Starting point is 00:00:00 They're the liberal rednecks they like cornbread, but sex they care way too much, but don't give a fuck. The liberal rednecks that makes some people upset, but they got three big old dicks that you can suck. Well, here we are, here me and Drew are at least, Trey is in, is he back home? Is that what he's doing? Salina? He's in Salina. Okay, he's back in Salina. I assume enjoying some Dale Hollow Lake time, good time of year for it. So it's just me and Drew Butt.
Starting point is 00:00:38 By the way, since we're already here, I say we go ahead and do some plugs up top and at the bottom. I think it's what you're supposed to do. Every time I listen to podcasts, they do that. And I think we're supposed to do that. And then we never do because I don't mention it. But go to Corey Wrightsfor-you.com. That's my substack. Subscribe would make me very happy.
Starting point is 00:00:55 Drew, where are you going to be this week? next week I'm going to be in Birmingham Alabama on August 7th and New Orleans, Louisiana on August 8th Alabama and Louisiana in August for a red bearded man What a country What a manager
Starting point is 00:01:13 I have. I mean me. Yeah, I'm going to get cancer again And that's what I'm looking forward to Yeah, that's it. That's what I got on the Dias. How long are you in New Orleans? I mean in theory a couple days but maybe 20 hours
Starting point is 00:01:32 maybe four days it kind of just depends on a few things I got a lot going on right now I'm still not fully moved so I'm probably just scooting down and scooting back yeah I don't know if you remember but New Orleans is definitely one of those towns
Starting point is 00:01:45 I used to say oh New Orleans is like Vegas you know like two two days max you know and after that it's like I don't know but then one time we went and we played a show I can't somewhere i remember the show not being great which for the record and i say this with the utmost respect of new orleans the city i've never really had a great show there but i don't i talked to other comedians and they seem to be like yeah it's it's it's kind of hard too because it's not really a
Starting point is 00:02:13 you know it's more of a drunk city than anything if you go on at 930 uh everyone's blasted but i don't know if you remember this but we like ended a tour one time like in new orleans and i ended up renting an air business obviously before i had kids i ended up renting an air b and stayed by myself for like a week and a half and uh god damn i fell in love with the city so much uh and i didn't because i didn't drink every day you know what i mean it turns out that like that is fun but also it's a it's a neat little city and you can just run on food and have a good time without getting black out every every night you just said that the greatest city in america is a neat little city. I think that's so like fulxy. But I think what people, but I, but I'm saying remove the alcohol is what I mean. You know what I mean? Yeah. Yeah, it's not Bourbon Street. It's more than Bourbon Street. I mean, yeah, yeah. I think that, I think it's the most unique place in America. I think it's one of the few places that hasn't been homogenized. On top of not being homogenized, it has like a really deep and rich food, music, dance, art, culture, literature.
Starting point is 00:03:22 had filmed for a while. Yeah, HBO was filming there like every goddamn year doing something. Yeah, I think it's the best place ever. And as far as good shows, you know, we were doing the theaters. We did
Starting point is 00:03:38 Howling Wolf once or twice, and that was pretty good. Yeah, which is a rock club. But there is now a small comedy club there called Sports Drink, and I think he's trying to open up a bigger room, and I've had great shows there. I broke the New Orleans curse by just being in those smaller rooms. Hopefully, Andrew does open the bigger, because sports drink is...
Starting point is 00:04:02 Is it Dorff? No. Sports drink is like probably an 80-seater. I think he's trying for a 220, and I hope he gets that done soon. I haven't talked to him in a while. Glad on talking to him soon. Yeah. I'll be down there.
Starting point is 00:04:18 I hope people come see me. I won't get into that day. I want to stay a couple of days. It's just the worst time both there in terms of August and me. Yeah. Just not being able to handle that. And then just in terms of my life right now, you know, the thing that I've been trying to get done for eight months is so close to being here.
Starting point is 00:04:36 And I just need to get it done. Moving to Athens or getting a vasectomy. Yes. That's great. Back to what you said about. I figured I would get it done in Athens because, as you guys have proven for the last decade, you're much better at defense. That's very, very true. That's very, very true.
Starting point is 00:04:59 Dude, speaking of 80 cedars, like... And you just got a meds, by the way, congratulations on Athens and UGA just got their first medical school students just started. I did not know that. And I think that will drastically positively change the city of Athens as someone who's about to move there for the better. Well, first off, I obviously think medical, going in the medical field is great because we need people to save people's lives. but what's your prediction on why that will make the city better? A medical school, if it has a hospital, which I hope it eventually does.
Starting point is 00:05:34 If it doesn't, it might not, but if it does have like a teaching school, especially in the SEC and the money that would have to go behind that, just improves a city's health care system. Sure, like Vanderbilt. Exponentially. Vanderbilt. I mean, UT Knoxville's hospital has improved the hospital system in Knoxville a lot. You know, there's a couple of teaching schools in Atlanta, the one in Birmingham.
Starting point is 00:05:59 I mean, Birmingham has some of the best medical systems in America. You know, and it's in Birmingham, Alabama. And I'm not trying to disparage Birmingham. I love Birmingham. No. Only surgery I've ever had has been there at that hospital in Birmingham. Because there's great surgeons there. And I'm just saying, like, it's not a city where you necessarily would think that.
Starting point is 00:06:17 And it's just because teaching hospitals. I mean, NYU Langone is the best one in New York. It's New York City. The biggest city in the world. you know, blah, blah, blah, or like, you know, not biggest, but most prominent, whatever. And the best hospital there is the teaching one. I never thought about it, but Chattanooga hits real hard and, like, their best hospital is a teaching hospital. Well, in Boston, like a lot of the research that, you know, the cutting edge American research either starts in or comes out of Boston.
Starting point is 00:06:42 That's because they have two or three top medical schools there with hospitals attached. Also, not for nothing. probably a lot more hitting noodle spots will open up in Athens. You know what I mean? Like that'll probably be... Because of the Asian influx. Yeah, that's positive racism, I think. I mean, look, they like to be doctors.
Starting point is 00:07:03 That might be why that noodle place with the robot just opened up. They're them and robots too. Them and robots, too. That's the trade-off. You get the noodles, but you got to deal with the robots. Yeah, that feels like a way for Papas to talk shit on Asians pretending that they hate robots. that's very true the noodles
Starting point is 00:07:22 was positive racism but these goddamn robots right I just can't stand how they almost look human but you can tell they're not quite the same as me yeah it's something about the eyes they're never fully yeah so I
Starting point is 00:07:34 I'm sorry that was too much it's funny it's fine I can cut it you uh you brought a teach I won't uh teaching hospitals I think about that sometimes because like I well you know Scrubs is one of my favorite shows ever and hell
Starting point is 00:07:49 so is the pit. I mean, even though the pits only two, it's, it's, it's, I don't think you can say this is one of my favorite shows ever until it's had at least, what do you think? Three, four, four seasons. Is that the, wouldn't you say? Man, I don't know. Unless it was supposed to be a limited series. We've been doing it for years, so I'm, like, tired of, like, having a take.
Starting point is 00:08:09 I have absolutely no opinion on this. Okay. Why not? My question would be, why can't you say this is one of my favorite shows ever after first season? Is it? I guess you're right. That's true. How do you feel in your heart?
Starting point is 00:08:21 Yeah. Are you saying you might change your mind? It's possible. Because you don't know how it's going to go. Yeah, it's possible. Although... Maybe you just say it was. That's true because, you know what, man?
Starting point is 00:08:31 I can tell you this. It would be a feat beyond human comprehension for them to fuck the pit up like they fucked the Game of Thrones up. And I still stand for that show. So, yeah, I can say it. Pitt's one of my favorite shows of all time. Lost is the only show where it got bad and ruined it for me. but I think what it did to me was reveal that it was a bad show. Right.
Starting point is 00:08:53 Lost was... It's a page turner. It was Doritos. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. The Doritos are awesome. Can't get enough. Until the 10th or 11th won. And then you're going to feel like shit and they're going to taste bad.
Starting point is 00:09:05 So like, I didn't know that. You know, I was like, the mystery of it all was really hooking me in. And I was like, this is one of the smartest shows that's ever written. And it turns out. It was really dumb. It's easy to make something mysterious when the people writing it also don't know what the fuck is going on. You know, it's really, the Lost is something, I'm certain that there's more examples of this, but I think I got really lucky with Lost because I didn't start that show until like 10 years after it had already premiered
Starting point is 00:09:40 and everybody had already shat on it so fucking much. So my expectations were like, man, this is really going to piss me the fuck off. and like I can definitely see why if you watch that shit live you know what I mean like week to week why but like binging it I was like yeah I mean there was a fall off but whatever it's it's a lot it's a lot different experience and I tell people all the time like that with like people are like I want to start Game of Thrones but I've you know heard the last couple seasons are shitty and I tell them now I'm like honestly I think don't watch them well I was like A you can just not watch him but B I was like I think it's been so anti-hyped that you know you're you might get to it now and just be like, that's not that bad. You know what I mean? And you weren't waiting season to season. Like you weren't disappointed.
Starting point is 00:10:27 Yeah. Well, Lost is the one that comes. I'm sorry, Game of Thrones is the one that comes to mine for me where I'm like, oh yeah, I remember hating the end, but it didn't change anything about the rest of my experience.
Starting point is 00:10:38 Right. Personally, because what was so great about that show is it was a completely new generation of people. Point being like, I think they got John Snow close to right. Right.
Starting point is 00:10:52 I think they got DeNaris. Well, in terms of like how they ended it without the book. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. I think they got DeNaris close to right. Yes, I do. She's a fucking Targaryen.
Starting point is 00:11:02 I think they screwed up Brunt, wheelchair boy, Bron. Yeah, but that was so dumb. Odo was cool. Yeah. What's the Icy daughter? Oh, oh my fucking Lord.
Starting point is 00:11:15 Aria. aria was aria i think was the cool daughter am i wrong oh oh you mean uh the red-headed girl sansa yeah sanza was yeah yeah aria had the sickest arc but then they did kind of tapered off but then they gave her like this cool ending my point
Starting point is 00:11:32 anyway i'm getting long-winded that's your other podcast um my point is like ned stark was gone right battle the bastards had already happened right uh i don't like what they did the imp but he'd already had so many great moments i completely agree like you can't take that shit away and this whereas like lost was designed to make you think everyone's stories going to wrap up right and then it just like left you hanging whereas with game of thrones some stories had wrapped up
Starting point is 00:12:04 or petered out or whatever by the way jamie and um sercy sercy perfect you think so yep right because and let me guess if I can see why you think that because we because they had spent so much time redeeming Jamie that we all needed to be reminded that he was a piece of shit and actually didn't deserve redeeming and that he was always a piece of shit correct yeah I think that's part of it I think also they only ever had each other that's right which is a big part of why they both turned out so fucked up correct and the only thing I might have have been different is make them look a little more pathetic
Starting point is 00:12:50 in the end. Right. A little less, let's face this bravely, but it was also only going to end in death for them. Yeah, right. And as Jamie, you're not going to fuck your sister for 20-something years and then end up a
Starting point is 00:13:06 hero riding off into the sunset with a non-binary fucking sword slayer. You know what I mean? That would have been an awful ending. Yeah. But it was just like the way they guide together because, you know, in a lot of ways,
Starting point is 00:13:20 because of their own action. And greed. Yeah. Anyway, I just, uh, lost did not end well as a show, but it didn't ruin it for me. I can't even, I can't,
Starting point is 00:13:32 I can't even remember how it ended, and that's what's so crazy about it. I can't lost. I mean, Game of Thrones. Game of Thrones. Oh, yeah. I mean, I remember exactly how that ended. The ending ruined it in that.
Starting point is 00:13:41 It made me realize it was stupid. Like, what was the ending that it was all, hell or well they were back in the States and they were they were like famous
Starting point is 00:13:54 because they had survived that long there was no wrap up with many of the mysteries I can barely remember anything else other than that from what I remember reading one time was like either JJ Abrams or one of the head riders or whatever like they had never once planned for it to go past season four or some
Starting point is 00:14:15 shit like that, but it was such a goddamn cash cow that they were like, that NBC or whoever it was, ABC or whatever, it was just like, no, we got to keep making more. And like, they just kept not being able to say no. And they were like, and this is what happens when you don't say no for so long, you know? And it's like, do you just continue to take the boo-coos of money or do you end with dignity? And like, I got to tell you, I've never been faced with that situation. So I don't know. I can tell you that the guys from always sunny in Philadelphia have somehow done both. You know, they've been able to do both somehow. Not everybody can do it, though.
Starting point is 00:14:52 I'm going to look it up because I can't remember. But I feel like with a show like that, you have to have an end game already. Well, no, I was going to say leave some mystery. Right. I forgot about this. Forgot about loss. Is it something that you just now discovered about loss that you forgot about? it's fucking Jesus
Starting point is 00:15:27 just like it always is that's right Jack Shepard died defeating the man in black that's right sacrificing himself for the good of others and then made Hurley the protector of the island
Starting point is 00:15:39 but then there's a flat sideways timeline where there's well then there's real life and then there's the afterlife I don't know man I know bro it was confusing
Starting point is 00:15:56 but not in a hitting way. Yes. Like three body problem. Three body problem is obviously confusing, but like in a hidden way. Like in a like this is all science fictiony and like it's supposed to be over my head because it's talking about Einstein shit. By the way, Jack Hurley looks just like my aunt. I really wish I had a picture of my aunt to show you because it is remarkable. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:22 My buddy Luke posted a picture of himself at like 11. yesterday and said someone said i look like they're a bella and it was funny because i thought he looked like he was fat in it and he's not fat anymore i thought he looked like hurley you're right and then i was like if that dude didn't have any scruff i would definitely think it was a lesbian yeah right some people got that you know and used to there was a there was a looking like that to lunch lady pipeline and it's fucking it's over or gym teacher or something and now it's over to lunch lady but i know what meant, but it sounded like a show. Yeah, it did. It used to, you could look like that,
Starting point is 00:17:02 and you could just be a lunch lady or a gym teacher, and nobody would say shit. But now if you look like that and you're a lunch lady or a gym teacher, they want to check your dick at the door to make sure that what you are, you know, you can't, you can't just wear fucking polyester. Yeah, you can't just wear. With neutral mustaches were a thing that we had. You can't be a woman anymore and wear a windbreaker suit and have. have your belly poke out further than your tities and just expect to teach kids and used to that's
Starting point is 00:17:32 all you could expect to do you know and now you can't man i from what i've been reading they can't keep teachers anyway no and but can you blame them no i mean it really sucks because like it's one of those things where there's part of me that when when a teacher quits i want to be like well clearly that was just not your calling you know because a real teacher would have stuck it out no matter what because it's all about the kids but again easy for me to say because i'm not the one having to go do that and like i'm treating it just like it's a calling just like comedy but it's like in my thing yeah obviously comedy is very hard and you get shit on and stuff all the time but like we also don't have a ceiling you know what i mean like yeah of course there's times where we don't make any money
Starting point is 00:18:23 but that we have the potential to make millions and millions of dollars. And we, at our job, we get adored every time we go fucking do it if we do it right. They don't, you know. Well, let me frame it differently for you, though, too. It's like if someone came to you and they said, I was meant to be a comedian just 15 years ago. Correct. I'm not built for this internet age comedy.
Starting point is 00:18:46 Yeah. You've seen me on stage. You know how good I am, but I can't do any of the other stuff. you wouldn't think, oh, you just weren't meant to be a comedian. You would think, oh, you weren't meant for this time. That happens. You're born too late. It happens a lot.
Starting point is 00:19:00 It happens in art. Born too. Born too early. That might be a situation with some of these teachers, too, where, like, in the time they grew up and decided to be a teacher, they would have been great. Because I've been, I've actually been thinking about doing a joke about this. It's like, the teachers now, you know, it's like all the things that were already hard, pay. Right. Shitty bosses, kids who are annoying, parents who are annoying.
Starting point is 00:19:27 But now those kids and bosses have the internet and AI. Right. And I can imagine someone who is built to deal with a shithead kid and be an inspiring teacher and really love math or English and teach kids to love math or English or to love themselves or whatever all this stuff is. But then they just cannot handle a 27-year-old with six kids named Brayland, Jalen, Malen, Halen, and Kalen telling them they're wrong about the Vietnam War. And they're going to sue them or whatever if they don't do it right. Yeah, I mean.
Starting point is 00:20:08 Yeah, I would be like, no, I did not in fact sign up for this. Right. I mean, dude, I think Nick Sabin would probably say this if he would be, born 15 years later, he's not the Nick Sabin that that we know. You know what I mean? Like, I think a lot of the reason that he got out, he would probably say is like, I saw the way college football was changing. And the best thing that the thing he was the best at was recruiting and keeping players on his team and convincing someone like, hey, you might not start this year, but you'll be at Alabama, you know, and now that same player. And by the way, I'm all for
Starting point is 00:20:41 that player being like, fuck that. I'll go, I'll just hit the transfer portal and go start at UCF. make money. I'm all about that because like they're making money for the school to do it. But Nick Saban's like, I don't know this game anymore. I got to get out. It's like when, you know, Amber became a teacher because her dad was a teacher. So all the stuff her dad told her about, oh, this is how it's like and blah, blah, blah. By the time Amber became a teacher, that whole rule book was completely changed, which is why, like, and I'm sure you experienced this too, when like a young comedian like starts asking me for advice, I straight up tell him. I'm like, bro, I can tell you how to how to do it.
Starting point is 00:21:17 in 2004. Do you want to know how to do that? I can tell you how to do that. But like, I'm always like, bitch, you tell me. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:21:23 Please tell me. Like, you figure it out, you know, like I'm way funnier than you. I'll figure it out and tell me. Right. My thing is like always,
Starting point is 00:21:30 like I know it's cliche, but I'm like, dude, everybody's journey is different. And all I can tell you is, you just got to try really hard every day and never give up. Like, that's the only,
Starting point is 00:21:41 and I know that's shitty advice, like it, because it's so, but like that that's the only thing that you can do. That's the only thing I can do. that's the only thing I can fucking tell you because like I said I started during the fucking the the Bush administration like YouTube didn't even exist and like I also feel like I was born a little too early like I look at the dudes who were having success in the 80s and 90s
Starting point is 00:22:05 and I just feel more closely related to those guys than I do like even the people my age and and how you're supposed to do it now like I'm not good at maybe I would be good at crowdwork if I tried it, but I'm not willing to try it. And that's part of like, I'm old and I'm not willing to change. And part of it is because it's like, it seems like, whoever they is, like, wanting me to do it. And I'm like, fuck whoever they is. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:22:30 I mean, I'm pretty good at it. I mean, yeah, you are. Usually only in a scenario where there is a combativeness on the other party, not like, what do you do? Oh, you're good. Yeah, right, right, right. You don't start it. If they start it, you will finish it.
Starting point is 00:22:46 Right. But I do think, what was I going to say? Oh, I was going to do a joke and now I've ruined the tension to do it. Yeah, I got nothing on that. I just, in terms of teachers, it's a microcosm of everything going on, I think, right now, which not everything in culture relates back to this, but a lot of what's going on in culture right now is everyone believes they're an expert and almost no one is. and if someone is an expert, they're kind of outcast. Of course. Because they, like, their existence sort of, just by existing, they disparage. Other people who want to be experts. And they probably seem mean because they're so upset that they come across. Because I would.
Starting point is 00:23:33 Well, everything is wrestling now. Exactly. Right. But like people don't, but by people who don't get wrestling. You know, I mean, Trump is, he's clout. I mean, he got elected because of. I like the man. People don't know anything about his politics like him.
Starting point is 00:23:53 People go to tell me their favorite comedian, and then I ask them what jokes they like, and they've never seen them do comedy. Ever. They've seen him do other things. You know, my dad'd be like that? My dad's like that. Which is, that's completely fine,
Starting point is 00:24:07 but I'm just saying it's like part and parcel of what I'm talking about. I've been talking about this ad nauseum. I feel like I've been talking about it too much on Gravy Baby, but like the rise of the clout machine, It's like it's akin to nepotism, but instead of hiring your brother-in-law, you're hiring a podcaster you like. Right. That's preaches the same bullshit. So Trump made a podcaster second in line at the FBI because he liked him.
Starting point is 00:24:32 That's happening all over the country. And maybe it always was, but now it's like really pronounced. Well, it definitely has always, I mean, look. Go ahead. Well, no, you go ahead. I mean, it's always a little bit bent. It's always a lot being who you know for sure. We definitely just, we see it more now.
Starting point is 00:24:50 I mean, I've probably brought this up on the podcast. Now I'm not talking about who you know. I'm talking about who you're a fan of. Right. Well, no. Outside of what's like, I don't it's, it's strange, man. Yeah, man. It's strange that, okay, in like acting and comedy we saw it years ago.
Starting point is 00:25:09 Oh, you did a, you had a great audition. How many followers you have? Mm-hmm. and the world, maybe not me and you and other actors and comedians, but the world didn't care. No. And they shouldn't have cared about entertainment. They shouldn't have cared that people were ruining auditions and like making TV shows worse by caring about that.
Starting point is 00:25:31 But they should have cared that that was becoming more important than craft because that has extrapolated into everything. Trump is the best example I can think of. Donald Trump has no craft when it comes to politics. Right. He's just famous. Yes, he's famous. That's everything now. And frankly, he's famous.
Starting point is 00:25:52 And I think before 2012, most people would agree with this. He was famous for being like an asshole dipshit. You know what I'm? People liked it. Yeah, he was entertaining. But like, nobody would have wanted to. No, I'm guilty of this. I happen to love Vince Staples' new album.
Starting point is 00:26:11 Oh, yeah, I'm guilty of it too, but the people that I'm a fan of, I don't want him to leave the country. Really, really wanted to love it. Because I've been obsessed with him on social media lately. Every interview is so funny. I think his show was good. Yeah. Was he done something bad or something?
Starting point is 00:26:25 No, but I'm saying, like, I liked the album, but, like, I think I thought I liked it more than I did when it first came out because I was such a fan of him. Yeah. Well, okay, that's not a huge deal in music, but it's starting to happen in everything. Yes, yes, yes. Yes. People are getting hired and put in positions on clout, not on skill. Right.
Starting point is 00:26:51 And then that is coupled with what I'm talking about with, well, if the fucking head of the EPA doesn't know shit about environmental science, that does water down the expertise of an environmental scientist. If our society is saying that the most important position in environmental science can be had by a guy who used to be in banking, but he knows the Kushners, we're all subconsciously taking that in and saying, oh, because, so it's not important. The top guy has it, so it doesn't matter, so I don't respect you. So therefore, what I think about environmental science means just as much as what you do. And that, you know, our career comes from this too, but that unfortunately comes from. this. Hey, what's up guys? Right. Everyone is, no one's an expert anymore. Everyone's opinion is matters, you know, or like, it can be valid if you want it to be. If you want it to be. And it's, and it meant something to me when that guy said that about kids diets. Therefore,
Starting point is 00:27:58 I'm going to, that's how my kids are going to eat. And if you make fun of me for that, you're a piece of shit. Yeah. People have really misinterpreted, I think, the phrase my truth or your truth. You know what I mean? Like, like, because that is, like, because I understand, I can understand what that phrase means. Like, in other words, like, my lived experience tells me this. Like, anecdotally, it's this. Like, for me, this is correct. But these are all, like, things that are not set in stone things. You know what I mean? Way of life things. But, like, one plus one is, too. My, if my truth tells me it's three, that's still not the truth because it's my personal truth. I'm just wrong. You know what I mean? I don't think you can own
Starting point is 00:28:41 the truth. Right. But you can apparently control it and rewrite it. Right. Like I say, my truth is that drinking alcohol makes me very depressed. But I can't say it's the truth that making alcohol makes you very depressed because for some people it doesn't. You know what I mean? Well, I actually think that scientifically that would be very rare. Okay, sure. But you know what I'm- If someone said the opposite, they could say, my experience has never made me depressed. Right. That's right. But if they said alcohol is making you depressed, they're just lying to you.
Starting point is 00:29:13 Yeah. And that's their truth. They just want you to read these studies. Did you know, actually in the 1930s, men drink every day and people who drink water died quicker? And it's like all that's true. Right. A, they were drinking much lighter beers in terms of alcohol content. Right.
Starting point is 00:29:30 B, they were hard at work every day outside, burning through that. alcohol a lot more quickly, so it didn't have to be processed as much by the liver or across the blood brain barrier as quickly. Weren't eating processed foods. See, there weren't any, like, it's like, and then they were fucking depressed. What are you talking about? They would meet their lives. What?
Starting point is 00:29:52 Health care was cheaper. But they were, like, where are you getting? They were very depressed. They were very depressed. That's the, that's the exact type of scenario I'm talking about where someone's like, actually, alcohol doesn't make you depressed. And then they tell you. things that are true, but they're recontextualizing them.
Starting point is 00:30:10 Well, it's a nightmare. I'll tell you what my truth is, Drew. I am 38 years old, be 39 very soon. And I really, I'd say around 35ish, suddenly everything that used to be pretty easy to me, it just wasn't. And, yeah, I talk about this quite a bit because I like to talk and I'm a sad sack. but you start noticing these little things. And, you know, now I'm getting a couple grays in the beard.
Starting point is 00:30:39 And I started feeling exhausted all day, but also couldn't fall asleep at night. And my stomach was just holding on the more fat no matter how much I worked out. And none of it really made sense. And most dudes think that these are all separate problems. But the truth is that oftentimes they are all linked to the same root issue, which is high cortisol. And here's what I learned about cortisol. Cortisol is your body's stress hormone. And if you know anything about me, you know that I'm a stressed out SOB, usually over stuff that doesn't matter at all, but it doesn't matter stress to stress.
Starting point is 00:31:12 It's supposed to spike when you're under pressure and then come back down. But modern life, your screens, work, deadlines, finances, they keep your cortisol jacked up 24-7. Our bodies were not meant for this world that we're currently living in, but what are you going to do? And when cortisol stays high and your body actually prioritizes stress hormones over testosterone production, well, that's not a good thing. why you need to holler at our pals over at Mars Men because Mars Men is different. Most products only focus on one side of the equation, which is stress reduction or testosterone production, but Mars Men is different because it uses natural ingredients to support healthy testosterone production while also helping your body manage cortisol levels.

Starting point is 00:32:40 a thought earlier and didn't follow up on it can't believe that happened that almost never happens on this show I was going to say oh no yeah I can't believe it we were talking about teaching hospitals and like while they are great
Starting point is 00:32:53 every like we were talking about scrubs in the pit that's what it was talking about the pit why they're great for the community I don't know if they're necessarily the best that some of them are good hospitals anyway go ahead so But it always like, when I watch them on TV, I'm like, of course that has to happen. Like, that is how you have to learn to become a doctor.
Starting point is 00:33:10 But like, God damn, if I was ever in that situation where like I was literally fin to die and like it's because like it fucks with me enough when I'm like getting a coffee and they're training a new person at the register and I'm in a hurry. And again, I still know that they have to do that and there has to be a time when they do that. that. I know that. And so I know it's okay. But even then I'm like, God, fucking damn it, really right now, right fucking now at lunch, you've got to train a bit. You fucking do it, lady, you know? And if they got my, if they're sitting there and I'm sitting there having a heart attack, like, man, that's going to bugger me right off, don't you think? That happened to me. That's right. Did you tell that story on here? Well, I've talked a lot about the story of zero, but I don't know if I told this part of it.
Starting point is 00:33:59 And I kind of just thought of it. And, you know, I was. doing jokes about this and a lot of the jokes focused on how mean the nurses were to me deservedly so but on the way in with my clot when I had the blood clot years ago I was in my blood clot sounds like a second basement for the Braves by the way I was uh I was at UTK teaching hospital and there was a resident which is like a last of you know year you know last year you know last year student right You got interned, then you got resident, then you got attending, right? And then there was, I guess, interns or whatever.
Starting point is 00:34:38 Yeah. Lower year medical students. And they were trying to discharge me. Mm-hmm. And I was, like, putting it together what they were saying. And then I was about to show my ass. Yeah. Because the doctor who, I went to a regular doctor.
Starting point is 00:34:58 Like, I was like, I had a, I got a lot. I got her anybody listening at home. No, I went to, I guess he wasn't like a, okay, so I went to my doctor. My doctor gets me to referral to a shoulder doctor. They think I have a shoulder problem. He does sonar, was it called? Yeah, MRI, sonar. No, with the baby.
Starting point is 00:35:20 Oh, ultrasound, ultrasound. It does an ultrasound. With the jelly. Hands me the paperwork from the ultrasound and the pictures tells me, do not go home. Do not pass go. Do not click $200. Don't wait on an ambulance. Leave right now.
Starting point is 00:35:36 Drive to the hospital. Hand them this. Tell them you have a blood clot and you need surgery and that your doctor told you so. And I will call them. So I get over there, an hour's passed. And then I hear the attending berating. Yeah. Berating in the hallway.
Starting point is 00:35:59 someone and I kind of peek out and I realize it's my doctor which is both a terrible and a good sign at the same time. Right. What I mean is it means, oh, thank God someone has me. But what if he didn't? Right. This resident was about to discharge me. Right. With shoulder pain.
Starting point is 00:36:19 Yeah. And the doctor was saying to him, I need you to go get him a fucking ultrasound. Right. but by the way, if you had just looked at the one he brought us, you would see, you know, blah, blah, blah. You almost just caught your first body today, kid. Yeah, and it was me. Right.
Starting point is 00:36:40 And he was like, okay, so we'll blah, blah, blah. And he goes, no, no, I need you to get an operating table ready. We have to get this out of him or he will die. That was me learning it too. Because the other doctor had scared me, but I hadn't really said that I was just like, Oh, no. Oh, man, I think maybe I should call my wife. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:04 Because I was kind of just like, I think I was kind of on the resident side, like, so I can go home, buddy. Of course you were. Because that's what we want to hear. That's what I've been saying, man. Yeah. Me too, my shoulder on hit. That's what I've been saying, because I threw to me a goddamn touchdown. Dude, he's a senior.
Starting point is 00:37:20 He's done it all. He's passed all the tests. This is just a formality. He knows. Yeah, of course. He tried to kill him. me. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:28 Yeah, he did. He tried to kill you. Hey, did you look up to where he went to high school and if you played defense? No. You know what I didn't? I didn't. And I didn't have to look up where he went to medical school. I will say this.
Starting point is 00:37:38 He was a white man. And I don't know if this is racist, but I want an Indian doctor. Yeah, dude, for sure. I got a black one right now. I like how they talk to me. I like how Indian doctors talk to me. I like how they talk, period. It's a lot of fun.
Starting point is 00:37:52 Both. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, both. It's a lot of fun. How they talk and how they talk to me. I saw a thing the other day that was definitely racist, but it's super hit for me. If it makes it better, it was made by an Indian... If it makes you feel any better, it was made by an Indian comedian. You might have already...
Starting point is 00:38:07 Tushar might have been the one that sent to us, but it was like, this is why they never let Indians play villains in movies, and it was just Darth Vader, Bain, and all these people dubbed over with Indian accents. And it wasn't even like the Apu, like, horribly stereotyped. It was just regular Indian accent, and it was just... You just could not convince me. It was so goddamn funny, dude. It was so goddamn funny.
Starting point is 00:38:30 It's like on the list, like there are stupid British people, but my brain has a hard time with it. There are definitely badass Indians, but my brain has a hard time with it. I know. And because my entire life, I have grown up with the pretty much the only Indians I've ever hung out with have been either Tushar or the ones that I've personally worked with. And that's huge pussy, too, char. Right. Yeah, huge pussy. but also the ones that I've personally, either that have worked at the gas station that I go to
Starting point is 00:38:59 or that I have personally worked with at the gas station, who are without question the suwitist people on the planet. So when I hear that voice, I'm immediately comforted. You know what I mean? Because all I know Indians as as families that have always been great to me, that's all I know them as. Have you seen this group of dudes? and I think they're self-aware.
Starting point is 00:39:24 I don't think we're laughing at them. I think we're laughing with them. They just lip-sync rap songs and, like, hold the speaker that it's playing out of. There's three of them, but the main one, the alpha, does all the rapping. And the other ones just dance behind them. Indian-Fell?
Starting point is 00:39:41 No, but I want to say it really. So funny, because it's gangster rap. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's hilarious. And they're lip-sinking. And I think that's the right move comedically. You would be tempted to just do it in your accent, but then it's charactery or whatever. There's less subtlety.
Starting point is 00:39:58 But this is them lip syncing, so it's like, first off, fuck your bitch, and click you. And so just like how goofy white people sound rapping, that's how goofy Indians look wrapping. Of course. It's so great. Are you familiar with one pound fish? Oh, of course.
Starting point is 00:40:14 Okay. Yeah, that guy's the goat. That is the goat. And I'm going to share it for everybody here. Are you familiar with a dude who does monologues? into like in an attempt to be an actor, but almost always he plays the villain and he'll say things like,
Starting point is 00:40:27 you know I bad boy? No. I'm bad boy, but you love bad boy. No, I'm so glad we're bringing this up. There's this whole Indian subculture of the internet that I'm not familiar. Like I know some of it, but I got to show everybody one pound fish.
Starting point is 00:40:39 Can you see that? Oh, yeah. Okay, here we go, everybody. One pound fish. One pound fish. One pound fish. Have I have a look. One pound fish.
Starting point is 00:40:57 Have I have a look. One pound fish. Very, very good. One pound fish. Very, very cheap. One pound fish. Six, four, five. One pound each.
Starting point is 00:41:06 Six, four, five. One pound each. Very, very good. Come on. And by the way, he has, so that was, I was playing that from the Instagram that is dedicated specifically to that video. It's called one pound fish daily. But that dude has his own Instagram, which I follow.
Starting point is 00:41:23 And you would think, like, Matt's all he's got is the one pound fish thing. And it's like kind of, but he has been able to remix that one thing and hit every single fucking time with it. There's an excellent voice and it's a really catchy team. Yeah, and he does some different stuff every now and then, but it usually always comes back to one pound fish
Starting point is 00:41:44 and every time I think I'm going to get tired of it. And I never fucking do. It's always awesome. And I bet you also, he cleans up. I bet he sells a ton of fucking fish. You know what I mean? Like, he's a brilliant businessman. I definitely only have ever used that phrase, I think, with women.
Starting point is 00:42:01 So at first I was like, oh yeah. I bet he gets pussy too. Yeah, he's giving him good deals on fish. He probably is getting a lot of tail. I mean, it bears to be said, I mean, I guess for woke reasons, but also just like in terms of this conversation for real. I was just trying to find the guy I was talking about. Yeah. So I was talking in like actor, Instagram, Indian monologues.
Starting point is 00:42:22 And of course, what popped up was a bunch of great. of course Bollywood actors doing monologues because why wouldn't it? Like, right, like our algorithm is feeding us
Starting point is 00:42:31 almost the Zoom version of this shit. Yeah. Yeah, I'm a bad version. But that is what we get. You know, well,
Starting point is 00:42:36 yeah, it's just like somebody thinking what they, they know something about the South because they know not just like a goofy
Starting point is 00:42:42 character, but probably someone who's doing a character. Do you know what I mean? Like, I think that I've said it on here before, I think Chelsea Lynn, Traitor Tras Tammy is genuinely brilliant.
Starting point is 00:42:50 If you weren't from America and you saw one of her videos, you would have probably no idea that it was a bit. Of course not. And you'll be like, that's what they're like. Yep. And it's not not what we're like, but it's not all of what we're like.
Starting point is 00:43:05 And she's the most smartest fucking people ever. Absolutely. Her and Libby too. And who's the dude that's with him. I love. Rave, my boy Rave. Shut out Rave. Okay, sorry.
Starting point is 00:43:12 I just forgot his name. The only reason that the Bits giving away with him a little bit is because that's clearly a mullet wig. Like, that's the only way I could say that like... Oh, you're talking about Jeremiah who does their podcast with them. Rafe does their what you call it online series? What am I trying to say? They're all great.
Starting point is 00:43:30 We're online sitcom. You're talking about Jeremiah. Yeah, they're all fantastic, and I'm a huge fan of all of them. But you're correct. Like, no one would ever think that was a bit. They're all great. By the way, speaking to them, like, it is, I'm so glad that you know who the one pound fish dude is, and it makes sense because me and you, like, we, our algorithms are
Starting point is 00:43:48 fairly synced up because we share so many things back and forth with each other. but like it is it's mind-blowing how niche the world truly how individualistic are people's interests are because like I've got friends like who we're all really close friends and our interests don't even overlap at all like I will start talking about some shit that to me I'm like this has to be the most popular thing on the internet because I see it I see it all the time and when I see it it's got 10 million views, so therefore everybody's watching it. And like, people who I'm so close to will be like, I have no fucking idea what you're talking about. I'll show it to him. They're like, I've never seen that in my life. And it'll be about like everything.
Starting point is 00:44:34 There's an academic term for this. And I just saw it and I cannot for the laughing and me remember what it is. But you're definitely on to something. And by something, I mean the truth. I just saw this real. And the example the guy used, he was an academic. I think he was an anthropologist.
Starting point is 00:44:50 was there is I think he was referencing an article about this there is this sort of pretty popular this one is macro online notion that women in general are very unhappy
Starting point is 00:45:11 with everything millennial and Gen Z men and their dating pool and it's atrocious out there And if you have a decent guy, stick with him because it's just like they're, you know, living in the basement or they don't know how to talk to women or they live online or they're all conservative Joe Roganheads now or whatever it is, right? And there's this thing online of men being like they carry that into the date. Right.
Starting point is 00:45:38 Now their guards are up. Women are just miserable dating. And like because they're expecting that, it makes it harder on us whatever. That is true. Right. the trend that that reaction is to, according to this article, is actually quite small. Right. It's a micro trend that gets pushed by the algorithm, whereas most women are actually thrilled with millennial men and Gen Z men in dating.
Starting point is 00:46:07 They're like, they're very polite. They know what consent is. They're interested in it. At the very least, they're giving lip service to it. the negative experiences get spoken about, posted about, and now there's this trend of reacting to that, but it's based on a sort of false premise. Well, it's interesting you say that because, like,
Starting point is 00:46:31 I have a lot of girlfriends, friends that are girls, because my sister, hey. Hey, because my sister has always been like kind of my best friend. And I was, I just, I don't know, I just always, you like women, name three of their songs. All right, well, I mean, I'm a, I have, I've become a bit of an accidental Swifty over the past month just because she, please don't do this.
Starting point is 00:47:01 I was kidding. Go ahead. No, I know, but it's, it's only for, it's only for Bain reasons because she dropped a Toy Story song and he fucking loves it. And so I have to play it for him. And then the albums will come on. And I'm like, look, they're not great, but they're kind of. You better Swift me for like nine years.
Starting point is 00:47:17 Me? Yeah, we've been arguing about Taylor Swift for the better part of a decade. Yeah, but I don't actually, all I was ever saying was like, I don't think she's bad. You know what I mean? Like, I don't have any of her fucking records or nothing. Like, she ain't no fucking, she ain't no fucking Maroon 5, buddy. You know what I mean? I don't hold her to that.
Starting point is 00:47:33 I don't hold her to that high of esteem. That's bait. Huh? That's bait. Well, you, I'm, let's bait. What were you going to say about women? that I hang around a considerable amount of women and all this stuff that you see online,
Starting point is 00:47:49 these articles online about how women talk about men. They, the women that I hang out, and again, this could be just the women that I hang out with and it's Southern women and whatever. Well, it is just the women you hang out with and Southern women. But what you're seeing online is also a small sample. Right. But they, like, they don't feel none of that type of way.
Starting point is 00:48:08 They don't say none of that shit. Right. And it's, and like, that's why I, when like when I'm reading stuff online, like, and by the way, this is just my truth. This is just my truth. You know? Like, like, I owns it.
Starting point is 00:48:21 And it's just one of those things where like I do like, sometimes I hate using overused internet phrases, but like there's sometimes I read stuff people be saying online. I'm like, bro, you really do need to go touch grass. And by that, I mean, you need to go be around some people. Because I feel like all of your beliefs are just you read all this stuff on the internet and you never go interact with anybody. and so you believe that's how the world is.
Starting point is 00:48:44 And like, you've never met a woman. You've never met a woman. And you're basing your opinion on them based upon the ones who are posting, and those women have met two men. Exactly. And one of them was their dad, and they only met him once briefly.
Starting point is 00:48:59 Yeah, and on the other hand of that, all the women that I see posting all that shit, like I belong to a golf course where supposedly all these men that they write about hang out at and do some of those dudes exist? Of course. But for the most part, they just want to drink a beer
Starting point is 00:49:17 and listen to a song and hit a golf ball and like fucking, they're not half as bad as what you say too. Again, by the way, I'm not defending the patriarchy. I'm not, that's not what I'm here to do either. That's not a separate issue.
Starting point is 00:49:29 That's an umbrella slash foundational issue. But what we're talking about is internet culture. And it's totally fair to like blame the patriarchy and notice that like we got a problem with men. And we're talking about rape culture. Of course, dude. Of course there's a problem. But when someone is like, I saw this, this was a woman posting this.
Starting point is 00:49:50 I do feel like, though, we're heading in the territory of like, look, a black guy said this. Right. Yeah. Fair, fair, fair, fair. You can't call me right. So black guy said that. Fair. Fair.
Starting point is 00:49:59 But I did say this woman posted this the other day where it was like, ladies, that man you're looking for, you want him to, you know, whatever, whatever, whatever. He's 5-7. he's 5'7 and you're never going to find him because you keep dating 6 foot 1 dudes right and I thought okay obviously a generalization obviously this is for
Starting point is 00:50:22 clickbait but I think there's something to this where you do see some women posting about these horrible guys they dated and I'm like were they all fucking tens? Yeah right yeah 90% of tens are dicks right both sides yeah and every gender in between between like because that's what happened like you know what I mean you can be and so if it's in you at all it's going to come out like yeah I saw this real stupid it's stupid you got treated by shit by five guys in a row what they look like Catherine show me the pictures yeah did they have abs yeah yeah baby girl you're right those were trash people in their soul yeah you kind of are too because you only have one very specific type yeah I follow I follow a lot of a web comics because I'm, you know, I'm into comics and stuff. So naturally, I follow a lot
Starting point is 00:51:12 of good ones, but of course, a bunch of shitty ones will show up in my algorithm. And I saw one the other day that it was like pretty cliched and like not great, but to your point, I was like, there is a kernel of truth in there for sure. And it was this woman, she was like older and she was like praying to God, she was like, God, why did you never send me my soulmate? And he's like, I did. But you went out with his friend because he was an asshole to you. you, you fucking dumb bitch. You know, like, he was right there the whole time. You just didn't pick up the signals.
Starting point is 00:51:45 And by the way, there weren't even signals. He asked. He asked if you wanted to go out. He was perfect. He was perfect. I sent him right, do you? Yep. Yep.
Starting point is 00:51:55 Yep. The two flips of these, so we can be fair, bring, you know, some of our listeners are having a heart attack right now. The two flips of these. And statistically, women are more likely to have heart problems, yet I've never seen that in the wild either, which is correct. Oh, that's because we tell them it's indigestion and take a fucking pill. And then we tell our friends they were on their period and they die and we think they just never came back.
Starting point is 00:52:16 Okay, I'm glad we solved that. I have been wondering about that every year. Yeah, you haven't seen them in a long time. They're all dead, dude. The flip side of this is the dudes who are like, you know, they just want money. Right. And they have this story of like this thing that happened to them three times in a row. and it's like you have a type buddy right that ain't women that's the women that's you've been
Starting point is 00:52:44 going out oh yeah i did that right like you did this yeah i did that to myself yeah the person you're describing exists there are many of them it is a problem but you're not going for them over and over yeah yeah you're your your Einstein's definition of insanity or whatever you're doing the same thing then the flip side of the sketch or whatever you were referencing is God, why did you not send me my soulmate? I did, idiot. Yeah, and I asked her out, and she rejected me. And it's like, yeah, you were real weird about it.
Starting point is 00:53:17 Right. You treated her bad. Yeah, you were being a nice guy just to get pussy when you should have just been yourself and said, by the way, just so you know, I'm interested in dating you. Yeah, yeah. By the way, you're not a good person. Yeah, you're a bad guy. Yeah, your soulmate, you better be glad I didn't send you a soulmate because it
Starting point is 00:53:37 would have been a worse person than you. That's funny. You would have just, like, posting something for clout. Yeah. Of like, and if they're not like a comedian doing a point, but if they're just like, why did God not send him out of it? It's like, well, he didn't want you and another one like you getting together. Yeah, because then you would have made.
Starting point is 00:53:52 God decided you deserve to be lonely because you suck. He saw the kid you would have had and he decided that, no, not at all. Not in Texas in 2026. You won't even be able to abort it. Mm-mm. That kid was for the. 40s and sorry but we're not there anymore that kid was they can't have that anymore well all right fuck it the internet was a mistake internet was a mistake i think that's a good place to i think
Starting point is 00:54:19 it's a good place to stop and uh and go you know not kill ourselves but stare at the wall or something i got to get into air conditioning i am at my in-laws we are struggling we've got it on downstairs today so it's tolerable well go get you some air conditioner um i'm gonna go uh work uh work some more and then I am I'm gonna go talk I got a book talk tonight they around here and over yonder is the book of the month that the Chickamauga at our local little bookstore so I'm doing I'm giving a little book talk tonight oh that's sick dude I know it's pretty cool I'm excited about it I think they give a book talk no I don't know what I'm doing but I don't know idea why I said I would hate that well it's there this is different
Starting point is 00:55:01 than like you know we've done the book press tour or whatever but this is they chose it as their book of the month so everybody there will have read it and so I'm pretty curious as to I'll give you an update next week on how dude I had to do either well or poorly it went I had to do press yesterday for my show August 8th sports drink New Orleans Louisiana I'll also be in Birmingham the night before
Starting point is 00:55:21 August 7th at the good people's brewing I talked to this reporter boy that's a skill and that's one that if you don't keep sharp you'll lose doing media yeah I mean the guy was super nice. He had great questions. That was part of the problem. I was like, oh, good fucking quit. Yeah, right. Yeah, we're so used to just better done.
Starting point is 00:55:46 And I was like so grateful that we weren't on the radio. Right. Now, to be fair, also, I was with my father-in-law, we had gone to get deckboards in the morning or what we were supposed to. He insisted he go alone and then he lost half of them. And we were buying new ones slash picking up the old ones off the side of the road. And I think if you, if someone in Knoxville, If you lost a family member yesterday of a freak accident because someone flung deckboards out of their trailer because they didn't have them tied correctly, I didn't do it, but I do apologize for the loss of your brother or uncle. I should have insisted I go. We'll pay for the bumper stickers that you inevitably put on the back of everybody's truck to remember them with the angel wings.
Starting point is 00:56:29 But I will not buy the cross that you bury in the intersection, reminding yourself and everyone every time you drive by there. That tragedy happened there because I actually think those are bad for society. I saw this. I saw this comedian talking about how in his, you know, in everybody's hometown, there's always these drunk driving incidents. So there's crosses on the side of the road. And then they put like stuffed animals and stuff. And he's like, so he's like a, so it's a winter or as I like to call it damps,
Starting point is 00:56:58 damp stuffed animal season, which I was fucking hilarious. That's funny. All right. Well, Corey Rites for You.com. That's my substack. And there's a, though this is, I'll tell you later. Okay. Parts one through three of Here We Rest are already up.

I just got to do another pass on it because it got really complicated in a good way. Like it's the mystery's unraveling and it's a lot of fun. But I've written several more essays in between then.
