There was a lot going on to the box office. It's been a little while since we were on the air. So let's catch up with who was buying tickets to what? In a box office segment, we like to call highest gross. Oh, yes, it was an interesting time at the box office this weekend for a few reasons, but something that didn't come out. I think the last time we're on the air, I don't think anyway,

but in it number five, you guessed it, minions and monsters. The best of them. I will say this. Is that right? This is the best of these movies by a huge margin. Oh, interesting. Okay. It is actually entertaining.

I saw it to my niece saw it so I wanted to see it and talk to her about it and like it they they focus more on minions doing Looney Tune stuff they focus more on like Hollywood like it's about movies the movie is about movies right and all of that I was just like oh this is just much more streamlined

I don't have to care about Gru and all his bullshit I'm not caring so much about your the overlords they're looking for the they make friends with a cute monster who turns out to be not so cute uh oh Oh, that fucking jerk. Got a pressing question about this, Chris.

Now, how is the bop and ass? You know, because these are these little guys like to like shove their bottoms on people and dance around and like do the fanny play for the kids. How was that? Is it better? I'm going to disappoint you here. There is still fanny play at hand. Thank God. Everyone stop saying fanny play.

Okay. I think bopping ass is as close as we want to get to that particular third. I thought I was trying to make it softer. I mean, Fannie is, to me, is a childless offensive. Yeah, it's true. Child life. My question, Chris, really quickly,

is it, as I suspected, a backdoor pilot for a monsters movie, or is it not? I actually don't think, like, the main monster who they befriend, I think that you could maybe see something happening there, but the other monsters aren't really like that.

It's not somewhere I'm like, oh, here's a new character that you're going to love. Okay. That's one, maybe. do The Odyssey, right? Do Cyclops. He's getting new adventures. He's got his own thing. Oh, I love that.

You can just move back, you know. Very cute. I've never agreed with your theory about a monster's backdoor pilot, Steve. But I will say, I would not be surprised if we get into like what they did with Shrek, like Monsters Halloween thing, a Monster's Christmas special. I could see that. We're going to the Monsters for Christmas and the, you know, those little guys get to sleigh and go visit the monsters.

Something like that. Gotta learn about Santa Claus sometime. Exactly right. A fun crampus for the minions to play with. Exactly. There you go. 9.6 million in its fourth week. Globally, it's done $411 million on an $85 million budget.

So all good in Minion Town. That is for sure. Up in fourth place, something that did so well. It was only supposed to play a weekend, and it has unsurprisingly expanded in it forth the production of Hedies on the musical that was captured. Looking at these numbers, this is pretty interesting stuff. $9.7 million for this thing. I'm shocked.

Pretty, pretty nuts. Comparable stuff to this. The Hamilton one debuted a $10.1 million. Waitress did 2.6 and that the Daniel Matt Radcliffe, Merrily, we roll along, was $1.3 million. So this is right in there with Hamilton. I'm kind of shocked that, I mean, like my wife and my brother and sister-in-law went to see 80s down and loved it. but I have not heard about the show as much as I hear Hamilton and I was here fucking everywhere. Oh yeah.

Yeah. Town definitely at a moment. I saw it. I loved it. I'm actually kind of glad that they got the original cast and this thing kind of exists. Like I don't, I'm not going to go out to theaters to see it, but I can imagine in a couple of months or whatever a year. Me and my wife just watch it because it's so awesome. It's really cool.

Yeah. Cisco and Ebert here. I saw it. I didn't like it. I saw the play. But I think it was not original cast. So maybe that was part of it. Oh, that can happen.

I love a person who wrote the music, Annius Mitchell. Yes. Yeah, I love, I love them. I think they're great. The dude with the very deep voice guy in that. Patrick Page. Yeah, he's on the Gilded Age playing like a fucking cutthroat scumbag and it's awesome. Coming in at number three, Chris Cabin's favorite movie of the year.

No, just a Toy Story 5. Toy Story 5 continues a little bit of a run here. Hold on a second. Chris, you prefer minions and monsters to Toy Story. Oh, by, miles. I'm surprised. Miles and miles.

That's pretty surprised. I haven't seen either. I don't like either, so I don't like the franchise. I pray to never see Toy Story 5. That's where I'm at. I think that's fine. One is sincerely funny. The other one is just like, please keep seeing these movies, please. Yeah.

Like, if you have a movie where like the cute little guy, like you've been doing them for so long, you have to make a joke about the cute little guy is going bald. Probably time to stop making Toy Story movies. I will say, I liked minions. I didn't see Minions Rise of Group, but

I did not like Toy Story 4. That is a movie that does not need to exist at all. So we'll see. And check this shit out, though. So 10 million just in this sixth weekend. It's done over, so we're now at $1.02 billion

globally, which is great. because it covers the absolute total failure of our number two movie Moana Live Action That's right. Toy Story Five is so successful. Disney's no longer shitting their pants

as much that this movie is a huge bomb. Can we stop already? Is it possible to stop? This one might do it. This one might do it. Tangled. Oh, Tangled. Tangle is coming up next. That's going to be next year, I think. I just, I mean, this one made no sense

even from the jump. It never makes sense. It's always a bad. idea but literally this movie is still fresh and new and like the kiddies love it and the kitties aren't even old enough to bring their kitties to it you know what i mean like that's usually the thing is like oh cinderella or whatever or it was snow white or something you know like i saw this as a kid right now my now you know that might be too old for my young uh iPad addicted kids let me bring them to the new one the moana kids aren't even old enough to be like hey my younger sibling can now go see moana with me it hasn't been that fucking long so you you like it needs

another 10 years you're saying so they can start shitting out babies. That's my guess. That's how these nostalgia things work, but this is, I think, one of the ones that's been closest to the release of the animated one. And yeah, we're looking at 228 globally

on a $250 million budget. So this is, it's a total fucking disaster. And honestly, Chris, you are right that they are doing Tangled, but I'm curious, have they started making it because this would have they okay it's in production moana the thing is

is that milana too just came out last year like you don't need to do this whereas like i feel like they've been waiting a little bit before they they're definitely going to break out a frozen version of this because frozen one of their biggest hits and like i can see that actually making money this one

i was like what are you going to do with it it's mostly realistic characters anyway in the fucking anime version it looks good why do you care well why are actually saying Oh, go ahead, Eric. Audiences said, Moana stay home this weekend.

I am glad we let that through. I have to say a lot of people are saying, too, that this one more so than some of the other ones, these live action, whatever, this is so close that they were like, this is like the fucking Gus Van Sant, shot by shot psycho. Like it's that close.

Like shot by shot, Moana, we're just making live action. Very weird. Very, very weird. Because also it's the you know, you got Dwayne Johnson in both, which is really, really bizarre. I'm sorry, like, it's not even, that's not interesting. That's bizarre. You know what I mean? Like, it's just sort of weird to do both.

I just don't get it. Because like, you know, with like Beauty and the Beast or something like that, like, that voice actor wasn't going to play the Beast. So you at least got Dan Stevens in there. It changes it a little bit. It's still terrible. Exactly. And no surprise in it, number one, something that we will be officially reviewing a little later in the program.

But of course, Chris Nolan's audits. see still rocking and rolling into the second week. Yeah, look at these numbers. $87 million in its second weekend, my friends. That is higher. This second weekend gross is higher than the first weekend gross of Oppenheimer. A lot of racist sweating about the marketing budget. We're very nervous.

We're very nervous about the marketing budget. We might have surpassed it significantly, which gives racist quite a bit of pause. Did you check out the UK numbers? We put a lot of posters up over there. I don't know. Yeah, this is bonkers. A 31% drop in its second week. There's only two other movies that have made over $100 million in their opening week that have done this, which is the first Wicked and Top Gun Maverick.

So this movie really, really rocking and rolling. 57% of this total gross is a premium large format title screens showings, which does include iMacs, which iMacs itself globally, is 22% of this gross. Are they going to get, I don't know about Marvel movies and IMAX. Is Spider-Man going to get any IMAX screens or no?

Not that I have seen. Yeah. I don't know if they do that often or not. Maybe they'd never do that, because they're going to do whatever Vista, whatever, uh, Doom Vision or whatever we're doing at the end? Infinity Vision.

Infinity Vision. Apologies. Which is nothing, but it's a fake thing that they are putting on PLF screenings of that movie. It is not a real thing. There is no new technology that has come about. It is a fake advertising thing. Well, can't you sue them for like not, like if I'm going to see it an infinity vision,

I want to be able to see the movie forever, like in a loop. Well, the movie won't end as these movies do not. It'll feel like an infinity. Hey, did you hear? Watermelon is back at booster juice all summer long. Nice. I love the watermelon explosion. And the watermelon way.

Real quick, elsewhere at the box office, one to mention it because we reviewed it out of Toronto and it's a fun as hell movie. But Motor City is out now in a limited release capacity. And we're looking at this is a nice little number. this was ninth at the box office. 1.6 million on 1,600 screen, so not too shabby. You know what?

That's nice because the, uh, what's this? Uh, Reacher season four is, is coming out in like two weeks, two or three weeks. Oh, is that right? They know what they're doing. I really liked Motor City when we saw it in Toronto. It's just music and murder. Okay. So what's the log line?

Because I've, I don't need to do a trailer for this guy. So it's, you should go in knowing that it is one of these like pseudo gimmick movies where there's no dialogue. Oh, okay. So Alan Richson plays a dude who gets out of jail. He's kind of getting his life around, turned around. And then he gets screwed over, blamed for a crime. He didn't commit.

And so he's trying to get the guys that done him wrong, basically. So it's all, it's basically like a giant feature link music video. You've got Jack White curated all these songs for it. Oh, cool. Music of his, but like he carried a soundtrack. He does have a really awesome cameo. So yeah, elsewhere is a big recommend. So I think we should just go.

go right into our next segment. We will plug what we have to plug after the segment, but our buds are here to help us go through the next segment. Now, this is a segment we have not done for a while, but it still remains the aptly named trailer segment. And we are talking about a real one today, y'all, something I saw out of Sundance, it is called Union County, and to help tee it up, because they will do a better job than any of us ever could. We have the director and writer of the film as well as a producer and they co-edited it together. Adam Meeks and our longtime bud, Sean Weiner. Hey guys.

Hey, guys. Hey, congrats on making a real movie. Yes. I love that trailer segment song. That's a jam. Oh, total jam. I love that. It takes a few measures and you just have to wade it out.

Oh, yeah. You're just going to sit there. You're just going to sit and enjoy it. Just get your ass right in that seat and just get ready for it. I will say, got me. Speaking of trailer segment, I saw this this weekend. I saw a Manhunter at the IFC. And I saw the trailer on the big screen.

And I was blown. I've seen it a bunch digitally, but I really loved seeing it in the theater. And I can't wait. Similar movies, too. Yes, yeah, very totally. Yeah, I love the on-theme trailer placement there. So we are going to watch the trailer. But I want to let you guys cue it up, just talk a little bit about the movie.

And then we can chat a little more after the trailer. Yeah, okay. It is a recovery story set in Central Ohio, which is where I'm from originally. It stars Will Poulter and Noah Centineo as foster brothers who are sort of navigating different stages of recovery through this county mandated drug court program. It's an expansion of a short that Sean and I made seven years ago. And we've been kind of chipping away at this thing since then. And, yeah, premiered at Sundance this past January coming out in theaters in August. And I'm really excited to start getting out there with the movie. Yes, all right. So I think that's a good tee up. And let's see, speaking of teeing up, we'll get it ready here. And we'll watch this beautifully cut trailer, by the way, and wrap with you guys afterwards.

Here we go. This is the new trailer for Union County. I'm Cody and I'm an addict. I've been addicted to opiate since I was 17. and I'm part of the adult recovery court program, and so I'm here. So the basic rules are to abstain from drugs and alcohol, attend the court sessions and appointments,

and to submit to drug and alcohol testing. Familiar with these? Bathrooms at the end of the hall. We're right behind you. We treat everyone on a case-by-case basis. There's no rubric, but back to jail is always an option. Okay. You see the guy over there making up with that girl?

That's my brother. That's my friend, Kim. Sorry about that. Go for it. Do you need anything? Is there anything you can do to help you? No. Are you sure?

Yeah, I'm sure. I think that there's just a lot that I cannot understand. No, I don't either. But I want to tell you that I'm sorry. Don't be so great. Our stories might not be the same, but they're still similar. I'm sure we've all had the shame and the guilt. I didn't do anything.

He's going to put the cuffs on you. I'm going to do everything I can for you and for Jack to help you guys get through this. They said, as long as my background check comes about good, I'm good to start working there. Keep working hard. Get yourself from good people. Like you said, it's people, places, and things. When you're in this program, Cody, you have to comply with the rules. So what's it going to be?

Hell, yeah, you guys. Oh, my goodness gracious. Yeah, I said it at the top, but I did see this when it was at Sundance, virtually rented it. I did not trek out there with you guys. But Sean, you know, I don't know, talk about a little bit about your journey with this, like bringing it from the short that you guys made all those years ago to like premiering this sucker at Sundance, man. Yeah. It was crazy.

I mean, so Adam and I met probably like 2018 or so, 2017, 2018. I do a lot of like filmmaker development work, and Adam had applied to the program and pitched this short. And so we made the short together the first of that year. And that film went off to Berlin Alley, which is this sort of great, one of the great European festivals and played there. And then he just like kept out it for years and years, expanding it out to the feature.

And slowly over the years, we kind of built together a producer team. And then I would say two or so years ago, you know, comes like the big moment of casting and then bringing the money together and being able to really go for it. So not this past spring, but the spring before. We were all in Bell Fountain, Ohio, shooting this movie for the better, you know, shooting it for a month and out there for, you know, about seven or eight weeks.

It was incredible. And yeah, and to your point, Andrew, like, we were really lucky to have our premiere, and now Sundance will no longer be in Park City. It was the last one in Park City, but also in the Eccles Theater, which is the most massive theater you could ever imagine. And so to kind of play to all those folks, and we'll talk, I'm sure, a little bit about the film. But Annette in the film is also the woman who's been kind of running this program for decades. and decades. And she, uh, when she came out on stage after the movie, it was just like,

variety called it an extended standing ovation. And it was for, you know, like, Will's already on stage. And he's like, what the hell? No. I mean, like, you know, it's like, people knew the, the heart of the, you know, in the sun, our solar system was in that. And it was just, like, incredible to see her, receive her, her flowers in that space. Yeah. No, that was, that was captured on the Q&A that they put into the digital package. So I didn't get to see that, which was I had a question. I know that obviously Will and Noah are really exciting young actors that are kind of breaking through in a lot of different ways. But a lot of at least what, and again, I can't wait to see it.

I have tickets already for the IFC. If you haven't, check that out. I know I could tell that, you know, and I know that non-actors are such an important part of this movie. You know what I mean? A lot of, you know, quote-to-quote non-actors are populating. You can really see it in the trailer. You can hear those accents. Those are not fake accents.

Correct. Is that, like, how important was that to the development of it? And how, like, you know, how did that play in with the movie itself? Yeah, it kind of started with that concept in mind, actually. It was sort of like, how do I, the first question in my own mind after I started sitting in on these drug court meetings was how do I translate this feeling and this community to the screen. And then it sort of expanded from this real place into this ultimately fixed. narrative that incorporates this real place and the people who inhabit it. So it was a part of the idea and the design of the movie from the start.

And then it was really exciting to be able to say what happens if we leave Will Poulter and Noah Centeno through this program and within this community. And what I hoped it would do, and I think, you know, I think we did is that it, It empowers the folks in the program in terms of the kind of, you know, elevating everybody up to the same level of actor and with their own level of investment

and kind of responsibility and role in the film. And then it, and it sort of like allows everybody to share their own stories, you know, and represent themselves. And then it also, I, you know, Will and Noah would say, and we observe this a lot, it's really hard to like, you know, bullshit as a performer if you're in the real room surrounded by the most authentic version of what you're doing.

And so I think it's sort of like hopefully brought out the best, you know, of everybody. And it was really exciting and, like, moving to watch every day. Yeah, and like credit to Will and Noah who came out way ahead of the shoot and got to know folks in the court and got to know folks from the community. Adam had, like, built over years this relationship with this community. So, like, when we'd go out, we'd attend meetings, we'd hang out with folks. I mean, there was, like, a there was, like, a camaraderie there. And it was cool that these two actors who are much more famous than Adam or I were also down for that

and to see them, like, really connecting with folks and, like, joking. I'm remembering one moment outside the courthouse where someone, one of the guys went up to Willen was like, hey, you were in the, we're the millers. It's like, yeah. And he goes, well, my last name's Miller. So guess I'm more of a Miller than you. You got that right, buddy. I love that.

Yes. But it was like, you sort of think of making a film in this place where films often aren't made. And it was like, it was incredible. I mean, like, the community was so welcoming. And like, yeah, folks kind of got along. We went bowling. Like, everybody went bowling together. And it was like the vibes were good.

Bowling, man, the great cultural unifier. Every time. I mean, I think it's overdue for like a actual intimate version of this story. Because like my dad specializes in addiction. That was the thing that he always studied as in social work. And he teaches that a lot. And it's funny, he's been sending me all these articles because I don't know if everybody's been paying attention.

But the last two months essentially, they've been, they scheduled 7-0-H as a schedule 1 narcotics. So they're getting rid of it. And smoke shops have been like coasting off of this for years now. And it is,

that stuff is literally just opioids that you can buy over the counter. It's not different at all. And I've just been shocked to see that there's been no talk about this until very recent. I talked to my smoke shop guys about it. But like an actual story of like how hard it is now to just keep clean is,

I think exactly what we need. Yeah. Thanks for saying that. I mean, that's why we, that's why we made it. I would say that's what kept, you know, keeps you going over the time it takes to make something as like a continued belief in, you know, the importance, the value of the thing you're doing.

And unfortunately, it has remained, you know, relevant and to continue to feel important to us. So hopefully, I don't know, I hope, I have always just sort of, like, hoped that it can demonstrate a path forward for people who need to see that as a possibility. Yeah. For sure. For sure.

I'm up. I'm up. Sean and I together are working on a kind of contemporary Western that is set in this part of Montana where I spent a lot of my upbringing. And, yeah, it's kind of a sort of what neo-noir western set in Montana that we're looking forward to. Yes. Yes. Very cool.

fun. Very cool, man. Yeah, I think that IGN quote that is in the trailer is very much representative of what it feels like to watch this movie, which is to say watching an independent film and getting a feeling that you haven't felt with a lot of stuff going on over the last few years in film culture. So there's a, there's a real sort of, there's a look and feel to this movie that feels very fresh and also very comforting at the same time, if that makes any sense. It was like, it's a, you know, beautiful, tough movie, and it was really refreshing to just take that in and take in a new kind of story in a nice original way. Yeah. Boy, talk about it. Let's talk about it. I think everybody but Eric saw this. So Eric, congratulations on Dodgers. Smart man. Live your whole life. There are three good Evil Dead movies. And every single one after that has driven me up the wall.

So I didn't run out to see this. Smart move. Yes. You will see very shortly on our Scarity Cats episode. I really like Evil Dead Rise. I don't love it, but compared to these guys, I fucking love it. This was such a downturn from even that movie, which is not fantastic.

This sucks dog shit. Why does it suck, you guys? Because I'm especially interested in why Steve dislikes it because I didn't find stuff redeemable about the last two. So what specifically, what's the diversion here? I think that the evil dead rise at least has a little bit of the sensibility of evil dead in sort of like over the top violence that it has a little tinge of humor to it. Like I certainly could tinge more in the humor direction.

That would be a critique of mine of that movie. Sure. And like kind of cool character monster design like and like overall trying to be kind of a cool horror movie. You know what I mean? I think that that evil dead rise wants to be a cool horror movie. this wants to rub your shit nose into domestic violence and fuck this movie it is so wrongheaded with the domestic violence stuff

I cannot even begin it's a deplorable movie for that reason it thinks it does the deadite do it no the deadites actually I mean the dead eyes I don't know if I'd go that far it is a movie that is trying to use the horror situation that they're encountering here

as this sort of metaphor for a larger this is a similar horrific feeling when domestic violence is afoot and like it just falls flat on its face like it is a clear case of a movie thinking with its whole ass that it's saying something. Yes.

And it's saying absolutely nothing at all as it turns out. And you are just forced to sit there and watch like brutality after brutality after brutality and I guess it makes you think it thinks it's making you think like oh gee, you know, I think that fucking domestic violence is kind of bad. Hmm.

It might be bad. And it's just, you're just not watching any of that. Also, like, the fucking father, who's one of the abusive characters in the movie, like, turns dead-eyed and just fucking stabs a dog in the throat for no reason. Like, it's a real, and I know I'm like dog guy and whatever, but like, it is a real, like, what the fuck was that for? I get that he's an asshole. It's, I mean, it's, it's, to do exactly what Steve says, to rub your nose in it. It's to make you feel bad. Like, this is the feel bad version of evil dead.

And, like, I also have heard, and I get what they mean. French extremity stuff. Yeah. I have seen a good amount of French extremity movies. Some of them I really do not like. All of them are better than this. Every single one of them is better than this. And I will say I agree with Steve on what.

Evil Dead Rise has some filmmaking behind it. I feel like the people making it enjoyed themselves. Yeah. Like you can feel that. There's some love for the thing in the direction of it. This is just like, fuck you. How about that shit? And that's it.

If I could find anything good to say about this, I think some of the horror action sequences are quite exciting. If you can be, are filmed competently and interestingly, like a lot of long take kind of stuff. I was like, okay, this is like something to be fair. But again,

like, I just feel like there's a difference between putting Ash to the ringer, who's kind of a fun hymbo guy that is a, trying to do an intrepid hero that needs to learn he's an intrepid hero, or I didn't see the remake, or, you know, the family of the, last one and like that woman needs to sort of figure out her shit and she does so by this is just taking

a domestic violence survivor and like really putting her through the ringer for no real reason like she doesn't grow she doesn't learn anything she's not a hero she's like crying and again because the french extremity she's crying the whole time she's crawling on the ground writhing and it's like this is not it folks i don't know what it is any fire what's the burn the uh the dude gets burned in the beginning and then he's like a charred. The lead dead-eyed, I guess, the charred guy. Oh, that's kind of cool. Yeah.

There's also other various fires set throughout the film, I guess. But the other thing is like, and you know, I complain about this on our Scarity Cats episode as well, but with with no idea of where I was about to go seeing this movie. But like, I said this to you after I saw it, Steve or after you saw it and I could talk about it without spoiling it. But like, this is a franchise where like, it's famous. for a guy comically fighting his own hand. Yes.

Why we think it's appropriate in this franchise to then take that towards, we're going to do this brutal as shit to address domestic violence. This is not, it's neither the time nor the place evil, man, I'll tell you right now. It's really,

really fucking not. And if we could get the social messaging and the fucking trauma out of this franchise, I agree. The better these movies will be for it. I don't know why we can't just make a fun one. Honestly, look, we've done it. I think that, you know, like, and again, like, leak, I've never missed Lee Croton more. Honestly, like, I just, me either in turn. Yeah, it's true. It's sad to say. I think, you know what? I honestly think the Ash thing is, because, hey, as I said, if you do it now, you're going to get Glenn Powell and it's not going to be good. And I just know that in my heart. Yeah, but like terrible, yes. Whoever you were going, even if it wasn't Glenn Powell, whoever you were going to get for Ash, everybody would lose their shit. And, they fuck you. That's it. Like, we would like it.

You also don't even need to just do ash again. You can just have some levity in your horror movie. A lot of horror movies have moments of humor in them. I mean, obsession was kind of funny. Yeah, yes. Backroom's awesome. It's a darkest hell movie. It's really fucking funny.

And backrooms is funny also. Yeah, I just don't understand, especially to make it this franchise, which is known for being funny. Like, you could even honestly, like, you'd be probably closer to the, market would still suck to make a full-on comedy evil dead like you know what i mean with like less than the horror army of darbord and lord and miller yeah lord and miller evil dead would be better than this one for sure yeah did we mention yeah evil dead rise full video podcast episode coming to the

patreon in just a matter of days love that just a matter of days you will be able to get this sucker um yeah no it's what's the other thing i was going to say about it something something oh the other thing is It's going this hard, extreme route and whatever. And it doesn't even have the confidence in itself to think that you will watch that and that will be enough for you because it has the audacity to, in the second of two stingers, good God, tie this movie back to evil dead rise in the biggest go fuck yourself way I've ever seen. And also because it's this movie, it has to have the most brutal kill of the entire movie in a second stinger scene. and you've got to be like, I just was like, you've got to be fucking kidding me.

It's absolutely nuts. You know, the funny thing is, and I know a lot of people in the chat are probably thinking it, will this be a January title? I don't know, because that would mean

three of us would have to watch it again. I don't want to. We will see. Stranger things have happened. I also don't even get this agro about movies anymore. Like I fucking hate, but really the domestic violence stuff really bugged me. And I just think it's fair to be like,

fuck this movie. Very often I'm like, well, a lot of people work. Fuck this movie. Sorry. Fuck this movie. 100% like this movie.

A lot of people should have worked on a different movie. A lot of people worked on this other movie, including a lot of real people, not a lot of computer extras in The Odyssey. The Chris Nolan latest adventure flick that's out doing Buku Buckew Bucks, as we've discussed. I have yet to see it in its true form, 70mm IMAX at Lincoln Square, because it's daggum impossible to do so. But caught it up on 84th Street. AMC and just watched it on DCP like a plebe. And I still really, really love this movie. Oh, yeah.

I saw this in LA. I saw the Chinese theater on 70 millimeter IMAX. And it knocked my goddamn socks off. It really, and maybe that's what made this like a five-star letterboxed affair for me. But it's really everything I want from a blockbuster. It is, it's got incredible sequences and it's got, you know, great characters. It's memorable. you care about the outcome of scenes.

You know what I mean? It's kind of everything I was looking for with Disclosure Day, but actually like this is like burned by nose hairs. You know what? I don't get though. Like not even not even the right wing controversy. Yeah. But now people are coming out of the woodwork being like the,

but Homer like oh, like all you guys really sitting around reading the Odyssey every day and this is you're offended that this was dead on accurate to the actual poem. Well, yeah, that's ridiculous. I mean, to say that you wanted the whole thing to be. is obscene. Like, I get the people who are like, like, Homer is a much more interesting character in the poem. But I think this version of him

is just okay. I think it's a very good version of it. I think Matt Damon does a great job with this hero. He's more of a heroic character in this. And like that's, I think any time you do something like this, you're going to get the adaptation heads out and they're going to start screaming no matter what. That's just what's going to happen.

People love the nobody line from the original source material and it's fun. But like, I feel like you start doing those quippy things. Like he becomes a lovable rogue, which is not the point of what Nolan was trying to do. But also Nolan's fine with quips. Like he's funny guy. Like if you actually like watch his movies,

I rewatched the Dark Night after watching this. And I'm like, there's plenty of jokes here. I don't know what anybody's talking about. There's jokes in the Odyssey too. I mean, you know, there's other jokes that totally were.

But he's always been that way. If you start, you know, if this is like, ha ha ha, who ha. Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He turns into John McLean.

This is like, this is, you know, like a, it's an epic poem from like really like a before recorded history kind of a situation. Like, I just don't think that. It's also fake, right? It's a fictional story. Yes. Yeah. This didn't happen. I'm sorry.

Wait. And I think, I mean, my wife is much more, Jen is much more versed on this stuff than I am. She read the Emily Wilson translation. I'm an idiot. I haven't yet. And like, she really enjoyed. this and I think that like there is something to be said like there isn't really a big budget odyssey that has ever existed in terms in American film you know what I mean like the

closest you've got is that Armand de Sante mini series which I did see as a kid is that right yeah it's really stupid he's fucking everybody in that one it's pretty cool I like that but I was just going to come in with it with a comment on a thing in the chat here just sort of pull this up Denzel played an actual white Roman emperor surrogate and Gladiator 2 and the complaint was barely a blip. This isn't really just about race, unfortunately. Well, it's largely about race for a lot of those people, a friend. The difference is nobody fucking gave a shit and barely anyone saw Gladiator 2. That is the big, big difference we have to keep in mind here.

Well, it's also, you know, Steve's favorite site, X always stokes the flame with the gender issues as well. Yes, of course. I don't care if it's not accurate. God, Robert Pattinson, fantastic little wormy guy. Oh my God. Worm of the year, dude. Absolutely. Patenton's scene stealing. I really loved,

I kind of love like what Nolan does now with his sort of like, it's like an intern program like Matt Damon come and be an interstellar a little bit. Yep. And then okay, we'll have you, give you a big role in Oppenheimer but you're not the lead and now here's your movie. For the longest time, Killian Murphy,

you could be Scarecrow a little bit here. Like it's just I kind of like this idea of the Nolan thing. And I think honestly the next person I would like to see get it would be like Anne Hathaway. She's so good in this and she's kind of an interstellar and Dark Trenzis. But yeah, she's on the steps now. So she's making her way.

Maybe it's a full on Anne Hathaway. Maybe it's a full on man has to way whatever. There's always a critique of like how Nolan doesn't necessarily know women and doesn't really write for women that well and I'm like sure but then I wonder like do you want to see him try that if he's not good at it?

Also a great question. I mean I don't know. I get that way back when like the Incept all the dead wife stuff is where I understand that. But he's gotten better like literally the last three movies the characters he's been right the female characters he's been writing have been so much more

like and not just through the performance I think in the writing itself have just been more substantive like Emily Blunt and Opie is fantastic. Oh it's Florence Pugue as well like I like Opie and Tenet more than this but this is to me right on the level of

the dark night like this I was entertained I was satisfied the whole time there are certain sequences the back to back Circe into Hades sequences are just two of the best things he's ever done it's just like incredible of what he did with those scenes I need to rewind it you know I feel like only seeing it once is not almost not seeing it the

the surce scene my jaw was on the floor I'm like is he doing this now I'm like yeah that's awesome can I tell you because I'm such a fucking uncultured swine pun intended um like I knew bits and bobs about this story but I never like read it I never saw the Armand de Santi adaptation so I didn't know like where things were placed and whatever I had never heard of this the Circe pig scene and I'm sitting there like this is one of the greatest things I've ever seen in my life. This is a great fucking sequence. There was talk about him maybe

trying horror next and I think that would be a great move. Yeah. The Cyclops seem terrifying. And the fact that that's like almost all practical is nuts. Yeah, Bill Irwin playing the Cyclops. How cool is that? It's so cool. I mean, and that's sort of where I was getting. I was like, I think no one did the

exact job you want to do with an adaptation. Adaptation taking it somewhere. Right. Which is, it sits on the shelf as a really good example. of what this story is, you know what I mean? Not end to end or perfectly, like shot for shot, which is boring, you know what I mean? And introduces people who haven't read it or haven't,

you know what I mean, are just unfamiliar, which I believe is 90% of the populace that are just going to blow their fucking head off. Like, holy shit, this happens in the story. And he makes his own thing. You know what I mean? By adding the idea of Odysseus, you know, using the sack of Troy as a thing,

you know, sort of the end of an era, like very much Oppenheimer. and all that top. Yes. A couple other folks to shout out. Himmesh Patel fucking awesome in this movie. He is fucking ready for the big time. Like I've seen this dude in like

a couple movies here and there. And he's so goddamn good in this movie. Leguizamo I think is MVP. I've never seen John LeguZamo better than this movie. And Elliot Page fucking rocked for the little that he was in the movie. These fucking transphobes

flipping their fucking gourd over the shit. Like, my dude's barely in the fucking movie, but what he's in is, is fucking great. And like, you know, why don't you stop acting like a fucking child? Get a life. It's awesome for Nolan. Again, you know, is it political or is it not? It's really cool that Nolan worked with him in Inception and is like, I, this is me supporting you post-transition.

Like, this is a really cool role for you. You know what I mean? It's a neat thing that I, to watch directors do for their, for their casts. Yeah. And also, I will even say this. This is how much better this movie is than the last one we talked about. The dog stuff in this movie, tough but manageable and services the story. Would you imagine that?

It services the story. Give it to Nolan. He made me laugh at a dog death. When Lech was on was just, whoop, dude. It is such a casual toss that even me, Mr. Dog, was like, come on. That's fucking funny. I was also hooting and hollering. when they put the old dog on the dung heap.

I also, speaking of the dog, I love Corey Hawkins as, I don't know that name of one of Biff's secondhand guys, but he's kind of that to- Oh, you can do 3D. He's the 3-D. He's the 3-D of the group of suitors, which, and he does a great, he's an actor that's done much more than that. And that's what I love when people are just like, I'll be the fucking 3-D here, you know what I mean?

I'll just, I'll be like, I'll add color to this. scene and he really does. And you could say like this is Corey Hawkins. I think this is his first go around with Nolan. Maybe he's also, this is his first movie in the internship program. I've put my time in here. Yeah, exactly. It's good to see

him and Logan Marshall Green be like, I would like to work up here. Can I get to a supporting role next? Logan Marshall Green, a real blink and you miss it. But then it's just awesome. He's a great actor that's just adding some nice character to everything. With the, and patents it again to go back.

talking about the suitors. The beggars line is very, very funny. Yes. But so, which is harder to meme, but him, when all the, the weapons are going to have, like, hiding in the corner, be like, get the swords, get the swords, get the swords, hiding in the corner, get the shields, get the shields. Yeah. And he's, like, not doing anything.

It's an incredible, it reminds me so much of, like, assholes like Stallone and Vin Diesel and Dwayne and Dwayne Johnson, like, if I'm in a fight seat, I need to win that fight. Like, then you're not acting. You know what I mean? You need to writhe on your belly like a worm, like Robert Pattinson. Sometimes. Sometimes. Not all the time.

Sometimes. I mean, even that, I was connecting it directly. The Joker does the exact same thing at the Dutth Dense fundraiser. He's throwing these guys like, go,

the year. Top three definitely. Also, we got to say it because his new new movie is coming out in just a few short days from now. And we give him a lot of guff on this show, but I thought Tom Holland was excellent in this movie. He was. I think that

it was, like, even Bernthal, his scenes with Bernthal, I really liked. Yes. And his scenes with Likazamo, I just like, he's, he's like a hair too old. I think that he's said publicly this is his last boy, performance, which I'm happy for for him. But at the same time, he does it so well.

He does. Yeah, he does. That I, you know, I think I have a, when he tries to be an adult, I'm like, no, you're, you're a 30 year old baby to me. But, you know, I wish him the best. We do, we gave him hell a little bit, but, yeah, he was totally good here. He's perfect for the character. I mean, like, that's what the character is supposed to be. It's supposed to be someone who's not ready to lead, whereas the son of Agamon son is, that's the one thing. I kind of wish they had Agamemnon's son because he's exactly like Telemachus, but he is ready to lead,

and I thought that would be a nice mirror. But, like, he does so well with this role. And it seems with Hathaway are fucking fantastic. She's very good, too. Yeah, I mean, oh,

you're just going back and forth. And again, like, you know, look, it is a thing of, like, who is going to win this scene

and not win in a fucking sports way, but like, you know what I mean? Like, yeah. Really, like, what is the idea we're going to get across here? And they, they play together perfectly.

Like, he really sells what she's doing. in a really great way. Isn't it crazy that Tom Holland and John Bernthal are both in Spider-Man as well? They're going to be like the kings of the summer now. Dude, it took me a second. This will be the second of two movies that Robert Pattinson and Zendaya have out this year, this calendar year.

That's right. The drama of this and then and then and then Dune. By the way, on 70mm the clip of Dune that's that they added to that. Look out Dune. D, you're cooked. That's all I'm going to say. Wow. Fascinating.

Someone, Bucyrus, pointing out, yeah, Zendaya also really great. And I love how they did that part. Like, they didn't hide from the gods, but they added, he added a really interesting way of, like, how the gods might present themselves on Earth.

I think it's really neat. Yes. It's the way the poem did it. I don't know. The poem is still there. You can read the poem. It's really good. That is a work of art.

And yes, one of the first works of art. And this is an interpretation, an adaptation. They also didn't speak with American accents back then. You got to let go a little bit and have fun at the movies. Yeah, I don't think it's just like, fuck it, let's go home. I don't think that's what Homer was actually, you know,

that wasn't the actual language, I don't think. That would be really funny if just Matt Damon turns to the camera. Fuck it, let's go home. Yeah, so I can't wait to see it again. Just to see them together, even, I'm dying to see this. Gillian Anderson having this kind of role, I mean, as an old exfiles had, just seeing her get this kind of work is just, it thrills me to know. Yeah. I was at a screening of the invite in Williamsburg and this very annoying couple that I had to shush later on in the film. Excellent. Love when you have to do that shit. Burrough, perhaps? I will never forget, when I saw the TV glow, a phenomenal film. The couple behind me, like right at the last sequence that's happening, the girlfriend behind me, audibly said, I can't be here anymore.

Oh, yeah. It's just like, took the boyfriend by the hand. Wow. I'm like, it's a strong, I get it, it's a strong emotional sequence. It is a lot to take, but I think very much worth it. And I just laugh all the time thinking about that.

that is very funny yeah no i've i've liked jane's last two movies i think i might be the only one that like we're all going to the world's fair better uh because i was just it was one of those i didn't see i saw the tv glow right away and was just inundated with yes it's the best movie ever it's the best movie ever if you like buffy it's the best movie ever and i was like well i liked buffy i guess it's the best movie ever and it's a good movie yeah uh i just thought i saw the tv glow uh or um We're all going to the world's fairs. I'm one of the people that said it was the best movie ever, so I'm sorry for that.

And bringing something like that to a Green Lantern story would be really interesting, which is sort of saying like, hey, it's a comic book thing. I'm very excited to see how like we're just doing stuff somewhere in a valley. somewhere out west goes because I think that would be really cool. all that shit is there. But oh man, I really do love Kyle Chandler's line there. They're like, you're not, you know, you're not training your fucking backup, training my replacement. Which is just that's a fucking Kyle Chandler role that he can hit a grand slam with.

So I'm very excited to this. I'm very, very excited to see the yellow lantern king. I think that's going to be a good character. Yep. Okay. And it looks like there's a good amount of violence. So I'm excited to see a dumb action movie in the late summer. I will say I'm a little disappointed in everyone because it's from the director of plane. This movie should be called boat and how dare you? Please. You're totally right. I've got a boat. I finally caught up on plane and it was a bit too plain for me. I didn't really like it that much. Plain's not very good. But yeah. Yeah. But this looks exciting. It's chasing. It's chasing. I'm killing people. That's what I want. Steve and I did have the best experience with Plain, though. Didn't we see it together?

Did I see it separately? No, we saw it. Right? Yeah. We saw it together. In theaters, hootin and hollering, that is the way to see Plain, even though it is indeed a little, a little plain when you get through it. But I'm excited for that.

I'm also excited for the next thing coming out here at the ass end of the summer. It was something that the rights holders and distributors thought was worth throwing in the fucking garbage and never letting any of us see it. Yes, that's right. Coyote versus Ack. me coming out 828. They tried to fucking back girl this movie. They tried to back girl this movie.

And instead, ketchup entertainment came along and said, you know what, Warner Brothers, we'll do all the heavy lifting for you to put this great looking fucking movie out. What a disaster that company is. Outbid mustard for that. That's right. Yeah, the spicy mustard collective. They should get a special thing with rotten tomatoes.

Like, you should go a little easier on ketchup. It's a condo. That's right. Well, ketchup entertainment has to get big enough that they can buy rotten tomatoes and then they can sort of,

you know, shush their own numbers a little bit. But I watched the trailer for this finally, and it is like Roger Rabbit kind of humans interacting with cartoons. They're not smoothed over CGI monstrosities. There's a little bit of grain, a little bit of grit to the animation of the Looney Tunes.

I love that. I'm really excited for this movie. And Will Forte, my God. Yeah. I love Will Forte. John Cena's the bad guy. John Cena, you know, interacting with Looney Tunes, perfect. And the whole idea of the movie is really funny. It's like Will Forte is a shady lawyer who the coyote sees a commercial.

Like, have you been fucked over by Acme's faulty products? Let's sue them. And that's the movie is suing Acme for all those shitty products that have fucked him over in all of those hilarious shorts. And I just think that's a great idea for a movie. So they just were going to throw it in the fucking. garbage these people. My God in heaven. But that is going to do it, folks.
