Imagine a world for you and me That's called a soft open, folks.
Well, hello. How are you, travelers?
I feel like we haven't talked in a while.
And also, welcome back.
Not only to walk about the world, but to the most magical place on Earth,
Disney's Magic Kingdom.
Back for the first time in a while, I have to admit,
because this is the hardest park to get into
for reservation reasons and logistical reasons.
But we, we, Walk About the World, if you are just joining us,
we are a weekly auditory journey through the parks and resorts of Walt Disney World here in Orlando, Florida,
and in Disneyland in Anaheim, California.
We have a care of our West Coast correspondent, Rick. Thank you, sir.
And you guys have recently got to hear some of his excellent recordings.
And I'm just super glad he's aboard.
You guys have heard some of producer and co-host Josh's recordings too, recently.
So it's been fun.
It's nice to have the whole team activated.
But we are here at Magic Kingdom this evening.
It is an evening.
It is a very windy, slightly drizzly, blustery Central Florida evening, but it's like 81. It feels wonderful. And I'm here for a particular reason. I've had this little episode brewing
in my head for a while. And I tell you what we're going to do. Here's the pitch. I want to talk about everything you can do, see, or experience in and around Main Street, USA.
Nothing else.
Just Main Street and the areas surrounding Main Street.
So right now we are in Town Square.
And so Town Square counts.
And then anything directly attached to Main Street counts.
And so what we're going to say is the hub is off limits, but like Casey's, yep, that counts.
Plaza, that counts. Town Square, that counts.
And we're going to start here, and your job, after you listen to this, is to hit us up over at walkaboutwdw on Instagram and tell me what I missed.
You can also send us an email at contact at walkabouttheworld.com. Tell me your favorite things or interesting things to do,
see, experience in and around Main Street that I missed, because there's a bunch of them. Like,
Heather and I were just kind of like dry rehearsing this before I got here.
And man, there is so many small things.
You just heard one of them.
As a matter of fact, we'll start there.
You can experience cavalcades.
And that was the Minnie and Mickey cavalcade.
But that's one of the things.
And we're going to start here and talk about everything.
Everything we can think of.
And literally as I am speaking, another cavalcade approaches.
But let's get in a couple of things before that.
So here in Town Square, here in Town Square, we have the train station.
And the train station is one of my favorite things to look around in.
And the train itself, as you guys know, I'm a train guy.
And I can't wait for the train to return.
But if it was here that's something
that you can do. Another thing that you can do here is look at the beautiful plantings here in
Town Square that also have some of the 50th statues and so right now I'm looking at I know
I'm a plant nerd but I'm looking at purple vinca I'm looking at pink roses and it's just gorgeous
over here they also have crepe myrtles
that'll be blooming so you can take in some of the town square beautiful ambience you can have
a seat and take a picture with a disney photopass photographer with the statue of roy and minnie
i have a feeling it's about to get loud here pretty soon. There we go.
Okay, let's listen. Thank you. This is the Pixar cavalcade. We'll fly across the galaxies and journey through the night Jump and jump in, spin, spin, travel, we have to find the ride
And if it's just imagination, we'll see the world tonight
Bum-oom, bum-oom, touch the summer magic in the sky
Let your heart beat around the clock, bum-oom, bum-oom
Visit playgrounds far and wide and see the stars in the sky, like a hot meal Now, ba-bo, ba-bo Visit playgrounds far and wide
And see the sky's red design
Ba-bo, ba-bo
The China's glowing eyes and face

There's adventure everywhere
To the most scenic spot in town
Hit the gates of the Brazil
We are into all this dance
To the cool and legal dancesass, to the Beatles, to the Brass Band To the blue lights, they go crazy, running from that justice light
To the devils of the night, to the junkies that should be
Welcome back to the night, right? Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go. Through every legendation now Dreaming, as far as I can reach

Let's go, let's go, let's go
Let's go, let's go, let's go
Let's go, let's go, let's go
Let's go, let's go, let's go
Let's go, let's go, let's go
Let's go, let's go, let's go
Let's go, let's go, let's go
Let's go, let's go, let's go
Let's go, let's go, let's go
Let's go, let's go, let's go Let's go, let's go, let's go. Let's go. Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go. Let's go. Let's go. Let's go. Let's go. Are you sad it's over?
Yeah, I'm sad.
Well, you've been here with me for 12 minutes and we've already heard two cavalcades,
so I wonder if that cadence is going to keep up because that's kind of a lot actually that
cavalcade had everything um pixar jungle book like mary poppins like everything so it's hard to even
remember everything that it had going on there so where did we leave off we're in town square
we've mentioned some of the things that you can do. And just to recap, we're talking
about things we can do, see, experience
in and around Main Street
USA. And so I'm standing right next to one
of them. Tony's Town Square.
So
Town Square has a theater, which isn't
actually a theater, but you can meet
characters in there.
I think Mickey
at this point you can meet in the Town Square Theater,
but also Tony's Town Square Restaurant
is right next door.
Have you eaten at Tony's?
I've heard not great reviews,
and I've heard slightly better than not great reviews,
but you can tell me what you think.
But if you need a bite to eat in and around Main Street,
if we had nowhere else to go,
you could get some food at Tony's Town Square.
And you know where else you could get some food?
Right across from Tony's at the Confectionary.
And I will be doing that tonight.
I'm not leaving here lest I have a treat from the Confectionary.
And to me, the Confectionary is fun not only because you can go grab a snack but because
it just smells wonderful and nothing epitomizes main street usa more than walking past the
confectionery seeing the castle smelling the bakery smells that i'm fairly certain that they
pump out into the air to make us go buy cookies uh and I am here for it. That is awesome.
So looking to my left, we actually have Town Hall.
And Town Hall, and this is Heather telling me this,
and we hear a little one melting down.
Can you hear them? Poor little thing.
It's an episode, though.
But Heather says, you can get a celebratory pin over there at town hall or at least you used to be able to we did that before and that's pretty cool right next to town hall and i'm not sure if
you've experienced this but the fire station is over there and the car barn is next to it but you
can walk through the fire station see an old-fashioned fire engine, all kinds of
firefighting equipment of ages gone by. It's actually really cool, and a lot of patches and
insignias from fire stations across the United States are in there. I hadn't done it in a really
long time. We did it last year, and I was kind of surprised. It's kind of cool. So is there anything I missed?
Oh, yes, there is. Okay. So you can take a trolley ride. Can you take a car ride too? I can't
remember. It's been too long since I was here early. But you can take a trolley ride pulled
by a beautiful horse and you can meet said horse i think you can also take a car ride but
tell me if i'm wrong there i won't i won't mention what else you could see the horse do but like
there i i kind of said it just then i'm not mature we know this uh and there's a sign over here that
actually says horse drawn street cars so that's something you can do.
And also the popcorn cart is by the Chamber of Commerce over there.
And the exit, you can get yourself a bag of freshly popped popcorn.
And we haven't even left Town Square.
And by the way, there's one more thing.
You can attend the flag ceremony here, right in the center of Town Square.
It's been a really, really long time since I've seen that.
But you can see the flag ceremony, which is always really cool.
What else? What else have I missed so far?
Can you get your hair cut on Main Street?
Like, I think you can when it's operating.
I don't know if you can right now.
But I think that's a thing, right?
The Main Street haircut thing
is a thing. You used to be able
to buy hats. I think you can still buy hats,
but I think that's now a part
of the greater confectionery store
type thing. So I tell you what we're going to do.
We are going
to move on from Town Square
so many
things just to experience
and we haven't even got to Main Street yet.
Passing the statue of Roy to the left
with beautiful flowers behind it
and looking down the way to Cinderella's castle.
You can even picture it.
I don't even have to describe it to you.
But the castle in the distance against dark skies,
it's absolutely
gorgeous so right here we are and i am already detecting the wonderful sense of the confectionery
so i'm going to mention one of the first things that you can do on main street and that is you
know one of the things that we do here is we hunt down all the signage in the parks and this park is
next level it doesn't have the place making necessarily of like
uh disney's animal kingdom on the signage but there is so much history built into the signs
here and i wish i knew more of it i would talk to you about it i really really don't so many
legendary imagineers and and people of importance of dis Disney history are up in the signs, and
you could just take an hour and look at the signs and research them, which wouldn't be
a waste of time at all.
I'm heading over to the left, towards the entrance of the Emporium, and I've got a lot to say about the Emporium.
And I've got a lot to say about the Emporium.
I kind of feel like, believe it or not, it could be its own episode.
Because you could just quickly say, yeah, it's the merch destination of Magic Kingdom.
However, there's so much more to it, and I'm going to give you one of them.
Here along the side, if you're looking down towards Engine Company 71, the fire station,
and coming back up the street towards the entrance of the Emporium, there are gorgeous displays, window displays, like you would see in department stores in days gone by.
And right now, there are, I'm just looking at a Snow White vignette, a Cinderella vignette, Little Mermaid vignette.
But during the holidays, these are decorated with wonderful holiday vignettes.
Again, like you would see at some downtown department store.
Because again, this is Main Street USA of old, right?
And also, the Emporium is the original Disney store.
Long before there was a World of Disney, we had the Emporium is the original Disney store. Long before there was a World of Disney, we had the Emporium,
and the cool thing about the Emporium to me
is that it's a large place that you can walk through.
Not only can you get a nice hit of AC,
but I just have a lot of fond memories of looking through merch, man,
because one of the things you can do in and around Main Street is buy stuff.
And so you could have the cynical view and be like, yeah, Main Street's the retail funnel
of the park. And is it? Yes, of course it is. But we, come on, folks, we love to buy
Disney stuff. And you can go in the Emporium and just browse to your heart's content in
the air conditioning. And I absolutely love it.
I could say a lot more.
But if you go down the street to the left towards Casey's, if you stay on the Casey's side of the street,
it is emporium for days.
But we're not going to do that.
We are going to take a look across the other side.
So you have the Main Street Confectionary, as we've talked about.
And right now you are right in the middle of Main Street USA.
Main Street Confectionary to your right.
And then you hit here to the right, you also have directly past the Confectionary, you have the Main Street Cinema.
Now showing 50 Years of magic, it says.
But I think, tell me if I'm wrong.
I'm just going to poke in.
Oh, you also have, what do we have here?
The magic of WDW.
We have the Walt Disney World Vault Collection here.
It's a small little sub-store off of this,
but it's got all kinds of really cool retro park merch. Man, I haven't seen a lot of this.
Mr. Toad greeting us all at the entrance. Oh, yeah, man. Lots of vintage park stuff over here
that I see. I'm not going to spend time in here, but it's very cool. And then over here in the actual
theater is... I'm pausing
not to run over some poor folks.
Pardon.
This is the Pandora
location, and you can also find really cool dresses in here and can you get
Dooney in here yes you can if you're a Dooney and Burke fan I'm looking right at it actually
there's a new actually I don't know if it's new but new to me there's a Dooney and Burke
Peter Pan collection here which is really cool
ear collections collection here, which is really cool.
Ear collections.
And very fancy things over to the right that I can't afford.
But if you wanted to buy Dooney,
if you wanted to buy a dress, if you wanted to buy
ears,
all of that stuff you could do in the Main Street Theater.
So where are we now?
We are now at Center Street.
Thank you, Josh, for teaching me what the heck the name of the street is.
So it's kind of the street that intersects, well, it does intersect Main Street.
It goes off to the right.
To the left, it kind of runs right into the center of the greater Emporium area.
But off to the right here on Center Street, you have one of the things that you can do,
which is get yourself a silhouette created.
And this is something that a lot of folks do with their kids.
You can even have it done with a pet.
They have the little cart over here where the artist will create a beautiful silhouette for you. And'll be framed and you can take it home and those type of things are heirlooms. You
can keep them forever. Also there's some wonderful signs over here. Am I going too quickly? I'm trying
to slow down. I'm just energized this evening. Let's just soak in a little bit of the ambiance while we're here that was french
a very lively main street this evening okay We're just halfway down Main Street.
We're just starting here.
So one of the things here that we are looking straight into as we cross Center Street is Crystal Arts.
Now, I don't know about you, but I actually haven't been in Crystal Arts for a really long time.
But if you want to see glass blowing and creations of
glass and crystal.
And some
Erebus Brothers stuff is in here.
It's really cool.
Lots of interesting things you can take home
for a pretty penny. And I'm actually
looking in the window. They have a
crystal Erebus
Brothers Cinderella's
castle that doesn't have a price because it's probably
more than any of us have put together.
So we're going to turn right, and if you know your Main Street, and I think you do. As you pass the Crystal Store, you have the Main Street Bakery.
And you know what the Main Street Bakery is, folks?
That's right.
It's Starbucks.
So if you want to get yourself a venti vanilla sweet cream cold brew with one pump of mocha added,
theoretically, I'm not sure why that rolled off my tongue so easily, you could do it. 20 vanilla sweet cream cold brew with one pump of mocha added. Theoretically.
I'm not sure why that rolled off my tongue so easily.
You could do it.
So when you're coming down Main Street USA and you need a coffee pick-me-up,
they got you covered.
I'm also pausing underneath one of the lovely Main Street trees.
And I'm looking across to... The entrances to the different areas of the Emporium are interesting to me
because I'm looking at the House of Magic.
Tricks, puzzles, it says.
And also, next to it is the Main Street Fashion and Apparel entrance.
It's all the Emporium. It's all the same thing.
But the entrances are decked
out in different manners, which are really
cool.
Let's say, theoretically,
you're on
Main Street, and you've taken your
trolley ride, and you've had your
morning coffee, you've done
some shopping,
and perhaps bought yourself some crystals of things and ears and you've soaked in the ambiance hey you know what
else you can do at center street you can buy a balloon i totally forgot about that i'm gonna
forget a bunch here guys there's There's so many things. So many
things. But you can get a balloon. Just say you've done all that and you're like, man,
I could use a sweet treat, but you know what? I've already had my cookie from the confectionary.
What can I have? You know what you can do? You can go right past the Starbucks conveniently
and get yourself an ice cream at the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor.
Which we're headed to right now.
And I just passed a pirate.
A very small pirate.
Waving his sword menacingly at me.
Not sure if I should be afraid.
But here is. The cream parlor. You're now directly under
it and next to the entrance. Oh my goodness, guys. Can you smell it? I know you can't,
but I can. Oh, geez. That, okay. If we're going to take a uh a vote on on the sense on the um
who's going to win the scent competition here that doesn't sound right but still
i say plaza ice cream absolutely demolishes the confectionery because uh wow that just kind of
knocked me over in a good way going past that.
So you can get yourself an ice cream.
You can take yourself right across the street and sit yourself underneath one of the yellow and white umbrellas
and eat your ice cream and take a look at the castle in the distance and watch the day go by
and watch weird people walking around with microphones in the park and wonder,
what the heck is that guy doing?
I'm not saying that any of those people
are doing that right now, but they may be.
So we're not going into the hub, correct?
That's right.
Because the hub's off limits.
But let's say, theoretically,
you just had your double scoop ice cream cone
and you're like,
you know what would go really well with that?
A foot long hot dog.
You are in luck because there are two things at your disposal.
First off, we just walked across the street, and here we have Casey's Corner.
Where you can get all manner of tube-like meats.
Is that bad?
I'm sorry.
You can get your meats plain.
I was going to say raw, but that's not right.
They're definitely cooked.
You can get your hot dog plain, covered with various other substances like chili,
or you can even fry it in dough and have a corn dog.
And once you do, once you've thrown that hot dog
on top of your double scoop of chocolate ice cream,
lucky for you,
and you may think this worked out accidentally,
but I was going to mention this anyway,
it just happens that the flow works really well.
I can't imagine that this is not an accident,
but right around the corner from Casey's,
you know what we have?
That's right, the first aid area so so when you inevitably stumble across the way
into the first aid tent and you're like my tummy and they're like oh yeah we know
you'll be taken care of and then I think the last thing I'm going to allow here on the periphery of Main
Street is the Crystal Palace, because I mean, let's face it, it's right around the corner.
Oh, you know what? Nope, we have one more. We have one more restaurant. Okay, I'm glad you
reminded me. We have the Crystal Palace here to the left, and I will confess to you, I've never
been, I've never done it. And maybe that makes me a bad parent, I don't know you I've never been. I've never done it.
And maybe that makes me a bad parent. I don't know.
We've never really been
character meal folks.
I know. I'm sorry. I know many
of you absolutely love character dining.
And I'm actually sure it'd be cool.
It's just never been our thing. So we haven't done it.
But the Crystal Palace is
always one of the most gorgeous
places in the park
because it has the beautiful, like, old-fashioned conservatory glass at the top,
and it's framed by foxtail palms.
And I'm going to take a picture of it for you
because foxtail palms are my favorite palm of all.
They look gorgeous all year, and they self-clean.
I know. Who wants to know this? Nobody.
But I am lucky enough to have a few foxtail palms right off my back patio,
and unlike queen palms that are disgusting and dirty and you have to maintain them constantly,
I just took a picture and I didn't turn my sound down. Man, I'm a genius.
These palms self-clean so the branches just come
nicely off. And I will also tell you
that right here in front of Crystal Palace
is a bed of roses
and behind it
is a hedge of gardenia.
Guys,
the scent
competition just got ramped up
because
gardenias are the indisputed king of scent in the plant world.
Gardenia just smells like heaven.
There's no way for me to get close to it or I would just go over there and stick my face in one of the flowers.
But we don't want to encourage security any more than we already do.
So we're going to head back away
from
Crystal Palace,
and we're going to head
just on the periphery here
of the hub.
To my right, as I'm walking back,
is the tables for Casey's
Corner. I'm hearing an announcement.
You can see the ducks over there
busily gobbling french fries.
Ah, warms my heart.
Not sure what this announcement is here.
Are they doing something at the castle, maybe?
Okay, well, whatever it is, it's about to start, and it starts here where the magic feels like home.
And it kind of does.
We're going to cross a busy main street and not get ran over.
We did just completely, completely crash what no doubt was an amazing photo of a couple in the castle.
Good job, guys.
Okay, so we're headed back here.
We're in front of Plaza Ice Cream again.
Because we forgot to go one doorstep down, which is the Plaza Restaurant.
Another confession to you, I've never been. I know. And the thing is
about the Plaza, unlike the Tony's Town Square, is that I've actually heard really good things
about the menu. And so like, this is a place I actually want to visit. We just haven't got it
done. We're going to actually try to make that happen this year. I'm not sure if we'll get to
make it happen before the broiling heat of summer is upon us.
We may have to wait till fall again, but it is on the list.
And so here we are.
We have toured Main Street.
We have went to the left.
We've went to the right.
And I am now standing at the entrance to Tomorrowland Terrace, with Tomorrowland in the distance, the little lagoon surrounding the Tomorrowland Terrace is right in front of you.
The ducks over there doing their whatever it is that ducks do.
I imagine that it's fun and is much more contentful than my life.
I envy them.
But it is a beautiful evening.
And so far, we're about 30 minutes in here.
30 minutes of straight talking about
things that you can do, experience, see, eat
in and around Main Street, USA.
I will tell you the...
the genesis of this. I don't know if you guys listen to the Resort Loop
podcast. If you don't, you should. It used to be Tim Scott, Bob Collar. Bob hung up the microphone
a couple years back, but Tim is still going strong. And I occasionally join him over there to ruin a show of his but back in the day uh Resort Loop
podcast had an episode all about what it was just a thought exercise like what could you do if you
decided to spend a day on Main Street USA like the whole day like you're not going anywhere else
what could you do and what people came up with was incredible, and I've always loved it.
I've listened to the episode many times.
If I had the number, I would tell you, but I'd have to look it up.
But I thought about just how many things there are,
and I know that I've missed a ton of them.
So I am going to wrap it up here, but I do want you to help me out.
I will actually make a post on Instagram about this
when the episode airs and I want you to tell me what I missed if there are things in and around
Main Street that you absolutely love that you always do and they could be very small moments
as a parent like we talked about the balloons? Like I can remember buying one of my little girls a balloon and I can, I'm actually not choking up.
Although that wouldn't be weird these days.
It's just raging allergies.
But I can also remember holding one of my little girls while the other one stood next to me watching the parade come around Main Street.
We were in Town Square, and we were watching the parade come around
and watching my little girls wave to the princesses, and they believed it, man.
Like, that wasn't a character.
That was the princess, man.
That was Cinderella.
That was Sleeping Beauty.
They believed it.
And one of my little girls said, she waved at me.
And I've never forgotten it.
We have a picture of it.
It is near and dear.
And there are so many little things, little moments that you can have and do
that aren't related to the hustle and bustle of a park day.
Although you can definitely look back fondly on that too, I do.
But some of these little tiny things, the little moments,
in my opinion, life is made up of the moments.
And you can have a lot of those here.
There's a show coming up over there.
I'm not sure what it is.
But I'm going to wrap it up.
