Starting point is 00:00:00 The following podcast is a dear media production. This is Well, a podcast about wellness in all its forms. I'm Ariel Laurie, and each week I'm sharing unfiltered conversations with people shaping how we feel, live, and look. Come for the substance, stay for the honesty, and leave with the tools to be well, inside and out. If you're like me and you've been looking at red carpets and wondering how celebrities' hair looks so good and wondering why your hair doesn't look like that,
Starting point is 00:00:34 Or you see celebrities changing their hairstyles like chameleons and you're wondering how they find the right shape for their face. Today you're going to find out because I am talking to Mara Rozak. She's a celebrity hairstylist and she's also the founder of the hair care brand that I'm obsessed with called Rose. And she is the stylist behind a lot of your favorite celebrities and their iconic looks. Thank Emma Stone and her pixie cut, Rose Byrne, Zoe Saldanya, Olivia Wilde, Lily Collins, honestly, so many of the It girls. And we had such a blast talking all things here. What I loved about this conversation is that we go way beyond typical hair advice. She shares so many tips that I had never heard before, things that we are all doing that might actually be damaging our hair, why your brush might be sabotaging you. and the biggest myths about growing long healthy hair.
Starting point is 00:01:29 And we also, of course, get into some behind the scenes celebrity hair moments. What really goes into red carpet styling, how stylists decide the perfect cut or shape for somebody's face. So if you care about your hair at all, whether you're trying to grow it longer, just keep it healthy. Maybe you want it to look better day to day. You're thinking about a cut, but you're not sure about it. There are so many little tricks in this episode that are going to make such a huge difference for you. and it's just fun girl chat. So let's get into it with Mara Rozac.
Starting point is 00:01:59 Okay, so I also like to start with just some kind of rapid fire lightning round questions. My big one is what is the biggest hair myth that you wish would die? I honestly wish chopping your hair after a certain age would die. I look back and granted I do think previous decades like you look at the 80s and earlier, everyone looks so, like my grandmother was probably like 30. You think about the Golden Girls and they were in their 40s. They looked like they were 80 because of that hair. So I really think this idea and I see a lot of women in my chair at the salon and over maybe 60,
Starting point is 00:02:41 you start to think I have to cut my hair short. And it's just not true. So I would really love that to die. I was listening to you on Breaking Beauty and I think you said something about the bob as well. It's a big swing and some of your clients have done it successfully. Yeah. Yeah. But not everybody should be jumping into the bob, right?
Starting point is 00:03:00 Yeah. I think it's really about the hair type and texture that you have and also your lifestyle. If you're a woman who is willing to blow dry your hair every day, if you have any kind of frizz or if you have like textured hair, right? Like curlier or even thicker, wavy hair. That can be really hard with a bob. But if you're willing to like put in the time and give your. yourself that blowout or go to the salon once a week and get it. I am so all for it. I truly think a Bob looks chic on everyone. It's just a matter of do you have the hair type to really
Starting point is 00:03:35 handle it? And are you someone who's going to style it? Unless you have hair like Emma Stone and then you can wash and go. If she's listening to this, she'll be like, I don't wash and go. But she does. Send it to her. Exactly. So it totally depends on the type of. of hair and your level of commitment and time. I feel like so many people go to it because they're like, oh, less hair, less maintenance. And it's the opposite. Totally the opposite. It's so chic.
Starting point is 00:04:05 So it is this like immediate style without having to style. But the reality is it requires a bit of a blowout. Yeah. Yeah. I have very old extensions in right now. And my hair is all different lengths. And I actually texted my, the guy who cuts my hair, Danny. And I was like, can I come today and can we cut it short?
Starting point is 00:04:24 Because we're putting new extensions in on Friday anyway. And I'm like, this is the perfect time to test if I actually want to because I think about it all the time. And then I think about like exactly what you were saying. Not that I would go like golden girls short. No. But I'm like I feel like I could look kind of like stalker mom. I'm not sure. I think a bob would be so chic on you.
Starting point is 00:04:45 I don't think I could do like a full bob. But I think maybe like here. Yes. I don't know. I love a color bow. Yeah, there's some really great Gwyneth references from like back in the day. That would be really good for you. Really?
Starting point is 00:05:01 Yeah, I'll send them to you after. Oh, my God. I'm dying to know. I'm going to come in and see Danny with all these pictures. It's going to be like, what? Where'd you got to be? Is cutting your hair more actually the key to growth? No.
Starting point is 00:05:14 Say more. Yes. So unless your hair is breaking, which happens if you're not cutting, it, right? Or you're bleaching and you're blow-drying, heat styling, and you're not giving trims or taking care of your hair. It's very possible that your ends are breaking, which then inevitably makes your hair sort of shorter. And yes, you'd be better off getting these little micro-trims to make sure that your dead ends are not then just breaking off, which you can't control and is probably way more than you would cut. So it does not lead to more growth. However,
Starting point is 00:05:51 it keeps your hair overall healthier preventing that breakage that is somewhat inevitable. We'll get to, but I don't come in here very often. You have the most amazing hair, by the way. Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. It's very thick, but it's kind of a pain. I have a lot of it. It's really frizzy.
Starting point is 00:06:11 It's coarse. We'll talk more about that. But it looks like I have great hair, but it's like not great hair. But it can look great. But I am a believer if you're someone who's trying to grow your hair out. do not cut it often. Like try to avoid getting cuts more than every like three to four months. Oh.
Starting point is 00:06:28 Because it's just going to, you're never going to get there. Okay. We'll circle back on that one. Great. Is air drying always better than heat styling when it comes to hair health? Yes, when it comes to hair health for sure. However, I'm someone that like loves a blowout and I will wear my blowout for like three straight days or maybe four if I can push it.
Starting point is 00:06:49 And so you're not, if you're doing it once or twice a week and you're using great products that are helping prevent damage, like heat protectants, smoothers that help that blowdray process go faster and to create a protective layer, then I think you're fine. But doing nothing is like always going to be better. It's funny because I've seen some people on TikTok, which we already know is not going to be the most reliable. Yeah. But some people are like, no, actually your hair can break more easily when it's wet. So you have to be careful about what you're doing if you're letting it air dry and how you're brushing it and all of that. Yeah. Brushing is like definitely a controversial thing apparently. I like did a post recently where I was like, here are some hair resolutions or hair habits I want people to break. One is like brushing hair dry. And I had a lot of comments like, wait, what? I heard it was like so much more damaging to brush your hair when wet. And the answer really is no. I think brushing hair dry can be worse. It's like more brittle.
Starting point is 00:07:54 If you're, you have knots, your kind of day. You can like literally see the hair flying. Yes, your hair's more elasticy when it's wet. You can feel that. But if you're coating it, first of all, the water itself is coating it and filling the cuticle. But I always want like a detangler or conditioner. Ideally, you're only brushing your hair with conditioner on and rinsing it. And then maybe you have to just brush a tiny bit.
Starting point is 00:08:16 you're not really detangling. The detangling happened when you're in the shower. So ideally you're coating it with Rose makes a milk hair serum, which is perfect for that. It's very, very lightly. Really like all hair types can use it. And it's just beautiful to have something protective on the hair before brushing it. But I much prefer that to happen on wet or damp hair rather than dry. Is there such thing as a wet brush? Because I have a wet brush and I feel like I'm being good by using it on wet hair. But I'm like, is this really even different? from a regular brush. I know. I have wet brush too. And it's funny because I think I always associated just like wet brush means like the brush can get wet. Oh. Wait, did I use it wrong?
Starting point is 00:08:58 No, I think actually that's like my own brain like not making sense because I have put like wooden brushes in the shower and I'm like, oh, this is like not a wet. You're right. It is like it's all plastic. No, I think wet brushes are great. My favorite, favorite brush that like everybody needs. needs to have is the Sheila stocks. It's actually made for extensions. It's a metal bristle, but it is a plastic brush. They also make it in wood, but it wouldn't be considered wet. Appropriate. But I, it's the best. And like, literally my six-year-old son is like, do you have the brush, mommy, if you have to brush my hair, like, do you have the brush? I'm like, okay, I'll go find it. It's the best. And everybody needs to have it. Okay. Yeah. For everybody
Starting point is 00:09:43 listening, we'll do a roundup at the end of this episode. We'll go through. and post everything on the podcast Instagram so that they can reference it. Great. This brush needs to sell out. It's just there's no brush like it. Yeah, you definitely would. It's a cream. It has like an S on it.
Starting point is 00:10:01 Oh, maybe not. Okay. I think we sell it at the salon. Okay. I have pretty much everything that you sell at the salon. That's where I get myself in trouble waiting to pay. I'm like, oh, I'll take everything on the wall. Every hairdresser is like, I think, favorite.
Starting point is 00:10:16 brush. Okay. We'll do one more. What styling mistake causes the most long-term damage? Honestly, I think not using the right products. I do think that people are generally confused about how to use product, and I totally get it. It is overwhelming. There are so many products out there, and hair isn't maybe as intuitive as, like, makeup, you feel like you've learned how to, like, apply blush. I think hair in general is like a little bit harder for the everyday kind of woman to understand how to do their hair. But I would say like investing in good products that your stylist tells you to use or maybe maybe TikTok, although we'll get to that. My whole TikTok is Abby Young. Do you know?
Starting point is 00:11:05 It's literally what I wanted to get to because I feel I have so many questions and I feel like it's very controversial. Yeah. There are so many silicones. I'm like, like harsh chemicals and surfactants in those products, over time buildup. Yeah, I have a lot of questions. Okay. And I'm very curious about it. Okay. We'll bookmark that one as well. One of the things that I talk about a lot on the show is gut health. And something that's really interesting is that most things people take for their gut are only addressing one small piece of the puzzle. Your gut lining is actually this incredibly important barrier system. And when it's compromised, it can affect everything from digestion to immune health to how you feel overall,
Starting point is 00:11:51 which is one of the reasons that I started taking Armour Colostrum a few years ago now. It is a bioactive whole food that works at the cellular level and contains over 400 bioactive nutrients that helps strengthen your body's natural barriers, including the gut lining. So a lot of people just think about probiotics when they think about gut health, but those are really just addressing one part of the gut wall. What Armour does is it helps to fortify the entire. gut wall system, nourishing your microbiome, while helping strengthen that gut lining. So your body is better protected from everyday stressors. And that can lead to less bloating, better digestion,
Starting point is 00:12:27 better skin, better immunity. It has so many benefits. We all know that gut health is so intricately connected to your overall health. And since adding it to my routine, it has been something that I take consistently because it supports gut health, immune health, metabolism, even like I said, skin and hair from the inside out. Muscle recovery, so many benefits. And I've worked out a special offer for you guys. You can receive 30% off your first subscription order. When you go to armor.com slash well or enter the code well to get 30% off your first subscription order. That's A-R-M-R-A.com slash well for 30% off your first subscription order. For years, we've all been told that Omega-3s are the essential fats that we need for our health. But scientists,
Starting point is 00:13:14 actually discovered another one called C-15, and it is the first essential fatty acid discovered in more than 90 years. What's interesting is that C-15 plays a really important role in protecting and strengthening our cells. And when our cells don't have enough of it, they become fragile and age faster because we know that when our cells age, our bodies age two. And this is where fatty 15 comes in. It is a pure science-backed C-15 supplement that helps repair cells and protect them from future damage, which supports things like metabolism, liver health, heart health, and even joint discomfort. Another benefit that really caught my attention is that it also helps to support a healthy gut microbiome, which we know is connected to everything from digestion to immune health to how we feel day to day.
Starting point is 00:13:59 And compared to omega-3 supplements, which can actually oxidize and go bad, C-15 is much more stable and helps protect against damaging oxidation in your body. Fatty 15 is vegan, incredibly pure, and award-winning, and it comes in this really beautiful, reusable glass and bamboo jar, with refills delivered to your door so it's so convenient. Faty 15 is on a mission to optimize your C-15 levels to help you live healthier longer. You can get an additional 15% off their 90-day subscription starter kit by going to fatty15.com slash well and using the code well at checkout.
Starting point is 00:14:34 If you listened to last week's episode with Nike Master Trainer Joe Holder and you are inspired to lock in for summer, let me introduce you to Hungry Root. You have probably heard me talk about them before, and honestly, it's one of those things that just genuinely is going to simplify your life and simplify healthy eating. Hungry Root basically takes care of your weekly meal planning for you. They learn your tastes, they fill your cart with meals and groceries that you will actually like, and everything shows up ready to go, so eating healthy is just easy. One thing that I really appreciate is the variety. They have over 50,000 chef-crafted recipes, and a lot of them come together in 15.
Starting point is 00:15:12 minutes or less, which is ideal when you are busy, but you still want something healthy and satisfying. Lately, I've been doing a lot of their salads and grain bowls, which are so good and perfect when I want something quick but still balanced. They also have this almond chickpea cookie dough that is honestly amazing. If anybody remembers my famous cookies years ago, it kind of reminds me of that vibe. It is that good. I love that they focus on high quality ingredients, no high fructose corn syrup or artificial preservatives. They carry really great brands like, vital farms, Oatley, Ithaca Hummus, and Harmless Harvest. So if you're trying to stay consistent with healthier eating but you don't want to spend hours planning meals or grocery shopping,
Starting point is 00:15:51 this makes it so much easier. You are going to love HungryRoot and for a limited time you can get 40% off your first box plus a free item in every box for life. Just go to HungryRoot.com slash blonde and use the code blonde. That's HungryRoot.com slash blonde, code blonde for 40% off your first box and a free item of your choice for life. I've heard you say that when it comes to your own hair, your approach is kind of acceptance and it's more about working with your hair than against it. Would you say that that's your hair philosophy? It really is my philosophy.
Starting point is 00:16:28 I think going back to your earlier Bob question about who should have a Bob, I really think it's so flattering and there's like so many ways to kind of personalize your Bob. but it really ultimately comes down to your hair and can your hair handle it and how willing are you to deal with it and style it. And so for me, having my hair really long is a way for me to like manage my hair. I have so much hair. It's so frizzy. I bleach it. I'm determined to be blonde. And so it's not good for my hair, especially because I have like coarse frizzy hair. But I keep it long because it weighs it down and is so much more manageable for me. I've finally found the right products for my hair. I make them and it makes my hair so much easier to deal with day to day.
Starting point is 00:17:22 So yeah, I'm really a believer in find the right products for you, get a shape that really more works for your texture and of course your style and try to like mitigate the challenge. I just feel like life has plenty of challenges and your hair doesn't need to be one of them. I've heard the saying before that like you can either be blonde or you can have long hair. Essentially you can't have both and you're kind of like the opposite of that. Do you attribute that to genetics or how you care for your hair or a combination of both and how you style it or don't style it? Honestly, I think so much of it is products and the way that I care for my hair post bleach. I have definitely had breakage. I have breakage. I will say I'm like,
Starting point is 00:18:10 lucky to have a lot of hair, but it's very dry. And I really try to watch it for like those few weeks post bleach. My hair is extra kind of brittle. And I use oil treatments and deep conditioning masks every time I wash my hair. And that really helps build that strength back. And then it's like after a couple of weeks of like a really consistent routine with like oil treatments overnight and the deep conditioning masks, my hair is so much stronger and can take more. But you really have to watch it post bleaching specifically for a little bit of time because it's really in such a fragile state. Are you heat styling after or no? Are you waiting a couple weeks? Yes. I am heat styling, but I like would never not use oil. Okay. To you.
Starting point is 00:19:06 as a prep before styling and a detangler before brushing it. Okay. But pretty easy stuff. I think what's so confusing and I think this is probably partially why the whole Abby Young thing took off. Yeah. Because to your point of what you said earlier, hair isn't as intuitive as putting on some makeup or something. Yeah. And there's so much confusion around like high porosity, low porosity. I don't know if that's even a thing and the different hair types. And there's so many products out there and people don't know what to use when on what type of hair and how often and in what order. 100%. So if you could build like a minimalist routine, what would it be?
Starting point is 00:19:44 You know, 20 plus years behind the chair, owner of a hair salon, seeing like, I don't know, could it be thousands of women at this point? I can't do the math, but a lot of hair in my tans. and pretty much every hair type, every problem, you know, that exists I've seen. And I've always been able to kind of craft, okay, I want you to go home and like, I'm going to give you these, you know, three products. And when I see you in three to four months, it's really unbelievable how transformative products, like simple, easy to use products that you're actually going to use can really transform people's hair. but I saw how my clients would come in my chair and just go, like, I don't know anything about my hair. I know it's not working.
Starting point is 00:20:35 I don't know what to use. I don't know how much to use. And I could really help them. And so after all that time, I was like, you know what? I, like, really see that there's something to be desired here. Even as a hair stylist walking up to a shelf of hair product, I'm like, why would I ever need this? Like, this weird, you know, like moose to powder. I don't know. I'm like, this is too much. I just have my tried and true products. My kit has
Starting point is 00:21:04 products that like need to work on Emma Stone to Zoe Saldana, right? Couldn't be two completely different heads of hair, but those products need to work on them and work for any look we're going to do for a red carpet or whatever it is. And that's the same for any woman that walks in the salon, right? So I created this like very curated line. I wanted the products to be clean because I was also pregnant when I decided to launch the brand. Or I had just had my son. So when I was developing the products, I was pregnant and couldn't find anything in the clean hair space that I felt like really actually worked. It was like very crunchy granola, like conditioners that didn't condition my hair. It was like, oh, God, no wonder. It was really about creating only what was needed.
Starting point is 00:21:48 And to me, that is a really great champagne conditioner. Ideally, something, clarifying in addition to your shampoo that you can use daily or, you know, twice a week, three times a week. I don't care how often you wash your hair. I think that's also like a controversial. Yes. You can use, honestly, just like a great shampoo that's hydrating. You can use it every single day if you're someone that wants to wash your hair every
Starting point is 00:22:16 single day. It's really about the surfactants that are in that shampoo that aren't stripping. And we use coconut-based surfactants, for example, and they're very gentle. So not worried about how often you wash your hair. But I want you in addition to your daily shampoo, use a deeper clarifying shampoo like once a week and maybe every other week if you're using any kind of product, which most people are. And that's just to like create a fresh, clean slate. Like you know when you go and get your haircut and they give you like that double cleanse. And your hair's like it's lasted so much longer.
Starting point is 00:22:51 It has so much more movement and shine. that's because they've really paid attention to how they've shampooed your hair. They probably did two shampoos if I know hairdressers. They love a double cleanse. So at home you can really replicate that with a scrub or a detoxifying shampoo because that just brings so much more body and movement back into your hair and removes all that buildup. And then you want a detangler. Your detingler can also be your heat protectant.
Starting point is 00:23:19 Our best-selling product at Sephora is called milk hair serum. and it's up to 450 degrees of heat protection, but it's also like a beautiful detangler that you can blow dry with or you can air dry with it. So something like that. And then if you're someone who likes texture, you can go for like a texture builder or root lift product. If you're someone that likes extra shine,
Starting point is 00:23:39 maybe like an oil, I think a mask is important. So you don't need a whole lot, I think, to just have like a daily routine of basics. And then what about like scalp health? Because that's like so trendy now as well. Does the clarifying shampoo help with the scalp? Yes.
Starting point is 00:23:56 Or do we need to do extra things for our scalp? I think like a detoxifying shampoo or scrub. We just launched a scrub with rose. It's a beautiful product. It has caffeine in rosemary. So it is like stimulating. But it also has AHA and BHA salicylic acid to make sure that it's like the follicles thoroughly, you know, cleansed.
Starting point is 00:24:18 And that that foundation is really treated, right? because that's where your hair grows from. I mean, obviously, just below the scalp. I just know myself. And, like, if I bought a scalp serum, it would just kind of sit. But yeah, scalp health is important. Mostly because buildup is such an issue. And, like, we were just talking about how sometimes your hair can get weighed down my product. Just want to make sure you're thoroughly, like, clarifying it out. Same for the scalp. You just want to remove that buildup and wait on the scalp so that it can breathe. And, like, grow healthly. And so for me, like a scrub is enough, but you might also want to do like an oil,
Starting point is 00:24:59 like that pre-wash oil is great as like a scalp hydrator also. You want to wash that off. I would never use a scalp serum, but I'm like not against it. I just don't know what it's doing. You ask me, but what do I know? Yeah. You know what's so funny about your product is I first heard about it on armchair expert. Oh my gosh, Monica. I'm sure so many people. Yeah. And I was like, oh, I have to try it. She has amazing hair as well. And she's obsessed with your products. And that's like the only podcast that I listen. I listened to two podcasts forever. And that's one of them. And I never put it together that like, I go to your salon also. And then I was like, wait a second. Like I saw your stuff there. And then I I think I was talking to Liz about it. And I was like, oh. Yes. It's a funny connection.
Starting point is 00:25:47 The milk is perfect for you. I don't know if the oil is too heavy. I don't know. If you've you tried it. Okay. Yeah. For someone who is like a lot of hair, it gets dry, you bleach it. So you want like something hydrating. Mm-hmm. But that will never weigh it down.
Starting point is 00:26:01 So like that's like the perfect product for you. Amazing. Something that is often overlooked in skincare is how much hydration actually determines how your skin looks. When your skin can hold on to moisture properly, it just looks smoother, more radiant, and healthier overall. I mean, women can probably think of that week or two in their cycle where there's skin looks amazing and glowy and they are retaining more moisture during that time, which is why I've
Starting point is 00:26:29 been taking rituals Hyacera skin supplement instead of just focusing on topical products. It is designed to support skin hydration from the inside out. What makes it really interesting is the ingredients. So Hyacera includes clinically studied seramides, which help support your skin barrier and improve your skin's ability to retain moisture. Seramides are really important because they help keep water locked into the skin, which can help improve things like smoothness, elasticity, and overall glow. It also contains hyluronic acid, which is known for its ability to attract and hold onto water, basically helping your skin stay hydrated and plump. Since using it, one of the things that I've noticed is that my skin just feels more hydrated and smoother overall, which makes a big difference in how makeup sits
Starting point is 00:27:12 and how my skin looks day to day, even with a busy schedule, travel, different climates, all of that. And like all of Ritual's products, Hyacera is rigorously tested and third party validated for allergens, microbes, and heavy metals. It's Clean Label Project certified so you know exactly what you're putting in your body. And for a limited time, you can save 25% on your first month at ritual.com slash blonde. That's ritual.com slash blonde for 25% off your first month. GLP1 medications have obviously gotten a lot of attention for weight loss, but what's really interesting is how many health benefits go beyond the number on the scale.
Starting point is 00:27:49 These medications can help regulate appetite signals in the brain, improve metabolic health, and support better lab markers like blood sugar and cholesterol. Many people also report more stable energy, fewer cravings, and an overall healthier relationship with food. This has been kind of the universal consensus from a lot of the doctors that have been on my show. But one of the barriers for a lot of people has been access and also the fact that Most well-known GLP-1 options require self-injections, which can feel intimidating, which is why Ro is such a good option.
Starting point is 00:28:21 They offer the first FDA-approved GLP-1 pill for weight loss, which uses the same active ingredient as the injectable versions and delivers comparable results. In clinical studies, patients lost around 14% of their body weight in a year on average, while also seeing improvements in metabolic health. And the pill works by helping you feel fuller, reduce cravings, and support sustainable weight management while also addressing the underlying metabolic pathways that influence long-term health. So Roe also makes the process really streamlined. Their Rob Body membership gives you access to FDA-approved GLP-1 medications, unlimited provider messaging, side effect management, and dosing support,
Starting point is 00:29:00 all through 100% online care. My schedule lately has been so beyond hectic. I have had to really audit not just how I'm showing up in my day, but how I'm getting my energy because I have to be feeling energized, clear, and present throughout my day. And sometimes I tend to get on this spike and crash
Starting point is 00:31:16 roller coaster when I am relying on certain things for energy. I can't just be powering through on exhaustion. So I need something that actually supports me. And that is where spark comes in. I have been using spark energy and focus as part of my routine, especially on mornings when I want to feel dialed in before a workout, or even in that mid-afternoon slump when my brain just starts to go. And what I like about it is that it's not jittery, overwhelming energy. It's 120 milligrams of caffeine, but it's paired with amino acids and vitamins, so it feels a lot more balanced. I notice I can focus better, stay productive longer. I don't get that anxious, wired feeling or crash later. It also has zero sugar, which is huge for me, and ingredients like coline and B vitamins that support mental clarity and energy metabolism, so it feels
Starting point is 00:32:02 like more than just an energy drink. It actually fits into my routine in a way that feels really supportive, not depleting. Of course, also it tastes really good. It's one of those things that you actually look forward to drinking. So if you're looking for something to support more consistent energy and focus throughout your day, definitely give it a shot. Spark Energy and Focus is offering 30% off and free shipping when you go to drinkspark.com and use the code well at checkout. Again, that's well at drink spark.com. Okay, so when it comes to actually styling, I've heard you talk about braids you're a big fan of that when we are styling what tools are we using I've heard you talk about not using the highest heat because it doesn't actually hold the best which
Starting point is 00:32:48 was like oh yeah that's an interesting one yeah yes it's true actually especially for like people with finer hair if you're using the highest heat it could actually get too hot to where it just falls flat so if you're using your curling iron and you're like why isn't it holding a curl at all try that like middle heat. You still definitely need it hot, but this is actually like less about burning your hair and the fear of that. But honestly, it can just get too hot to where it just falls straight. Like even Zoe, who has a ton of hair and, you know, I never put it on the highest heat because it'll just, it's like it overheats it and just counteracts what I'm trying to do. So we always do it on like a middle setting. So it's the same idea with curling, right? Like if you put curlers in and then
Starting point is 00:33:36 you let it set. Yes. It's the heat that forms the curl, but then it's the cool that sets the curl. Exactly. Right. So that's why you also don't want to like brush through your curls to break them up right when they're still hot. You want to let it kind of cool in that like scary looking curl and then brush through it or, you know, shake it out. But that exactly, that hair really holds memory from that like hot to cool, essentially. I'm a big believer in not doing too much if you have.
Starting point is 00:34:08 are trying to air dry or like minimize the amount of heat you're using. Really allowing your hair to like take its own shape and products obviously really help with that. But trying not to overly like manipulate it. So not pulling too much, not brushing too much. Really allowing the hair to kind of take its own shape and then working with that shape. A lot of the styles I create are more natural. My mom was a sculptor and I think I I love the beauty of nature and I love hair and that everybody has different shapes. And I'm all about manipulating it and styling it and doing really fun things to it. But I think the hair always comes through.
Starting point is 00:34:54 It doesn't feel overly forced or like, you know, styled into submission. I just generally like that. So I think for me, breeds can really help work with your. natural texture to kind of define it and, you know, solidify that shape. Twists can do the same thing. Yeah, for air drying. And then when it comes to heat styling, yes. Are we allowed to use flat irons?
Starting point is 00:35:23 Are we using hair curlers? Yeah. What are we allowed to do and what is off limits? So I want to make sure, I mean, maybe everybody knows this, but I got so scared when people are telling me like, I bought one of those hot brushes or whatever. I'm like, you know that that's on drying air. Oh, yeah. Right.
Starting point is 00:35:37 Okay, right. Yeah. We know that. We, everybody knows that right. I hope. I think so. PSA. I met one person that didn't. Now I'm like forever in fear that there are more out there. But it's beautiful for like adding a bit of curl in. Yeah. One thing I'll say is I'm a bore bristle brush gal, not a metal brush gal. I learned that recently from Danny. Yeah. He was like, you're breaking your hair if you're using the metal on the wet hair. And I was like, what? I've done that my whole life. If you have hairdresser listeners, again, it's like kind of controversial, but I'm always like, when I see a metal brush hairdresser person. I'm like, how are you? How do you do that? I know summer, like, I used to work at a salon and the salon owner was a metal brush guy and he did beautiful hair, but I'll never forget. Like, I don't know how. I love bore bristle brushes. I think they get so much smoother. You want some tension when you're around brushing. So I'm a big, like, invest in a great blow dryer with a nozzle. I like a narrow. I like a narrowing. I like a narrowing.
Starting point is 00:36:37 nozzle. So like the Dyson's have a narrow nozzle, although Dyson's not my favorite flow dryer. I would say my favorite right now. Actually, L'Oreal sent me this like L'Oreal Aerox maybe, pro or something. It's very techy. It's got a lot of screens and buttons and things I don't understand, but it's a great dryer. And you can kind of like customize your settings, which is whatever, but it's good. And it's supposed to be better for your hair. because I think it's using some kind of like light technology. I also like a classic Parlex. Amazon, whatever, literally will last you a lifetime. Have you tried Leiffen? No. Leifin, L-A-I-F-E-N. Is that the like skinnier one? It kind of looks a little bit like a Dyson hair dryer. I got one in the south of France over the summer because my hair dryer like blew out.
Starting point is 00:37:35 So somebody, okay, yes. Actually, Nina Park just told me about it like that. I went to their like best buy, Dardy in like Santerpe because I was like, I need to get a new hair dryer. And I just saw the box and I was like, okay, it looks good. It's so precise. Yeah. It's so good. I love it. Yeah. And then I got one here like on Amazon as well. It's like 150 maybe. But I, I love it. And I feel like it also has some kind of like technology where it's not like, as bad. Yeah. Yeah. That's my hot tip.
Starting point is 00:38:10 My one hot tip. Got to get my thin. I'm going to get one. Totally. So I am like invest in a good blow dryer. I feel like the air wraps are okay for a very specific type of person who has easier hair. Like if you have really thick hair, if you have coarse hair, it's probably not for you. if you have fine hair and you just want to like dry it and put a little bit of like movement into it,
Starting point is 00:38:41 it's probably for you. And I think it can be game changing. I have tried round brush blow dryers, right? Because I think people have a hard time with a round brush and a blow dryer and learning that like, you know, if you can learn it, it's like you're going to get the best style, I think. But some of these brush dryers are pretty good. I tried a T3 one and I really liked it. My hair needs like if I'm going to blow it, it needs tension and heat. And it gave me that. Like I was very impressed with the results. So I do like those if you feel like it's too much to do the double-handed thing. I personally like to use the flat iron as sort of like a touch-up tool. I know that it can be a lot easy. if you can get your hair dry and then use your flat iron as like the styler or the smoother.
Starting point is 00:39:43 But the hair never looks as great. It doesn't have as much movement as like if you were to blow dry it first and then really use it more as like a touch-up long-lasting mechanism. So if I give myself a blowout and then like I bathe my kids. kids and it gets like a little frizzy around my, you know, then I'll go in with my flat iron and retouch it up for a couple days. And I feel like I get the best results that way. And yeah, I love my GHD curling irons. I also love T3 curling irons. Yeah. Do you like a dry heat protectant? Like if you're going back in on day two or day three hair, is the heat protectant that you use three days ago sufficient? Or should you use something on the dry hair?
Starting point is 00:40:29 Yeah. It's probably not sufficient. I do still think any. I do still think any, that coats your hair is helping to protect it. But being like a, you know, brand founder and product developer now, we do clinical studies with products to test for heat protection. And our products do have the claim of heat protection. And that's our styling oil and our milk care serum. I tend to like lightweight serums or oils as heat protectors. Even on dry hair, I think just like a dab of the oil on top and then going back in to restile it would suffice. It's coating the hair and it has the heat protection clinical claim. I find heat protectors often to be very like alcohol heavy and kind of drying. So ideally if you have like a serum,
Starting point is 00:41:28 that's hydrating and smoothing that can also act as your heat protector. I prefer that. Okay, so I would be remiss if I didn't talk to you a little bit about celebrity styling because you're amazing and you've done some iconic looks and celebrities and we're approaching award season. Yes. So when you are working with a celebrity, how do you decide on a style? Yeah. It's such a fun question to answer and I don't feel like I talk about it that often, but it's so hard to not sounds so cheesy, but I essentially love, I love my job and I love working with someone consistently. I'll totally pop in and like do a one-off with someone and that's fun too and, you know, but I do think that building a relationship and I've been really fortunate to work with some of the women.
Starting point is 00:42:20 I've worked with Zoe for 20 years. Zoe Soljanya? Yes. Yeah. Insane. And Emma for like 17. I mean, crazy. We were children and grew up together.
Starting point is 00:42:30 But it's really fun because I do feel like we've done a good job of totally changing looks and doing. I mean, I feel like Emma alone is like a hair chameleon with color and the different styles and shaving it to growing it out, you know. But I really love to work with someone. And so almost like architect the vibe. Vibe. I love it. That's got to go in your bio now. It's so embarrassing.
Starting point is 00:43:02 But I think that it's more about, you know, I have one client who, I won't name her, but I was like she is an actress. But very much like what looks right on her is this like 90s model. Like those Amber Valletta, Christy Turlington styles, even Kate Moss. Like she looks really great when there's like a little bit of sexiness. and nothing overly done. The second you overdo it, it just, it's too much in a photograph on a carpet. And there's still so much room to, okay, you can do like a big 90s blowout and like mess it up a little bit. Or you can do that kind of Kate Moss more, you know, sexy bedhead vibes.
Starting point is 00:43:54 Like there's still so much room. It's not pigeonholing. She does not look the same every time she steps out, but it feels like there's this thread. And it's more of a shape thing that just really works on her. And that's different for every client. There are just certain shapes and like overall vibes that work. So I love when I get to work with a makeup artist and a stylist. And we look at yes, the individual look and who they're going to be that day for that award show.
Starting point is 00:44:27 but it's really awesome to get to build it over time and kind of create this like overall sort of persona of really like how this person gets to like show up on a red carpet consistently. Yeah, I mean, you think of certain celebrities and you think of their hair as well. Like I think of Emma Stone and that pixie cut and certain looks that she has in you're right. She is a chamele and she can pull anything off, right? I mean, she's like, and other celebrities, obviously, like, Jennifer Aniston was like, you know, the first, you know, but the 90s supermodels as well. Yes. But it seems like it would be so difficult to figure out what works.
Starting point is 00:45:12 Obviously, you've been doing it for so long so you know. But is there any truth to like, if you have a long face, your hair should be shorter and if you have a heart shaped face, your hair should be longer. Like these, quote unquote rules that we see. Obviously, like, there's outliers and people can do whatever they want. Totally. But in your experience over the 22 years of your work that you've been doing, like, have you seen any patterns with that? I really haven't because I just think it's like there's too much to take in. And really it's more about shape in general.
Starting point is 00:45:50 and, you know, I've seen bangs cut on women that, like, don't fit. You know, maybe that do have, like, a wider face, but then they have those, like, big, gorgeous eyes. And it just, like, frames their face in such a perfect way. Or someone will cut bangs and you're like, oh, no, like, you have the perfect face for bangs. But, like, now I can't see your eyebrows. And your eyebrows gave you so much dimension. So I think it's like it's more I do personally think like building a relationship with a stylist with a hairdresser is so key. And I know you're you've been so loyal to your hairdresser.
Starting point is 00:46:33 I think when you find that person that just like sees you and gets you hairstylists really are like sculptors. They take in every facet of your face and then also your tone and also your time. and also your texture and really work with it. And again, like there's so much room. It's not like you are stuck with the same style once your stylist decides. There's still so much room, but I think there might be like, you know, a framework in which you work within. Right. We never go shorter than, you know, collarbone because your hair is just going to like go super wide or whatever.
Starting point is 00:47:14 And so and you're never going to blow dry it at home and you're going to paint me once you leave this a lot. So there might just see you be more of a framework, but I think that relationship is key. Do you have a favorite red carpet or editorial look that you've ever done off the top of your head? Emma Stone's most recent September Vogue cover was just like a career highlight. It was my first ever American Vogue. and it was working with an incredible photographer. Grace Cottington was there. Nicholas Gascayor did all the luxe, or Nicola Giscayere, did all the lux.
Starting point is 00:47:52 And it was just so, and we were in the South France. It was so every, like it checked every box. Yeah. And the hair was kind of wild and crazy, but that's fun too to not overthink it. It was sort of like a challenge in that. They really wanted it to be like she woke up and it was wild. And so, you know, that was just really fun, such a fun moment. Amazing.
Starting point is 00:48:13 Yeah. And you're doing award season this year, I take it? Award season this year, yes. Can you give us any hints? We just had critics' choice and I got to work with Rose Byrne, which is wonderful. I saw that. She looked amazing. She's such a dream.
Starting point is 00:48:25 That updo. Oh my God. So fun. So good. And then Emma and Zoe, I think they'll like all be doing something. So fun. Amazing. Well, thank you so much.
Starting point is 00:48:36 Oh, my gosh. Tell everybody where they can find you and where they can find you. find Rose and we'll link everything in show notes as well.
