Paul Williams did all the music for this movie and you might know him from doing hits for the carpenters he wrote a song for David Bowie. And there's like, I mean, I don't want to jump too far ahead, but there's a scene where it's like, he's looking basically into a mirror being like, I'm someday not going to be this hot. And I was like, you're actually, I th. I th. I th. It's a horror, I would say horror comedy, rock, opera musical is probably the genre I fall under. I think this and Rocky Horror Picture Show are the only things that are in that genre. I'd be interested to see Rocky Horror Picture Show now, but I hated it when I was in high school.

Really? I thought everybody, that was a thing for you guys. For you guys, what the fuck does that mean? You know? Peep balls? What? Pee-palls and pat-faps? Pee-pahs and pat-paps? Meem? Meene. This to do a brief, which is awesome. That was awesome. I really liked that. The gist of this movie is that this guy, Swan, is trying to open up the perfect rock club. And he's looking for the perfect song to open up his club with. And he has this group that's his,

his group that he's put together called Juicy Fruit. I'm so jealous. there's a band with that name and it's not my band. Or the Juicy Fruits? It's the Juicy Fruits, which I really love. And they're doing like a shanana throwback 50s sort of thing at the beginning and it's, I think, I thought it was fucking hilarious. Yeah, they were great. Totally into it. I, them. Yeah they were all really funny yeah what they were doing so he's looking for the perfect rock song this guy Winslow plays him some like shitty Billy Joel

Yeah, why they had a record press, I don't know, they just did. They did everything in-house. It's a DIY operation. Swan doesn't trust anyone but himself. So, burns his face off, got this metal teeth, turns into the Phantom of the Paradise, the titular character of the movie, and Haunt Swan's Club. Not really, because Swan immediately puts him on the payroll to write music. Yeah, I did not expect him to become a W-2 employee as quickly as you do. But he does. Go on, I'm sorry. No, no, it's good. That gets you to where you need to be, I think, in the movie. Oh, man. Yeah. Yeah. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, just to jump right in. I really had a lot of whimsy. I don't know why. super well executed. Yeah, it seems a little whimsical for your taste. Yeah, yeah, there's a lot of whimsy. I watched about the first 15 minutes and then I was like, why am I watching this sober? And then I was sober. And then I was like, thin.

And then I thought the music was awesome? And then I had some of the music was awesome. the whole. Yeah, I had to be a lot of sense. I thrown. they. th. th. th. th. th. th. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. th. It seemed like they were going forto sell millions. Yeah, yeah. I bet it didn't. It didn't. This movie was a theatrical flop. There's so much to this movie, but like not a lot to this movie. Yeah, I feel like I don't remember any of it. Maybe your medicine was

too strong. No. So it's based on the original Phantom of the Opera. Yes. With a heavy dose of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, a heavy dose of Faust, and a little bit of picture of Dorgan. Yeah. So it's got, you know, it's got all that stuff going on. It's very too tunic. But laid over this absurd rock opera. It is a year before Rocky Hard Picture Show.

Because he did carry right after this, which I would not believe. He went from this to carry. Yeah, this predates Rocky Harr, which everyone sort of thinks of as the big rock opera the 70s, like the big horror rock opera, I should say. And this is arguably more horrific, like the horror elements, one of them are pretty good. His makeup job looks nice when he gets his helmet ripped off and stuff? No? I took a little issue with that because you never really see it. He just like swings his head wildly back and forth and you never really get like a good close-up of his like mangled face which I could have done with. You kind of do when he's crawling on on the floor at the end of it? I wish I would have just gotten like a good, I th th th th th th th th th th th to just w w wish I w wish I w wish I wish I wish I wish I wish I wish I wish I wish I wish I would th th th th th th th to to to to to to th to to to to to th th to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to th. or he I think he gets his sleeve caught in the record press or something a part of his clothing and then it closes on his face. And then he runs outside and dives into the water that was like the body of water that was outside. I just have written here you're going to get an infection in that water with an open wound. So I was concerned for a moment. Oh, maybe I fell asleep. Maybe. I don't remember that part. There's a lot of things I bet we don't. Yeah,'s just sort of it's it's got a really nice dream like quality to it, which the female lead in this movie, Jessica Harper, she's also in Suspheria. So she's... Oh, that's where I recognize her from.

Yeah. She's killing it on the nightmare-themed films of the, yeah. She also dances like a drunk Stevie mix. It was ridiculous. The one part where she dances herself off stage, riding a pony, it was amaze balls. I was like, no one taught her, no one helped her practice this. She just went for it. She just did it. It explains what you never actually see her dance the ballet in Cypuria.

Ah, not so coordinated this one. Was that really her singing, do you know? I don't know. It's beautiful. Swan runs this record label Empire called Death Records. Yeah. Which has an amazing logo of a dead bird, like totally like. Feet in the air. Yeah, it's really beautiful.

It turns out that he's made a contract with the devil. This is where I started to get a little bit lost. There were lots of contracts involved. I mean, throughout the entire film, he has no, seemingly no moral center. Yeah. And he just keeps doing cruel and unusual things to people. Yeah, for no reason. It just, I don't, it didn't seem to advance his business model, which it seemed like he was trying to make money, and it didn't seem like he was doing things that would really, I mean, he could have done it. It seemed like the whole movie was a really damning indictment of the music industry. Oh, totally, yeah. Money grubbing, jaguess.

Soulless, yeah. Soulless, yeah, literally, soulless. I can only assume that Brian DePahama saw Shannah was curious and wrote it. So Swan is trying to put on, I think, a rock opera of his own in this theater. Like that's how he's going to open it. Right. Open a day, right? Yeah. And it is going to be Winslow's Faust. Right. Because he has written a rock opera about Faust. Yes. Inexplicably. Just rolls in with it. Okay. So, you'll just suspend your disbelief on that one. He steals it from Winslow, and then Winslow goes to jail, teeth get replaced by metal teeth. Oh, why does he go to jail?

Because they frame him for telling drugs? Yeah, they put heroin on him. Yeah. They actually have the cops drop their when he into his bag. Yeah. anything. All right, so he gets out of prison and breaks into the death records building. And I want to just say that the receptionist for the death records, yeah. Offices, I loved her style. Yeah, she was the coolest lady ever. I was watching that like, the reception. The reception. The reception. The reception. It was just like she was the baddest. The baddest. But she of course gets a guard,

to stop Winslow. Right. So then he sneaks into the Paradise, which is the Rock Club, and gets like a costume, sort of a phantom of the opera-like costume, it's sort of like weird bird-like mask. Really beautiful. Yeah, and a cape and some spandex. He's very gangly. It's very silly. That's when he is, you know, the phantom of the paradise.

Right. Okay. So then he gets into a confrontation with Swan. Right. Who... Being very business-sevy. Yeah. that immediately takes him on board to finish his rock opera. Right. To rewrite it for Phoenix.

And to do this like you do with any job, you fill out your I-9, you fill out your W-4, and then you sign a contract in blood. A seven, eight-hundred-page contract. Yes. So he does that and he is now signed on to rewrite the Faust opera for Phoenix as the main main singer. But Swan's got other ideas because he has his new after... Because Winslowsl the the the the the the the the the the to to to to to to to finish to finish to finish to finish to finish to finish to finish to finish to finish to finish to finish to finish to finish to finish to finish to finish to finish to finish to finish swans got other ideas because he had this new after Because Winslow has blown up with a hilarious Cartoon bomb that has an alarm clock strapped to dynamite. He's blown up the juicy fruits. I don't remember that at all. Yeah, he blew up the juicy fruits when they were singing The Beach Boy song. Oh, and they were the beach bones, but I still don't remember that at all. Oh, yeah, yes, yes, yes, yes, th. No, th. Oh yeah, yes, yes, yes, now I do. It was it was a car bomb? Yeah, okay good, just checking. He put it, he put the bomb in a car and then they all climbed on

the car and car exploded. Yeah, don't worry they're unh I love beef. Yeah, he's amazing. See, I think you like this movie better than you think you do. I love elements of this movie. So beef is this huge, muscular like proto-heavy metal dude. Sort of glam, rock, like a really weird David Bowie, but he's also like kind of a diva. He's like, I guess David Bowie's probably Diva. Well, yeah, when he's not on stage, he's all lispy and very fem. Yeah. And then when he's on stage, he's all, he's all testosterone. So to hide the fact that Swan has replaced Phoenix with beef, which is just words that I don't really get to say that often. He like builds a wall in the paradise to hide, to like trap the thing. It gets past to a Montiago-ish when he hides. Well, after the phantom completes the opera, that's when he walls him in.

Which is a very dumb thing to do because I assume that Swan owns this building. Yeah, but he doesn't need him anymore. Yeah, but what is a very devilish thing to do? I'm just saying he's not a good business man. That's all I'm saying. He built an empire. You saw how lavish his home was? That's true. So the Phantom escapes. I don't recall how. I think he just run through the brick wall? He explodes out of the wall. Kill kills the two awesome uh, all the bikers in this movie are bikers but then they have like football player makeup and make their eyes. They were just guarding everything and they wore death row, not death row records.

That's a different, that's a different thing. Oh my god, can we redo this with Shugnitis swam? Yeah, I like that. What? So while he's, is it when he escapes, the beef is performing? Yes. And that's when he blow the beefeufe beef beef beef beef beef beef beef beef beef beef beef beef beef beef beef beef beef beef beef beef beef beef beef beef the beef the beef the beef the beef the the the the the this performance I really want to spend some time on. Okay. So it's still the juicy fruit slash the beach bums, but now they are the undeads. And they have like this crazy face paint on.

And the fork, a kiss was in 73, and this came out in 74. He's like, just like that. Yeah. Because he's the devil, we think. At that point, I guess. Because he shows up and he's like, uh-uh, you can't die until I do. So don't try to kill yourself. Or don't try to kill me because you'll die too. Right. As soon as I died, that wounded your chest will open up in your body.

And the fandom was like, mm-hmm. Pretty bummed. Yeah, pretty bummed. Like if somebody died you just like totally total jubilation. Well I think that's when I mean we're coming out of Vietnam. There's already there's a ton of death on television all the time.

And it's being turned into entertainment on some level. So I think there was a lot of, a lot of that in the zeitgeist. Okay. Plus, there was just more news that was covering that sort of stuff. So it was just, they went on more. You were seeing death on TV a lot more than you did in earlier decades. Okay, I'll accept that. Thank you. Sure.

How does, I forget how they're- So the Phantom swings down and he grabs Swan's mask as he's coming by and then you see that Swan is a bloody mess in the face. Why was he not just old? Why was he bloody? He looked like a burn victim. That's not what old people look like Brian DePalma. I don't know if you've seen an elderly person but they generally look like us but wrinkled. He looked like Freddy's little kid who was awesome. Very strange. Very strange. And then just as soon as that happens just chaos ensues and Swann tries ripping out the vocal cords of

Phoenix because he said I want your voice you give me your voice. Oh yes she also signed a contract in blood which is really not relevant to anything. No it doesn't. What was he going to do their vocal cords anyway? Sing I don't know. Because he could clearly he, the phantom I guess lost his voice in the accident with a record for us. Right. And then Swan basically like auto tunes him back into life. Yeah I mean he doesn't even need her vocal words. Yeah, I don't know. Did anything, any of the words that just came out of my mouth make sense? Yeah, they were beautiful. Great. It was poetry. Great. Paiwtree. Yeah, he tries to kill her. Swan comes up and stabs. No, Phoenix stab swan. No, the phantom stabbed swan. There you go. The phantom stab swamthe wound in the fans chest, and then he dies with a dude inexplicably dancing around him the entire thing he's telling?

It was so weird. It was so weird. And like, people I guess just rush the stage. I mean, like, this is, people are being brutally attacked and murdered. And the crowd just like gets on stage. It's all part of the show, man. I don't understand that. Why is no one calling it off very much? People are going to die. Because it's all part of the show, man. I think.

But if it's all part of the show, you should sit back there and watch it, doosh bag. No way, you're part of the show now. They are the, like, the one guy was taking the bloodthey grabbed the bird masks and were stabbing swan with them. And so that guy, yeah. Wow, I don't remember that either. Yeah, so that guy got covered in blood and was like wiping in on people's faces and stuff. It was real weird at the end of that movie. Well, that's the 70s.

In a nutshell. Yeah. that's pretty much the gist of the movie. So yeah, both the Phantom dies taking out Swan, which is his ultimate, I guess. Right, yeah. He gets his own death and gets to kill his nemesis at the same time. Yeah, so that's a lot. You got, you guys got that, right? You guys ready for the test?

Yeah, the movie is crazy Go Duts. You know, this movie has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Wow. And, you know, there's, it is nothing if not enjoyable. Yeah. It is, it's nuts. It's really fun, but... Way more fun than I thought it was going to be. I just...

To love him. It's really funny. But I mean, Brian DePalmas, the rest of his career has been like, you know, scarface and... Carrie. Yeah, I mean, Carrie for sure, but a lot of it, like the Untouchables, very different tonally than this movie. Well, this movie was a huge flop. Yeah. So I'm assuming he probably didn't want to go back to this well.

Yeah, I mean, Rocky Horror did and obviously has a huge fan base and people love that movie, people still perform it at colleges and stuff. Yeah, college kids. It's what they're doing. And I think that movie's maybe more popular because it's more politically subversive than this film is. This is sort of like a just attack on the music industry where that was like an attack on heterosocity and stuff.
