Welcome back to We Are Chelsea, the official podcast of Chelsea Women, brought to you in association with Skoda,
the official car partner for Chelsea women and proud support as a women's sport.
I'm in Warbank and today I'm joined by a centreback and a goalkeeper who've known each other for years,
so we're putting that to the test to find out just how well they really know each other.
We'll also be catching up on a busy few weeks and getting their verdict on some of your dilemmas.
This is We Are Chelsea with Kedisha Buchanan and Becky Spencer.
Well, welcome back to the podcast.
It's lovely to have you both again.
How are you both today?
Alright, how are you?
I'm great.
Thank you so much.
Is that the first time someone's asked you if you were right?
It sounded like it, didn't it?
You guys have just come back from an international break.
What is it, like, team-wise, when you're on an international break.
Do you all keep in touch?
Yeah, I mean, I think everyone takes a break away from each other,
and it's kind of a nice, like, break and time away just to, like,
speak about everyone else's experiences and catch up with other people
and see, you know, how they've been getting on.
So it's quite a nice break.
Do you all have a massive catch-up when you get back to Cobbett?
Yeah, I think it's a little bit
Like you always ask like how did the games go
How are you feeling?
What's the group chat like?
Is anybody on it or is it fairly quiet?
No, chat.
Group chat's dead.
Tumbled.
I reckon it might be archived for a little bit
When is it at its busiest?
I think if we're arranging stuff like as a team maybe
It's busy then, isn't it?
Yeah, team social.
Yeah, team social.
Or on off days when people have to come in from media
You've got to change things around.
I think that's the busiest.
Is that when people are putting the group chat on me?
I tried, but then I got a message from Sonia, so that was it.
It must be really cool coming back and celebrating the things that have happened.
Because, I mean, for example, this time, Lexi's made her England debut.
What's that like as a team to be able to celebrate?
I think we're very happy for her.
Even her getting a call up when she was at training.
I think we all celebrated.
We all clap for her.
And if you know, Lexi, she hates that.
She hates the attention on her.
So we made it that much louder for her.
So it was fun.
It's like embarrassment with love.
It's such a great start to the season.
Obviously with Lexi's debut and the team have been really pulling it together.
It must be really exciting to see so many players coming through
and making a name for themselves.
What is that like to watch?
Yeah, I think it's nice because you're kind of waiting, you know, for their time.
And I think, like, you know, looking at Lexi, she's kind of been patient and waited for her moment.
And, you know, she's gotten a few starts and she's been excellent in all the games.
So it's kind of what, you know, what she deserves.
So I think, you know, we're just, everyone's just trying to drag everyone through.
And, yeah, obviously we're just proud of everyone that comes through.
Do you find yourself in a position where you're actively wanting to give younger players advice or where they're coming to you for advice?
Yeah, I think, you know, as senior players, I think it's kind of like our responsibility.
You know, there's times where I think younger players don't always ask for advice
or they may not feel like they want to ask because they may feel embarrassed or whatever.
But I feel like the younger players, they do ask quite a lot of advice from players, which is nice.
So it's quite a nice dynamic that everyone has.
And yeah, we can always give advice and they always tell us stuff as well.
So it's actually quite a nice way to go.
It's like asking them what they think about stuff.
And they're quite open and honest.
So it's actually really nice.
Can you remember what the best piece of advice you were given as a younger player?
I think the advice that I got given was from a player called Rachel Yankee
when I was playing for Arsenal
I think she's just said to me like when you know you know
and this was in time when I needed to go on loan to a different team
and I was like waiting and she's like when you know you know
and then I kind of like realised when I knew that I needed to go
it yeah obviously that advice that stuck with me now until this point
so it's actually really good advice that she gave me
do any of the younger players remind you of yourselves when you were starting out
No
I think Chloe
Because she's quite quiet
And I was really quiet
Even like when I was on the senior team
For Canada
So I think yeah
Being a young player
Playing like many years up
I think
Yeah years is a bit quiet
But I don't know
But when you see Chloe
She she can do great things
And I feel like
In that moment
Like you're there for a reason
And I think she knows that
She's here
Because she can play
She reminds me of myself
When I was younger
It's funny that you brought Chloe up
because when she was on the podcast,
she was teaching me what six, seven was.
And I felt about millions at there,
because I'd got no idea.
Do you find that a lot with the younger players,
that they're bringing stuff into training,
and you're like, what are you talking about?
I mean, I think it was when Coxie was here,
and we was on pre-season,
and I was sat on the table with Lucy,
was next to me,
and it was Lexi and Coxie sitting next to each other,
and the conversation was crazy,
because me and Lucy didn't have a clue what they were talking about,
and I was just like,
what they were on about?
but it's obviously like TikToks and stuff
and I don't even have that.
So when they're talking about it,
I end up just laughing and just
pretending like I know these days.
Often find yourself learning new things.
Talking football,
Keish, you, congratulations,
because I know that you passed 150 caps
a while back for Canada,
but you were honoured before the game in Toronto
so close to home.
Did any of your family come?
Well, thank you very much.
And also my family does come to Toronto games
in massive numbers,
so they were all there.
supporting me and supporting the team.
It must be so great to have them all there.
Yeah, it is fun and a lot of times you can hear them.
Is that a good thing?
Yeah, that's a good thing.
Don't really hear what they're saying.
All you hear is like shouting and stuff like that.
So I think it helps for the stadium's like atmosphere and stuff like that.
When you're talking big numbers, how many are you talking?
It's usually like more than like 80 a game.
Oh my gosh.
Yeah.
I don't even think I could like name that many people.
No.
And that's like minimum.
Your fan club must be huge.
Nah, it's massive.
We played against Canada a couple of years ago in Canada.
It's Jamaica versus Canada in the Olympic playoff.
And I was texting key.
I was like, how many of you got coming?
She was like, oh, about 50.
And I thought she was joking.
But she really did have 50 people there.
That's insane.
I think I was just in Jamaica.
Yeah, yeah.
You could nearly fill a stadium.
I think I can between like family friends and family.
Oh my gosh, I'm really jealous.
It is fun.
I bet your family Christmas must be huge.
Yeah, it is, but.
What do you have to do, rent a cruise shit?
We just do Airbnb.
You were honoured alongside Jesse and Ashley,
who you've shared a dressing room for both Chelsea and Canada.
What did it mean to be able to celebrate that milestone together?
Yeah, it felt really nice.
I think we came up under the same time.
So it's nice that we're still kicking the ball around
and we're still on the pitch together,
so that was a really nice moment for us
and Ashley, known each other since U-9.
So I think that's always great to,
you have a lot of milestones and, like,
awards that we celebrate together,
so which is quite nice as well.
If you could talk to a 17-year-old,
Keish making a debut back in 2013,
what would you tell her?
I feel like I'm still quite similar person
that I was back then.
I'll just say, just keep being yourself.
Just keep being your more authentic self.
I think that's really good advice for young footballers to hear in general.
Becky, you made your professional debut at 14.
Do you feel like a different person now?
No, I think I've, obviously, I've grown up a lot and had to mature.
I had to mature really quickly, obviously, been in a senior environment at 14.
But I've pretty much stayed consistent and stayed the same
and, you know, always had the same morals and stood up for what I believed in.
whether people didn't like it or if they did.
So I think that's something that, you know,
I think most players should kind of carry through their careers
because we're all separate people
and we all shouldn't be like kind of tied into the same brush.
It's so interesting hearing
because the pair of you both had really, really young debuts.
I don't know what I was up to at 14 and 17.
It must take a certain amount of discipline at that age
and it's got to be like self-taught as well
to step into senior football.
Is there any advice?
that you'd give to younger players.
You've got to really believe in, like, a dream
and what you want in life.
I think me coming from a big family,
there's a lot of chaos that's happening
and, you know, all the siblings doing other things
that maybe some people say,
oh, I want to do that
because my sister Melissa is doing that.
But for me, I'm like football's life
and I don't really care what they were doing.
I just love football.
And if I knew I had game Saturday morning,
I'm asleep.
I don't really care if they're out partying or anything.
So I think it's just your mindset.
Like what do you really want?
Like what are you hungry for?
And you just got to stay on task.
Yeah, I think for me, like I'm one of five and my sisters played football.
So I was kind of like following in their footsteps.
But I didn't know that when I got to this age, that women's football would be so big.
So for me, like I just enjoyed it.
And I just wanted to make them proud, really.
And just make my family proud.
And that was always my goal to continue playing.
And yeah, just do the best that I could.
Did either of you imagine that you'd still be doing it
You'd still be doing football a decade later?
Yeah, I hope so
Maybe even a decade more, but we'll see
This is rare, it's that we are Chelsea
2036
Still dreaming
You can do it though, I think
Well, she put it in you
Yeah, if you could do it, I definitely couldn't
Kish out of all 150 plus caps
Is the one moment that you pick as your favourite
I think it was
One in the Olympics in Tokyo
Putting on that jersey
that was a very special moment for myself, my family and our country.
Yeah, because representing your country is one thing,
but representing your country on such a huge stage.
Exactly.
It's something to be proud of.
You've also had a really strong start to this season.
How are you feeling?
Yeah, I feel really good.
I think I'm just still working into the season.
I still feel like I have a lot more to give
and really just going after just getting better.
Yeah, because you've had a long road back from injury.
How does it feel to be playing?
this well again. Yeah, it feels good for sure, like just getting back to my normal self and,
you know, doing all those rehab sessions, like, it's definitely flourishing at the moment.
And yeah, I feel, I feel really good. So I just want to keep it that way and, you know, just stay
healthy. Becky, what do you think's been the best thing about Keisha's game this season?
I think just like her, like, she's been so aggressive on the field and she's just like, just a rock at the back.
And I think, you know, everyone appreciates her in the team
and she's so calm and collected.
And you kind of need, you know, you need a head like that in the team
when, you know, times are tough or, you know, things can get out of hand
or whatever it is.
I feel like Keisha's a consistent for everyone.
And, yeah, she's just been solid.
And some of the tackles that she's made and stuff like that has been amazing.
So, yeah, hopefully she can continue and, yeah, keep getting better.
What do you think from a golf keeper's point of view
makes a good centre back?
One that doesn't let any shots come in on goal.
To be fair, I've seen, you know, some of Keish's highlights and, you know, Hannah's kind of celebrating with her, you know, when she makes some big tackles and stuff.
I think there was one just on Sunday and you can see Hannah's reaction.
And it's just perfect.
That's what we want.
We just want the ball away from us and, you know, keep our job at a minimum.
And the reverse question, Keish, what do you think makes a good goalkeeper from a defender's point of view?
I would say communication, I think, is key.
Being able to play back to a goalkeeper and she could ping a ball, 80.
yards, 50 yards, I think she does your job as well.
Like she can play out the back as well.
Yeah, just like leadership is, I think, is one of the main things, like leading from the back,
putting us all in positions so they don't have to make the safe.
So I think they do a great job at that.
And, you know, obviously being a top shot blocker, pulling out some worldies time to time.
We're also grateful for.
For the birth of you in your respective positions, what, who's the hardest to face in
training goalkeeper or defender.
Well, it depends.
Yeah.
Like in a 5-5 side, I think our goalkeepers, like, they're really up their game.
Like, it's like, they make some, like, unbelievable saves, like, all of them, like, every
single goalkeeper that we have, like, it is crazy and it's, like, fun to watch.
But then on the other side, we're like, come on, just let one go go in.
Like, give us her chance, please.
Manika's been back training recently, and we've just.
had a session with her now and I can't tell where she's going to shoot. She's got them hips where
she can like open up and go like left or right and I'm just like I don't know what to do and I said
to her can you give us a chance because she was literally scoring so many goals today and I think
yeah we're kind of happy to see her back in training and you know hopefully being back with the
squad soon so yeah she's really tough to face. Yeah in Keish you must be able to speak on this as well
having come back from injury it must be really encouraging as a team to see somebody back in their
element and thriving.
Is that important from the injury point of view if you're coming back to the team for
that energy to be there?
Yeah, I think this team does a fantastic job of, you know, just encouraging players and
giving them the support that they need, whether it's on or off the field.
And I can only speak from my experience.
Like, when I was rehabbing, didn't even touch the field.
Like, when I was in a gym, they're pushing me.
They're celebrating my wins as well.
And then when I went on the pitch, it's the exact same.
thing like every tackle every pass like they're they're there every step of the way with me so i feel
like manica nay gnats when they come back on even their first cap we're celebrating we're happy
for them we're encouraging them like we're we're big supporters now you two have known each other
for a while and we want to we want to test how well you really know each other so we've got a little
bit of a game you might have seen we've got some little whiteboards for you and here's how the
game's going to work. I'm going to ask a question about Keish. Kish writes down the real answer
and then Becky writes down what she thinks Keish said and then we'll swap so I'll ask a question
about Becky. Becky writes the answer. This could go horribly wrong. So you get one point for
every match and the winner gets bragging rights and maybe drum roll a month off of being off
the podcast. I was looking for some like merchandise I mean I would like your your sweater to be
honest there we go i think we can arrange that quick one from our friends at scurda the official car partner
of chelsea women who make this podcast possible if your weekend's looking a bit in there supermarket
soft play you're the usual suspects maybe you need to check out a chelsea fcdly match and scudor have the perfect
car to get you there maybe the smart electric l rock or if you're hauling the whole crew the spacious
seven-seater coda search scudor to see what takes your fancy and jump into a better weekend okay so first
question. What is Keish's go-to
takeaway order? Can I say
like the cuisine? Yeah.
Okay.
Are you ready?
Yeah. Becky, would you like to reveal what you've put?
Oh, we've got, for the audio
listener, we have Jamaican food.
And what did you put Keish?
Waghers.
Yeah.
What's your go to from Waggers?
The duck.
The soba. Have you tasted that?
Have you had a yakisoba before?
I have had a yakisoba before.
They put like crispy duck on the top of me.
Did they?
Are you guys competitive outside of football?
Depends.
If we're playing like a game of two touch or something,
then we can be.
And Keish likes basketball.
And I think she chooses to play that
because she knows that I get a bit tired after like two minutes.
Are we ready for the next question?
What would Becky's walkout song be?
Oh my day.
Like absolutely nothing.
It's crazy.
You would not choose a song.
Walkout song.
Can I just go for an artist?
Just artists.
Because I'm not good.
but names.
Oh, you have an answer?
Yeah.
This is going to be interested.
Walking the hardest, that one.
Geeks.
Do you know what?
Great.
I would walk out to that.
She knows me better than I know.
Can you sing it?
How does it sound go?
Talking the hardest.
Talking the hardest.
I'm not going to sing it.
This is,
no.
This gives us like.
She's trying to embarrass me on the podcast.
Next.
What's the first thing Keish does
when she lands back in Canada?
I don't know what was happening there.
I was trying to figure out something.
She was drawing a map of where she's going.
She was like, airport.
What's the first thing that she does?
Becky has says, goes to the hotel.
Kish, can you confirm what your answer is?
See family.
But the question was, what does she do when she lands in Canada?
Goes to the hotel?
Well, if I'm there for, like, camp.
But if I'm not there for camp, then I'll see my family.
This game is falling apart in real time.
This is for the course argument.
Let's try and save it back.
I'll get this one right, trust me.
Who in the squad does Becky think is the funniest?
Oh, that's a good question.
There's some telepathy, attempting to happen here.
It's not me, then that's actually.
I don't think of yourself.
I'm not going to think of myself.
Obviously, yeah, aside from yourself.
Oh, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
You've got it right.
Just turn it round.
How do you know?
Oh, that's a point.
We both said, Kira.
We're getting this game back on track.
I was going to say, Erin, because Erin is quite funny.
Yeah, Erin is really funny.
But, Keir is funny.
Kira's funny.
Next question.
What's Keisha's biggest fear?
This should be easy.
Biggest fear.
I know what she doesn't like.
Okay, so Becky, you said,
Cats.
Cats.
My fear?
You're scared of cats.
Are you joking?
What is that saying?
I'm drowning.
You don't like cats?
That's not a big of fear.
It's not a fear, you're right.
That's a bit.
That's a silly, drowning, you know.
This is very quickly.
This has gotten serious, hasn't it?
Gotten serious.
But can you agree?
Drowning is a big fear.
Becky, what's your biggest fear?
That confined spaces, I'd say.
Heights, yeah.
Or like being buried in a...
Yeah, nah, not a bit of me.
Or like in a cave where...
You know, when you see people going in little holes in a cave?
Yeah.
Why do people do that by choice?
If Kish wasn't a footballer, what would she be doing?
This is a brilliant insight.
So have we got a match yet?
We've got coaching or something in law slash detective.
You said, that's a good answer.
That is a good answer.
Are you a detail-oriented person?
Do you like looking for small details and things?
Yeah, when I was in a university, I started out with, like, criminology, but then I had to change my major.
But that was a good one.
It was a good one. It has nothing to do with coaching and, yeah, I'd be a detective.
What would you be doing if you went to footballer, Becky?
Maybe like something in leadership, I reckon.
Like a leadership role.
Fighting for rights somewhere or something like that.
Oh, so you went really high about. I was thinking, yeah, manager.
I was like, yeah, she wants to be a manager.
No, definitely not.
What is the most used emoji in Becky's texts?
I will accept pictures for this.
Are you a big emerging user?
Becky? I wouldn't say so.
Is that
a laughing face or?
I can't see her as let's see. I've just
put laughing. Laughing. I think we can give the point for that.
Is he laughing? I mean it's definitely like
smiley face so I think that's a point.
There's different emojis out there. I think we could give a point for that
because they're both happy emojis. What is Keisha's
hidden talent? I don't even have a hidden
talent so. It's not a hidden talent but it's a talent.
Okay. Then I know then.
if this ain't right.
Oh no.
What did you put?
Basketball.
Ah, dancing.
She's a very good dancer.
Well, she'd go to dance music.
Really, really good dancer.
I don't have a go-to dance move.
You don't?
No.
I just feel the rhythm, feel the vibe.
I genuinely thought you were going to start quoting.
What would Becky's last meal be?
I don't know how I'm going to spell this.
I don't know.
A lemon dessert type thing.
What would you say?
Cive inguini.
I would eat a lemon dessert.
Clearly, we don't know each other all.
The fans have been loving the track suits
that you've been turning up to the games in this season.
Kish, everyone always talks about how into fashion you are.
Do they have your seal of approval, Becky?
Not everyone can pull it off like Kish can.
if that makes sense.
Like I couldn't pull it off like huge.
I mean I'm not, but I'm not doing anything special too.
Like I think Melvin adds like accessories.
I think as a team you're just chilling though.
I do wish we can like do like game day fits or something.
Would you enjoy that or do you think it'd be too much pressure every week?
That's my worst nightmare.
Sorry, but that is my worst.
That is my worst nightmare.
We've got complete opposite ends in the bench.
I'll make an effort for the first time and then after that I'd look like
called nice
I think for me
there's just like levels
like you can still be casual
like a sweater
and then you just like
add a hat at a side bike
and like that's a fit
like it doesn't have to be anything like extra
like you don't need to be doing too much
when you're talking about casual though what's your level
of casual because I until recently thought
it was acceptable to go to the supermarket
and your pyjama bottoms and that's casual for me
that doesn't look like that's got your approval
I mean not
teenager now like that's like
that's teenage stuff
like the pyjamas outside and stuff
you didn't do a full shot no I'm not going to do a full shot
just a quick milk and popping out
just put us some grey sweats
black sweats
getting fashion advice on the podcast now
I'm going to throw away
everything and just get some grey sweats
would you let each other style you for a game
yeah
I would
would you let Becky style you case
for a game
For a game day?
For a game day now.
For a training, yeah.
She's lying.
You've got to be lying.
Yeah, for training.
We've had fans writing with some whistleblower scenarios.
We're going to get you guys to settle the dilemmas that the listeners have sent in.
The first one we've got,
my best friend accidentally sent a screenshot of our private chat
where I was moaning about another friend straight to a group chat with that.
friend did it. She deleted it straight away but it had two reactions already. What do I do?
And who has to apologise to who here? I think you've, I think you've screwed it there, mate.
I mean, she needs to apologise, didn't she? Yeah. For the person that said the bad thing or the one
that screenshot? I think, I think that's double duty. I think you both need to be apologising.
I mean, the one that screenshot, it needs to apologise to the friend that wrote the bad, the friend that
wrote the bad stuff to another friend needs to apologize to that friend but the one who took a
screenshot needs to apologize the screen shot needs to only apologies need to happen that person needs
banning from from text groups honestly they're not the sort of people you want in a group yeah but at the day
you know you shouldn't be talking bad about people you know so keep it a book you were telling to
the face kind of person kish i'm getting the feeling i was in my answer but me i just mind my own
business keep to myself i like it protect your peace
Yeah, protect my peace.
Very wholesome.
I'm not going to be talking bad about people, but I'm just not going to say anything.
Yeah, I think we're all fairly unanimous on this one.
You need to apologise and so does the screenshot her.
Yeah, but I also think the screenshot are you an apology because they're airing your business.
Everyone's apologising.
Yeah, everybody needs to apologise.
Because maybe the friend you were talking about has done something worthy of an apology as well.
Yeah, exactly.
So they might be...
Because, I mean, I don't know what that person's done.
We need more context.
Yeah.
I want to know what the message was.
Yeah.
What she's done.
call back in the second scenario we've got my friend and I do Wordle every morning and
compare scores people still doing Wordle yeah I think so I've just found out she's
been doing it on her laptop first and then doing it on her phone already knowing the
answer and sending me her score yeah she's been beating me for months is this grounds for
a friendship breakup or am I overreacting I don't think it's grounds for a breakup
but it's quite funny that's bent her I think that's an English banter I think
Honestly, that's just you being slow on the draw.
I think it's quite funny.
I think that's brilliant.
I think sometimes you've just got to work smart and not harder.
Yeah, exactly.
And that's what she's doing.
The people that win at Monopoly always cheat.
I don't know anybody that's won at Monopoly from being good at it.
Everybody's taking a cheeky 20 when the bank is gone to the toy.
Are you guys big Monopoly players?
You used to way back when?
That sounded like there's some deep-seater trauma related to Monopoly the way you said that then.
I was a board flipper when I was younger.
If I started losing to my...
older siblings I used to just tip the board up pieces going everywhere are you a bad loser when
it comes to board games I used to be not now do you have a personal vendetta against any board
games that one I think that was it yeah yeah I had to as soon as I started losing I had no money
left up the board went no one can play what are you most looking forward to about the rest of the
season like I think we're doing well at the moment so just seeing just the consistency and
us even getting better throughout the season what do you think had made
make this season a great one for the team.
