What a nice way of humble bragging about something you can and convincing
Starting point is 00:00:41 everybody you can. Welcome to Was I in a Cult, guys. Yep, I'm Tyler Meesum. And I'm Liz Aykuzzi. And on our show we give those who were in cults or cultic environments a chance to tell their story and take their power back. And one of the intentions of this our show is to bring to light some of those cults that are a little less obvious, those who are hiding in the dark walls behind the dry wall of society. And of course by doing this show we have been exposed to a plethora of cults. Such a lovely word, plethora. And if you think you've heard it all, well, you haven't. Let's get into it, shall we? Please meet today's fabulous guest. I wanted to come on the show because I think there just needs to be more awareness in general
Starting point is 00:01:57 about control and all of the different weird ways that can show up. I think my experience is definitely not super typical, but I think more common than we think, right? I'm Camperano. I am a doctor of acupuncture in Chinese medicine and acupuncturist and I spent eight years in a new age spiritual cult. That was heavily influenced by Scientology. You heard that right everyone, not sure if you heard our dentist Scientology episode last season. And if you didn't didn't you should it's a doozy When we did that interview I thought that was the most bizarre Scientology related called I had heard of that is until I spoke with Kim You know what to say about dentist Scientologists? What? They're the only ones who know the tooth.
Starting point is 00:02:46 This is why he's an editor. Do not plant a flash? Oh, okay, I'm impressed. Actually, I'm pretty impressed. So I grew up in the East Bay, Northern California. My parents were like high school sweethearts. They're still together. It's kind of ridiculous. And I have a younger sister, so it's very typical like suburban, happy lifestyle. My parents, like we didn't grow up going to church or with any kind of religious anything,
Starting point is 00:03:16 so they were like, do whatever you want, explore. So my like first kind of experience with any sort of real like learning and spirituality was actually in Berkeley also when I was 18. So a friend and I were just driving through town and there was a little pop-up sign and said psychic fair today. So we're like, let's go. Now I know you don't like psychics, Tyler, but when you're 18 and look, there's a whole fair dedicated to people predicting your very bright future full of
Starting point is 00:03:45 infinite possibility. It's a fun way to kill a Saturday, right? Sure, but let me tell you why I don't like Psychic List. Okay, we'll get to that, but let's stick with the fair for now. Yeah, a psychic fair. What do you do? Right? A pony? Well, people read your oar. So you like did this grounding process and then you like tapped the other person across from you with their grounding cord and without it so you would like see the difference of like how somebody would kind of almost fall over when we didn't do it and when you did you didn't waver at all and then you could get readings from some of the students and teachers for like super cheap.
Starting point is 00:04:18 We had a lot of fun I was like this is fascinating yeah so Iook one or two classes at that point in time. At a place called the Berkeley Psychic Institute. So, pony rides? Oh, no pony rides, Tyler, no pony rides. Soon young Kim graduated high school and transferred to Cal State Long Beach, I did business management and then switched into art and did studio art and jewelry making. That was really fun except that wasn't a job I wanted to have to like be a bench jeweler, but ended up meeting a chiropractor who was practicing, calling himself a naturopath, which they're not supposed to do. And he gave this like presentation. It was like, the body's all connected, all these things are connected.
Starting point is 00:05:01 That was super interesting. And then I ended up going the thu, like thu, like thu, like thu, like the thu, thu, thu, th, thu, thu, thu, thu, thu, thu, thu, thu, thu, thu, thu, thu, th-a, th-a, thu, thi, th-a, th, th, th, th, to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to to to going to acupuncture school after that. And then I graduated acupuncture school in 2010 and opened up my own private practice. I worked in a really cute office in San Francisco. Acupuncture was just becoming more popular but not really that popular. And it was just always like scraping by. You know, I've been a fan of alternative medicine since before it was cool. Growing up I had a DO, do you know what that is? No, a dew. You had a hairdo. It's called a doctor of osteopath.
Starting point is 00:05:33 And he did acupuncture and he would heal me also. Do this like hands-on manipulation and I would be healed of all my injuries, like, and half the time of the old rice method. He did. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I've done acupuncture once. And it was fine.
Starting point is 00:05:49 It was nice and they stuck needles in me. And then I left. And the rest of the day I just felt a little weird, little strange. And that night, I reached in to my hair, and there was still a needle in my head. It kind of bent. So it was still in there, but it bent back. That's my worst fear. I had a needle. Another one may still be in there. I haven't checked. I would explain a lot. Yeah. Just slowly draining the blood from your head. They should count the needles going in and coming out. They're supposed to do that. Yes. Missed one. So Kim was just starting her own private acupuncture practice.
Starting point is 00:06:25 And then this woman also rented space there. She did like Reiki healing and hypnotherapy. And she was a person who introduced me to FSD. So she had told me about it. Because some of the language matched from what I had learned at Berkeley Psychic Institute. And she sent me the flyer like the invite to come and like looked into it and then set it aside and then it was like four years later or something where I was like really disenfranchised with being an acupuncturist. So she goes to her bottom drawer, digs for that flyer and reads the
Starting point is 00:06:58 first few lines. Speed up your evolution, unlock your intuitive ability. You you could awaken theer within you, restoring your health, vitality, and well-being. You can live your life with joy, happiness, and openness in every moment. Learn, techniques, which you can teach to your family and friends. I'm just a really curious person, right? So there's like a bunch of curiosity there. And then mostly, like, how do I make my life not suck so much? My business is barely scraping by. I keep getting into relationships with really terrible guys. Like, how do I fix this? There was an episode of Sex in the City.
Starting point is 00:07:33 Carries going on about breaking up with Big and all our friends are like, go to therapy. And the therapist is like, the common threat is you. Yeah. Maybe I've I I I I wrong for me, but who hasn't? The thing they have in common is you. What's your point? Maybe you're picking the wrong man. And I was like, the common thread is me. Like, something's off here.
Starting point is 00:07:59 We need to address this. I'll have you know that I had to watch the entire six seasons of sex in the city, just to find that clip, and both the movies the movies the movies the movies the movies the movies the movies the movies the movies the movies.. the movies. th the thi. And thi. And thi. And thi. And thi. And thi. And thi. And thi. And thi. And your life is better for it. I learned a few things about myself and about the opposite sex. Like what? Oh, martinis are great in the afternoon. I didn't really watch it. Come on. I've seen some episodes, but I haven't. Well, I do have to give it to Kim. I feel like that's some very evolved self-awareness right there, you know. Of course, courtesy of Carrie Bratchaw. So with all her ducks seemingly lined up, Kim decides to check out the school. So the school is called the Foundation for Spiritual Development, and the leader
Starting point is 00:08:41 leader is Dana Durye. It's in San Rafael, California, Marin County. There's like at least five similar type schools in Marin County that I know of. Marin people love their wooey stuff. So the school is in like a business building, like a straight-up office building. It's very non-conspicuous, right? You show up to this business building, you're like, okay. And there's a person at the door.
Starting point is 00:09:08 You're like, I'm here for this and then they let you in. Later you learn that person's like an assistant for the class and they're like reading everybody's energy who comes in, keeping everything safe. You go in, you sit in the room, it's like a typical office room with horrible like fluorescent lighting and office chairs and like this blue carpet. All the chairs are like lined around the edge of the room and everybody's like quiet and there's one guy in the back of the class, looks like he's meditating super hard. Or perhaps napping super hard. We're like checking everybody out first.
Starting point is 00:09:42 And everybody's very different in the class. There was like a couple in the class who were like all over each other the whole time. It was very bizarre. They never came back after that first day. Which you will soon understand why. And then probably like 15 minutes after class was supposed to start, like Dana finally comes in.
Starting point is 00:10:01 And this guy's six foot three, six two. He's super intimidating. Where's really colorful shirts and shoes that always match. Unlike me who mostly wears white, brown or gray with shoes that sometimes don't even match each other. But for him I'm kind of picturing the rock. I know he's more like a basic Woody Harrelson, only Boulder. I've seen pictures. He talks a lot about who he is. He's a guy who's perhaps has had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had had a the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. the th. the th. the th. th. th. thi, thi, the the the the the the the the the the the th. the th. th. th. He. He was, the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. He. He. He. He. He. He. He's th. He's really, th. He's really, th. the. the. theat. the. theat. the. the. theat. the. the. the. the. th. ths a lot about who he is. He's a guy who has perhaps has had or has not had a lot of magical stuff happened to him. So he has all these stories about this, right?
Starting point is 00:10:33 Here's how I created all of this magical stuff in my life. The caveat being, like, you can't too if you do exactly what I tell you. There is no gray area with how he spoke about anything, but then he just goes right into teaching you a grounding. So you like visualize the center of the earth and then you connect yourself with it with a grounding court. Nothing super original there, right? It's like the same old stuff. The same grounding thing I learned at Berkeley Psychic Institute. He kind of tells you a little bit about what you'll do in the rest of the classes. So every levels one, two, and three are all eight weeks long.
Starting point is 00:11:07 It's like very succinct curriculum and you just move through them. Yeah, and then he goes around the room and asks everybody why they're there. And my answer was to trust myself, because I learned that was like the thing I kept missing. So class was supposed to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be three hours, and then he would sit there and talk to people and answer questions, but he's really intimidating, right? Somebody who's like super confident and certain and matter of fact, he totally terrified me. Like in that sort of a way where I was like, oh, this person like either has all this info for me or he's gonna change my life or something and he's so sure of himself and I could see how people glob on to
Starting point is 00:11:50 him right and I remember like walking away like I'm home I've found the stuff I've been looking for I'm gonna be here until level 10 totally all in so she starts attending class 35 bucks a pop with the hope of eventually getting to the very tip-top level. The boss level, level 10, and her new leader? I had a private reading with him and you sit down and he just like starts talking to you and he said what I'm really trying to figure out in this school or whatever is to like how to have a relationship And that if I didn't get my shit together, I would
Starting point is 00:12:31 Create for myself a heart attack or cancer by the time I was 35 and I was like, oh, that Seems correct like I don't have my shit together. I'm always worried about getting some incurable illness, right? I'm like, oh, that totally tracks. So it's like I'm very committed at this point. If you need to do all this work and get it right, otherwise you're going to fricking die if I don't figure it out. So many cults use this tactic of fear for your life, fear for your health, to keep you locked in. Can I talk about why I don't like psychics? You can, Tyler, please, by all means. I mean, I don't believe in it. I don't think psychic ability is necessarily true.
Starting point is 00:13:15 But what's the overall arching reason? Because when people go to psychics, they usually need some assistance or help and they're getting it from psychics not from who they probably should get it from licensed genuine therapists. Right. They're unlicensed therapists. Much like Dana. He's not licensed of any variety. He's just a guy. He's a guy who like believes in himself, right? There's actually no proper training of any variety. Just like his degree in school was right in like agriculture farming stuff. Well he put the cult in agriculture, am I right guys? No. Laugh track. All right it was actually that's pretty good. Thank you. I'll give you that. Okay so what's the name of this place? What's this place again? FSD, it's called the Foundation for Spiritual Development.
Starting point is 00:14:07 Okay, so Farmer Joe Colt. That's what we'll call him, Farmer Joe Cult. So his day job he has is helping professional building management companies do their landsca perhaps like co-started it with the other guy and then they got along and then he took it on as his own thing. So he just chosen. So he talks about how we're a nonprofit, it's listed as a church, it's not a church, but to be a nonprofit that's a school you have to really be a a legitimate educational institution. So this was the category that was the closest fit. So level one you're like learning the basic tools, right?
Starting point is 00:14:50 Grounding, moving energy chakras, and you learn about your sixth chakra. So this one eight week class, I was like, dang, that was a lot of stuff. So walk us through a class, Kim. So you're doing this meditation for 40 minutes to an hour at the beginning of the class. The meditation that you do at the beginning of class is like, you know, your eyes water, you're like yawning a bunch. And he's like, that's a sign you're releasing energy. That's a sign you're being hypnotized, actually. And then he instructs you not to come out of that state. People like sit in class with their eyes closed most of the time like trying to stay in that state the whole time. So you're in this very hyper-sugestable state
Starting point is 00:15:31 throughout the whole class listening this person talk. So the second week or something is when he goes around the room and he's like you have a balloon over your head. Like it's all these fun objects, carmic pictures. And a thu, th, like, like, like, like, like, like, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, the the the their, their, their, their, the their, their, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, they, thi, thi, thi.a, thi.a, thi. Souuu. Sou. So, thi. So, thi. So, thi. So, th pictures. And a picture is like congealed energy, maybe from past life experiences, and you clear the picture with your running energy meditation. Like where you pull in energy from the cosmos and from the earth, you mix it together in your body and clear stuff that way. So if you clear your pictures, the subtext is bad stuff doesn't happen to you, you don't have to be at the whims of karma anymore, right? You don't
Starting point is 00:16:10 have to live it out. You can just do it through these modalities that we're teaching you. So it's all about oras and seeing images and clearing energies etc. And Dana, well of course, the ultimate seer of everything, of course. And so great Farmer Joe Colt looks at the balloon over your head and tells you what he sees. Yeah, like a comic strip, he reads the comics. Which quote gives you a picture and he says, it's gonna take you six weeks to clear. So around that time of six weeks like you might check back in and be like, hey, how's my picture doing? And he'll be like, oh, two more weeks. You didn't do it every day. First picture
Starting point is 00:16:50 I got was that upside-down snake, and I was like, okay. And then later that night I had a first date with a guy, and he had the snake tattooed on his throat. You know, you meet somebody, you're like, this person's an absolute a a a a absolute a absolute a absolute absolute absolute absolute absolute absolute absolute absolute absolute absolute absolute absolute absolute. It a absolute. It's a absolute. It's a absolute. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. th. th. thi. the thi. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the the the the the the th. th. the th. the th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. t. ti. ti. tee. toda. te. toda. te. toda. toda. toda. today. ti. today. today. today. t person's an absolute disaster. Like, might be a little bit of fun, but if I stayed with you, you would absolutely ruin my life. Like, he was that type of guy. And I was like, oh, maybe this picture is about me not choosing guys like that anymore. Okay, there's a word for that, but it's escaping me now. You know, when people see signs or make connections because they're sort of constantly looking for them. Oh, there's something called the improbability principle, and that's basically when two seemingly improbable events are actually quite commonplace.
Starting point is 00:17:32 For example, with Kim, she sees a guy with a tattoo and she thinks it's crazy and improbable, but really tattoos of snakes are common on men, and she would likely hang around with someone who has a lot of tattoos. Because she told me that 70% of her body is tattooed. So coincidences aren't that coincidental. And on your last class is the first time he mentioned Scientology. And he does it with this caveat like L. Ron Hubbard was a disaster of a human. He has all these problems, but the structure he figured out is correct. And he calls it ethics, but in Scientology it's called something else. So you're like, okay, he said Scientology, but like he acknowledged that Scientology is
Starting point is 00:18:15 not the best thing in the world, and he's just picking this one piece of it out, that's fine. You also learn about relationships in that class, which is also stolen from Scientology, but he doesn't tell you that. that. and that. th it it it it it it it it it th it th it th it th it th it th it th thi thi thi thi thi thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and he thi, and he thi, and he thi, thi, but thi, thi, but thi, but thi, but thi, but thi, but thi, but thi, but thi, but thi, but thi, but thi, but thi, but th. But, but, but, but, but th, but th, but th, but th, but th, but th, but th, but th, but th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, that class, which is also stolen from Scientology, but he doesn't tell you that. And what he teaches in that is the ARC triangle, which is affinity relationship communication, completely ripped off from Scientology. And even the pictures are very Scientology. In Scientology, they're called Angrams, and you clear them, and in Scientology is through auditing.
Starting point is 00:18:42 So instead of that meditation, you do it through auditing. And I didn't know nothing about Scientology. You know, the Tom Cruise stuff. I was curious about it, right? Because it's such a secretive thing, but I'd never looked into it to any degree. To her credit, this was 2016, and Scientology didn't have near the amount of exposure that it has today. Yeah, there weren't as many documentaries done and weren't quite showing those massive commercials during the Super Bowl or World Cup. Insane. Also
Starting point is 00:19:11 backstory real quick, the leader, before it was Farmer Joe Colt, was this guy Kim didn't want to mention, but he was an actual Scientologist and he was one who brought Scientology to the FSD. One of the lessons in level one, the, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I, th. I, thi. I, thi. I, thi. I, thi. I, th. I, thi, the, thi. I, th. I, th, th, th, th, th, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, th. And, th. And, th. And, thi. And, thi. I, thi. I, thi. I, thi. I, thi. I's, the thi. thi. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. the toe. the the thi. the thi Scientology to the FSD. One of the lessons in level one was the spiel about how they're not a cult. And then he went into discussing what is a cult and why we're not one of those. And what I remember of it was like this very strong emphasis on you can leave any time, right? Therefore, it's not a cult, which is, I think, pretty in line with the lay public's general assumption of what a cult is. It's like something that you get really stuck in and you can't leave, but it's so much more than that. So, I finish level one, and level two is they teach you that your eighth chakra is like your connection to source. So if you're connected to your eighth
Starting point is 00:20:05 chakra, then you're doing things in alignment. If I don't do things in alignment, like bad stuff's going to happen. It could be in alignment to like run your car into a train on the freeway or something, because that's what you got to do. So like anything could be excused because it's in alignment with this belief system. So there's not so much like a moral good and bad, it's like whatever is right. And so you're in alignment by closing down your chakras and be living in your eighth chakra. So you're constantly confronted with like, here's what I'm doing good and here's where I'm off.
Starting point is 00:20:41 So basically any time something didn't happen the way you wanted it to, like that was because you didn't hold your space or you didn't set the intention properly. What mind-fuckery, everything is always your fault, Tyler. Yeah, it is. It feels like that, but that's not the point here, Liz. In a cult are famous for deflecting blame, and this just takes it one step further. We did this experiment where th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, tho, tho, tho, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th. th. th. th. th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi. thi. thi. theeeeeeeeeeeeeea. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th further. We did this experiment where we called in different beings to talk to, and in level two, they introduced you to the being of the school, who's called Herc. In that level two, we brought in Herc and connected with him. I think this calls for little ditty about a being named Herk.
Starting point is 00:21:22 Does it? Does it really? In the walls of the spiritual FSD lives a being named Herk, footloose and fancy free. He's the all knowing, the wisest of all souls. I mean, of course, he is, he's Herk. HASHTag, Spirit Energy Goals. Oh God.
Starting point is 00:21:38 We're gonna lose so many listeners. I just give some facts. Yeah, and every teacher at the school. And as a student at the school, you're supposed to use that being also. So like the underlying belief being like if we're all talking to the same being, nobody can be wrong about something. Tyler also hates channelers. Yeah, I don't like channelers and this is why. So Dana's always telling us he's talking to his spirit guides. So nothing's ever coming from him, it's the guide. So what a great way to absolve yourself from responsibility.
Starting point is 00:22:12 And sometimes he'll like back talk at the guide, so he'll be like, I don't want to talk about that. And one of the other things we did in that class was we also called in an alien. They were like, put an energetic net on the sea leg and we're gonna bring in an alien being. And like, that was kind of weird. Definitely not like red flag, not questioning. Like weird belief system, sure. Alien wasn't something that I was like very opposed to either.
Starting point is 00:22:38 Because my dad growing up, he was like, Jesus was an alien. And any time the Mormon kids come by knocking on the door he'd be like come on in and sit him down and tell the whole story about how Jesus is an alien. This is fine. Now as tempting as it is to do a deep dive on Jesus being an alien we are going to resist the urge and stay on the story. It's very hard. It's very hard. I really wanted to. Now one area in which this cult differs this this c this c this c this c this c this c this c c c c c c c c c c c c c c c c c c this c- this c- this c- this cult is the c- their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their. their. their. their. their. their. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I is. I the the t. I t. I t. I t. I'm t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. the t which this cult differs from other cults is their sense of community or lack thereof. So your levels one through three you move with the same cohort but we never hung out or
Starting point is 00:23:13 anything. Emotions, fraternizing, like being friendly with people, not really thing that happens there, kind of frowned upon. So if you're socializing, you're at a lower vibration, like your lower chakras, like we're not doing that here. Everybody's like really trying to please the leader in a way I think. But it's still a form of thought control and group think, if you think about it, right? And like any good cult, there are levels, and the higher you get get the more secretive they become. We know that level five and up are upper levels. What happens in them? We have no idea.
Starting point is 00:23:52 So if you're in the upper level, even me being in the level four, I'm not allowed to talk to anybody in a level below me about what we do there. And if you tell people all of this super special information we have, you're going to put them at effect, Scientology term, and cause them problems, right? Like, they're going to go insane. All this bad stuff will happen to them, so like don't tell anybody, anything. Think more likely, like, if you tell people what's going on, people think you're insane, right?
Starting point is 00:24:22 You may be onto something, Kim. So, so so th. So, so th. So, so the thi. So we thi. So we thi. So we thi. And then you're told, like, okay, you have to clear this picture by the time we're doing level five, which was terrified for me because I'm like, oh, I have to move to level five. This will be the end of my entire world. You know, some of the other things you can do to help work through a picture is get healing work from other people. So during this period of time, I'm like dropping hundreds of dollars on healing sessions with different teachers at the school to try to make sure
Starting point is 00:25:06 that I definitely get into level five. For five months she did a private session a week. And it didn't end there. There's a whole process to get approved to go to level five, which we call Senate readings, which is one of them more intimidating experiences of my life. You go in, you sit down in a chair in front of like 20 people in a room. Everybody like chiming in with the stuff and it was about like, what would I get out of going to level five, what am I going to struggle with?
Starting point is 00:25:35 Right? It was like not anything out of the norm or unexpected came from that. Then they give you your picture and send you on your way. And she waited and then one day, you've got mail. I just got an email that's like, you've been accepted to level five. Part of the agreements for level five is that you cannot miss a class at all for the first six months, because if you leave in the middle, bad stuff's going to happen, you're going to go crazy and die. But I, like, had literally never missed a class, right?
Starting point is 00:26:07 So I was like, that's not even a problem for me. So who cares? This is what I'm supposed to be doing. And what we're supposed to be doing is commercial breaks. Starting point is 00:28:43 Tell us what you're finding over there. I'm taking through some old notes and papers and handouts and things and I like grabbed this one. I think this was from level five and the page it was open to the title is Potential Troublesource. So Potential Troublesource in Scientology is like the precursor to being a suppressive person. So you know your family members or your friends who are like you're in a cult, get out, those would be people who are potential trouble sources and then depending on how far you take it you like turn into a suppressive person. So they use all this Scientology language and we had no idea.
Starting point is 00:29:23 What a bunch of sons of bitches. So another reason there was no fraternizing allowed in this quote school is because there was really no time for it. Something people and spiritual stuff talk about is like ascension symptoms and it's common in therapy right you're digging up old trauma like your body feels different as you're doing that. The key difference meaning that like in therapy, this is a process that starts and stops, versus in this school, there is no end.
Starting point is 00:29:51 There's no break, so you're never given any sort of opportunity to remove yourself from it, see how you're doing and then come back to it. It's 24-7 all the time. I would get super anxious, like physical symptoms, which was a really good motivator to keep doing it. No, it's abusive. It's psychologically abusive. Despite that, she kept going and she kept paying for whatever she needed to in order to stay and get the help they were continually paying for whatever she needed to in order to stay and get the
Starting point is 00:30:25 help they were continually telling her she needed. At least a couple thousand dollars that I totally did not have. It was just very reckless with some credit cards and things. And this is the time where I'm like really questioning what I'm doing with my life. I'm going like my acupuncture business is not panning out, I'm not making any money. All of this spiritual work was like around work and abundance and all of that stuff. And the constant message was always like, it's you that's the problem, right? Like, you're either not in alignment, you're not holding your chakras in the right way, you're not at the right vibration.
Starting point is 00:31:00 So, well, what's the solution for that? More spiritual stuff, right? It's not like get a business coach and learn these very tangible skills. Like, you don't need to do that. If you're really holding your intention, you don't even need a website for your business. People will just show up. Which is just like, so ridiculous. I'm just going to hold my intention, Tyler, and intentionalize us getting a million new listeners by next week.
Starting point is 00:31:28 Yeah, I was just going to pray to alien Jesus. Teamwork. So now Kim is in the very exclusive, very spiritually evolved, level 5. So now we're into the Secret Society of Stuff. We go to class and it was actually in the same room we had been. We were just on a different day. So Dana teaches Level 5. One of the things we know that we're going to learn is a thing called timeline healing.
Starting point is 00:31:57 Everyone who went to this school wonders where this technique came from. The only answer was, you know, Dana or whoever channeled it from Herk, the being of the school, and that's where it came from. In the walls of the spiritual FSD lives a being named Herk, footloose and fancy free. He's the all knowing, the wisest of all souls. I mean, of course he is, he's Herk. HASHT HASH. I later learned, this is auditing in Scientology. In Scientology, they have a thing called an e-meter where you hold these two tin cans and it's hooked up to this thing. And so the way they understand that you like cleared the energy, the the like needle on the e-meter. And so here they just like remove the middleman of the e-meter. So instead of using that, we're just like psychically doing it to each other, being the e-meter for the other person.
Starting point is 00:33:14 There was a guy in level four, and he stood up in the middle of class and was like, this is Scientology. You guys are teaching Scientology, I'm out and like walked out of class. And people very much don't like that. It's very thought well received. And as Kim got more committed, the more she struggled with her outside world. It was very difficult for me to function with like family and friends at this point in a way that felt meaningful.
Starting point is 00:33:44 So like them being very different and like having this kind of different reality from me, so like I can't hang out with them. So I was starting to kind of remove myself from my family. And then the stability is in like this weekly class that I'm going to. And then at the end of level five, I went to Brazil to go see John of God as a result of being involved, in this....... this, like, like, like, like, like, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, of level five, I went to Brazil to go see John of God as a result of being involved in this group as well, which was another thing I could not afford. He takes like a pair of forceps with cotton ball in the end and like shoves it all the way up people's noses. It's very similar to like lobotomy practices. You're not asleep. People are awake and they're, like, I don't feel any pain, I don't feel anything. I was very vehemently, like, there's absolutely no way
Starting point is 00:34:59 and letting this guy touch me to any degree. He creeps me out. And the first day, they make us get up super early because the first thing they do in the morning are these physical interventions. And so we like sit down and this girl gets like wheeled out in a wheelchair, she looks super high. And like, this is so weird. And he comes out, he like bends her head back. She's like leaning against the wall and he scrapes her eye with a stick knife. Like. Because the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th, because, because the the th, because th, because th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, the the thi, thi, the the the the the the th. the the th. the the the the th, th, th, the th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooes, thu, head back, she's like leaning against the wall and he scrapes her eye with a steak knife. Like, scrapes the top of her eye off and I'm like, what the fuck? So he scrapes her eyeball, they like stick her back in the wheelchair and wheel her way. I'm like, wow, my definition of reality does not apply anymore.
Starting point is 00:35:39 Neither does ours, Kim. But everybody gets like a psychic intervention. So you go in this room, you sit there with your eyes closed for an indeterminate period of time, you feel super stoned afterwards, who knows what's going on, and then you have to sleep for 24 hours. You're not allowed to talk to anybody, not allowed to do anything, see anybody. So there's like a healing waterfall that you can visit and we did that and later that day I felt that day I I I I I I I I I I that day that day that day that day that day that day that day that day that day that day that day that day that day that day that day that day that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that th. th. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. to to to to to to to to to to to to to th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the their their the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the. the. the. the. the. the. the. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. thea. te. the. that and later that day I felt like my skin was completely on fire like I had a sunburn everywhere it was very strange feeling and then I got incredibly sick like the worst diarrhea I've ever had in my entire life. Okay so aside from the creepy eye surgery
Starting point is 00:36:18 the poisoning the burnt skin and the violent diarrhea how was Brazil? Kind of boring. The rest of the time was kind of uneventful. You stand in lines and you like see him and ask questions or whatever. And he's so creepy. And like, this guy creeps me out. Now knowing what we know about him makes perfect sense. If you didn't look him up yet, he is a Brazilian convicted rapist, self-proclaimed medium, and
Starting point is 00:36:45 self-proclaimed psychic surgeon. And he had a massive following. Yeah, Oprah. Oprah promoted him, didn't she? She did. And you know, this was all before they found out about the alleged child sex farms he was operating. Child sex farms.
Starting point is 00:37:00 First of all, the number of sexual assault accusations started small and eventually reached 600. Six hundred. Yes, even his daughter accused him of abuse and rape until she fled the home at age 14. It's horrible. It's horrible. This guy is a con artist and a horrible human being. I can't even, it's so, I just like this kind of stuff just really, it's just
Starting point is 00:37:24 breaks my heart. I can't even like,'s so, I just like this kind of stuff just really, it breaks my heart. I can't even like, people gave this guy millions and millions of dollars. They gave their life savings to this man, trying to heal them and all of that was connery and fakery. And then this, and his name is John of God. What a horrible, horrible human being. And this retreat was like the 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. style of a thing, Friday through Sunday where it's like all day and then there's dream work at night, whole nine yards. He really likes teaching in movies, so we watched Constantine. He loves Keanu Reeves. It's so funny. Mr. Constantine, I'd like to ask you a few questions. I know the circles you travel in, the occult, exorcisms. What if I told you that God and the devil made it wait that the souls of all mankind?
Starting point is 00:38:44 Who to hell? So in this, in this, in this, in this, in this, in this, in this, in this, in th th th th th th thi thi thi the their their their their the devil made it wait for the souls of all mankind. Who to hell? So in this retreat, you know, now you're starting to get into the super secret information, right? And he talks about the history of the world and that aliens came here, earth has gold or some other resource, they were trying to get it and created humans to be the sort of slave race that would do all of this dirty work for them. Oh, so we're all here to help aliens get gold. Give me the gold. I want to go. Right, the aliens can fly thousands of light years to earth on
Starting point is 00:39:17 complicated spacecrafts, but what they really need is gold for friendship bracelets. You know, it seems like the alien should should should to to to to to to be to be to be th th to be th th th th the to be the the th thi to be the thi the the thi the thi the the thi the the the thi. the thoes thoes the thi, the tho- tho- tho- tho- tho. the, thi, thi, thi, thi. thi. their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their th. thi. thi. the, the, the, the, the. the. theananananananananananananananananananananananananananususus. theeateateeatea. thea. thea. theee. the. You know, it seems like the alien should have come up with a different plan because shit's gone sideways here on this planet. And then you get your postulate. Postulate is like this idea of sort of your life intention. I think we normally think of life purpose is like I'm here to have a family. It's like a thing you do or a thing you like become. Whereas a postulate would be the
Starting point is 00:39:57 tone you hold or the thing you're experiencing. Your postulate is your ultimate tone. Like that's the thing you need to have in everything. As I later learned, postulate is a Scientology word. Level 7 is like completely a full out level of Scientology. I think it's part of the OT levels. So one of those like really upper level Scientology, and this is a thing that everybody jokes about, is like the overlord Zeno and the space opera story,
Starting point is 00:40:29 which is basically the story he told us, which is different words attached to it. You're like, oh, we've been working so hard. Now we get all the secret information. You're like, what the hell? This is just totally bad shit. It may be tot tot tot tot tot, tot, tot, tot, the tot, the the tot, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thiiolk, thiol-a, thi-a, thi-a, thoom, thi-a, thi-a, thoom-a, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, thii-a, thi-a, thi-s, thi-s, thi-s, thi-s, thi-s, thi-s, tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, to-s. thoo totally bad shit, but yet Kim wasn't allowed to question. There are some questions that are like, where did it come from? I don't feel safe enough to ask that question because I know like this person who's could probably win any debate and in private we're having conversations with friends and stuff about that but nobody knows and nobody's brave enough to ask.
Starting point is 00:41:03 First time I remember somebody questioning something was a guy in my level four class. He spoke up and was like, I don't see it this way. This doesn't make sense to me, I'm not on board and the teacher broke him down to the place where I think he cried and that was the end of the conversation. Level 8, I don't remember much of anything about level 8. Now that I'm thinking about it, like we were just still just trudging through timelines, right? So it'd be like timelines about you, timelines about relationships, timelines about groups and awareness and nature, and then pre-determined timelines. The wording of these things, you're like, I don't even know what they're trying to say. In the middle of level eight, one of my friends left. So this is the guy met in level one. I remember having a conversation with him
Starting point is 00:41:49 where he's like, this is a cult. And I was like, it's not a cult. You can leave whenever you want. He was right. So he left in the middle of class. And we all like talked he couldn't hack it. But like he left instead of doing the work or whatever. Nobody had anything nice to say about it. Like he chose what was right for him.
Starting point is 00:42:09 No, that was not the conversation. And eventually the retreat for level eight was approaching. Yes, the higher levels, they all came with retreats. That one happened similar to the other one, like same place, same kind of structure, dinky little cabbids that fit two people. Nothing fancy about it, for sure. And that one, we watched a Tom Cruise movie. That's fitting, fitting selection. I hope it was cocktail.
Starting point is 00:42:34 The hippie, hippie sha-yeah, yeah, woo. And he's telling us, like, you should be listening to your guides for every single decision you make. What step you should walk forward on first? Like which foot are you going to use first? What are you going to eat for dinner? What color socks you're going to wear? So it's like paralyzing at this point. You were even expressly told not to trust yourself. Your mind has now been hijacked, right? This is the absolute mind control piece of the whole thing. It. It. It th. It th. Like my business is fledgling after COVID, right? So it's like never recovered. I started really questioning, was like, what's the point of any of this, right? Like, why are we doing this? People are miserable here and like, why?
Starting point is 00:43:29 But I got a new boyfriend who's super awesome, and he describes it as like listening to me, talk about class, is like listening to me, go off, have dates with my abusive boyfriend, and tell him about it. I think it's really hard for him to like, hear me, bitching complaint about this class class class class class class this class this class, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, andell him about it. I think it's really hard for him to like hear me bitching complaint about this class where I'm like still in it and I'm still in it because I've been told like I can't leave in the middle of it right?
Starting point is 00:43:52 So she stays and continues on. After all she's almost to her end goal, level 10. So it's like we moved to level 9 later that year there was another healing retreat. COVID's still very much a thing th thing th thing thing thing th thing thing th thing th thing th thing th thing th thing th thing th th th th th th th th th to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to th. Like me plus four other people are the only people wearing masks. And like nothing's being enforced. They were essentially the cause of 35 plus people getting COVID. It was a third of the participants.

And I wrote them this vehement email that was like, you're like all about ethics and integrity and this is like the least ethics and integrity I've ever seen, right? So with Kim rapidly approaching the golden level 10, she's got to be close now, right? So level 9 is not just one year, it's three years.
Starting point is 00:46:56 Three years. That's a curveball even Carrie Wood couldn't throw. What we've failed to mention on the show is I am an obsessive Chicago Cubs fan and have been since I was a child and of course Liz is from Chicago so we do love our Cubs. We do. Yep yep and Carrie Wood of course was a picture for Cubs. I miss this. Who am I? Rizzo? Yeah he got it in two seconds. Rizzo was my favorite player and I still like Rizzo even though he's on the Yankees. And of course Chicago is our number one city, so... Hey Chicago, what do you say? Cubs are gonna win today.
Starting point is 00:47:34 No cups go. So at level nine, Dana notoriously keeps people in class like way later than it's supposed to go. You have class at 7.30, supposed to end at 10 or 10.30, and some days you're there till midnight. When I was assisting in the level one class, somebody would always complain about it. And then they would be told, you can leave if you want to, but like, you're resisting your growth. That's you having a problem with me, you two hours late is your problem.
Starting point is 00:48:05 It has nothing to do with me. And I was telling a friend about this and she was like, that's abusive. He's abusing your time. You have a set time for class and he doesn't keep the agreement. And I was like, huh, you are not wrong. That's totally what that is. So things are kind of starting to unravel here as I'm having these realizations. Part of the grift of these upper levels
Starting point is 00:48:29 is that you'll be able to walk through walls and do all of these magical things. Does it actually happen? No. Dana, I remember very vividly in one class him saying, like, I can walk through walls, but I can't do it in front of you because it'll put everyone at effect. What a nice way of humble bragging about something you can't do and convincing everybody
Starting point is 00:48:51 you can. So things are starting to come out and I was like, maybe I need to learn more about Scientology. So sit there in class, pretend to take notes on my phone and ask chat GPT questions about the stuff we were talking about. I would be like, tell me about the reactive mind. What is being at cause mean? This is from Scientology. So I was starting to get these clues through having a conversation there with chat GBT.
Starting point is 00:49:16 Being at cause, for those who don't know, is a Scientology term, where basically it means you are to blame for everything in your life, the good, the bad, and the ugly, so rather than things happening to you by external forces. It's basically a fancy way to say, it's your fault if you got hit by a bus today or lost your lunch money or accidentally ate gluten in Los Angeles. Interestingly enough, being at cause dot com is the domain name for the FSD. I mean, if that doesn't tell you all you need to know, I don't know what does. So I'm on this mission. It started as I'm gonna figure out where this came from.
Starting point is 00:49:53 And I started finding bits and pieces, right? I start reading people's like, I left Scientology memoirs. The first one was Gena Miss Cavage's book and I had no idea that Scientology like did stuff with kids. There's like a prison camp for kids. It's totally brutal. And then I read two others, watch that HBO show, then to start like learning about cults and things and you're like, I am totally in a cult. This is textbook. But realizing you're in a cult is only the first step in the battle. Now remember, Kim had been programmed for many years.
Starting point is 00:50:30 She was in it for like eight years. Oh, a long time. Yeah. But, like, I'm afraid to leave because we've been told over and over again that if you leave it, you're going to call in negative experiences to work stuff out. So basically, by being in the school, you're bypassing all of this other challenging stuff you would have to do, which is ridiculous because challenging stuff was still happening, right? Life was not sunshin' roses by any means. And the stories that get told about people who leave is so-and-so left and got cancer,
Starting point is 00:51:04 so and so left and then a dog died. Like these really severe things that happened. Yeah, so still going to class, still getting stuck there till midnight, getting home at like one in the morning. Part of me is like, oh, maybe I'll get to level 10. So I'm like, holding out. And it was like a year year year, right? And at a point I became an assistant teacher. After class, we would check in with the teacher and assistants after the students
Starting point is 00:51:32 had all left. And in one of these check-ins, he was telling us, like, I think a lot of people are going to start leaving level 10 and 9 because their reactive minds are too strong. We know this super high level of truth and if you don't like it, you're their thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi th. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, the, the. I thi, thi, theat, I the. I the, I thi, I thi, I thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I I th. I, th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I thi, thi, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. I th are too strong. We know this super high level of truth, and if you don't like it, you're gonna be mad about it, and you're gonna leave. So this is another like cult leadery thing, right? Like I was just like bubbling over, fuming. Like, you're sitting here talking absolute trash bullshit to these people, making stuff up, and I'm watching you do it and they're just like sucking it up and I was like I don't want to listen to you talk at
Starting point is 00:52:07 all ever again and I said that to his face and I was like that was a very healing moment for me going from being terrified to talk to this man to telling him I I never need to listen to you talk again and then I stopped going, I just, I, Irish goodbye, what I call it, where you just leave and you don't say anything. Suddenly I never came back. And I never heard from anyone. Didn't hear from him. He's my godfather, like a person you're supposed to have this connection with, right? And I hear nothing, nothing at all.
Starting point is 00:52:39 And it was like so freeing and exciting. I just dropped so much dead weight, right? Before it was like, oh I'm not allowed to make all of my own choices. So there's like so much hesitation and instead it can be like, yes you can't. We need to pay attention to what we're doing. I don't have to blame it on a ghost for a being or an alien or whatever it is. It could just be me, but it gets to make that choice. I'm actually here instead of watching from above. And I also was able to like dial in some other stuff that was off that I was like
Starting point is 00:53:16 trying to use meditation to cure, which is not a cure for things, right? Sometimes it is, but not all the time. Sometimes it is, but not all the time. And farmer Joe Colt today, well, from the website, it looks like he's still doing his thing. And Kim is one of the first to publicly speak out against this group, as far as she knows. So after years and years of thinking it was her fault for everything bad or challenging in her life, Kim finally realized that wasn't true at all. Another piece was like hiring the business coach that I needed. I was like I spent
Starting point is 00:53:52 all this money on spirituality that got me absolutely zero places I needed to go, if not very further from the point. I'm going to find somebody who can actually teach me what I really need to do, which has definitely helped shift by business so that it's like starting to grow. And in my healing process of the whole thing, like have learned a lot and done some training, and so now I also help people recovering from cults and religious trauma and narcissistic abuse and all of those things. I came there to learn how to trust myself, and clearly I didn't get that. My trust and myself was completely obliterated, right? Like completely dropped down,
Starting point is 00:54:32 and then the process of leaving, and every instance of speaking out or sharing more stuff about this. I really like educating people, like all of that is that trust building back. I actually feel like I'm living my life. Thank you, Kim, for sharing your story. And today she has a wonderful boyfriend who did help her see the light and get out of the cult. You know, we couldn't include her entire interview here, obviously, but Kim is quite active in speaking about
Starting point is 00:55:05 cults and helping those recover from cult abuse. And she has a really good method and how you can spot a cult before it gets you. It's called the CULT method, which might help you stay out of a cult. When you start studying cults, you learn about all these different frameworks to understand like what characteristics and qualities they have. There's the bite bottle, there's the the 10 thi th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th thoes thoes th thoes thoes thoes thoes thoes those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those those th th th th th th th th th th th th th thoes thoes thoes thoes thoes thoes thoes thoe cu cu cu cu thooo. thoooo. thooooooooooo. thoooooooooooooooooooes th th different frameworks to understand like what characteristics and qualities they have. There's the bite model, there's the 10 things of thought reform, but the problem is you don't get that level of intel until you're deep, but not at the beginning. And that's the part that's really tricky of like how do I not do this again? And I think also making the parallel to abusive relationships, which we all all th th th th th th thi th thi thi all might thi all might th thi all might thi all might thi all might thi all thi all th thi all thi all all all thi all thi all thi all thi all thi all thi the thi the the the thi thi the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. the. the. ty tipeateateateateateate. ti. teateateate. teate. thi. thi. thi. theate. the.this again? And I think also making the parallel to abusive
Starting point is 00:55:45 relationships, which we all might have a little more experience than we have with cults is with that type of relationship dynamic. So the same principles apply and I use the word cult to describe it. So you have C for charisma, certainty, and confidence, which is that person who comes across, like I know I have all the answers for you. You is uniqueness and this is the uniqueness of the group. So like we have these special tools. We have this unique vantage point thing you don't have something you can't get anywhere else. And then you have the L for love bombing. Love bombing makes you feel chosen, makes you feel chosen, makes you
Starting point is 00:56:22 feel unique. And then the tea for time, or like time pressure, you had your dopamine hijacked for an entire weekend and they're like sign up today for only $4,500 when usually it's $12,000. MLM's similar thing. So I think those four things show up at the beginning and they're a little easier to recognize, and all of these things produce thensensensensensensensensensensensensensensensensensensens thens thens thens thens th, th, thms, thms, thi thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the toe toe toe to to to to to to to to to to little easier to recognize. And all of these things produce in us a disregulated system. And for the most part, that disregulation shows up as excitement. You're like, the guys I've dated who've been super toxic, like the beginning of that relationship was super fun. And so, like, with all these things, you know, like a group being unique isn't inherently problematic, a person being charismatic isn't inherently problematic.
Starting point is 00:57:05 When you have all of them together, or even one that really sticks out, to me that's like a caution flag or potentially red flags where you're going to go, I'm going to slow way down here. Like, they want me to sign up today, I'm not going to do that. If only she had known the C-U-L-T the C-T. I'm not going to do that. If only she had known the C-U-L-T method, she wouldn't have had to deal with such a C-U-N-T. Very nice. Thank you again Kim and to find Kim and her coaching and all the other ways to find
