Starting point is 00:01:18 I call it a sequel because, well, you'll see. You'll see why. Let's walk through the entrance here at Epcot underneath Spaceship Earth. Good timing. Good timing. If standing with StarWars makes more quillian, find a lot that really is within you. It inspires us to lead with tripdocity, unlock all imagination, and explore new horizons. Tonight, as we gather together under the glow of Spaceship Earth,
Starting point is 00:02:20 our sparks ignite the magic to create a beacon, shining out and celebrating 50 years of the most magical place on earth. The most magical place on earth. Alright, that felt like kind of a little throwback, didn't it? Back to the 50th when they first started the beacons. Where are we? Can you tell? Alright, walking under the breezeway here, Spaceship Earth. I'm going to head down to World Showcase for a special reason. Just be patient. I promise it'll be worth it. All right, I'm going to take radio silence for a minute, a couple minutes, while we walk around World Showcase. Just close your eyes. Imagine where we're at. As we're walking through all the
Starting point is 00:04:29 tiny bubbles being blown by the children in strollers swallowing the soap bubbles. It's part of every experience at the Walt Disney World Resort. Yeah, close your eyes, enjoy as we walk you around Epcot. I I am, I am the champion I'm gonna kill you I'm gonna kill you

Just to see if you're keeping up with us, we're currently crossing the bridge over to France, making our way around to the American Adventure, which is where we will find our surprise. Come on.
Starting point is 00:11:35 Come on. Come on. Come on. A park? Oh, you want to buy this book? We can do that. I'm sure you can tell, oh you want to buy this i'm sure you can tell but it's busy
Starting point is 00:12:10 everyone's getting in their last minute food and wine festival as it comes to a wrap here pretty soon I think you're talking to Alcina. Yeah, I think so. I got one pie. Thank you. It is very peoply. We're getting drinks and uh... So much. Do you think all these people are here for Boyz II Men? No Boyz II Men isn't your surprise. It's better. Hey, let's pop in for a little bit of American adventure. America did not exist. Four centuries of work, bloodshed, loneliness, and fear created this land. We built America, and the process made us Americans. A new breed, rooted in all races, stained and tinted with all colors.
Starting point is 00:14:31 A seeming ethnic anarchy. Then, in a little time, we became more alike than we were different. A new society. Not great, but fitted by our very thoughts for greatness. Um, excuse me, Mr. Twain. What's that? Perhaps you recognize those inspiring words from one of America's great writers. No, Dr. Franklin, I don't recall writing anything like that.
Starting point is 00:14:59 Oh, my, of course not. They're from the pen of John Steinbeck, back in the 20th century. Why, it seems he has nearly the same spirit as the Founding Fathers themselves. Well, this is the proud of the statesmen. Mr. Cain, pride is one of our natural classics. Even those who overcome it are proud of their humility. Easy now. I was born nice. Fortunately, we're all. Dr. Franklin, it's our genuine word of indeed. I suppose our story begins with you.
Starting point is 00:15:39 Actually, it started long before even my time. It started when dreams and visions of a new world were shrouded in the myths and legends of an old day. Finally, through those early mists of uncertainty, sailed the first great adventurers. This tiny ship is the Mayflower, carrying pilgrims in search of their dream, a dream of religious freedom. So, if you'll pardon an old man's pride, to me, this is the beginning of the American adventure. American Adventure The fierce storms will race. A lot will keep mates. Our King Neptune will face. You'd think that these land lovers never would last.
Starting point is 00:16:52 This cargo of pilgrims, well, we'd fall amassed. It's land home, we hearties, at last we've arrived. And praise be to God, near they all have survived. But a look o'er this wilderness brings me to dread, That the first bitter winter may leave all more dead. They call themselves pilgrims, these poor wretched souls, with a
Starting point is 00:17:30 dream to be free in the new world they're going. Yes, far from welcoming their early settlers, this land severely challenged them. It was a struggle for survival that gained but a tiny toehold in a vast, untamed wilderness. In the decades
Starting point is 00:17:54 that followed, a new challenge began to emerge. We were growing more and more apart from the mother country. Passion began to govern, and she never governs wisely. Ha! The British think it fools we be. If they tax our trade, then our life be next, and soon all else be possessed. Hear me now. You ask defense against the French and the Indians.
Starting point is 00:18:22 Should you not help pay for it? Parliament's colonial policy is both arbitrary and unjust. That's nonsense. The same tea that costs you three jules a pound costs us six. First, we spoke out with our voices. Then, we spoke out with action, with a growing defiance that led to the Boston Tea Party.
Starting point is 00:18:46 Hear ye! Hear ye! By royal proclamation, His Majesty King George III, hereby sets... Look at this! They're closing the harbour! But surely we can work something out. Our king feels we've wronged him. Your king, you tory! Either we cut the ties with England, or we surrender our liberty! Finally, the time had come to speak with one voice, in a declaration of independence.
Starting point is 00:19:18 Ah, good evening, Mr. Jefferson. Have you finished the new draft yet? Those are new drafts all over the floor, Dr. Franklin. It seems one stroke of this pen brings two changes from Congress. I told you John Adams should have written this. Oh, by his own admission, you can write circles around him. Mr. Adams has not been prisoner in this loft for 17 days. I shall continue tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:19:48 You must continue now. Thomas, it is difficult to make 13 clocks chime at the same time. But we must carefully justify the separation. Dr. Franklin, while you slept soundly through the meeting this afternoon, we did manage to justify separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights,
Starting point is 00:20:22 that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And to secure these rights, he governed. The days of 1776, my boys, we never must revere that every man... Starting point is 00:21:17 Flying high Flying high America flying high America you must keep dreaming now dreaming the promise now of your pioneers America you need your flying high
Starting point is 00:21:42 keep your spirit free. Face it differently. And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world, ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man. I have a dream this afternoon that the brotherhood of man will become a reality in this day, with this faith. We're going to be down in two and a half. We're going to have to do that.
Starting point is 00:22:32 Forward, forward, just into the right row. Contact right. Okay, engine stop. We're coming in down, Eagle. You're in quality, baby. We're in here. The Eagle and the Lightning. Howdy there, here. Stand by for alignment. I don't want to be any younger. I'm not taking it. Okay, so there's a little bit of Boyz II Men, but that's not the surprise.
Starting point is 00:23:33 Here's the surprise. Hi, surprise. Hi, travelers. It's me, Michelle. I'm at Epcot. Not Disneyland. Not Disneyland. It's West Coast on the East Coast coast that's what i'm talking about that's the sequel right there michelle why are you here food one mostly food no wine actually
Starting point is 00:23:57 and running running oh yeah i did run what like 13.1 miles or something like that? Yes, we both did the Muppet 5K, which is the only reason I would have done it anyway. There weren't enough Muppets on the course for my liking, but it was great. We had a good time. And then Michelle ran some more, did the half. By choice, I guess. I probably should have just done the 5K. But there weren't any Muppets, so what's the point, right?
Starting point is 00:24:28 But there ended up being a Muppet on the... There was a Muppet. There was a Muppet on the half marathon. Sweetums was on both. Sweetums was there, and he was hanging out, having a good time, and they were playing Rainbow Connection for an entire mile, which was great. Unless you run a slow mile, then it's probably not great.
Starting point is 00:24:47 Now, last time we did this together, we were in your neck of the woods now we're in mine what uh what are i know you you have some some childhood memories of epcot right no uh or stories stories you have childhood stories of epcot uh yeah my grandparents came came here the first year Epcot opened. They're both huge travelers, so coming here and kind of seeing the countries all at once was a huge deal for my grandpa, especially. I have a bunch of old photos and slides and whatnot, so I could kind of see Epcotcot from the beginning to now which is kind of just pretty cool like what is your favorite attraction here oh my favorite attraction
Starting point is 00:25:33 living with the land hands down uh there's something about getting in a boat and becoming one with the land i don't know are you just are you just saying that because you're part of this podcast? No, no. Oh, that is why you're part of this podcast. She's wearing a Living With The Land shirt right now. No, my first trip out, Living With The Land, like, blew my mind. The fact that you're able to take something as simple as, like, agriculture and turn it into an experience just blows my mind. Did you ever get to do it when it had
Starting point is 00:26:08 a live spieler person? No, my first trip was in 2013 and that was way gone by then. It did have all the Disney attractions that had a live host spiel person.
Starting point is 00:26:24 I feel like when they took those away, it kind of, that's like part of the change that Disney went through. It's like taking away all the personality. I don't know. But living in the land, you can't go wrong with that. With or without a live person. It's great.
Starting point is 00:26:43 You want to go ride? And then sometimes you get stuck on the exit, and you get the pan flute. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. You can jam out for a bit. Yeah, we should go ride. Let's go. All right, we're going to go to the land.
Starting point is 00:26:55 We're going to live with the land. Enough of this chat. We're going to get this West Coaster some East Coast vibes. Welcome to a voyage of discovery and awareness, of the richness, the diversity, the often surprising nature of living with the land. Our journey begins as dramatic and sudden changes are sweeping over the land. The approaching storm may seem violent and tank to be pumped into the tank. The water is then pumped into the tank to be pumped into the tank. The water is then pumped into the tank to be pumped into the tank. Starting point is 00:30:22 The water is then pumped into the tank to be pumped into the tank. Beneath the surface of the land, rivers subtract water from the conventional, downstream, and the skid fields of middle. These elements, which are like a sunlight, create the first living systems is the rainforest, home to the most amazing looking fencing of life on Earth's planet. These dense and beautiful forests cover only a tiny portion of Earth's surface. But they contain more than half of its health and family features. Rainforests are also truly great for the preventive living systems, providing us with oxygen, food, medicines, and other elements that centralize our lives. In the desert, nature has created a very different, no less beautiful living system. And while this arid landscape may seem lifeless, it is very much alive. The plants and animals that have learned to survive in these harsh conditions make use of what little water they can find and avoid the scorching rays of the relentless sun.
Starting point is 00:32:18 The American prairie once appeared as desolate as the desert, but over time rainwater and nutrients gradually penetrated the hard surface of this land. Even the hooves of the mighty buffalo helped create the rich soil that would one day become home to the American farm. The Of all the forces at work on the land, humans have had one of the most profound effects. The need to produce food for a growing world led to the enormous use, and sometimes overuse, of the land. In our search for more efficient ways to grow food, we often fail to realize the impact of our methods. Today, we're learning to live with the land, discovering better ways to grow food that will assure both human and environmental well-being. In Japan, we're learning that by mixing leaves and other living materials into our soil, we can make farmland more fertile without the need for chemicals. Here at Epcot, we're learning to reduce the need for chemical pesticides by breeding and
Starting point is 00:34:33 using natural predators, like ladybugs and wasps, to control pests. In the farmlands across America, we're learning that by plowing under vegetation containing natural fertilizers, we can enrich the soil without the use of chemicals. In arid regions, we're learning to produce food on desert seacoasts by developing and planting crops. Will we meet tomorrow's growing needs for food production, yet still respect the needs of the land? Some of the answers are being discovered just ahead.
Starting point is 00:35:07 To help us maintain these carefully controlled ecosystems, and for your safety, please remain seated in your bunk at all times. Speaking of which, this master of dual-duty is a really fantastic fellow. With science and development, and the planet. Many of these, like papaya, bananas, cacao, coffee and rice, are
Starting point is 00:35:46 well known around the world. These are just a few of the edible plants that have been an important source of nutrition for people living in the tropics. Many are rich in vitamins and minerals, while others are well adapted to growing in less than ideal conditions. Some, like the water lily, thrive in wet swampy areas and waterways. All parts of this plant, even the flower petals, are edible. The starchy root of the plant has long been used to make flour for baking. One day, many of these lesser-known tropical plants may be as important as the bananas growing on both sides of the boat.
Starting point is 00:36:33 More than 28 billion tons of bananas are eaten annually, making it the most popular fruit in the world. When we mention farming, you probably don't think of fish, but fish farming, or aquaculture, accounts for nearly half of all the seafood consumed globally. Tilapia, bass, and catfish, like the ones you see here, are three of the more popular crops raised by fish farmers. The sustainable system we're using here recycles the water in the tanks. As a result, we're able to save millions of gallons each year. Our small fish farm produces nearly 5,000 pounds of fish each year to serve our restaurants around Walt Disney World.
Starting point is 00:37:29 In inventions like fishing, we can plane a football on Mount Everest to review the incredible harvest, but still perfect natural resources. The train is now departing for the next station. While there are more than 50,000 edible plant species in the world, most of us are only familiar with a handful that make up our everyday diet. The common grains growing here, wheat, maize, sorbo, and millet, plus rice, account for nearly two-thirds of our global food consumption. Learning how to increase yields of these staples is an important goal of research around the world. These plants are definitely on their way up. Innovative growing techniques like these increase yields while more efficiently using resources like water, fertilizer and pesticides. Another innovation at work here is our integrated pest management program.
Starting point is 00:38:56 By populating our greenhouses with beneficial insects that prey on harmful pests like aphids and flies, we are significantly reducing our reliance on conventional pesticides. We're growing these crops using our nutrient film system. This technique precisely controls and recycles water and nutrients. With it, we can produce over 27,000 heads of lettuce a year in this one small area. Some of our best ideas have been inspired by nature, like these fruit and vegetable trees. By growing these ground plants vertically, we can increase yields and better control
Starting point is 00:39:38 diseases. These crops taste as good as they look. In fact, we serve more than 15 tons of produce from our greenhouses and restaurants here at the land every year. The future of agriculture may include innovative ideas like this vertical growing system. Plants grown in this way use a fraction of the space required by traditional growing methods. That saves water and increases production. The aquaponics system on your left combines hydroponics with aquaculture. The fish provide a natural source of fertilizer for the plants and the plants help keep the water clean for the fish. It's another great way to produce more while using less. In our lab, Epcot scientists are working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture on a number
Starting point is 00:40:31 of innovative projects. The goal of these efforts is to produce higher-yielding and better-quality plants. The greenhouses represent just a fraction of the work being done worldwide to produce felt harvests for our growing population. Scientists, farmers, and even backyard gardeners are doing their part to improve the quality and quality of foods that we all rely upon. Together, we can continue to find more ways to increase food production and protect a precious natural environment.
