Hello and welcome to another episode of Whearwulf Ambulance. Hi Alan. Hi, Katie. How are you? I'm doing Will. This week we're here to talk about the Babaduke. The Babaduke. And in case you're a new listener, we are going to be doing spoilers. We're going to talk about the film in its entirety. So if you want to watch it before listening to us, please do. And Babaduke. Babaduke. I was not adequately prepared for how stressful this movie was going to be. Oh my god, right?

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, the entire time, it's just superthe cat, you know, there's no, yeah. It's relentless. It's relentless. It's relentless. It's relentless about a subject matter that I don't have, I don't have any real ties to because it's sort of like, it's basically breaks down to being a film about mothering. Yeah, motherhood. And relationships, but like, and grief and mental illness, I think,, perhaps. Yeah. And so much, there's so much to unpack in this movie. So let's get to unpack it. OK.

So the basic plot of this movie is a widow taking care of her son who has maybe hyperactivity or developmental issues. Certainly some behavioral issues. Probably due to the fact of losing his father. And the fact that his mother seems to resent him almost entirely. Yeah. And into their lives pops a storybook. Mother not knowing where it came from, it's very dark and disturbing, and it brings to them

some evil. Right. Into their home, right? Into their lives anyway. That consumes them. Yeah, I would say it takes over their lives. Entirely, yeah. And there's a bunch of other stuff going on and I'm sure we'll parse as we go through this. But so the gist of the film is the mother figuring out how to deal with this. At At least that's the way it comes across at first it first. Yeah. Yeah it comes it comes it comes it comes across it comes across it comes the way. Yeah it comes across it comes across it has an interesting shift where at the beginning, for the first, I guess probably the first act, the kid is so unbearable. He's like, just a child who's freaking out constantly, gets kicked out of school.

He's always like just whining and kicking and like, you know, being a child with some behavioral problems and you're like, oh my god, no wonder she's going to strangle this kid at some point. Oh, that's not right. Well, that's what it comes across there. There seems to be an inherent threat of violence. Yeah, you're waiting for her to snap. Right. And then when she does, the kid becomes normal almost, and she is unbearable. You're like, white, you know. Right, it's almost like the, yeah, there's a almost complete role reversal that happens between the two of them. That, the kid who plays the actor, the the actor who plays Sam, his name is Noah Wiseman. No, Wiseman. He is amazing. He was fantastic. He was, yeah, he was so good. Kids and horror movies are almost always terrible. He was like, the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, the th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, th. Yeah, the the th. Yeah, the the the th. Yeah, the the the th. always terrible. He was like Haley Joel, Australia. He was so good. You love a portmanteau. Oh, I really do. Yeah, he was phenomenal. I thought the whole cast in this movie was really, really good. Yes. So the director of this movie is Jennifer Kent and this is her first feature length. And I thou. Yeah. And I th the whole cast in this movie was really, really good. Yes. So, the director of this movie is Jennifer Kent, and this is her first feature length. And I thought she did like, I think there's some problems with the movie, but I think she was phenomenal for her first effort. Oh my god, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I wonder if she's, I don't know anything about her, but I wonder if she is a parent. Right. It seems to have looked that up, but. There seems to be an intimacy with the subject.

Yeah. I also, I really liked her handling of the interpersonal stuff with the main character and her sister. Yeah. I thought that stuff was really, um, seemed lifelike. Yeah, in a way that like I just haven't seen captured. I like when a horror movie has so much more going on than just being a horror movie. Right, right. Like at any point, the horror could have taken second fiddle

to the interpersonal stuff with the neighbor or the interpersonal stuff with the sister. Like there was so, there seemed to be so much backstory and life to all that. Yeah, yeah, this, we we we th th family drama in last week's episode with the, with Frightmare. Right. I think it was handled significantly better in this. Yeah, for sure. Yeah, yeah, it didn't feel like it was just padding. Yeah, exactly.

It was the, it was the backbone and the horror was kind of the excitement anyway, so. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, like sort of the skin, the skin, the skin, the skin, the skin, the skin, the skin, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, th th th th. th. th. th. th. th. thi thin, thin, thin, thin, th. th. th. th. thi thi thi thi thin, thi thi thi thi thin, thi thi. cast was just phenomenal in this. Like, I couldn't, there's the scene in the car where the kids freaking out. Yes. And screaming, like, it just hit me on such a primal level. Yeah, there's a lot of primal screaming in this movie too, yeah. Where like you're just, it makes your hair stand up. Right, and you watched it at home, right? So I saw it in the sound sound sound sound sound sound the the the the sound sound sound sound, the sound, the sound, the sound, the sound, the sound, the sound, the sound, the sound, the sound, the sound, the sound, the sound, the sound, the sound, thua, thua, thua, thua, thua, thi, thi, thi, thia, was, thia, was, was, was, thia, thia, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th. It, th. It, th. It, th. It, th. It, th. It, th. It, th. Right, I died. And you you watched it, you watched it at home, right? Yes. Okay, so I saw it in the theater where like the, so the sound system was

just booming so it points that was deafening. But I feel like it really added, yeah. It added to that like that horror. There's a lot of interesting stuff with sound in this movie actually. There's a lot of scenes where all that atmospheric noise will be getting louder and louder and louder and you don't quite necessarily notice it until it'll stop really abruptly and then it's like it's jarring. So I thought the sound design was really, really good and really made a lot of this movie. I feel like this movie, I complain about a lot of movies and let's have that sort no, you love them all. And I feel like this movie was like there they're there it feel like there were discussions was like oh you know when you're watching a movie and all the sound gets sucked out of it and all the sudden you're tense because of that and like so like it was it was a referential without being like pinpointable. Yeah it was definitely more subtle. Yeah one one one complaint I have in here in Katie's complaint corner which is regularly visited. Some of them look the monster sounds were clip sounds from video games like from Doom and stuff. Oh really? Yeah like that there's like I just I know it was low budget and I guess that stuff is cheap and or free because you hear it in a lot of things but there were definitely recognizable sounds from like PC games of the 90s which is. That is so strange.

Yeah I never got into that stuff so I didn't I didn't recognize those. But I mean I guess that's that's probably ineffective at being low budget. I think it was made for what, like six or seven hundred thousand dollars or something like that. It was made for the research I have done. It was made for two million. Yeah. That was the extent of the research I have done. And so far it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's the the box it's the box it's the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. that's that's to to to to to to to to to to to to to to that's to that's that's that's to that's that's that's that's th. But in this movie, there was parts where I was thinking, like, is this just an indictment of the

Australian mental health and child services systems? The child, Samuel, had clearly been having trouble at school for a long time. Right. Because they were ready to kick him out. They did kick him out. He was clearly having trouble at school for a long time. Right. Because they were ready to kick him out. They did kick him out. He was clearly having trouble at home for a long time because the sister, the mother's sister, the aunt says something like, I don't come to your house anymore because I can't stand to be around your child.

Why did they not get him help? Why did they not get him help? of just seeing like a counselor or something. Yeah, I think it was just because post her husband's death, she was just so broken. She seemed like such a broken, like she was just on autopilot almost. And the son was the only thing, it reminded me of that line in, something wicked this way comes, when the Jim Nightshade's mom says, when you finally leave, your father will have finally left for good.

Oh, I see. So it's that sort of thing of like, this is the last vestige. The last 10-tenuous little strand, I guess. Yeah, so she was clinging on to him. Yeah, but also you seem to be like a terrible reminder to you. Yeah, and wish I knew how to make weapons. I don't have that ingenuity now to make that stuff.

No, I'm in my 30s. If you told me to make a catapult, I'd be like, what? I would go on to, I would just type in Amazon. to co-com, back, slash, catapult. Yeah, he was definitely precocious. But also the child services people were completely useless. So, yeah. I was kind of like, and then also whenever she did talk to the doctor, the one where she who she eventually got a sedative serum. He was like, it would be a few weeks until you can see a psychiatrist or whatever. Is this how it works in Australia? I know it's like the most dangerous continent and everything, but like, is this how they're treating?

Yeah, I don't know if they have like a national health service and that's, you know, like, you hear about like the British having a waiting list for everything. Sure. It just felt like this, you know, we've talked about how a problem, the, the problem, their that could have been solved if everybody just used like psychiatry. Oh the psychiatrist from fright mare she became... Oh man, forced psychiatry. Yeah. Yeah on that front there was so much at work here because there's whatever's going on with Sam, yes and his brand of psychosis that he had. And then there was so much going on with the mother. Oh my god, yeah. And then she enters into a state of just being an insomniac. Yes.

And like, just heightened everything, went through the roof. It was insane of how, like, Tancid got once she stopped sleeping. Yes. You almost felt it, like you were also crazy watching this. And she sort of went further into a state of almost madness, I guess. Right, right, right. Yeah, I just, I'm reading a book. It's called The Thing by a guy named Dylan Trig.

I'm so glad you brought up the thing. Well, it does reference the movie the thing. It's about existential body horror, basically. And then, and the, and the, and the, and the, and the, and the, and the, and the, and th, th, the, the, the, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, tho, tho, tho, tho, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, the, thi, thooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, the, th, but it's about existential body horror, basically. And there's a quote in there about insomnia. And the last part of it is that, talking about how insomnia sort of has a personality onto itself that takes over your personality. There's another sort of you that comes in as the insomniaic. The last part of it is this impersonality absorbs my consciousness.

Consciousness is depersonalized. I don't stay awake. It stays awake. And when I read that, like after seeing the Baba Duke, it was just like, whoa, that's totally this movie. She became another. Yeah. So it takes that like sort of the possession of this movie that comes into her is almost from within her. Like she was possessed from her,, I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I, I, I, I, I, I, I I I I, I I I I I I I, I I, I I, I, I I, I I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I th, I th, I th, I th, I th, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't thi thi, I don't thi don't know thi don't know thi don't know, I don't know, I don't thi don't thi don't thi thi, I don't th comes into her is almost from within her. Like she was possessed from her within herself. It was really, it worked on a lot of levels. I thought it was a really smart, smart attack on this. Let me

ask you this because I think there are a lot of different, this movie ends pretty ambiguously I think. Okay, yeah. And it seems like there are a lot of the theories about what the Babaduke is and what what what what what what what what what the the the the th is, what the th is, what th is, what the the th is, what the th is, what th is, what th is, what th is, what the th is, what th is, what th is, what th is, th is, th is is is, thi is, thi is, thi is thi is is is is is thi is is is is is is is is is is is their is is is is is their is is is is, their is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is is the the the the the the the th is the the th is the the the th is th is the the th is the the th is th is the the the the the the thi is the the of theories about what the Babaduke is and what do you think? I thought it was the husband. I assumed the Baba Duke was the husband and there was that moment where she confronts it and it kind of, it's taken it back and then they kind of cut and then she has a relationship with it on some level. Yeah. And I just thought maybe this was, it was either the husband or, I mean I think on a greater level the Babaduke represented her dealing with her husband's death. And so she had found a way to nurture it and to keep it alive. to keep that sort of visceralness alive. Oh, that's not what I was thinking at all.

But be okay with it. So it didn't consume her anymore. But it was still there. She didn't lose that hurt. She didn't lose that pain. No. That's kind of what I got out of it. Oh, see, yeah. I thought that she, I thought that she, it was kind of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of, that that that that that she, that she, that that she, that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that. I that that that. I that that that that that that She. She. She. She. Do. She. She. She. Do. Do. Do. Do. Do, th. Do, th. Do, th. Do, th. Do, th. Do, th. Do, th. Do, th. Do, th. Do, th. Do, th. Right. I love that that throughout the entire film, like, I'm like, oh, this is just a movie about this woman losing her mind. And then she jumps on the door and holding herself in the air, kicking with both legs. And it's like, oh no, this physicality of it. Yeah, I think it's an interesting that you mentioned the exorcist, because I think if I had a tiny little bookshelf for DVDs and I was making like the familial horror DVD would be exorcist, Baba Duke Rosemary's baby. Yeah. It sandwiches perfectly between those two. I'm not a parent, but I think it's probably a like a terrible fear that you would like lose control of your child. You know, which is exactly what happens in the exorcist and in this and, you know, in Rosemary's baby, they tell her the baby's dead.

You know what I mean? And like, yeah, also it's Satan, so spoiler alert. But all of those movies, it's also the mother losing control of her. Yeah. Like this child, is going on consumes her and she has just focused on that and then that's helicopter parenting for you. Yeah but but but like helicopter and strafing at the same time like it's so destructive and just oh man well there's a dog murder in this how did you feel about that? I was super stoked on it. I love dog murder. I believe I just went, oh, oh, and there was a dog murder? And there was a, uh, a the, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a the, a, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a the, a their, a their, a the the the their, a their, a their, a their, a their, a their, a the the the the the their, a their, a their, a their, a their, a their, a their, a their, a their, a their, a their, a their, a their, a their, a their, a th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. tole. te. te. tole. to. te. tole, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th super stoked on it. I love that dog murder. I believe I just went,

ah, and there was a gentleman sitting next to me in the movie theater which just went, come on. Yeah, as soon as I saw that dog, I was like, oh, it's going to die. It's so cute. I would name that dog Grover Cleveland. Blonde. He was so cute. Our only non-sequential president, don't you get that from that dog? Our only president to serve non-consecutive terms. You can get that from that dog?

Stop it! There was no way I saw that coming. So, yeah, the killing of Grover Cleveland, like, in a, they didn't show it. Like you see his little legs go, per-pip-bid-bid-bip. And the stuffed animal got tossed to the floor. I mean, the reason stitches got my iris because they beat the death of a cat on screen and they were counting off its lives they were killing. Oh yeah that's true. So I was just like man come

on it's just a little cat. It's a baby kitty. But the and then this was an excellent use of a dog murder because it totally heightened everything. That's a phrase you don't get to say that often excellent use of a dog murder. It heightened it. It heightened it for the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. It was. It was. It was. It's. It was. It was. It was. It was. It was. It was. It was. It was. It was. It was. It was. It was. It was. It was. It was. It was. I. It was. I. It was. It was. I. I. I. I. And the book the Baba Duke the one of the hallucinations I guess she had while looking at it was that she would kill the dog then kill the kid then kill herself and so it was kind of like oh the step one here we go. Right right. Yeah poor. I was also watching this and thinking about how this movie fits into Australian horror cinema. Okay I have no touch. Do you tell me about Australia? So well there's a documentary that was on Netflix. I'm not sure if it still is called Not Quite Hollywood. Okay, which is about Australian exploitation cinema and covers a lot of horror. And it's really well, it's really fascinating. And after watching that, I was just like, well now I must just go nuts and watch all the Australian horror I can get. And like according to their I think, I th, I th, I their, I their, I their, I their, I their, I their, I their, I their, I their, I their, I their, I their, I their, th, th, their, their, their, th. It's thi their, was th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's their, was their, was their, was their, was their, was their, was th. Was, was th. Was, was th. Was, was th. Was, was th. Was, was th. But like, anything, any names, any recognizable names that I would not have known were Australian?

Wolf Creek? Nah, this is a backpack brand. It was a rip off Jan sport. Got any names. Wolf Creek is probably the most recent, really popular, well-known of that, Australian stuff. There's a movie from the 70s called Patrick, which was like, it's really a carry-type movie with like a guy who had psychic powers and use them for ill gains. It's really good, and I think Goblin does the soundtrack for it. There's a movie called Road Games that's... Road games. It's sort of like Dool, the Stephen Spielberg TV movie, but...

No, nope, nope. Okay. Uh, based on Richard Matheson's story. Road games is, I think, it's either Stacey's Key to Power's Booth, but I get those two confused. And Jamie Lee Curtis growing, going across the Outback. Oh, wow.
