Welcome back to We Are Chelsea, the official podcast of Chelsea Women, brought to you in association with Skoda,
the official car partner for Chelsea women and proud supporters of women's sport.
I'm at Warbank and today we are joined by two players who bring a huge amount of experience to this Chelsea side
and I'm really looking forward to chatting to them both again.
This is We Are Chelsea with Kira Walsh and Becky Spencer.
Lovely to have you both here today.
Thank you for putting up with it.
For the listener, we have just had a saga with some burnt toast and the fire.
Aerolam went off for what felt like eons and it now smells like a burnt bakery in here.
But how are you both doing?
Yeah, I'm all right.
Are you?
Yeah, we're all right.
Recovering from the burnt house saga.
Yeah, we're all right.
It's a bit better now the sun's out and the weather's better, I think.
Yeah.
Everyone's in a better mood, aren't they?
And I think the closer you get to, like, the summer break, I think everyone starts to like,
you know, like it's new old, good vibes.
Yeah, because you guys have got a proper break this year, haven't you, as well?
Yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
Yeah, I am to be fair.
I feel like you can travel a little bit further distances
and well we won't get in trouble from Serena for doing that this year
so that's nice.
Have you got any plans?
Yeah, I'm going to New York actually for a few days.
It's going to watch the men's game against Panama.
Is that right?
Oh, that's exciting.
Yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
That's really exciting.
What about you, Becky?
You got plans?
Yeah, I think I'm going to go to our beef off,
a little four day.
Just to let loose a little bit.
What side of the island?
I used to live there, so I'm familiar.
with the four-day-er.
You know where I'm going.
She ain't going formentara, we'll say that.
Lovely beaches.
I used to be one of them really lovely people
that walks around and nags you to do the water polo.
Oh.
Yeah.
Nobody wants to see them.
You're sitting there with your bag of lays.
You don't want her coming around.
No, you don't.
No, you don't.
Honestly, God, the amount of people I've seen hide
in their own skin walking past is absolutely thrilling.
I feel like that would be soul-destroying for me, actually.
Oh, I just feel dead awkward.
I do not.
Yeah.
It gets a bit awkward like the end of season
when there's only like three or four people sat around the pool.
A bit of a dry spell, isn't it?
You're asking the same three people.
Like, do you want to come and play a dance?
But yeah, lots of lovely summer plans it sounds like.
I'm hoping you both enjoy your break.
We've heard that you guys are quite good friends.
There was a look.
Are you sure?
We are, yeah.
Did you guys know each other before you started to play for Chelsea?
Well, we've got a lot of mutual friends
and I think we've both been in women's football
for quite a while now.
So it was just like, yeah, so, yeah,
we just kind of like gravitated towards each other
like pretty quickly.
Yeah.
And obviously like our friends are all the same friends.
So yeah, it was just like a natural.
And we sit next to each other in the change room.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Do you two partaking that,
we've heard many a story about it on the podcast
about the bus yatsy games.
Yeah, that's a bit me.
Is it?
Are you into the, are you in the Yatsy circle?
it's normally me, Nat, Yo-Yo and Sam who play. So yeah, I am. We've heard great things about
how competitive everybody gets and how intense it gets. It's like, can you sum that up for our
listeners? Well, it does. I think me and Sam probably enjoy winding yo-yo up more than winning.
I think yo-yo's very intense. Nat's just like, just a lovely player. Like, she helps everyone
with the scores and what decisions to make. I would say yo-yo's definitely the most intense one, for sure.
That does come up a lot how competitive.
Would you say she's one of the more competitive on the team?
Yeah, for sure.
Yeah.
Yeah, definitely.
I mean, you lot do get a bit wound up though if you forget the game.
I mean, we didn't hear the end of it.
Yeah, but I just like to annoy them.
Yeah, you're winding up.
Yeah, you're not actually that bothered.
I'm just to wind up, to be honest.
There's always an agent of chaos in every game.
I feel like that's your role.
Yo-Yo just throw it again.
Really?
Yeah.
And then she's like, I just wanted to see, you know,
if I could get you out, see if I did one more throw.
And I'm like, that's not how the game works.
Like, you have just have three.
We're really exposing this underground, yeltsin network.
She's going to be annoyed that I basically called it.
That's going to really annoying now.
She probably won't speak to me for the rest of the week after she's seen this.
Becky, last time we had you here, you were here with Millie,
and you'd got some absolutely brilliant stories.
The one about ripping trousers when the Wonderland springs to mind.
Is there any stories between the two of you that you're happy to share?
No, there is it.
It's not appropriate for the book.
There's been NDA signed before entering this room.
Do you have any recollection of the Millie and Becky saga?
No, I don't think I was there, was I?
No, basically.
Years ago, wasn't it?
Yeah, I've heard about the story, but I think I was like a city then, so it wasn't.
I think everyone knows about that now.
Yeah.
It lives in infamy, clearly.
I've also been, I've got it here in my notes that there's been something said about
screaming on the plane.
This is news to us?
No, that's an hour.
absolute lie.
Sam is the biggest liar going.
Sam literally screams the whole flight and I was sat next to her so she was making me more
nervous but like if there's like a little thing she goes,
but like she's not joking and then obviously I am I don't love flying so that made me
a little bit nervous but I would definitely.
It's definitely Sam.
It's definitely Sam.
Sam Ker's been called out on the podcast.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
No, it ain't Keir.
Leave it on the field.
Becky, I hear congratulations in her order.
You have extended your time it Chelsea.
How does it feel to be saying?
Yeah, no, obviously it's, you know, it's like wonderful for me.
Like, I've done like a full circle and I think as I'm getting towards the end of my career,
I think staying here is probably the best place for me to be.
So, yeah, it was an easy decision in the end.
She just loves women's football there, isn't you?
She just loves women's football.
I can get rid of her.
it. Can I get rid of it? She's been trying to get rid of me all year and I'm like, I'm staying
going to. I've been trying to actually celebrate this new contract, but Becky's not having it.
It's not a celebration though, is it? I'm going to make like a massive deal of it and she's
like, you better not. I take it you're thrilled she's saying then. Yeah, like I think when,
you know, there's a bit of chaos going on, we tend to just sit back and watch and yeah.
Yeah. I think it tends to be us to adjust. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We can confide with each other a little bit
about it. We're both probably thinking the same thing, but we're not really saying it,
but we're just like, one little glance and I'm like, yeah, that's just...
Like those two Muppets that's in, do you know, is it start the Rold?
You just call us a pair of Muppets. You have no, ain't you?
I am a worshipper of the Muppets, I love the Muppets, but do you know, the two ones that
just like heckle everyone and just sit there and watch all the chaos going off, that's
very much the energy that I'm getting.
I've never seen it. I only know, like, is in the heckling?
Miss Piggy.
Is she a Muppet?
She is a Muppet, yeah.
And Kermit.
Yeah.
You're practically there.
That's most of the Muppets.
Right there.
I would say you are one of the biggest wind up merchants, I know.
Kera's got everyone literally chomping.
Oh, every day.
What's the most wound up you've ever seen somebody get over something that Kira said?
That we can share on the podcast.
I think it might be in the shooting.
Yeah, because I have.
always win. Yeah, because she always wins in the shooting and I think people's heads roll off
and then with the goalkeeper she always tries to chip us and that's like a big no-no for
goalkeepers like don't chip us but she does it. She's I nearly get you today though. She nearly
got me today. During the session she was going nearly there and I was just like yeah I'd dare you to do it
again one of these days I'm going to boot that ball later. I think that's because I just I'm not
actually bothered about winning or losing so then like when I win it's really funny because everyone
is fuming. And it's like she's not even trying either.
It's like effortless. So it's like she's not even like,
she's not like being competitive in the moment.
But she's so good, isn't she? That she's,
she wins everything. I just like to, yeah.
Just like to annoy everyone.
Gets me out of bed in the morning.
We say, we did joke about doing some mindfulness before we start
the podcast. Is that your mindfulness? Just get up and like,
I am going to wind everyone up to stay.
To be fair, she's had me on toast a few times today.
We can't share that on the podcast,
That's what she's had me on toast
for his hands today.
I'm going to be sat at home later.
You know, the meme where they're just staring into the distance,
that's because she's going to be me.
She'd had me on toast, but anyway.
Becky, we've heard from the social team
something to do with celebrity lookalikes in Portugal.
Bruno Mars.
Bruno Mars.
That's your celebrity look at?
Who said that?
I don't know what app they were using.
Hannah was loving it.
Liv was loving it.
Who was Liv?
I feel like she was like a Jonas.
I feel like somebody got Merrill Street.
That was Hannah.
Oh, she got Merrill Street.
and a Jonas brother.
What apps that?
I've got no idea.
That's what I mean.
I've just about got Instagram
so all of this.
It's all news to me this.
It's all news to me.
They were taking pictures of me
and I was just like, here we go.
I could fully imagine that Becky was just like
what are we doing?
I'm just imagining
that's not the women's football
Becky knows.
That's not what I know.
That's not the women's football
she signed up for.
I am fully just imagining
somebody from the social team
walking up to you and going,
that thinks you look like Bruno Mars.
Brunai Morse.
Do I look like Bruno?
No, you don't.
That's mental that.
No, I wouldn't say so.
Has anybody on the team got an actual celebrity lookalike, do you think?
I feel like Yo-Yo said my Lekounis once.
Oh.
Genuinely, genuinely, she said that to me,
and she's going to kill me that.
I just said that on the podcast.
She did say that her celebrity looks like a little bit of her celebrity.
Her celebrity look alike.
Your celebrity look alike.
She said her.
Her own celebrities, you lookalike is Neil Coonis, which is wild.
You normally wait for someone else to give you a nice one, don't?
You don't say it about yourself.
This is now the second time I've had you on the podcast,
and it's just descended into madness.
Well, I didn't say it.
She said it about herself, yeah, she said it about herself, so.
He's just so candid you are.
Just like, I'll chuck everybody else under the world.
This is it.
This is Gera winding everybody up in real time.
No, she's genuinely not going to speak to me now,
because I've said about Yaxi, I've said about this.
She's really not going to speak to it now.
Is there anything else you want to expose a for while you're here to go three for three?
Atrick.
No, she's actually really funny to be fair.
So I'll just leave out that.
This podcast is brought to you by Scudder, the official car partner of Chelsea Women
and proud supporters of women's sport.
Its football season is time for after work training, muddy boots and early morning weekend games.
Whether you play five aside after work,
cheer on the kids from the sidelines on a Saturday morning,
or gather with your mates to watch the big leagues every weekend.
Skoda's the perfect companion for your everyday adventures.
skip around town in your all-electric eniac
or give the squad a lift home in the seven-seater coda c-ac
there's something in the range to suit teams of all shapes and sizes
but don't just take my word for it though
search the scoda range today and jump in to see for yourself
whilst we're in the spirit of winding people up
would you like to play a game?
Sure.
We're going to do who on the team.
Yeah, yeah.
Who on the team?
So I'm going to give you a question
and you're going to tell me who on the team
you think fits that best.
So the first one is who on the team would you trust the most?
I like it.
For the people that are just listening to this,
they're going to each other.
Why?
I mean, you both seem very trustworthy,
but is there something there?
Is there a special connection?
I just feel like she just keeps self to herself.
And yeah, she wouldn't.
Not really a gossiper, are you?
Oh, they're the best kind of people.
Like, vault type of people.
You can just tell them anything.
Yeah, yeah.
I feel like you're asking.
I think we're quite similar there.
Who would you trust to plan a big trip?
Oh.
That's a good one.
See, I think one of Yo-Yo and Nat is a planner
and I can't remember which one it is.
I think it's nuts.
Is it?
I think you're right, you're right.
Shall we say not?
I think that, yeah.
I think it is not.
Good one for that.
Who would you trust to survive longest on a reality show?
What's that like?
What, like I'm a celebrity?
You're talking like Love Island or not as a celebrity?
There's a vast difference between the two.
There has been a lot of talk of the traitors
and who'd be a good traitor and who'd be a good faithful.
Would either of you do anything like that?
Nah.
Not for me.
See, I feel like if you like winding people up,
you'd be a good traitor.
I'm not a good liar, you know.
I'm not a good liar.
But if you know that you're not lying,
if you're faithful,
then do you wind everybody up that way?
Well, I think people would automatically assume I'm lying,
so.
But then I'd just get votes out and I won't win,
so there's no point in doing it, really, is there?
I feel like you'd be quite good on the traitors,
if you're quite chill and quite trustworthy.
Yeah.
I think I'd be right on, though, can't it?
You can't have bothered?
We want an old Chelsea women's season of the traitors.
Who would you trust to order food for the table?
Oh, God.
Do you know what?
I'd choose Lucy.
No.
No?
Because she's like a foodie, isn't she?
Flat out now.
Really?
She could eat anything and her stomach would be fine.
Unless she'll be ordering for everyone, right?
Yeah, but she's got some outrageous.
just like takes that I just,
I think a lot of people won't want to eat.
Yeah, you're right.
What kind of outrageous are we talking?
I don't even think it's that outrageous,
just like, seafood.
Outrageous takes, crab steaks.
Svecia.
Yeah, like, wolf.
I would trust LJ actually.
I would trust LJ.
Yeah.
She definitely eats at that restaurant.
Yeah, she does.
Who would you trust to look after your pet?
Vika.
because she's got a dog.
There's a few team dogs, isn't there?
There's a...
I meant more like pets, Kira.
There's no coming back from that, is there?
There's any team dogs?
I meant more like dogs that people have got.
They've had me on to us today.
I'm going to quit.
So they're big dogs?
I meant more like there's a couple of people
that have got dogs called them all.
The fire in the map is.
The fire alarm sent me out of whack.
I'm going to retire.
There's a few dogs on the city.
That's sent me under that.
Yeah, a few people have.
Yeah, a few people have dogs.
Dogs.
Oh, moving swiftly on from that one.
Who would you trust to navigate in a foreign country?
I'm trying to think about the dressing room here.
Maybe like...
Neve?
Yes.
She'll be good at it.
Yeah.
I think that need like...
that sort of stuff, don't she?
Yeah.
We definitely not ask that.
I mean, definitely not me.
I'd take a back seat in all of that,
just like other people.
Either way.
A bit of a passenger princess
in the holiday scenario.
Yeah.
I think that's the best way to be in it.
Leave somebody else in charge,
turn up, have nice time.
Who would you trust to tell you the truth
even if it was hard to hear?
You.
I would trust you, yeah.
There's a lot of love in the room today.
Not from me, apparently.
Who would?
Do you trust a DJ on a road trip?
Keish has got good movie.
Yeah, Keish. Ellie.
Ellie.
LJ.
Got quite a few to be better at one.
Yeah. Yeah, there's quite a few good ones.
Who do you think it'd be most likely to win on a game show?
I'm thinking about the smart ones because Neve's smart.
Yeah, Neve is smart.
Yeah, Neve again.
I feel like she'd be right up for it as well.
She should be really enthusiastic about it.
Let's get Neve on the chase. I like it.
We've asked the fans to send in some questions.
and a lot of them wanted to know what it's like when the two of you go on international duty.
Becky, what's it like going away with Jamaica?
Yeah, no, I love going away.
Like, we've got some good players and we always go to, like, nice countries
and places that we're probably never going to go again, like in a lifetime.
So I think, yeah, like I really enjoy going away.
It feels like a family when we're away, so, yeah, I enjoy every minute of it.
Kara, what are England camps like in comparison to your time at Chelsea?
Yeah, I would probably say quite similar, I think.
Obviously very structured, I think there's a lot of the same people
and yeah, there's quite a lot of girls from Chelsea there
and obviously a lot of people who play in the league and I've played with before
so quite a lot of familiar faces but yeah, sometimes it's nice like Becky said
to go to different countries, different climates, train somewhere different for a change.
St. George's Park?
I don't know.
Apart from St. George's Park.
But it was nice I went to Iceland.
example, that was nice.
We're going to New Yorker next time.
That'll be nice.
Bit of sun.
But yeah, just have a change of scenery.
We've got some whistleblower scenarios from the fans.
Are you ready to referee people's lives?
Yeah, okay, yeah.
Yeah.
The first scenario we've got is I started dating someone
who puts ketchup on everything.
And when I say everything, I mean everything.
Pasta, mac and cheese, roast dinner.
Is this a deal breaker?
I'd say yes.
Yeah, that's not for me that.
I don't like the smell of ketchup
Sometimes
No, I don't
It smells like play-dard
Yeah
It shouldn't be on everything
Should it?
No, that's gross
I don't want to yuck
Anybody's yum
But
What?
What is she said?
Yuck!
I don't want to yuck anyone's yum
I've never heard that before
I mean, no
Every day's a learning day
Yuck everyone's yum
Yeah
I think she's saying
Like she didn't want to
Like say that's disgusting
if someone else likes it.
Yeah, because like, it's not for everybody, is it?
But it is for somebody.
I've never heard that before.
You know?
No.
Do you know what you'll use it?
You're going to use it?
No.
I'm officially resigning for my job today.
It's the smell of toast.
Nobody knows whether we're actually a fire alarm or whether we're all on a stroke.
So no to catch up then.
I think that's a deal with.
I do like it sometimes like with a burger and chips and stuff.
Not on everything.
There's got to be an occasion for it.
And I don't feel.
I think a roast in a day.
No, not on your roast.
No, that just feels
slightly offensive
to a Northerner as well.
Second scenario,
my friend is starting to send
really long voice notes.
Don't get me wrong,
I love a voice note,
but these are like 10 minutes long.
I put them on double speed,
but it still feels really long.
Help.
It's not for me that.
Anything over 60 seconds is a podcast.
I just,
I'm not a lover of voice notes,
to be honest.
I'd rather a phone call.
I like one because it's like
halfway in between a text
and a phone call.
I don't have to type,
but I also don't have to be like, yeah, that's nice.
But yeah, anything over a minute.
Yeah, that's not a voice now.
I feel like I'm a bit old school with that, just text or call.
Yeah.
I look at my phone then when somebody's ringing and I'm like, I'm not going to put it up.
An answer in it.
Anxiety?
No.
Oh, right, just don't want to.
Fair enough.
I understand the anxiety bit because I never used to like ringing the dentist, sorry.
Yeah.
Why is that just the most universal experience?
Why does nobody like ringing the doctors?
Everybody's mum.
Yeah, I'd still get moments to it now.
but you know I only can't get my mum to do it now because I don't live with her anymore
but do you know when you just see that somebody's ringing me like can't be asked with that
I don't really yeah okay I do do do that you definitely do that I do do do it I definitely
do it yeah yeah a 10 minute voice note is very long now yeah excessive I don't even watch
YouTube that's like a series yeah I don't if it's longer than a TikTok video I'm not
I just switched off short like for sure I would be listening you're not getting the necessary
information. Send me a bullet point list.
Send me a flash card. I don't need that long.
No, I agree with that.
What are you both looking forward to most over the summer then?
Obviously, we've got your trips to New York and be there.
You're looking forward to spending more time with family friends, things like that.
Yeah, I think just like having a chance to just switch off, and I like to switch off completely
from football and literally not speak to anyone from football for six weeks.
Out of office.
Out of office, that's it. Enjoy time and family.
because obviously we're, you know, we come back in, don't we?
So I think having that time away is quite nice.
She won't even speak to me either, so it's not a lot of things.
The whole team.
What else are you looking forward to?
Yeah, I think same as Becky like football is obviously very intense sometimes.
So I think just to have time to, like, decompress and not think about it
and actually try and explore other things you might enjoy doing other than playing football, I think is, yeah.
I was going to ask you both if you hang out.
together over the summer but by the sounds of it
I might see her in a
Bechie's on off I might see him in
Abitha. We have spoken about it
haven't we? I said if the dates
match up then of course
this is why Becky's changing the dates when she
tries out on your time.
Kea's coming this date.
Well thank you both for joining us today
for this very short and sweet
brief episode
thank you for also
bring me to the verge of tears
I don't ask us. Come on again, I have.
I've done you a favour right out of yet.
Coming on again.
And I hope you both have a lovely summer.
Thank you.
Thank you.
