Werewolf Ambulance: A Horror Movie Comedy Podcast - Episode 129- The Fog (1980)

Episode Date: April 10, 2017

In this week's episode, we dip back into the John Carpenter well with his 1980 film "The Fog." Special topics for your consideration include: our future careers as copyright-free jazz radio hosts, the... questionable allure of Tom Atkins: why do movies seem to think that young women are gaga for him?, the predictive powers of one Jamie Lee Curtis, long shots of nothing, leaving your child with a sea captain for safekeeping, and whether or not a film can be a slow burn if it never actually catches fire. Have you seen "The Fog"? Did you like it? Let us know your thoughts at facebook.com/werewolfambulance, on Twitter @werebulance or on Instagram @werewolfambulance. Starting point is 00:00:00 Thanks the M-T's for tunne to another episode of the Weirwolf Amulance. I'm your tune in to another episode of the Weirwolf Amulance. I'm your co-host, Alan, and I'm joined with my go-host Katie. Hey Katie. Hey Alan. What's going up? I don't have a radio voice. KAB. Good thing everyone's listening to KAB in this movie.
Starting point is 00:00:36 Everyone likes listening to Free of Copyright Jazz Music from the 20s. The official free of copyright jazz of the 20s station of Antonio Bay. Down here in Antonio Bay? Is this movie in Antonio Bay? I wasn't sure. I'm sorry. Here we go. Crank it up. It's also a double elimination movie. Hey, this is Wherewell Ambulance. I'm Alan. I'm Katie.
Starting point is 00:01:09 And we are here to talk about the John Carpenter Classic, the Fog. Do you ever say, um, when describing a John Carpenter movie? Do you ever say it without the word classic? Sure. I don't think you do? Vampires? I haven't understood. It's terrible. But you would you say, I feel like you would like you would like you would say, I feel like you would say, I you would say, I you say, I feel like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like to say, I to say, I to say, I to say, I feel like to say, I feel like to say, I feel like to say, I feel like to say, I feel like to say, I to say, to say, to say, to say to say to say to say to say to say to say to say to say to say, to say, to say to say, to say to say to say, to say to say to say to say to say to say to say to say to say to say to say to say to say to say to say to say to say to say, to say, to say, to say, to say, to say, to say, to say, to say, to to to to the the the the the the the the the to the the to to to to to to to to But you would you say, I feel like you would to say the John Carpenter classic vampires. Ghost of Mars, starring Ice Cube. Yeah, not good. But this is in the classic era of John Carpenter. It's true that this are when he made the good movies. Yeah, Halloween is Salt and Precinct 13, the Thing. BTILC? A little bit after this, yeah, yeah, yeah. When was that?
Starting point is 00:01:50 What year was that? 86? OK, I still would call that a good era. Yeah, they live was an 87. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Cran.. Ah, classic John Carbenter. What year was that?
Starting point is 00:02:07 That would be around the same time as they live, like 86-87. Garbage. This fucking movie though, like, all right. So this is a movie about some pissed off lepers that come back for their gold. Sure they do. That Mark Twain's grandfather stole. Sure he did. And Tom Atkins goes to the bone zone with Jamie Lee Curtis.
Starting point is 00:02:31 Sure he does. And Adrian Marble is your single mother radio. I was watching this movie, I was like, Stevie. It's probably super fun to have a radio show. And then I was like, wait. But she's the only one who works at this radio station located in a lighthouse that she owns. That is approximately 6,000 steps from her car. Why?
Starting point is 00:02:57 I don't know, but her fit bits must be so stoked. She's getting all those steps in. This movie opens on a Poe quote, which I feel like is a bad scene. Why? I don't know. I just feel like it's a bad way to start like, this is a scary movie, get a scary quote. You know?
Starting point is 00:03:12 You don't want to quote a thing that's better than your movie. Exactly. But also just to be like, just so you know, this this this this this this horror. We're doing a horror. But then it's got John Houseman explaining to little kids on a beach about a ghost story. Who is leaving their children with this grizzled old sea captain, I guess is my question. His name is Mr. Macken. It's midnight too. And there's like there's a bunch of six-year-olds on the Simpsons, you know? He's so great. Where are their parents? I guess at the radio station. Just that one, kids' parents.
Starting point is 00:03:50 She's the parents of all the kids in town. Yeah. It's a weird life she has. This movie also has so many stalwarts of John Carpenter movies. Like the guy who plays Dan O'Bannon. Is Charles Cifers, the guy who's the guy who's the guy who's the guy who's the guy who's the guy who's the guy who's the guy who's the guy who's the guy who's the guy who's the guy's the guy's the guy's the guy's the the the the the the the the the the's the's the the the the the the the thease thease thease thease thease thiaease the radio is the radio is the radio is the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the- the- the-s the-s the-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s.ea-s.ea-s.ea-s. thea-s. thea. ththe guy who plays Dan O'Bannon. Is Charles Cifers, the guy who's the meteorologist. Oh, okay, okay. I love that he's named Dan O'Bannon because Dan O'Bannon and John Carbiner wrote Darkstar together.
Starting point is 00:04:15 Yeah, yeah. Yeah. And he's also, Dan O'Bannon is the director of one of your favorite films, return of the living tid. Look, we've gone over and over this. We all make mistakes. Sure. It's just, it's really boring. It's a slow burn. It's not a slow burn because it never explodes.
Starting point is 00:04:41 What? I would say, in my opinion. It's just really dull. It's like he was like, okay, I got Halloween. It's really cool. There's a scary guy and he doesn't say anything and you don't know why he's doing any of this. And it's very, I don't know, like, let me just do it again. But with fog and explaining everything, and nobody you care about, you know? You don't care about Stevie and her child? Not so much. What about Tom Atkins and Jamie Lee Curtis? Pittsburgh Zone.
Starting point is 00:05:12 Yeah. It's also interesting that everyone in this movie is a more than competent actor. Oh yeah, yeah. And you know, Janet Lee, Jimmy Lee Curtis's mother. First movie they ever did together. It's adorable. Did they do others? H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H. H. H. H. H. H. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. the. the. to the. to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to thea. thea. thea. the did together. It's adorable. But did they do others? H-2O, the Halloween movie.
Starting point is 00:05:27 Oh shit, yeah, you're right with Josh Hartnett. And is an L.O.Coolchay in that? Or is that the one with Buster Rimes? What? I don't know? That's a good question. I don't remember. . movies and I can't remember which one's which. It doesn't matter. Okay. Regardless. Fine actor. Annie from Halloween is in this also. Oh yeah, Nancy Lumis. They're all fine.
Starting point is 00:05:48 Not a goddamn one of them looks like they want to be there. Don't forget about Hal Holbrook. Hour Mark Twain. Oh boy. But a competent actor. Sure, I guess. And we've got that on screen appearance from John Carpenter in this. Where is he? He's Bennett. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. the th. th. th. the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh, th. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh.........................................................................................................................screen appearance from John Carpenter in this. Where is he? And he's Bennett the Handyman. Ben at the the Handy Man. At the church when he's like, Father can you get paid? And the father's like, well, why don't you come back at, I don't know, six? Yeah. He's like, all right. So it's looking like a hippie-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-s. to-s. to-s. to-s. to-s. to-s. to-s. to-s. to-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-n. to-s. to-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. to-s. th. to-s. to-s. to-s. to-s. to-s. ta-s. toda-s. toda-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-s. to- a good vibe. Okay, so this movie presupposes that a hundred years ago.
Starting point is 00:06:28 What my movie presupposes is that 100 years ago, a priest and some of his pals like murdered a bunch of lepers by getting them to drive their boat into the rocks? This is the best way to describe that. I mean, am I wrong? No. Okay. And then like 100 years to the day later, the priest's grandson, I guess,
Starting point is 00:06:54 finds the diary of the priest in a wall, in the church. The wall breaks and there's a box there. Why does it break? Because... Magic? Yeah, ghost. Soup snatch. And then he reads part of it. He's like, I couldn't read anymore so I don't know what's going to happen.
Starting point is 00:07:10 Oh, okay, Guy. Doesn't want to get to the end too soon. He's still got that bottle of Jameston to get through. Yeah, it's true. He's got priorities. happening on 420. Boy, do I miss me. No medicine. No medicine. Oh God, watching these movies sober, some of them has been a trial. Especially this movie is just like a town that keeps getting covered in weed smoke. Yeah, it's true.
Starting point is 00:07:38 The name of the ship is the Elizabeth Dane that gets it and that comes up later. Does it? Yes, because Stevie's Adrian Barboe, who people might know from Swamp Thing and from tons of us. She's in the creep show episode also with Hal Holbrook. They're married in that. Oh yeah. Her son finds a piece of driftwood on the beach that is first a gold coin and then a piece of driftwood. Oh right. And he brings it back to the house and she takes it to the radio station for some reason. That's you would want to carry that to the little house. It doesn't love driftwood. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:12 And then it starts leaking and lights a tape recorder on fire. Yeah it's a good moving. It's a good moving. And Jamie. It's. into Tom Atkins. Immediately. Like, immediately. She's like 21 years old and so fresh-faced. Yeah. And so cute. And he is busted. He is. He is.
Starting point is 00:08:36 He's busted. Is it because he doesn't have his mustache? I think so. Did you find him more attractive in Halloween 3? OK. Did you find him more attractive in Halloween 3? Okay. Yes. Why is he always playing a sex symbol? Like, who is he falling? He's the every man. That's not the same thing.
Starting point is 00:08:55 He's the gross everyman that every man wants to be. So every man just wants to be skis-o. In 1980, phone show. You're absolutely right. It was a different time. He picks her up hitchhiking. And she's like, you're not a weirdo, are you? And there's the great thing where he goes, yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Yes, I am. To be fair, he's very funny. He's very charming. Yeah. But totally busted. in is where he like makes some sexual innuendo and she goes, well maybe. Yeah. She's just like fucking game right out of the game. And then the next scene they're like totally naked in his bed.
Starting point is 00:09:30 Well after the windows blow out in the pick him up. Oh right, right, right. Like, that's important in this conversation that we're having. And then she just follows him around for the rest of me. I gotta sort this out, I gotta go see about this boat, I gotta figure out what happened to my friends. She's like, I'm coming with you, why? Keep moving. She's like, there's better middle-aged men out there, JLC. Like a duck that was, like a baby duck that was following a duck and then another duck
Starting point is 00:09:54 walk behind you just to go off in that direction. It's very, it's as mind boggling, it's like, it's as mind, it's as mind, it's as mind, it's as mind, it's as mind-boggling as the Halloween 3 love. Right, why are they always just like, God, young women want to fuck this guy? Because I don't think they would at that era. Maybe in 1980? I don't know. I mean, they're still handsome men.
Starting point is 00:10:16 I mean, I'm not trying to be shitty to Tom Ackens. Yeah, he's not a not handsome man, but he's not like who you think Jamie Lee Curtis is going after. Well, there's also the movie Road Games that's shot in Australia where like her and Powers Booth hookup and he's like, word! Why are they doing this to her? I don't know. So strange. Um, here's a Jamie Lee Curtis story that I like.
Starting point is 00:10:41 Yes. In 1982, she saw, this is Spinal Tap, and said to her, to Deborah Hill, who she saw the movie with, because they were pals, she said, I'm going to marry that guy, Rie, Christopher Guest. Oh wow. And six months later, they were married, they were married, and they've been married all this time. Isn't that adorable? Can you imagine just calling that? Can you imagine being like like thine being being being being being being being being like that thine thine thine thi thi thi thin thi thin thi thi thi thi thi thi, like thi, like thi, like thi, like thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I that thi, I thi, I that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I to thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I'm thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi to marry you. But they've been married for like, uh, however long ago, 1982 was until now. So I love that. That's pretty awesome. It's adorable. Yeah, we should mention that Deborah Hill also co-wrote this movie. God rest her soul. She does not get the love that she should because she co-wrote Halloween and this and escape from New York and like she was there for the hits. Yeah, and this is not the worst movie. th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, the worst, the worst, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, it's, it's, it's thi, thi, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's th, it's thi, it's thi, it's thi, it's thi, it's thi, thi, thi, thi, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, to that, it's adorable that, it's adorable thi. It's adorable thi. It's adorable this one. And that's what I said. Uh-huh. I just, okay, okay, okay, okay. This is not the worst maybe we've ever seen, but.
Starting point is 00:11:30 There's like an eight minute scene of Adrian Barbo walking to that lighthouse. Why? Why is there the whole scene of that though? The, that doesn't set up anything? You don't need to know it. Do you think John Carpenter, because they were dating at the time, Jess wanted to film Adrian Barba Walking? We need to know how to edit, you know what I mean? As artists, we all need to know how to edit ourselves. And you and I are artists,
Starting point is 00:11:53 and that's why we cut out all. I knew I knew that name, didn't not know why. He's got his fingers all over this movie. And the cuts seem very similar. There's a lot of like similar, like those nighttime shots of, what is it, Santa Clara or wherever the Silver Shamrock? And Antonio Bay, very similar. Silver Shamrock, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:24 Different move, a different dumb-dum moving. I like when, so we see a lot of these, like, these set up shots of the town quiet at night. And I love the stock boy that's like sweeping up in the like grocery store and then drinks a bunch of orange juice and just puts it back on the shell. I did like that. Yeah, I like that a lot. So at one, like at one point in the night in the night in the night in th in th in th in th in th in th in th in th in th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the th. th. th. the the th. the th. the the the the the the th. the the the the the the th. the the the th. the the the th. the the th. the the the the the th. the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. the. the. the. to. to. t. ty. ty. tom. ty. tome. tome. the. th. point in the night, all this weird shit happens to all these people. Yeah, near midnight. But like none of them can really talk about it, whereas nowadays we'd all just be like on the internet like, oh my good, just weird thing happened, am I today, you know what I mean? I do. It can't work in a nowadays time. No for sure. I mean, I there is there is there is there is there is th. It is they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they th. It can't. It can't. It can't work. It can't work. It can't work. It can't work. It can't work. It can't work. It can't work. It can't work. It can't th. It can't. It can't. It can't. It can't, it can't, it can't, it can't, it can't, it can't, it can't, it can't, it can't, it can't, it can't, it can't. It can't. It can't. It can't. It can't. It can't. It can't. It can't. It can't. It can't. It can't. It can't. It can't. It can't th. It can't th. It can't th. It can't th. It can't th. It can't th. It can't th. It can't th. It can't th. It can't th. It can't th. It can't th. No, for sure. I mean, where there is literally a section of this tiny-ass town
Starting point is 00:13:07 where there are four phone boots together. Yeah. That is something you do not see anymore. And it's just like the way all the, it's not very subtle with the lining up of the information here. Like, the time that everything falls apart is the same time that the conspirators met 100 years ago is the same time that the book was found. This all happens at the same time.
Starting point is 00:13:29 Come on. To me, this felt very much like a comic book. It felt like reading a horror, like ECC comic book that was written in the 50s or something like that. Just in what way? Well, in th th th th th th th th, in th, in th, in th, in th, in th, in the same th, in th, in th, in th, in th, in thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, the the the the the the the the the the the thi, the the thi, the thi, thi, thi, thi, thi.. thi. thi. thi. thooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom. thi, th not in the same way that creep show does of that like, you know, the huge suspension of disbelief. Like, there's gonna be a leper ghost that are going to show up in a fog and hook people in the neck. Yeah. And it- But sometimes they have sickles, which they have no cause to have. You know I love a farm tool, but they should not have a sickle. The hooks. The hooks are the hooks are the hooks are the hooks are tho. tho. the hooks are the hooks are the hooks are tho. they they are they they are they are they are they are the hooks are cool. they are cool. the hooks are cool. the hooks are cool. the hooks are cool. they the hooks are they the hooks are their the hooks are their h. their hoo. their hoo. their h. their h. their h. their h. their h. their h. their h. their h. their h. their h. their h. their h. their h. their h. their h. their h. their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their th. th. th. their hoo. th. their hoo. their hoo. their hoo. their huge. their hoo. their hoo. their hoo. their hoo. their h. Um, but I feel like they're, they had probably had a hook and they're like, well, Rick
Starting point is 00:14:07 over there needs to have a weapon too. Yeah, Rick's like, come on guys. I just read my note. She's DTF immediately. Immediately. But not even just like, I guess sometimes you just want to fuck somebody, right? But then she follows him around for days. She like moves in with him, they're like new boyfriend, girlfriend.
Starting point is 00:14:28 It's so weird. So it's not the heart song. She wants to do more than just make love to him. She wants to follow him around for days and days and stand around while he's at like, like, the hospital in the morgue and like go on this boat with dead people. It's just like, what are you doing, lady? I know you don't have anywhere else to be, but... That scene doesn't creep you out where they're sitting and talking on the boat and he like
Starting point is 00:14:53 smells the beer and it's filled with seawater and then all of a sudden a body falls behind her. That's definitely a be right behind me. Sure. It gives me the heaves and the jibs. That's definitely a heaum worthy offense. So they take that body to the morgue and then it tries to draw a butt on the ground, right? True the number three. Why? Because six people need to talk about the end when how silly that gets.
Starting point is 00:15:27 So do you want to mention that the, what would that guy be, the, he's not the mortician. He works at the more, the corner? Thank you. It's played by the same actor that is the lead badass and assaulting prec-13. And he's fucking great. I love that dude.
Starting point is 00:15:46 He didn't have a very long acting career. He eventually became a teamster. Oh. So you're still in the business, but not like he just didn't get cast and rolls. But he's great. I love him. Have you ever seen assault on precinct 13? I think so.
Starting point is 00:16:02 They're shutting down the police station in Los Angeles. And so there's like two cops on duty the last night that it's open. And you have seen it? I think I've seen this. Yeah, yeah. Not the remake? Oh, wait. With John Legazamo? No, no, John Legosamo of my knowledge. So a prison bus has to stop there because somebody's ill and then there's a bunch of gangbangers come and like destroy the shit up.
Starting point is 00:16:27 Yeah. It's really good. It's a really good siege film. Better than this I think. I would say it's better than this but. And BTILC is way better than this too. Well, come on. Greatest American film ever made. Wait, it's way better than Roadhouse. It is way better than Roadhouse doesn't know it's funny.
Starting point is 00:16:46 It's true. Oh, yes. Big trouble with Little China. I'm glad you said that I was trying to figure out if we'd actually said the tel. I know if I just kept saying BTILC over and over. You ready for the remake with the rock? I'm not going to pretend I'm not going to say to say to say to say to say to say to say to say, I'm going to to say, I'm going to to say, I'm to say, I'm to say, I'm to say, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm to say, I'm, I'm, I'm to to to to to the the the, to to to to to to told, to to to to to to to to to to to me, to me, to me, to th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. to, to, thi. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thr. thrown. thrown. thrown. try. try. try. try. try. try. to, try. to. try. try. try.'m not going to say it's ruining my childhood or whatever, but I'm just not going to see that. God, imagine if your childhood was that easily ruined. A lot of people behave it that way, Alan.
Starting point is 00:17:10 I know, it's very strange to me. You know, they did other Star Wars movies. I'm mad, my childhood ruined. What fragile childhood that you have? Honestly, it's probably already ruined by you. you in your fragility. I love when Stevie, Adrian Barbeau gets woken up by her son and he comes and goes, Mom, can I have a stomach powder and a coke? Is he 85 years old? How did I miss that?
Starting point is 00:17:37 I must have completely missed that. What is a stomach powder? Is it like a tumbs? I don't. I thought it was like Alka Seltzer. I just need extra fizzies or is he going going going going going going going going going going to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go to go. I to go. I to to to to to to to to to to to to to go. I to go. I to go. I to go. I to go. I to go. I to go. I thought it was like alka-selter. Starting point is 00:18:21 The Janet Lee and Nancy Lumus. Yeah, and then there's the priest, I guess, who like is in Act 1 and then just disappears for most of the rest of the movie. Which is fine because I don't need him, I don't feel. You mad at Hal Holbrook? I just don't think he's adding much to this movie. They need him to be in it to like... So you weren't creeped out by the ship getting enveloped in fog? Did that happen?
Starting point is 00:18:48 Yeah, when? With ship. There's the fishing ship that's out there. The seagrass? What is it? The seagrass? Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:57 They're all just the, there's the buck flowers is the one guy who's looking at the wind, the ship out there. Like he's just sort of confused by everything. Yeah. That was fine. Yeah. Yeah. I love it when Janet Lee goes to the church and Father Malone's just creeping in the shadow and like jumps out at her one point. Yeah, like that's what I'm saying. Every time he shows up you're like, what are you doing?
Starting point is 00:19:18 You're like not paying your employees and you're scaring old ladies, like, what are you doing? No idea. I don't know. And drinking and like refusing to read the rest of this diary that literally tells you how to like, how this is all gonna go down. I don't know. Oh, do we mention when they wrecked the ship, they stole all the, these lepers were very wealthy. Oh, yeah. Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, I I I I I I I I I I I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. the. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. t. to. te. te. te. te. the. te. te. too. I've seen this movie too. I remember seeing it and being like, boy, that was boring. And then when you suggest to me do it, I was like, I don't remember a fucking thing about it.
Starting point is 00:19:50 I was like, there's a radio station, I think. I did not remember the giant gold cross hidden in a wall? The fuck? The f- His grandfather priest felt so guilty about stealing the money that he just melted it down into a cross. And didn't use it. Didn't like feed the poor, build like housing for, that's affordable. Yeah. No, it melted into a cross and stuck it. It was stuck in a wall. It seems to be very heavy.
Starting point is 00:20:20 Mark Twain's having a hard time carrying that. Oh, boy. Oh boy. Are you okay? I think you just got stuck. Tom Ackins to the rescue. I love it. Tom Atkins to the rescue. I love Tom Atkins as my action hero.
Starting point is 00:20:44 He makes me feel like I can do it. Like I can get out there and take care of business. You're right that he's an every man. Also at some point this movie becomes the same plot as Garfield's Halloween adventure. Don't you've seen that? Do you tell? No. It's a Garfield Halloween special where Garfield and Odie go trick-or-treating and Garfield gets greedy because he wants all the candy, candy, candy, candy, candy. Garfield's dressed up like a pirate, right?
Starting point is 00:21:07 Yeah, and Odie's his first name. And they take a little boat to an island where they find this old man who had been the cabin boy for these ghost pirates who had buried their treaty. It's like, it's literally the same. And I realized that this was first, so I think Garfield ripped it off. Oh man. Which is disappointing. Because I go to Garfield for artistic integrity. I mean when he sits around the house. It's true. He sits around the house.
Starting point is 00:21:33 Garfield books were my favorite thing to buy at scholastic fairs in school. Carfield in the far side. The long, thin books, yeah. They were good. Wider than they are taller. Yeah, that's what I meant to say. Ah. That's my last note, literally for this movie, just says, isn't this the plot of Garfield's
Starting point is 00:21:54 Halloween adventure? And then I stopped. I think I just put my pen down and was like, no. all over the place. Do we mention we're going to spoil this? Who cares? At the 22 minute mark. When Tom Atkins picks up Jamie Lee Curtis and he just pulls the Budweiser out from between his legs and offers her a sip and she's like yeah I'm down. Let's do this. Starting point is 00:22:31 six must die up here. I do not remember that at all. And that's silly as hell. That's the only way we know that six people must die. That never happens again. I don't know. And it does not happen before. There's no cause for it. Why did they wait a hundred years? There's a lot of questions. Starting point is 00:23:51 great advances in medicine and we're like super healthy and we're like, well, gotta die. Put it in writing. Are you familiar with the death metal band Deaside? I of course I am not. They have a song from one of the early records where basically the lyrics the lyrics the lyrics the lyrics the lyrics the lyrics the lyrics the lyrics the lyrics are the lyrics are the death metal band Deaside? I of course I am not. They have a song from one of their early records where basically the lyrics are about how the singer does not, wants to kill himself when he gets to be 33 to be the anti-Jesus. Wait, why is it the anti-Jesus? Because Jesus died at 33, so he's like the super evil Satan. He burnt across into his forehead. He's the super, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, the, the, the, thi. thi. thi. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, the thi, the thi, the thi, basically, basically, the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, basically, basically, basically, basically, basically, basically, the the the the the the the the the the the the the the thi, basically, basically, basically, thi, thi, basically, thi, thi, thi, thi, is thi, is thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, the thi, thi, the the thi, basically, basically, basically a dumb-dum. But it was still funny that people were like, dog, come on, you said in this song. Yeah. I didn't. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I th. I tho. Starting point is 00:24:46 You know what I mean? I do. I'm 43 and I do it. You couldn't do it either, huh? No. No. No. I'm not ready.
Starting point is 00:25:00 Well, hopefully he'll never come to that. So the fog is like moving around, I guess. Glowing and moving and moving against the wind. Against the wind, which I guess is interesting if you're the meteorologist in this movie, which there is. That's right. He's also just trying to fuck Stevie real hard. Every day. And she's like, I'm going into work and being like, I'm gonna fuck her. Yeah. They never meet though. It's kind of like, their phone conversations are kind of like a pre-AOL instant messenger flirting. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:25:30 And I don't know how kids fart now, but. You've got creep. Yeah, basically. Do you recognize him as the sheriff from Halloween? I did not. Yeah, he's in Halloween. Oh, okay. Yeah. All right, good for him. I wonder what it was like being in a good movie. He's also an escape from New York and he's, yeah, he's on the time. I've only seen the bad one, escape from LA.
Starting point is 00:25:53 I got to see the good one, yeah. I love that was the seagrass gets taken over by the ghosts. I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I the ghost. The ghost. I the ghost. I like that you cataloged them, so we wouldn't lose any of them. And then there's one point where Stevie's talking about being an Antonio Bane, she goes, it sure beats Chicago. And I was like, does it? Does it? I mean, it's beautiful there. Yeah, it's got a lot of gold for it. Yeah. How do you think she ended up there a single mom owning a lighthouse and opening the only
Starting point is 00:26:28 radio station there is? Because it's the only radio station anybody gets. And then turning it into by the end of this movie like some sort of weird performance art where she's screaming for her child, whose babysit or Mrs. Cobrets is just being murdered by the lepers? Oh, Mrs. Cobrets. Mrs. Cobrets! She's just trying. She is trying. I'm not coming down on Cobras. Oh, what's her dove kids name?
Starting point is 00:26:55 Andy. Oh, it's Andy. Stevie Wayne. Why do the lepers come for, are they coming for anybody? I think so. I think they're trying to kill the entire town. But they only need six. Do they know they only need six? Is this the first six people on shore?
Starting point is 00:27:12 I mean, they've gotten more than six. No, I don't think so. They got the three Dan, the meteorologist. Oh yeah, yeah, that's five. And then the priest offers himself up as six. So they don't, they're like not even very efficient. Yeah. Why these people? Why the meteorologist? Hmm.
Starting point is 00:27:34 Because he was a dick to them when he opened the door. There's multiple scenes where the fog envelopes a house we're building and then they start pounding on the door and then there's multiple scenes where people open the door and there's nothing. Yeah, why? You know, they're coming for you. Did you think the lepers looked cool? Um, be honest? No. Me either. But I do think the fog looks cool. I'll take that. And I don't know how you could have made them look cool, because they needed like what they were going for. I don't think like, it is that very like comic booky, like stark black in the fog with red eyes. I don't think they needed the red eyes.
Starting point is 00:28:17 I think that made it very silly. I thought they look like a little weird robots. Not very much happens, but they managed to fill that time with lots of shots of people walking

And father Twain is like, you take me, I'm number six. And they're like, the movie.
Starting point is 00:30:16 I'm number six. And then they're like, yeah, yeah, sure, sure, sure, sure. And nobody else gets hurt or anything? No. That's it. That's the movie. Nancy Lumas gets her hair pulled for a while. But she's fine. She's, she's, um, she bounces back. She's very resilient.
Starting point is 00:30:32 Yeah. Her hair doesn't even look bad. Her hair is spectacular eating the scenery. Perl and a hair dryer? What do you need? That stuff to make that happen. You have to have some sleeping with the curlers then probably. Farah faucet like giant helmet of hair? Gorgeous. They're both bouncy though. They're not helmet-like. I just want to really express that, that they got those good bounces. Say something nice. Starting point is 00:31:10 I mean, there really is not much to say. You're going to have to help me out on this one. Yeah, I'm trying to think of, like, there isn't, I mean, full disclosure, the first time I saw this movie did not like it. Yeah, why would you ever see it again? Because it's a John Carpenter movie and I wanted to. I followed the John Carpenter Appreciation Society on Facebook and they posted a picture of them today. And let me see if I could find it and show it to you. I thought this was a joke that you were setting up with John Carpenter Appreciation Society but this is a real thing that you follow. I really did. What would the joke be?
Starting point is 00:31:48 Alan, I don't know. It's a blank phage. Also, while you're looking for that, I want to talk about how Adrian Barbo to escape the lepers climbs up onto this like teeny, tiny, tiny, super, uh, terrifying. Terrifying. In those heels. In those heels, roof of the lighthouse, like, way, way, way above the land. Just like, why would you ever do that, you dumbed. There, there wasn't any, it's not like there was an antenna up there. Nothing.
Starting point is 00:32:16 There was like no reason to have a ladder to get up there. She's just scrabbling and nothing. And nothing, whatever. I love that she's in the lighthouse, but there's no light in the lighthouse, but then there's a light in the lighthouse somewhere. Interesting. Because there's like a light that keeps going around, but she's in the light portion. Yeah. With like drapes hung up all around here.
Starting point is 00:32:34 Yeah. My new fashion goals, Boy, when is that from? The shooting of Big Trouble Little China. Yeah. Flannel shirt tucked into a pair of jeans with a suit jacket over top of it? Yeah, you've got some chucks. I topped chucks. Look that hair. It's not bad look. No, it's good look. Good look.
Starting point is 00:32:53 I didn't like this movie. the first that again. What? I think it's just that the creepy atmosphere that it has. I think it has good atmosphere. I think that just like that impending doom sort. I don't think that necessarily delivers on that atmosphere super well. But then like I find so much to love in the ridiculousness of this movie.
Starting point is 00:33:23 Like, why would a piece piece dpific dp thi piece piece piece piece piece piece piece piece piece piece piece that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that the the ridiculousness of this movie. Like why would a piece of driftwood catch on fire and say six bodies? It's just not, but it's not presented in such a way as to be ridiculous. Like, oh no, they're trying. They're trying. Yeah. And I feel like it's not even as over the top as Halloween three to like, which.
Starting point is 00:33:39 No one's still stone hedged inhenge in this movie. Right? Totally forgot about that. How do they get it on a plane? You didn't like it when the fog took out the phone lines? And then the power station? The fog goes into the like big turbine that's turning the power station? Dumb as hell. I'm sorry. Like, this is not the worst movie weturbine that's turning the power station. Dumb as hell. I'm sorry. Like, this is not the worst movie we've ever done,
Starting point is 00:34:08 but boy is it dull. It just is. And the thing that bothers me is that it's a great concept of like a hundred years ago, these guys, these like pitiful men were killed by like a priest and like town elders, and now they've come to se to se to se to to to to to to to to to to to to their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their, thoes, their the. I's thi. I's thi- thi. I's thi. I's thi. I's thi. I's thi. I's thi. I thi. I thi. I thi. I th. I th. I th. I th.. I th. I th. I their, their, their, their, their, th. I's, thi. I's, thi. I's thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom. th. th. th. th. thetown elders and now they've come to seek their revenge. I love it I'm in. Right, yeah yeah. Okay so they use fog to do it. Sure, Bain of the Sea. Sure, okay I'm still in but they're using it in like they're they're magical and sometimes they're ghosts but some but they kill with farm implements. Yep. I don't know. It just falls apart for me.
Starting point is 00:34:46 Sure. I mean, I think if Bush came to shove, had you asked me before I sat down and watched this this time, if I thought that they were lepers or pirates, I would definitely said pirates. So yeah, so yeah. So yeah, okay. Pirits are cooler anyways. Yeah, for sure, the lepers. Yeah. It's such a weird, like, just a weird choice.
Starting point is 00:35:06 It's a weird choice. I think having this happen in California makes it a really odd choice too, because it's just like, it's not where you think of like shipwrecks happening. And I know there were tons of them that happened. Yeah, but like, you know, it seems like more of an Carolina coast thing. Yeah. And I just find Tom Atkins so endearing in these things, like, because... Yeah, he is. It's such, like, is he so always shitty? Did you find him shitty in this?
Starting point is 00:35:34 He just knows everything? You're like, oh no, you wouldn't be out there for that long. You've got, damn it, you'd be in town. He's just like yelling at everybody. He's, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's just, he's just, he's, he's just, he's just, he's just, he's just, he's just, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he's, he's, he's, he's like, he's like, he's like, he's just, he's just, like, he's just, like, like, he's just, like, just, he's just, just, like, he's just, he's just, he's just, he's just, he's just, he's just, he's just, he's right, he's right. His right. And his inexplicable relationship with Jamie Lakers. Just they're like, okay, we've got Tom Atkins. We need a beautiful young Starlet that will want to be with him. Sure. Pile them up. And she likes working with John Carpenter, Deborah Hill.
Starting point is 00:35:56 Sure. Why to come back and do it again? Do you think she was like, oh, this one's. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. to. to to be. to be. to be. to be, to be, to be, to be, to be, to be. to be. to be to be to be to be to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. th. to. to. th. th. th. to. to. th. to. to. to. to. to. tom. tom. to. tom. to. to. to. to. to. know? She was just like, I'll be in trading places soon enough. That'll be fine. I'm going to marry Nigel Tufnel. I just don't know yet. God, who wouldn't? Who wouldn't? I that's adorable.
Starting point is 00:36:12 I love that story. Do you think she was bummed when she found out he was be Nigel Tufnal too, deep down. You don't think she's like, I said I was doing this thick. Do you think she makes him be Nigel Tufnel? He's like, Jamie, listen, we have to talk about and she's like, no, no. Nigel? Nigel? Nigel wouldn't do that. This one's called Lick My Love Pump. But if you keep folding the bread it breaks. Honestly there's never been another movie as good as Final Tap. No. No, it's perfect. It's literally a perfect
Starting point is 00:36:52 film. And if you watch the DVD on the extras, there's commentary from Harry Shear, Christopher Guest and Michael McKeon. Oh really? Reprising their roles as those three and just I think they must have just gotten drunk and recorded this but they're basically looking at watching it like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their roles as those three and just I think they must have just gotten drunk and recorded this but they're basically looking at watching it like it's a real documentary and talking about like where they are now and like what it was like behind the scenes and it's amazing it's like another movie of them being in character and I love it we'll have to do that just keep insisting everyone's day. Oh man oh man. All right Katie. I think it's time to pull the trick.
Starting point is 00:37:26 See now that I'm talking about a good movie, I'm all energized again. So Katie, do you want to the ratings game? This movie. This movie, I mean, it's not bad in the sense that a lot of movies we've seen are bad. It's not bad. It's not pay the ghost bad It's not a lot of movies bad. I don't I don't I don't it's not the happening It's not I know what you did last summer. Come on It's just a really dull. It's really dull. It's it takes a good idea and just kind of as like mus mushes it in a mortar and a pestle, you know what I mean? I do.
Starting point is 00:38:06 A four. Four. Four. You're not surprised. I'm not. I'm actually surprised I got a four. Yeah, I mean, it's not bad. It's not bad.
Starting point is 00:38:17 The acting is good. It's just like, why is this so slow for no reason? It's not like John Carpenter doesn't know how to make things happen or to have a slow burn where you're like tense the whole time. There's no tension in this movie. The stakes are nil. That's all. That's all. I do love.
Starting point is 00:38:35 I just thought about Tom Beckett's how he's driving with their hair flapping in the breeze, which is kind of cute, I guess. He's busy though, solving this crime. And making sweet, sweet love to Jamie Lank Curtis. Those are important things. I'm buying her art. Oh yeah. Her art. It was such a gross like, after they made love.
Starting point is 00:38:56 told me to say the other options. That's better. He's flipping, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, their, tho, tho, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th to say the other options for the, after they had sex. That's better. He's flipping to her, her sketchbook, and he gets to when he's like, I've got to have this one. How much? And she's like, no, it's on the house basically. But it's like him asking to buy it from her felt like, well, I need to give you some money for something, right? Oh, right, this movie, come on. You're stalling.
Starting point is 00:39:31 This movie is a seven. Really? Why? I don't know. Just because it's John Carpenter. If anybody else made this movie, you'd be like, sure. That is not fair. But it has that, like, it's a such a such a such a such a such a that, that, that, that, that, It has a John Carpenter thing and it goes,
Starting point is 00:39:46 Boop, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, to do the soundtrack, it's good. I know. It's got into the, it's got the Tom Atkins in it, it's got the Jamie Lee Curtis. It's got Market to the movie. It's nothing to prove to me. Everything I brought to you has been like the garbage and free
Starting point is 00:40:11 and I'd seen them all before I knew they were garbage. When I was like Rob do you want to watch the fog with me he's like is that on the radio station I was like yeah and he was like I guess. Yes, I mean I think the the Carbenter Factor is totally blinding me to this movie on a lot of levels. Honestly. But I do enjoy it and I watch it from time to time. I'm glad you have things you like. It's important to like things. I feel like I made some people mad this week. I feel like people probably like this movie. Yes, but you know I think a lot of people do the
Starting point is 00:40:55 same thing I do. It's John Carpenter's. I have a friend who is like he's still sticking with him and like he's made some bad movies. Yeah, it's, it's over for him. And she's, yeah, but I mean, What's the last movie he then made? It was called Ward something. It was like took place in a mental hospital. It did not look good. I did not watch it.
Starting point is 00:41:15 Okay. But like, it would be like if you were into a band and they put like like like 10 like 10 like 10 like 10 like 10 like 10 like 10 like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, the, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, the the the the, to... the the, to. the, the, the, to. the, the, the, to. the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the. records and then like in the next level there were some poops though and the next level down is still some jams yeah you know and then he kind of just turned it out but but still it's a good run that's fine I feel like I just all I want to do it during these talk art movies is just defend John Carpenter and I know I don't need to because I know you're a fan. Of the good ones. Of the good ones. Yeah, I was talking to a friend about this movie this week and he has pretty much the
Starting point is 00:41:51 same reaction to you or he's like, oh, but it was in the good era. This friend also told me that he didn't want to listen to the Bramstokkir episode because because because because because because because because because because because because because because because because because because because he to to the movie the movie heu-I hea hea hea he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he loves because because because because because because he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves he loves. that movie and if we if I didn't like it we weren't going to be friends anymore. Oh wow and I was Chris George and I was like to listen to it. I value your friendship. Can you imagine Bramstokers Dracula being the hill you'd kill friendships on like the thing that you just could not surmount. I have to believe you wouldn't. I have to believe you wouldn't. He would have no one to play the clown. That's the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the thoomfewf. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I have to believe. I have to believe. I one to play the clown in his Cathulu adventures. That's what I'm, that's my role. What are you playing a legit clown? No, just always the goofball.
Starting point is 00:42:29 Oh, did you? Everyone needs that. A clown that had gotten away from the circus. It was solving supernatural crimes. Not bad. I was a magician in the last one to me. Nice. What is your movie? No, I don't think so. We've all got different tastes. Oh. That's just better than other people. That's just how it is. Speaking of, speaking of my taste being excellent. Yes. Did you see the trailer for the new it movie? I did see the trailer for the new it. What do you think? It looks really silly, but I'm gonna go see. I thought it looked great. I thought it looked really good.
Starting point is 00:43:05 I'm really looking for it. Did you think I look? I saw all these people they're like, it's so creepy. It's so creepy and I was like, does it? I just think it looks exciting. Yeah, it looks fun. I'm feeling, I'm excited about it. Yeah, silly, people like the mom's hair and like, it's so creepy and I was like, word?
Starting point is 00:43:25 That's creepy. Maybe in the right set of it will be. But I was like, I will definitely, and like, I couldn't tell from the trailer, are there no adult characters? Are they just the kids? I don't know. I don be wrong. I was going to like split it in the two I think it might be wrong. I could be wrong. I can often know what I'm talking about so I could be wrong. But I thought it looks great and I'm looking
Starting point is 00:43:50 forward to it. Yeah. And then I was like can I take a baby to see it? Probably. If they sleep. Oh man I hope that's a mommy movie movie. Just like thirty. I th. I th. I th. I thought it was so it's not like a Dairy Queen grill and chill. I thought it was like a dairy queen grill and chill. Are there still dairy queens? Yeah, like an ice. Are you thia? thea.
