Starting point is 00:00:00 The following podcast is a dear media production. This is Well, a podcast about wellness in all its forms. I'm Ariel Lori, and each week I'm sharing unfiltered conversations with people shaping how we feel, live, and look. Come for the substance, stay for the honesty, and leave with the tools to be well, inside and out. If you're into skincare, anti-aging, beauty treatments, really anything that has to do with looking and feeling your best, which if you're listening to, this podcast. I am pretty sure that you are. I know that you're going to love today's episode. As much as I loved recording it, you guys know me. I love talking to any skincare girlie or guy. And today I'm talking to Olivia Boyd Smith. She's the founder of Parr Olive. And she is such an
Starting point is 00:00:53 interesting person to talk to about skin and beauty because she spent years as a beauty and wellness writer, including at Vogue Australia. She had a front row seat to pretty much every skincare launch, treatment ingredient, and expert opinion that you can imagine. But after years of reporting on beauty, she started noticing a disconnect between the way dermatologists were thinking about skin and the way the beauty industry was talking about it and approaching it, which ultimately led her to build par olive. But today's conversation really isn't about one product. It's about skin. So we get into what really creates beautiful skin from the inside out. the biggest drivers of aging. Why collagen has become such a confusing topic, how to actually
Starting point is 00:01:35 maintain your collagen and build more, how to think about supplements, the treatments that she thinks are actually worth your money, the skincare products that aren't worth your money, the daily habits that make a much bigger difference than most of us realize. And I also loved hearing how Olivia thinks about beauty as someone who's tried everything. She has interviewed so many people and she still comes back to the fundamentals. So if you're someone who loves skincare, but also wants to understand why certain things work, not just what's trending,
Starting point is 00:02:03 I think you're really going to enjoy this conversation. And if you want to check out Par Olive, which I have to say is my new obsession, I found it months ago at Air One, get the coconut. It is so good. You can head to parolive.com, and she was kind enough to give us a code well
Starting point is 00:02:21 for 25% off your first three months of your subscription. And with that, let's get into my conversation with Olivia. Welcome. Thank you. So great to be here. Cannot wait to talk to you. To start, I want to play a little game that I've been playing with guests recently, which has finished the sentence. So for you, beautiful skin is a 360 degree approach, which is a long answer. But I think it's so, there are so many pillars to beautiful, healthy, optimal skin health. Yes. And we're going to get into all of those today. The biggest skincare myth is the topical is enough. The most overrated beauty trend right now is. Hmm. So many. I'd probably say RF frequency micronedling. Same. Same. I just did a solo episode a few weeks ago and I did the treatment that everyone
Starting point is 00:03:13 loves that I would never do. Mm. Mm. It's RF. Yeah. Actually, I did do it. And then I had to put fat back in my face. So okay. That's why. But I feel like people are starting to, kind of understand that there can be like ramifications. I believe so. I think it's like so much in this industry. I feel like you need to have a few trusted experts which will have a critical lens on a lot of these procedures. And unfortunately, it's not commonplace in the industry. So I think having a few people that you really, really respect and follow their expertise is so important in today's day and age with treatments, with topicals, with ingestibles, all the things. Agreed. The women with the best skin always protect it.
Starting point is 00:03:56 Always wear SPF, wear a hat, wear sunglasses. It's your collagen will degrade with the sun. That's like obviously we all know that that's one of the first signs of ages through sand damage and through collagen breakdown from sun exposure. So the women with the best skin always protect it. Have you been a lifetime protector of your skin? I have. I have. Because you have dermatologists and your family, right?
Starting point is 00:04:20 I do. My mom's a dermatology nurse. And then my mom, I grew up, she was in the skin clinic space. Her really close friend was a surgeon. So I would finish school and go to their day hospital. And I would sit in the recovery room because they had the best snacks. And I would see women having sand damage lasers, surgeries, all of these things to really, men and women, to really protect and rejuvenate their skin for the long term. And my mom was always thothering me in SBF. She was always talking to me about the foods that I eat and how that impacts my overall. of raw skin health. And I started on a brand called Enviroen when I was 14. So I've truly been born into the industry. And I was the girl, I've always been the friend that my friends would go to and ask like, what routine should I be using? What do you actually think of this treatment? So, yeah, that was really the impetus for creating the brand. I love Environ. Have you used
Starting point is 00:05:09 their roller? I have. I have. I really like the, and it's a lot of our asceticians and derms that we work with. I've spoken to them about that roller and they, they like it. It's definitely It's controversial. Whenever I post about it on social media, everyone's like, no, because it pulls at your skin, but there's a way to do it. And I think that one specifically was designed by the doctor who invented actual microneedling, right? Oh, interesting. I actually don't know the background of the roller specifically. I just know that asceticians that I've asked and dermatologists that I've asked about it, they've said it's a safe amount of penetration at home, whereas some of these rollers are far too aggressive for people to be using at home. Yeah. I wish more people understood that skin health is
Starting point is 00:05:54 biological. It's what you ingest. It's your stress levels. It's what you use topically. It's the treatments that you do. It's such a holistic approach. And I think people are becoming so much more aware of that now, which I'm so grateful for. And it's really how you can achieve optimal skin health for the long term. You really have to, I think intelligent choices is so important. And less is more. The future of skincare is. It's ingestible. I agree. We're going to circle back to that, but I want to talk a little bit more.
Starting point is 00:06:25 You just mentioned how you've always kind of been the go-to for your friends. You've been interested in beauty and skincare from a really holistic approach. But what is your personal skincare and beauty philosophy now? Now it's what I just touched on earlier around it's topical. I use really specific clinical grade topical products. And I don't use a lot. It's a really less is more intelligent clinical. dosages, really incredible brands that I work with that are developed by experts, that are
Starting point is 00:06:53 recommended by experts. And then the same with my ingestable routine. And then the same with procedures. I think having a sequence and having an expert-led protocol, I think is so important to really feel great in your skin. And we all want to feel really great in our skin. I think, like we all know, I definitely suffered with acne and those kinds of things when I was younger, like hormonal breakouts. And that can have such a huge impact on our overall confidence. And I think there's so much great information out there and so many incredible experts out there now to really help equip everyone to really achieve their best skin and feel really confident. But there's also a lot of not so great information out there. So I think it's really important, I think, for us as a
Starting point is 00:07:34 brand to really create value and educate consumers because there is so much noise. Knowing that everybody is different. We all have different skin. We have different concerns. We have different goals. All of that. And you give us like a quick breakdown of what is your routine from topicals to ingestibles and beyond. Yeah, we'd love to. So I love a brand called Environment that I touched on and is clinical. They're my two go-to brands that I always reach for. So I use one of their gel cleansers in the morning.
Starting point is 00:08:02 Clensing complex? I do. My favorite. So good. I cleanse once in the morning and then twice of an evening. That's really important for me. Obviously, I wear a lot of SPF throughout the day. And I wear a tinted moisturizer.
Starting point is 00:08:14 So to be able to wash that off of an evening, it's really important. it, but we'll take it back to morning routine. So I cleanse with the cleansing complex. And then I use something called Gen X, which is an antioxidant serum, which I really love. And then I use one of their hydrating serums. I believe it's called hydrocool. Then I use Environ ABST3. And then I use color science SPF. I love color science too. It's phenomenal. I use that as my foundation. Yeah. I think the flex one. Yes. It's amazing. I really love it because it's really light. You can still see your skin, but it has really great SPF protection. I think it's a really, really incredible brand. I love that one. I think that along with ingestible skin care, I think SPF makeup is like going to be
Starting point is 00:08:56 so massive. It already is, but you see more brands like CL. That one is amazing. I thought the conceal is really incredible. I've not tried it yet, but I haven't tried the concealer, but the skin tin is amazing. Okay. And then color science. I mean, it's different because I think CL, I don't think it's mineral. And color science is. It could be wrong. But yeah, I mean, as far as protection goes, like, we just didn't have those options when we were younger. No. And like, and mineral was a white cast and it was so thick. So I think it's, yeah, it's so different now. I mean, like, my partner still wears mineral and he looks like a ghost and he walks out.
Starting point is 00:09:28 And he just doesn't care. And I'm like, I love you. You need to rub it in. They need to figure that out. I mean, like, he like just rubs it on so aggressively to his face. I'm like, we are not going to war. You can, like, calm down and like really take second. But yeah, mineral is great. Yeah. Do you have any other little hacks? I heard you on Pia's pod. You were talking about like black seed oil. Do you have any things like that that are kind of lesser known? I feel like that's kind of having a moment too, but that have helped with your skin and your skin journey. I do. I mean, I will always dabble. I really speak to, we have a really incredible board of
Starting point is 00:10:02 dermatologists that work with the brand and I'll always pick their brains and say like what research is coming out. What are you doubling in personally? What are you recommending? I do something every morning, which I spoke about on peers' podcast, called the skin bowl. And that's like all my skin loving ingredients in one bowl in the morning because I work and travel so much. I'm often out for lunches. I'm out for dinners. So I really love having a super nutrient rich bowl in the morning, which has all the healthy
Starting point is 00:10:29 fats, antioxidants, all of those different elements in that one breakfast first thing in the day. But other than that, what am I doing at the moment? I've really stripped it back. I've been traveling a lot. So I have my ingestable routine. I have my topical routine. And then I have a dermatologist that I really trust and I'll have a few treatments throughout the year to just really help with overall skin health and rejuvenation.
Starting point is 00:10:50 What treatments do you like to do? BBL, I've done since I was 20. Wow. Yeah. So my mom really got me on to, it's called broadband light for everyone. It is not the other. Whenever I see BBL, they're like, hmm. So broadband light, it's like a dermatology level laser kind of like, what's called IPR.
Starting point is 00:11:07 So IPR. But broadband light is really incredible, really helps to rejuvenate the skin, clean up any sundae, damage throughout the year. So I love that. And I've recently started microneedling. I've done three sessions and I love that. Three sessions every year is what my ascetician here recommends. So I've been doing that and I've seen really great results. And then I just, I'm so consistent. Like I'll give my partner a facial sometimes and he's like, do you do this every night? And I'm like, yep. Like I love, I love the ritual of taking care of myself at the end of the day. And then I always just make sure that I have my supplements in my bag. I make my skin bowl in the morning with all. And I'm
Starting point is 00:11:43 antioxidants and collagen peptides. And I just, yeah, I'm super consistent with the basics. And really, and then sometimes I'll dabble with things that are trending. But I think for me, it's just like really leaning on those evidence-led basics and really having them as a foundation. I think that's so important for people to hear because I think there's a misconception that you can just go and get a laser or go and get a treatment. And then it's kind of one and done and you don't have to do the other stuff. And you work with so many dermatologists and experts and you have this incredible network. And I'm sure that they would all agree that it's the things that you're doing daily. Yes. The boring mundane stuff that you're doing daily, even though it's not boring to us. We enjoy these kind of rituals. But that's what's going to
Starting point is 00:12:27 make the biggest difference. And then the other stuff is kind of the cherry on top. It really is. But I think it's so hard for women and men. I think there's so much messaging now. I think with different ingredients, different topicals, different treatments, different ingestibles. And I think there's so much mixed messages. So I think it's, I think it's really challenging. But for me, it's really having those people that I really trust and I have access to so many incredible global dermatologists. And so I'm able to have that access and information from them and being able to really then, that goes in like with everything that we do with Parolev. It's all clinically backed. It's all clinically research and so I really have that same approach to my own skin health. At what point since you've
Starting point is 00:13:12 been kind of beauty obsessed your whole life, grown up around this and you've seen a lot, when were you like, there needs to be another element to this? Like it's not all topical, like what you said in the beginning. What was the moment that shifted that for you? So when I would finish school and it's in the recovery room, I would hear the conversations that my mom would be having and that all other women that she worked with would be having in practice about the different supplements, the different key ingredients and active dosages, their lifestyle, their topical routine, their recovery routine. I would hear that. And then I saw such a missing piece of the puzzle when I was then in the beauty world. And I grew up and my dad was also quite sick throughout my childhood. So he had a really
Starting point is 00:13:55 big emphasis on how what foods impacts longevity and overall health. So I always knew that interlink between what you ingest and how that impacts your skin health and then also how that impacts your overall well-being and your overall health. And then when I was in my early 20s, I was a beauty and wellness writer with Vogue and I was interviewing different dermatologists and I got along with them so well and built really incredible relationships. And I remember one of the dermatologists who now works with us, she said, there's so many peer-reviewed papers now out on collagen peptides, hydrolyzed collagen peptides, but there's so little traceability. And I thought, I'm having wild caught fish and going to my local butcher.
Starting point is 00:14:36 Why is there so little traceability with supplements, which is something that you take every single day? And I just saw that huge gap in the market. So that was when I really went to create the brand. But I always had an ingrained knowing that what you ingest and the foods that you ingest, how that impacts your overall well-being health and especially skin health. But I think now it's obviously so mainstream. Whereas at the time, I'm now 33, so at the time like 13 years ago, it really was.
Starting point is 00:15:01 Tell us about the first product. So the hero products within Parolev is the marine collagen super powder. I really created that through need. Like I couldn't find a product that I felt confident consuming every day. I would turn the back of a lot of collagen products and they'd never say where they were they were sourced from or it was sourced from Brazil, China and France. And it was not single origin. And often they're sourced from farmed collagen. Farmed collagen has closed waters.
Starting point is 00:15:25 So they're often contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, hormones from the fish feed. And I don't want to ingest that every single day. So I sought out, I worked with an Australian manufacturer who has two different doctors that sit on the board and a dermatologist that advises us. And we found our collagen supplier, which is dermatest clinically proven. So it has over 90% absorption. It's all sourced from Norway and it's all sourced from cod skin, which is the highest grade of collagen in the world, which for me was really important.
Starting point is 00:15:54 And then we pair that with vitamin C. And we have so many clinicals that show that vitamin C is imperative for maximum collagen absorption. So that was the product. And then we also pair that with semenols, which are really great for the skin, for overall skin tone, texture, and to reduce inflammation. And then I wanted so many supplements, this tastes so synthetic and have so many fillers, multidextron, corn thickeners that bulk them up. So I created the coconut product, which is organic coconut flash. And I tried 42 different coconut suppliers, and we landed on the coconut and it adds the delicious creaminess to your tea, coffee, smoothies, and people literally eat it off the spoon. And that's our
Starting point is 00:16:33 best seller. So that's done really well. And then, so that's the core product. And it comes in the organic coconut, unflavored, and a ceremonial grade matcher. What did you first notice in your skin when you started using them? Definitely the plumpness of my skin and just overall hydration and elasticity within my skin. And then my nail strengthening and then my head just feeling so much shinier, so much healthier and so much stronger. And now because I've taken it and I'm so consistent, I notice when I don't take it because you kind of become, you become comfortable with like the changes in your skin and you get so used to it. And then if I stop taking it for a week, if I run out on holidays or something like that, then I really, really feel it. And that's the
Starting point is 00:17:13 sentiment that we hear so much through our community, which is really interesting. I want to go back to the sourcing because I think that it's kind of a blind spot in the supplement industry. And I know that Australia, they have way more stricter regulations, right, than we have here. Yeah, Australia is incredible. So in Australia, I'm so proud that we're made in Australia, in Australia supplements are listed medicine. So they're really, it's really rigorous standards for supplement manufacturing. And you have to have really robust clinicals and you have to use the clinical dosages. Before you even print the label and make any claims, it is so strict in Australia. So I definitely started in the hardest market, but I'm so grateful for that. And we're stuck to know
Starting point is 00:17:54 for 700 dermatology clinics and that's how we've been able to scale and build so much trust is because we have robust clinicals it's developed under such rigorous manufacturing standards which unfortunately just is not commonplace in the United States. I think people have no idea and I think that it's kind of insidious because you're taking a supplement to improve something whether it's your health, your appearance, whatever it is and it's something that you're usually ingesting every single day. Yeah. And people have no idea. I learned about this. few years ago with somebody else who was on my podcast that like oftentimes what they say is in the supplement is not even in the supplement you don't know what the dosage is you don't know
Starting point is 00:18:36 where it's sourced from the capsule itself i don't know if that's something that you yeah focused on as well but like where these things are derived from can be quite shocking it is it is especially in i mean in australia we have to do we have batch tests with every single ingredient that you import in and then we have batch tests on every single formula. It's such, we have such rigorous protocols for heavy metals, pesticides. You have to use clinical dosages. It's just so stringent and so strict. So whereas it's just definitely not the case in the United States.
Starting point is 00:19:09 So it's truly, I laugh, but it is kind of truly the Wild West. You can make something in your grandmother's kitchen and put it on the shelf. I had someone say like, oh, that actually sounds quite nice. But I think it is, yeah, it is really, it's an interesting. time in the industry. And I think for us, it's really educating consumers to enable them to turn the back of the jar and just actually be able to read every ingredient, know why it's in there, and actually where it's sourced from. And that's something that we're so proud of. We have full visibility over our supply chain, which for me is so important. You're taking the supplement
Starting point is 00:19:44 every single day. Like, I want to know where it's sourced from. And it's clinically tested. It's clinically dose. It's clinically proven, developed by experts. And we have that same approach with topocular There's so many medical-grade incredible cosmetatistical brands, but unfortunately in the supplement space, there's so much pink-washing and there's really a lack of clinical integrity. So that's where we're really excited to build part of. Knowing everything that you know now, are there any claims that you see on supplements that you like immediately ignore because you know that it doesn't mean anything? All of them.
Starting point is 00:20:21 Is there any ingredient that would surprise people about? how it's sourced, whether it's good or bad? I mean, you mentioned like some of the negatives. Honestly, collagen. Like, honestly, collagen. Like, I think if you Google farmed collagen peptides, I don't think you'll ever be able to ingest them again. I couldn't even, once I was doing the research with our two doctors and dermatologists that we work with, I couldn't even do the testing of other competitors on the market because I just felt so sick at the prospect of ingesting that. So for me, yeah, collagen is definitely a really interesting one. And also, just like not all collagen are created equal. The hydrolyization process, the clinicals behind them,
Starting point is 00:21:00 we have an over 70% repurchase rate because we have such strong clinicals behind the brand and people actually see really incredible results. But a lot of collagen peptides like bovine, marine collagen, it's also different. But unfortunately, it's really confusing for the average consumer. What is the hydrolyization process? So in, oh really, I can sometimes get so carried away with this and my team's like, all right, Olivia, you need to bring it back. No, we like it. We like scientific stuff. So hydrolyization, it's actually the enzymatic process which breaks the molecule down into the smallest particle size. So parolive is hydrolyzed down to 2,000 daltons, which is the actual particle size of the collagen peptide. And so we have over 90% absorption. So you actually absorb the
Starting point is 00:21:42 collagen peptides and actually see results within your skin. So that is so imperative that it's hydrolyzed down to the lowest molecular weight because then you actually absorb it and then you actually see results. If you open a tab of products, like if you look at the unflavored and you look at the actual particle size of the collagen and you contrast that to another marine collagen peptide or even a bovine, they're huge particle sizes. It's like it almost looks like a sugar in comparison to ours is a super, super fine powder because it's such a low molecule size who actually absorb the collagen peptide. And you are unflavored. That's Victoria Beckham's favorite, right? It is. It is. You have all the girls, Rosie, what does she like? Yeah, we've been able to, like, stock the brand and really
Starting point is 00:22:25 incredible dermatologists and skin asceticians that look after so many incredible names in the industry. And so I've built a really incredible community and incredible women who really follow the brand and really stand behind it, which is such a pinch me moment. It's like, it still feels surreal. But, yeah, it's really exciting. What do you think some of the philosophies are that all of those experts would kind of agree on that maybe hasn't reached the consumer yet. Because it feels like to me, like everyone understands topicals. The skincare market is so massive and saturated and everything right now. It seems intuitive that ingestible would be part of your routine, but it doesn't, it seems like it's just starting to kind of catch on with people. I mean, I feel like it depends where you are in
Starting point is 00:23:13 your beauty journey, but to have such a massive network of experts, like, Like, what do you think their philosophy is that's different from other people who maybe haven't thought up yet? Evidence and clinically led. I think that's something that all of our experts, like even one of our dermatologists, Dr. Susan, she's so incredible. And even she said, she was like, before I found your product and I read your white papers and I read your clinicals, I thought that people that take these kinds of supplements just have really healthy bowels. And then she was like, and then I read all of your clinicals. I saw how you've developed to the product. I've looked into your medical team and I really stand behind what you're building.
Starting point is 00:23:54 And that is, I think, the lens that a lot of the right experts look at trends through. Like they look at topicals, ingestibles, and treatments through that lens. Because they are trained to have that eye. They're in the industry every day. They are looking through the peer-reviewed papers. They're looking at the clinicals. and they're able to really digest that information, whereas, like, the average consumer doesn't have time to do that.
Starting point is 00:24:23 So I think that that's the biggest difference is there's so many claims and experts are really looking at, like, what's the evidence? What's the clinical rigor behind the topical brand, this treatment, or this ingestible? Yeah, and I feel like it gets more important as you age. I'm 40. I'm turning 41. And, like, my skin's ability to retain moisture in the last couple years has plummeted. So ingestibles make so much sense.
Starting point is 00:24:50 And as you age, you realize that you have to take more of a holistic approach. Like, it's not just one thing or it's not just two things. It's not just skincare and treatments. Like you really have to be supporting your skin versus aggressively treating it. And I think that that might be a shift that's kind of happening in the industry. And you're spearheading that in a lot of ways because it's more about like supporting from the inside out. And you look at people who are like truly radiant. and they're not just doing like Botox and fillers and skincare.
Starting point is 00:25:19 No. And I think that that is, that was really commonplace. And I think people are now so aware that you can't just have Botox and filler and all of these things and not be looking after your skin on a biological level, not be actually protecting your skin with SPF, wearing hats, wearing sunglasses, all of those things. Because you really do need to have such a holistic approach to optimal skin health. And it's really interesting. our dermatology board
Starting point is 00:25:45 we're talking about how, and some data that a lot of people know is once you hit the age of 25, your collagen stores start to decline by 1% every single year. But a really staggering number is in your first year of menopause, you lose 30% of your body's natural collagen.
Starting point is 00:26:01 Oh my gosh. It's not too scare anyone. I think like having that information is so important because what you do at 20 is really different to what you do at 30, to what you do at 40. And your protocol just need to change in terms of the ingestable.
Starting point is 00:26:13 that you're taking in terms of the tubicles, in terms of the treatment. And it doesn't mean you need to go like all gangbusters and be doing all of the things. I think it's just having really intelligent choices and really leaning on experts to have that level of rigor with like, okay, I want to feel really great. I want to look as good as I feel on the inside as I reach these different decades. And I think that that's where I really see the brand, shaping as a clinical, ingestable skincare brand and being a legacy brand. think we now know how important ingestibles are and there's really so much in the mass space with low grade products but for the discerning consumer I think there's so few ingestibles that are really speaking to those consumers that want clinical dosages, want expert backing. So it's a really
Starting point is 00:27:00 exciting time. Yeah. And back to something that you were saying in the beginning was like with this misconception that you can just do Botox and fillers, this is like a hill that I will die on that I try not to fight with people who leave comments on my Instagram. But I think the general public, a lot of people who aren't educated, really think that, you know, you can just do those things and that fixes everything. And it's like your skin is aging no matter what you do. So yes, you can like stop some movement. You can soften lines. You can, you know, get some contour, shadows with filler. You can get surgery. Like you can do lasers. Totally. But aging is still happening. And yeah, we're learning more. I feel like Dr. Shereen Idris talks about this a lot, the different
Starting point is 00:27:47 aging peaks. Like there's a massive one at age 44. But even before that, like 30s going into 40s, I started to notice a lot of changes and hormones just with hormones changing and collagen loss and all of that. I think that it's amazing that we're learning about these ways that we can support our bodies and support our skin so that we're not experiencing like such massive changes. And I think just feeling your best at every point. I think is the biggest thing. Like we're not trying to, I personally, I'm 33. I don't want to look 23. Like I, like I want to just like look like a, I have great skin for 33. I want to feel really great for being a 33 year old. And I think for me, that's something that I feel so passionate about. Also, just like being a woman in this industry,
Starting point is 00:28:35 you see so much. Now with GLP 1s, there's like so many glorified diet pills on the market. And I just could not stand behind that and feel proud of what I'm putting into the world. I mean, like, I grew up as a ballerina. I was so exposed to so much messaging and so much marketing. And I just feel like we don't use the word anti-aging. I'm so strict with how we really come to market and how we communicate with our community. I think it's just so, so important that we're educating our community, that we're equipping them with access to our incredible experts so that you can really feel great at every age and just feel your best at that age. I think it's so important. And I mean, like, you speak so openly and so beautifully about, like, your age and about the things that you do
Starting point is 00:29:19 for your skin. And I think that's so important. Like, I think so many people, I know, so many women who won't say their age. And I'm like, you need to, which I understand because of the culture that we're all in. But I think it's so important to be really open with other women. And then it kind of like opens that conversation up, which I think is so important to say, like, I'm the first one that my girlfriends would text and be like, all right, we're seeing some movement, like what treatments are we doing? Like, what topicles are you using? What are you doing? And I think it's just so important to be so open. And it all starts with us. I did not stay my age for the longest time. And I remember being like in my early 30s and I saw something about an influencer who I thought
Starting point is 00:29:56 was like 30. And it turned out she was 36. And I was like, oh, oh my God. She's so old. And I looked at her different. I had internalized, you know. And then when I got to like 37, 38, I was like, you know what? Something shifted. Now it's like my hook. I mean, it's what makes my content reform. Now you're like, I will use this. That's why I say it all the time. But yeah, I'm very open that like I do all the things. And even still doing all the things, my skin is still aging. Like that I think is something that I. Thank you. But it's still aging. Like it's different. It's better now in a lot of ways than it was many years ago. Like my skin is much better at 33 than it was when I was 23. Oh, God, yeah. I was doing all the things. I was stripping my barrier down to the bone.
Starting point is 00:30:42 Oh, my God. I was just getting so, and that's why I just have so much sympathy for everyone because like I've been in the industry my whole life. I've been, I've had incredible access to experts and I have still fallen. Yeah. But a lot of the mixed messages in the industry. So, and so yeah, I just think, I think it's, it's so common in our space. So I think it's really, I think it's so important for women to just.
Starting point is 00:31:04 be really open. And I think you do that so beautiful. Thank you. What are some big drivers of skin aging that people might not think about? We talked about sun, obviously, lifestyle, but are there things that people don't think of? Yeah, it's, it's kind of the ones that we all know. It's sun, it's stress, it's lifestyle, it's what you eat, it's alcohol, like all of those things are breaking down your collagen every single day. And I definitely went through, as I touched on, I was a ballerina growing up. I definitely went through the quest of ultimate wellness in my 20s. And through that, I was definitely unwell.
Starting point is 00:31:46 Like I was gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free doing all of the things. And whereas now I love a glass of wine. I love having like pasta at dinners and have, I love a group pizza. Like I love all, which is like a healthified-ish. But I just like I'm very balanced with the foods that I ingest and with. also enjoying life. I think that that's so important. But what I do every day is what really matters and what I'm doing consistently. So I think living your life, it being really aware of controlling the controllables. I think that's what I always tried to say. Like control as much as you can, but you also want
Starting point is 00:32:22 to live your life. Like I think that's, I think that's so important. I think we've all been on our own journey with that. So yeah, I think it's all of those lifestyle factors that I mean we all know. Yeah. Something that I also heard you talking about on a podcast that I appreciated was like you're so meticulous with your own product. But to your point of what you're saying now, like I remember you saying that you took like a certain electrolyte that I won't name. And you're like, yeah, does it have like a few things that I'm not going to like consume in massive doses? Yeah. But like at the same time, you know, it's like you have to live. I like to flavor my water a little bit sometimes.
Starting point is 00:32:58 I like, it's a quartered. Same. And then I don't drink. And I'm like, that's probably worse. So I will just add a quarter of a packet into my water to like flavor it. And then it's, yeah, I think you have to control the controllables. You're not going to be, get 100% every day with what you're doing, what you're ingesting, your topicles, all of those things. But just do your best.
Starting point is 00:33:19 And also just like know the decisions that you're making on a day-to-day basis. So I think that's important. When it comes to your own skincare and beauty practices, what do you think is worth splurging on? I love this question. So I travel a lot for work. I am the CEO of a business that's growing really rapidly and I have a lot of pressure on me. So I think, which I love, but for me having those moments to have downtime is so important. So I used to get a facial like once a year.
Starting point is 00:33:51 Now I go every eight weeks and it's so relaxing. It's like a half body massage whilst I'm having a facial. And it's like my time for me. So I really see that as maintenance for my skin health as well as relaxation to kind of downregulate and just balance out my nervous system. And then I think so that, I think regular facials have been part of my routine for the past year. And then Emily Montague, she's phenomenal. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:21 Studio City. She's got the most beautiful skin studio. She is incredible. So Emily, she worked with Shawnee Darden. Okay. I love Shawnee. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:30 She's amazing. So I see Emily and then what else is, I think just a few active topicals and then obviously your ingestibles and then strategic treatments. I think that it's worth spending money on because otherwise you're going to have issues with your skin from either being to expose to environmental factors or not ingesting the right supplements and then you will see that in your skin and then you have to go to a dermatologist just to actually fix the issue, whereas you can have just a few really strategic choices that you integrate every single day. And then that's how you're taking care of yourself for the long
Starting point is 00:35:09 term. So I don't really say them as splodges. I mean, like, that's probably just me being bougie and like loving with me after myself. But yeah. I mean, self-care. Yeah. It's so important. I think like that's how we all feel our best. I mean, I have to show up every single day for my team, the business. Like, for myself, for my family, for my partner. So I think, like, yeah, we all want to feel good. Like, we all want to feel good. We all want to look good. You want to feel your best.
Starting point is 00:35:35 Yeah. So I think it's a confusing world out there. Okay. I want to close with some rapid fire. Most underrated ingredient. I think risperatrol. It's in our advanced skin multivitamin that we launched in January. And we have such incredible clinicals behind this product.
Starting point is 00:35:52 And it's such a great ingredient that so many dermatologists recommend. And they pair that with collagen peptides. and you see such incredible results. It protects your skin from oxidative stress. It's a master antioxidant. You can see really incredible results in the skin. Luxury beauty purchase worth every penny. Could be makeup.
Starting point is 00:36:12 I use the current body LED mask. I think that that's great. I think there are so many LED masks on the market, and I really love that one and the Omni-Lux. I think they're both really great. And I think that's so worth well. Luxury purchase you could skip. This is beauty.
Starting point is 00:36:26 Anything. The Dyson. The air wrap? Yeah, I had an air wrap and I let my hair air dry and I use a hot brush. And I love it. Oh, the main? The main. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:42 Yeah. Life changing. And like, I was like, well, I was doing. Oh, that's where I go too. Oh, I was like. No, I go to Tarnie. And I was like, what have I done before this brush? So I love it.
Starting point is 00:36:53 And it's $100. And it's the best. Like, it's such a great tool. And it's, I feel. like it's not as damaging because I let my hair dry and then I just run that through. So I think that I truly, I don't know what I did before that. I'm like, I literally said that this one. I was like, what did I ever do before this? Jen Akin, a genius. She is. She truly is. One wellness habit that shows up on your skin. For sleep and diet. Lack of nutrients will show up on your skin and then lack of
Starting point is 00:37:23 sleep will definitely show up on your skin. And we all feel it like we all know like if you've been not eating well if you've not been looking after yourself if you've not been sleeping like we can all see it this morning i was like guashering because i was like right feel deeper deeper yeah okay i'm gonna finish with some really quick this or that sunscreen or retinoid sunscreen facial or laser oh that's so hard i love both i would say laser because i just think that's when it really rejuvenate your skin for the long time sauna or cold plunge Sona. I hate a cold plunge. I hate it. Morning shower or evening shower? Both. I love a shower. Yeah. My partner's like, I'm going to start putting the water bill like on my shower screen at this point. You have to shower at the end of the day. Oh, I could not get the day off. I think like, I don't want to be judgmental. If my boyfriend doesn't shower, I'm like, get in. Oh, no. I'm a lunatic though. I think my mother just raised me in a bizarre way. I will sit on the bed. I won't get into bed because I have my outside clothes on. Yeah, no, he gets in bed in his outside clothes.
Starting point is 00:38:29 Absolutely not. Oh, my God. No, I cannot. Sometimes off the airplane. And I'll go and sit on the bed. And I'm like, no. Like, I can't speak. No.
Starting point is 00:38:40 Michael says that to me. And he's like, no, I've just been to the airport. I'm like, yeah. The airport. I know. Oh, my God. Okay. Last one, the celebrity who's the celebrity who you'd love to get your product on.
Starting point is 00:38:53 Who you haven't already. And you've had quite a few. I mean, like, I love Victoria Beckham. So having her was like, such a huge pinching moment. But I love Margot Robbie. She's obviously Australian. I think she's got beautiful skin. She's so down to earth. I really love her. So I think we actually, do you bra off her makeup artist? Oh no. I know of her trying to get her on. I should. Oh, I love that. Yeah. We'll have it all. Would you like a skin on?
Starting point is 00:39:17 Would you like to orchestrate that? Amazing. Well, thank you so much for coming. Thank you for everybody where they can find you and find for olive.
