Every kangaroo is kind of jacked like you.
That's true.
You ever pet a kangaroo?
No.
You ever seen a deer?
What?
Yes.
Kangaroos are just deer.
And then they just like use their tail to walk.
It's weird.
Anyway.
It is weird.
And then sometimes they get on all four legs.
Kangaroos are like deer, except they stand upright, hold their babies in their pouch
underneath.
No, they walk on all fours sometimes.
And it's like, it is weird.
It's like a weird, like, yeah, it's hella weird.
Yo, what is up, people of the internet?
Welcome back to another episode of the Wayform Podcast.
We're your hosts. I'm Marques.
I'm Andrew.
And I'm David.
It's good to be back. we have a pretty big news week my first week back which is very exciting jumping right
into it welcome back uh yeah we had the apple event so wait wait wait wait marquez what did
you do in australia oh yeah oh yeah well i did take a couple weeks to go to play the World Championships for Ultimate Frisbee.
And?
How did it go?
And we won.
Oh, let's go!
It went really well.
It went as well as it could have gone.
We actually, USA swept.
Yeah.
So every division.
So there's open, there's women's, and there's mixed.
And US won all the divisions.
Didn't go undefeated through the tournament.
It wasn't without a little bit of...
Who lost?
Women's team lost to Columbia in power pools.
Oh, wow.
And they were a very strong team.
I was telling you guys Columbia was good.
Yeah, Andrew was saying the whole time,
like, they need to watch out for Columbia's facts.
A lot of saying they got more oxygen in their lungs.
Exactly.
But they came through in the finals.
No, that'd be less.
Isn't that high altitude?
High altitude is less oxygen. Yeah, they operate better't that high altitude? High altitude is less oxygen.
Yeah, they operate better.
But their hearts are stronger because of less oxygen.
Yeah, so they're in Australia like,
they're like, oh, it's delicious.
I'm powerful.
This air is thick.
You also got bookends for the final point
in the championship.
So like he started on defense.
He's the one who created the turnover
and then scored the point.
That was dummy nice. That fun that was cool i'm not sure yet if that was real i kind of blacked out it's like the coolest thing you can do on d-line especially to win a game to win the tournament
to win worlds yeah that's insane it's like one of the coolest things that's insane yeah and then
they gave us the medals and there was like kangaroos on the horizon. And I was like, is this real?
It was so cool.
That literally sounds like a dream.
And then he got bit by a spider and went to the hospital.
Yeah, it was a good time.
That's what would happen to me for sure.
Actually, the next day I went and saw, that was the one like kind of tourism-y day with the team.
And we saw a bunch of like wildlife stuff.
Oh, is that where the koalas?
Went to a koala conservatory, I think is what it's called.
We saw koalas, which 95% of the koalas you see
are just half asleep in a tree
shoveling eucalyptus leaves into their mouth.
They're not doing much.
For some reason, the last 10%
were running around.
Have you seen koalas run around?
Never in my life. It's like watching a teddy
bear run. It's weird. It's like watching a teddy bear run.
It's weird.
It's surreal, actually.
Yeah.
So that happens.
They like snarl and bark at you too, right?
They make insane noises.
I don't know how to explain the noises they make,
but whatever you're thinking, it's not that.
It's kind of like a dinosaur type Jurassic Park noise.
It's like the opposite of an eagle where you think an eagle makes a really cool noise
and it's dumb and you'd think a koala
would make a really cutesy little noise and it makes like a nasty and it's like a
like a komodo dragon noise it's insane yeah you're ready shout out to koalas are you pulling up a
video of a koala you call a sound yeah yeah that just sounds like a pig. But the whole time they're looking into the sky.
This is a very territorial thing.
Okay, I might be...
How big is a koala?
A koala is...
French bulldog.
That's a great representation.
Yeah, that's bigger than I thought.
Yeah.
Because that's a deep great representation that's bigger than i thought yeah because because that's
a deep that's a deep tone it sounds bigger that was david yeah yeah um we saw dingoes we saw
crocodiles we saw what's that like a dog thing it's like a wild dog it looks just like a regular
dog actually to be honest i feel like that's not much different is that just
what Australians called dogs no they had it's uh they were in a part of this like fenced off area
hey look at that dango over there wild dogs yeah that's a dang cockatoos uh wallabies platypus
oh really yeah all kinds of weird animals over there no bummer it was behind a glass so anyway yeah
australia was a good time it's there it's a very different time zone so i sorry if i just like fall
asleep mid-podcast it might happen i can already see your eyes are like a little glazed over so
we just had like a nice little red eye flight i slept like an hour it was awesome
anyway this week we had a bunch of stuff a bunch bunch of tech stuff. We had a Monday Apple event. It was a September event, which means
we got the iPhone. We also got the AirPods and the Apple Watch updates for this year.
And that kind of overshadowed some other tech stuff we also got, which was a Huawei Tri-Fold
smartphone and the PS5 Pro announcement. So we got a lot to talk about. Yeah. And the PS5 Pro announcement.
So there's, we got a lot to talk about.
Yeah, it's a big week.
It's a whole, it's a whole episode.
It's a whole episode.
Should we start with the, we should start with the Apple event.
Yeah, let's start with the Apple event.
Let's do it.
Cool.
Okay.
Well, in order of what they talked about in the event, it was kind of Apple intelligence
and then right into Apple Watch and then airpods yeah
and there were some rumors about apple watch being a whole big refresh this whole dramatic redesign
and then they do play this really dramatic video you know how apple does they'll have this like
super boomy crazy reveal and then it looked just like the old Apple Watch, just a little thinner.
All new design, baby.
All new redesign.
They did call it a redesign,
but if we're being honest,
it's just a thinner,
it's a little bit flatter.
It's a little more square, right?
Barely.
Barely, okay.
Not that much.
Yeah, barely.
If you put them side by side,
you can notice.
There's somewhere it's like the, you know,
two photos with a split down the middle
and that-
That's how you notice.
That you can tell,
but still even that is so minimal. Because it's thinner, it makes it look more squared off but it's not really it's notice
a bowl but also who cares it was really funny because they were like it's 10 10 percent lighter
so that you know your wrist won't have all this like where and it's like who is at the end of the
day like my watch has really been killing my arm.
Like, nobody.
Nobody is like that.
10% lighter.
Also, Apple Watch Ultra next.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So the main changes we got are it's 10% thinner and 10% lighter.
The aluminum has, is there a new color even?
I don't remember.
There's the, yeah, the black.
The jet black.
Jet black.
Yeah.
Which is a callback to the iPhone 7 days. I remember thing that thing scratched a lot yes it did we'll see if
this one does too and then they replace stainless steel with titanium so instead of stainless steel
models there's titanium Apple watch for a lot of money which are still quite expensive but you can
get natural you can get uh like dark or light so titanium that's also lighter than stainless steel
great uh they charge faster
they'll go 80 in 30 minutes which is nice and there's some some minor new features like a
couple new watch faces i think the always on display showing the second hand is is neat i
think that that's really cool to be honest it's funny that we went from like we were doing that
from the beginning and then they're like wait that takes all the battery so then they made it so that it doesn't update and it only updates every minute and then now
they're like okay we're finally efficient enough that we can actually be like a normal watch but
i think is a is nice it just kind of adds to the skeuomorphism nice touch i have a stupid watch
person question yeah yeah does that second hand tick or does it sweep it takes it ticks sweeping would be way more it's a one hertz
refresh it depends on the the watch face you're using i don't know i think they all do one per
second one yeah one per second so which would be like a constant so it's like a quartz watch
not a manual watch yeah but i think david's right in in when the screen is actually on like you're
looking at the watch some some of them sweet.
When it's on.
When it's on, sure.
But when it's off, it ticks.
Yeah.
I think my most interesting update with it is these are called, they're calling it, I don't know what this means, but a wide angle OLED display.
Yes.
I looked at it side by side with the Apple Watch Series 9, and it is a slightly brighter off-axis viewing angle, which is nice, because a watch,
you're not always looking at it exactly
face-on. You might check it with
it sort of off to the side, so it's nice
that it's brighter off-axis.
There's some new apps. There's a new updated depth app.
There's a Tides app now. There's a water
temperature sensor in the Series 10. For some reason.
And there is a
update coming that will enable
sleep apnea detection once it gets FDA approval and a bunch of other regulatory bodies approve it.
It will use just the gyroscope to assess if you have potential high levels of sleep apnea, in which case you can take a PDF to your doctor and go from there.
So, yeah.
Just the gyroscope?
Just the gyroscope.
I think it's the accelerometer.
That's interesting.
It's just the gyroscope. Or acceler's the accelerometer that's interesting it's just the
gyroscope isn't the accelerometer sorry yeah yeah just the accelerometer so just movement it's
because massimo uh is suing them still so i was well i was wondering about the the microphone
because like if you stop breathing during your sleep you assume that noise would be helpful to
detection but they don't use anything from the microphone yeah i wonder if some
microphone could pick up someone next to you or like not all sleep apnea is straight snoring or
like gasping it's like can be pretty quiet yeah breathing yeah i mean i have a i used to use a
sleep tracking app that you just put your phone on your uh bed on your bedside or on your bed and
it would use the microphones and accelerometer to determine when you're asleep and when you're awake so the fact that the watch doesn't have to record anything is
it's nice yeah it's very interesting how deep into the medical space they're getting a lot of
health features that'll be a theme for air for sure i mean if amazon can buy one medical and
make a medicine thing i'm sure apple will eventually do that too yeah they're always careful to say that it's not actually a medical grade device this year they later this is the most that they've got into
like medical grade stuff and later even more so exactly yeah but that's apple watch series 10
that's that's kind of it same price is not a ton whoa whoa tell me you don't care about audio
without telling me you don't care about it. Oh, my bad.
Okay.
I want to go into the one thing with audio.
In order to make it thinner, they did re-engineer the speakers to be 30% less volume, but just as loud, so they're more efficient speakers.
Oh, okay, got it.
Yeah, not audible.
Spatial volume.
Spatial volume inside the watch. So they're more efficient, and they've also
allowed you to play
sound out of the watch speakers
by themselves.
So if you have local music
or anything you want to play out of your watch
speaker, you can do it.
You can be the guy on the hike who's just
walking with music on their window. The people on the subway
are going to go wild with this, man.
You could do it if you want to now.
Yeah. You can leave your friends
behind.
You know what would be really cool, though?
If it was, like, really loud.
Like, deafening.
I mean, it's going to be, like, tinny for sure.
When we get one, we'll
test it out, but it'd be really funny to, like, be on
the subway and just go...
Yeah, you know what's funny?
The watch Ultra has that crazy loud siren.
They don't usually use the speakers in the watches very much,
but it does have a siren in it.
Also, I can't imagine...
I feel like the obvious use of this is running,
but can you imagine hearing your music go like...
What's the Doppler effect?
It's just a straight Doppler effect.
That's a good
point can you gotta run like this might be a dumb question can you take phone calls on it
yeah that's true that's the other use of this is that just for this new one or could you do that
before like can you take phone calls with it coming out of your watch yes you could have done
that before so that's maybe one of the only uses where you could use the speaker of the watch
before well it was also so i used the nike run club app and they have like marathon training
programs and i was using that and annoyingly it's like the
connection between your air pods and your watch is not very solid so it
disconnects a lot or just doesn't connect a lot so a lot of the time I
would be running and the coach just out of my watch while I was in the gym would
be like all right now we're gonna stop talking but yeah just was gosh stop talking but yeah it just was coming out of
my watch and it was very frustrating so now you can just like play spotify out of it too
if you're into that disable this feature apple immediately there's another uh there's another
watch update i gotta talk to you guys about real quick oh gosh i wonder what that could be yeah uh the apple watch ultra 2 is the same but now has a satin black version
this was the rumor a year ago or not a year ago at wwc what was it i definitely remember
talking about this was a rumor a while ago and it didn't ago at wwc what was it i definitely remember talking about this was a
rumor a while ago and it didn't come oh no when the watch yeah when the ultra 2 came out a year
ago we thought it was gonna come out in black so maybe they held it until it did it looks so good
it it does look good so i i had so many people message me just be like how amped is marquez
right now i'm like i'm not, but I know he's like sweating.
Yeah, when they announced it,
it was one of those things.
Remember last time when they like quoted me on stage
and like everyone like looked at me?
I feel like the same thing happened
when they announced the black watch too.
Everyone just went.
The spotlight just hits you in the crowd
and everybody turns around.
Don't you, Spidward.
Yeah. So it is a coating
it's a coating over the top
of the titanium they say
that it is very scratch resistant is what they said
in the keynote
it's a watch like it's gonna get nicked
I don't know how deep you have to
nick to get to the light color
underneath mine has
gotten nicked quite a bit and it's you know
it's raw titanium colored so it doesn't look crazy but i wonder when i get this black watch
because i'm going to uh how long it'll take to nick it and see the the light color underneath
we'll see yeah but it's otherwise literally the same watch so yeah but some new bands also that
matched with it that oh true really i don't like the titanium
one or whatever it is the like steel linked one but that new trail loop looks so good
the green alpine like a milanese loop i don't know if really yeah i might try to be a milanese
loop guy the wait was it a million i thought it wasn't a loop because it has that huge buckle on
the bottom there's that new one too yeah okay but i've been thinking about a milanese loop is the new one yeah i'm curious about trying that
i don't know it does look weird the new trail band the like black trail band looks so good
yes i obviously like trail bands i have a knockoff one on my garment yeah which one do i have that's
a trail band as well but like a slightly oh that's apple's trail band yeah that's actually
yeah the real trail band it's dirty the green a slightly, oh, that's Apple's trail band. Yeah, that's actually Apple's trail band. The real trail band.
It's dirty.
The green Alpine band looks awesome.
I just don't think it looks awesome on the black watch.
I think that'll look nicer on the regular watch.
The light watch.
Yeah.
Well, that's the most exciting thing
we've talked about so far by a lot.
But then there's new AirPods as well.
Yeah.
So, okay, AirPods have a couple different versions, actually.
Yeah.
AirPods baseline, AirPods 4, AirPods Pro, and then AirPods Max. as well yeah so okay airpods have a couple different versions actually yeah airpods baseline
airpods 4 airpods pro and then airpods max some of these are real upgrades some of these are fake
upgrades yeah airpods 4 real upgrade the the base like uh hard tip airpods there's actually two
versions now yeah and this was kind of confusing in the moment with the keynote but i think i've
figured it all out which is basically there's a 129 version and a 179 version.
For 129, you get the new AirPods 4.
It's a new shape, new driver, new AirPods, regular case, USB-C.
Great.
They said this case is actually slightly smaller.
Oh, great.
Yeah.
So that's 129.
Yeah.
But for 179, you can get AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation.
And I got to try these.
They do have ANC and transparency mode and adaptive whatever they're calling that.
Audio.
Adaptive audio.
Yeah.
And that will also be a wireless charging case with USB-C and a speaker in the case.
Yeah.
So if you want to find it with Find My, it can make noises.
It's funny because it's just called AirPods 4 with AN with anc but they also have wireless charging and a speaker and it's like that's a
lot more than just anc so it's kind of like weird marketing apple pencil naming all over again do
you do you think they just took an airpod pro and to put the internals in the AirPods. I was told that the ANC is about the quality
of the AirPods Pro first generation.
That's what Apple told me.
For realsies?
I would kind of disagree.
And this is only from my very limited couple of masks.
I mean, they're different designs,
so they're going to have different quality.
That's really where the difference comes from for me
is the hard tip has never fit in my ear very well and the soft tip with the seal has always done
way better so i tried anc with the new airpods 4 with for like two minutes and i could immediately
tell like some sound was still leaking in so it is doing a job of canceling some of the outside
sound but it is still like leaking some sound in versus the soft tip for me i'll be interested to hear because i agree like those the hard don't
fit in my ear at all yeah but every time we mention that we get a lot of comments of like i hate the
silicon tips i only like the regular airpods so maybe that just fits better in their ears and if
yeah they have a good seal maybe i'll do really well if for sure you're one of those people in
the next month or two let us know if you think that's better yeah i'm just really curious if the extra
50 is worth it for the anc because like you said there's no proper c but it's not just anc you're
getting transparency mode you're getting a wireless charging case which in my opinion is worth the 50
dollars on its own i think transparency mode is worth it and the speaker i think i honestly think
the speaker is one of the best speakers makes it way easier to find your in the case yeah just the thing that lets you
find my if you ever miss it do you ever if you lose that stuff then i feel like that's not
i just think it's nice to have if my speaker didn't make no if my airpods didn't make noise
i don't think i would even notice 50 bucks is cheaper than having to rebuy it yeah just don't lose them with the with the yeah with the hot and
cold with precision the precision finding yeah that one yeah but you have to be like close enough
for that to work i agree but to me that's just like room sprinkles on top of the main thing that
is the differentiator which is the active noise canceling and if that's not that much of a difference i honestly think wireless charging is the best part
of i think wireless charging for us it is wireless charging is the most overrated feature in
technology completely disagree everyone couldn't disagree for no reason these are all two types of
there's you either love wireless charging or couldn't care less about wireless charging
love anc or couldn't care less about anc and you either fit hard tips in your ears
there are people right now simultaneously listening to this podcast that are like
david is a freaking idiot and the other people are like adam is a freaking literally
i've moved phones that have wireless charging and don't have wireless charging and it doesn't matter
it matters it doesn't we're It matters. It doesn't matter.
We're going to get to the 60 hertz iPhone later on the same note.
So just sit on that for a little longer.
Before we move on, I just want to say, why is there an H2 chip in the lower ones if there's no ANC?
I believe that is just for the way it represents sound and uses the new drivers and connects.
The connection is
stable connection things like that well and then my follow-up question that i know none of us can
answer is is the mic array for anc present in the lower tier ones too like have they like i guess
i'm curious i think so not to be a little little nudnik i think so i think they're the same but
that means it's a software feature they kind of just turned it off yeah yep yeah they're the same bud with better software and a better case
lame that's fair i mean previously they sold the wireless charging case for i think 20 more
because they had the airpods 3 without wireless charging and then with wireless charging and it
was 20 bucks more
for the case so they're basically charging 20 for the case 30 for wireless charging the graphic on
apple.com shows the h2 chip and says clearer calls with voice isolation and a new hands-free
that's a good point of background as an accelerometer to be able to oh yeah when we
get these we got to test the new the nodding and the i know i was
gonna say the new like phone call noise oh yeah yeah let's make a ton of noise and hop on the
phone although i do think every single phone event and headphone event they always say that
they like made that clear absolutely for sure that is true this is true so we'll see we'll
find out and i thought it was funny too because they were like we tested a bazillion different head and ear shapes to make sure that it was even but they
say that every year i'm like if you if you took like 50 000 samples of ear shapes why are you
changing it constantly i have a perfect example of why that doesn't matter at all and is all
marketing bullshit do you remember when we went to the Microsoft?
We just went for a couple different things.
It was when they first showed us the folding surface and there was supposed to be a tablet.
Do you remember the Surface Buds?
Yeah, the terrible, terrible, terrible headphones.
They brought us into this room
with this huge table of different shapes and sizes of ears
and how they tested it on all these different shapes and sizes
so it fits perfectly.
And it was the dumbest pair of headphones I've ever headphones yeah for those of you who don't remember it was like
a satellite dish truly wireless earbuds with this huge circle on the outside so you could like
swipe your powerpoint presentation and they just like fell out of your ears and they were awful
i i wish i was joking so yeah that was like one of the first things i told us is we made these
fit perfect for everyone.
Also, those are the most uncomfortable headphones because the plastic parts that go in your ear were like really stiff and it like pressed it like cut into your ear.
Those are awful.
There's something so funny about like Apple, you know, puts out their headphones.
They're like, oh, we can integrate with this with the ecosystem.
Like we'll plug it into find my we'll plug it into this.
Microsoft's like, what? What do we have in our ecosystem we can come up teams teams teams it's like when penos finet was like now that the surface pen works on the surface
pro i can hike up a mountain and add in in the Excel spreadsheet my altitude by drawing it in
Excel cells.
That was a real thing that
happened. To bring us
back on topic, you want to know another crazy
ecosystem feature?
You're back here for one week and you're already bringing us back.
Mark, as I know what you're about to say, I'm so
into it.
You can charge the new AirPods
with wireless charging with an Apple Watch charger. You can charge all the AirPods with wireless charging with an Apple Watch charger.
You can charge all the AirPods with wireless charging
with an Apple Watch charger. What?
It's just ecosystem stuff. Wait, really?
Yes, we've had this conversation like five times.
I put my AirPods on my Apple Watch charger regularly.
Marques was surprised at
this when I told him last time.
My AirPods are currently charging on my Apple Watch charger.
Can I charge my phone on my Apple Watch charger?
No. Just AirPods.
Just AirPods.
Specifically.
What?
Yeah.
Yeah.
It is handy.
Fun fact.
So yeah, AirPods 4.
They're coming out.
They're also the same price.
It's $129, $179.
And then AirPods Pro more or less got a software update.
Like physically, they're basically the same.
They have H2.
But the thing is, they have many more health features now.
So it's now a clinical grade hearing aid, which is actually, I think, pretty sick.
I think it's a big deal.
I think it's pretty awesome.
Yeah.
And it has a whole bunch of hearing protection features and hearing health features to help you monitor and reduce loud noise exposure.
And you can wear them during concerts like we were talking about before, and it'll reduce the sounds but still have the clarity.
Higher sample rates, all that.
Sounds great.
But yeah, essentially a software update for airpods too so or airpods pro too the hearing test in it also so
like maybe you get them and you're not even thinking about using them for hearing protection
and then you take the test and you're like oh boy and then maybe you will start using them yeah
it's a like a great hearing test that's the kind of stuff where not a lot of people will go out and
take that test but if it's just part of something you own already it's there how many people are bored on an
airplane or uh like bus or something they're like oh i have this on my phone from what i understand
too that's how you enable the hearing aid mode is that you have to take the hearing test and then
it specifically knows what frequencies you're not able to hear and then it amplifies those frequencies
i can't wait till it gives me as a
non-audio person i'm looking at ls to make sure that that's yeah yeah i think it's also i think
it's a really cool feature because uh over the years like proper medical hearing aids have
actually been sort of getting closer and closer and closer to airpods like already modern hearing
aids you can like bluetooth to and send your devices
to them. And like, I think some of them, a lot of them have like, different modes of noise
canceling depending on your environment. So it seemed like only a matter of time. Can I tell
a funny story about air pods and hearing loss? I'll keep it really quick. I promise. Yeah. Before
I worked here, one of my many, my many jobs was I did lights at nightclubs.
So I was in nightclubs for hours and hours and hours.
And it's deafening.
And when you're doing lights, anyone who's ever worked with earplugs knows that a lot of earplugs, until you get really expensive ones, really make music not fun to listen to.
Even though it won't hurt your ears.
listen to like even though it's like it won't hurt your ears um and i discovered pretty early on like airpods pro excellent excellent excellent excellent earplugs like lowers the volume and keeps it nice
and even super awesome except any dj you work with when he looks over and sees you at the lighting
desk with airpods in he's like are you listening to a podcast right now like are you not like
what are you listening like dude can you do your job please and you have to be like no no no no no
let's pull out your phone be like nothing's playing like yeah yeah yeah okay this is a this
is very good for a lot of people obviously because hearing aids are super expensive and it's like
really nice that people are going to be able to start using these uh it's also very good marketing
for apple because now people are
going to just be walking around with airpods in their ears all the time right which they already
kind of were doing but now they're going to be doing it constantly especially if they have hearing
loss so they're like do you have hearing loss and didn't know it wear these all the time and you're
going to be able to hear better and then it locks you into the ecosystem i know if you switch to
android for real you can't hear no for real this is an ecosystem wait can you not use
them as oh if you never pay you can't change i don't think you can change modes if you're using
them with an android device not even like with the stem though i think with the stem you can
you might i could change them now but i'm not sure about the hearing aid you can't do the hearing
part yes it's an eco it's an ecosystem lock-in thing.
Apple is the best at this.
They're so good at like,
this is really, really, really good.
But also now you can't leave our ecosystem.
You're stuck.
Part of me is like,
this is a good feature,
well-played Apple, you deserve this one.
But also, wow.
I know.
It's a bad look if you don't offer it.
Even if they just
made like an android app to just do the hearing test and control the hearing aid like they're not
gonna medical things which i don't think they'll do it's a good and a bad look i think if you ask
apple there's a total guess but i bet they would say it has something to do with the h2 chip
probably probably here's the benefit of all that though and i i saw a couple people on twitter tweeting about this just like people follow what apple does this will probably be in samsung buds and
pixel buds and even just other yeah earbuds i would guess within the next two years yeah
that's a good point the samsung and google buds will ai generate sounds that aren't actually
there for you i got them so yeah very good marketing on Apple's part.
Just going to say, I feel like the reason it also might not come to Android phones is
because I believe they mentioned that all of the data is stored to the health app.
Yes, they did.
And it's probably some data privacy thing.
Which is in their secure enclave or whatever.
I think the other reason is Apple wants to make a ton of money.
Next.
AirPods Max.
AirPods Max.
Biggest update of the year.
Let's talk about AirPods Max for a second and zoom in on my face for this.
Apple, AirPods Max team specifically, what have you been doing for the past four years?
I just wanted, I'm curious, if you have an account,
maybe leave a comment below and let me know.
Were you in a coma?
Were you really tired?
Just because I just looked at your website
and I saw the keynote
and I just want to double check
and make sure this is true.
The only thing that you changed
from all the feedback that you heard
for the past four years
from when AirPods Max came out,
because you saw the reviews
right you saw how much we like the sound but you saw how much we hated the purse case you saw how
much we hated how heavy they are you saw how much we wanted it to have an on off button right and i
like that you can like take the ear cups off with a magnet and the design is pretty cool but that
mesh was not great right so that you know we know there are things that are bad about airpods max
so i'm
curious in the last four years i have it written down here all you did all you did was uh add usb
type c and colors now look i appreciate usb type c as much as anyone that's actually my number one
feature i wanted on the airpods max so this is the airpods max refresh usb type c but then
you didn't do i'm just checking my notes here anything else
anything else there is an h2 chip in the 129 dollar
and there is an h1 chip in the 400 and 4? $550. $549 AirPods Max.
So 2024 refresh,
same price,
same H1 chip,
same drivers,
same sound,
same lack of a power button,
same mesh,
same stupid purse case.
What have you been doing
this whole time?
I'm just curious.
If you could leave a comment below,
that would be amazing.
Orange is hard.
It takes a long time. Nothing even rhymes with it orange of course i'm glad we don't do performance
reviews here because like i felt like i was getting in trouble there i'm just like what
is it hey andrew what the hell have you been doing max team right like it's apple they have
they have people whose job it is to work on airpods max
right honestly that's not crazy kudos those people are getting paid how and they made orange i will
say their target demographic for these generally is just people who just want to look cool oh look
i fully think that you're right the target demographic doesn't care and this is true about
a lot of things that we talk about on this show and complain about in general.
It's like, actually, most people probably won't care.
Why do you even need an H2 chip?
Whatever, it's fine.
The headphones are fine.
But like-
It's the principle.
Yeah, it's the principle.
And in the world of other products exist,
like if you really check,
like Google noise canceling headphones
and just look at what's available to you for hundreds of dollars less.
And then tell me this is a good idea to buy this product.
I do.
It just doesn't fit.
I see so many people in Brooklyn running with AirPods Max and they're the heaviest.
Weight training.
They're so heavy.
That's insane.
They're so heavy and they're so expensive and you're going to like get the mesh all sweaty and gross and it's crazy.
Like Sony's Mark 3s mark 4s
or mark 5s would be better they'd be lighter they'd connect to your iphone so the reason that
i said in the video i probably i'm gonna end up getting the airpods max is because i specifically
fly with these headphones yeah and when i fly with these headphones i start off on walking onto the
plane with it connected to my phone either listening to music or a podcast or whatever i'm doing and then when i'm on the plane i switch them back and forth between my
laptop and my phone because i'm doing things on my laptop and back to my phone and they each
teach they each whatever chip like the airpods switch easily and it's great and that's awesome
about them and they have great noise cancellation but i just hate that they're lightning so i
probably am still going to fly with them,
but like I said,
I'm going to try to become an AirPods Pro person
because earbuds with the silicon tips,
they work for me.
I think the noise cancellation is pretty good.
I think the sound quality is pretty good,
and I think they will still deter people
from trying to talk to me.
So I'm going to try.
I'm going to try.
Do you think we're getting a new pair of AirPods Max
at all this year?
No. Wait, this year? No.
Wait, this year?
This year.
Wait, you mean after this?
Do you think there's another event somewhere for iPads or anything?
No, no, no, no, no.
No, I think for the next four years, they're going to sell this.
No way.
I don't know about four.
Maybe two.
Look, if you asked me before last event if all they would change is USB-C and nothing else,
that's exactly what I would have said.
No way they don't adjust anything.
My bet is in two years, because of all the negative feedback they're getting, they will change it.
Two years.
I think I agree with David.
Sooner than four years, we'll see something.
Whether that's a good update or not is to be.
They can't do it too soon because they just released these, but they can't wait another four years.
Otherwise, there'll be eight-year-old headphones,
which is insane.
We'll be on Dyson 4s by then.
For real.
Yeah.
Would you rather have these or the Dyson headphones?
Dyson.
Really?
Yeah, a thousand percent.
The Dyson's cool.
Well, as a non-iPhone user, yeah.
The Dyson's are even heavier than AirPods Max.
Yeah, but they look sick.
The padding is so much better.
The padding's pretty good.
I don't know.
The battery life is double. I like the Son like the sonos yeah the battery life's crazy yeah
they're expensive and they're still a hundred dollars less than the airpods yeah and the app
is so good see they all have one critical flaw and the sonos is the app and also like the cups
are a little shallow i like how they fit yeah the app is the least of my worries once it's connected
and going i'm
pretty happy totally yeah well we got a lot more to talk about we gotta get to the phones of course
so we should take a quick break and get to those but before we do it's been a minute since i've
done this uh let's do trivia two weeks go by and my guess is like it's been 5,000 years. When you were gone, David and I just did not know how to
end segments or episodes
or like...
That's it. So I guess if you want
to like and subscribe, I guess. I think at one point
we just committed to we probably will be stuck
in the studio. So you come back and end it
for us. It's muscle memory. You guys got to develop
this like and subscribe thing. Yeah.
Guys, yesterday
there was an Apple event.
No way.
And you know what that means?
It means today.
It was two days ago.
What?
Bro, you've been here the whole time.
Oh my God.
It was two days ago.
Holy crap.
All right.
Well, on that note, were you paying attention?
We're back.
Ellis wasn't.
He doesn't even know what day it was.
I remember.
Yeah.
First question.
What day was it? First question. Where am I? Who are I? Cool. back ellis wasn't he doesn't even know what day it was i remember yeah first question what day first question where am i who are i cool apple does not now and has never made a single device
with a 3d display and no vision pro doesn't count with a 3d display however However, during... In my question, I wrote yesterday's event, too.
I totally am like...
During Monday's event...
Montag.
Apple used the term 3D twice in their presentation.
What two products they used the term 3D while presenting?
And I don't need how they used it.
I don't need the set i just
needed they just had to say 3d i feel like i'm just doing what product they did not they did
not say 3d i know but i feel like that should be considered a 3d display what because it was
the display that you pressed into i think he meant like 3d i fish i know but it was called
david you're now two points behind behind dang well there was only so many products
I talked about so I feel like we can really think
this one through
point for each product
two points trying to even
two points total
one per product
well we'll think about that
as will everyone else listening
and the answers will be at the end like usual
we'll be right back 70 000 people are here and bob dylan is the reason for it inspired by the true story if anyone is
gonna hold your attention on stage it's gonna be a freak are you a freak hope so and storm All right, welcome back. Norton, El Fede, Monica Barbaro, a complete unknown, only in theaters Christmas Day.
All right, welcome back. Let's talk the new iPhones that were announced at this September event. iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max. If you haven't already seen the first impressions
video, it is up on the main channel, so you can get a good look at the phones, you can get a good
look at the specs, hear my first actual thoughts about what's happening with the state of the iphone that's
your short version but there's a whole lot to dig into just because there's a lot happening that we
didn't get to with that video um but i'll just lay out the basic specs first and then we can
just sort of jump into each phone wait before you get into that, just the regular iPhone 16 looks different,
and I think it looks great with the new camera bump.
Deal.
Yeah, aesthetics.
Aesthetically, before we dive into the nitty gritty,
bringing it back to that stacked small camera bump
like the iPhone X, I think looks so much better
than when it was the stacked camera bump at a big square
and then turned into diagonal.
It's just wasted space, I think.
Yeah, I don't think you're alone. I think a lot of people like the new colors and the new looks of
the baseline iphones yeah and then the pro phones are like faded like desert and titanium colors
again which is not new but that's that's the color so right off the bat bright vibrant colors with
the 16 the 16 and 16 plus are the same price and the same sizes last year, but the main differences now are slightly better cameras,
slightly better chip.
It's the A18.
It should be faster, better in real engine.
And it has an action button now and a camera control button.
We got two new buttons this year in the baseline iPhone.
That's crazy.
Which is fascinating because not that long ago,
we were wondering if they were going to get rid
of everything on the outside.
Remember they got rid
of the headphone jack
and everyone went,
what about the other buttons?
All the buttons.
The speakers and everything.
And now we have more buttons.
Yeah.
The Pros,
16 Pro and Pro Max,
also get the camera control button.
Yeah.
But they also get larger displays
with thinner bezels,
so 6.3 and 6.9 inch screens
nice um that is a huge phone and uh they also get even more camera updates uh new ultra wide
mostly a 48 megapixel ultra wide and both sizes now have the 5x telephoto instead of just the
big phone having a 5x telephoto and the fusion camera yeah they're
calling it a fusion camera yeah which okay not sure exactly what that means but we'll get there
yeah okay and that's kind of it with the pros eh yeah oh a18 pro is the chip which by the way
i looked into it and it looks like it has one more gpu core now it's pro ta-da we trace rays
baby trace those rays yeah so that's that's basically what's happening uh i think easily
the most fascinating part is the camera control button on all these phones there are so many
interesting things about this button so i guess let's just explain yeah what it is and then we
can give our thoughts on right okay so yeah on the bottom right hand corner of the phone underneath the power button
there's a new button on the phones it is a button yeah and it is flush with the side of the phone
and when you press it it opens the camera and then from there it is a touch-sensitive, pressure-sensitive, capacitive surface that can scroll and half-press to continue doing things with the camera.
It can dive into the camera app settings.
It can change camera settings.
It can take photos.
And it's supposed to get an update at some point to give it a two-stage, like, half-press to focus and then full-press to take the photo.
So it's just for camera stuff.
Which, by the way, is coming soon. What is that is that what why is that coming soon i don't know it seems like
apple has a rule where they're like guys every time we release an iphone we have to have one
camera feature that doesn't launch right half press to focus so that's the thing that's taking
longer to program that doesn't go in but still the like scrolling and stuff yeah the scrolling's
already there works and from the phone from the start.
Yeah.
Okay, sweet.
Yeah, so just your half press to focus
is not coming until later.
Okay, cool.
Interesting.
But that will also be able to be plugged into
or tapped into by third-party app developers
who also make apps that use the camera.
Yeah.
So this is, again, just camera control.
But if you make Snapchat, if you make Halide,
if you make, is it Halide? Halide. Hal Snapchat, if you make Halide, if you make, is it Halide?
Halide.
Halide.
If you make Halide, if you make Instagram, if you make Final Cut Camera, if you're Apple,
any of these apps that use the camera, they can also take advantage of that scrolling
surface to do camera stuff, which is cool.
It's cool.
Yeah.
Wait, did you get to try it?
I got to try it.
Is there feedback, haptic feedback?
Yeah.
Yeah.
First is full click.
Does that feel good?
Yes.
It's a very nice click.
In the half click, you can definitely tell it's a half as well.
And when you scroll, it's like...
You can feel the scrolling.
The problem that I felt was that just like the Rabbit R1 when it launched,
when the acceleration of the volume knob was not high enough
and you had to really move it, it felt the same way for me.
The acceleration wasn't quite high enough because you had to like really move it uh it felt the same way for me where like the
acceleration wasn't quite high enough because really you kind of had to well at least when i
was using it maybe my maybe i don't have good enough fingerprints or something but when i was
swiping my finger it kind of felt like i had to do like two full swipes in order to like do a full
zoom okay yeah it didn't move quite as much as i wanted it to i wanted it to be slightly more sensitive
i found actually the opposite interestingly i found that because it has this like physics
scrolling and you can swipe and it keeps going after you let go which the rabbit didn't do
yeah i would scroll too far accidentally sometimes i feel like it shouldn't have that
i feel like it should be like you have to get used to it you definitely have to get used to
i was gonna say i would rather be ratcheted low sense like like what you're saying because like it's so much more annoying
if you're trying to like zoom in or something you go too far then you try and come back yeah
i don't think that i'd rather do a couple i don't think it should like fly i think it should like
be ratcheted but just like be more sensitive to my micro swipes yeah interesting i wonder if it'll
be adjustable eventually that
obviously is the best thing they could do for it yeah yeah but as of right now it's like you can
double tap in and it'll let you change the f-stop in portrait mode or let you change the tone or the
zoom amount or which lens you're shooting with or whatever just by scrolling around in the camera
there was a lot of misinformation about the button a lot of people were saying
this is a just a solid state button just like the macbook pro trackpad and it doesn't actually
click in and you just feel like it's clicking in it is a real button but it also has the taptic
engine in it to help it feel like that click is more than it is and also to allow for the
ratcheting like swiping gesture like enhances the click it enhances the ratcheting, like swiping gesture.
Like enhances the click.
It enhances the click.
It allows for like the two-stage click
to feel more like solid.
Yeah, so it has both,
but it is a physical one,
which is actually quite surprising
because again, like you were saying
about getting rid of all the buttons eventually,
we also expected Apple to eventually have buttons,
but just have them be solid state.
So yeah, it's interesting them be solid state. Yeah.
So yeah, it's interesting that they're keeping physical buttons.
So I have a lot of interesting thoughts about this thing in particular.
Thought number one, I would have not been shocked at all if this was only on the pro phones.
Yeah.
This feels like a thing that they would go, this is really complicated.
This is just a camera feature. This is like allowing you to mess with the settings in the camera and dial
things in this so feels like a pro only phone feature it would be a reason to buy the pros
exactly a reason to separate them and when they're on all the phones i was happy but i was very
surprised by that that's number one yeah thought number two is Apple also introduced cases that they talked about,
and they had a moment where they had to explain that there's actually a piece of glass
or ceramic in the case that extends the sapphire,
that extends that out so that it's still flush,
but you can still feel the swiping and the haptics.
It transfers the capacitance as well through the glass.
I thought that was fascinating.
They do that with their own first-party cases.
It will be up to other third-party case manufacturers
of how they want to handle this button.
Will they try that too?
Or will they just do a deep cutout?
Like I'm going to ask dbrand for sure.
I want to talk to case manufacturers.
I was talking to Michael Fisher at the event.
He was like, yeah, we're just going to do a cutout
on the Clix case and maybe like a swoop down and a swoop up for it so you can like you can still touch the actual
sapphire of the phone but it's not like it seems like that's what most case manufacturers are doing
because a lot of them have already showed off their cases and they just have a huge divot in
the side of the phone yeah but like an otter box case is going to have to have a huge cutout. Yeah. I thought that was another really interesting thing to pay attention to with this.
And then third is just what else will it do?
Like what will third-party manufacturers or third-party app makers do with this camera button?
Because if you don't make an app with a camera, there's nothing you can do with it.
Yeah.
The Halide app examples were really cool because there was a bunch of different modes that you could put on it.
There was one where you would swipe and it would like show different grid lines.
So you could have like, you could change the amount of grid lines that you'd had.
There was another one that showed basically, uh, I don't remember what
the technical term for this is, but when you, it shows all of the different lens.
Um, like it shows the wide angle, but then it will show boxes inside of that to show it was it would
be if you switch to that lens there's a name for that and i cannot there's another thing they did
and i think it was just in the regular one but couldn't you swipe grid lines that would show
how it would show on different like social media sites oh yeah it'd be cropped in like one by one
right i think how i'd had that okay yeah maybe that was it yeah so you could do like one by one
or 16 by nine and it would show all these different formats
so that you could, when you're filming,
you know, okay, I can film in horizontal mode,
and then I can just crop later,
and it will still fit in the 1x1.
That's cool.
Or the 9x16 aspect ratio.
Yeah.
My last thought is that Apple at no point
ever called this a button.
They always called it camera control.
They never called it a button.
And it's just been sitting in the back of my head. Like, why do they refuse to call it a button they always called it camera control they never called it a button and it's just it's just been sitting in the back of my head like why do they refuse to call it a button do they really not want it to be a button do they want it to someday just be like a solid
state thing and not be a button airpods pro i think it's the same thing yeah i think they're
just trying to brand things and just make them definitively apple. But they could call it a camera button. Yeah, but they call it AirPods Pro.
As opposed to what?
AirPods Pros.
Well, I just mean they're refusing to use the word button here.
That's why I'm like, okay, you could call it the camera control button.
You could call it the camera button.
They're calling it camera control.
Camera control button.
No does feel more like a software feature than it does a hardware.
Yeah, that's how I agree.
It felt like they were talking about the software and it happened to have a hardware piece controlling
yeah and i can imagine someday in the future they get rid of the physical click and it's just a
trackpad cameras control bro bro but go ahead andrew well actually now that i think about it
so my one thought was it stinks that this is only available for camera things because that could be an awesome button to map different apps things too like maybe
scrolling on a page without having to put your hand on it now you have it vertical right where
your thumb is the pixel i think it was the pixel that had the back mounted fingerprint reader and
you could swipe down on the fingerprint reader to move down the page that was awesome maybe they're
not calling it a button because they're then you're expecting to be able to do things outside of the camera with it maybe yeah
to be fair reachability wise it is kind of a little out of the way yeah like you have to
it's kind of splitting the difference between like where it would normally be on a horizontal phone
and also being able to get true i think it's a good place they specifically said that they put
it there because they wanted it to be in a good place for horizontal shots and horizontal shots and vertical shots.
Yeah, that was my second point.
The first time they showed it off, they were like, don't move your hand out of the way
to take this photo.
And it was a portrait photo like standing up.
And I was like, that feels like everyone is expecting that to be landscape and to be like
a normal camera.
And the first one they showed was just kind of like awkwardly holding it where your thumb would just be like one inch to the left on the software one
yeah but it is cool that when you use that it kind of wipes away the ui of the camera in general so
you can see more and all you have to do is use that really cool swipe down like a little notch
now we have another notch in iphones also which is kind of awesome yeah you know what i like that
apple has been doing with the the camera stuff every year is like yes they're doing the like oh
yeah our lenses are better like everything is better but they've been modifying the software
over and over again to try to make it a better experience as a replacement or a secondary camera
like ProRes Log like all of that kind of stuff we don't really get that kind of stuff in Android
phones that often and it's nice that they're like,
okay,
now we have a physical button so that you can attach it to this and then
add the grid lines and do all this stuff and just try to make it like a
B cam.
You're not using Asus log.
I think that kind of wraps into my last point really well.
Log.
Log.
Oh my God.
That's all right.
No,
no,
no,
no,
no.
That was too good.
Um, but Apple is not the first person to add a camera button onto a phone but this is proof again that they're never the first but when they do
when they add something they generally do a really good job because they like
obviously thought super deep into this by having different types of pressing scrolling
interacting with the ui super super well. So they did a really good job
with adding something so small
that's been done multiple times before.
The Xperia phones had the camera shutter as well.
Does this now mean that Apple
has the most complicated camera?
No.
No.
What do you think is the most complicated camera?
Sony.
Sony.
Still?
Yeah, even after adding this.
The experience.
Yeah, they have a bunch of apps and everything about the
app just looks exactly like a so an alpha an alpha camera yeah yeah and now you can't say
we'd ever talk about xperia phones but yeah the the pro really is still mostly just a better camera yeah and there are i guess a couple other things yeah
because like i i can't buy an 800 60 hertz phone i can't do it yeah i just there's something in my
brain that just like sees the chop and i can't use 60 hertz phone anymore yeah but there are a ton
of people who literally don't care i was reading a reddit thread as i got on the plane that like
made me really mad
and is probably why I didn't get too much sleep.
Which is, there are people who will use a phone for a while
and then they'll try a 120 hertz phone
and they'll go, oh, this scrolling is too smooth.
No way.
And they'll want to go back to 60 hertz.
That's real people.
That's real?
I was reading a thread about 60 hertz iPhone.
People were like, yeah, I gave it to my cousin
and he was like, ew, it's too smooth.
Oh, come on.
Why don't you shoot 60 FPS? That's my cousin he was like ew it's too smooth oh come on so that why don't you shoot 60 fps that's an all weird um so it's mainly people
are getting the pro for the camera and there are things like 4k 120 hertz or 4k 120 fps video
that's sick which by the way is enabled by the fusion camera yep and the a18 pro probably uh
and it's things like a larger brighter display great it's the same actually brightness oh so
just bigger you can get a 6.9 inch display that was this is the thing though like they both go
down to one nit now they both go up to 2000 nits It's the exact same display except for the ProMotion.
Yeah.
Well, and the size with the bezels, I guess.
Yeah.
And that extra telephoto lens.
Yeah.
And the GPU core.
Like, you're not, it's not a whole ton.
The one core.
So, the Pro phones are more expensive and are titanium, but that's really all you're getting.
I mean, I think, yeah, faster, is it faster MagSafe?
No, they, so, this is an update across the 16 line is that they all now support 25 watt magsafe which okay i think because they kind of donated the the magsafe thing to chi 2 but chi 2
chargers on the iphones will only charge at 15 watts but now apple is selling new magsafe pucks
that you have to buy separately new ones yeah that charge at 25 watts but you have toSafe pucks that you have to buy separately. New ones, yeah. That charge at 25 watts, but you have to use these pucks.
Yeah.
So, yeah.
So that's not just a pro feature.
No, that's on all of them.
Okay.
You get the faster USB 3.0 transfer speeds like you always have on the pros versus the USB 2.0.
So when you shoot that 4K 120 FPS video and you have like a 3,000 gigabyte file,
you can get it off the phone faster.
I pitched a StudioShore idea to Eric of speed running how fast you can use all the storage on a baseline iphone oh easy you just
like pro res log how how fast can you open the box set it up and just immediately shoot a 4k 120
pro res and just like a video yeah that would be really funny yeah so yeah that's you know they're the same prices too
it's $7.99 to start the 16 plus $8.99 the pro $9.99 and the pro max $11.99 sneaky update maybe
battery maybe oh right tbd they said they made the batteries bigger they may yeah and so they
have the longest battery life ever in an iphone pro phones they're even bigger apparently than in
the than the regular ones yeah so we'd looked
into this a little bit more and you found that on the compare site for apple they're saying like
video playback goes from 20 to 22 hours yeah so that's from regular to pro from 15 to 16 15 oh
yeah 15 to 16 yeah so okay slightly better yeah uh i, I want to use it and figure out
if I can tell the difference between
this old phone and the new phone battery-wise,
but I'm never going to be mad at extra battery.
I think that's great.
Yeah.
I mean, I like that they get down to one nit now
because I've complained before about, you know,
laying in bed and being like, ah!
Yeah.
You know?
On a plane.
It's super dark.
Yeah.
So, I guess last but not least is just a brief rant which is
that this whole event was called like it's glow time referring to siri and the new glow animation
and the new apple intelligence stuff and they did not spend a short amount of time talking about
like rehashing all this stuff hey guess what writing tools hey guess what genmoji hey guess what image playground
not a single one of these features launches with the phone yeah and when they opened the iphone
or when they opened up about apple intelligence the first time they called it the heart of the
iphone 16 they tim cook to start the keynote talked about how these were the first iphones
built from the ground up to be apple intelligence i I think he said with AI and machine learning.
He said AI and machine learning
in the first one minute of him talking.
Yeah.
Artificial intelligence, not even Apple intelligence.
Artificial intelligence.
And to their credit, they might be right.
Like these phones have faster neural engines.
They have, I'm sure, lots of memory
and will be really good at this.
But they don't launch with it.
They're not ready yet.
And by the time they do launch, they will be in beta, and it's still kind of slowly rolling out.
And this is what I talked about in the impressions video is, okay, I've literally reviewed the Rabbit.
I reviewed the Humane Pin.
I have to talk about the products as they
exist when i review them and when i review the iphone 16 it will not have any of these features
and i have to review it without any of these features yeah how do we also review all of the
features that they're promising if they're not there at launch do a later video you should just
do like the intelligence video later on do your section card like we've been doing and it just says like apple
intelligence and then it goes to the next it's just like the top down set with nothing in it
and a cricket chirping and then clicks out of it yeah i might have to do that because that that is
i'm looking forward to a lot of them and i've been using them in the ios 18.1 developer beta that's out now. Yeah.
There is no iOS 18.1 developer beta for the iPhone 16 yet. It's cool.
So, yeah, look, it's the iPhone.
It's glow time.
It's Apple intelligence everywhere.
It's the heart.
Shipping without a heart.
It's not going to be on the phone when it comes out, just so you know.
Yeah.
Even the advanced, like, search for your photos better, like, that's not even. That's not there either. Yeah. Even the advanced like search for your photos better. Like that's not even.
That's not there either.
Yeah.
Anything in the Apple intelligence umbrella.
So.
It's crazy.
Yeah.
It's crazy.
It's crazy town even.
I don't know.
It's like.
Population.
Like.
What?
October is when the 18.1 public beta comes out.
It's not even when 18.1.
So when is 18.1 even coming out? it's not even when 18.1 so when is 18.1 even coming out it could not
even come out this year yeah that'd be much later that would be so wild if it didn't come out this
if you bought an iphone for this much money and didn't get the heart of it yeah for four months
yeah i feel like this isn't the last time we're going to be having this problem that's why okay
growing i agree with that and which is why i feel like there has to be an adjustment to the golden rule that i've said so
many times because the golden rule as i've said it is to never buy a product based on the promise
of future software updates and that's why we talk about cars and phones and and anything that has
some beta vaporware promise that never
comes out. We can always be like, told you so, like you should buy the thing that you like now
and use it expecting it to be that way forever. And any software updates are a bonus. However,
with all these AI features constantly being slowly rolled out and not being ready to ship,
getting announced, but not coming out till later it feels like there
needs to be some dimension of do we trust the company that this comes from and how likely is
this software update to actually come out because there are there are levels to this there is tesla
autopilot levels of willis ever come out pixel drop there's yeah pixel feature drops there's
you know apple intelligence which we expect to slowly roll out over the next
couple months and years and it's just a question of how likely is this update to actually happen
i think you can say what the company says they will do but also just be extremely clear that
it's not there yet and that yeah maybe at some point it will be there but that can't really affect your
review because this is like the most this is the biggest delta we've ever i have personally ever
seen in a phone where it's like this is the glow time event this is the apple intelligence phone
and the reason apple is selling you to buy this phone is this is the best one for apple
intelligence this one will have all this stuff we're basically reviewing buy it control yeah when you buy it it literally does none of that yeah i can't ignore that but i
there's gonna be some eventual but we can't even we can't even like 18.1 on the 15s doesn't even
have like genmoji or probably the most important part of apple intelligence which is the ability
for siri to reach into apps and do actions for you the whole thing that rabbit said it was going to do
and never released at all because it doesn't exist right apple so far is also vaporware so i would
really like to see this actually come out but we can't even freaking play with it yet but there is
a part of my brain that's like i think i can treat apple and rabbit differently because i have
different levels of trust for them to eventually ship the thing.
That's totally subjective.
I think saying
what they say they will do
but also be like
we can't test it
is...
That I will always say. Could you literally name
iPhone 16 review part one
now and say like, and I have to do a
part two later because half of the
stuff but then what happens when google does this next year or asus in three years that's what i
still think the blanket statement of do not purchase something based so i think the difference
is what you're saying is don't purchase something based on future promises because i still don't
think you should do that yeah because that future promise might not come out. And phone lifespans are much shorter than a car lifespan.
When Tesla was scamming you, you had like,
you're like, well, I'm gonna keep my car for a bit longer.
Maybe it'll come out.
It was sorely disappointing when it didn't for that.
But like, if you're now talking four months
and you upgrade your phone, even every two years,
was that 20% of your phone's life? life 10 of your phone's life now doesn't come with the thing you bought it for yeah
if you're buying it because of that feature that's not out yet i don't think you should we have still
never seen how the siri reaching into apps or the genmoji even works we've seen just screenshots of
like you didn't see cowboy frog what are you talking about well i saw the existence of cowboy frog but i did not see the genesis of cowboy frog and that is what
i'm interested the origin story yeah it's like that it's like it's like the slit experiment
like if you look at the light it's a wave and other times if you look at cowboy frog it
it exists but if you don't it's not generated yet yeah deep cut for my physics nerds out there
yeah what's that called again double slit experiment what's the phenomenon called
quantum entanglement no no that's i've literally superposition quantum superposition
the double the double schrodinger's
act as both particles and waves yeah i guess that guess that's what it's called. It's this double-slit experiment.
Quantum mechanics, sure.
If you want to answer the question,
does it behave like a particle or a wave?
The answer is literally,
it depends if you look at it or not.
Yeah, sort of.
So it's the bear sh** in the woods?
Yeah.
Schrodinger's bear wave guys i think
this apple intelligence thing is genius hot take why right because rabbit ai company ai features
came out big stinker humane yeah because they didn't come ai company big big come out big
stinker apple's doing it right, man.
They just got to keep picking the can down the road.
Never release this stuff.
They'll get all the, eventually,
all this AI stuff, it'll pass.
We'll be over it.
And then they can just quietly.
Back into the distance.
Yeah, put it under the covers.
We'll all forget about it.
They raised so much capital, so much hype,
and never had to hurt anybody.
You know, you say that, Ellis,
but like, that's a real strategy.
I mean, yeah. That some companies use. Yeah. Full self-driving. That's anybody. You know, you say that Ellis, but like, that's a real strategy. Some companies use.
Yeah.
Full self drive is true.
Yeah.
Where even like, I'm trying to think of another good example, but like a device
will launch and the one like kind of cool headline maker demo feature will be like
shown at the beginning, but then it won't launch with it.
And then after like a long
time it'll quietly get added back into the background deep fusion apple did this i know
fusion because deep fusion is like not that cool like i have a headline like i'm thinking of like
a big tech demo thing well they tried to make it seem cool yeah i don't know i want to think of a
better example but literally something where it's like oh this this would be really cool if it worked
and like oh wow this is the one that has it nobody else has it so it goes on sale and people buy it
and they're like this is so cool yeah and even sometimes reviewers will get a beta version so
we get to like show it on camera yeah and then it just won't ship for like forever yeah god i want
to go surface duo software does that a lot with software google will like announce something and
then they'll just like wait so long to release it that people like announce something and then they'll just like
wait so long to release it that people forget about it and then there'll be some rant well that
that's never coming out not even generative ai can fix the chain lane fence man that's that's
forever gone do you know how every well i don't know if every iphone has done this but you know
how like after six months they release a new color to like drum up hype for the iphone again yeah
do you think that's what these ai features are going to be now moving forward they release
the phone and then like in six months you'll get all these cool other ai features that would be
like at the apple event they announced the purple iphone and then that didn't come out till spring
imagine them announcing a color at the event and saying it's not we're still working on it
we're still engineering it. Guys, orange
is really hard. And you can pre-order
it right there.
That's kind of how it feels sometimes.
That's how it's going to feel. We all take it for granted
that software takes time, so the development
of it and fixing bugs will take time.
We all just kind of understand that, but it kind of
just feels like they'll just drop
it whenever they want.
We don't know when it's coming out.
Yeah, we have no idea.
When is Genmoji coming out?
We don't know.
I don't know.
And I'm so frustrated because I've been working on a video about Genmoji for like six months.
I actually think Genmoji looks really cool.
Well, too bad.
Yeah, I know.
It's not coming out for a while.
Watch my half an hour video essay in two years when it finally comes out.
Yeah.
So anyway, we should stop ranting we should we're
gonna review the phone we do here we're gonna review the phones eventually it's our whole
purpose stay tuned for that and uh yeah i don't know let us know what you think of these uh are
they vaporware are they coming soon should we have some degree of like how much do we trust
the company i'm just curious if you just leave your comments about that i want to read some
if this episode gets 10 000 likes marques won't even review the iPhone 16.
Yeah, also, not enough of you guys liked the previous episode, so Marques came back.
We were trying to take him off the podcast.
Oh, is that what happened?
My bad.
So now, go like and subscribe.
Yeah, go like and subscribe.
We're going to take a quick break.
We've got to talk about PS5 Pro, some other quick stuff.
But before we do take that quick break we gotta talk
about trivia trivia dude all right question two were you paying attention thank you ellis nice
beat question two speaking of apple intelligence features that may never ship they had one where
instead of asking the person
what kind of dog they had they pointed a camera oh my that was the picture hold on sorry that was
the funniest interaction like fake interaction ever it's just this woman walking her dog and a
guy comes up and like doesn't ask what kind of dog it is and just takes the photo of the dog
he gets on one knee he asks takes a photo of the worst part is
he goes can i take a picture of your dog and she goes sure and then he goes that siri what kind of
i'm right here bro second question what kind of dog was it i remember oh i remember that you know
this hell yeah did it say i'm not gonna tell you why it'm not. It did say. But I think I know. I got to write this down right now.
I think it was like a... Save it for later.
I'm stuck between two, and I think they're just similar looking dogs.
It was a mix.
Right?
It was a cat.
We were going to say if it could figure out what kind of dog Boris is, because even the...
It's a cat dog.
And then it just gaslights you um, it's a cat. And then it just gaslights you.
So it'll just immediately write to your doctor.
Like delusional needs help.
What kind of dog is this?
This is a bag of chips.
That's what the rabbit would do.
Well,
anyway,
we'll think about those answers.
There'll be at the end,
like usual.
We'll be right back.

All right, welcome back.
That was a lot of Apple news,
but we also have some other very big news
in the technology sphere this week.
For some reason, everyone decided to drop all the stuff
the week of the Apple event,
which is usually the worst possible thing to do.
I think it's a red flag.
Probably.
If you decide to announce your thing the day of the iphone announcement
yeah that's what i said to miles i think that's what i said to miles because canon
put out yeah canon put out a new camera they put out a new camera and i was like oh so it's
i think red flag or like delusional confidence. Yeah. Very, yeah, very, very.
Last year.
Okay.
Yeah, that's true.
Because last year the Fuji GFX 100 Mark II came out the same day.
And Fuji asked me like, hey, you doing anything on September 10th?
And they asked me that in April.
And I was like, the Apple event is that day probably.
And they were like, whatever.
And I was like, guys, what are yeah whatever even even all the camera
reviewers are at the Apple event yeah so they can't be at your event yeah that
happened to oneplus not that long ago anyway so what happened what happened
this week uh okay PlayStation 5 pro for all my gamers out there I'm not a gamer
really I played it actually I tried dead wait did you try that actually did you try deadlock i did not
yet someone did stuff when i get someone did uh tweet at me and asked if i tried it yet i need to
try it still okay anyway uh sony has been hyping like very low key the playstation 5 for a long
period of time through like little intentional leaks that they've been doing the pro the pro
sorry playstation 5 pro yeah uh and they finally
officially announced it they'd had like an 11 minute technical demo presentation with the guy
that's in charge of the engineering hey hey it was 20 minutes but 10 of those minutes were a countdown
nice okay uh it is better than the normal ps5 in a few key ways. It has a bigger GPU with 45% faster rendering
and 67% more compute units and 28% faster memory.
It is also using PlayStation's new spectral super resolution,
which is like NVIDIA DLSS, which is an upscaler.
And the whole point of it is to try to not make users
choose between fidelity and frame rate.
This is basically everything that they were talking about during the technical presentation.
They were like, you have the option of doing higher fidelity, but then the frame rate is like 30 FPS or lower.
Or you can do higher frame rate but lower resolution.
Now, the very funny thing about this presentation was they showed a bunch of games on PS5 versus PS5 Pro.
And they were like, wow, look at the graphical difference.
And you could see zero difference.
They looked exactly the same.
Like, it was very, very, very difficult to see any difference between the games.
very difficult to see any difference between the games so it seems kind of wild to release like a pro version of this when they're not releasing any games that with it that like need to take
advantage of the the resolution or the fidelity um and it's also 700 well there are some i guess
i'm assuming that like the games now that make you choose won't make you choose anymore because
right now when i play like there's a there's like a racing game where it's like do you want
like full 4k and lower frame rate or do you want like the high like the shadows and ray tracing
and all that but like lower and i imagine all of those games will not make me choose anymore
which just maxes out everything yeah so that's cool that's cool but like he was showing the
differences between the lower resolution and the higher frame rate and you really could not tell
the difference between the lower resolution and the higher resolution versions you'd probably have
to be pixel peeping yeah it was like if you zoom in into this back corner across the street you
could see that miles morale's reflection is staring at this yeah it was just it was the most minor
thing ever,
so a lot of people are kind of upset about it.
It does have some other upgrades.
It can now support 8K.
Nobody has an 8K display, so it doesn't matter.
It now has Wi-Fi 7.
It does have 8K TVs.
Technically.
I don't have an 8K TV.
Yeah.
Now it comes with a 2TB SSD
with an SSD expansion slot available.
Wow.
But there is no disc option and
instead they will be selling an 80 disc attachment for your physical rate can i just say games and
blu-ray even the chrysler pacifica had a blu-ray player and the ps5 pro does not dang but the
chrysler pacifica costs 50 000 and this is what you said 700 said $700? Yeah. Yeah. Wow. That should have a disc.
That should have a disc. That's the one that, the Pro is the one that should have a disc player.
Well, there was a disc version and a discless version of the regular PS5.
Right.
So, yeah.
But the discless version was kind of, like, assuming people were going to buy all their
games in the store and not, like, have local media.
And they probably will have less games.
Yeah.
Because they're all, like like on the console yeah but
the people who have like a ton of games are going to want the disc yeah and the pro either that or
just a lot of storage as a 2k player do you buy the disc or do you know because i know there's a
lot of sports people who like that because like whoever's the cover of like the nhl game each
year is like a big news and people like to buy it when like your team
or a player you like is on it yeah it's actually a curse to be on it yeah interesting isn't it i
hope that's not true isn't it uh i know with madden there's the madden curse yeah i think
that's also true about 2k or they just lose so um but yeah you can buy an 80 disc attachment
i can see people getting pretty mad about that.
Yeah, people are pretty upset.
Obviously, maybe they just didn't show good examples of the fidelity being higher.
And maybe it'll be better in person, but who knows?
Anyway, you can get a PS5 Slim right now for $500.
Yeah.
So, yeah. It's going gonna be coming out september 26th
uh i'm sorry pre-order is open on september 26th and the launch is november 7th okay enough time
for us to like do tech timber stuff and still get our hands on this and be on time yes sick uh okay
last thing is huawei finally officially uh released in it well announced, announced their Huawei Mate XT tri-fold phone.
And we finally got to see how it folds.
And I felt really dumb when I realized how it folds because I remembered that Huawei foldable phones are exterior folding phones, not interior.
Well, this is both.
Yes.
Yeah.
But the top screen folds exteriorly over. i believe it's top screen right side is
the fold yeah and then that folds out from underneath to be one regular fold and then
that folds out from underneath to be i think doing it with my hands makes it so much more
confusing as a video i think imagine audio i think me trying to do with my hands last time
is what made it so
confusing so i take blame for my only beef is they're calling it a trifold but it's actually
a twofold this is actually what i would like every foldable to be because it is a 6.4 inch display
when it is closed but then when you open it it is a horizontal aspect ratio 10.2 inch 3K display,
which is so sick.
The problem I have with the hamburger,
no, hot dog style foldables right now,
like the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold
or the Galaxy Z Fold 6 or whatever, or the OnePlus Fold,
is that when you open them up,
it's like a square aspect ratio.
And then you don't really get that much better
screen real estate and widescreen videos because they have to crop in so it crops a ton this will actually give you
wider it still will definitely have black bars it'll be like an ipad yeah it's awesome yeah it's
so sick what do you think the creases are like they're the photos look like they were pretty
intense except when you're looking at it full on a straight on apparently you don't really notice it
to be fair i feel like a lot of folding phones are like that yeah it's easy to get a good glare and see it
yeah most of the time when you're using it it's pretty good at not noticing it quite as much you
can also use one two or three of the panels at a time so one would be when it's closed two would
be one of them is still folded around the back which i assume is for like when you're taking pictures
of another person so they can see themselves when you're taking the photo so it's like half open oh
okay yeah and then three is when it's all the way open in tablet mode wow there's so many so many
different phones in one yeah and they were like they were like touting the same amount as three
phones yeah this is like the the like men's five-in-one shampoo conditioner body wash as a phone.
They were touting that you should be using it with a keyboard and a mouse, which is really
sick.
I just love this.
I want to see it so bad.
Yeah.
If I had to say, depending on how it all works, that type of folding out size is what I would
be okay with going into a fold because I would want a significant difference in when you open it up all the way.
And this is that.
Yeah.
It still looked a little bit chunky,
but I would use that for the convenience
of having a giant tablet.
Wow.
$2,800?
Yeah, $2,800 USD.
3K?
That's great.
Going back to our earlier conversation
about you're either delusional or very confident
they announced this a couple hours after the on purpose yeah yeah which by the way this was the
perfect year to do it because this was like the least innovative iphone year agreed true it got
some hype it has four million pre-orders yeah we're talking about it at least that's what they
said that's what they said that's what huawei there clearly was hype around this yeah like i saw a lot of it on twitter and tech twitter at least and yeah it's i mean we can't even use it in the
u.s right so no it's not that big of a deal for us personally i want to see it but i think people
are pumped about this yeah i really want to check it out i just want to play with that like a tech
demo yeah which is so cool yeah i don't know i think it's going to be a number of years before
we see a u.s manufacturer start making something like this unfortunately who's going to do the
first quad fold it's probably that's basically crumple phone it's it's quad fold is crumple phone
or like it's going to fold like this and then fold in yeah yeah it goes out and then also and
then also like a map the huawei origami and then when you flip it up it has a little fortune written inside
well on that note we've talked about this fun enough we should uh we should wrap this up we've
talked a lot uh last thing we should do is get to the answers to the trivia questions. Trivia time.
I have to leave my answer to the second question at the bottom because I don't want to forget it.
But I wrote it already.
And you never forget.
Do you want to just do the second question first?
Oh.
Okay.
Yeah.
I was kind of expecting you guys to say no,
but I thought that would be funny.
All right.
Why not?
Let's switch it up.
You paying attention.
All right. Quick update on the score marquez with 16 andrew in the lead with 20
david following up with 19 yo andrew how's your back feel like for real well i mean you've got
i have a kid now so you've like relieved a lot you're not carrying that one anymore bro you've
got all that weight off.
I'm carrying the one. That's crazy.
You know who's actually carrying the one?
Google.
I'm not sure why. At some point in the past,
we wrote my name down on the score sheet
and carried the one.
Did you answer?
Google with negative three.
And Marques, while you were gone, David Pierce hopped on
for a productivity checkup with Andrew.
So he got a point as well.
So he's on the board.
Carrying the one.
I have added three tasks to my Google task.
And I did those tasks and I never checked them off.
You're halfway there.
You're halfway there.
You did the important part.
Yeah, I did it for David.
All right.
Here's your question.
Okay.
During the event, when they were showing off apple's
visual intelligence which is basically just google lens someone walked up to a dog and instead of
asking them what kind of dog it was took a picture of it and used apple intelligence to identify
the breed what breed was that animal
do you have to spell it right no okay
the look marquez just gave me Do you have to spell it right? No. Okay.
The look Marquez just gave me.
Dave, you're really focused over there.
Yeah.
Are you trying to figure out how to spell it, or are you just so confident?
He's writing in cursive.
Yeah, writing in cursive.
Oh, God.
Oh, no.
Flip them and read. What do you got? I didn't look like that. Oh, no. Flip him and read.
What do you got?
Oh, that's the... It was an Australian sheepdog thing.
Wait. Cattle dog and sheepdog
I think are two very different dogs.
Really?
You're trying to say Australian cattle dog
because that's the other thing I was thinking of
because these two dogs kind of bear resemblance.
It does look like what you wrote, but
I'm pretty sure it said Australian Cattle Dog
when it was on the keynote stage.
Damn it.
Angie, why'd you give that to him?
Blue Heeler.
They look pretty similar, right?
That sounds like a Magic the Gathering card.
Blue Heeler.
David?
I read you right.
Doll?
Nation? yeah david i read you right why did you write doll nation no nation uh wait hold on hold on that's good thank you what there's no difference between a blue healer and an australian cattle
dog okay well then they are the same breed that's impressive okay all right whatever i noted that
it said australian cattle dog because it was just in australia and i was like oh cool australian
cattle dogs that's why i remembered it but i get that i guess that's correct yeah i thought blue I noted that it said Australian Cattle Dog because it was just in Australia. And I was like, oh, cool, Australian Cattle Dogs.
That's why I remembered it.
But I guess that's correct.
I thought Blue Heeler was a kind of Australian Cattle Dog.
What's the difference?
Okay.
I think that should probably count.
All Blue Heelers are Australian Cattle Dogs,
but not all Australian Cattle Dogs are Blue Heelers.
So the dog in the keynote.
No, no, so that means i was on the right side right
well not that means that the dog in the keynote was not necessarily a blue healer
interesting technically what do you think nope no i'm fine with not getting it sorry this is
very funny though in this it says but what about the blue healer do they measure up to the australian
cattle dog characteristics they most certainly do because they are the same breed measure up to the Australian cattle dog characteristics? They most certainly do because they are the same breed.
Measure up?
Wow.
Because I was also looking for,
they show the words Australian cattle dog on the phone.
I remember that. That's what I was looking for.
I think it's pretty impressive that I remember the dog.
Every time I saw a dog in Australia,
I was like, oh, that's an Australian.
All dogs are Australian dogs.
That's Australian.
That's an Australian poodle.
That's an Australian German shepherd.
I'm having fun.
This is a great episode.
But Apple did say 3D twice during their event.
What two products did they say 3D during?
And yes, I realize now only after asking the question.
How specific do you have to be on the product?
Like, give me an example yes if there's a pro and uh what do you think i feel like i'm if you guys
yeah i need i need i need specific because otherwise there's only like three products
and you need to name two of them
i really did not do a good job with this question i tried to give
specific all right who wants to go oh burst i wrote airpods 4 apple watch 10 wait wait let me
make sure it wasn't the ultra i'm pretty sure it was the it. It wouldn't be the Ultra. The Ultra already exists. Stumbled. Ultra's flat.
No.
What?
It was, in fact.
Really?
The Ultra.
Are you sure?
What were they saying? What would they say was 3D about the Ultra?
Was 3D anodized black?
Wait.
Yep, it's the Ultra.
One point for David. Really is what is the 3d well
i'll tell you after i go around oh i just said airpods for an airpods max well i said airpods
and airpods and apple watch you said airpods even though i'm right twice i'm wrong twice
wait here's marquez did give the specific examples so i said airpods
with 3d audio tracking and i said apple watch with the 3d curved display
so i'm definitely not right unfortunately all right so so it's apple watch ultra it's 3d it's
they described the apple watch ultra band the new one by hermes as 3D, which is stupid because it's a physical object.
Specifically, they said it's made of a 3D knit
as if to explain to us that it is not, in fact,
part of the f***ing chalk zone.
Like, I don't...
That one I was at home watching
and my jaw hit my couch.
I was just like, Jesus Christ.
You didn't say 4D.
Yeah, right. And then the other time they used the word 3d was to describe the 3d photogrammetry they used to map
quote thousands of ears that's right in preparation for the new airpods god i wish i was one of those But Marquez, you have 17 points now with your dog point.
Andrew, or excuse me, David, second place, still one point behind with 20.
Carrying the one.
And Andrew, big cheddar himself, in the lead with 21 points.
I can't wait till some dog breed expert bullies you guys
and I get another point by next week.
I welcome that.
Because,
I'm not even going to finish that sentence.
