Name five Pokemon.
Yeah.
That aren't Pikachu.
Charmander, Charzard, snorlax.
Whoa.
Deep cut.
You're already further than I thought.
You two.
Oh.
And.
The one you always say first.
Yeah, there's one that we all want.
You should have except Pikachu.
No.
No, there's one that you always say.
That I always say.
Yeah.
I do?
Yeah.
At least in David and I's mind.
Green.
Oh, was that Barbosaur?
Yeah.
Oh.
Okay, okay, okay, okay.
Good job.
Wait, when do I ever say that?
Yeah, what is up, people of the internet?
Welcome back to another episode of the Wayform podcast.
We're your host.
I'm Marquez.
I'm Andrew.
And I'm David.
We're all finally back in one room.
Took a few weeks, but we did it.
We did it.
We're back.
And right on time for TechTember.
Technically, it's not yet TechTember as we record this.
But in today's episode, we have Pixel 11's Apple launch, the M6 chip, the M5 Max,
the M5 Ultra, we have nothing OS5, and somehow also our first render slash leak of the Galaxy
S-27 Ultra.
So if it's not TechTember, it's at least gadget season, we're back.
If that's not the most SEO intro we've ever done, I don't know what it is.
That's true.
Pixel 11 Pro.
Tendos switch too, yeah.
Yeah, I took stock of all the things that are coming up in the next month or so,
and it's, it's, it's, it's back, baby.
Your screenshot gave me a heart attack.
Yeah, it was a little, it's a lot of stuff.
We're going to have a lot of one out of tens on this podcast in the next few weeks.
It's going to be good.
If you want to keep up with all this stuff,
I would highly suggest hitting the little subscribe button.
I almost said a little red subscribe button, but it's not red anymore.
But hit the subscribe button so that you're first to be updated when all this stuff gets talked about.
But first, does anyone have a, did they even test this?
I do.
And I already confirmed that this is also an issue with Adams.
Yeah.
But I looked at your, anyways.
My YouTube subscriptions tab on mobile.
on Android.
On Android.
I can already tell you they don't test that.
Okay.
I'm really mad that right now
the number one thing showing is
oh no, it kind of went away.
You can still kind of see it.
I have a recording of it,
but the
padding.
Padding.
Yeah.
Is super messed up.
Like zero pixels.
Right now, so before it was showing shorts first,
the three like vertical shorts on top,
the bottom of them were touching
the thumbnail of the video underneath.
And then as you scroll three,
Look how close the channel names are to each next video.
Actually, here, wait, look at the shorts.
Yeah, so it's kind of like...
Do you see this?
It's bad.
It's touching.
They're touching.
There's a pixel.
It's a pixel.
It's a pixel.
It should be like the best case.
And so on your pixel, not an issue, right?
Your iPhone not an issue.
It looks fine on my iPhone, yeah.
Can you look at yours?
It looks fine.
What is happening?
This is iPhone.
But on Adam's pixel, it's,
There's no update available for that.
I can't find it again.
Like, it's not happening now.
Subscriptions tab.
This morning it was happening.
Subscriptions tab, right?
Yes.
And I can swipe away, totally close YouTube, open it back up, and I am still doing the exact same thing.
Maybe one random build.
It's back.
It's back.
It's back.
It's just doing it again.
Okay.
I had to make, this was one that was like felt so specific.
I had to check with someone else.
But the fact that Adams is doing it too.
Yeah.
It looks awful.
Sorry.
That made me so bad when I looked at yesterday.
Yeah.
Also, when I kept checking last night.
for it to work. Every time I reopened YouTube, it just reopened it as a short play, which was really weird.
Oh, that's happened to me before. Why? It's weird that they kind of seem to treat like the shorts feed and the
YouTube app as like not separate, but as different instances. So if I have a long form video playing
and then I open a short, it will full screen and play the short. And then when I leave the short,
the long form video instantly resumes. Has it ever happened to you? Whoa. No. They're like two different
instances. That happens to me, but it doesn't always work. Like I'll not every time, but a lot
of times the long form will just keep playing while the shorts that's happened and i can tell it's
not supposed to do that but yeah it that's happened to me as well yeah and so that sometimes gets
kind of weird yeah i don't really watch youtube shorts at all i know they've had a lot of growth but i don't
really watch them at all yeah it's actually pretty impressive it's hard to avoid they're kind of
shoved in your face in the app yeah i guess i don't watch a lot of youtube videos on my phone and when
i do i have the screen off so yeah
It's funny.
Most of the YouTube I watch on my phone is shorts.
And then longer-form stuff I watch on my TV.
Yeah, I watch YouTube videos on my projector and that's about it.
I forgot how weird all of our YouTube watching is.
It's very strange.
You watch it on in your pocket with a screen off.
You watch it on a projector.
You watch it on TV.
I do screen off in the car to listen all the time.
Yeah.
Or I do shorts.
Every video is a podcast.
I don't do any of those things.
You want to talk about weird YouTube.
I open my YouTube app, but I'm two hours and nine minutes into a three-hour and
49 video.
You want to know what the video is?
It's the 1995 American League, the ALBS, Game 5.
Like uninterrupted broadcast?
Yeah, Yankees and Meritors.
Nice.
Yeah, you know, we all have very different ways of using YouTube.
I'm about to get on a flight this afternoon, and I have downloaded a bunch of videos,
but it's a Starlink flight, so I didn't have to.
Oh.
You still should.
I will never fully trust internet on a plane.
I can tell you.
It was like, never mind, we don't have Starlink, and you were like, damn it.
Yeah, if you get on a United Regional flight that has Starlink on it,
I promise you don't need to download anything.
Promise.
I promise.
It's phenomenally fast.
I just want to play Dodon.
How much does it cost?
Free.
It's free.
Yeah, that was funny.
If you don't have Starlink, it costs $8, and if they do have Starlink, it's free.
So it's $8 for the worst Wi-Fi.
Pretending you have Internet?
Yeah, for the bad Wi-Fi.
And for the amazing Wi-Fi.
It's free.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's awesome.
It's crazy.
I had somebody bliped me something while I was on flight.
I forgot.
A couple flights.
ago. I got a blip and I accepted it and it was fine.
Part of me was the blip.
It was from, I think Harper captioned
a short and blipped it to me while I was flying.
And I downloaded it. I thought I was a random person.
No, no, no, yeah. It was great. So reason it feels like
if you, if someone on a plane
blips something to someone else on another plane, it would
make the plane crash. I don't know why.
But my brain is just like...
The flights like sink up and, like, fly
the same direction. I don't know what it is, but...
You can play RuneScape on the plane now.
I might have to start playing RuneScape again.
100%.
That's a perfect plane.
game.
I saw somebody
FaceTiming.
Oh, I don't want to do that.
You're not supposed to face-time?
But you can.
You're not supposed to do video calls
or even audio calls on planes.
I think you're just not supposed to have it on speaker.
That's just because it's annoying.
I think you're not supposed to even do
any kind of audio call.
I think that that's a rule.
Yeah.
With Starlink people have been breaking
that rule.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Well, your YouTube glitch on the pixels
has reminded me that we all have lots of pixels
here in this room and we haven't actually
finished talking about our final thoughts on pixel 11's so we might as well do that pixel 11
lineup thoughts yeah my full review is in the works so if you want that detailed deep dive and
cinema uh stay tuned for that but yeah uh i have been daily driving the pixel 11 pro in matt black
for by the time you hear this close to three weeks i think pro or pro xl pro xl good call pro
i went back to the regular pro this year and i usually use the excel so i kind of was wish
I was using Excel, to be honest.
It's another one of those phones that I really like
and will not be recommending to almost anyone ever.
It's funny, we've talked about in the past
how the pro phones are harder to recommend
because of how good the base phones have gotten.
It's more true than ever.
The pro phones have less RAM than last year's pro phones.
They start at the same amount of RAM as a regular phone,
so they're even closer together.
You still have three cameras,
you still have a bright display,
you still have all this stuff.
the reason to spend an extra $200 or whatever it is for the pro phone
Matt Black Rails I guess like a slightly better set of cameras better cameras
but faster night sight yeah you guys are forgetting highlight highlight's the best feature
so highlight isn't a good reason to buy the pros is my take five reasons to buy the pro
pink green white yeah whatever the other two colors I don't know this makes my eyes bleed
it's a very bright that's the future
Yeah, this is the non-pro fuchsia.
Yeah, it hurts.
It's a nice color.
I like it.
It's a nice color.
It's a commitment to the color, too.
It's not just like, oh, we heard you liked colors, so here's a splash of we're thinking about.
Touching this phone, so this is the standard pixel 11.
It reminds me how much I wish they would put the mat rails on all of the pro color phones.
I do too.
On the black, it's cool.
I'm glad that they committed to the bit.
Appreciate that.
Yeah, appreciate that.
Definitely didn't do that just for you, of course.
But I really like this on the green and on the like dune color.
I don't know.
It's, it's, yeah.
Yeah, so why do you not want to recommend these phones to anybody?
Just because they're so similar and because last year is like almost better in some ways.
So it's specifically the upgraded phones over the base.
So the only one I could really recommend to most people is the Pixel 11.
Okay.
The Pixel 11 is now $800.
It's $900 now.
Yeah, $8.99.
Yeah. And for a $900 phone, like, you can get a lot of phone. You can get a 1 plus 15. You can get a FindX9 or whatever. Like, there are lots of really nice phones with crazy multiple cameras and super fast charging batteries and all this stuff. But if you're getting a pixel, it's because you want the pixel experience. You want all of the software, Android 17, out the box, all that stuff. And that's great. And you get it. And the hardware is fine. But the second you start thinking about, oh, I might want to get the pro or the pro XL or the pro fold, well, you have to find another.
couple hundred more dollars of value in that and I don't see that in those phones.
Yeah.
Especially not the pro or the pro XL.
Yeah.
Even though I like using them and they're totally fine phones.
So that's the general thesis.
The pro fold is like back to being fine because all the folds are expensive and it has the
IP 68 angle.
It has the Google Software Experience angle.
So there are reasons you could get that phone.
And it looks cool.
the camera bar is cooler this year.
It's nice to use clothes too.
I like it.
But yeah, they're fine phones.
I have a question.
Did you use Gemini Intelligence a lot during your testing?
Not any more than I was on any other phone.
Okay, because I was like pressure testing the hell out of it.
And Gemini Intelligence for people that don't know is like the experience where randomly a little Gemini chip will pop up on your screen when it thinks it can do something for you.
So one of the examples is like, if you.
like if you want to make a reservation at a,
if someone text you and they said,
did you make that reservation at this restaurant,
that a little chip will pop up that's like,
make the reservation.
A couple of things.
One, the animation they show on their website
is completely different and way cleaner
than the actual process that happens when this happens.
Number two, the thing that actually happens
is this little chip pops up.
You have to have open table installed.
It only works for open table.
You have to go into the settings
of the phone and then go to the Gemini
Proactive Assistance
and then you have to go and you have to click
Open Table on. So everything's off by default.
Which generally I'm like opt-in is better
in this case. The fact that
they don't really tell you which
integrations work with Gemini Intelligence.
Like there's not really a list.
And then you have to go in and just manually
tick on every single option.
And then the process
of making it work is just so
convoluted. Like you'll
it'll be like make a reservation.
You tap a button.
The only way to make this chip pop up
is if someone texts you and says,
can you make a reservation at this place
at this time?
On this day.
So it's either a date or time,
but it's this place and date or time.
And if they do not say those exact two things
in the text, it will not pop up.
And Google doesn't tell you
what you need to make these chips pop up.
So, and also, I don't know.
My other angle in this is like, if someone's going to text you to ask you to make the reservation and you're going to have your AI do it, why don't they just have their AI do the reservation?
You know what I mean?
Like, why would you text someone else and say, can you make this reservation and just set it instead of just on your Gemini iPhone just being like, make the reservation?
I don't know.
I think they're assuming the person is just like, you were like, oh, yeah, let's go there.
I'll make a reservation.
And now they're just being like, oh, did you make it for this time?
which is like,
there's a couple
narrow use case.
It is a very narrow use case.
It's also funny because,
what,
three or four years ago at
IO,
they were telling us
about how like
our phones would be able
to call places
and make reservations.
That was like a long time.
Yeah,
with no,
and that didn't work
because no restaurant
person wanted to talk
to the robot that called them.
Yeah.
And now we're like,
oh, now if someone
texts you exactly
the date and time and place,
maybe if you have
this app installed
with these permissions checked off.
That you checked.
Our AI might be able to get it.
Yeah.
Here's another funny one.
Okay.
So another integration with Gemini Intelligence is that if you have a grocery list on Google Keep.
I do.
Yes.
Okay.
I know that that's not common, but I do.
Can I make a guess at what I want this to be before you tell me?
Sure.
Because I have like, you said this exactly.
Yeah.
If it could ask which grocery store I'm going to and rearrange it based on the aisle number
at that grocery store.
That is my like number one thing I want one to do.
So whatever you say now will disappoint.
Not even close.
Okay,
I'm going to tell you how this works.
So the only like,
it has like some grocery integrations,
but it's like got Costco and it's got,
Instacart.
Okay.
You have to have these apps installed on your phone.
You have to have a grocery list in Google Keep.
It can't just be called grocery list.
It has to be called like Instacart or something.
The title of the Keep,
The Google Keep like list has to be like Instacart shopping list or like something or like Costco shopping list.
Oh, that's done because when you add something to the grocery list, that means you have to have a list in Keep called groceries.
Yes.
So that's a different list.
I, you know, this might not be the same forever, but when we were testing this extensively, we had it just called grocery shopping list and it didn't work.
And we changed it to be called Instacart shopping list and then it did work.
That's crazy.
So you have to have a shopping list in Google Keep, which is already really really.
specific and it has to be called something specific so that Gemini intelligence can know that it's a
shopping list even though it apparently can't just be called shopping list and then it will like
suggest meals based on the things that you have in your shopping list that will open up Instacart
and like be like you should buy these items it's just like the the way that I put this in my review
was like it feels like these were made in the like Silicon Valley Society if Utopia factory
where some CEO was like,
I want to do 5% less work.
So this extremely specific set of scenarios
and use cases that I have in my life
we're going to ship for everybody.
Yeah.
I would almost even say it feels like big idea,
so many restrictions,
we have to narrow it down to the smallest idea possible
where we hope we can nail a demo of it.
And Google doesn't tell you what those parameters are.
That's the other thing.
Like, they don't tell you what you need to actually invoke these things.
And that's what's confusing.
And I get it.
I talked to them and they were like, well, we don't want to make it pop up too often, right?
We don't want to accidentally invoke these chips.
Yeah.
But they don't tell you what the parameters of actually invoking the chips are in the first place.
It is really interesting.
It's almost like the opposite of like the Tesla approach.
Well, they'll get on stage and be like, yeah, your car will just be able to drive on any street at any time all the time.
It'll fly.
And you're like, wait, all the time.
And you're like, well, they'll be.
be some roads where you ask it and it'll mess up and you'll have to like take control and then
turn it back on later. But like just for the sake of simplicity, like it'll work all the time
on everything. And you're like, geez, that's a big claim. And Google's on the other side like,
yeah, so if you wanted to book a concert ticket after you see a poster that has all the details
for the concert dates and times on it. Yeah. And you take a picture of it with our app and then you
enable the permissions. It'll probably book those tickets for you. And the concert's on
ticket master. And you went into the set of it. And you, you went into the set of it.
and you checked it on.
Yeah, it's, it's ironic to me
because I feel like the way
that Gemini has been pitched in the past
has been, Google understands
that's on your screen.
It agentically reads what's happening on your phone.
You don't need to have these app hooks
like Apple has.
Like Siri, these developers,
build in these API tools
to make it so Siri can access these apps
and agentically use the apps for you.
And Google's mentality,
it seems like what they've been pitching
is that you don't really have to do any of this
and Gemini just knows what's happening
and it can just figure it out.
But that's not what they're shipping with Gemini intelligence,
proactive assistance.
It's very specific.
It feels like AI, the dream AI for so long is like,
I want a personal assistant that knows everything about me.
Every AI that I've seen has felt like you hire the personal assistant
and it is their first day every single day
where they're way too scared to do anything.
It's like if you ask your assistant to like fix the grocery list
and they're like, oh, yeah, yeah, I got that.
What kind of butter are you like?
Oh, is it okay if I get 2% milk?
Oh, okay, cool.
Prime or select choice?
Steak, okay.
Just like, it has to ask you every single thing to that point.
It's like, I'm just kind of doing this myself.
It reminds me of my first week ever working here,
and I felt like I had to ask you permission for every single small thing that I wanted to do.
So theoretically, there's a time where you get over that hump,
but it knows all your preferences, and then it's really good.
And I want to give them a little credit because I'd rather that happen
then it just go full blown.
For sure.
On the other side, Google,
this is a little off topic,
but I had my first time
where Google, at least I noticed,
took a stack of photos
and did the face swap thing
without telling me about it.
I thought best take was an option.
And I took three pictures really quick
of Lane and Owen
where one Owen's looking,
one's Lane looking,
and then it added a third one,
sorry, I took two,
and then added the third one.
And I didn't even notice,
but like this little tiny pop-up
game that went like, this is the best take.
It's using two photos.
And I was like, wait, wait.
And then that disappeared.
And I clicked another little icon that's just like an image, a little badge.
Yeah.
And it said it did that.
And I was like, I did not want you to do that.
I am fine.
I was pro that thing.
If you're picking it, but don't do it without me ask.
Yeah.
And now my gallery is the fake photo, which was like, it was kind of funny of the one of
Lane smiling in Owen's head in like a blur because he's like ripping around.
So it's funny.
That's the exact demo that they would have given, like, when they unveiled that feature was you take three photos and two of them have good faces.
Yep.
And let me choose.
And let me choose.
Yes.
He chose for you.
Yeah.
So anyway, I don't know.
I just felt that it was weird.
And the Gemini Intelligence Product of Assistance was like a big part of this launch.
And it's just such a specific thing that is probably going to work for like two CEOs and Silicon Valley and nobody else.
Yeah.
And they're going to think it's a huge success.
Yeah.
Because it works kind of sometimes.
Yeah.
Yeah, but your point about the pros just being like not that different.
Like I was very impressed with the camera quality.
Yeah.
I feel like the cameras actually got significantly better this year.
They're really good.
They are really good cameras.
I've taken, we had the eclipse, we went to Spain, then I went to Ireland for a week,
and then I've come back here.
And I've, I just left on a 50 megapixel mode.
Yeah.
Just haven't really had any issues, and she's been crushing photos all the time.
Although every time you take a 50 megapixel photo now, it has a little thing that's like processing
high-rise image.
it lasts like five seconds.
It takes a little bit.
But I usually am just snapping and then putting my phone away.
And so when I go check it later, it's all there.
That's true.
So that's true.
This, uh, you not recommending the pro one feels like Pixel has done this before.
I think on like the seven, the six or the seven.
Don't, no one stop everybody.
No one, we, no one made the meme to audio listeners.
But the problem was is back then, both of the phones felt like good deals where I'm
pretty sure the pro at that point cost as much as the regular does now.
Yeah, it was like a $6.99 or like $599 to $899 difference.
Yeah, I remember that specifically.
Yeah.
My framing was slightly different.
I remember back then, my framing, because I got crap for this, but I was saying the,
the base pixel is such a good deal that it makes the also good, also good deal
pro look like not a good deal.
Because they're right next to each other and you're like, oh, why would I get that?
This base one is an incredible deal.
So people heard that and they were like, why are you calling the pro a bad deal?
I'm not.
I'm just saying next to the base one, that's an amazing deal.
Now in 2026, I'm saying this base pixel is the only one that I could theoretically call
a good enough deal.
And then the further you go from that base pixel, the worse it gets clearly not a good deal.
Yeah.
And it's fine because phones in 2026 are probably just not a good deal.
a good deal in the first place with this
RAM shortage, but yeah, that's
where we're at. I heard a lot of people being like, at
this point, just by the 10A.
Like, the 10A is probably close enough to the 11.
Yeah, or just
get the 10?
Yeah, just by a used
10 or something. I don't know. People need to buy
more used tech, by the way.
Like, we need to stop always
needing to buy the newest, newest, newest,
especially when they get seven years of software updates.
I also find it funny because if you go to
the Google store right now,
I haven't found a single place that just lists it as $899.
It always says from $3.99 with $899 crossed off.
Like they are putting some wild trading deals and they are just trying to make it seem like.
Which, to be fair, Adam got the 512 gigabyte pro for $49 by trading in his.
He traded in Zuri for it.
No, just traded in the S26 Ultra and you get a slightly worse phone.
Yeah, the S26 Ultra, isn't that like a $1,100?
Yeah, but Adam bought the 512 gig version of a pro phone.
So that phone is, what, $13.99 or something?
$12.99?
$49?
It came with like a pre-order deal where you get it X amount off.
And it was cheaper through Google Fy.
Yeah, and it was cheap.
Had I gotten to $256, I think I would have gotten money back.
They would have owed me.
He's giving you cash on the spot.
Please, Dick Ripsxel.
Adam has some bookies ready to break his ankles somewhere.
There's, he's in debt for something that he doesn't.
know about. Yeah. Well, he's going to have that pixel for two weeks and then he's going to
trade in for the iPhone fold. So no, because Apple doesn't give good trading deals on pixels.
They don't care about us. That's true. The pixel they spit on pixels, dude. We'll recycle that
for you. Yeah. Yeah, we'll recycle for you for free. Um, okay, last thing I want to say about
the pixel. I just want to bring up the looks. No, no, no, no. Camera looks, whatever,
but the highlight thing. We just, we didn't really talk about it substantially. Did you notice how
the flash is way less bright because of highlight? Yeah, I didn't notice that until like yesterday
the day before, I went to use the flashlight as a torch in the dark because I couldn't see.
And I turned it all the way down because you can adjust the brightness.
And I was like, whoa, this gets really dim.
And I turned it back up and I was like, wait.
This doesn't get very bright.
Do you think that's because it's using less LEDs or because the diffusion is so strong on it to make it seem more whimsical?
Less LEDs.
Yeah, because it's now giving a big section of what's behind that diffusion to highlight.
Yeah, which doesn't...
Because usually over the flash
has this kind of like lens looking.
Yeah.
But the...
Can I see one of the...
Yeah, usually it's like a fove.
It's like not a lens.
It's just like a super diffused circle.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's dimmer.
It's dimmer and highlights
completely and totally useless.
Except for people who have their phone face down
and get lots of phone calls.
From their favorite.
There's somebody out there who's like,
yay, finally.
a feature that I'll use.
But if I getting a phone call,
you can see this,
I never have my phone face down.
Yeah.
I don't know, man.
I have my phone face down a lot,
but I don't get phone calls at all.
Yep.
Like,
if I got a phone call,
it's a spam call.
So,
yeah.
My pitch to Marquez for an intro skit for this review was,
um,
him like setting up his mom as like the color green or whatever so that he never
misses her calls whenever he's working.
And it's just him working in all these scenarios and it's never blinking,
never blinking,
never blinking. And then it finally lights up. He's like, oh, my mom's calling. And he picks up and she goes,
I've been texting you for three hours. Where are you? Why have you not answered? Yeah. The only time
I have my phone face down is when I'm like getting dinner or drink with a friend. And it's like a sign of
respect to put your phone face down. Yeah. It's reformative. It's performative. It's performative.
It's performative. I take it out of my pocket and I put it face down on the table. Literally.
It's not using my phone. It's not different than keeping in your pocket. It's, it's
performative. Yeah. It's funny. So anyway, that's all I wanted to say. Well, there was a
down and they found that
all of the LEDs inside are
RGB. So why?
Yeah. So that's that was the thing that we were
talking about on the pod in Spain, which is
that red isn't one of the colors,
which seems like it should be.
And it could be. And it absolutely
could be. They just didn't
make it one of the colors.
So strange. Somebody vibe coded
like a highlight app
that makes it light up for notifications and stuff.
They let you choose whatever color you
want, including red.
So I don't know why Google is so against red,
but they just hate red.
This is one of those things where like,
this is like a multi,
multi-trillion dollar company,
and they've announced this new feature.
And sometimes there's like in cars, this happens,
where we'd be like,
oh, there's a tuner community out there
who's like, oh, we have different spring rates
and different accessories for the car
to make it better.
And you're like, what do you think you know
that BMW doesn't know?
Like, are you really going to make a car better
than the manufacturer?
And you're like, yeah, probably not.
but it's just the way we like it.
But then we get to this phone and we're like, yeah,
we're going to make it way better than Google ever thought to make it
because somehow they completely missed like 75% of the functionality that this could have had.
Overnight, by the way.
Like someone vibe coded this.
And I'm like, in a day.
If they vibe coded it, like couldn't Google just add like a,
and now they're like we're thinking about adding functionality for text messages and Google messages.
And I'm like, what?
Knowing the way that Google works.
What?
Somebody at Google said that.
And then they said it in a way that hopefully it would get back to the engineering team that is supposed to make that happen.
Because they don't even talk.
They don't even know.
They don't even talk to each other.
They don't even know who that guy is.
And so that team's going to see it and they'll be like, oh, I should make this work with Google messages.
Okay.
Then there's 30 layers of red tape.
And then they'll have to approve it.
And there's just like another building of people who are like, what's Google messages?
I thought we had seven other messages.
I thought we used hangouts.
Yeah.
And that app couldn't just change the colors.
It could do different apps doing different things.
Yeah, like, it could do everything.
To be fair, it had to be like side-loaded.
And I thought I read that every time you rebooted your phone,
you had to reboot the app or something.
It seemed very complicated.
With Shizuku, I think it's called, is that app that lets you install apps like these?
It's annoying and difficult for sure.
It took me like an hour and a half.
I kept walking over to Andrew like, okay, text me now.
And I put the phone down on his desk and he would text me and it would vibrate and nothing would happen.
It never worked.
We got to work eventually.
Yeah.
But it was more to us.
proof that all of the things could have happened on this phone, especially when you are the person who makes the phone and could have a couple of colors.
If Google was not a multi-trillion dollar company, they could have seen this backlash and then like made it work within a day or two.
And they could have had a really good community.
That would be great PR to be like, you're right.
It would have been amazing PR to be like, you were releasing an update next week that has all this functionality.
Highlight feels like the true, did they even test this?
They did not.
At all.
Usually when companies are launching big features, they have internal focus groups, they have all
such a testing that they do ahead of time with like groups inside the company to make sure
they're not missing anything and it would be used the way they think customers will use it.
This didn't get that, clearly.
I don't even want to blame engineers because it seems so obvious that I have to assume one engineer
got the job of like, oh, I'm going to make the defaults for these five colors.
Like someone else must be working on the color wheel.
Like my job must just be the favorites or the defaults.
Someone else has the color.
You know, it's great.
I can't wait to see the finished feature.
At our hands-on event, they had a giant pixel camera bar on the wall,
and you could hit a big button, and it would make highlight glow with, like, the Gemini
colors.
And I'm like, the prop designer did a lot of worse.
They got a good job.
Marketing team saw the pitch and was like, oh, yeah, we'll make this.
We'll make this look cool.
Did we ever get any clarity into, like, the color wheel filter?
No, it wasn't that.
It's a circle of LED lights, and each of those LEDs are RGB.
Yeah.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
It's not the color wheel.
Yeah.
The color wheel.
You got me.
Thank you, everyone.
You're welcome.
You want to know my conspiracy theory for this?
What?
I think they're saving it for a pixel drop.
Do they're, you either do DLC?
A feature to be like, oh, look at this.
And a whole new thing your phone can do in two months, like in December.
It's called red.
It's called red.
I think they should have, and this is maybe, I'm not the expert.
I don't work for Google, but I think they should have made this work for messages.
phone calls, a whole bunch of other apps,
you should have a bunch of colors
and a bunch of customization.
And then in future drops,
you can hear what other people would like
to be able to do with it
that's more creative,
that wouldn't obviously be stuff
that we think of,
and then add that later.
In the Nexus days,
we could do whatever the hell we wanted.
The glowing trackball
from what the, literally the first Nexus one.
This X, the S, the very first Nexus phone.
I think what makes this more frustrating
is Google themselves
kind of did that weird.
was it in i.O. where they showed a bunch of clips and there was the guy in the mirror holding
his pixel and we all thought pixel glow was going to be around the camera bar. So we were all like,
that's going to be so nuts. And then that was our expectations. Now we went down to just little
dot and we were like, okay, it's still a notification L.A. It can be sick. And then they gave us a five
color call only circle. And that's my thing is that the pixel glow thing has been, it was leaked like
six months early. They had so much time to add any function.
And for six months, they were like, should we add green?
What about?
How about yellow?
What's your favorite color?
White.
What if you're talking to Gemini without looking at your screen?
That's all they care about.
You hit the nail in the head.
They don't want LED notifications.
But nobody does that.
They want Gemini.
I sometimes use Gemini voice mode, but I like to see what it says on the screen while I'm using it.
Maybe this is the proxy for exactly how Google thinks about the pixel, which is it's just a vessel for Gemini.
And if you put this phone across the room face up and you say, hey, gee, then you see the light turn on and you're like, all right, I'm talking to it.
And then it's responding.
But they must believe that people are talking to Gemini so often that when it's face down, they still want to make sure it's hearing them.
So they add a little light on the back so we can make sure everyone knows, okay, I'm talking to Gemini and it's face down now.
That's the thing that they think.
It's at least the user behavior they want.
Yeah.
I've thought a lot about like they're kind of getting back to their whole ambient computing thing.
with like Google Home and now the AI is just a vessel to make the MBA computing work
because they release the new smart speaker and everything and they're trying to put more
surfaces in your life that you can interact with Gemini through. So it makes sense to have your
phone be one of those surfaces and have it be able, you be able to actually see when you're
interacting with Gemini all the time. It's just that I just don't think that that's a user
interaction that people do naturally. It's my phone is so rarely face down like this. And if your
phone lights up when you say hey G on the screen that's not a problem like I don't I don't see why
why would you have it phased out I don't know it's like maybe see if you say hey G at your house
you can tell if you're speaking to your phone or your your yeah but your phone would light up anyway
if you did that yeah I sort of understand like the narrative point of like giving your phone
a thing that's like just for Gemini like it makes a statement that like Gemini is that they care
no that and more than that it's like it's like it's this standard
alone thing that like you say is ambient it's always there and it will appear in this spot like this is it's
it's a narrative storytelling thing i think it's stupid but i will say i think i think i get it i don't mind
that it can be that um signal for jemini if your phone is down i have my phone down all the time
that's why i want this to be a notification dot the thing is is don't ship it as the thing you all
expect the people to use it for and then half-ass the rest of it ship a good thing that most people will
use and then there's the option of the Gemini thing.
I think more people use Gemini if they're all in the customizations of highlight of,
I can make my mom text message this color and I can make any important people from
work calling this color.
If you can do all that customization, then you'll see the Gemini tab and what it can do face
down and you're probably more likely to actually use the feature.
Instead, they're forcing it down our throats and pretending to throw us a bone that's half
chewed.
This is a question that I want to ask the Google engineers.
of all of the face-down pixels in the world,
do you think more people get text messages?
Or use Gemini?
Ugh.
And I know what they want it to be,
but what do you really think?
What do you really think?
They're getting text from Gemini,
because Gemini's in Google messages now.
I feel like the only way the engineers of the PMs
were able to get this feature
is by tying it to Gemini in some way.
You have to get the feature approved
by the higher-ups,
which means it has to be a Gemini feature first.
That's probably true.
Yeah, because when Microsoft made them dance or whatever, they went out and they were like, oh, we're an AI first company now.
They literally restructured Android around Gemini.
So I bet you they have some sort of benchmark where they have to connect it to Gemini.
Every new feature probably has to be connected to Gemini in some way.
Which is why the GPU of TensorFlow never gets better.
Because it doesn't help Gemini at all.
And there are still 20,000 leagues under.
Yeah, but their TPUs got better.
Their TPUs got better, and that's why Gemini is faster, and all the AI stuff is doing better.
But have you seen the benchmark results?
Yeah, it's bad.
Oh, my God.
And I will say, I will say, I do want to note that I was, I kind of take back part of what I said on our eclipse week episode where I was like, I don't take it back.
I, look, I said what I said.
I still think that Google's, why are you booing me?
I'm right.
I still think that Google's mentality is we're focused on AI, we're focused on Gemini.
were not focusing on the fastest single thread CPU speed for your Genshin impact, right?
That's not what they're benchmarking it against.
They're not making a One Plus phone.
But when I was reviewing this phone, there was some stuttering.
And I was like, oh, like in Google Maps, Google Maps would kind of like lag and sometimes
stutter.
And I was like, I haven't experienced this on a phone in a while.
On a new phone.
On a new phone.
On a brand new $1,000 phone.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So it wasn't like a lot, but it was enough where I was like, oh, I would not, this would not happen on a regular phone.
So I think what you're saying is TensorFlow can't handle more than five colors in Highlight.
That's probably the, that's probably the reason.
GPU is not good enough.
Yeah.
That's the why.
AIs don't know how to sell a strawberry.
There's no way that they know what the color red is.
You know what I mean?
Yeah, the GPU is a crying shame on TensorFlow.
Well, you know, it's not a crying shame.
You'll be fine.
What?
Well, actually, TBD.
We got the S27 Ultra
Leaks, the design specifically
This is so early
And I don't know
People are mostly
Just commentating on the fact
That it's a camera plateau now
Instead of a camera bar
Actually, honestly the Ultra
Didn't have a bar at all
It was just like the ring
Sticking out the back
Yes
And then like the little plateau
Around each ring
Now it's just a big camera mesa
Which you know
I was literally about to search
synonym for plateau
It's a big camera mesa
Kind of like the iPhone
They'll name it space something
I feel like
The Space something I feel like
The Space
Space Zoom. Space Zoom, Mesa.
I'm just excited that this series won't look exactly the same as the last five years.
This thing has not changed what feels like in forever.
So just the fact that it's different, I'm like, whoa, cool.
I can maybe be excited.
I think that's why.
They're like, yeah, let's change the look just a little bit so we can say we change the look just a little bit.
Yeah.
I guess.
Camera plato.
So for audio listeners, big old camera plateau on the top.
Mesa.
Mesa.
Now instead of three cameras down the left side, we have two cameras left aligned.
And then it almost looks like to the right of it, it looks like the camera bar from the iPhone X, right?
Like two cameras in one singular pill with a flash in between.
Potentially camera and sensor.
It kind of looks like a time of flight sensor.
A time of flight sensor flash camera.
And then the right half of the plateau completely bare.
I don't know why, but I kind of dig it.
Weirdly bare.
really bare.
It's because they don't want it to wobble anymore.
The wobble was crazy.
That's actually valid.
Although if this lens sticks out far enough, it will still wobble.
Oh, yeah, true.
Yeah, but we can't tell that yet.
Not as much.
It's definitely sticking out.
It's definitely a wobble.
Maybe it'll be like the iPhone air and the whole phone will be in the right side of the Mesa.
You have to assume they're stacking something in there.
There's probably one telephoto that folds over sideways, which goes behind the rest of the
Mesa, there's probably, I don't know, some GPU up there, which the tensor doesn't have.
I like it better than the three vertical cameras.
I think, yeah, no, I don't mind it.
There's a lot of haters because it's, oh, the iPhone, iPhone, bad, Android good.
But I don't know everyone credits the iPhone for the plateau.
Yeah, we actually had way longer.
That's actually a million things with it.
But now that the iPhone has it, that's the way people react to it.
That's true.
I think the people who are mad comparing it to the iPhone probably all.
aren't the actual iPhone.
The iPhone people who would call this iPhone Saturday
don't give a shit about this phone.
So it's just Android people hating iPhones so much
that they themselves are comparing it to an iPhone.
Yeah, I actually like camera mesas
slash visors because I've said it before.
That's where I like rest my finger on the back of the phone.
It's a little thing.
It's a subtle thing.
Do you want to call it the Butte?
Because a beaut is a flat top-till similar to a mesa,
but typically smaller and taller than it is wide.
No.
I think a beaut is, yeah, I think this is,
a Mesa more than a Butte.
Yeah, I guess you're right.
This may be, maybe this is a Mesa on the pixel.
What are you talking about with the
Jaume being?
What?
The 11T?
The 11th.
There's been like a Xiaomi, it was,
it was a Xiaomi or Huawei did one with a whole ass screen on that.
That was a shot,
the Xiaomi something ultra.
There was a Pocophone that we,
that had a giant like full width wise.
I know, but that came out after the iPhone.
No, it didn't.
The 17 Pro came out after the iPhone.
I remember.
The Xiaomi 11T.
Ultra is the one that...
There are ones from Fargo, my little iPhone boy.
Back in my day.
Show me 11 Ultra.
Yeah, no, I see.
11T.
You're right.
I was, I take it all back.
That is a...
What was the Among Us Pocophone?
Oh.
Yeah, that was a long time.
Yeah.
That...
Damn, you old is ultra do the iPhone.
Yeah.
Sure.
Damn, they stole it from Apple three years before Appleton.
You know,
I wonder sometimes, whatever happened to the camera, the selfie camera cutouts being moved to under the display.
Remember that?
Yeah.
Remember there was a time where it's true?
It's eventually going to go to zero and it's going to be invisible.
Well, they do that on the full, on the, the, the, Amazon.
That was the last fold?
They did, and then they stopped and went back to a whole punch cutout.
They did?
Yeah.
It was probably just too hazy.
And I thought that they committed to it because they thought they had a path to, like, a good selfie camera.
Apparently not.
But you just don't see that.
that anymore. Maybe they just really don't care.
I think it's true.
The Bezzle video you made, I just don't, the screen to
body ratio died.
Like, no one cares about that anymore.
I think we're fine with the little dot
in it. I think also selfie cameras
became way more important.
So taking the hit on
the screen list. That's true.
I think that selfie cameras have been important for a long
time and I think they realized that
nobody was willing to take that massive
hit to get the underscreen
selfie camera. And then
nobody was willing to, like, put in the work to make it a really, really good underscreen
selfie camera because nobody was making them anymore.
Yeah.
So we are all just like, okay, there's never any useful UI up in the top or in the corner.
They used to all be in the corner.
Yeah.
Now they're in the top middle.
Yeah.
And we're just like fine with the whole punch cut out.
Yeah.
By the way, something else that the Pixel 11 Pro does very well is the selfie camera is really good.
Yeah.
I think it's the same one from last year, but it's really good.
Yeah, it is really good.
It's really good.
It's really good.
The 5x lens, too, is five.
The 5x lens is way better than it was last year.
Yeah.
Am I going to keep using the pixel?
Join me.
This is what happens to me every year.
I know, me too.
I use it for like three months and I'm like, I think I'm a full-time pixeler.
And then I'll go back to the one-plus 15.
Oh, right.
Phones can be fast.
Listen, if you just like accept that this cage is golden, it's a beautiful life.
Well, now that one-plus is practically dead everywhere but India.
I feel like the one-plus 15 is going to be the last, like, true flagship one-plus phone that you're going to be able to have.
I think I'm going to end up with the S-27 Ultra.
to bury you with the one plus 15.
Is that a threat?
That's the phone I've used the most
in the past, like, three years probably.
Damn.
Yeah.
That's crazy.
Anyway.
Anyway.
All right.
We should take a quick break.
We have way more brand new tech to talk about
because it's that time of year.
But before we take that break,
trivia time.
All right.
I had a whole question about
where the,
where the front facing camera was on pixel phones.
But all this talk about a company making a feature,
a.k.a. highlight that they wanted users to use in a certain way,
and users didn't use it that way and they didn't adapt.
Maybe we want to pivot to one of my favorite trivia fact ever
about one of the greatest products ever made, WD40.
Agree.
What was it originally?
No, hard agree.
Okay.
And, and real WD.
40 fans may know that while it is popularly used as an industrial lubricant, it was not originally
developed as an industrial lubricant.
So my question to my three-waveform host today, what does the WD in WD 40s fan for?
Why can it just be what was it developed for?
Because that's what it was developed for.
Wombo.
Wombo-dumbo.
That's it.
David!
Wumbo-dumbo-40.
I have a guess.
I weirdly only knew the first half of the,
this trivia effect.
I knew that WD-40 wasn't originally just supposed to be a lubricant, but I don't know the
other half, which is what was it supposed to be?
I know what it's supposed to be.
I just don't think I know what that stands for.
If you know what it's supposed to be, okay.
It should, you probably can arrive at the WD.
Yeah.
I have a guess.
Wombo.
All right.
Well, answers will be at the end of the show, like usual.
We'll be right back.

All right, welcome back.
I just want to ask you guys a question real quick.
Yep.
I know that when I was out, you guys covered the new YouTube views counting metric.
Oh, okay.
Viewflation, as I've been calling it in the office.
Well, we have published a video since the beginning of viewflation.
So I'm curious what you guys think the difference is in engaged views versus publicly counted views on our newest video.
on the Bezillus concept phone.
The public view counter is 2.391 million views.
What is the amount of engaged views?
20% difference?
Like 80% of that?
Yeah, I'm going 1.8.
1.8?
I saw, I think Harper posted this at like 1 million.
Were you big?
And it wasn't a big difference, so I don't know what it would be.
Like 100,000 view difference.
I don't think it's very much.
But I have insider knowledge.
I said, that's cheating.
I saw that too.
Just pretend you did.
Yeah, but there's no.
Wait, what?
I don't lie to our audience, like all of you guys.
Any guesses over there?
What is an engaged view?
It's like 20 seconds.
An engaged view is the original method.
There's no metric.
So there is no default.
It's basically YouTube determined that you are a real person who watched it for more than a split second
and actually watched the video.
More than a frame.
Yeah.
I always in my head felt like it was like eight or nine seconds, but I don't know why.
It used to be seven a long time ago, I think, unless I'm lying.
YouTube will always say there was never any specific number, aka we just aren't telling you.
I think that video probably has like 1.6 million engaged views.
Okay, so again, the actual public counted views is 2.391 million.
The actual engaged views is 2.354 million.
Oh my God.
So it only added about 50,000 views to the view counter on a 2.3 million view video.
So hardly a fraction of what we thought, at least in this one case, we have a very small sample size of one single video, but...
Wait, I have another question.
Yeah.
So what is your impression to click rate?
My click-through rate is 8%.
Oh.
Which is just a ratio of impressions to click.
So 22 million impressions.
Okay.
Yeah.
So that's normal.
Interesting.
For this age of a video, two days old.
But yeah.
Interesting.
I think we'll see different types of videos have bigger ratios.
Like older videos might start to find that they separate more different genre videos that get like suggested a lot.
Might get a lot of like hover auto plays.
So we'll see how that goes.
I'm interested in channels that like for real clickbait because a lot of times if something seems really crazy in the thumbnail, one of the things you do is you hover it to then see that you can immediately tell the video is nothing like what the thumbnails like and then be like, I'm not watching this.
Like a breaking news.
Yeah, something like that.
TBD.
Anyway, speaking of breaking news, we did get some new products from the fruit company in Cooper Tino.
New Macs, Mac Mini and Mac Studio.
These two also have new chips.
So it's kind of a new computer story, but mostly a new chip story.
The M6 chip is out already, just the base M6.
So we have a new M6 Mac Mini.
It's a two-nometer chip.
That's very exciting.
And there's also a new M540.
Pro Mac Mini.
There's also a new M5 Ultra Chip, finally.
And they shoved it in a Mac Studio, and oh my God, it has all the things.
I may or may not have pre-ordered an M5 Ultra Mac Studio already, because it's a studio.
I'm going to go by, wouldn't I?
So, okay, just to summarize, there are two new chips.
There's an M6 chip, and there's an M5 Ultra Chip.
And with those new chips, we get a couple of new computers.
They've refreshed the Mac Mini.
So now there's an M6 Mac Mini,
and they're throwing in M5 Pro into the Mac Mini,
which is also a new computer.
And there's a new Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra.
No other machine got the M5 Ultra,
but that's where the M5 Ultra goes.
So those are the new computers that we can talk about.
I think the most interesting one is probably the base M6 Mac Mini,
because, God, that used to be like the deal of the century
for a solid six months or however long it was,
that you could get one for $500.
The base Mac Mini was one of the best.
Best deals in the tech world.
They update it to M6.
Now the base Mac Mini costs $900.
Yeah.
Which is not even...
It's still...
It's almost double.
It's still an amazing computer.
Again, we're in the era of cost inflation, of like everything costs more now, and also,
you know, it's going to be a good computer, but also a better computer.
So there's lots more to talk about.
I think M6 is going to basically be the fastest single thread chip Apple makes.
I mean, it should be, right, other than maybe the iPhone.
And so there's going to be a phenomenal computer, much more capable than the previous one.
But yeah, not even close to as cheap.
Yeah.
Two nanometers now, 170 gigabytes per second unified memory, 12-core GPU, double the neural engine, I believe, and lots of improvement over.
They usually compare it to M1.
So they're saying, oh, yeah, it's two and a half times faster than M1, because they don't compare it to the last gen anymore.
They always compare it to the beginning of Apple Silicon.
They said 1.2 times faster, multi-threaded performance compared to M5.
Great.
Okay.
So, yeah, 1.2.
So 20% faster multi-thread, but obviously much, much faster than M1.
So great, M6 chip.
Now in the future, we can expect to see M6 Pro and M6 Max in that touchscreen MacBook Pro.
Yes, which means it could possibly still come out this year.
I was worried that it was going to get pushed to the next year.
I think so.
I think I'm expecting like an October type of event for this touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro.
I don't even want to know how much it's going to cost, but I do want it.
It's going to cost all of it.
Especially if they put an ultra chip in it.
They can't possibly do that.
Yeah, probably not.
You're right.
But speaking of the ultra chip, that M5 Ultra, oh my God, it's powerful.
But can I just say this, so we talked about price on Mac Mini
and how it's so much more expensive now.
And even in the press release of it,
Mini has always been this like, great for students, great for creators.
They peppered in so much more talk about LLMs and AI in the press release about using this,
which is probably one of the main reasons it's so high.
It's actually, it's so funny that Twitter clip that's going around of that guy like unpacking all those laptops to like put in his AI server rack.
So sad.
Two days before this got announced.
And they're all like, curse videos.
That guy deserved that.
But this was a surprise announcement.
Like it came out of nowhere.
It was, I was going to say this before.
The surprise of it was Miles talking to Marquez about, I think, an autofocus video.
And Marquez just completely stopped listening to Miles.
And I heard Miles continue to drag on and then go, oh,
Wait, what is that?
Because Marquez had on his screen, the new minis getting launched out of nowhere.
When Marquez posted in Slack, he said, they dropped this all.
And I said, what?
Because I think, like, three hours earlier, we saw, like, a rumor that they may announce it before the September event.
And they're like, oh, that would be interesting.
Oh, and they're here.
And they're here.
So they're here.
So they're here.
I may have also bought one.
Okay.
I mean, I want to see how good it is.
Do you want to talk about the Ultra Chip?
But, yeah, the M5 Ultra Chip as well.
So for those who don't know the Ultra Chip, it's been a long time since we got a new one.
I think M3 Ultra is the last one that we got, which was in a Mac Studio, and the Mac Pro was still on M2 Ultra.
So it shows how much they've really kept up to date with it.
But it's essentially fusing together two M5 Max chips.
And that gets you a solid, well, let me read this here, 64 core GPU, 30 core CPU, 32 core neural engine, and starting at 96 gigs of unified memory.
and up to 512 gigs of unified memory.
Starting at 96 gigs of RAM.
Yeah.
And I think it's a,
I think the number was like 1.2 terabytes per second.
1.2 terabytes of unified memory bandwidth, yeah.
It's just, yeah.
This is not a machine that, again, regular people or anyone,
even video editors are mostly going to have to clamor over it.
This is for people who have specific use cases with like,
oh, I need to run a massive local LLM in the unified memory,
or I need to like, you know,
that's pretty much it.
Yeah, well, that's for the unified memory part,
but for the massive GPU part,
this is like 3D rendering, intense color correction.
Obviously, video editing is like the low end
of what this thing is designed for.
It's what I'm going to be doing with it.
I want to see that benchmarks so bad.
Yeah, the benchmarks are going to be silly.
15 minute benchmark, or 50 minute video rendered in one minute.
I just can't wait.
I've been chasing real-time video.
exports my entire 8K career.
But we passed real time, didn't we?
Not exports.
Really?
So like a 10-minute video will take 20 minutes to export.
Which is awesome.
Like an 8K red raw transcode from all the chopped up timeline to all my graphics and effects
and transitions and color correction and sharpening and all of that, exporting a 10-minute
video in 20 minutes, that's pretty sick.
But I've been chasing the real-time export.
And I think this is going to get.
meaningfully closer to that.
Yeah.
So you can configure this with up to 512 gigabytes of RAM.
So on that note, which is crazy.
You can pre-order an M5 Ultra Mac Studio today.
Yeah.
And just for funsies, I went through and maxed everything out.
You can spend $18,300 on a Mac studio.
That does not include the 512 gigs of unified memory.
That only goes up to 256.
Oh.
So when they do drop the 5,300,000.
12 gig version for you local LLM freaks out there.
That's going to be a very, very expensive machine.
Now that's also 16 terabytes of internal memory.
Storage, storage.
Oh, holy shit.
16 terabytes of SSD.
Yeah.
Which sounds silly unless you work with massive video files.
So that's another reason why I'm so expensive.
I love videos.
Yeah, I'm a video file.
I need to humbly request another short where you explain what all the Macs and Ultra
chips me now. If you look at this script, I have everything wrong because I'm still so confused in
this. So much of this, I have the wrong chip name because not only is it confusing, but to then
release M6 base and then go M5 Ultra. Like, the release is just make it very confusing.
Am I the only one who finds this very simple and intuitive? Yes.
Base Pro Max Ultra, but then we also release things out of order. The only thing that makes it
confusing is the out of order release timing. But as far as like what's more.
capable, it's very clear.
I think it's also that they've just skipped some.
There's no M4 Ultra, right?
True.
They've skipped some.
Yeah.
So there's just like this random board of chips that.
There's a base chip.
You can put the base chip in any of the base stuff.
Like now it's M6, right?
So we have it in the Mac Mini.
I will expect to see an M6 iPad and an M6 Mac and IMac and like all the base stuff,
MacBook Air, right?
Yeah.
Then you have pro and max versions of the chip, which are a.
essentially doubling the GPU capabilities,
and I expect those to be in the pro-level stuff like MacBook Pro.
And then once in a while, if you're lucky,
you'll get an ultra version of a chip which fuses two maxes together,
and then you get the real freaky benchmark results
and extremely powerful Mac Studio and MacPro.
Once in a while, because you're lucky, is the reason it continues to be more confusing
because, and also, like, pro and Max, we're used to it together in this one term,
where now pro and Max is separate.
And, like, all of them are just good.
adjectives, they're not laddering adjectives.
Like all of those.
Ultra Max means the maximum.
Technically Max is maximum.
And then Ultra is two maximums.
That doesn't make sense.
That is fact.
That's true.
That is very true.
I guess I'm used to knowing that pro is a little above base and then Max is a little above
pro.
And then Ultra is above Max.
Pro Max.
That's the show.
Pro Max also.
Apple does do Pro Max too, which is annoying.
But anyway, I have also pre-ordered a max too.
Worth noting that because you say,
these are all pre-orders and they come out September 22nd, I believe.
That's a little while away.
Take your time, Apple.
Almost a month.
Take your time.
That's going to be after the September event.
That's just got to mean that the September event has so much stuff in it that they can't
toss this on at the end, but they wanted to still come out similar time.
I actually, I think two of that is happening.
One, and you guys mentioned this about the iPhone, I think the September event is heavy on
pro and fold.
Yeah.
And they wanted to spend so much time on the fold, especially, that they had to move some stuff
out of there, so they move the base iPhones completely out of the September event.
Makes sense.
To make a way to focus on the crazy stuff.
That's why I think we're going to see that in like spring or like early next year.
And then for the October event, which we typically see as like the pro computer event,
they're going to focus so much on new MacBook Pro with OLED, touchscreen, blah, blah,
that they needed to move some stuff out of there.
And so here we're getting Mac or Mac Mini and Mac Studio updates ahead of time, M6 chip ahead of time,
so that they can get to that and spend more time.
And visually, like, these are the least impressive.
Even though these are incredible iPhone fold is a folding iPhone you get to see new Macbooks.
Like, all these things are things you can see.
These are just little super powerful computers.
Yeah.
They really have some paradigm explanations to do for, like we've never had a folding iPhone.
They really have to explain to the public why they would want a folding iPhone for the first time ever.
And for the touchscreen MacBook Pro, it's been so many years of MacBook Pro not having touchscreens.
When they finally do one, they really are going to have to spend some time explaining and justifying.
Here's why we're making this.
Here's why you might want a touchscreen laptop.
So make some room in those events and then, yeah, move stuff until early next year.
Speaking of the Apple event.
Oh, yeah, I just got announced.
It did just get announced.
Live on the podcast.
It'll be September 9th.
It's Wednesday this year, which never happens.
It's always the second Tuesday, but it is Labor Day that Monday.
So I think that they just don't want people to travel on a holiday.
Can I comment on this graphic?
Yeah, I want to talk about it.
You see this graphic?
Yeah.
It looks like I just highlighted it with my mouse, but I didn't.
That's actually what it looks like.
Doesn't it kind of look like it was like a darker image that I highlighted?
To me, it reminds me of the sunshine-flavored LaCroix.
Wait, the iPhone's going to have highlight?
So the tagline this year is surprise and shine.
There's the Apple logo with sort of like this displacement effect and it's sort of glowing
and it has this like lens flare going around the the apple logo.
Strangely, I would have thought that they would have had some nod to the fold.
Yeah.
But I have no idea what this is going to be unless like, I don't know, maybe the torch is going to be like 30-10 brighter.
Why are we all calling it a torch?
Yeah, what the hell?
When did this happen?
It's a flashlight, people.
Mark Hess goes to the UK.
I guess none.
I missed it up now.
I missed it up this time.
Careful.
Careful, careful, Ellis.
Careful, Ellis.
I got torched for that last time, but it's all torch this.
Forch that.
I got torched for saying that last time, so be careful.
Yeah.
Yeah, so I don't know.
I don't know why they're calling it surprise and shine.
Like, what is it going to have to do with that?
Surprise and shine.
Surprise and that.
Well, it's a play on.
Nothing's really a surprise, unless there's a great thing.
Except that it was on a Wednesday.
Sure, yeah.
I mean, rise and shine.
Well, yeah.
It's a play on rise and shine.
So surprised.
The fold has to rise up when you open it.
Oh, yeah.
That is actually the best thing I've heard so far.
It might just be that.
It's going to have to rise open.
Rizers.
No, there's a wrong one.
Boo.
Well, they did announce one more thing.
They did.
Oh, God.
Not everything is affected by Remigdenin.
Yeah.
The polishing cloth at Apple is now $9.
It's less than half expensive.
Less than half the price.
What I'm confused about here, and we don't have confirmation yet.
It is a great polishing cloth.
It is a nice polishing cloth.
Is it smaller?
We're assuming it's smaller, right?
I don't know.
Unconfirmed.
It's unconfirmed because this store page has the overview of the polishing cloth.
It has what's in the box.
Importantly, the compatibility list.
Yeah.
A 50 plus model length list of compatibilities.
Nowhere does it say the dimensions of this polish and how.
That's really funny.
Oh, my goodness.
But based on the Apple logo, presumably the same size as the previous cloth, it is, I guess, takes up more space.
I think it's smaller.
It's $9.
Is the last, is the other one not?
available anymore. I don't think it is. If this was a bid to make people less mad about the
prices of everything else going up, it's working. That's all they had to do. They just had to make
the polishing cloth cheaper. And people used to meme it for $19. My hot take was always that it was
worth $19 because it's really good. Like it's a nano, you know, it's not a micro fiber. It's
nano fiber. I feel like it can be good and not worth $19. No, it has a fatal flaw, which is like
if your phone is not insane, if anything you wipe with it is not ridiculously, you know, it's not ridiculously
clean before you polish it, that cloth gets so disgusting and will never not be
That's also true, yeah.
The nanofibers get pretty.
The hot take is, maybe it's not even hot take.
It's not a good polishing glove.
Whoa.
Just as far as, it's good at polishing.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's good.
Yeah, exactly.
It's specifically good at like you have a clean surface you need to polish and it's already
the grit's gone.
You just need to polish it and make it shiny or super clean.
Then that's what it's good for.
Yeah, use sandpaper to get the rest of the stuff.
off.
I just use my, I just,
usually works like a charm.
Yeah, no, don't do that.
Don't do that.
No.
That's going to be a Jiff, unfortunately.
Yep.
Giff.
Giff, but yeah.
You go to the UK.
Sorry.
Anyway.
You go on the internet one time.
You go on the internet one time.
We should take a break.
All right, we got to take a break.
Yeah.
Trivia question?
Trivia question.
Why do you say like a question?
Of course we have a trivia question.
Trivia question.
Trivia.
Trivia.
All right, this one I'm stealing from Ellis
because I love it so much.
The pixel has taken many shapes and forms over the years,
but only two iterations of the pixel
have had the front-facing camera
in the top-left corner of the phone.
Oh.
What were they?
I know one of them.
Pixel, okay, so not Nexus.
Exactly.
There were two.
Okay.
And there were two.
Hold on.
Oh, I know both of these.
I think I know.
In the top-left corner of...
The phone.
Are we not counting foldables?
No.
Because in the insides,
screen of the foldable.
I'm going to say no.
You said top left?
Yeah, yeah, top left.
And you're using the turn.
Right.
Yeah.
Okay.
Okay.
Top left corner.
I know this.
Okay.
I know one of them.
Remember solely.
Don't.
We'll be right back.
We'll be right back.

All right, welcome back. This is a fun,
weird collaboration I just wanted to bring out.
So, Fitbit Air, as we all
know, I'm still rocking mine. It's
really gross now.
I should probably shower with it on.
I've been charging my whoop. In the shower?
No. I've not.
They tell you to.
Charging in the shower?
I'm pretty sure you are not supposed to do that.
That's insane.
No, you are.
Yeah, you can.
Every single time I take it off, I used to take the Wuboff to take a shower.
It would be like, no, you can charge it in the shower.
It sends you a notification.
It's like, it's waterproof.
Why would I ever want to do it?
Okay.
Anyway, we got a Fitbit Air update, which is kind of cool.
There is a Pokemon Sleep collaboration with the FitFit Air.
Because that's what we were waiting for.
Yeah.
So if you don't know what Pokemon Sleep is.
I don't.
You don't know what Pokemon Sleep is.
is. It's an app that is
mostly made for kids
to help them go to bed.
There's a snorlax, there's other
Pokemon you can collect.
For kids and David and I. Well, look.
I'm gonna get it. I would get a lot of
crap for saying this is for kids. It's just like
the robot movie, whatever. Anyway.
The robot movie.
It's just because
just because something is targeted
at kids doesn't mean only
kids can enjoy it. Okay.
Ah, I see. I feel like that's so like
Mr. Bees videos.
I don't enjoy those.
Marvel.
Marvel.
Spider-Man.
Not Marvel.
Not really Spider-Man.
Pokemon.
Pokemon's the perfect example.
It's targeted at kids, but I love Pokemon.
And I'm 31.
I'm turning to dust.
So anyway, they have a Pokemon sleep.
Pokemon sleep, it's an app that came out that basically it tracks your sleep.
And then the better you sleep, the more you can, like, befriend these Pokemon and level up the Pokemon and do stuff like that.
So it's like, it's a game you play when you wake up and you try to get a better sleep score.
And it's just trying to encourage kids to, like, go to bed and sleep better, right?
That's been out for a couple years.
Noble cause.
Noble cause.
I can't play this because I don't make it my head.
How do you?
Sorry.
We're tracking kids sleep?
Yeah.
I guess.
Yeah.
I don't know why that sounds crazy to me.
Also, I'm trying to prestige in Call of Duty.
I ain't sleeping as a kid.
Like, I'm not playing this game.
Well, it's probably for like six-year-olds, you know.
I was on Call of Duty.
I already received twice by six years old
Anyway, so strange collaboration
They are releasing a Pokemon Sleep band
The color is actually really nice
It's fantastic
It's like a really deep blue color
But it does
It's more Steph Curry colors than the Steph Curry band
Probably really, yeah
The Golden State Warriors are like blue and gold just like this
And this is more of the blue that the Golden State Warriors are
Yeah
It has a little tag on it that says Pokemon Sleep
which I don't think they should have added.
I think that's, the wordmark is a little bit ugly,
but it's got a sleeping Pikachu on it.
The word mark is weird.
It's weird to have a Pokemon Sleep Workmark on a band
that you're going to wear all day.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
When it says Pokemon Sleep,
unless the whole point is to only put this on
before you go to bed,
which is also a thing, I guess.
It is easy to change bands.
Yeah.
Yeah, but every day is crazy.
Yeah, I wouldn't do it every day.
It's pajama bands.
Pajama band.
Something that's cool about this, though,
is that they,
there's like four different Velcro notches,
on it. So the standard Fitbit air
it just one... Oh, I'm wrong.
Oh, I was going to say, I thought that looks exactly
the same. Investigative
journalism is
so back.
I didn't know that.
That's how it's cool about it. Nothing.
It's blue.
Four Velcro's.
I was wondering why the Velcro is in the script.
I...
I had only looked at this side of the Velcro,
but it turns out...
Yeah, never mind.
Anyway, I love...
like the dark blue color. That's all I got to say. It's nice. Yeah, they're doing an official
collaboration with Pokemon Sleep. Right now, on my iPhone, it doesn't want to integrate with
my Apple Health data or my Fitbit or my Google Health data yet. So it hasn't worked for me yet,
but it might also need an update that is not yet because this technically gets announced
tomorrow as of day of recording, but it will have already been announced by the time you
I hear about it.
Yeah.
So it's blue and doesn't have anything special about it's Velcro, which is unfortunate.
But I just wanted to mention that.
Thank you for introducing me to Pokemon's sleep because I'm still very confused about it.
But yeah, try it.
I don't know.
Maybe I'll like it.
I don't know.
Do they tie it into like the move at all?
Rest.
Oh, the move's not even called sleep?
No, it's called rest.
No, there's a move called sleep?
Isn't it a T.M?
No, there's not.
It's called rest.
I would know.
Sleep.
I'm a three one-year-old who likes poker.
You know, when you were-
Sleep powder is also my-
Sleep powder is a move.
Yeah.
I was sick all weekend
and I was playing Adams 3DS for a lot of it.
And you sang,
talking about Pokemon being for kids but enjoyed by adults,
made me think I was playing a Super Mario 3-D land.
Oh, hell yeah.
Quite, quite fun.
And the whole time I was thinking,
damn, these buttons are really small
until I had the realization like, right,
it's for children.
It's targeted at children.
We have to be clear about this because I love games.
I love Pokemon.
I love all this stuff.
I still play Pokemon TCG Pocket on my phone.
Yeah.
Because I will never stop, even if Alex abandoned me.
Anyway, we got to move on.
Real quick, this also going to announce this morning as of day of recording.
Nothing OS5.
It's a big update from them.
It's mostly a cohesion and sort of spring cleaning in the summer update that makes the animations better.
It makes them smoother.
There's refreshed typefaces, there's new icons, there's two new lock screen clocks.
It's sort of just like a visual refresh update, and it's making a lot of the things on the phone that were not cohesive, more cohesive.
I appreciate updates like this.
I like that Android 17 was a lot of this stuff.
It was a lot of like, hey, we've had stuff piling up in the corners that we're just going to finally get to it and clean it up and make sure it's all working nicely.
Yeah.
So if you make a skin for Android or if you make a ROM like nothing OS on top,
Yeah. You got to do that too.
Yeah. They also made the dedicated glyph app now.
So you don't have to just go into the settings and like find the glyph stuff.
That makes sense.
Which I appreciate. I think that's really helpful.
There's small things like if you scan a QR code with the camera open instead of the little icon of the link kind of moving with the QR code, it just gets a fixed, which is helpful.
To the bottom.
To like, I think, wherever you scanned it from.
Okay. I really like this new clock face widget where it's like,
text but all kind of, it almost looks like comicy.
And it can have like time, date, weather, you know, calendar things.
But it doesn't feel like all these difference.
It all feels cohesive in between it.
I think my favorite new feature, which is a Brandon feature through and through,
is that now there's this new collector widget.
So you can create a sticker out of anything that you take a photo of.
It will cut out the object and you can just stick that sticker on your home screen.
That is very brand.
Which is so awesome.
It's kind of safe.
It's really cool.
It's really cool.
It's just like whimsy for no reason, which I really appreciate.
Yeah.
So I don't know.
It's a nice update.
It's a nice update.
It would have been cooler if they explained it while not playing really terrible
pool and taking fake phone calls in that weird video they released.
Yeah, the explanation video was like a really long video where they didn't even get to the update
till six and a half minutes through.
And they're just playing pool the whole time, which is strange.
I think they're just trying to be more relatable.
They also released it on both the nothing YouTube channel and Carl Pays YouTube channel,
which I did not know existed.
Carl Pay, YouTube, confirmed.
Confirmed.
I mean, he does react.
He does make React videos, so he is a YouTuber.
Anyway, Open Beta is starting today as a day of recording.
It will have been two days ago by the time you guys hear this.
For Nothing Phone 3, and other devices will be rolling out over the coming months.
But they do have a public calendar for when that's happening.
So, yeah, just had to mention that.
Leave anything else before?
What is this?
I don't want to talk about something.
I got one more thing.
I've had a couple of things.
people ask me if I'm going to do this again and I wasn't going to but you know what now I will
if you're into premier league at all we're doing a waveform fantasy league Ellis is in it now I got him in
and he picked whole city for some reason uh as his squad so I picked whole city the week before
the league began and I've been riding nothing but highs ever since go tigers by the time you
listen to this episode they will have lost again but it's fine so if you want to join
link in the description it'll be fun Ellis and I are in there how many people can join
Is it like infinite?
Last time there were hundreds.
It's like there's no cap to it?
I don't think so.
I mean, I'm sure there is, but I don't think we've reached it.
I mean, aren't there only so many players in the league?
Or can you just pick?
I guess I don't know how it works.
It's not like normal fantasy where you draft someone and then no one else can get them.
It's you essentially like pick like a roster.
Like everyone can have the same roster if you're at it.
Okay, cool.
I feel like more people will.
Socialist as fantasy league.
It's happening to Marquez.
Oh, man.
I got to say, okay, I wasn't going to talk about this, but I have to.
After that reaction, you do.
So much of my feed on social media, on all social media, YouTube, Twitter, threads, Instagram is this like humanoid robot Olympics?
Have you guys seen this?
Yeah. And every one of them is a slightly different disaster.
Yeah.
And it's really, I have so many questions.
We don't have to get into it, but I'll just show you guys the one that.
It is so funny.
I'll put it in my, just, I just want you guys to think as you watch this.
in regular track and field, isn't it a lane violation to leave your lane?
Like you're not allowed to leave your lane in the race.
Well, Andrew leaves his lane at home all the time.
That's a great pun.
It's very sad.
But yeah, just watch this video.
And while you watch about it, while you watch this video, just think like,
I don't think you're allowed to leave your lane.
Andrew, we'll watch it on my game.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
These robots are so funny to watch running.
Oh, my God.
In a 100 meter race, you're not supposed to leave your lane.
For some reason, there is a competition happening in China
where bipedal robots have to run as fast as physically possible.
Four of those are the same one.
When one of them runs faster than a human, they'd be like,
it broke Usain Bolt's record, and it's like, well, it's a robot.
Yeah, but then it's slammed into a wall and exploded into 12 pieces.
They were really funny.
Yeah.
The best part of this is that they can't stop
and they have to have that giant padded wall where half of them just explode when they hit it.
They start from a stop,
start running, why can't they stop running?
Look at this one. They can only crash into
a wall. They all run past the finish
line and then 12 yards later
slam into a wall. They can only do the
straight away of the track. No, they have
100 meters. They have 200s. All the ones
we're watching here are just running straight and
cannot curve at all. It's so yeah, they got
some curved. The funniest thing is that after they
crash and break their legs, they carry them away
on stretchers. The stretches are great.
I don't know why there aren't robots carrying them
away on stretchers. Because they'd explode if they
did that. They slam into the wall for no.
funny. If you ever had any doubts about
China being really far-headed
human-eyed robots, just watch some of these
videos. Just Google World Humanoid
Robot games. Yeah.
On any social media, and you'll see
they are cooking.
Anyway, I think that's it. Some of them are boxing.
There's soccer, there's boxing. There's one
that did a clean and jerk, and it's just a robot
picking up a weight. How is that
a competition? Of course it can pick up the weight.
It's a robot. I don't know, man. Grip strength?
I don't know.
Grip strength? I'd program the motors to...
What was the robot?
I think it was Tesla bot where they're like, don't worry, can only deadlift like 40 pounds.
And that was supposed to make us feel like comfortable with it.
Yeah, it can only run X miles per hour and like pick up and grab strength.
Just zigzag. Just zigzag. You're fine.
Yeah, yeah. All right. We got to do trivia.
All right. Time for me to continually not get more trivia points.
Can I? Yeah. Marquez said something really funny me the other day, which was, don't worry, I would have gotten both the trivia questions wrong from last week.
Yeah.
And he apparently trusts you guys so little that his response to where is Texas Instruments headquarters was going to be Shenzhen.
China.
Honestly.
No, it's really smart.
If I was a Shenzhen manufacturing company, I would name my company Texas Instruments.
Exactly.
Either that or they would have just gotten acquired by a Chinese company right now.
Yeah.
I saw that slack message and it was one of the funniest things I've ever read.
It's kind of like how Hasa Blod is headquartered at the DJI headquarters.
in China.
Yeah.
So it's not that far out.
So anyway, I still have one trivia.
Yes, guys.
WD.40, what does the WD stand for?
Hint, it was the original manufacturer purpose.
Yeah.
Oh, wait.
You got this.
Does spelling count?
I just read Marquez's whiteboard and crazy.
There's so many things that could be Western Digital.
Yeah.
That's like one of them.
That's not my guess.
I'm just kidding.
That would be cute.
Who would guess Western Digital?
Wait, what?
Oh.
Okay, I wrote Western Digital.
Did you see him write that?
No, I didn't.
You just guessed that?
Markis and I think alike.
Just great minds.
We think of like a lot.
I wrote water deterrent.
I'm so close.
That's actually pretty good.
Uh-oh.
I wrote wet drying.
What do you mean?
How far behind?
What?
What do you mean wet drying?
Because like it's...
I don't know.
Is that a thing that happens?
Wet drying?
He means...
I see what he means.
Yeah, he's supposed to dry the wet.
You mean like how liquid chalk you like put the liquid on your hands and it makes them dry after it like evaporates because it's got alcohol?
Don't they call something?
I think that would be more like it dries something.
I thought wet dry was a thing.
Like you put a sponge on top of water and then you lift it up in the water.
That's just drying.
Yeah.
It's drying the wet.
What's the actual answer?
I appreciate that you guys are going to bat for me.
I don't really know what I'm at.
WD40 sounds better than D40.
Unfortunately, the answer is water.
Deterant.
Displacement.
Water displacement.
It was originally a coating for rockets to make sure they did not rust or corrode in their silos.
Does anyone want to guess what the 40 means?
That must be the density?
The density versus water?
No.
There's no like real confirmation on this, but allegedly it was the first.
40th iteration of the formula.
Oh. You know, I can displace water, too.
Yeah, you just hold on to the rocket.
I just jump into it.
Yes.
Wow, another non-point for me.
All right.
Next question.
But first, quick update on the score.
Marquez with Uno.
Andrew with three.
David with four.
Ha, ha, ha.
All right.
Question.
The pixel has taken many shapes and forms over the years, but only two iterations of the pixel
had the whole punch front-facing.
camera.
Yeah.
In the top left corner of the phone.
Yeah.
Where were they?
Do we want?
It's four individual phones.
If you give me any of the two,
that's what's confusing me now.
No, I'll explain it to you.
But you have to get two.
It can't be like one in one.
Yeah.
But I think that's why I'm confused,
which makes me think I got it wrong.
This is Google's fault.
This is Google's fault.
This is not my fault.
Okay, I'm doing great.
It's the Pixel ProMex.
What don't you understand?
All right, flip them and read.
What do we got?
All right.
What's the first?
The pixel six had it in the middle.
Okay, so I'm probably wrong.
So I said pixel six
No.
Pixel four's.
You wrote Pro?
The four didn't have it.
But you're not getting to point for that, sorry.
There wasn't a pixel 4 Pro.
X.
Four didn't have it?
Oh yeah.
That's solely though, which was...
Oh, you're right, yeah.
No, pixel 4 didn't have it.
So you're wrong.
Wait, what did I write Pixel 4?
What'd you guys write?
I wrote Pixel 5.
Correct.
Pixel 4 series, which was, it was just the 4A and 4AXL, wasn't it?
It was just the 4A.
It was the 4A.
4A5G.
Yeah.
Andrew, which was the 4AXL.
I wrote 5A, but it's because of the release dates I'm thinking of the...
The 5A had it.
I was...
Andrew gets the point.
I'm so smart.
So do I get a point for Pixel 5?
You do not.
Why?
The Pixel 5 had it.
He does.
Yeah, no, no, I said at the beginning you need to get two correct.
But he only got one correct.
No, he got both, five and five A.
They both have top left.
Oh, wow, nice.
I'm so mad.
Wow.
Well, I played, Andrew.
Did the A4 come out before the 5A?
Before the W40.
