Well, here we are.
Another Cholas rendition of the well-read podcast.
Me and Drew.
How you doing, Drew?
Do you have any existential crises lately?
Anything like that?
No, I don't think so.
At all?
No, you're saying that, well, did I say I did?
And I forgot.
No, it just, you know, just seems to happen.
We're 40 and whatever.
Yeah, well, yeah, yeah.
All right, here's one for you.
Here's one.
You know, I think I've said this on here before, but, like,
I think the only, like, artistic thing I have,
way I interpret an artist, which is like you almost like feel the world and then like you
transmute that into something.
Even that first part, like I don't feel like I have that.
Except that like when I get on a call and I can't like get a human and the robot is like,
I didn't get that.
I'm sorry.
It makes me cry.
I've literally broken down in tears before less as much out of frustration, sure, but mostly
out of like despair for the human race.
So I did have a modern nightmare in that vein recently, but I had to deal with humans who were dealing with it.
You know, well, it's saying.
Yeah, right.
You mean you were talking to a human who was using like an AI thing as its guidelines?
Yeah, I don't know if it was AI or what it was.
And it's wrong.
The system.
Yeah, I hate the fucking system.
And I'm like, okay, well, what am I supposed to do?
You're the guy I call for that.
Yeah.
So, okay, so when I was trying, when we were getting loans and sent all that up for the house, someone, one of the applications or whatever I sent in, someone tried to steal my identity.
Yeah.
It got flagged.
No one even told me about it.
I got checks in the mail from a Merrill Lynch investment account.
I called them.
I called them.
It took them a while to figure out what it was.
And they were like, oh, this was like a fraudulent account.
you know like we didn't call you because like we didn't even know if this was your number like
someone tried to do this we caught it pretty much immediately they opened it and we shut it down like
literally an hour later so somebody stole your identity set up a fraudulent account but had the check
sent to you instead of themselves as an error they made or something like that how much money like a lot
of money i'm not i have no idea i have no idea how any of that or why any of that went down
I was thinking maybe they were going to use that account as like collateral.
I don't know.
Tried to like not thinking too much about it, right?
Like whatever, they failed.
I got my power turned on and there in Georgia.
And then I went back, you know, I was like, we've been back and forth a lot.
I've been working on the house.
We're still tying up loose ends here.
I just showed up there one day and there was no power.
and I called Georgia Power
and they're like
oh we had
you know you were an unauthorized use
you know like if someone
moves out but like the power stays
on and then you're just getting free power
and I was like
okay but like I called you guys
I had an account
I can log into it right now
it says it's been closed down
but like
I even you even took $30 for me
to turn the power on
she was like well that's been
refunded to you and I was like
I get that
but you turned my power off
you didn't call me
you didn't email me
what's the deal
so two things
one the deal was that that
fraudulent thing is on my credit
report and they
understandably have a policy that if
someone's identity was stolen recently
you're going to have to send them some documentation
in before you can turn your power on
but that's not what happened.
They just turned my power on,
realize their mistake,
turn my power off,
but put it in the computer like I had never had power.
And so they're like,
well,
we can't do same day turn on.
I'm like,
even though it's like on y'all,
well,
it's not on us, sir.
It says here that you didn't even have power.
I'm like,
I had power.
I was like,
what about the 30 bucks?
What was that for if I didn't have power?
Well,
we refunded you that.
I was like, that's not what I asked you.
And it was just like a total modern nightmare of identity theft.
This lady that I was talking to just being like, basically like over and over again,
she started repeating like a robot.
Do you want me to send you the links so you can send the documents?
You want me to send you the links?
Like she's not allowed to hang up, I guess.
Yeah.
And somewhere I was like, honestly, I think I just want a little empathy here.
She's like, it's not about empathy.
And I was like, okay.
Well, I have a two-year-old.
He's not here right now.
But if he was, it's 95 degrees in Georgia.
You turn my power off without telling me,
and you're telling me you can't get it back on
until I send you these documents,
you guys process them which takes two days,
and then you send someone out.
We turned it on in Andy's name.
It still wouldn't come on.
Finally, and I'm sure this is a coincidence,
you call back and get a different person every time,
got a dude.
Mm-hmm.
Sure, it's a coincidence, ladies, got a dude.
And I was like, look, man, I can't imagine what it says in the notes.
But this has been a nightmare.
I left Georgia.
He said, and I was like on hold.
This was days later.
It's already been an awful week.
I worked on my house in the dark with battery packs on my power tools.
He's like, drive back and try the breaker box.
out, not the breaker box, the outage, what I'm trying to say, the wattage box, sometimes has a breaker on it.
I drove back, there's not one. I tell him that. He stays on the phone with me. He's like, all right,
let me call dispatch. I leave again. Both times I've driven at least 20 minutes, and he's like,
all right, drive back and go check the power down. There's no like crescendo to this story.
I ended up with power. But because someone tried to steal my identity, and because, quote unquote,
it said that I was like a fraudulent user,
no one would turn it on.
But you ended up getting it turned on that same day?
No, no, no.
That story that I just told you lasted a week.
Oh, wow.
Now, I wasn't there the whole week.
Right.
Partially, because it was too fucking hot to be there.
I slept in my car one night.
Damn.
Yeah, that's brutal.
It's always, I was going to say,
When you're telling the lady earlier, it's like, there's nothing she could do or whatever.
I hate when you're in that situation and you're sitting there going like, I feel like there is something you can do, though.
I have no way.
I have no way of knowing that.
And also, you know that I have, you know that I have no way of knowing that.
So when I, if I start saying that, now I'm going to be turned into the asshole pretty quick, but I just feel strongly that I bet there is something that you can do and you're just not doing it.
And that's what's driving me.
So every once in a while, and I have a.
specific example I can tell in a minute but like every once in a while you will have it be proven
true that there was something they could do the whole time and that's when you're like I fucking knew it
I knew it why did you just do it why did you make us all go through all of this you could have just done
that to begin with why did you not okay there were three people I dealt with the first one was
pretty shitty unhelpful and like being a dick trying to get me to hang up the second one was just
like I don't know what to do politely
and my response to her was like
hey I believe you
but then what do I do
like how do I get power then
and then she was like you have to go through this process
and I'm like so in a week
I get it in a week
you know then the guy was like
oh we got to do this and I was like so they could have done this
the whole
fucking time
but yes
to your point,
oh, I'm sitting there,
do you know what I mean
when I'm like,
okay, look,
let's say I believe you,
there's nothing you can do.
What do we do then?
Right.
You're the person I call
when the power's out.
Yeah, to get something done.
And you're like,
I can't get it back on
for a week.
How are we living in a world
where that's cool?
What if I was like
had a sick wife
who needed her machine?
Like, do you know what I mean?
Yeah.
another company.
I can't be like, well, fuck Walmart.
I'm going to Target.
Right.
Yeah, and that's part of why they can do all that, I guess.
Yes.
Yes, and before someone, and I know we don't have any conservative fans who would do this,
they'll hit you with you.
Yep, that's what government for you.
That's what the market is for.
This is a private contracted company that has the sole government contract.
Right.
That's not the same thing.
Mm-mm.
You know that.
You fuck with this guy.
His last name's Corbyn.
He was AOC and Bernie's, he's East Tennessee, but he was their campaign manager or worked on their campaigns.
John?
John?
John?
John?
John?
Corbin.
Isn't there a guy named John Corbin?
That might be it.
In the politics world, I don't know if any else.
I think that's it.
He's got our accent, and he goes on Fox, but he's always saying, like, to Fox and they're eating it up for a second.
He's like, well, I tell you what the problem with the Democratic Party is, is they want to, though they had all these government contracts to do.
things. And the Fox
news host is like jacking off like, yeah, that
the private sector should be doing. And he's like
that the government should be doing
without the consultants or the contracts.
Just hire him as the government worker.
Do you look him up?
I'm trying to.
I can find Jeremy Corbin
who's British, apparently AOC,
teamed up with him for something.
And then John Cornyn
is a Texas Republican or was a Texas
Republicans. I don't know. I can't figure out. I just got his
name wrong. But
anyway
but anyway
it's a private company
who has the sole government contract
so it's the
perfect combination
it's like the worst of both worlds
it's like inverse blade
all the shitty parts
none of the upsides
yeah like I
don't make this brief
but you know me but I like
I'm in hotels all the time
so many countless hotels
can't have for 10 straight years
I've
had never once had a hotel
not be able to check me in by the listed check-in time, right?
It's, I get when they're like checking, it's 1 p.m.
and they're like, check-ins not until 3.
There's no rooms ready yet.
That don't hit for me because plenty of hotels make that work, but whatever, that's fine.
That's outside the rules.
That's a perk when you pull that off.
So when you don't, whatever.
But the check-in time, though, you better have a room ready by the...
Again, I've never ever had it happen, except I went to the Hilton in Easton Town Center in Columbus, Ohio.
I'll call them out. I don't give a fuck.
Went there once, and the check-in time was four, and they didn't let me in my room until like 6.30,
and my show at the comedy club was at 7 o'clock.
And I went up there every 15 minutes after 4 o'clock, being like, look, the check-in was 15, 30, 45 an hour, whatever minutes ago.
It'd be like, and I'm sorry, I know you don't care, but I have a show I have to do that's going to,
and I need to take a shower.
I need to put on my, I need to iron the shirt, whatever.
And they finally let me in, and that just pissed me off.
but it's the only time it ever happened
until I went back to that same hotel
that first time the whole time
front desolay is like there's no room I don't
have a room I'm so sorry I there isn't a room
I can give you I come back
the very next year I walk I told Travis
Irvine her buddy I was like don't even take me there until
4 o'clock I was like because I don't want
I don't want to fucking get mad
so I get there after checking time like 410 I walk up
she's like unfortunately there are no
rooms available right now
and I went in this whole thing trying to be
I was like I was like
listen so I know you don't know any of this it's fine about I come here every year I was here
last year this happened last year I'm working at the comedy club my shows and last time I didn't
get into my room until and so all I'm asking is is that about to happen again right now
because if it is I need to do so I need to go somewhere else or something if this is going
to be another and this manager was walking by and like overheard this and like he was like
kitty stepped in he's like sorry let me check something he like moved her out
the way and then he just gave me
a room right then.
So like there had been a room
you know and I was and again
I was like I fucking knew it last year
I knew it and it's like
I don't know if they just put shit like that
aside for problematic
guests or the ones that are
chill you know what I mean?
Just let them be fucked up the butt
until somebody carons out
and then they have like an emergency caron grenade
that they can pull and throw and that's what that makes
no sense. I know if the fucking
piss me. And I don't go to that hotel anymore
and I'm not going to. But
yeah. That's happened to me twice and
I'm at the same hotel and both times I'm like
look I think I know what's happened here.
The rooms are supposed to be ready before and they're just not.
Yeah, right. But I do feel like you
should be offering me something
because of that other than like
one drink at the bar.
Right. But they
you know, don't care.
A patron of mine wanted me to ask you
if you watch The Burning Man doc
on HBO, I assume, is the one they're talking about.
I assume so too. I told him I have not seen it. I have not watched it. I know that for a fact that it is executive produced by Elon Musk's brother who is on the...
I don't even know he had a brother. He's on the board of the Byrne project. It's a nonprofit essentially. And most burners hate him, hate that, hate the lady who's over the thing. And so they feel very,
strongly that it was um you know it's weird because most burner docs are a little unfair
because they try to make it out to be like that like just evil rich dudes but fucking young
sluts in the desert or whatever and this one tried to make it out to be something very different
but also not what it is um anyway i haven't seen it though well maybe that's what this guy was
expecting you or gal was expecting you to say i don't know because again they just told me to ask you
on the podcast because they wanted to hear about i guess they listened to this
this pod and wondered what you thought about it.
But maybe they were expecting you to say, oh, it's bullshit and it's produced by a
fucking snake or whatever.
I don't know.
I know it's produced by a snake.
That doesn't necessarily mean it's bullshit.
I have to assume it's bullshit.
But at the same time, dude, it might not be bullshit.
It might just have nothing to do with what the people who I camp with who've been going for
15 years built and have experienced there.
Does that make sense?
Like, the city of Nashville is ran by some of the most.
God-awful people on Earth, and the comedy and music scenes there are full of both nightmare,
Slop, and really great artists.
Yeah, right.
And so, like, and Burning Man is a city.
You know, it's an event, but it's a city overnight.
That's my tech.
I might watch the doc.
I haven't had a free moment other than one night in the last five weeks, and I got high
and had sex with my wife.
Put that in your doc.
Yeah.
There's probably some of that in there.
I don't know.
When is your wife?
When is Burning Man?
It's in like a,
my birthday is always in the middle of it.
So it's soon.
My birthday is September 1st.
Labor Day weekend is when they have Burning Man?
One of the weekends is Labor Day weekend usually.
It's multiple weeks.
It's a week and the weekend.
like you're allowed to come in with your ticket i want to say
friday night or saturday morning and then you don't have to leave until the next
sunday not the next monday but the monday yeah yeah
are you going to do you got the are you going to like take the
the we lied to burning man and shit or no i mean maybe when he's like eight if he wants to
go but no i would like i would have loved to have gone this year
uh with or without annie i don't think there'd been a way to do it with her
and not take him, and I'm not interested in that.
I would go without her, but it wouldn't be worth the pain that would cause me in my life
in terms of her just being mad at me, you know?
And then also just I thought I would be fully in Georgia a week ago.
Was it mostly just the power thing that's kept that from happening?
I would say that that...
Or are you about to live your own money pit situation?
No, no, no. I've been remodeling, but like it was elective.
The house was absolutely move inable.
I would say there's four things that are keeping me from being there full time,
and at least one of them is funny,
and it kind of leads into something I want to talk about, which is this something.
One is the power that set me way back.
Two is with or without the power.
While I am not unskilled, I'm very proud of the bar I built.
I posted it.
That's how proud I am.
I am so goddamn slow because I lack experience.
These skills are present but not sharp.
And so what would have taken a real handyman eight hours has taken me 30 or 40.
Yeah.
Three, due to various reasons, most of which are valid, several people who were supposed to be there with me or come with me have canceled on me.
So just as one example, we have a cast iron.
old farmhouse orange sink I need to lift that to redo the counters and I like I guess if I
turned all the water off unhooked everything and then like I would break a cabinet
trying to get that out of there by myself I can't do it by myself mm-hmm but
Brian's coming next weekend he's supposed to come last weekend I forgot what the
oh and then the fourth one is just like my wife has kind of accidentally become a
become a boss bitch she runs her company and she hates it and it's just like it's just like hard
two-year-old i need just need to get it ready and i need to pack up the truck and i need to take all
our stuff down there and i need to put it in whatever rooms it goes in and then she needs to
drive down and just have to clean and organize because that's just how it needs to happen and since
it needs to happen that way.
It's taken forever.
Can you talk, it's fine if you can,
but can you're talking like vague terms
at least about Andy's like
new corporate lifestyle or whatever?
It's not corporate.
Is she like working from home at least?
Yeah, it's not corporate and honestly
with the money that she makes,
people who have actual corporate jobs
if they understood the amount
of money she makes and what she's doing,
they would recognize that she's
particularly talented for this job she's very well suited for it that's why she ended up getting promoted
but like she is very lucky and she is aware of that she runs an online art school
online art school yes okay she i've asked you this before i haven't we talked about this on here
i don't know about on here uh but what she essentially does is well she does it all so that would be
like dealing with artists, some of whom
are niche famous and nightmares.
Some of whom are like
papas, who just happen to be
ridiculously gifted and really sweet
to her.
And they're millionaires, and they kind of do this
for fun. She deals
with old rich ladies
mostly as the students.
And they're a nightmare, even the
nice ones because they don't know how anything
works online.
And then she has
to deal with her entrepreneurial boss.
who founded the company and just literally takes out hundreds of thousands I shouldn't be saying all this but literally takes out thousands upon thousands of dollars frequently to fund his lifestyle and then it's just like oh yeah sorry we're out of money but it'll come in soon and she's like well I have to pay the artist so this is cool yeah it's wild how I don't know all these whatever cottage industries or whatever they are like a thing I just found out about do you know what and I'm first of all I'm about to butcher this if there are people listening that work on it or even know
about it they're about to be like wow that was way off probably but you've ever
heard of first of all the name WOP it's either W HOP or W-O-H-P I don't know I know
what that's Pussy right I don't even know what that stands for but it's like an
online marketplace for like digital gig shit so like for example I think you can
get on there and like as comedians you know how it's like you're like I need
somebody to make my clips or whatever
right you can like post that on there like a task rabbit type thing or whatever and there are people who's like full time jobs is looking through these like campaigns that people are essentially putting out RFPs for whatever and then you can like sign up just like yeah I'll make clips for this dude for this amount of money or whatever else and it's all based and they're like thumbnails YouTube shit's all like maybe not all but per my interest where I found out about it it's all like
internet content economy based and shit apparently right that makes sense it does make sense but
I also just thought it was wild as soon as I saw it I was like well of course this is a thing
but it makes sense that there's like a is it like almost exclusively foreign workers doing
the money they're faceless you know you don't see them but I know there's I've had a bunch of
them reach out to me I had this one dude reach out to me and he showed me some clips he made
and the price was like unbelievable
and I had to like kind of go through it in my head
like is this somehow
am I becoming a part of the problem here
but then he sent him to me
and he just used AI
like what he sent me to like show off his skills
was legit but then he just sent me AI clips
with like AI'd
captions and I was like
all right dude I'm not ever using you again
but cool
right yeah
so that's the context
in which I saw it, but it says it's an online platform for selling digital access,
such as paid Discord communities, courses, memberships, and software,
over $4 billion in annual e-commerce.
I don't know.
You can set up, it's like Etsy, but for this type of shit, I guess.
Okay.
So it sounds like they're also teaching people things, too.
Like, we can do clips for you, or we can teach you how to do clips.
Yeah, I guess.
I don't know.
Andy needs to tell some of her clients about this thing so that they know how to literally how to open a goddamn email.
Right.
So here's my, is this anything?
I told a version this on stage last night and this is how I opened it.
I think I had it different in my notes, but rather than check my notes, I'll just remember that I opened it this way.
If you have someone in your life who would it comes to like handiwork, remodeling,
whatever at your home, working on your car, and they say, oh, you'll be fine.
Just watch a YouTube on it.
That person hates you, wants you to be unhappy, and kind of hopes you die.
I've worked on my house for the last two weeks.
I've almost died seven times that I know of.
Whether it be a counter almost falling on my head, something.
with the roof scaring me and making me think I was going to fall off it.
We're just cutting into electrical wires.
I don't if you guys have ever opened up a wall.
There's just wires everywhere in there.
It just looks like a guy named Randy who was on meth, put the wiring in because that's
what happened in the 60s.
So you go to, you're like, hey, I need a hole here.
Well, fucking be careful.
You could die.
Right.
You literally cut through live electrical wires?
I cut into one, not through it.
and then I called another old boy
and was like, hey, here's what I did to fix it.
And he's like, nah, it'll be fine.
Probably.
I turned the whole main breaker off too.
You know, you can just turn off the breaker for that part of the house.
Right.
I said, fuck that.
Every bit of power is off to this house.
If you're going to be fucking kind of wiring at all,
I think that's definitely what you should do.
But I think, hey, check YouTube,
just check YouTube, you'll be fine.
Is the reverse hold my beer?
Hold my beer is, watch this, I'm about to get hurt.
Hey, just check YouTube is, hey, I'm going to watch you get hurt.
It's a lie made up by Big Dad to keep you from calling your dad and making him drive to Georgia.
It's funny because, like, I sort of had an experience with this recently, and it pissed, it did piss me off to knowing because.
So first of all, the Jeep, I've had the Jeep for 10 years a decade.
And people always say about whenever Jeep Wranglers come up, the running joke with them is that, you know, they're like a boat on land, meaning like, you know, they're just a money pits.
Like, I hope you like keeping it in the garage.
It's not going to be running long, that type of thing.
Had mine for 10 years, I never had any problems out of it.
I mean literally any the whole time, just routine maintenance, nothing ever broke.
Nope, no problems whatsoever.
That finally changed when it overheated.
when I five minutes outside of LA it was about to overheating I pulled over it didn't like get all the way there but I had to pull over on the side of the freeway five minutes outside of LAX on the day where I was delayed getting home 12 hours right so I was like at the end of one of the worst travel days I've ever had the Jeep breaks down for the first time in 10 years but anyway in looking through it I happened to get picked up my lift driver that night was a rare old boy type in law
Angeles there's plenty of like old boy adjacent uh you know like Latino dudes you know
what I mean like old Chicoes I guess but Chico Viejos oh Chico Vajos yeah oh Tio yeah oh
uncles yeah all kinds of Tos out here but this is like a like a like our type of all I don't
know what he was doing out here but anyway he happened to pick me up and so I was just like,
I asked you something man he's like yeah I was like you a car guy and he was like yeah yeah a little bit and
And I was like, I knew it.
And so then I started talking about what had happened.
He was like, oh, he's like 95%.
That sounds like your thermostat to me.
While I was waiting on him, I, of course, was doing Googling and stuff.
And Google said, most likely culprit for this, as you've described it,
as a thermostat, a stuck thermostat, a malfunctioning thermostat, right?
And then he said that too.
And so I was like, okay, so it's probably that.
And all the things that had happened with it matched up with it being a thermostat.
And I Googled it and it was like, you know, this is not that big.
of a lift. It's not that hard of a fix.
Watch a YouTube video, right? So I made
Bishop help me with it. We watched
YouTube, went and bought the thermostat,
the new thermostat, the parts, some of the stuff.
And we changed it,
no problem. And it, like,
that part was fine. And we did all
that correctly and nothing's right. It's just
that that wasn't ever the problem.
So I changed the thermostat for no
reason. And when I, then I did
successfully diagnose the actual problem
on my own after that, and it turned out to
be the fucking radiator. And I
I was like, I'm not doing that, right?
So I took it to a shop and the guy I fixed it.
But it was like, what bothered me about it was, was that like everyone, everyone I told, everyone in my life, I was like, no, I'm just going to do it.
They were all like, oh, are you?
You know, everybody.
And it just kills me that like, I did do the thing I meant to do.
And I did do that correctly, but I don't have any leg to stand on because it was still stupid because I was wrong.
whole time. Well, don't tell anybody. I mean, you've blown it here, but like, yeah,
thermostat son. Yeah. Me and Bishop did it. Took two hours. Yeah. But back when I was like broken
shit, I used, I never wanted to, but I did all kinds of like car stuff out of necessity.
Right. Uh, and it sucks. And not like a handy guy, but I did a lot of it. I mean,
I'd fucking put a new fuel pump and Katie's old Jeep grand Cherokee, her ancient one,
they had 250,000 miles on it. And that was like, you have to take the fucking gas tank off.
I know.
fucking job.
So I used to do shit,
and I just can't bring myself to do it.
That was a huge pain in the ass.
All the other stuff that I did was like not that bad,
but that in particular fucking sucks.
But we didn't,
you know,
got it in my very handy mechanical nephew,
Zach,
put a new axle in the front of my
SUV.
And if I didn't have him there,
I mean,
I wouldn't.
I'd have fucked it up and then had to call someone to tow it to the mechanic.
I hate doing the mechanic stuff for two reasons.
One you touched on.
Yeah, you do it all.
And it still ain't the problem.
Yep.
Like, you can't diagnose it.
Whereas, like, hey, I need to build a new bar here.
Right.
There's some surprises along the way, like, where the wiring was didn't make sense when I got inside that wall.
You know, like some people got very tricky with their post.
but like I could see that you know what I'm saying like it is a question of whether
not I can do or I can solve this problem it's not a question of what the fuck is the
problem right nothing drives me crazier than that and then two I don't care how
many YouTube videos you got I don't care how experienced you are you'll get in
somebody will be like yeah man it's similar would switch no problem I've changed 50
I'll come over help you yeah right damn this ain't this ain't at all
like what I'm used to.
The video, you know, you're like,
hey, I've got a 1988
Ford Ranger with the
fuel injector, not
carburetor engine. All right, here's the perfect
YouTube video for that.
Guy opens up the hood, points the camera,
that is not what my truck looks like at all.
Now, look,
I can't be mad that there ain't a
YouTube video for my specific
truck, but this is why I hate
doing this shit.
Well, all right, let's go get the manual. The manual
says it's for all Broncos and
Rangers from a three year
mine ain't looking like this
but that's why I got soft
hands you know what I mean I'm a pretty boy
yeah
I'd rather do anything
maybe not plumbing
because it's under the house and it
often stank
it do stink yeah but I get plumbing
my brain I it's
pretty basic stuff
and then I kind of like doing carpentry stuff.
It sucks if I feel rushed.
I would love to do it more as a hobby than a job, obviously.
But mechanic and man, I'm probably going to sell the Bronco,
even though I have now hauled it across the country
and I'm going to haul it to Georgia.
I'm probably going to sell it for this reason.
I'm going to drive it until it's not driving.
Then I'm going to take it to a mechanic and pay a lot of money
for him to figure it out and fix it.
then I'm going to sell it to hopefully a frat boy.
I just got it in my head that a fratboy is going to find it online
or see me driving around town with a for sale sign and be like, yeah.
I mean, in Athens, yeah, probably a pretty good shot of that, I would imagine.
It's going to be like Happy Gilmore when he goes to high school and his pop denim collar and his...
Yeah, well, on that note...
I have to Gilmore, Billy Madison.
On that note, I hadn't really even thought about it until this exact moment because Athens is
cool and everything. We both like
southern college towns, but like
what about that part of it?
Like there's also a whole like, I don't know,
whatever, hippie art community and stuff
in Athens too, right? Every time
I go and do like Charlie Goodnights
and Raleigh, it's near NC State
campus. Yeah. And I just
feel like the oldest
piece of shit the whole time I'm there.
Yeah. You know what I mean? And so
even though I love like visiting
like a southern college town, like Knoxville's a whole
whole ass city, but like a smaller town, it's like
The college is the main thing.
Like, I don't know.
It makes me feel old.
I feel like, you know.
I've been thinking that all the time, I think.
So there's a, there's a real towny vibe, like, known, acknowledged.
Like, there was a party the other night at the 40 watt called the end of wet hot towny summer.
There is like this sting of townies and college students.
And I was thinking about it the other day.
Right now, the big controversy is they're trying to just monetize downtown parking everywhere you go.
whatever company they've given the contract to
is just like gouging people
and I was thinking about how everything
in this town from my visiting here
and moving here
it's like townies versus the college kids
and it's the university
people who have the university's interest in mind
being like we're the only reason this town is running
and it's the town is going
yes but all these kids are tourists here
and I'm like here's an issue
where we're all on the same page
a company that ain't even from here
so anyway my point being is there is a very
distinct towny culture there. It's street to street. It's bar to bar downtown. When you leave
downtown, like you go to five points, you'll see some college kids, but that's more townies
and or graduate students. There's a lot of graduate. So like, the only time it really happens
me, honestly, is one of my best friends there runs a bar, and it is known as a towny bar historically.
She loves music and is really good at booking bands and has very much turned it into a younger
person's bar late at night and like there are times that I won't be the only one where I'll be
there and I'll stay a little too long and it'll like happen around me yeah and I'll be like oh I got to
get the fuck out of here but for the most part it's like no I go to like the place where they smoke
that's my thing dude Knoxville just got rid of smoking in bars is going to ruin preservation
pub one of the greatest bars of all time and it's not because I think you have to be
was smoking a bar for the bar to be good.
I just know that if you can smoke in a bar,
it will keep out.
It'll keep out.
Yeah.
Like most problematic people,
not problematic in terms of racial jokes necessarily.
Yeah.
Or criminal records.
What?
I said,
or criminal record.
Right.
But there won't be a guy starting to fight because would you say to me,
bro?
Yeah, right.
Yeah.
Your friend, though,
sounds like she's got it figured out,
though,
thought, although if it's like a
towny kind of dyed bar during the day,
I guess that's a little different, but one thing
that I always, in retrospect, thought about
crawedaddies in Cookville where I met
Katie was that like,
from the time it opened until the
end of dinner time at like
nine or ten, it was
like a restaurant where like the
professors ate and business
owners and shit like that, you know, in
Cookville. But then after that,
it was a college, like wild-ass
college bar and it was both. And actually,
there's a place in Cudlow called Spankies that's right across from campus.
It's kind of the same thing.
Oh, I've been in Spankees.
Yeah, but it's like, I've always thought like that's, you know, that's the way to do it.
Yeah, that's kind of cool.
It is, no, I'm saying, but also just even just from a whatever proprietorship standpoint, you know what I mean?
You're getting, you're getting out both markets.
It would say, I think, I mean, I had to do it, but I was one of them.
But having to deal with those fucking drunk kids every night, that sucks.
But again, I loved it at the time because I was one of them.
It's definitely a dive-ier college kid bar.
It's definitely like not frequented necessarily by all the sororities.
Like, you, dude, you can walk by bars.
And by the way, they're super into country stuff, as you know.
But like, it is prevalent there.
You know, like bars with patios, kids spilling in the street,
a girl like walking through someone's vomit,
someone crying in the corner.
I'm just trying to get to my car.
and they're blessed in Morgan Wallen.
And it's like, it's not just like, I'm too old to be around.
It's like, I just, this sucks, right?
Yeah.
But, but two things.
One, like around the corner is a whole street where there's none of that.
And I'm going to this hipster bar to do comedy.
Two, I'm exclusively talking about downtown.
You know, there is five points.
Also, like, I'm going to be in Atlanta on a lot of weekends doing comedy.
like I ain't trying to be downtown all the time anyway I'm more of a ride my bike to the bar at three in the afternoon and have two or three beers and go home kind of guy now anyway yeah for sure that's the way to do it but yeah but I was just in Gainesville for a show and it's like first of all have you ever been to Gainesville I don't think I have I don't know what your perception of it was but I always just assumed that Gainesville was like a sense of it
eventually like a suburb of like Jacksonville kind of but it's not really it's like just out in the
middle of the fucking well the swamp I guess but it's just like out there by itself and it's like not
nothing to it really it's pretty small really it seems like it like the downtown part like Oxford
kind of yeah sort yeah and it was um but I was there in the summertime but I was thinking about
this while I was there because I was looking up like where to go eat or what bars whatever and you
could find stuff online you know obviously it's a thing people
being like, don't go to that one unless you want to be overrun by fucking, you know,
sick apps or whatever the fuck.
Yeah.
This is the one that old people go to.
And I was like, right.
So that's more my speed.
But yeah, you got to look into all that shit when you go to those places.
Yeah.
Yeah, I saw there, they're Emerald City Comedy Club in Seattle, which you've done, right?
It's near Seattle College or something like that.
It's near a college campus.
And I told this on here when it happened, but one night after one of my shows there,
Donnie was with me.
I walked out the front door of the comedy club and turned left to walk down the sidewalk.
And when I turned left, I bumped fully into a completely naked man.
Yeah.
And again, not a crazy naked homeless man or not somebody all messed out, just a dude out for like a nighttime straw.
It was like holding his boyfriend's hand or whatever and was just, you know, like a nudist.
But in a very busy area where no one else is naked and I, but we like every inch of the fronts of
bodies just like bumped it fully into each other.
And then as I was like fucking trying to process that that had happened,
as a turn it walked up one block up.
You alluded to this a minute ago.
There was like a college girl dressed up like the Joker throwing up on the sidewalk
and crying about how her mom would be so disappointed in her, right?
Which is a hilarious combination with the full Joker makeup, you know?
Yeah, for sure.
I think about the Joker being worried about what his parents think or whatever.
But it's just, and it's like you said, it's like,
I don't know, dipping into and out of it is fine.
But every time I'm always like, what the fuck?
This is, I got, I got to get out of here.
This is not my thing anymore.
All of this is too much.
Well, and I was aware of this, but it's, it is wild how it's,
so the kids just got back.
last night, which was a Monday,
it was kind of my first night being out seeing that
outside of like random times visiting.
But I go for heathens.
Heathen's weekend usually falls on like Valentine's weekend,
which means they're all having formals
at their frat and sorority houses.
So they're less out.
And if they are out, they're out for an after party dressed up on a date.
I haven't actually experienced Athens during school.
I am certain I will hate it, and I won't go down there.
Like, I like five points as well, if not better.
You know, less of my friends work in that area or whatever.
There's a place called Blue Sky Bar that another friend of mine runs.
There are some college kids there, but it's like a cocktail bar.
I'll go there if I want to drink or whatever, but, like, yeah, I think I'm going to be avoiding it.
I didn't move to Athens.
I mean, I moved to, like, be able to go to 40 watt.
Right.
You know what I mean?
I moved to, like, get dinner with Dave Barbie and our buddy Jared.
I don't, like, care that much, but you're right.
It's going to annoy me.
Well, actually, I just not thought of this.
I sent you guys, but we've talked about the general subject on here before.
I sent you guys a Reddit post the other day on the R Millennials,
the subreddit for Millennials, that was posted by a Zoomer.
I didn't say this to you, but I thought that was fake.
from from the zoomer asking the question yeah the way it was written maybe just someone who was
sincere but they had a i mean that that shit is rampant now but i mean it may also just be fake
but what you just said happens all the time well it was some of that phrase was like
the way that you guys and then it was like super complimentary i was like this is designed to make
millennials feel like we cool feel cool yeah yeah but even before that though it even if it was fake it
was playing off of a thing that people hear all the time, which, so the post of talking about
is it was reportedly from a zoomer being like, did you guys actually party as much as it
seems like you did?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Because that's fucking nuts if you did.
And everybody in the comments is like, I mean, yeah, kind of.
But there's been this whole thing that's been talked to death, I feel like about
zoomers don't do that.
And the alcohol industry is fucking taking it up the ass and all this stuff.
So like, I think that's over.
Okay.
And I think, and I think, I think, I think, I think, oh, there.
people are commenting on it.
It was just like
fall out from COVID or something.
COVID made people like weird.
I think it was.
And it also, the internet age
is going to make us question the
relevancy and usefulness of like
generational divides.
Because, you know, there's always a question
of when do you do it? How do we
define it? Like what makes a millennial,
millennial, will we say these numbers?
What about those, that experience
made the experience similar?
Point being, my understanding
is the older Gen Zs, the
with that and I bet you're right. I think you nailed
it immediately. It was probably like the fall out of COVID.
My understanding
is these young GZers
are nuts. Like they're back on
Coke.
Uh-huh.
People... Good. Good for them.
Yeah, they're fucking. They'd be fucking.
And they weren't fucking. The older ones were not fucking.
It was my understanding. I was told.
I was told the Gen Z wasn't fucking. I've been
told since. They've decided to be
fucking. Well, all right. Well,
crisis averted, I guess.
I'd be saying, play beer pong when I drive through
Frat Row now. Frat rows in between me and downtown, depending on which
way I go. They'd be out there. I will say they don't seem as
sloppy and I hope that sticks.
Right. Yeah, no. It was
a lot of that shit's wild because I've also seen millennials reflecting upon
like women in particular. Like, you see that thing
went viral recently, some Zoomer girl tried to honor like
ants jeans or something. She was like, the millennials really
fucking wears this stuff. Remember it was like the low-rise jeans and the whale tails and all that
stuff. It was pretty fucking crazy. Bart, ball. Jesus, bra strap showing from a, like a halter top and all
that. I'm a sucker for the bra strap showing. I'm not, not for a buddy. It all hit for me. I'm
saying like fucking, it was just, uh, wild juicy couture. And then the dudes just is dude,
just, oh, it was so douchey, you know. Super douche. Yeah. That was because of the jersey.
Ed Hardy and fucking all that.
Yeah, pick up artists.
Even Abercrombie, like,
oh, yeah.
Evergumby was like normal clothes,
but then we would do shit up.
Pop collars.
Pop them both.
Pook a shell.
Absurd.
Was it the French tuck?
Is that what you call it?
The front tuck,
the frat tuck.
Oh,
that's called a French tuck.
I mean,
I know what you're talking about.
Absolutely.
Who doesn't remember that?
I may have made that up.
I bet French tuck is something else.
It sounds like they'd do something better than that.
Yeah,
you'd think it'd be a little bit more refined.
Yeah.
but bent and my 13 year old has been
been wearing he got him a pair of what
they're not literal jinkos but they're jinko e
they're back dude he loves them fucking things he rocks
they're back all the time yeah so that's that's one of the jokes
i've been doing it's about flock
yeah i'm about how like
it's about how like the 90s are back
except we're on camera
right like these kids are like we're doing like 90s are back you know
And I go through something.
There's some jokes in there.
Like we invaded the Middle East for no goddamn reason.
Everyone's saying midget again.
But then like this is the huge difference.
But anyway, I don't want to get into that.
But I have noticed the wide legs are back.
I don't have a strong opinion one way.
I'll say this, millennial women, especially the elder ones.
Don't do it.
I'm not saying stick to your skinny jeans if you don't want to, don't.
but don't try to go back to the wide legs.
It just, you're just going to look.
I mean, do whatever you want.
But don't do it thinking everyone's going to like it.
That's what I'll say.
No one's going to like it.
You're not going to look young and hip or hot.
If you don't care about that, then why are you doing it?
Don't get new jeans.
Maybe just to feel young again, Drew, you know.
Well, then do Molly.
Right.
Well, yeah, no, if I put on any mild,
Pooka shell, pop collar
stuff to try to feel young again. That would
definitely not work and make me feel much worse
immediately. That's what I'm saying. I'm trying to like
watch my tone here when you talk to women, but like, no, do
whatever you want. But if you do it expecting to either feel young or hot,
that ain't going to work. That's what I'm trying to tell you.
I'm not trying to tell you not to do it. I'm trying to tell you not to
expect that result.
Ripped jeans
was like a thing for a lot when I was in
like college. And I went to
an open market side splitters. So I'm
24 or whatever.
You remember the professor?
The basketball player?
The guy that did comedy in Knoxville,
but he also taught classes at UT.
Maybe vaguely.
Anyway, so he was older than,
he did teach classes of UT,
but he was probably like a postdoc or something.
I don't remember.
But at the time, I was like this old man,
but like an esteemed old man.
Yeah, cool old guy.
He's a professor.
To make it clear, he was probably 34.
I'm saying in my mind that's what I thought and I walked into the open mic when I like ripped jeans on and he just goes he just goes he literally just said nice jeans right but he you know he said it like sarcastically and it just it just crumbled completely for me like immediately and that like I was like what the fuck what these are so stupid do you know what I mean like I'd warn them unironically without ever thinking about it at all thinking they were just cool and not
Never crossed my mind for however long, five years or whatever it was.
And then in that instant, I was like, I didn't put these holes in these jeans.
Do you know what I mean?
Yeah.
Like, why the fuck did I buy jeans with less jeans in them?
Why am I?
This is so fucking dumb.
That's so funny, though.
I fucking threw those out and never wore them again.
So, you know.
But you know what, though?
Also, like, kind of fuck that guy.
No, I like that guy a lot
if he happens to be listening, which I doubt.
He was cool.
You know, it's like just ballbuby.
Okay, let me sit there.
He was a ballbusty comic shit.
He was a cool dude.
But let me sit differently like, fuck that move.
Right.
Because.
And maybe what he was saying to you is, hey, dude, you're like a 25.
Yeah, that's over.
Right.
I think that is what he was saying.
But like, did anyone doing that to like a 19 year old?
Yeah, no, right.
It's different.
It's like, dude.
What?
you caring about this is so much
weirder than anything they do.
Do you know what I mean?
Right.
But if you're giving a shit about what someone does
is so much weirder than what they're doing.
Yes.
But you're right.
It's like you said,
it's like you're almost 25, bro.
It's time's up.
And that sounds ridiculous,
but I remember another experience I had at that time.
Like it's wild how that was another one of the...
Okay, y'all, I have no idea what just happened.
My whole computer just shit the bed.
entirely. I'm sure I cut off mid-sentence. I'm going to look at the files, see what it looks like. I don't know. Drew was booted. Everything sucks. Nothing hits. I apologize. I'm going to end the episode early. I'll try to cut just so you know that story I was about to tell is when I've told a million times on here is about how I went to the UT to do a show hosting for a fraternity event and they treated me like a fucking cop the whole time I was there and it made me when I was like no, I'm one of you. I'm one of the bros, bro. And they were just like, you're an adult dude. That was a general sense.
and it was hard for me to reckon with.
I was like, oh, fuck, that's just over.
I barely finished it, but that is over.
That's all I was getting at.
And thrawling, I know, especially not worth the coming back later.
For you guys, it's instantaneous.
I'm just pissed off at my computer right now.
I apologize.
Hopefully you ever hear this or see this or what the fuck ever.
But thanks for listening.
Go to Treycrouter.com and check out my upcoming tour dates.
Come see me on the road.
Check out Corey's substack and check out.
I don't know if Drew has shows coming up since it booted him.
I'm sorry, but look at his website and his socials to figure that out.
If you want to see Drew, wherever he's going to be.
That's it for now.
Thank you all for listening to The Well Red Show.
We'd like to stick around longer, but we've got to go.
Tune next week if you got nothing to do.
Thank you.
God bless you.
Goodbye.
Thank you.
