Starting point is 00:00:27 Because we have your number. Hello, everyone. Welcome to War with a Mate with me, James. And me, Andy. This is the podcast in which I waste my time here with Andy playing a game that is a bad game. Badly designed, takes a long time to finish No one's ever finished it before And for good bloody reason So salty
Starting point is 00:01:06 It's incredible really What a bad game Tell you what Andy Can you rattle off any other games no one's finished before You're not a fan of Monopoly People finish that all the time So this is worse That's not how that works
Starting point is 00:01:24 That is the metric right everest takes a long time to finish and it's it's hard to endure and i before anyone got up to the top of everest i bet everybody said it was the worst mountain no why are you it was i think a holy mountain well aside from that for climbing it's definitely one of the worst it's not yeah definitely two is the worst mountain in the world for climbing is it a holy mountain it's in the himalayas so maybe well i don't know i know the ins and outs of holy mountains andy this is what they call a straw man argument yeah i know it's an ineffective one yeah you're making a straw man argument no no no no no that's not what's happening here
Starting point is 00:02:10 you're attacking me personally that's not a straw man and i don't like it it's an ad hominem attack Because it's about things that are real about you. No, no, no, no. Yes. This is all opinion-based. You're biased. Okay. Still not a straw man.
Starting point is 00:02:26 Whoa, and a hypocrite. No. I'll throw filibuster out here all day, every day if I need to. If that's what it takes to get through this godforsaken game. How was today? Filibuster slows things down. You really rattled today, didn't you? You had a bad time.
Starting point is 00:02:46 I didn't enjoy a whole lot of what happened today. Fair enough. The game, in essence, bad. My experience, a reflection of that. Because you couldn't do one thing. I don't like it when I try to do something in the game and there's rules that prohibit that. And I forgot about those rules because I'm too busy
Starting point is 00:03:06 trying to make plans with the other fucking rules. It's not the game's fault. Well, if the game was a bit simpler, this wouldn't happen. so i'm putting this entirely down to the game should we talk about what happened bro yeah in 1978 spi decided to piss me off that's what happened crikey in the past they had bad intentions no towards me personally absolutely not and i don't know why delusional narcissism because i wasn't born by then so why would anyone care about you exactly what a spiteful thing to do when i hadn't even been born yet jesus christ i would never do that to anybody who hadn't been born yet
Starting point is 00:03:45 this is definitely going to upset people who haven't been born yet no it won't they're not going to listen to this although we have had i guess i mean they'll be 30 by the time we finish they might go back and get the bat car look i feel like it'll be it'll be wiped from the internet by then no when ai becomes all obsessed with the game and it's like oh i can beat the game people can't then it'll it'll take some sort of soft spot for it and and from there the whole podcast ruined anyone would like us no they wouldn't they wouldn't like what i'm doing they wouldn't like my attitude towards the game maybe like this human he's doing exactly what the people do well i don't like your attitude towards the game all right ai andy fine you're such a big ai stan so we were
Starting point is 00:04:32 doing my movement in combat yeah and five upstage three yeah we were last upstage of the penultimate turn and it was and then we start the whole thing this is not on i'm you know what this is half my podcast as well and i'm going to spend my half being angry at the game you're welcome to do what you want to do on that side. For no reason. For no reason. Right, so to start with, we had four fights right off the bat. We did, we did.
Starting point is 00:05:05 I got the sixth team from the sixth Australian to pincer your second black shirt. That hurt. That hurt. They took a fair few losses out in the desert. I put them there, so I suppose that's fair game. That was a decision
Starting point is 00:05:21 that I made. That was of my own volition. I put them out there. It was risky. Fine. First fight went pretty well for me. I pincered them below a hill, a slope. Yeah, yeah. That one, what was the loss on that? 25
Starting point is 00:05:37 on that? 25 and you had to retreat one hex. Yes. But you retreated three? Retreated two to make sure I was out of the zone of control. Yeah. And then you...
Starting point is 00:05:53 Did you go for them again? They got hit twice? Yeah, because the Sith followed them because they ended up one hex away. Yeah, so they got hit again. And surrendered. Yes, they surrendered entirely. Now again, that was a choice I made. I put them out there.
Starting point is 00:06:09 That was risky business. I accept that. That is the cost of war. I put my pawn out there, and, well, I guess it was more of a pawn. Kind of like a bishop. I put my bishop out there. Pretty fair, yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:24 And my bishop was taken. And what that did do, the bishop did spend time keeping your guys over on map D. Yeah. The more time you spend on map D, the more time I feel like I'm not losing. That's fair. I kind of guess I feel that way
Starting point is 00:06:40 if you were ever having to spend time on map D. Yeah. So that felt like a psychological win. I've had you spend a lot more time on map D dealing with my guys than we've had to spend my guys dealing with you on map B. so I'm pleased with that that Fawcett, okay
Starting point is 00:06:58 pretty good they had to surrender, fair enough, but I did delay you a bit ate up a lot of your cohesion or CPA at the very least probably a bit of cohesion I reckon as well by the time you for those guys the Sith
Starting point is 00:07:13 spent cohesion in the end but it was cohesion they just gained so they essentially got no cohesion from doing that okay no disorganization from from the back of that no uh just because the first fight yeah you knocked them back twice yeah so okay so that works out and then you decided on the back of that that they would uh move on elsewhere they stayed there they oh yes it was the other guys and then whereas map c uh the seventh fought their long-term enemies the
Starting point is 00:07:53 63rd no the 65th serene were up at the yes the malady the malady that's right yes they've been they've had i've been half a dozen fights with at this point they've been locked in with them for a while and today was no different they've done an actually really good job of keeping the 7th pinned. Yeah, the Mileti have been doing a good job. They started off as one of my better divisions. I can't really describe them as that now. They took a few more licks. I don't think
Starting point is 00:08:23 they took crazy damage. I don't think it was like 50 or anything wild. I think it might have been 30 or 40. And then you retreated with them as well, so they didn't get the extra bump in losses. Yeah, I thought it would be prudent to move them back instead. So they've moved one
Starting point is 00:08:39 hex to the west. So they've still got that buffer where you'll have to enter their zone of control again if you want to go past them so they're still doing their job of keeping you at bay yep their numbers are dwindling after all these fights 30 on 40 on 30 that starts to add up yeah so they aren't in a very strong position anymore in terms of men and toe strength but we'll take that that that is what they're actually there for they are there to be chewed up and spat out how's that cohesion because that's also the like are they going to surrender or... It's not particularly healthy.
Starting point is 00:09:13 Right, it's pretty bad or... For some of them, it's double digits now. Okay. But I guess it's down to the top levels of their sort of fairly alright. Yeah, they've not been too bad. The thing is, a lot of their cohesion drop has come from the attacks,
Starting point is 00:09:29 so that applies to the highest level. So it's gonna come down to the wire soon. They had a little bit of pause time where they were left alone for like an op stage, so that took off some. Yeah. So they're not, like, are they borderline surrender-y? They are, I think now they are in surrender territory.
Starting point is 00:09:49 Right. In fact, they might have even been just, I don't know, I think they were in surrender territory this time around, they just didn't hit it. Are they the ones you said were minus nine, Cohesion? No, that was the second. Right. Oh, and then they got to 12.
Starting point is 00:10:08 Then they got to 12. Yeah. And then they surrendered. yeah that's that was a that was a shame a whole division well definitely not whole division but a division and then the 63rd serene were attacked on the coastline well not the coastline quite no the escarpment line yeah they got on the north they were they were engaged from last time so they had the fourth indian and the second new zealand pincering them and the only place for them to go was down the escarpment and they were battered with an attack first time around they
Starting point is 00:10:45 just ate the attack took some losses they took a pretty heavy loss i think they took 50 and then didn't move so i think they took 60 and they're like first yeah 60 off the bat but a lot of that was the second yes and second time around they took a another battering which i think was a bit less maybe 40 something like that yeah it was definitely less than 50 fairly big but not like the same yeah and this time i decided i would i would take the retreat okay well yeah i'm saying okay like i didn't know that yeah this isn't a revelation i took the retreat down the escarpment and i detached as part of that my recon unit from the 63rd i then as part of my plan decided to as part of that retreat, have them
Starting point is 00:11:37 dart up to your supply dump. Have them advance. And the thing is, they're actually moving away from the majority of your men with that move. Yeah. So, on paper, that seems fine. That seems sensible.
Starting point is 00:11:53 The issue is, with the retreat rules, you have to go to the nearest supply dump. That's yours. That's mine? You have to head towards supply dump or city, I guess. But yeah. Yeah, nearest supply dump or city. and that meant because i have another supply dump there the one i built a while ago that's done nothing except be blown up constantly and occasionally have drabs of trucks going to
Starting point is 00:12:16 reinforce a tank regiment that is now defunct so that it's great that that's there to scupper my later plan and you might be thinking well james you put it there and and i mean i don't want to be there and i'm in charge of my men why can't i tell them where to fucking go i wanted them to go a little bit further east it's only like another five hexes it's quite a long way to go on a retreat well you know that's what a retreat is it's going away if you look up the definition of retreat i bet it says going away and nothing else but the game oh no the game wouldn't have that the game had to get into the granular detail it wouldn't just have a two-word response going away in in the oxford dictionary i better just say is that under retreat
Starting point is 00:13:09 but no no no not in spi is the campaign for north africa the desert war all of my life is the fucking time scale and on that subheading so it's crazy that this has set you off this badly like it's a it's genuinely insane well like of everything that's happened this is by far the angriest you've ever been and it doesn't make any sense to me that's kind of it though isn't it Andy after everything that's happened it was
Starting point is 00:13:37 fucking coming at some point wasn't it I guess the straw that broke the camel's back was yeah not being able to aggressively retreat because I just thought well that works for me so it would have been nice if that would have worked
Starting point is 00:13:53 I would have quite enjoyed that because my retreat would have taken me to Sidi Barani Again, take four or five hexes to the east, and you had a supply dump and some trucks there. I could have done with those. It would have stopped your supplies a little bit, and I would have had Sidi Barani for a little bit longer. That would have been fun. That would have been good.
Starting point is 00:14:11 The rules prohibit that. So they didn't go there. They are instead wasting their fucking time at supply dump one, doing nothing at all. I'll tell you what they will be doing, Andy. Dying. because they'll either get bombarded from your navy that's cool, or
Starting point is 00:14:28 you'll come along and you'll crush them with a division that you've got there. Also cool two thumbs up. Fuck me, that's bad I don't like that alright, I don't want to be in a situation where my men are stuck down there when I don't want them to be there Okay
Starting point is 00:14:43 Okay, fine That sucks I guess it does, yes I guess it's a bad situation for you When people ask what the worst part about this game is I'm probably just going to say all of it Just the whole thing Right, okay
Starting point is 00:15:03 Because you've been fairly positive recently A bit like an overrun unit I'm going to round up I'm going to round up my losses to just say Well, the whole experience That's a Just a genuinely horrible attitude Yeah, maybe so
Starting point is 00:15:19 I'm doing it, aren't I? I'm playing the game yeah I don't need to be happy about playing the game I said I would play the game I didn't say I'd be doing it with a chipper attitude and a smile on my face it'd be nice
Starting point is 00:15:34 it would, that would be lovely that would be swell if we could have a lovely positive experience with it that would be brilliant and you know what, some days I would dare to say I do okay good but if we're being candid
Starting point is 00:15:50 today i didn't because you were fine and then you just couldn't do that one thing you were just so pissed off yes just i've got a threshold of frustration andy and this is apparently it okay this is apparently it but sylvie i guess you can counter that by the fact we've been making a rules mistake in your favor for quite a while oh brilliant yes there we go i forgot about that as well that's another thing um i guess that hasn't come into play too much on uh on a being a negative for you however we did indeed we missed a rule this is great this will perk me right up so we made a rules mistake that we've been doing the whole time and that rules mistake is that if the
Starting point is 00:16:40 the raw strength points of the attacker is more than double or defender or defend i guess whichever side if one side has double the raw strength points then it moves the column well it must be the attacker because it moves the column two columns to the left to the right rather yeah so if you're if you're more than double the size in raw strength the column moves two to the right which means for all of these situations where i've got my guys who are just kind of piddling along and and holding down a line of defense with very few men it means they are going to be taking a bigger hit now today there were only uh two instances where i wasn't in the 17 plus etc column so that is the the highest it can go so if they're getting that already before the rules
Starting point is 00:17:28 mistake i guess it doesn't really matter well that's after the first one we realized that yeah i guess so but it probably would have fallen more or less the same so i guess so oh well not to worry it's all really bad okay it seemed like you had a plan you seemed fairly positive
Starting point is 00:17:53 before we started recording you had a blip in the middle a blip in the middle? yeah that blip was, that's my day ruined that's my week over why? why let it do that?
Starting point is 00:18:08 because i'm i'm allowing it to how about that the game has stronger willpower than i do look at that this thing's had stopping power for 50 years no one's finished it i'm not the best i'm not going to be able to to hold my frustration in for this whole thing if i don't vent this out occasionally i'm going to burn the thing fair enough don't burn it well I can't promise anything please promise that if it behaves itself then maybe I'll just smash something else up in your rage room
Starting point is 00:18:42 gotta stop this you've been talking about rage rooming in here as well for like weeks well maybe that's a sign we were talking about it not while we were playing this that's a good point but you were talking about that while we were doing something
Starting point is 00:19:02 you enjoy Yeah, we were playing D&D, and I thought, you know... I want to smash up his shit. A little bit. So that's fun. I don't know, maybe this room just now has an aura of discontent. That's coming from your poisoning the room's aura. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:18 Okay. So I shouldn't be expected to also have the antidote. If I am the poison, you should be the milk. You should be the base to balance it out. The milk? Yeah, I'm the acidic undertone. you should be the base you should be the PH7
Starting point is 00:19:35 I'm on like a 2 okay I guess I feel like I need to not be the base I need to be the opposite of that so it levels out oh like alkali no I think a base is probably the best way to go okay
Starting point is 00:19:52 like if you got like some strong acid and you're like oh I've drank some strong acid you don't then drink alkali you drink milk okay i don't think that don't take that as medical advice anyone if you accidentally drink some acid don't fix it with milk well yeah first port of call just to put it out there for the audience see a medical professional see your your you know your center for poison control or whatever the but if that's close head to the nearest dairy farm yeah if you have a cow
Starting point is 00:20:26 by chance then that's probably the next best call or following that one of the emergency services that are open like the lifeguards are near like a ton of water i'll probably help they're looking for something to do yeah most of the time you know they're not busy i presume you said lifeguards right not coast guard i think so yeah they to be fair we did um we did on our trip not too long ago, we did try to name 25 emergency services. Yeah, that didn't go well. I think one of them was DJs.
Starting point is 00:21:03 Yeah, it was. And I think a separate one was wedding DJs. Yeah, because we ran out of actual emergency services after the five real ones. I think there's like seven or eight real ones. Maybe, I don't know. Locksmiths, that's one. Not one. That's an emergency service.
Starting point is 00:21:19 No, it isn't. Alright, you're locked at your house. You need to get in very quickly. It's an emergency. who are you calling? The police. Then that is, I think, a crime. The fire brigade. It depends on what context you're locked
Starting point is 00:21:35 inside or outside your house. Mountain rescue. Given you live in an urban area, I don't think you can even get them to come out. My street's on a slight, very slight incline. It's actually not a very slight, it's quite a big incline.
Starting point is 00:21:51 Yeah. But I'm also inclined to think they still wouldn't show up. oh well worth a try yeah so you've got some plans for next term yeah i've got some plans for next you actually delayed this one so you could plan yeah because i i have a plan in the immediate and it all revolves around cutting off your supply line and some parts of what i was going to do are still valid this part i'm not too bothered about because i had plans and i accepted that a lot of them could change because of mass loss of men that i was fine with that i am fine with because that's something that i planned with the rules of the game and it all worked out
Starting point is 00:22:27 if i've made a bad decision that's fine if i've made a decision based on some of the rules and it turns out there's even more rules in there that prohibit it then that's really annoying and i'm i'm just a guy i can't remember all of the rules that's fine it's not it's not when it Not when it spoils my plans, it's not. It's a goddamn game. All its rules. Why couldn't they just make it shorter? Or make it a different game?
Starting point is 00:23:03 Then I wouldn't be doing this. No, we wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't this game. It could be doing something better. No, we couldn't. You know what? We had someone, didn't we, fairly recently email and ask you know when it comes to the frustration with the game do you feel like you lean into it more or embellish it check my blood pressure check my blood pressure no i believe you're annoyed
Starting point is 00:23:31 have a little look see i don't want to because all i see is fucking red gotta chill man oh you know after this i gotta go home you gotta go to bed so i guess i'm looking forward to that there you go find the silver lining i'll sleep it off hey it'll be happening again next week but hopefully next week next week you'll be in charge of moving stuff and I'll be the one
Starting point is 00:23:59 Andy I was in charge of moving something this time and that's what went wrong I spent a week planning this and it was all based on a lie oh the entire week was the not all of it but all through this week I've been planning and this I planned was this retreat move
Starting point is 00:24:13 because I knew that they would be pushed into a retreat at some point on that escarpment and i needed to figure out what units have the cpa to move which would be the best ones to send and how to get them over there and it transpires you can't do that so it feels like i've wasted not just that that moment there but part of my week as well coming up with a plan okay i can that that explains some of the frustration well justifies it a bit more i don't often strategize as hard as i have this week so to strategize harder than usual only to find out spending more time means i missed more rules it's not a nice feeling at all okay that's fair
Starting point is 00:24:56 there we go should we get some listener mail to take your mind off this buddy yeah let's let's see what the other people are saying at least at least the fans are nice they don't so please don't direct your ire towards them i'm not they're nice okay good they're nice so i'm hoping that what we've got here is just going to be some some positive mail yeah that'll be good okay do you want to do yours first or fly i'll read out this one from jack okay we've got an email here from jack jack says hi james and andy i just wanted to complain about your common ground oh okay oh i should have read a different email i just wanted to complain about your common ground on the word peace in corporate language i hate it and it has irreparably corrupted the way i listen
Starting point is 00:25:48 to corporate briefs at the time i first heard the common ground a couple of months ago i thought nothing of it i didn't really get what you were on about however i've just spent the last two days sitting in unimaginably generic corporate meetings where people have continuously said let's take a quick look at the x piece and now it's driving me insane please help how can i unhear the common ground and go back to my previous state of blissful ignorance best jack this was you did this to me as well because when you were doing the actual common ground i think i didn't push back very much and i started noticing it at work as well so uh i'd like a way to remove that i'm sorry jack and i think today is a day of regret for all of us apart from andy for some reason and he's been quite glib it's
Starting point is 00:26:35 one of his traits but i i feel you jack it's something that bothers me all the time i don't like i don't like corporate speak not when it's not not when it's it's not for broad purposes with peace it's it's talking about a specific thing you just don't have a word you could just say let's have a quick look at x yeah let's talk about leave the peace off the end let's talk about compliance yeah but they were going over compliance or the compliance policy yeah something like that the compliance meeting presentation it's not a piece no so don't don't give me that i guess if you do want to try and remove it maybe play the episode that common ground backwards and it'll write it out of your head there's no way to know yeah you could stairway to heaven it if you play
Starting point is 00:27:20 backwards maybe there's another message in there one that's more positive that would be insane because we didn't do that. Maybe by the same merit, if you play this one backwards... It's more negative somehow. Yeah, maybe it just gets denser like a collapsing star until there's a singularity
Starting point is 00:27:38 at which the game does catch fire through completely unsuspicious means. Maybe. I don't know. But, Jack, I feel you. It's a shame, and I'm sorry I put that out there, but I needed people to validate me and you have, and thank you.
Starting point is 00:27:55 This is not just an accountability tool as a podcast for us playing the game. I guess it also is there to just make me feel validated and vindicated and being angry at things. Slight? I've just had someone agree that when I'm in meetings, that I should be annoyed. I'm just
Starting point is 00:28:11 sorry that I had to spread that negativity, Jack. And I hope your meetings go a bit smoother forward. I hope they don't say peace anymore, but they probably don't listen to this. That's all we can do, because... We don't have the power to change the agenda of your meetings but if i could by god i would actually you know what if you want to make things much worse give us your boss's email and we'll get in touch with them and he's a dab hand at doxing
Starting point is 00:28:35 people by accident so we can probably pull something off yeah if anyone has any other work related terms that annoy them by the way let us know that would be a fun one let's go over more angry corporate speech in our heads so badly i want to ruin my work life even more. I would like to frustrate myself more at my place of employment. Why not? Just looking to make every aspect of your life worse. I'm hoping
Starting point is 00:28:59 I can hit a critical mass of frustration where I just kind of tire myself out. Ah, the old going none solution. I'm hoping if I kind of go on a temper tantrum like a child, maybe I'll just need a nap afterwards and then I'll be okay. A nap,
Starting point is 00:29:15 some milk. I mean, I hope so. I hope you can sleep this off and it's not a permanent attitude it'd be unfortunate if this became a permanent fixture of my personality it would it would make this unbearable I don't know maybe that'll throw you off a little bit
Starting point is 00:29:30 I guess yeah I'm gonna be concerned about you instead of focusing on the game thank you for the email Jack yes thank you I've got another one in here from Jeff Jeff and Jack J's and we put James in there you got triple J what are the chances I mean we do pick them so
Starting point is 00:29:47 yeah we picked them out and I guess J names, you're not super uncommon. So I guess a chance. I don't know the odds, but I bet the game has rules for them. Anyway. Episode 73, Dr. Pepper. Greetings, y'all.
Starting point is 00:30:04 Jeff from Chicago, yet again. During episode 73, right before delving into the new Fruit Talk segment, there was a brief mention of Dr. Pepper. As you've likely never been to Waco, Texas, the home of dr pepper i feel obligated to share the best way to enjoy the beverage at the dr pepper museum in
Starting point is 00:30:25 waco they have an old-fashioned soda soda fountain where you can order a dr pepper float uh which is exactly what it sounds like root beer float made with dr pepper instead of root beef root beer i believe this is the ultimate form of enjoying dr pepper however it's so unknown that as a public service i've taken it upon myself to bring it up uh every possible occasion where it seems reasonable i strongly recommend trying one as always keep up the good work and stay subtle humble and brave jeff well jeff that's interesting because i i have had a a coca-cola float before but it was probably a good 15 or so years ago yeah you don't run into floats very often you probably have to go looking for one if you were getting one yeah i think some restaurants do them
Starting point is 00:31:14 um i think chain i think it is more of a more of a an american sort of approach towards having a float yeah putting ice cream in a drink yeah i mean i i've i had it like when i was younger and i don't think i've ever had one since and the amount of places i can think of where they do them come to think of them i think most of the chains i can think of are american in origin yeah and i can think of a place not far from here that does good breakfast they do them all right okay you know the place um and aside from that yeah i think when it comes to a dr pepper i i buy myself a nice cool can of dr pepper it's got the the cream swirl dr pepper now which i quite like yes that's good nice little spin on things which i guess is close
Starting point is 00:32:05 two yeah i guess it's probably the similar the dr pepper cream soda is fantastic and that that's a fairly recent addition to the mix and i think it is one of the us like import drinks yeah where the can is slightly bigger it's 355 milliliters which i think is 12 ounces could be wrong i think so off the top of my head. Eight or twelve. And they're good. I like those. Oh, good. So that's something. That's a positive. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:39 I'll cling on to that. Maybe it'll keep me afloat. Nice. But I don't know if it's that buoyant to contain my rage. Oh, good. Rage is dense. Should, if we ever go on an American tour, we'll go to the Doctor Pepper Museum. We will. We'll go to Texas, we'll get
Starting point is 00:32:55 afloat, and I'll be on Cloud 9. for now I'll just take the happy thoughts so I guess between a bit of vindication and a happy promise of a delicious
Starting point is 00:33:10 beverage at some point in the future maybe we'll make some let's do some Dr. Pepper floats for a for a game session one time. You mean that? Yeah, we'll wait till it's sunny and then we'll have a nice Dr. Pepper float
Starting point is 00:33:26 So we're not doing that for another year, because we missed the sun this year. It's already happened. The weekend of summer happened when we were at the Expo. Yeah, and we were indoors a lot. Yeah. Cool, so we missed that. That's fine. I guess just wait for something.
Starting point is 00:33:43 Some landmark event, and we'll have a Dr. Pepper float. Okay, we'll find a landmark event. But I guess for now, we'll just see how it pans out. Yeah. All right, well, that's something. that's something so thank you jack and jeff i feel it's it's nice to know that we we have we have listeners that pay attention to it and and sending things that we can we can take some solace in so for those who want to send anything in game related or not maybe something happy send a happy
Starting point is 00:34:12 one i'd love to because i'll get to that in in a few weeks or months time and maybe it'll be a bad day so if you want to send a happy email this is the week to do it are we leaving this in like where we get a lot of when we first started mentioning we had an email and people are like i've got up to this and you're begging for emails yeah it's another this is a landmark that i got up to oh let's be 81 something like that 80 episode 80 james needs a happy email yeah if you've got a happy thing to send a happy fact a fun anecdote maybe a a quirky pastime that you've got maybe a picture of a dog in some kind of outfit that makes it look like multiple dogs carrying
Starting point is 00:34:54 a box or something. That would be good. That is the best picture on the internet. I wouldn't mind that. So I'd send that in. Funny animal picture, that's a classic. Yep. Or any kind of meme. I like a meme. Maybe a silly one. Okay. Anything to do with Monsters, Inc. That's
Starting point is 00:35:10 good. Okay. Monsters, Inc.'s funny. Animals in costumes and Monsters, Inc. memes. That would be good. We're going to have no idea why we're getting sent these in, like, three months. Yeah, I will forget about this. but that's my call to action and the email address is info at warwithamate.co.uk
Starting point is 00:35:26 you can follow us on Instagram it's just warwithamate and dare I say we have a website which we will update at some point there is a web form on there if you want to use that to get in touch with us the email is much more reliable the web forms are being, we're sorting through them
Starting point is 00:35:43 we have a lot of we went through a batch of them a while ago but we've got some more Yeah. It's warwithamate.co.uk. You'll find it fairly easy. But the other stuff, best place to find us and keep up with updates. We did as well, last week, the week before, recently, we made a TikTok account. We're not too sure what we're going to do with it, but we thought we'd give it a go. Currently the only videos on it are half an hour long. Is that correct? yeah so yes the only videos available on there so far are the full live show of the the expo live show so if you want to see the full live performance bar five minutes that cut out because a phone died you can find that on our tiktok we're working on getting it over
Starting point is 00:36:30 to our youtube we're just having a bit of a a real hassle to be fair with the file size and it's It's compatibility with the devices we're using. We could only get it uploaded to TikTok from the phone that it was on. So you can find us, it's just War With A Mate on TikTok. So if you use that, that's where you can watch that.
Starting point is 00:36:50 And it will go up on the YouTube. That's where we want it, ideally. That is where the long-form content should go, not... Yes. I don't use TikTok, but it feels like we're doing it wrong. So we'll see how that goes. Definitely.
Starting point is 00:37:01 But if you want to find the full video of the live show, that's where you can find it for now. Yeah. and it's it's a jolly good time we we had a great time i think we might start we're planning to at least we have so many plans but we haven't fulfilled but there might be more stuff going up there yeah we'll we'll put up some stuff on there we need to figure out how we'll use that but maybe it'll be another plan we'll have work in progress for a little while and then it'll pay off as is most of this yeah so check that out and that is that's the mailbag checked out for now
Starting point is 00:37:32 that's it for for this week yeah thanks for those uh two emails great emails we appreciate them it makes us feel more worthwhile doing because without it i would it just it's it's just old man screaming a cloud yeah this feels like if people weren't sending stuff in engaging this would be the last episode yeah i feel like having having the live show speaking to some of the guys there and having people email in and and say that they they have fun listening to this i'm sorry the games annoyed me i apologize for the negativity i can't stop that you you want a candid experience of what it's like to play the campaign for north africa from
Starting point is 00:38:24 me a guy who doesn't play war games turns out one of the main emotions is frustration yeah it turns out rage is actually one of the things that you get from this game. But thankfully it's few and far between compared to how it used to be. Maybe that'll change when we get back into the full thing. But for now I
Starting point is 00:38:44 will try to behave. But that's that. Let's move back. Let's dial it all the way down from 11, where I am, to
Starting point is 00:39:00 a simpler time. A past time. A time of well, I guess a time of anything where being angry is probably a lot more justified. Yeah? Yeah. Yeah, I think so.
Starting point is 00:39:18 Let's go to the past. Let's do it. The men of the long-range desert patrols were quite a sight on their return to Cairo The contrast between the east and west of the Nile is very marked. In the east, the country at this point became a little thought to my future, but had always been interested in boats and the sea. I am more or less in the position of a cactus in command of a ship,
Starting point is 00:39:46 which is on the point of sinking because errors are present. We are absolutely not qualified to share views on history. So, Andy, where and when are we? we are going back to before world war one we saw how the uh the old ottomans got pulled into it uh we're gonna figure out what the italians were doing getting involved yeah what's going on with those tricksy guys yeah because they they kind of caused a big problem yeah so former five-time prime minister of italy who wasn't in power at the time but was still there giovanni gilotti had this to say referring to germany and austria frankly i'll confess to you that i would never
Starting point is 00:40:28 have believed that there could have been two governments that were so far out of their minds as to untake this monstrous war so lightheartedly so pretty anti-war from him but yeah which yeah there does seem to be weird amounts of anti-war sentiment coming from them throughout history but their actions don't really seem to track with no the pro-war parties tend to win out in these um just before we get into this one uh this one's another huge shout out to arrow who did an uh recording explaining some of the background of italy entering the war as well as germany and austria so uh yes use that for this one arrow sent in some some real good stuff some voice clips which uh for anonymity i believe arrow had uh distorted a bit yeah we were going to use them
Starting point is 00:41:14 at some stage but we thought you went to the effort to make sure it was you know hidden away and obfuscated if we played it so we thought maybe just a bit easier if we yeah because we'd have to slow it down and then that does the point of yeah so we've uh we've just decided to paraphrase a bit so uh still still kudos to you so uh the italian peninsula uh hadn't been under unified rule since the fall of the western roman empire in the sort of end of the fifth century and also the following ostrogoths owned uh most of it but rome and the center of italy will spend a lot of this thousand years uh owned by uh the papal states around rome when they were still a country you've got the north you get the venetian republic which will expand and contract um but that was a very
Starting point is 00:42:08 big one you got various sicilian kingdoms uh down south including the kingdom of two sicilies don't know why it was called that but the best of times the worst of times yeah um so yeah it's a collection of city-states by the time the renaissance rolled around you got your florences milans etc uh the hapsburgs and the holy roman empire owned the northern parts of it from around the 1500s and maintained some presence there until 1918. That's a
Starting point is 00:42:41 bit of a mainstay. Yeah. So, to figure out why Italy joined the war, we're going to have to have a quick look at Austria as well and the Habsburgs. Yeah, we heard a lot about them during the Ottoman section. Yes, historic enemy of the Ottomans,
Starting point is 00:42:57 although they will, both empires will cease to exist as allies at the end of World War I. I guess it just ceased to exist at all. Yeah, but I do think it's kind of funny that after hundreds of years of fighting, they do go down together. Yeah, it's not nice,
Starting point is 00:43:15 but it's a poetic ending. Yeah. So the Habsburgs start out as a very powerful house within the Holy Roman Empire, which is a whole thing we'll get into when we do this equivalent series in probably 10 years for the Germans. But basically, the relevant thing for us now is amongst their holdings
Starting point is 00:43:35 in the Holy Roman Empire, the Habsburgs own the Duchy of Austria. They get these lands in 1273 and expand the duchy more and more while retaining control. So when the Holy Roman Empire does start falling apart, the Habsburgs declare independence in 1804. As you do. Two years before the empire entirely dissolves, so they sort of get out just before the end.
Starting point is 00:44:01 Ah, they detach their units. Yes. And, yeah, declare the creation of the Austrian Empire. So, yeah, this is relevant because Italy's relationship with Austria is going to be a major factor in their decision to enter World War I. And the grievance dates back to the Napoleonic era. The Austrians are a major part of the seven coalitions
Starting point is 00:44:22 that were formed to stop Napoleon, which is also, don't know much about Napoleon, but that's insane. that seven European coalitions had to be formed to stop one guy. You'd feel quite proud of yourself at that point. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:37 I think he's also the only guy who has an era named after him. I think all the rest are like Renaissance, Middle Ages. I don't think there's any others that are like a guy's... Yeah, I guess in, you know, you've got the Victorian era, Dwardian. Completely, yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:54 Completely missed those parts. Yeah, so that's not a point. Doesn't matter. fairly contemporary history yeah thanks for that so most of uh most of italy does get conquered by napoleon as well as a fire chunk of europe uh so when he's beaten in 1815 they have a series of treaties to basically redraw uh the european maps many of the italian city states get reinstated including the papal uh states and one of the most important
Starting point is 00:45:26 post-Napoleon treaties is the Treaty of Venice, which is one of many. You get a lot of, I've noticed, you get your Treaties of Venises, our appointed our Treaties of Parises. I think I've run into a bunch of treaties in London. So you want to do your treaty in a nice city.
Starting point is 00:45:44 Yeah, that's a good point. You don't want to do your Treaty of Milton Keynes. You don't want to invite a bunch of... Ooh, big disrespect to Milton Keynes. I picked it because it didn't exist then. No, you didn't. No, I didn't. I don't have a love for Milton Keynes.
Starting point is 00:46:02 Unfortunately, I only know bad things about Milton Keynes. But this isn't a Milton Keynes history segment. That comes in five years. Yeah, we'll get to it. We'll get to everything. We'll get to everywhere's history segment. So it's in Venice. So it's being hosted by Austria-Hungary, Hungarian Empire.
Starting point is 00:46:21 and at the conference they decide uh we like this chunk of northern italy we've had for a couple hundred years so we're going to keep that and this is the kingdom of lomberto ventura but it includes venice milan the sona and padu so it's like major italian cities are now yeah austrian some big ones yeah so the italians are not happy about this at all and checks out once again as happened to the ottomans the austria austria hungarians are going to run into this rise of nationalism where it goes from where people start to be like we're italians just like the ottomans were dealing with like we're greeks we're serbs we're not ottoman it's yeah yeah so yeah the italians are starting to manifest like a national identity and over the next 50 years um there's this long
Starting point is 00:47:15 process called risorgamento which is basically the unification process um and that um ultimately the kingdom of sardinia sort of swallows the rest of italy and becomes the kingdom of italy on the 17th of march 1861 and it manages to get most of that land back off austria over these 50 years fighting wars so most of that region does rejoin italy as it becomes the kingdom of italy okay but the italians still have a grievance about this of like the time they had essentially in their minds their land stolen and there is a small area called trio um which is a country in the holy roman empire and once once even where the like house of hapsburgs like the actual house was was like their capital the emperor lived there for a bit oh okay for the holy roman empire at
Starting point is 00:48:12 various times but this region is across the alps at the north so the south side of it is in italy and the north side's in germany or austria okay with a bit of a mountain border yeah and it's primarily populated by italians to the south but not exclusively there's also a large german speaking population it's part of italy today but germany's still an official language there so it's sort of one of those border regions but basically italy thinks this region should be part of italy austro-hungary or like what are you talking about nationalities we have like hundreds of them in our empire why would we give them each a country yeah i i see where they're coming from with that in terms of keeping your empire together yeah yeah you want to keep an empire you can't you can't
Starting point is 00:48:59 start breaking it up that way it's not in the interest of your empire no and well also austria will get taken by hitler and anschluss because they're german speaking so they think it should be part of germany yeah they kind of get got by this as well oh i bet that one's done so you've got this underlying historic animosity uh which is then you've got to ask the question why are they part of a triple alliance with austria and germany well you could ask that about a lot of these alliances around this period because they don't seem to actually be alliances it's just paperwork yeah it's a lot of paperwork half of it's secret so like no one can make any plans on it yeah it's secret paperwork so no one has the paperwork no one knows it exists so it's
Starting point is 00:49:45 pointless and i guess if you don't want to honor it you could just put it in a bin because no one knows that you've made an agreement and if anyone calls you out on it so i don't know what he's talking about secret deal nah that wasn't me so they get brought into this by uh otto von bismarck who's probably is widely thought to be one of like the greatest european statesmen or politicians ever and kind of helps he sort of forms germany in a lot of ways and he manages to convince austria and italy to join a defensive alliance one of these is italy's worried about france um as it wants to expand into north africa as they'll continue to do up until miscellany yeah i mean that's part of what today was a big part of it yeah but this region is primarily owned by france
Starting point is 00:50:35 so italy wants uh if it does like have an issue with this superpower it wants some backing so it joins this but then you get the uh archie franfurs and gets got kicks off the gets got is a very gentle way to put it yeah um but that kicks off and italy when austria goes gives it that that untenable uh you know that untenable offer to serbia where they were like we're gonna take over your police and like arrest whoever we want yeah you guys can just do your thing but we will be invading your infrastructure and we'll be arresting people that we just feel like arresting not a wronging us because we're going to make it a crime to criticize us so serbia obviously said no and then uh austria went well then we're going to attack you which was the plan all along it was
Starting point is 00:51:32 meant to be yeah yeah they just justified it so italy italy goes well no we're in a defensive alliance you're clearly the aggressor we're not going to get we're not coming in on your side here so they they actually declare neutrality on the 2nd of august 1914 declaring neutrality is a fun one i am neutral and they're neutral for the first year of the war and they sort of have a similar situation to the ottomans in some ways where because they're neutral they're getting sort of better offers yeah on both sides but what ultimately wins them round is the triple entente promising italy control of south tyrol uh which is what wins them round the prime minister antonio salandra and the foreign minister sydney sonino bypass parliament entirely to sign a secret
Starting point is 00:52:27 treaty of london on april 26th and this is also like i've done two series on countries entering world war one and they both include the head of state going around the cabinet to facilitate war which is like so is that is that going to be true of everyone i look at that's just a pattern yeah which is a bad pattern um but and another part of that thinking of joining it is a quote from our friend victor emmanuel the third oh yes yeah i do not understand how we can possibly hope for a victory of the central powers austria itself is already a vassal of germany if the triple on tent is to triumph we would have to deal with free powers and we shall have some room maneuver if the central powers are a win we would be subject to german rule which is also part of
Starting point is 00:53:24 why they're not joining this because and it's this is also a correct analysis of them becoming allies with germany in world war ii they become a german vassal state so they got it right yeah just the wrong war that is that could be the the tagline for italy yeah they're even early and they're doing it for the wrong war or just well they shouldn't be doing it at all i guess is the other option just chill a bit italy so there's a lot of internal resistance to this war there's uh two factions being the neutralists and the interventionalists this is also the time uh Mussolini gets kicked out of the Socialist Party for being pro-war. So this is when he starts his, I guess you'd say, heel turn.
Starting point is 00:54:14 Yes, if he was in the ring. Yeah, although he probably wasn't a great guy beforehand either. I don't think you just switch that. I think you just, that's him. Yeah, this wasn't a 180. It's more like a seven degree turn. It's more of a, this socialism thing isn't making me personally powerful the way I want it to. What else can I?
Starting point is 00:54:32 yeah it's just changing the vertical in which you're being a bad guy i presume uh but ultimately the invention interventionists do win out after direct intervention from king emmanuel the third who among other things threatens to abdicate if the treaty of london isn't uh honored by the italian congress so it's like prime minister made a secret deal king is gonna step down if you don't honor it for fuck's sake um so this leads to italy declaring war on austria on the 23rd of may 1915 they'd wait till august 28th 1916 to declare war on germany um so now we've got the italians and the ottomans in world war one uh wonder how it's going to go for them wonder if it's going to set up grievances that will last a while i would imagine
Starting point is 00:55:22 this is probably just going to be a petering out and they'll they'll tire themselves out they'll have a nap and they'll sleep it off yeah yeah we'll find out uh but also as part of this time as well uh i forgot to mention austria is very much on the decline so it's also mirroring the ottomans a lot in terms of like you had a really good run but this is the end yeah this this really is the the eclipse of a lot of powers in europe yeah and then they all get kind of knocked down a peg or two which does set the stage for the 1930s well you lose the ottoman empire austro-hungary the russian empire falls or doesn't shape shift yeah um so yeah you lose i think there's seven great powers at the time and you lose three of them yeah i think losing nearly half of the great
Starting point is 00:56:16 powers it's understandable where some instability may come into play so yeah uh that's it for this one that's how italy uh not quite as twisting and turning as the ottomans but that's how they end up in a world war one and again just massive shout out to our for this thank you very much yes we uh we some of the stuff that we get sent in for the history segment bits the some are just suggestions of pieces of history that you folks are interested in and that you think will be interested in and those are awesome and then some are just so massively committed to the the production of it where we've received the equivalent of an essay yeah some research we've had propaganda sent in not active propaganda but former propaganda and that is just crazy
Starting point is 00:57:08 levels of effort to put in for for us to then look at and for our need to turn to history segments as well so thank you everyone who sent stuff in like that arrow especially for this one and if anyone else has some stuff to send in email info at warwithamate.co.uk and i'm sure it'll be churned up into a history segment at some point or at the very least we'll have a very good read of it but odds are since we've got another few decades at this it will probably be turned into history at some point yeah i'd be amazed if it weren't but that means all we can do now is create a little history of our own and given that i've been a little bit tightly wound today to say the least we now move into a segment designed specifically to try and diffuse that so andy it's over to
Starting point is 00:58:00 common ground and now for something nicer a little oasis in the war it's time for some common ground i'm trying to intro the common ground i'm recording common ground is the segment in which we'll pick a topic and we will discuss that topic and find that common ground find a place to agree on we alternate each week and picking that topic and andy this week you've picked the topic yes i have and i i just want to put it out there that today's anger isn't at you, it's at the game which means I'm not going to put the
Starting point is 00:58:47 onus on you to make the amends here. I'm going to be angry at the game regardless and you can't fix that. That's fine because I don't know if this is going to do that so it's good you prefaced this. So mine is, we need to
Starting point is 00:59:03 redesign planes slightly. Okay. Start off overhead bins in planes are a fucking mess. Overhead bin? Oh, you meant where you put your luggage. Yes. I thought you meant like rubbish. Which is
Starting point is 00:59:19 garbage. No, the overhead compartments. And also, that's part of my problem. You said that you put your luggage in. Because every plane is like, you have one big bag and then you have carry-on. But to save money everyone just brings the biggest possible
Starting point is 00:59:35 like rolly bag they can. they will fit and shoves it up ahead so my idea here is okay we're going to get rid of the overhead bins completely and then we're going to move
Starting point is 00:59:52 the floor of the plane up so you have more hold space and everyone just puts those bags in there as well so you have more room in the cabin and then it's the cargo bit now
Starting point is 01:00:06 in terms of my flight experience that would be better, that would be brilliant because that whole hassle, if you think about what the hassle is when you get on the plane it's not sitting in your seat it's getting to your seat and people like
Starting point is 01:00:23 just dicking around having bags they literally can't lift up yes too heavy or just awkward angles that you have to put them in because of how big they are yeah and you know just when you're trying to walk down the aisle when you first get on the plane and everybody and their dog is just trying to put a bag up on
Starting point is 01:00:46 the top and you're trying to scoot past someone's in front of you putting their bag up which means there's people behind you they're trying to push forward they've already got their bag off their shoulder and they're like holding it above their head for some reason yeah as if they need to like charge forward and slam it into this thing or the people like ripping it out when you land because i've been smashed in the head before by someone who's like i stood up immediately the second they like seatbelt things off and started like pulling the stuff out and like hit me with it and then i saw them standing at the fucking baggage claim waiting for their big bag so it's like you've just rushed this for no fucking reason and another issue as well is when it comes to
Starting point is 01:01:25 getting off the plane you have to wait for them to open the doors and then you have to go through customs and then you have to wait for your baggage so it's like why the why are you rushing yeah because when you are getting off the plane it's not like you're speeding up the process because at some point during this you will be waiting for the rest of the baggage to come around on the little carousel you either end up waiting for your baggage or you get slowed down at passport control and your bag's there yes exactly yeah so there is unless they're excited to be first at passport control which is i guess you know different strokes and all if that's the thing that excites you about travel then i guess find a different hobby you might find one more exciting
Starting point is 01:02:05 but if that's what you're going for then i guess i will still criticize you you've still made the flying experience worse because getting off the plane is more difficult when everybody is cramming to get their bag just wait yeah so i've got two because i was thinking if you raise it too much the side like window guy people might be like yes because it is kind of curved on the sides but what you can do i think is because you can't see out the middle window anyway is you like step up onto the middle seats so they're like slightly raised okay and then you've got all that space underneath and then people have the same amount of bags but there's more space on in the cabin i think because also they could like big bag and then put the little bags in between when they're loading
Starting point is 01:02:53 the cargo so it's like more efficient i guess i think some of that space i'm hoping will be given to things like maybe a fraction of leg room or the seats are slightly higher so people with like long legs don't have to cram well first of all andy i'm sorry to say but in regards to that last point no there'll just be more seats then there will just be more seats that i still think get the bags out the cabin i'm just yes an idealized version here as well that they will just put more seats in unfortunately and i guess this is from a standpoint that we can't answer because we do not have the know-how but is there going to be an issue with weight distribution if there's a lot more bags in the bottom of the plane i yeah i don't know because i don't know how much of it
Starting point is 01:03:46 Because my other option was I was going to do the plane slicing the other way. In what sense? So like all the passengers are at the front and then the back is cargo. That feels worse. Yeah. That feels like it. That feels like definitely aerodynamically bad. That feels like the plane can't take off anymore.
Starting point is 01:04:06 Yeah. So we're going with raising the cabin floor a bit. Yeah. I think definitely having a lot more weight evenly distributed on the bottom. Along the length, yeah. is better than put it all at the back yeah or the front that won't work yeah the front seems way worse but i think that you've described the worst iteration of this if it's all at the front yeah but i think when it comes to the aerodynamics of a plane um the weight distribution i feel like
Starting point is 01:04:35 having it on the bottom might be an issue possibly the second thing i can think of is the size of bags and suitcases i feel like at the moment the whole system is designed around fairly standardized baggage yeah so if you've now got that extra bag is it the same way you can just have what would be your carry-on bag same size that you also check in i think your other thing can fit under it should fit under the seat in front of you okay and then also you can make a decision i'm gonna take a smaller bag and have a bit more leg room okay so you will still be able to have a carry-on yes but not not a luggage yes it's like you can bring your handbag on or like a messenger bag or a rucksack that's not silly big like the kind of bag you would walk
Starting point is 01:05:26 around with yeah yeah like my so you've got my work bag here i know this is bad podcasting because people can't see it but this would be fine yeah this is a backpack i've got where you can carry a laptop, and it's got some room for other bits and pieces. And it's also not hard-shelled. It's not hard-shelled, no. Which I think is also part of it. Yes. Hard-shelled luggage in the overhead, hard no. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:05:48 Hard no. Mostly because of what you described earlier, where someone takes it out rapidly and it just clocks you on the head when you're trying to stand up from your seat. And no one needs that. No. I also don't want to be hit by a heavy rucksack, which is soft either, because they can
Starting point is 01:06:03 have a bit of weight to them. Yeah. but you don't want that no so i think the the essence of it i'm all there for i want a better flying experience and i think if you're gonna have that if you're gonna have a limit where the way people are trying to like get around it is worse than just like yeah even and then you can even be like have a small bag have a big bag or they just increase the bag yeah because you could have because why do you need that bag on the plane you never get any that's why you the bags you walk around with as it were like that can have like a book a laptop even like you can fit the stuff you'd need while you're in the plane because realistically what are you doing on a plane
Starting point is 01:06:53 how much stuff do you need when you're in this metal container going from a to b do you know a book a book maybe a tablet a tablet or watch a movie don't even need a you can't even really use a laptop unless you're in first class well that's the the space that you've got on a plane yeah you do not have the room to like you can have a laptop i guess like kind of sat on your knees yeah but i guess that's also depends on how tall you are because yeah i guess how tall you are you're tall yeah so that's i imagine cramped for you yeah and then as well as that just using a laptop on a plane it's just awkward yeah put a download a film onto your phone listen to some music listen to some podcasts maybe war with a mate i hear that's
Starting point is 01:07:39 good i hear one of the co-hosts is really angry today and that that seems like a good way to use your space but what what else are you carrying on in that bag that you need because if it's a medical bag it has its own thing yes there's this own system and i mean you could keep you keep some compartments at the back or the front for the stuff you actually need to take on, so like a baby bag, medical
Starting point is 01:08:06 bag, the bags you're going to use during the flight. Yeah, if it's a bag that I'm fortunate enough to not need medication so frequently that I need it on a plane, or any sort of medical apparatus, if I did, and this is
Starting point is 01:08:22 just the way that I work, I would want to have it right there available. so i would like a space for this small medical bag containing whatever it is that's vital for me to have on a plane i'd want that right there i don't want it in an overhead locker that requires some fumbling around and some locating in amongst somebody's duffel bag full of 15 different items of clothing that they have on the plane for some reason right there available seemingly shipping like those tungsten cubes for some reason yeah heavy bags what are you doing so i would like that medical bag to be readily available and i would like that for other people as well they
Starting point is 01:08:59 should have it right there so if they need it have the seats at the front they get a bit of leg room yes and then also you have the the rows in front of the exits yes i think you just have like a this bank of seats has lockers in front of it yes so if you do have like if you're flying with a child or something you can they'll put you put you there where you can have like a locker with a bag in it but it's like small areas of the plane and it's not everywhere yeah i like this because i don't i don't frequently fly i'm a bit of a bit of a house cat so i don't tend to travel a whole lot at all but especially not in planes but getting onto a plane you're already trapped in a metal cylinder for hours at a time depending on how long you meet like eight nine
Starting point is 01:09:51 hours and it's seeming everything about it brings out the worst in people from the airport experience to then being on the plane everyone's knackered it's just the time people are like really are their worst in a lot of ways so let's remove a lot of that and it's again crazy because it's it's that again that rush mentality where it's like i need to get somewhere faster and it's like well the plane is pretty scheduled yeah you're gonna have to wait for it to take off to land that's pretty uniform and when it comes to getting on and off the plane the airport's in charge of that yeah you don't have a say in how you can be at the front of the queue or the back of the queue but because all of it has a bracket and a bookend of passport control or the plane landing or taking
Starting point is 01:10:39 off you can't speed it up no so stop rushing around even the whole thing of people getting into board early i get it if you've got a disability if you can't stand it makes sense like standing is difficult you shouldn't have to queue or yeah like if you're elderly and inferred people where it's like you actually physically navigating it is is a difficulty then fair enough you shouldn't have to put up with the the absolute logistical nightmare of getting past these people with their bags but if it's just you get to pay to get on first why it yeah it's a weird because if we if we can fix this whole system then that doesn't matter anymore yeah because like that's why they i think i don't know if this is true or this is one of those like things i've picked up
Starting point is 01:11:23 but the reason they apparently put you on people in first class on first even though it would make sense to load the plane from back to front is so you have to walk past them and see what first class is like with people in it so as like a sales technique oh so they'll be like oh i wish i had that yeah oh i should have gone on first and gotten a first class yeah these people are relaxed walking you past the like better thing it's like but i i have a i have a distaste for stuff like that where it's like you're paying for the premium thing i'm sure the premium thing's better in a lot of ways but i think when you put it in my face i just hate it more yeah it does i just i become so disenchanted with it when it's so transparently like oh look at what you could have it makes me
Starting point is 01:12:11 want it less yeah i'm very contrarian in that nature also that seems like something i'd never want to do is upgrade unless i for some reason went into a completely different financial situation because i feel like once if you fly private a few times you would like not want to go back you'd have the like lifestyle equivalent uh inflation thing yeah so it's like i don't even want to well that's it we're not the celebrity on the couch we can't we can't afford that kind of stuff that guy could the residuals from that movie that he did paying dividends surely so that's fair enough but when you're when you're the everyman yeah and that's expensive as well flights are already you know pricey when it comes to first class i mean it's like a markup of like
Starting point is 01:12:58 three or four times the price it's insane for like long haul and it's like i think a first class to Australia is like 10 grand on certain airlines. Well, I saw a video on YouTube where I watched one of the ones where you leave it on autoplay and you just end up watching one. And it was a video of a guy
Starting point is 01:13:19 who bought the most expensive flight from one location to another and you get a bedroom. Oh, on the Emirates flight. It was Emirates, I think, yeah. It's like they've made a cruise ship. Yeah, you get a room. You get a little bedroom. You get a shower with
Starting point is 01:13:35 20 minutes of hot water you get like you get a tv in there yeah i don't think i could lie on a bed in a plane i don't yeah there's something just the the tilting of it like the feeling of the plane moving i would just i'd feel so so off i'm also not a big sleeper on planes or buses or whatever and it's not because i'm like cramped i can i can sleep on a very recently slept on a bus on the way back from the expo well i very recently didn't sleep on the bus having said that we'd been up until 3am waiting for the bus we'd been at bars during that time we'd had a live show where the i don't know about you but i had a bit of an adrenaline like surge and dump after the live show yeah i think all the excitement the build-up and then the well that's done i had a
Starting point is 01:14:24 few pints and then getting to the bus at 3am i was i was very very comfortable getting some shut-eye then yeah and with a plane i feel a similar thing where i don't i don't like to fly i just it in general freaks me out i don't like roller coasters because i don't like the idea of just being on something fast that's kind of out of control and by the same merit a plane is that but just really jumped up all the way here's another benefit actually for most people of the raising the floor of the plane slightly. Yeah. You'd have to raise the windows slightly as well.
Starting point is 01:14:58 So, people who don't like... You wouldn't have a view of the ground as much as you take off and land. I think they need that. I think the cabin crew need that for something. Because I'm pretty sure that's the reason you need to have the windows up when it's take off.
Starting point is 01:15:13 Oh, that's for hostages. That's for what? Hostages. Hostages? Yeah. For, like, the plane being hijacked. oh because if they're down it blocks sniper it's like a signal that something's wrong on the plane if they're down oh i didn't know that yeah because there was like a shitload of plane hijackings in like the 70s and 80s which never get talked about because oh i thought it was because i'm sure like i also by the way please correct us if i'm wrong but this is just a thing i've heard but i do think
Starting point is 01:15:45 it's something to do with, like, a signal that everything's fine or not. Oh, that's interesting. Because if they're down, yeah, people can move up and down the aisle who are, like, taking it over, hijacked it. Oh, I'll definitely look into that, then, because, yeah,
Starting point is 01:16:00 I thought it was something to do with cabin crew needing to see out, but I don't know, maybe I was told that when I was a kid or something. So they weren't. So they were like, oh, it's in case we get hijacked. And on the counter, maybe I got told that version, because someone was like, he's gonna chew now if it's just so they can see the floor yeah the first time i got on a plane i
Starting point is 01:16:22 was still fairly young and i mean i'm not even 30 yet so it wasn't too crazy long after 9 11 so i don't know if maybe they told a kid a gentler story or maybe just gave some generic information or maybe there is a different purpose but all in all when it comes to this common ground i'm with you i think leave it to the experts in terms of whether or not the weight distribution pans out but let's float the idea let's at least have an engineer look at this i think they should they should take a gander and i think looking at you know these these life or death weight distribution situations and uh and italy's folly maybe maybe it wasn't too bad today but it could have been a hell of a lot better could have been could it there's a lot of rules
Starting point is 01:17:11 in there, and I committed to playing the game, maybe I'll just have to read more of the fucking rules. Which is an unfortunate reality. But I am playing this forever. Yeah, so, gotta get used to it. So are you, Sunshine. There'll be a day. The day will come. You will have your bad day.
Starting point is 01:17:27 Oh yeah, it's definitely coming. And when it does, it'll be much worse, because I suppressed it for so long. Well, with that promise of a bad day, Andy, I shall keep my eye out. And he's bloody invoked it. There it is.
Starting point is 01:17:44 The Fruit Zone. Okay, what are we looking at? What's the Fruit Zone? Orange or Kiwi? Orange a hundred times over. Kiwi. Wrong. The Fruit Zone.
