Starting point is 00:00:08 Hello, travelers, welcome back to Walk About the World. We have a podcast that takes you for an audio walk-and-talk with a friend around the parks and resorts of Walt Disney World in Disneyland and California. Each week we record live in the parks, and we bring you the best sounds, the best auditory journey, everything that the parks have to offer, that you can hear, everything from the music, the ambience,
Starting point is 00:00:37 the attractions, the magical meltdowns, trash cans. It's all here. And we love it all. If you enjoy what we bring you each week, we are listener-supported, so feel free to show us your appreciation by clicking on the Dole Whip Fund. There's a link in the show notes that will allow you to donate as much or as little as you'd like.
Starting point is 00:00:58 Buy us a Dole Whip, a mouse-shaped treat. Mostly just helps us to keep on doing what we love to do as we bring you all around with us to the parks. and resorts of Walt Disney World. Speaking of listeners, it's a good segue. Come on. You have a special guest today. Someone who happens to be in town and that I snagged and coaxed into being a guest host today.
Starting point is 00:01:35 Who are you? And what are you doing? I am Kristen. You can find me on Instagram. I am Park Hop with Poppet. and I'm here hanging out with you taking a walk around Pandora. Yay! Yay for guest hosts! Really, she just thought that I was coming to bring her some artwork that she bought, but...
Starting point is 00:01:58 Ha-ha, I'm very sneaky. You are. Very sneaky. So, we're at Animal Kingdom. That said, we're in Pandora. What were we just talking about about Pandora? in terms of what's going on. We're talking about how we wish that it was open at night still.
Starting point is 00:02:20 The parks usually close around six. Occasionally you might get an 8 o'clock night, but it's still typically light out. So unless you're coming in January or February, you don't get to see all the bioluminescence that they paid a ton of money on. And all the glow-in-the-dark paint all over the sidewalks. We were just noticing that,
Starting point is 00:02:44 The, what are these things called? Do they have names? The weird pond animals. They're actually spitting water again. They don't look very great, but they're still spitting water, which is nice. I think they need a paint job, and they're growing plants. Evolving. Evolution on Pandora.
Starting point is 00:03:23 It's weird because I, I love Animal Kingdom, but I rarely come to Pandora unless I'm going to eat. Yeah, same. I either come if I have a fast pass for Navi River journey or to go to Satuli Canteen and get some food. Other than that, I don't come over here anymore either. We don't have a fast pass for either of those rides, but I'm waiting line because there's AC in there, right? There is. It is a very warm, very balmy, 91 degrees, humid, But the sun's going down-ish. There's a nice little breeze. It's bearable.
Starting point is 00:04:07 Yeah, the little fake waterfall at the top is rolling away. The forced perspective waterfall. Also, I have to say all of the parks look a little different ever since the winter with all of the tree loss and vegetation loss. Like, there is a very noticeable difference in every single park. They're doing their best. They really are. I'm trying to bring them back, but...
Starting point is 00:04:36 I am. This is the reason I want to hand you the mic. Because it's nice because we're here all the time. You're not here all the time. I am not here. So you get to see all these changes with fresh eyes that we just kind of ignore. We're gonna walk over to the Navi small world. It says 30 now.
Starting point is 00:05:05 30 now. I'm sure it's a Disney 30. We'll see the Shaman songs. Hopefully. She was out the other one. Doing her thing. Na'iwa. Maewa. Ma'iwa. All right, let's head into Navi River Journey. So you get to experience it as a local, with a local. Standing in lines like a poor person. Like a poor person. But you miss a lot if you don't see the normal cue. It's true. Not necessarily in this one. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:00 There's definitely some rides that the normal cue is a lot better than the fact. All right, there's your earworm for the rest of the day. Kristen, before I hand it over to you officially, I know, sorry, I'm going to make you do it. We've got to get your perspective, so, you know. But before I do that, the last time we saw each other was a very sad occasion. Yeah. in that the Muppets were leaving us. But now they've returned.
Starting point is 00:10:58 How do you feel? I'm excited. I've at least been over to that section over by the new Muppet Rock and Roller Coaster. My only issue with it is I can't ride it. I am one of those people who get sick on roller coasters, so unfortunately I can't actually experience the ride. But at least once I'll pay for a fast pass to go through the queue.
Starting point is 00:11:23 Yeah. Yeah, that's exactly, we've had that very conversation, and that is exactly why I was both thrilled and pretty upset at the fact that they decided to bring the back Muppets, but do it in a way that not everyone can experience. And that is kind of crappy, but, you know, you want to say better Muppets than no Bumpets. It's true, that's true. But, yeah, if it was something that, like, who little kids could enjoy, like, we need the little kids to keep the Muppets going, because...
Starting point is 00:11:52 They're the future. Yeah. Yeah. The little Muppets. I know. The Muppet babies, if you will. The Muppet babies. All right.
Starting point is 00:12:02 With that, I'm handing it over to you. Oh, no. So, it falls in your court. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you a walk about the world with our guest host. Kristen. So first, I'd like to point out that I was just expecting to pick up artwork today. So technically, I paid money to be suckered into doing this. You're welcome.
Starting point is 00:12:28 So since I'm having to do this, you have to play these Pandora drums. I can do that. Let's try and do the Phil Collins. So here, give me the last line before the drone. There you go. You got it. Close enough. And it echoes, which is like. The wait time over at the safari is only about 10 minutes.
Starting point is 00:13:04 So I think we might head that way. I see what you're doing. You're just trying to get out of talking. You're going to let the guy do all the talking. That's cheating, but I'll allow it. It works. Do you remember when Pandora opened and, like, everybody needed a photo on this bridge that goes from one section to right under the floating island?
Starting point is 00:13:23 This is, like, the hot photo spot. This and the moss wall. Moss wall is a big thing. Whatever happened, people loved all the Instagram walls. Yeah, like the bubble gum wall. The purple wall. Yeah. Then they try to jazz up the purple wall.
Starting point is 00:13:41 Baby ducks. Baby Pandoran ducks. Over in front of Situly canteen and Pongu Pongu, where you can get Limpia. Have you seen the Joe Rodey dog tags? Maybe, maybe not. There are dog tags hiding underneath the overhang for Pongo Pongo. And if you look hard enough at all the different faces on these dog tags, Joe Rody is one of them. Look at that.
Starting point is 00:14:43 I feel like that's a big thing with podcasts now, though, is also filming them. And a lot of people mostly just watching the video. And that's why we gave in to at least doing TikTok. So I play with the TikTok machine now and then. That's the extent of it for us. Pete does his live videos. Yes. That's kind of our version of that.
Starting point is 00:15:13 I had the most embarrassing experience. with a wilderness explorer here once. I went up when Pandora first opened and tried to get my stickers for the land in my little wilderness explorer book. And they showed me a pine cone and asked me what it was, and I very enthusiastically said it was an acorn
Starting point is 00:15:35 knowing it was a pine cone. She was very generous with me, though, and was like, nope, do you want to try that again? Close enough. Here's a sticker. Do you think that counts as a hidden Mickey? It might. It might.
Starting point is 00:16:20 Coming into the port of Karambay. I'll take a picture to see the other one thing. There you go. Back to you. Oh, thank you. He's rolling. Oh, yes. So we just took the bridge over from Pandora. We're coming in the back way to Africa.
Starting point is 00:16:40 Where do those stairs go? They go up. Yes, they do. That's the way Mr. Mutumbo is wonderful fishing. Pumbo's wonderful fishing tours. It is. And that's the way to Club 33. Yeah, we probably have a better chance at going on the Pumbos fishing tours, quite honestly.
Starting point is 00:17:08 I think if we saved our money for the rest of our lives, we might be able to go once. Maybe. Speak all of these. Oh, boy. How do you, it's, it's, um, Swahili language signs again, but this time for seafood. All right. Let's hear it. Do this one with a Boston accent.
Starting point is 00:17:37 Of course you want me to do lobster. Lobsta. I'd say, Cambamiti, maybe. I'm probably putting the wrong and fastest on the wrong syllable, but crab is easy. That's just ca. Pepe?
Starting point is 00:17:57 Oh, Kamba Wadogo. It's a prawn. Yeah, that's a prawn. Fish. Is Samach. Squid. Puisa. Pueza.
Starting point is 00:18:10 Pueza, give me squid. 20 minutes from park closed, so it's very chill over here. Super quiet. Festival of the Lion King hasn't done a show in about an hour and a half. Best show on property? Best show on property, I think.
Starting point is 00:18:54 Tie between that and Nemo. Sure. Nemo's great, too. I like puppets. That's fair. Telly Buradica. beds, fresh water, upstairs in the old square. The beds are clean.
Starting point is 00:19:10 I think the band Buradika works at the island. They're the housebeds. Or maybe there's a one who founded. Either way, they're awesome. I like when they play, you can call me out. We have that recording.
Starting point is 00:20:12 Jeremy's singing all the words. Read some more. Okay, so the elephant is Tembo. D giraffe is Twiga. line is Simba, obviously. We have a 10-minute line for the safari. Zebra is, oh, boy, Punda Milia, and Rhino is Kifaru.
Starting point is 00:20:43 Oh gosh, there's more hippo. Kiboko, Cheetah's Duma. Ostrich is mbuni. Booney. I like that. I think the safari office is probably my favorite part of this. for kids. Kilimanjara safaris, the finest photo safari in East Africa.
Starting point is 00:21:23 We offer daily tours in the Harambe Wildlife Reserve. 800 square miles of river, forest and rugged bush country filled with magnificent wild animals. You'll bounce along with custom-built safari vehicles, a wide-open tempo tracks, bringing you closer to Africa's amazing wildlife than you ever thought possible. Discover the sights, the sounds of leaping and Pentalodes, charging hippos and majestic elephants. Not to mention lions, crocs, bongos, wildebeest and more. Don't know a bongo from a baboon?
Starting point is 00:21:57 Hakuna matata. A handy animal spotting chart located on the back of every seat is there to help you out. So join us at Kilimanjari Safarei's for the experience of a life. When it comes to safaris, we go wild. Thank you for calling Santisana. You can actually see Little Red now. They put her in the back at the Caring for Giants Tour. So you can see her back there.
Starting point is 00:22:28 And whenever you are in the reserve at nights, listen for the Lions rule, which can be heard from as far away as six miles. Lions may sleep for up to 18 hours a day. I like the new video that's in the queue, but I do miss the old video that had Dr. Shackaloo from Grandma's boy. Wasn't Warden Wilson From my name is Earl? I think so
Starting point is 00:22:57 How funny Boney Who needs a safari? Two bunnies! You got Disney bunnies. One time I was doing one of the Wild Africa treks here It's the backstage tour of the Safari and during our tour
Starting point is 00:23:24 Our tour guide actually told us that they found out that a rabbit got into the Cheetah enclosure once They found out in the morning when the cheetah had read all over their mouth. No. Please note to the horse legs and be in each row of the zone. Each row can comfortably seat for adults. Children may be seated next to or on the lap of their parents or company.
Starting point is 00:23:48 For your own safety, always remain seated during a safari. You ever had a safari vehicle to you sell? No. No. We have just children here today? Yes. All right, well you have. And if nobody joins you,
Starting point is 00:24:04 Yes, yes, a private safari. Sweet. Jumpo, everyone. And welcome to Kilmangero Safari. Thank you very much. You're welcome. You're welcome. You should know that the on the main roads
Starting point is 00:24:14 of the Haramai Wildlife Reserve Yes, you're going to welcome. Welcome, it's O'Hia. Welcome on board. Who are my friends on the right hand said? Watch those hands. Who are my friends on the right hand, legs?
Starting point is 00:24:33 I was going to be sliding closed. Asante Sana Warden. Gordon that means thank you very much it's a healing here in Harambe we like to say to one day which means let's go Jamba friends my name is Yassai and I'm a new year safari tour guide here in the Harambe Wildlife Reserve now before we get into the reserve just a few quick safety points make sure to remain seated at all times giving those hands arms feet and legs inside of the truck of the entire Safari hold on tight to any of these articles as well as
Starting point is 00:25:07 the reskentia a little bit bumping and I would If you guys to lose anything, now that it is a private safari, would you guys want the normal safari experience? Would you want just be interested in kitchen? Something special. Yeah. Oh boy. There's no pressure. Literally the least amount of pressure ever.
Starting point is 00:25:28 Well, we're going to be starting our amazing safari in the Little Eturi Forest. We're going to want to keep our eyes built for these animals. Keep companies are sometimes not to be related to zebra as usually those. Zebras are usually those stripes on their legs, but they're actually closely related to the giraffe. The left-hand side kind of pour the back down. You'll be able to see a saddle-filled stork. Saddle-filled storks are the tallest bird in the prairie forest. They're going to be around fine feet tall. With that height comes an impressive wingspan of around them feet wide, which is about the wood of this trip's canopy right
Starting point is 00:26:03 above your heads. And looks at me how many special little visitor. You can see bongo on the right hand side. Pongos are going to have those vertical white stripes to help them camouflage with the sun's face. Looks like all the way on top of the hill on the left-hand side, you also will be able to see a black rhinoceros kind of camouflaging with the rocks. Black rhinos are going to have those pointed ears. That's going to help them with their not-so-great eyesight. Sometimes to help them with that eyesight, they're going to be joined by a bird friend known as the Red-Billed Augsbecker. Red-Build Oxbecker sits on the back of the black rhino and alerted of any predators nearby. Let did the rhino know? Hey, I think it's time we
Starting point is 00:26:47 get out of here. All right, Hanson, I do you have to be able to see some kudu as well as some more bongos. The greater kudu are going to have those vertical white stripes, and they are a very social species of antelope. They have been seen in single gender herds of around 10 or less. That's going to be quite different than the bongo. The bongo is a very social species of antelope. They have been seen in single. going to be a very shy and reclusive species of Antelope, burning its very own nickname, The Ghost of the Force. We'll see some amazing semi-a-wantantoms. On the right inside, you're going to be able to see some pink-back pelicans.
Starting point is 00:27:59 Now they get their name due to the pink coloration they get on their backs during mating season. That coloration also spreads on over to their peaks. It's going to give them these slight appearance they are belushing and not. You just find them to be adorable. also of the hunt can't hide Garcia Nile hippopotamus Nile hippos
Starting point is 00:28:20 can secrete a red liquid from their skin commonly known as Bloodswain Impos is known as a float known as a Beesong Honestly I would recommend Hucking it up as that is the only way of I can truly describe it
Starting point is 00:28:42 But what's really cool is that no two hippos share the same beeson Just like no two humans are going to share the same lap Now it seems like a perfect time for Desaias of Latin lesson of the day. Today's word is hippopotamus. Aphabotumus in Latin means a river horse. That's very fitting as well.
Starting point is 00:29:02 If they are underneath the water, they aren't swimming but rather walking or running along the bottom of the river. Hand side, you might be able to see a tiny. Sometimes all they need is trees begin to open up. That means that we're getting close to the savannah. Now speaking of trees on the right hand side, you'll be able to see a Beobot tree. Beobab trees are known as Upside down trees, too, their branches, their trunks are massive. Those trunks can store hundreds of thousands of gallons of water in them. And since a lot, I should during time,
Starting point is 00:30:26 free of life, which is a pretty cool nickname if you ask me. Personally, I would have gone with Robert but really a big way in fuller. Welcome to us into the Savannah, where we're going to be able to see some amazing animals. Whoa! In plain sight. Take on the right hand side, at first you're going to be able to see some spring bar. They can actually jump 9 to 13 feet in the air with an ability to do that's prucking.
Starting point is 00:31:09 You can also see those egg folding cattle which you were able to hear as we're heading into the savannah on the right hand side. They're going to have those great big beautiful horns on their heads. Those horns can grow to be around 6 to 8 feet in length from the tip to the tip. The dinner's not. Them, I don't know why, but I was genuinely shocked. I don't think they just, you don't expect them to make that noise. Oh, that's fantastic. You can also see some wildebeests on the right-hand side as well.
Starting point is 00:31:49 Will the beast have set plans in their lips? It's going to help them track and follow each other. It's going to help them out greatly as they can find great. There's your friends. Perfect timing. African-fated dogs running around. running around. They're gonna have splotches on their coat. That's how they're going to be able to identify themselves. So no two painted doctors are going to look the same. One of the most successful predators due to their amazing collaboration skills and strong endurance.
Starting point is 00:32:21 Have you ever heard a giraffe move? No. I have a ton. Is that what they actually like sheep? Really? Yeah. I've never heard that. Next have you had to do for the largest species of antelope on the race. Antelope on the reserve. I'm about 630. Did you want me to do another? Josiah, we said make it special. You did good. Now you might hear that clicking sound of its walking.
Starting point is 00:34:17 That's actually the sound of its kneecaps, pretty much sliding back into place after every step. And that stick it was playing with is a favorite toy on the reserve. It is very special seeing them actually play with that stick. Can't sign as well. It's fabulous. It's now worth. or the group up the side. They're 20 feet tall, which makes them taller than this truck.
Starting point is 00:35:06 They get about 30 minutes of deep sleep with it. And if you wonder what else they do with their free time, well, they live up to eat. They can actually eat probably 20 hours a day. Hey, the rums are up out front. I'm walking through the queue. You're waiting to keep. I guess we'll with a picture or want the tan shirt,
Starting point is 00:35:28 but I have more than just a picture. I think of elephants can have up to 100,000 muscles in their trucks. That's going to be more muscles than we have in our entire human body. Those trunks are going to be used for the other. Various things like eating, drinking, saying hello to each other, and trumpeting, which is that iconic elephant sound that we all know and love. Do they still have the baboons in there? The mantles? Yeah, they're still there. Okay. They come, they're like in and out all day. It's weird. It's been a while since I've seen them. Oh yeah. You have to be like right at the right time.
Starting point is 00:36:19 for them to be out. There was a couple of, two or three days ago, the little ones too, I saw, like smaller than the big, the normal big guy. The small ones are actually the females. Oh, okay. Male manholes grow to be about 100 pounds,
Starting point is 00:36:33 and female manas grow to be about like 25. Okay. Yeah, usually I only see the male. Okay. Because of the time people think that the females are the babies. Yeah. But no, that is just an adult, female, macelle.
Starting point is 00:36:49 Okay, make it real special and make the, make the bridge move. It gave us a nice tiny drum roll to an amazing nature feature. That's gonna be Red Clef. They love to eat Red Clef. It has it as a bunch of essential nemo. The test marks on the right hand side and footprints on the left. We might be able to see some more.
Starting point is 00:37:36 This is a patriarchal animal. Beating then they're heard. They're led by a dominant female. Females are also going to be a lot more social than the most. lot more social than the males often being seen in groups of around three or more. All the males are gonna receive. Very important aspects of any environment together as they promote a lot of biodiversity. They also help to provide animals with food, shelter, and you'll never guess this, but even water.
Starting point is 00:38:37 It's fabulous, flam. Now one from Wingo's Nash, they are gray or white in color, and they'll get that beautiful coloration from the Bahraian strip that they eat. More specifically the beta carrot and then all found within the bright trip. Oh, we'll forget that. Moreness is a gorgeous color. Pretty into my name. Say it again? My favorite hidden Mickey.
Starting point is 00:39:09 Oh, yeah. There's also another one that we are nearby. Really? I'll try pointing it out here. I haven't seen it myself, but I have been told that it's seen somewhere near you. I believe it would be on this rock is going to be carved right by it, but I think it looked by it. That one or the rock right next to it, but I believe it was that one. Refers.
Starting point is 00:39:42 Reference. We're going to be able to see some white rhinoceros. A group of rhinos is known as a crush. White rhinos actually get their name due to a mis-translation of the Afrikaans word of fight. Fight means wide and not white. Then you get it because of their wide jaws, which are going to be perfect for helping them. Raise in the savannah. They're going to roll around and cover themselves in it.
Starting point is 00:40:16 It's going to act as a way of them putting on their own favorite sunscreen. Think of it as a rhino's attempt to give themselves a nice little swad eggs. When we're entering big cap territory, because I kind of made that sunlight. They had to see a cheetah. Cheetahs are going to have those spots all over their bodies. The spots underneath their eyes are going to actively have their sunglasses. This is going to help them with redirecting the clear of the sun away from their eyes.
Starting point is 00:40:55 If you're wondering how they can communicate, they can actually chirp and hurt like a house cat can. Girls are going to utilize those gorgeous long tails of theirs as a way to communicate their emotions. Because we get close to the coke can be able to see an African lion. Of course, we're simply a female line known as a lioness. Simply a lion around. Now African lions love laying on these rock formations known as coopies. In fact, they love it so much that they can spend 16 to 20 hours a day on the island. That's gonna leave close of their hunting to be gone to them at nighttime their vision is six times stronger and that at the human's ice cycle
Starting point is 00:41:49 Another great example of how girls continue to hit around the world is that these female lines are gonna go out of time Well the male lines are going to stay back and protect their young I'm gonna come back and she's giving you her good angle We love it thank you know We might be able to see some warthogs. See some on the left-hand side. Whart hogs have two sets of tusks. One set's going to be used as a way to help them dig those burrows.
Starting point is 00:42:47 And the other thing is just a self-depress. So sorry, but that. You know to see the waterbook on the large amounts of water that they drink. I like to remember that because of their heart-shaped noses. Yeah, I'm sitting on the log for a... The lodger's on the right hand side. Each one of the water is on the right hand side. One of those eggs are going to weigh about as much as a beaker's dozen of chicken eggs.
Starting point is 00:43:34 Those shells are also so strong that you can stand on top of them, and they will not break. We're now getting close to the warden's post. The warden is responsible for making sure, though, the animals are on the reserve. So, an amazing adventures out there are out there out with the reserve. But we can see by their setup that we found a way to live with nature and animals in harmony. But we're working against it, and we can do the same. Doing things like getting bird feeders from local mercuries to help attract sex. Because all know, it can be a little bit of these awareness for these animals.
Starting point is 00:44:44 Simply talking about them is an awesome way. If you want to see some more animals, there is the Discovery Island Obesis where you might be able to see the lesser flucking goats, kangaroos, wallabies, galapagos, tortoises, and a shark catfish goes by the name of Burris. Run back to you, Peres is actually one of the Arras. original cast members of the Animal Kingdom. He has been around since park opened. We are beginning to feel for the village of Arambe.
Starting point is 00:45:35 Sadly, that does mean that our time together. This Paranabe, we're way too final and just not for us. So instead, we say Guaharini, which means to go well. Oh, Guaharini, friends. Quaharini. Go wild, go out there, and have an amazing rest of the day. You go out there and make it their great. and go out there and keep being you.
Starting point is 00:46:06 Once again, my name is Josiah, and it has been in honor having you to join me on this gorgeous, gorgeous evening on the loiter today. That's two weeks. That was probably one of the better safaris I've ever been on. Private tools a party. Yeah, those are the best. It's so quiet in here after clothes.
Starting point is 00:46:41 That's when you get the best sounds. Did you see Rafiki when you came in? Rufiki was handing out pamphlets at the front. at the front, like park maps when I walked in. I'm glad they kept him after they canned his job. I know. Thanks a lot, Bluey. The last couple times I've come in at this time in the evening, it's been Kevin.
Starting point is 00:47:14 Kevin's been up at the front. They're wheeling something out for YouTube, hidden behind some foliage. They brought out the temporary blockade. That was a whole YouTube topiary. We have it in a big event. After your park place. Oh, we have to go to the ship. Oh, they block it all.
Starting point is 00:48:16 Go through Asia. I'm not letting us. I think they might be filming something. Have you tried this viral ice cream sandwich? Not yet. No, neither have I? They closed at a weird hour. Oh, okay. So by the time I get here, it'll have to be something I do the summer.
Starting point is 00:48:55 Yeah. And I'm sure I will. Do you enjoy a good ice cream? Oh, I do. I think I might try to pick up one before I leave this week. Covee brownie ice cream, sandwich. Looks really good. Carrot cake sundae, sounds good too.
Starting point is 00:49:30 What are those? Tamarins. Cotton tops. They're so cute. Since we're pronouncing things. Give us this one. Cotton top tamarin. Oh boy.
