Starting point is 00:00:00 VIII. And so. I'm Whoa, everybody. on-on-on-on-on-on-on-on, what is going on-screen live for the show's date of Monday, March the 24th, which means March is, like, over with pretty much, which is crazy. I hope you all had a good weekend. Hope nobody lost their shirt in the NCAA tournament this weekend. I saw a thing today that said there was something like 20 unbusted brackets left on ESPN's website.
Starting point is 00:00:59 Are you one of the 20 who hasn't busted yet? That's gross. I have not been following the journey I have not fill out a bracket any of the next three guys did him in we got a lot to talk about today first up you know him you love him he is known to watch professional basketball Mr. Steven Sadek
Starting point is 00:01:17 you never got into the college basketball thing you know it's great for other parts of the country but in New York we have professional real basketball so that's totally fine oh you're getting death threats now dude I love to get death threats Listen, I just don't follow it. I can't tell you. I don't tell you know. I did the most pretentious thing I've ever done in my entire life on Friday night. Wow, that's saying something. What was that?
Starting point is 00:01:47 Cut a good, what do you call it there? Caught a good retro of bringing out the dead at the Roxy Theater. There's a cigar bar right near there that I like to go to. Yep. I've been reading Kafka's The Trial. So I went into the cigar bar. they were playing March madness. So I was able to sit in the corner. I was able to smoke a cigar. because the only madness I was excited about was the excesses of the state. That's the madness that I was worried about. Absolutely. Dude, a lot of state excesses to get worried about these days. That's for sure. Up next, mustache game's still on point. You know him. You love him. Mr. Eric Siskin. Hello, my God. College basketball? I mean, I hope you people are carding. these kids before you bust.
Starting point is 00:02:33 It's crazy, man. Yeah, yeah, like, like, yeah, like, like, like, like, like, completely out the window, which is always fucking funny. It is. Yeah, you know what I mean. Actually, I think I saw on the ESPN, there's only one left. It's it down to one already? Yeah, they had, like, the
Starting point is 00:02:53 Doctor Strange GIF of, like, the one in one, you know what I mean? Oh, wow, okay. Yeah, so that's pretty bad. Yeah, totally. Well, it's just It's almost as if gambling is It's almost as if gambling is set up You're not win I'm here what my neighborhood bartender
Starting point is 00:03:11 Has lost so far Because that dude, I love him He's a degenerate gambler Speaking of degenerates, you know him You love him, Mr. Christopher Cabin. I'm glad that we stuck to degenerates Because I am noted that I just don't gamble I don't get this thing
Starting point is 00:03:25 I don't have the bug I am happy to say But I also have to say I am a little discouraged to badmouthed so much. It has brought such joy to this wonderful program. Yeah, I just, I mean, I'm like you, dude, like I don't get anything from it. Like when we were in Vegas back in October, I played a couple of slot machines. I have too much like an imposter syndrome and like fear that I'm going to like fuck up at a table and a Texan and a big cowboy hat is going to shoot me in the head. I find it's so boring. I cannot imagine. I'm like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, I'm like, like, I'm, like, oh, oh, oh, I don't know if I took a hundred dollars and put it on, on a bet, then I'd be like, okay, now I'm a little, my heart's erasing. But that's like, if I put $100 on shoes, I would be doing that. I'm like, yeah. Oh, I don't know if I really like them that much. Oh, I mean, precisely. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:04:24 I enjoy real life, real life gambling. Like, what I went to Vegas for my brother's bachelor party had, I had fun gambling and, I had fun gambling. I didn't get out of the vices it's like one of the vices that I don't have an addiction which is totally fine that I can sort of take or leave which is a rarity for me. Part of me wonders that that's the other thing dude is like part of me knows me and knows how I love
Starting point is 00:04:46 to live and like I feel like that's a slippery slope if I also all of a sudden got really into gambling the gambling I like is going really fast down a country road late at night you know a lot of turns coming up and I'm I'm just turn it's turning the lights on and off the lights and seeing seeing the lights on seeing the light on seeing the light on seeing the light on seeing the light on seeing if they work seeing how it looks at night with nothing on it then you know the the deer and the farmers come at your car really fast when you don't have the lights on suddenly to there
Starting point is 00:05:17 even more so Eric I would say the other cars the other cars were out there well they usually have the lights on too so I can just avoid those but you might be swervingly you don't see the lines anymore when you got the light yeah of course so you know, more dangerous than the farmers. Oh, yep. This is the kind of gambling I like to do stuff related to just movie trivia. Let's do some top of the box office here for no money whatsoever. Here we go. 2005, this was a sequel to a hit movie that was trying to tell you that one of the biggest actresses of the 90s is just an ugly, ugly nothing. sequel sequel uh uh... uh... uh... good guess steve it is is fabulous
Starting point is 00:06:06 because we love these movies was like Sandra Bullock's fucking ugly is that what it is she's like a make it's like a makeover deal well she's like an FBI agent who has to undercover in a page and some reason always too rigid like that's what I like that she's a little too much of uh
Starting point is 00:06:23 but she doesn't put the makeup on I guess. I'm not wearing this. I mean, like this is, she's done up here. But you see the boot she's got on there. That means that like she's a little rough around the edges. That that shoe thing sold like 25 tickets. Absolutely. The weirdest guys. Absolutely. The real creeps came out. Here we go. Top of the box office this day. In 1999, this is a movie that we have said a thousand times as a definite state tune. It's a Nick Cage movie that we have quoted, repeatedly with one word one word with one word with one word with one word with one word with one word you said oh nine oh oh oh uh cage stay tuned it's a gross one city of angels no it is eight million machine machine yes of course oh we got it do that one. Dude, dude, it's like, I can't believe we can't believe it's a movie on the show that is a movie about the world of snuff filmmaking. We love, we love those. And there's also nothing better than James Gandalfini filating that gun. Yep. Yep. Yep. It's so great. And then isn't he like burned alive on a pile of pornography? I believe so. That's how I want to go to. You're on your way. I'm just, the way you're living, you're on your way. fill the car
Starting point is 00:07:55 I'm speeding down late at night, pornography. There you go. takes over. What is the crow kill you? Tragic pornography mobile explodes into flames on country road. There ain't no coming back. There ain't no coming back.
Starting point is 00:08:15 Pornography, fire fire, my new favorite holiday. Top of the box office is this day in 2011. It's a movie that stars Bradley Cooper and an Oscar winner, later in the program. 2011 was this is it Silver Ladens playbook? Oh no limitless.
Starting point is 00:08:39 Oh, of course, because... I had no idea De Niro was in that. And he's actually... He's also in Silver Lydon's Playbook, so there you go. You're right. No, I only watch movies with two De Niro's, though. Okay. I didn't see.
Starting point is 00:08:52 limitless. It's like, you know, you know, you're like, you're like, when you're like, when you're like, when you have the two guns code, when you lose it, you just got the one gun. It's not quite as fun anymore. Sucks. You can't go back. Can't go back to the one gun. Can't go back to the one to Niro. Finally, in 2023, top of the box office, it's an excellent movie that I'm pretty sure Steve still has not seen. 20 what? 23. So I've not said, that I've not, excellent action movie. Oh, yeah. It's it's it's yeah. I'm not. It's too long time. And I want to watch it. I like those John Wick movies. I don't love them obviously. That's the one to love though. That is. Yeah. It is good. It's better than those other sequels in my opinion. Yeah. It'd be it'd be a fun watch for you, Steve. But anyway, that is top of the box off. office. I was glad that we kind of took a few weeks off here because I realized that's probably I can't really do week to week because so much of it is like, well, it was the same on this week. You know, not a lot of turnover. So we'll see. But anyway, a lot to get to today, the box office
Starting point is 00:10:06 in present day, not doing so hot. Let's take a look. This is highest gross. I'll say the thing. for the thing is there's only one movie that is still in the top five at the that was there when we were last on the air doing highest gross. But that's not a good thing. It's in third place for a really paltry amount of money. But we'll get into number five. First up, I don't think any of us have seen this because none of us have talked about
Starting point is 00:10:46 in the group thread yet. but nova came the jack quaid speaking of jac rippos i have seen it's if you like if the only thing you're looking for is the like if you just want payoff stuff then it does have quite a lot of violence i will say that violence the payoff is mostly there but like as a movie it's it's garbage do you see any brains do chunks of brains i like when they a little bit movies do blood all the time but when you see a movie there's actually, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, but, like, but, uh, like, but, uh, it, it, it, it, it, I think it is there, Eric. On the heels of companion, does this, uh, bolster your opinion that Jack Quaid should be in movies or otherwise? Because I like, I, I like companion and I like, I, I very much am, like,
Starting point is 00:11:36 pro Jack Quaid in that movie. Me too. I mean, they're giving him, this is like, they're giving you the two sides of it, right? Like, this is him as the actual, like, nice, guy, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, he's nice guy. He's a secret. Complete prick. Uh, I, I mean, I would like to see him in the hands of like, uh, a, uh, maybe, you know, not to be mean or anything, but like, a more serious director maybe. I mean, that's, that's fair. With a better script at hand, uh, I, I would like to see what that was be like with him. This just feels like, like, like, yeah, what you would do if you had a hit TV show and you are also
Starting point is 00:12:15 uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, you're, uh, you're, uh, you're also , uh, uh, cause you can't commit to anything too big. Yeah, exactly. That's just like where he's at in his career right now. So I understand that and like, you know, get paid and like, I'm sure like, people are, people are clearly seeing this movie. It's in the top five at least. And it probably did not. I saw it did not cost much. I'll tell you that much. Uh, yeah, it certainly looks it. Uh, it was an 18 million dollar budget. It's done 21 million globally. And, and, and, I mean, it's going to, it's going to be whatever, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, then you know,
Starting point is 00:12:51 money. So this beat. This is, it's not, this is a second week it's been out, right? Yeah. And it's beat Altonites already, right? Altonites. What is Altonites. Dude, Altonites have placed six, uh, at the wow. It's amazing. I mean, we're not going to talk about Altonites more later, but it's incredible that Barry Levinson cannot secure the same old people. Like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, he would think at this point, he would have some kind of sway like that. I think his audience just, you know, in 2020, they went, they just checked out, you know. That's possible. Well, I think also for Levinson, like, he's not, I mean, he's a name, of course, but he's a working man director. He kind of just comes in, you, you know, you know, you know when Clint Eastwood's got movies out. You don't necessarily know Levinson. I guess that audience isn't really. I was going to say hey, how about a commercial? Maybe one commercial, that's, but yeah. Or Warner Brothers rather did not do anything, which, you know, honestly, Warner Brothers pretty slick track record for not doing anything for their older directors. I never even saw a trailer for Alto Nights, but I went to see the movie. Yeah, yeah. Well, you know, I think we kind of went to it for work purposes. I don't think I was like looking forward to it.
Starting point is 00:14:07 But, Chris, Chris, you're your point about Jack Quaid working with the case, maybe it's in it for Mickey 17 in week three now. And I still have not seen this guy. We're looking at $3.9 million. You know, this one, it kind of, I mean, this is like it's director Bong when he's working with major studios, man. This is 40 million domestic 96 global. It was a budget of $118 million plus $80 million in advertising. Like, the movie's not going to make this up for water. No way.
Starting point is 00:14:37 A fun movie I'm like, that's kind of where I don't know about you, Chris. I haven't seen it's, I was, I was between that and black bag yesterday and I end up going to see black bag. Blackbag was the move. It's the best movie out right now. It's fine. You know what I mean? Where do you place this among bong movies, Steve? Lower, you know what I mean? Like, I would even put this below. Yeah, I would put this middle of snowpiercer even, you know what I mean? And I like snowpiercer a lot. but like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, it's just sort of like, it's just sort of like, it's got that big goofy thing that he does with American movies. Yeah. Like I, like I liked all. I like, it's just weaker tea compared to his Korean stuff. Yeah. Yeah. Um, I mean, I'll say even with Oak Joe, which I only finally watched recently. Um, I mean, that's my least favorite bong movie and like, it's still really good. Yeah. So, you know, enjoyable movie. do this at some point. But yeah, but I was like a showtime's like a lot. But I'm really glad. I was talking about. In at 3 fucking Captain America.
Starting point is 00:15:44 And it's sixth week. I mean, this just tells you the desperation at the movie theater. I mean, $4.1 million in its sixth week. I have to wonder, I think this is actually, Eric, this is probably poaching the Grampy viewing vote because of Harrison Ford alone. I think that's. That is pulling, which is, which is, which is, which is, you know, you know, that is, you know, the Harrison Ford is my boyfriend old ladies. And there were a couple, like, the even older, like, we're going for double De Niro. Oh, that's right. I wish that double De Niro, Iful towered me. Exactly. Two Niro's going in you at the same time.
Starting point is 00:16:32 No, I think that, I think that viewing public was. was going to see black bag, because I did have some grampies at my black bag screening, and whenever, like, like, Michael Foschon and Michael Fossman were about to fuck. But I heard a few, like, Beavis and Buthead old lady, and I was also, I was also the only person under 65 for Blackbag. I will, I will say, though, probably there's a lot more, I would guess, anyway, in the Alton Nights crowd. The, like, I have a poster of Goodfellas and my man. man cave. All of those guys. All of those guys. Absolutely. Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, so we've been a bit here. We'll talk about it at length more in just a sec. But yes, number two, black bag from yeah, yeah, focus features here at week two, four point four million. You know, not a huge box office drop, but a nice hold only dropped 42%, which is a pretty, pretty nice for a movie like this. It means people are hearing about the majesty that is black bag. Yeah. And I'm, I mean, I'm guessing cost is not, I mean, I'm, I mean, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm going to sort of
Starting point is 00:17:43 Well, Soderberg decided to double his budget and still spend no money. Yeah. So that's exciting. Presence costs like, what, five million maybe. I don't know, man. This was a little higher. I think it said it was something like maybe between 30 to 50 million I read. I don't.
Starting point is 00:17:59 Beautiful. Beautiful. That's what I'm looking for. That's what a budget should be. Yes, for like a movie. That's, that's totally fun. You want to put a Hulk? That's going to put a Hulk in there. It's going to cost you $150 million. That's fine. That's going to cost you $150 million. I don't want a Hulk. How many Hulk's what color is? Oh, shit. A Red Hulk in a presence. Are you serious, sir, now? Joey, get the Red Hulk out the back. It's coming, buddy. It's coming. You want to put this on an iPhone? It's your business. you patch that hole in the red hawk's got to deflate. He's got to deflate. He's going to yeah. So from a 30-ish million dollar budget to a 250 million dollar budget, snow white and the seven, who gives a shit? Oh, boy. Forty-three million dollars. Folks at home, that'd be bad. That's not
Starting point is 00:19:02 nice. Not bad for a movie made in 1996. It does It does read that way, Steve Well, Godotadal God, I just, I can't with the live act I mean, it's not for us, clearly But it's also like, I've not I think the last live action Disney I saw was maybe That Cinderella movie, which was just okay
Starting point is 00:19:24 Oh, that was like the first one Yes, it was, yes, it really was And then I was like, because that one even was like Trying to be a movie. It wasn't like a shot-for-shot remake of the cartoon, oh, oh, oh, you know, you know, I was reasonable. I check in on all of these, like, like, if we're going down, if this is the ship we're going down on, like, I do really want to know what we're doing here. And, like, I'm sure I haven't read any, any, like, whatever the source material is for Snow White. But, like, I don't know why you have to turn her into Catanus Everdeen. I don't know why she always, these characters always have to be fighting the French Revolution. I don't know what that is. But like, it's annoying Like you're just like, like, like, like, like she just be having a cute little
Starting point is 00:20:10 With these absolutely disgusting dwarves So you're saying she leads a dwarf rebellion against the witch or whatever The Wicked Queen She is faded to be romance by like the, the boy Who is going to run the revolution And she's also going to help him It's going to be a co-led revolution There doesn't need to be a revolution
Starting point is 00:20:30 There's no revolution What the fucking fucking revolution? Exactly. Exactly. I think, I think, I think, I think, that I think, that I think, I think that I think that I think I think that's a thing, you know what I mean? Oh, yeah, there was a big war in one of those. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:20:43 It's so stupid. Oh, my God. Lord of the Rings was Lord of the Rings, which was not, which is a fantasy novel. Right. And these are fairy tales, which are very different things. Yeah, true. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:55 I think the last one of these we watched was when the Little Mermaid went to Disney Plus. Oh, my mother. Dude, it's terrible. It's terrible. I haven't seen, I haven't seen, I haven't seen, you know, There's no reason to, I don't, you know, I mean, and I'm sorry, like, Gall get out, regardless of her abysmal politics, one of the worst to ever do it. So, like, what are we doing?
Starting point is 00:21:21 You got her singing in this, brother. No. What are you doing there? What was, what was the idea there? Huh? She could only do Wonder Woman and, like, Lady Terminators and, or, or like, maybe you could put her, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, you know what I'm like, like, you're like, she's she could have done something similar to Cape Blanchet in Black Bag.
Starting point is 00:21:47 It would have been much worse than what Cape Blanchett does, but you could, but I see, I see her in that. I see what you're saying, Steve. She either needs to, like, play a ruthless killing machine or someone who's frame of reference is like an alien that just got to Earth. We all made fun of it, but she's best. suited for stuff like that a Nile thing. A thing that everybody's going to forget but make fun of her for about five months because she says champagne to fill the Nile
Starting point is 00:22:13 and it sounds stupid. Yeah, like that's fine. If that's what we're doing, that's fine. And if they want to make another Wonder Woman, whatever. Cool. I guess. This is like a role for like an elder statesman actress that like really has some gravitas that can really like play up the cartooniness. You know what I mean? Like you need
Starting point is 00:22:32 a lot from this. kind of a role wasn't this wasn't this also the angelina joe wasn't what was that's sleeping maleficent maleficent yeah i i've never said it out loud they sound pretty the same sleeping beauty. The plot's the plot's the The evil lady. Now you got to You know, you got to get to make her These days you got to ask. And these days are better For X-Man cow. No problem.
Starting point is 00:23:11 Yeah, I don't know. It's chalk it up till I'll never watch that. No, it's just never. You don't need to. And according to these numbers, not a lot of people across the country are either. Although I will say, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, that's just depressing, honestly, the Lilo and Stitch one. Not that I love, I mean, my wife was into that movie, so, like, I watched it as an adult with her. She's like, oh, it's a good movie.
Starting point is 00:23:43 You should watch it. We watched it. It's a really fun, like, cartoonish, like, the humor in that movie is very slapstick, very, like, Warner Brothers ask. that you can't do in live action, and it doesn't make any goddamn sense. to try to the last run of Disney, like before they turned into this juggernaut thing of, like, actual animated movies, was really good. The Emperor's New Groove, Lilo and Stitch, I think, and her, I remember Hercules is pretty good, too. Hercules was good, yeah, I remember Hercules.
Starting point is 00:24:13 Like, I thought they were doing good, but then they were, like, on the outs at the time. Like, they weren't even as popular as that. So, of course, now it's, like, all crap. Yeah, we'll see We will see what, though, though, you know what? It's not going to be all crap It's only going to be maybe 30% crap Our three-night six-show residency

Starting point is 00:26:08 But you got to buy stuff For us to put it back So you're right It is getting darker every day And it's for a good cause I mean look it's night outside still Yeah look at that It's noon on Monday
Starting point is 00:26:18 And it's night outside still that's how that's how dark is uh so so yes kick into that's in the summer you're going to be a lot of fun got uh three movies today so we're going to get right into it we've mentioned it a couple times already
Starting point is 00:26:33 it's been out for a couple weeks but my god if black bag just isn't the film of the year for me hot diggity dog I mean right now at least you know true true story the second the movie started the part when literally when uh you see that tracking shot of Fosbunder
Starting point is 00:26:49 entering the club. I just turned to my wife. I was like, I just turned to my favorite movie. I literally said that. Because I knew I was going to be right. Amazing. Amazing. From the subject matter and just that shot alone, I'm like, yeah, I'm good. I'm good. It's, it's a well-made movie for adults that doesn't pander to a single goddamn person. No. It's, I was stunned that you make it all the way through that like 96, 93 minutes, whatever it is. And I was like, holy shit. Not a second of pandering. Just a straight up mature. made espionage movie. It doesn't feel rushed at all. That was the, that was getting to it. There were a couple of strans left. I was like, I don't know how they, but they pull it off pretty amazingly in 93 minutes, which is just insanity. Completely insane. Wild. Soderberg, look at this. I mean,
Starting point is 00:27:41 you don't need a stuffy Englishman to make a spy movie. Yes. Yes. He's the best. And I mean, he did, he didn't a great job. I'm, I'm, I'm just I'm just astounded by this movie. And put your fucking iPhone sometimes and a real movie, ladies and gentlemen. How difficult is that? That's the... Hey, all the experiments with the iPhone what led to that cool little
Starting point is 00:28:03 tracking shot at the beginning, Stephen. That's the trap about the iPhone. Do you think that was an iPhone? I mean, it was unsteady. That's what was so cool about it, is that like you felt the vibrations with everything when you were going through it. When I go to a museum, I don't want to watch this. I want to look at the
Starting point is 00:28:19 catches I would look at the full painting. Steve, Steve, I'm going to go out of them Steve, because I've seen a good chunk of those and say, maybe you should watch them first. Yes, I agree. I agree. Because I'm very good. Unsane is a fucking excellent movie. Okay. High Flying Bird, very good. Amazing movie. Presence is really fucking good. I want to check Presence. The experimentation of Presence is why you have that shot at the beginning of Black Day. Because that's all Presence is, is that kind of shot.
Starting point is 00:28:45 But it's, I mean, look, but I just love that him in the the mold of, again, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, I'm just, it's not for me. I'm just going to be like, that's cool. Enjoy your iPhone movie. But when he comes in hot with like, movie stars and a reasonable budget and like, uh, you know, kind of a popcorn, uh, like popcorn adjacent, uh, fair, I'm way. Oh, you know what I mean? Blasted through a bag of popcorn during this movie, dude. Absolutely. And I mean, this, this cat's, dude, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like Tom Berk, man, is so good in this movie.
Starting point is 00:29:28 Reggie Jean-Page is fucking great in this movie. Naomi Harris, dude, I don't think I've seen Naomi Harris be this good a real long time. Marisa Bella, who I wasn't familiar with until this movie, I don't think anyway. She steals the movie, honestly, Marisa Bella does. Oh, yeah, yeah. And then this is, I'll tell you right now, because the dude has had some real lows that I have seen. I think one of which was even on a secret movie, but it just goes to show you, like, like, you get good actors with good directors when you can pair them up as such. Pierce Brosnan is amazing in this movie.
Starting point is 00:30:00 Yeah, he's really, really good. And he has been putting out wet farts on direct to streaming for years now, and I've been watching him, but, you know. He's been killing Jackie Chan's fucking relatives. That's right. For what? For what? I'm Pierce Bronson. For what?
Starting point is 00:30:17 I but it's it's it's also like it's also like it's such a good movie it's it's it's it's it's it's it's like I'm like oh shit it's and it's so cool yep no because they're doing a lot of like oh steiglitz that and steiglitz this and what and you're like who the fuck is steiglitz is pierce brosniz right and he's there and you they you see him in a conference room for his first introduction unceremoniously yeah I think I'm so used to watch in those Marvel movies that I'm like ever go I'm like there he is it's not black Adam you don't have to stand and give your ovation but yeah it's a great movie I really enjoyed this and it's sexy and such yeah oh and such dude sexy and such and more I mean that like final shot hello it's a lot of talking you have all this tension and stuff and most of it's just spoken in language. And the way the way the way the way the way the way the way. And like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, it's, like, it's, like, symphonic way of feeling. Like, I, I, the whole time, I just felt completely moved by what was going on here. And, like, he, he subverts things that, like, like, like, so many people would just stay in the room for that first dinner and make that the movie. And just, and let that be the thing. But no, no, he like, he's like, no, no, we'll come back. We'll do it again. And that's That's gonna be like, that's gonna be
Starting point is 00:31:50 It's gonna be like, it's gonna be like, that's gonna be like, you're just as interesting Because he's editing it and shooting it in all these different ways And actually like building tension, as you say, mostly through dialogue. That's why I turned to my wife and that's the best movie. The control you can tell from that first shot is like, yeah, you're in for a good one. You know what I mean? He's on one, let him cook, as they say. And he does.
Starting point is 00:32:13 And I'll tell you what, another dude that we have, you know, poked fun at a lot of the years with a lot of the stuff that he's written but he is a very talented writer it just showcases again but like this is a great David Kepp script it absolutely is great and you know
Starting point is 00:32:31 he's a dude that we've had some fun with over the years but like I was just sitting there like man this feels like out of sight this feels like an ocean's kind of thing like it just has that level of Soderberg to it you know that level of filmmaking I think I think
Starting point is 00:32:47 He is a great match for Soderberg. I think he's been, I think he wrote presents, and I think he wrote Kimmy, which is another really good one by Sotaburg as of late. I just think he knows what's like, it's the way that Fincher understood him too. Like I think Panic Room is really good because of that as well. Like he has a very particular flavor that a good director who knows how to just get the bolts right. They, they know how to make his movies. I'm sure. I'm sure. I'm sure he is more. I'm sure this resembles more of his superhero big budget blockbuster things. Oh yeah. It's changed a thousand times. So it's not
Starting point is 00:33:29 necessarily on his shoulders fully. By the way, good soundtrack too in that opening shot of going into that club squeezes up the junction. I was surprised was in this movie. Also, isn't it David Holmes did the, I liked, I liked all of the actual, yeah, I mean, I mean, I mean, I was just like, so when you pull up, like, IMDB, of course, the trailer, like, starts running and whatever, what is great about it, like, kind of exemplifies the quality level of the movie or whatever, like, you know, we talked about the budget, we talked about like the, like, this movie feels like a globe proddingish espionage thriller by doing so little to make it that, you know what I mean? It's like, you're looking at a room, but that's all you kind of need. There's one car. There's all you need. There's no fat on this at all. It's just this story. And, you know, I think, Chris, you were saying like that I was feeling that too at the beginning like, oh, is this a movie that's because I hadn't even seen a trailer for it. I was like, I'm just going to go see BlackBank. I'm trying to avoid it. I was like, oh, is the whole movie this dinner party? Because you do have those movies out there.
Starting point is 00:34:44 And I think, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, but the fact that it's like, and both are excellent is really just, I love the movie. Just a little, uh, further reading if you're interested in it, uh, because I'm a little bit of a tie-in comic. No, because I'm the only person that watched the show. The Agency with Michael Fosbender, another sexy, smart spy situation. It's on Paramount Plus. I really enjoy that show and I'd like it to get a second season. Oh, I've been meaning to check that out. that's a good reminder for me, and by the way, this, this came out, this was a box office. I mean, I know it was a bad weekend, but imagine if they, imagine if there was a real ad campaign behind an adult movie like this.
Starting point is 00:35:27 Honestly, yeah. And I, like, again, I think that, uh, the hold at 42% loss like really speaks to like people like Steve who saw it the first weekend and we're just like telling people like, yo, this is what's up. Like this is a fucking real movie that you don't know about because they spent zero. to tell you about it. You're not buying fucking commercials for this. You got to buy in front of the big game and whatever. You got to sort this shit. You know, seek it out sometimes. But like, that's also what we're here for. So trust us on this. Go see BlackBag. It's fucking awesome. I was in an auditorium full of adults. And it just was like really great feeling. Something that's not for adults and I didn't feel great watching it at all is the new pile of flaming whale shit from the Russo brothers. It's called the electric state. And we just, you know, you know, it's been out for a couple of movies, but we did just want to talk about it, God, God, but I just haven't seen this yet at all, but please go ahead. My God, Rousseau Brothers TV movies, they keep churning out these TV movies. No, thank you, sir. I wish they had the balls to put this in theaters. I want to see what the actual box office numbers would be for the electric state. Not Netflix's crooked nonsense.
Starting point is 00:36:42 I want to hear what money who would actually say one for the electric state please. you would start talking about maybe that is being a complete failure not Mickey 17 absolutely well because Mickey 17 didn't cost $320 million that's how much this cost this movie is one of the most expensive movies of all time oh wonderful 320 million dollars there's a video oh man I can't remember I wish I could credit the guy
Starting point is 00:37:08 it's some English lad doing a funny video where he's like like, oh, how did this movie cost $320 million dollars? that's this many Avengers movies. He keeps going, you know, that's 50, you know, whatever. And it's just some like small level, but it's so funny. Is it on the screen? Is it on the screen? Do you feel like you see that value?
Starting point is 00:37:31 Well, of course, of course you do because you're watching it on at home, on your couch. You can really feel it on your, you know, your pseudo-melfunctioning sound bar and you're kind of, on adjusted properly just slams you. It's just It's just slams you. It's just It's just great nonsense. I think The character design is terrible It's also doing a bad job
Starting point is 00:37:56 Of creating A mythology you should care about You know what I mean? People will tell you That that that illustrated novel is really great And I'm sure it is I what the Rousseau's gave me to look at And think about I didn't care about these characters
Starting point is 00:38:10 I didn't care about the little robot boy, even though he's also it's supposed to be super cute, even though it's also exactly bumblebee from all of those fucking Transformers movies. Sure is. Yeah, yeah. Sure is. I know, I'll say, like, the design of the robots, I don't think is that great. The action isn't well directed, obviously. But, like, the look of this, like, you can see it in how well the badly designed robots look, if that makes sense. Like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:39 They don't look cool or interesting. whatsoever. They all looked like rejected shit from a video game. But they look like, like, but they look good for what they are. Like, like, that's clearly where all the money went is designing, you know, these things and animating them so, you know, meticulously and whatever. But like, that can only account for some of this money. I don't understand it. Like, how much did Chris Pratt make for this movie? How much were you throw in Millie Bobby Brown's way? Like, where is the money going? I guess if the money is now to embarrass yourself, as most as possible like Chris Pratt might have asked because he's got this wig thing oh boy like that might have to do with it but I don't know like to your point Andrew
Starting point is 00:39:23 the little robots they all look like the dancing robot on your favorite little phone game that has five billion in game purchases they all look like the little dancing logo of that
Starting point is 00:39:40 game and the guy that you have to get your dollars worth of magic crystals. I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, like, that's asking you not to look at it. Like, it's so dark that, like, Jason Alexander, like, they, like, they were like, like, hey, Jason Alexander. Oh, man. Would you embarrass yourself for us? That is, like, like, that's why I think the money is getting so big now. It's because, like, Chris Pratt knows, like, the, the, the game is not long for him. It's not like he's doing the West Anderson movies or trying to get into a PTA and just movie or even like that, like he's like a Ryan Johnson movie or something like that he's not doing that. He's doing these movies because I think he sees his talent as limited. He's like, but I will embarrass myself. I will do that.
Starting point is 00:40:31 And if you pay me $50 million to be in the new Russo Brothers movie where you don't have to fucking like give a shit of what it actually looks like. it's all done on your couch. That that that that that's all for your couch. That's like, that might. That's just be like, like, look, that's just better for me. And speaking of from your couch, that's where, uh, because of the design of the drone robot nonsenses, that's where Coleman Domingo filmed his moot role. Oh, where, uh, G and Carlo Esposito filmed his role. It's like, hi guys. I'm in your movie. How's it go? That's like, that's like Sega CD level fucking
Starting point is 00:41:07 graphics. It's ridiculous. I mean, I mean, it's just, that all looks really bad. There was a funny comment here. I think our, uh, uh, someone in the chat here. Carlyle Commons got it right. The money went to the rights to Mr. Peanuts. Now, Jesus Christ. Why is it that Mr. Peanut is the only like real property in a world of like fake things? Random. Oh, shit. Random. I also wonder, because, wasn't, didn't Robert do the voice of Mr. for an ad campaign possibly? I think he did, but this is Woody Harold. Yes. This is very Woody Harold.
Starting point is 00:41:50 But just like the picking of, it's just so odd that that is your picture. You know, that's interesting. I did not know about this at all. I want a dark and gritty origin story from Mr. Peter. I would love it. Dude, I'll tell you, there's one of the funniest moments in this movie.
Starting point is 00:42:07 is when Mr. is essentially because, is top hat off. the top hat is, attached to the robot head. they're ripping it up. Woody Harold says,
Starting point is 00:42:20 like, oh, no, my peanut head. Wow, that's nuts. I will say, it's really funny. It's really funny.
Starting point is 00:42:26 I will say this, there's still, there's, you know, early voting is, is, is happening right now. That it might be a worse
Starting point is 00:42:34 of 2025. We're just, we're just going to see, where it lands. But also Absolutely fuck the But because Because they have been
Starting point is 00:42:47 About streaming is the future Streaming is everything And then when they make this Incredibly bad movie For all the money in the world They come out and say Well yeah I guess in retrospect
Starting point is 00:42:58 I don't know how Netflix will ever make that money back But uh you know But that's that's fun That's what you say after the check Who cares? Wowza Yeah. Also, I mean, and then you take this gig, making these Avengers movies that you know, like, it's all just bullshit. It's like they will say whatever for whomever is cutting the check, dude. Precisely, yeah. In that instance, it's Netflix cut in the check. Oh, theatrical's dead. Oh, now Disney's going to cut the check for these new Avengers movies. Come to the theater. See our Avengers movies. We're totally full of shit on both sides.
Starting point is 00:43:32 because they are also being paid. That is their whole game. Why would you beefed because you want to get owned immediately? Why would you do that? What was the brain? Chris, I think they think they think their fans don't know what Martin Scorsese is. Yeah, I guess he's the gangster shoot him up director and that's it.
Starting point is 00:43:58 But I will always remember them for everyone who cheerleaded on. the death of movie theaters. I remember your name. You're on the two big ones. That's the thing is I, you know, I haven't seen Winter Soldier in quite some time. But I, you know, when I was, when I had COVID, I rewatched End Game and Infinity War. And I enjoyed myself. They're totally fine, big budget.
Starting point is 00:44:24 They achieve mostly what they should be achieving. But they couldn't leave well enough alone and have like all the, it's not just all the money that they got. no no no no no no no no no me uh... you me and dupre uh... the directors of you me and dupre uh... what are we talking about here uh... uh... there's an interesting thing going on in the chat regarding uh... original Netflix properties and now I'm wow now I'm curious uh... for those of us on the show here I've seen both of them which movie is worse the electric state
Starting point is 00:44:59 or that first because I didn't see the second one we're just counting part one. I will say, rebel moon's better. No, I'm going to say only because I could tell three things that have, maybe it's because it's been more recently but like the second Rebel Moon ended I didn't know a name,
Starting point is 00:45:20 I didn't know a faction, I didn't know even what, even right now, I can't tell you what the setup is to Rebel Moon, like is it in the future, is it in the past, What? Can anyone can anyone? Can anyone? Like, like, like, like, like, man? So there's this moon. It's a village. It's basically, it's the, here's the thing. I do remember more about Rebel Moon than I think I do about the electric state. I ever watch Rebel Moon like over a year. It's like, there's the girl and they live on like the farming community planet. The big space Nazi comes down and says, hey, we're taking all your grain and whatnot. Deal with it. They beat the shit out of the. Ed screen. Ed screen is that. head Nazi. They beat the shit out of the ruler. They beat the shit out of the head. They beat the head. This girl up, you know, you know, rebel against the space Nazis. We have a horse guy at one point. And he's got to
Starting point is 00:46:18 like, he's got to help tame the beast. And if you tame the beast, oh, I'll let you go out of slavery. This is not a log line. This is sort of like stray images that are still in my brain. I'm telling you though, though, though, I don't have those stray images for the electric state other than, like, like, like, like, like, rip up, like, Brian Cox being like, I'm throwing a baseball. Like, that's, ah, I think, I never thought I would say this, but I think for me, it's, well, it's absolutely Rebel Moon. It's, it's just, it's stylized garbage versus, like, plain, like, algorithmic garbage. Sure. It's just a different flavor.
Starting point is 00:46:53 That's fair. I would say probably, like, there's better, if you looked through it, there's probably better shots. in Rebel Moon than there are in Electric State by a country by us. I'll say this about we're clearly, you know, outside in some respects, way more than we ever are in Rebel Moon. That's 100% true. There's that. I mean, there is some legitimate outside in Rebel Moon. I'm not saying it's all soundstage,
Starting point is 00:47:18 but you're outside more in the electric state. How was Brian Cox? He's voicing a fucking robot that throws baseballs. It's just as terrible. Well, he's the greatest actor ever, right? he keeps telling me. They had to cut out, brada, bra. Oh, Brian, Brian, Brian, but I'm in a booth. I'm in a ba-da-pa-papa-ba. Stop trying to sneak it in. We know they try to pay you. So, I mean, I feel like we could go along on this, which we just may next January for the stuff we watched the previous year month. So keep that in your back pocket. Speaking of stuff that you might want to keep in your back pocket, we're going to close out today talking about, oh, God, the new Barry Levinson movie, starring Robert De Niro's, starring Robert De Nunes. Dude, dude,
Starting point is 00:48:06 dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, or just Robert De Niro's and then a little squared number two at the top. Put it back up for a second. Yeah. From this poster, I would think it's Robert, it's the same character, but at some point he puts a hat on. Like, that is, that's, that's not two different characters. Oh, oh, he's not where he is. Yeah. You're kind of right. They're kind of similar characters. But this movie, finally answers the question, Steve. What would it be like if Robert De Niro did a Joe Pesci impression with a bunch of fucking Albert Brooks makeup on? Because he, like, you're watching this movie. And like when he's doing just the non-hat guy, uh, he's just doing a Robert DeNero. He's just doing a Robert DeNero. performance. It's a totally fine. It's a totally fine. But the other one, he's definitely
Starting point is 00:49:06 he's talking faster. He justiculates. He's, I swear to God, doing a Joe Pesci impression of this movie. Ouch. It's really bad. Eric, what is this movie about? Oh, boy. So basically what it's about the alto nights, okay? So it's like a social club, lower east side, blah, blah, blah. They're Italians. one Italian, hat guy, he was kind of, he was, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he was a double homicide, went to Italy to hide out. And then what do you know, this whole World War II thing happened. So, the other De Niro, Frank Costello, stays behind and builds this empire. Then Vito, Hat De Niro comes back and wants a piece of the pie. And there is, you'd you'd you'd be more conflict there it's a little dry it's dude I'm like I'm like I don't know how I mean it takes real skill to make the mafia this boring yeah like I've seen some like sleepy mafia movies yeah but this is a paint dryingly boring mafia and I think they realized how it didn't work when they were you know after they did an assembled work print or whatever because then you also now have De Niro as for
Starting point is 00:50:29 Frank, that's not hat De Niro, doing like, like, like, like, we're watching, which is kind of the documentary just him on a bench talking to the camera, dude, about what you're about to see because it's like, all right, the transition doesn't really work here. So what you're about to see in the movie is Jay Leno like, does this clip entity set up? Does this clip did he set up? Dude, the whole movie needs a setup.
Starting point is 00:50:56 Also, speaking of like clips and whatever. whatever definite like at least four to five times in this movie it fades to black like because like it's it's a terribly edited movie and like when you get to those things it's like well we had no idea where to really go next so we just kind of faded to black right here and then we'll pick the movie but like it's so horrible they put in all of these like bits of archival footage of the time instead of showing you that time because they don't have the money. in the production budget to actually design the past so you just like at clips from other and then just like news real footage of the lower east side and they're like there you go you can imagine it right i i have i heard these were all demands given because they have all pre-sold this of course to the aARP streaming app oh yes where it will be there with with ads of course uh but like yeah i mean like when you make these kinds of deals of course you have these little these bumps. Definitely check it out when it hits cemetery plus. By the way, is someone else who's in this that I didn't even recognize is Cosmo Jarvis, the guy from Shogun. He looks terrible in this too. Oh my God. He's that guy. Oh, wow. He's crazy.
Starting point is 00:52:19 He looks sort of like a, like a Benny Safty character. He looks like, he's like poured into this suit. His neck is too big. I was like, who is this weird guy they God. Turns out it's a shaved Cosmo Jarvis. He plays the dude. He plays the movie. The movie starts with an assassination attempt on Frank Costello. So non-hat De Niro. And it's this dude. Cosmo Jarvis is doing the hit. And dude, it's like this is, so this is the kind of filmmaking you have in this movie, right? So he's, he's waiting for an elevator in his building, right? And the guy comes up and he goes, hey, Frank. And he shoots him in the head. And De Niro like falls back into this mirror that's in the hallway, and it shatters, and it shatters shatters shatteres shatters. And you're just like, oh boy, do I get it? Like, oh boy, are you laying it on thick bear? This hat, non-hat conversation reminds me. Andrew, do you remember our least
Starting point is 00:53:19 creative nickname for somebody within like in college? There was these two guys that would come on our floor. I think there were friends of somebody else that we didn't like. And like, we just didn't like these dudes. just had, didn't, didn't know them, didn't know them, didn't have, didn't know them, just had, like, like, it was, it was a slow, it was a slow weekend for coming up with nicknames, at a certain point, non-glasses and glasses broke up, we would still call this other kid non-glasses, even though most people are non-glasses. The one guy, like, transferred or something, and the fucking partnership was broken up. How many times? Have you times? No, okay. There was a guy. There was a guy who
Starting point is 00:54:08 This is another great nickname. There was a guy who always dressed in like a gray Inspector Gadgett trench coat and like a dumb hat and we called him costume guy. Sure. Yeah, that's That was just yeah, because he literally just walked around in that detective costume constantly. You know, see this is what it was like going to an arts college for
Starting point is 00:54:26 because this is the shit that the federal government's trying to rob you of cool nickn't cool nickn't people wearing stupid shit you know very creative this art school but yeah it seems like this might have been a David Zaslov passion project also that I'm reading
Starting point is 00:54:42 about like that he really was pushing for this movie to be made someone said that to me on Blue Sky and I was like where did you hear that I had not heard that I can't find the right source for it either yeah not me neither but like I believe it because he's the worst he's the worst it's ever done it
Starting point is 00:54:55 oh well you know he seems like a nice guy he's probably great on the golf course. I'm sure he's a nice man. You know, Steve, who's in this is Michael Rospoli. Who's a dude who's played some mafia. He was, what's his face? Jackie Appreel. Oh, right. He's pretty good in this. Yeah, he's actually not bad. He's in like a good mafia movie and nobody told him that he was actually in the Alto Knights. Oh, that's unfortunate. Yeah, you know who else fucking sucks? in this movie, Debra Messing as like Frank Costello's what's just doing a goodfellers one time. Real terrible. Oh, Eric, though, did you catch the Seinfeld alum here, though? Oh, shoot. Well, Debra Messing won. Well, right, Debra Messing. No, I don't think I did.
Starting point is 00:55:51 No, I want to see if I can get the right guy here. Okay, so the actor's name, I just had to look is up for the first time right now. He's just, uh, uh, he's just, uh, he's up for the movie. He's up for the uh, uh, on the lockbox episode of Seinfeld that owns the bird. Oh, right. Okay. Jerry's neighbor that he doesn't know lives like right there and has. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. That guy. Like a big like, you know, tough guy mafia dude was pretty interesting. Sounds like a lot of people passed. Passed away with this cast. A lot of old timers. It's just, it's just, I mean, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, written by what's his face, dude wrote Goodfellas, dude wrote Goodfellas, dude wrote Casino.
Starting point is 00:56:38 But would be right this? I mean, the dude is 92 years old right now. Well, this movie is, apparently been bouncing around for a long time. That makes sense. That makes sense. Marty was going to do it. No, I swear. Yeah, I'm sure.
Starting point is 00:56:53 Yeah, apparently this has been, the story of the Altonet's been around since the mid-sense. 70s. Wow. Wow. I mean, wow. It's just feels like, it just feels like a bunch of dudes that's just you don't have the juice anymore. Everybody, everybody was tired. I'll say this too. The end of the movie, I don't know. I guess tip to Chris's AARP comment or whatever. It was a very old crowd for me. And I got to tell you, it was just one of my classic New Jersey. reactions. The movie ends. The movie ends. You know, you know, you know, you know, there was a little outburst of the theater and I just, I just, I just yelled. Are you kidding me?
