Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome back to We Are Chelsea, the official podcast of Chelsea Women, brought to you in association with Skoda, the official car partner for Chelsea women and proud supporters of women's sport. I'm in Warbank, and today we are joined by one of the brightest stars in the game, Alyssa Thompson, who arrived at Chelsea last month and who better to help her settle in than her US women's national teammate, Naomi Gamer? I cannot wait to get to know them better. This is We Are Chelsea with Naomi Gamer and Alyssa Thompson.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Hello, thank you so much for joining us today. excited to have your birth. How are you doing? How's training been? Great. It's been good. Alyssa, you only arrived at Chelsea last month. How are you getting on? Are you settling in all right? Yeah. I think it's been nice, obviously, having Nang Kat here, being able to just ask some questions if I need anything. Yeah, but the team has been really nice and I've been happy to be here. Amazing. How's assimilating to London life? Actually, I was scared about the weather, but it's been so nice since I've been here so I'm like you've been lulled into a false sense of security that's what everyone says and I'm like the weather actually has been really nice the grey's going to set in any
Starting point is 00:01:08 time soon I'm really nervous for that why would you say that we've got really lucky we're having quite a sunny autumn so far but oh wait till that rain kicks in you made your debut a few weeks ago against villa how how that feel yeah it was really exciting I didn't really know if I was going to be able to play because of my hand injury. So when I got there, the ref was like, yeah, you can play. So I was like, okay, I'm ready, I guess. But I was pretty nervous, but I think getting on the field being able to play with the girls and them all believing me, I felt was really nice. So just, yeah, it was fun. How has it been settling in with the rest of the team? Yeah, it's been good. I feel like I carpool with some of the girls to training, so that's been nice. And everyone's been
Starting point is 00:01:55 super chill and I was really scared coming in because I just didn't know and I feel like Europe is scary for people coming from America. So like being able to come to this team and like just see how everyone's super chill and really nice is really helpful. Yeah and it must be quite a big thing because you're so young. I feel like your nans actually. I feel like your grandma. That's absolutely insane to make that adjustment from obviously you play with the US national team over there and then coming here, playing for a whole new league with a whole new team. What's been the biggest adjustment you've found moving from the US to London? I feel like just like in trainings, I just always have to be switched on. Like I think going to any new club, you want to like be your best self, like
Starting point is 00:02:44 prove yourself not just to like the people around you, but to you that you made the right decision and you're here for a reason. Like I have to be like really focused and before I felt like I didn't have to do as much. And now it's like, oh, it's it, oh, I have to turn my brain on today. I've very, veryly turned my brain on so I can. Naomi, you've obviously had to make a very similar jump. What did you find to get used to coming from the US? I think similar things to List, just like being in a new club, new training environment,
Starting point is 00:03:18 a new team, new staff. You just have to adjust and settle in. And I think Liz has done a really good job of just like getting to know people. And I feel like the quicker you do that, the easier it is. So yeah, I think like knowing how List feels coming in, like a few of us have been able to help her with that, which has been good. And she's been crushing it. So she doesn't need much help, honestly. It must be really nice having someone that's been in the same boat to sort of like guide you through it.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Has there been any like major culture shocks coming from the U.S. to the UK? I mean, I came in January. So the weather was a culture shock. It was pretty dark when I got here. I mean, it's pretty, like, I think a lot of things are pretty similar. I mean, I feel like the obvious one is driving for us. Yeah. Oh, the driving up on the side of the road.
Starting point is 00:04:08 I haven't started yet, but I want to just start driving because I love driving. But I'm, it's definitely going to be weird in the beginning. Yeah, I think that was a bit of like a shock in the first couple days where I was like, Oh, like, I'm not feeling confident. But now I'm good, I think. Yeah, I'll do. You love driving until you have to go down the M25 and then it'll make you want to sell your car.
Starting point is 00:04:34 Would you sell? It's one of the worst motorways in the UK. We don't take that one. We won't have to take that. It's absolutely horrendous is what it is. It's a motorway and it's just where dreams go to die. It really is. Naomi, being in the same position, less than the year,
Starting point is 00:04:49 ago. Did you have any advice for Alyssa? I think I was just like, this is where you should live. Yeah. I was like, I looked at a lot of apartments in a lot of areas. Like, I think you should try these areas. I feel like anyone who comes to Chelsea, I could help them find their apartment based on what they want and need because I looked at in all areas. You could be in the state agent, yes.
Starting point is 00:05:12 Yeah, I could be, like for Chelsea, just this area. But yeah, I think that was like the biggest. thing because I know like when you move you want to get settled in as fast as you can and I think when you feel settled off to field it's easier to feel good on the field and coming into training and stuff so yeah I think that was like my biggest thing but yeah I like I knew this would be fine like coming into the team and meeting people like she's done it with a national team like I think you get used to being a little bit uncomfortable in those environments and I think it makes it easier as time goes on did you have any London advice like did you did you
Starting point is 00:05:49 you come through with the food recommendations how did you sort of help her get you sick because the tubes blow my mind i've lived here since april and i'm like what the hell is going on most of the time we both uber a lot right you're just talking about that um no i'm not the one to go to for tube advice but i do have good restaurant recommendations with you being new to the team um we thought that we'd get some fan submission questions for you both because obviously you've not been with us for a massively long time and you're very new to the team on this so are you up for some fan questions yeah sure amazing you get the fans up yeah she said fun what is your i mean they are fun they're as fun as you want them to be i can i can make them more scary if you
Starting point is 00:06:43 want no no it's fine you go for it keep it like um what's your favorite english saying um Do you have one? No, well, I just like how they say things in general. Like, they add, like, an extra word to, like, every sentence. I like, yeah. I like, oh, that's not a bit of me. That's not a bit of me. That's not a bit of me.
Starting point is 00:07:09 It feels like Love Island. The best place you can pick up English sayings is Love Island. What's the other ones that muggy? We love a bit of muggy. That's not a muggy. I don't really hear people. say that though in like day to day. Do you know? No. But I did see I did see that on Love Island. If you two could swap brains with one teammate for a day, who would it be?
Starting point is 00:07:30 Brains. Ellie. I was going to say her too because she's just like. She's all. Yeah. I love it. Is that a chaotic brain to be in or is that quite a focus brain? And she's just so fun. Like I just want to like it's like fun. It's chaotic. It's like energy. Like I feel like it was just like I would want to know what's going through her brain. Yeah. Like, like, what like causes her to just like do that randomly yeah like to like randomly do stuff you want to see the thought process yeah yeah that's a good one when you were joining chelsea who were you most excited to play with and who were you most excited to play against oh like on our team and training these are some good fan questions well done against on our team maybe against in the league
Starting point is 00:08:12 oh god yeah um well when i was coming i was excited to play with nay obviously because we play on the US team together and now we get a play at club and I've never played with you at club I know it's fun yeah um I don't know who I was excited I don't I think I don't I don't um okay play with well this wasn't here when I was joining so like cat obviously and then I think like Millie Nat yo yo um just like a lot of the back line like I think I was excited to play with them. And then play against, I'll say, I'll just say on our team in training. Like, I think like Myra, LJ, like just like a lot of really good forwards who I'd played against internationally.
Starting point is 00:09:02 But I've never played against like on a day-to-day basis in training. So I was excited to go against them. That must be quite exciting coming from going on a national team. Yeah. So like training together. Yeah. We're on the team now. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:14 I can, that really good thing you can do. I can use that against other people. Yeah. I really like that, devious thinking. Alyssa, I've seen one of your TikToks recently of you and the girls having a little boogie in the kitchen. How did that come about? Like, how did you manage to talk all the girls into doing that?
Starting point is 00:09:33 Well, we were playing a game that Lucy and Nat made. And one of the, like, things that you landed on was make a TikTok, and I wanted that one before the game even started. You are a bit of a TikTok queen, aren't you? It's really perfect. Yeah, I was like, let me get that one. So I landed on it. And then I was just trying to find one that we could all make together.
Starting point is 00:09:56 And that's when we came up with. It's a good way to bond is making TikToks. I love a TikTok, so. You are a TikTok queen. Yeah. This next question is really quite interesting. The fan questions are popping off. I'm such a, well done.
Starting point is 00:10:13 What's been your favorite moment in your football career so far? oh i'll just give one for club and one international for club it was the f a cup final this in 2025 um i think like we've played at wembley with the u.s but playing there for club and having people cheering actually cheering for us was really cool and this like i mean i just love playing there and to win the fay cup was awesome and then internationally would be be winning the gold medal last year. What good highlight to have in your career. I've not won the medal for anything.
Starting point is 00:10:54 This is my two favorite ones for sure. What about you, Lisa? It was probably scoring my first professional goal because it just felt like a full circle moment for me. And I was able to play in front of my hometown and my friends and family. So it was really, really cool. And I was really, like, happy. And here I am.
Starting point is 00:11:15 I got a vegan Greg steak bake. week, and I think that's the highlight of my week. Who were your idols growing up? Well, my idols were, like, Alex Morgan, obviously. Like, she was, I feel like a lot of people's idol growing up, and also Kristen Press. Being able to also play on a team with her, too, was really fun. So, like, and playing with Alex, like, on the national team was so cool. So being able to look up to them and also play with them was probably, like, a dream come true.
Starting point is 00:11:47 That's massive. Yeah. What about you know? I would say, I think Becky Sauerbrun was one. It's just a good defender. Julie Ertz, like Alex, not a forward, but still just like, I feel like those, they were like the icons of the national team when we were younger and seeing them do so well and win so much was really cool.
Starting point is 00:12:09 That is cool. It must be really gratifying as a player to come up with the people that you looked up to. and be like, we now play alongside each other and you're a big part of like forming the next inspiration for the next generation of women's footballers if the two of you swapped positions for a training session
Starting point is 00:12:29 who do you think could survive longer? Definitely no. I think it can be a winger. I can't head that ball. I'm not getting up there. I mean if it's like a winger and it's like up and down, up and that. That would be rough, but like the wingback, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:51 Oh, this is a really hard-hitting piece of journalism, really hard-hitting piece of journalism from the UK public. Have you tried Nando's yet? Yes. Yeah. What did you think? I love Nando's. What's you go too spicy?
Starting point is 00:13:05 What's the level of spice that you're going at? What are the options? It goes from like lemon and herb to mild to media. Why can I reel off the whole? she's like it's something like yeah yeah yeah it's something like you know if i had to guess expose yourself as anandos fan without exposing yourself as anandos fan how spicy we go in i think i get hot or like spicy whatever like the hot spicy is that is that one of the options well you can get hot you can get extra hot sometimes they have like a flavored hot yeah
Starting point is 00:13:40 what why you'll i say i get medium yeah oh playing it safe i like it i like it Have you ever, do you think, we were having this discussion with one of my friends the week. I'm, do, if you're on a date, does the level of spice that the other person orders change your perception of us? Great. Yeah, so, right. You not all going on a date at Mambos. That's obviously a very English thing. Is that like a date smart? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:09 Have you not taken a date to Nandoz? It's like first day, I'm not going crazy, am I? Like, we go on. first date to Nandoz. What? Have you been on a date to Nando's? Okay. I've been on my... You should make a poll. Is that a date spot? Yes. Here's the poll. Do you go on dates at Nando's? Yes or no.
Starting point is 00:14:32 Please make me feel like less of an idiot. Because I've been in several. No, I mean, we wouldn't know. It could be normal. I didn't know that we didn't know that was a date spot. Yeah. But obviously, Nando's is like prime romance spot. Yeah. I wasn't getting the vibe.
Starting point is 00:14:48 There's just something about the refillable drinks, something about picking from the chili scale, something about pictures of roosters everywhere. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's just really romantic. Totally. So if you were going to go on a date at Nandas, would house bite. Okay.
Starting point is 00:15:06 You're at the day at. Right, so you're sitting down at the day. You're sitting down at the day. Let's get past question in your life decisions as to why you're on a day at Nandos. Okay, you're at the day. What's the question you're like that? First step, say yes to the day and nothing. Second step, is that person's choice in spiciness going to be something that you judge?
Starting point is 00:15:37 Are you judging how hot they're going? Low key. I don't feel like that's low key. I feel like I'd be hardcore judging. I thought you were going to say like, Are you going down in spice, but I probably would be, if they go out like not spicy, I'd be like, oh, do you not like spice? Yeah, because I really like spicy food. Can you not handle the spice?
Starting point is 00:15:57 Yeah. I really like how polarizing the Nandoz question was. Moving on from Nandoz, Alyssa, what's it like being at Chelsea with your teammates from the national team in the US? It's really nice, honestly. I feel like coming here with them here also, I feel like I feel like I can. could be more myself. I feel like more comfortable on and off the field. And if I need anything, I can ask cat or nay for anything. So, okay. It's been really nice and not. Oh my gosh. Cat and nay are just the other way. K and that. I like it. It's like the brandalino
Starting point is 00:16:40 of Chelsea Women's. Let's put two and two together. Yeah, okay. Kat and Ney, like, if I need anything, like, I could just ask them. That can be your couple's name when you're going to get to Nambles. Which one, K or not? Cat doesn't like spicy breakfast. Hard judging.
Starting point is 00:16:59 She's going for lemon and her. Now, Nate, you recently referred to Alyssa as your sis. What's it been like having another sis on the squad? It's so fun. I feel like it's like having a little sis. It's so cute. But, I mean, I think, like I said before, she's doing so well and like yes we're here if she needs us but like she's been like I feel like
Starting point is 00:17:21 you've just been like thriving which has been great and um for me personally it's so fun to just have like another friend and someone who I'm close to and like it's fun and like I feel like we have similar humor so it's been really fun that's so nice because Alyssa you played at Angel City with your actual sister as well um was it I'm sure that was really hard leaving her to come here Do you speak to her a lot? How's that been, how's that transition been? Yeah, we actually speak more than we used to, like, over the phone. Because when we were home, like, we were in the same space, but we wouldn't talk to each other.
Starting point is 00:17:57 So we were just, like, in our rooms and, like, relaxing. But now, like, I go out of my way to, like, call her and just see what's going on. And we text a lot. And I do miss her a lot because we would, like, go to training every day, come back together. So it's just, it's different. But I feel like it's good for both. of us but yeah I do miss her but we talk more what's it like playing with your sister because no disrespect to my sisters that definitely won't be watching this because they don't watch anything I do
Starting point is 00:18:23 but like if I had to work with my sisters and like we'd kill each other how is that for you guys like what's your relationship like on and off on and off the page um we have the best time together we're always laughing like any we go to camp sometimes together too and we're just always together they are they're like always laughing together at the corner like we really love each other's company like um we're pretty similar in how we are so just like being able to go through the same experiences with someone that knows you so well and yeah it's just like my best friend so it's really nice oh that's so nice my sister's just steal my clothes and then gaslight me into thinking they haven't done it. And you guys are like, oh, woo, let's go play international football together.
Starting point is 00:19:14 Yeah. That's crazy. Absolutely mad. You made the move to the league at 20. That's insane. What excited you the most about that challenge? I mean, I think it's just coming to an amazing club like Chelsea, like getting that like offer was just something I would have never thought would come so soon. And I didn't want to pass up on the opportunity being able to play at one of the best clubs in the world was something that I've always wanted to do. I've always wanted to go to Europe. But now being able to actually have the opportunity, I didn't want to pass it up. So being able to be here right now is just like crazy to me still. Now you've made a similar move and you've been here since January. What differences have you noticed between the leagues?
Starting point is 00:20:00 That's a good question. I think in the UK just having like a bit more of like different styles. of games like throughout like in the league I guess is different and I think that means sometimes for different teams you have to prepare different game plans and like sometimes a team especially against like a club like Chelsea will sit in or they'll high press or I don't know I think the tactics change a lot so I feel like that's been different in like the preparation for each game but yeah I think both leagues are really competitive like both really hard to play in and both developed players really well. It just kind of depends on what you're looking for at the time. And like, Lists said, I think we both felt like this was a good time for us to be here.
Starting point is 00:20:48 This podcast is brought to you by Scuder, the official car partner of Chelsea Women and proud supporter of women's sport. It's football season. Starting point is 00:21:22 Now speaking of games, we have prepared a little game for you. We're going to play US versus UK. Who does it best? I'm going to give you a category. I'm going to give you a category. I feel really outnumbered me There's two of them and one of me I'm going to give you a category and you're going to tell me who does it best Okay Right who do you think does music best
Starting point is 00:21:43 US Yeah US Have you got any particular favourite artists From the US Oh Beyonce As you should Yeah I feel like she's just ruined The entire of the UK charts
Starting point is 00:21:55 With that one answer Nice You know the Slade The House Down boots quite literally reality TV both have really good shows though what are you watching at the minute or what have you been watching reality TV wise
Starting point is 00:22:12 I don't have one right now yeah I mean love is blind they have UK and US yeah I think the US love is blind is better yeah I agree it's a little more messy I think I agree I would agree because I feel like UK is actually they're in it for love US has been good recently but I feel like UK is better it's yeah we've produced some final
Starting point is 00:22:32 have better love island for sure i regularly quote does anybody want me to rap to lighten the mood chris hughes big up i don't know that one oh if you don't know get to know it was i think it must have been like 2016 2017 who's you probably couldn't watch it then yeah she might have been too I don't know what you were doing in 2016. Thanks, Ney. Yeah. 2016, how old will you have been? Um, 12.
Starting point is 00:23:05 Oh my God, fetus. Maybe it wasn't a lot to watch then. Who does food better? UK or US? I think American food versus British food, American food. Controversial. Yeah. Because even the spots of the places I haven't gone to like a British.
Starting point is 00:23:26 like Sunday roast is pretty good yeah um but like that's the only have you tried a yorkshire pudding no oh see that's where I feel like if you knew what you're if you had a yorkshire pudding yeah we explain it right so it's
Starting point is 00:23:41 it's kind of like a pop do you like a popover situation for right I'm gonna have to deep this now it's like it's pancake butter but like not pancake butter okay and it's like it's kind of fluffy right Yeah, I'm really racking my brain on that.
Starting point is 00:23:58 I've never been asked to describe the Yorkshire pudding before. And as a Yorkshire woman, I feel like I have to take this very seriously. Yeah. This is like... Are you from Yorkshire? I am from Yorkshire. Yeah. Nice.
Starting point is 00:24:09 Yorkshire tea. Yorkshire tea. Big up Yorkshire tea. If all the tea bags you could have named in that moment, that was the best one well too. You've passed the test. I do have it at home. As you should. It's the only acceptable tea bag.
Starting point is 00:24:25 A Yorkshire bag. pudding it's kind of it's kind of like do you know when you go to an indian and you get a popadom it's kind of like our equivalent to a popadom it's the way i'd explain it we'll go we'll go it's like it's kind of like a pie crust situation but not a pie crust it's good that's all you need to know me and i will give it a yeah we'll try and when you do we'll circle back on this one yeah you're going to have to come back to the pod to tell me what you think for my third time to tell, we're just going to do a whole episode on Naomi breaking down, your auction puddings feel all.
Starting point is 00:25:01 Yeah. We'll get you to try them in different places and you can rate them. Okay. I'll get on that. A whole day out. Who do you think does humor better the UK or the US? This is a real deep question. I feel like this could start wars.
Starting point is 00:25:15 Yeah, it could. I mean, I think British humor is funny. I think what makes it funny is their accent. Two. The accent does make it funny. It makes it so much funnier. It's a lot more dry. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:30 I feel like British humor is a lot more self. Deprecating. Yes, that is the word I was looking for. Yeah, I agree. I'm finishing each other sentences and run away for them. I agree. Whereas I think US, I don't know how I describe the US human. I don't know either.
Starting point is 00:25:46 Yeah, it's kind of all over the place. Because in my head all I can think of is American pie. And that's a terrifying thought to be having at this time in a day. pure peak american cinema i don't think either was i watched that you've not seen no that's like have you seen it no what's you like go-to comedy film white chicks yeah i feel like rush hour is funny oh yeah that's another one i quote quite often the for the lady perhaps a salad perhaps no yeah yeah that's a good one's absolutely i know that quote Oh, controversial.
Starting point is 00:26:30 UK or US football? US, come on. But are you talking soccer or are you talking football? Oh, I'm talking soccer. Oh, so the US football over, like American football versus like soccer. There's a whole like web of debates going on. Yeah, UK football. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:55 Are you saying that for this? sanctity of your jobs. No, like, I feel like we both like, like soccer more than football. We do do a game on the podcast now. It's a new game that I thought be fun to play. It's called whistleblowers. We're going to give you the chance to be the referee in people's lives. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:27:18 We've had fan submissions. Wait, I like this. Wait, oh, what do you mean? She sat, she's seated. We've had some fan submissions of things. fans of missions of scenarios that are going on in their lives that they need advice on. Oh, they need advice? I thought we're just going to blow the whistle. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:27:33 You can play the metaphorical whistle. You really can. You can tell these, you can tell these people. Red flag. Yeah. Oh, yeah, but okay, I'm down. I'm down. We can give some red cards out. Okay. That'd be fun. Show, our first scenario is I've been offered a promotion, but it would mean managing a friend who's been at the company way longer than me. I think I'll feel really awkward, but I really want the job. What do I do? Get the promotion. Yeah, just have a talk with your friend, you know. Get your bad girl.
Starting point is 00:27:59 Yeah. There we go. No red cards needed. Nope. No. Red card if the friend kicks off there. Yeah. Because if you should do a job.
Starting point is 00:28:08 And yellow card if you don't have a conversation first. There we go. The cards have been. Yellow card is. The cards have been assigned. Okay, final scenario. I know my friend might get proposed to on holiday. Oh, go for her.
Starting point is 00:28:25 But she's mentioned she's not keen on getting engaged. Should I give her a heads up or should I stay out of it? Yikes. I don't know. I feel like maybe you'd give a heads up so then they could have a conversation about it, like the couple. Yeah, I was going to say if she said that she doesn't want to, then I would be like.
Starting point is 00:28:43 Or maybe she just get proposed to and she says no. No, but that's so. It's 2025. I feel like you should know if your partner wants to be proposed to or not. Yeah, like I feel like that should have been a conversation. Yellow card. for them honestly yeah like they should have already talked about or i would tell the like the husband i don't know if she wants to or be interesting angle maybe you should talk to her first yeah yeah wait have you guys

Now obviously you've been here since January so you've just joined. Have either of you done your team initiative? yet? I have. I have it. I don't know what that is. Oh, interesting. What did you do for your team initiation? I sang a song. Was there, was there full choreo? Did we go full Beyonce on it? Was it a full
Starting point is 00:30:10 performance? Um, yeah, me and Ellie sang a song together and we had a bit of choreo. I love it. I'm here for it. Yeah. What are you going to do for your team initiation? Have you thought about it yet? Do I have to pick it? No, she has some time. Is this how she finds out that it was just a bit? Is this how she finds out that was, She's getting initiated under the team. I don't know. I don't know how, like I didn't, I did mine in, in preseason camp, even though I came in January. So I'm sure we'll find a time for it. Did people do like other things or is it just saying?

Are you locked in with a pair of headphones? What's, talked me through the process? I don't like to be hungry while I'm shopping. Yeah. So I normally like to eat before. Eat before and I don't like anything in my hands too because the bags are in my hands. Yeah. But I do always end up having like an ice latte with me from my meal before. You need to be fueled.
