yeah.
The skies are dark, ominous looking, proper winter clouds here in Florida.
But since it's Florida, trees are also blooming.
Leaves are coming out on the very few deciduous trees that we have.
And it looks kind of gorgeous.
I've passed one, two, three, four, five trees just in this area that are in bloom.
And what I've done is I've taken a left.
And you know where that goes.
We're passing the Otto Grotto. No, it's not Otto.
It's the Otter Grotto no, it's not otter, it's the otter grotto say that real fast three times
you can see the little otters
tree of life remaining to our right
and we're headed towards Harambe
we want to start there
creature comforts ahead to the left.
You know what that is.
That's coffee time.
I had some pre-game coffee, but I may stop in there here in a few.
It's morning.
Did I tell you that?
I'm never here in the morning.
But we are today.
So we're going to walk towards Sarambe.
There are a few things I'd like to accomplish today,
which is far more ambitious than we normally are.
But I thought we might take in a couple of attractions today
because it's early enough where the crowds aren't concentrated yet,
unless you're trying to get on Flight of Passage, which I'm not.
Last time I checked, the safari line wasn't too long. We're going to get on flight of passage which I'm not last time I check the Safari line wasn't too long we're gonna check it out and see but gates of
Africa directly ahead Terra treats kiosk which is always closed it seems passing
to our right but a couple of things I wanted to do if I can make it happen
is take in Dinosaur again
the last time we did Dinosaur
I screwed it up
I messed up the microphone gain
and it pegged the mic
because that attraction is loud
hello ambience in the bushes
wilderness ambience
but another thing I wanted to try to do today is take in some
of the shows, and I don't mean like the Lion King show, but there are a couple of live
shows here now again. Koratinga Tinga, which we've recorded before already, is in Harambe.
And I hear some music ahead. The Tam Tam Drummers are also in Harambe. And I hear some music ahead.
The Tam Tam Drummers are also in Harambe.
They trade places with
Kora Tinga Tinga, I believe.
And over in Asia,
they have Chakranadi.
I'm not sure what stage.
I think it may be...
Yeah, this is the Tam Tam Drummers.
All right, let's take some of this in here in a second.
But we're crossing the bridge into Harambe, by the way.
But over in Asia, there's a little stage right near where the Discovery Riverboats used to be,
kind of catty-cornered across from Yak and Yeti. I think that may be where Chakranadi is. And then
lastly, in Discovery Island, we're going to work our way all the way back around. In Discovery
Island, I think there's an act performing there that does a little dance party.
Nope, I will not be dancing.
But I think there's a dance party thing at the little stage right across from Flame Tree.
So I'm going to check the times, see if we can take in at least a couple of these.
We can definitely take in Tam Tam.
Discovery River, beautiful this morning.
Lily pads are blooming pink.
Oh, also, we have competing drums.
Hilarious.
Coming down Discovery River right below us here in a moment
is one of the flotillas with the drummers.
Let's take a listen. I'll be quiet. Welcome to Harambe, Port of East Africa.
The flotilla is a slow-moving one.
Okay, here we come. Flotillas are something I hope they keep.
Now entering Harambee Town Square.
Tusker House to the left. Tam Tamu Refreshments to your right
directly ahead
the Mombasa Marketplace building
blooming with gold
and pink bougainvilleas
and the Tam Tam drummers
are on set. Let's go. lively crowd here too
I love to see it ¡A tu una patata! Thank you. Thank you everybody. Everyone does that, huh? Can you have another chance to say yes?
Yes!
Thank you everybody!
Tam Tam drummers. This is the type of thing that makes Harambe Harambe, in my opinion.
Love it, love to see it.
They are taking a break.
And one of my favorite tracks, Yo Lele. Judging by the crowd currently in Harambee I'm guessing that
the Kilimanjaro safaris are going to be packed
I think it says 80 dang
see what I'm gonna do
I'm gonna take a right towards the Harambee market I'm going to do.
I'm going to take a right towards the Harambee Market.
I'm going to check some times.
But just to set the scene,
we are across from the entrance to Kilimanjaro Safari's
Zawari Traders to the right,
Harambee Fruit Market directly to the left,
Rafiki's Planet Watch around the corner,
and here on the corner is where you can find hand-carved wooden figures of animals
and kitchen utensils and you name it.
And I actually bought one of these lovely creatures for my parents for Christmas.
Hand carved. And you can actually approach the carver, talk to them and ask them which
of the things they have personally carved. They will point out the ones that they have
done personally and you can snag one. Pardon for the sniffles. Okay. Crowd thinned out
over here next to Zuri Sweets.
And I think I am going to...
See, I'm alone today.
Well, I'm not. You're with me.
But I am Sans Heather or Daughters or Producer Josh.
But I think I'm going to stop in Zuri Sweets on the way out
and bring my family a sweet treat of some sort.
Let's turn the corner over by
harambee market let's check some times the fiqua fellow on the wall directly ahead
it's mickey mouse meaning hidden
i'm over here by Bicycle Land.
For a pair, it says.
And right next to Sir's Hardware.
Let's check some times. All right, it says the Chakranadi is 1155.
Just to let you know, it's now 1018 in my world.
Dinosaurs, five minutes.
I think we're going to have to go do that.
Oh, you know what?
Okay, all right.
So, Koratinga-tinga is 1030 here in Harambe.
And that's just a few minutes. So, I think I'm going to stay in the general vicinity for now.
I think we'll duck in Zuri Sweets here in a minute.
See what kind of goodies we can find in there.
Probably not going to buy anything yet, but buy something on the way out.
But yeah, let's take in Koratinga Tinga here at 1030.
And then we can make our way over towards Asia.
Another goal is I want to see if they have any of the prayer flags
that I was after a few months ago
for my Anandapur wall in my home office.
River journey is 30 minutes.
I thought about taking that in.
Ma Ewa. Ma Ewa, my friends.
We'll see try Sarah top spin only a five-minute wait yeah I'm not
doing that it's windy already and it's cold and just no not doing that
all right let's take a little stroll around Harambee and then we'll camp out and wait
for Koratinga Tinga.
Harambee Market directly to the left.
Amazing theming by the way. Hot foods and cold drinks,
everybody welcome it says. There's an advertisement for Hoteli Buradika,
which as you know is the hotel in the center of Harambee.
What do we have here?
I can see my breath in Florida.
That's weird, right?
Ivory poachers beware, it says.
From now on, offenders will not get away lightly.
And well, they should not. there is a Kilimanjaro safaris map
affixed to the
to the power pole here
and man I would really like to have that
for my office
I'm hinting at Josh right now to the power pole here and uh man i would really like to have that for my office
i'm hinting at josh right now
taking a picture of it for you guys crumbling walls
of the ron bay market give the sense that this has been here a really long time and also i'm going to take a photo of the uh the trash can
here because that's what i do karambe enterprise it says looks like the trash can has been rusting
a great a great mini a year thanks for visiting us today here we go for the safety and health
of everyone the masks fully covering your mouth and nose are required
when indoors.
Wash your hands often, and cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Right as you leave Harambee Market and round the corner towards the entrance to Asia, and
you can circle back around towards Tamu Tamu, there is a multi-colored bench.
Looks like it's been weathered for ages.
And is there any greater meaning to that?
No, it's just awesome, and it's out of the way, and it's got great ambience, and I totally
want to recreate it for my back patio.
So we've turned the corner.
And here we have the muziki shop, which sells drums.
And some of the younger travelers are over there performing for us.
Tamu Tamu is to the right now.
Good eats, it says.
That was also a good show.
Pin station to our left. And there's a sign here, pointing towards Asia, that says Caravan Stage.
And that's interesting, because I'm wondering if that's where Chakranadi performs.
What do we have at Tamu Tamu?
Scar's Lair, Dole Whip pineapple, sour apple.
The Lion's layer, Dole Whip pineapple topped with Parrot Bay coconut rum.
There we go.
Simba Sunset, which is Dole Whip pineapple and watermelon.
And the King's Cooler, which is pineapple topped with Parrot Bay coconut rum,
watermelon, strawberry, coconut.
All that sounds good.
They've got a bunch of Dole Whip floats, African coffee.
All this stuff sounds good. They got a bunch of Dole Whip floats, African coffee. All this stuff looks good. They also have 50th Celebration Colossal Mickey Cinnamon Roll. If you guys
haven't had the big old Mickey Cinnamon Roll, you should. It's awesome.
All right. I'm going to find a place to chill and then rejoin you
when Koratinga Tinga comes out.
See you in a minute.
Sitting on the stone walk across from the Harambe Port Authority
and right next to the Dawa Bar,
directly in front of the Harambe stage.
And Koratinga Ta is starting his act.
We can hear him but we don't yet see him. He's wandering. The The instrument he's playing is the kora.
And now he is on stage. I'm going to go to the restaurant. lively crowd walking through the middle of Harambee
it's just one of the best places to be in all of the Disney parks
the attention to detail here remember talking about these parks as a work of art,
a place to experience.
Just the fidelity to the places that these areas represent is amazing.
Let's just relax and take in Koratinga-Tinga here for just a couple of minutes. Thank you. What?
Kortinga-tinga.
Nice, nice taste.
Oh, that was good.
To our left is the Harambee Fort eating area,
one of the coolest little kind of hidden places that you can grab a meal.
And we are going to make a...
We're not going to go fast because I just don't do that.
But we're passing past Harambee.
We're on the pathway to Asia now.
And why don't you just walk with me
as we head over to Asia to check what we can check.
The beautiful vista for the Tree of Life
is directly to your right.
And here you have some of the streams
coming down
out of the mountains.
Again, these are the details, folks.
The streams go way back into the forest, as it were.
Stop and pause
the hustle and bustle of going to the next ride can't help but notice the
stonework and the rocks and everything just looks incredibly natural and lush
all of it carefully tailored.
The landscape, art, and architecture of this park in particular is astounding.
Caravan Road kiosk to your left.
It is closed.
They are offering shaved ice offerings. I wonder why it's closed.
Who it's not closed is Mr. Kamal's.
To the right here.
Chicken dumplings. Mr. Kamal's seasoned fries.
I've heard
Mr. Kamal does a mean seasoned fry.
Visitors, welcome
to Asia. Anandapur travel and tourism
sign.
Feathered friends in flight theater is directly ahead this thing has changed
changed uh names so often i'm distracted by signs here that look new
okay look guys we're gonna take some pictures of some signs.
If you've been with us a while, you know what's going on here.
Here we have Furba General Store.
PHU RBA.
General Store.
Fun games, also toys.
Imported goods for all local needs.
Local night bus service.
Dekatmandu, 10 hours. Siliguri, 7 hours. And Gyansi, 20 hours.
Departures Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday. I want to catch the night bus to Kathmandu.
That sounds like a book or a song or a movie. And then, oh man, producer Josh, I'm just saying, buddy,
just look at this. I know you can't yet, but you will.
It's a poster for the Drinkwalla in red and white Coca-Cola,
Drinkwalla in green, and we have Kali River Pure drinking water. I have not seen these. These, you can
tell they have peeled off older signs and affixed these. Shangri-La Trekkers Inn and
Internet Bar. I love this stuff. The area around the, let's get the name right, the area around the Feathered Friends in Flight,
very much not the Up Bird Adventure, has some of the best signage.
Stop and take a peek.
The bird show is ongoing as we speak, by the way.
But that is indeed the stage right across from the Bird Theater,
is where Chuck Granati is going to perform at 11.55,
which is a little over an hour from now.
And I'm checking out the bulletin board here,
the Nandapur bulletin board,
and guys, there's new signage.
If you're a signage hunter, a sign hunter,
they've got a bunch of new ones.
I'll take a picture, some pictures of this too.
These are gorgeous.
I love to see this stuff being refreshed.
So here we have Arjun's apples,
the best apple products in tins and jars
for the traveling eater.
That's us!
Here we have balloons and lanterns.
Many beautiful color and material.
Ready to take custom order, it says,
by the way.
I gotta see what this says.
Mr. Denno
Mustang Coffee.
He's a Dendi Sherpa.
With an
Annapur Apple Brandy. Only the best With an Andapur Apple Brandy
Only the best
So Mustang Coffee with Apple Brandy
I wish I knew where they
Where Mr. Deno
D-E-N-O
Wish I knew where he was purveying that product
We have the Meditation Center
Keep Calm
An Andapur Theater with a gorgeous logo. Marvelous productions,
famous visiting artists. I just love all of this stuff. Okay, you've had enough, I'm sure,
of your intrepid host randomly reading signs. Okay, come on. Let's go.
We're going to be walking past Yak and Yeti to our left.
And we're making a grand circle tour over here today,
working our way over to Dinosaur.
Favorite places on Earth.
Drink Walla to the right.
Am I going to stop and take pictures? Yes, I am, because why wouldn't you?
If you guys haven't seen it,
I had the Drinkwalla sign recreated for my home office. No, I'm not rich.
The artist Phil Daly works at
Universal Creative, and he was amazing. It wasn't that
expensive, and it's incredible. I look at it every day from my desk, and it makes me
happy. Okay, now, passing Yak and Yeti and the Yak and Yeti Walk-Up. That's not the name of it. Anandapur Local Food Cafe is what it's called. And we are going to trek
down towards Asia. We're going to pop in the store at Everest. Ooh, you know I say that.
Everest is closed. Did you know that?
Everest is down for refurb, and no,
I don't think you can expect that the disco party featuring the Yeti is going to stop anytime soon.
But I'm hoping the store is still open. It may not be.
Entrance to Cali, directly ahead.
Standby entrance, five minutes 5 minutes wonder why that is
if you are riding Cali River Rapids
right now
you are superhuman
not getting anywhere near that
because it's still not even 50 degrees
maybe if you're from pure Michigan
I don't know I have friends in Michigan,
but I used to live in Chicago, and it was very cold, and Michigan was north of that,
so I imagine it must be very cold. So maybe if you come down here and it's 50, you're not me okay
we are leaving Anandapur
headed into
Circazong
Discovery River to your right
where they
where they perform kite tails
down here at the river bend
just around the river bend,
just around the river bend.
Yeti Palace Hotel to our left.
Also another one of the Disney walls where you can get your picture taken.
In faded blue and white.
Here we have Gupta's Gear, also one of the best ambient places.
And the Shangri-La Trekkers Inn.
The Anandapur ice cream truck to the left, beautifully decorated.
Zero customers.
Shocked. I'm shocked.
I'm actually really surprised they have that open.
Thirsty River Bar.
That's a few customers.
Just because it's cold doesn't mean you can't be thirsty.
It's very misty and foggy over here by Everest with the mountains in the background.
And it looks incredibly realistic.
The prayer flags overhead are actually blowing because it's breezy, which makes like 48 degrees feel even better.
And I'm going to go see if the store is open.
Everest is closed, but the store is open.
Do we know
when Everest is coming back? Yes, around April.
Cool, thank you.
Let's go in the
Circazong Bazaar, and I'm just going to look around.
But first we have to mask up, so I'm going to put you
travelers down on a
trash can. Forgive me.
Okay, that wasn't too bad, right?
Let's go in.
Man, there's nobody over here.
Yeah, absolutely.
No, I would literally die.
This is the Circus Ong Bazaar.
Gorgeous doors.
Paneled, ancient-looking doors.
Mickey Safari hats.
Mickey towels. Come come on prayer flags
come on buddy
don't see them yet
that's a really good
Yeti themed t-shirts in here these days though
also zero ambience in here
that's why I'm whispering
well boo Also zero ambience in here. That's why I'm whispering.
Well, boo.
Alright.
Well, so be it. We tried.
We're outside now.
Coming up the steps out of the Everest area.
And we're going to head out of
Circa Zong
over the bridge towards the
Theater in the Wild.
Rafiki and Timon, Flotilla coming These guys are getting it
Those characters are the warmest among us.
Theater in the wild to the left.
Ambience over here muted as well.
Picking up the pace a little bit.
Nemo not yet returned.
Although it's supposed to be.
A reimagined version.
I think a finding Dory version.
Alright, we are passing.
We are passing to our left.
Yeah, you know what it is.
It's the Dino-rama.
And I've already forgotten the name of the dinosaur, and I feel ashamed.
It's something like... Oh, it's Cementosaurus.
That's what it is.
No, I'm not making that up.
It's true.
A little James Brown to go with your Animal Kingdom morning.
Do it.
There it is. There it is.
Chester and Hester's dinosaur, dinosaur, not dino-shore, dinosaur, treasures up and to
the left.
It's fossiliferous it says.
Can't believe I didn't screw that up. And we are making a beeline towards Dinosaur, which is directly ahead.
We're going to come up here.
We're going to mask up.
I'm going to skip the queue.
Well, okay, I'm not going to skip the queue.
You are.
I'm going to allow you to skip the queue.
Time travel commencing in T-minus 10 seconds and counting.
This is secret. Listen up. We've got to get in, grab the aguanodon, and get out before that asteroid hits. Let's roll! Okay, now let's go get that dino. Computer, what are you tracking?
Styracosaurus.
Not our dino.
Warning, meteor shower in range. Just a little one.
Ardoramus.
Hadrosaur.
Raptor.
Time to get serious.
Locking autopilot on homing signal now.
Hang on!
I'm tracking a big dino on the scope.
Could be ours.
Computer, full stop.
Identify.
Carnotaurus. Computer, full stop. Identify. Garnet for us.
Definitely not our dino.
Go, go, go!
Another big guy coming up.
Computer, slow and identify.
Sauropod.
Still not our dino, but at least this one's a vegetarian.
Asteroid impact in 90 seconds.
We'd better move it.
Pterodactyl.
Incoming!
Asteroid impact in 60 seconds. We can't stop now. Keep going, keep going.
Compsognathus.
Computer, what's happening?
Loss of traction.
Four-wheel drive, move it!
Warning, meteors strike.
Evasive maneuver! Left! Right! Left! Right!
That was close.
Computer, now what?
Carnotaurus.
That's it. Abort mission. Abort! Abort!
Iguanodon.
Forget it! Get them out now!
Asteroid impact.
Brace yourselves! This is it!
They're not gonna make it! They're not gonna make it!
Mission accomplished.
You made it! I knew you would, and guess who made it back with you?
I'd better find it before security does. Thanks for everything!
Well, we got to ride Dino,
and now we're over here in Anandapur,
and Chakranadi is performing.
We're sitting on a little stone bench over here right next to him and let's enjoy. Thank you. Thank you very much, my friends.
Namaste, everyone. Welcome to Anandapur.
Thanks for visiting this afternoon.
My name is Chakradnadi, playing the sitar,
19-stringed instrument from the days of the Maharajas. I'm going to do a tune now for anybody who missed their trip up Mount
Everest. This is called Kashmir Express. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Viva Gaia Song, come sing along, Viva Gaia Song, come join the fun, it's going to be great.

Viva Gaia. Se va a chupar, guay Se va a chupar, guay Se va a chupar, guay
Hasta que la comienzo a pensar
Y me subo a mi niña de chica
Tome coraje, tome el día Y me subo en mi niña de chica
No me coraje, no me voy a calmar
The Viva Gaia show recently back here at Disney's Animal Kingdom.
They're playing at the stage right across from Flame Tree BBQ
and right around the corner from the Discovery Island Trading Post.
A large crowd dancing along, having a great time.
Couples dancing.
Not kidding.
Dang near chokes me up.
I know, I'm sentimental, but it's almost like the old Animal Kingdom, guys.
In the before times.
There's four musical
acts outside that we
caught today. I believe we caught all of them.
Love it.
And guys, with that, I'm going to wrap today's expedition up.
Thanks for hanging out.
It's been a fun day.
Hanging around in various areas of the park.
Took in dinosaur.
And I did remember to turn the gain down, so when you hear this, you can be the judge.
Whether it ends up okay.
But it's been fun.
I always love it here.
