Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello, welcome to another episode of WhereWaf Ambulance. I'm Alan, and I'm here with my co-host Katie. Hi Alan. Hi, Katie. How are you? I'm doing all right. Good. This week we're going to talk about one of my favorite movies from the 1980s. Oh boy. Return of the Living Dead. Bum-ba-ba. this movie, my favorite movies from the 1980s. Oh boy. Return of the Living Dead. Bump-pa. This movie, all right, we can get into it.
Starting point is 00:00:31 I have a lot of thoughts on this film. I see that you are, I see that you're chomping at the bit here. Wait, can I just say one thing before you start? I started laughing at the very opening of this movie and left for like five straight minutes. It opens on like a black screen with white lettering that says something about how these are real names of real people in real organizations and I the way who is phrased I just started laughing and then right at the end of the text screen that says real organizations it cuts to a medical supply company called You need a what? No! Well this is a horror comedy movie. I get that. And it's, so this
Starting point is 00:01:10 movie was written by Dan O'Bannon, who is the guy who wrote the original draft of Alien. And he worked with John Carpenter on the movie Darkstar, which is John Carpenter's first movie. They made it when they were in college. He's worked on a few other films as well, dead and buried, life force, but for me return in the living dead is like the quintessential Dan O'Bannon horror movie. Like it captures his, I think his sense of humor and just the his ridiculous take on horror. It is very silly. So I guess we should start with a little bit of a recap. If this is your first time listening we we do spoilers. If you want to watch the movie before you finish this episode, I highly recommend it. So this is a, uh, fuck, this movie has everything, man. Oh, it has a lot of things. I will agree with you on that point.
Starting point is 00:01:55 It's got jokes. It's got good special effects. Yeah It's got a... So far you're not wrong. Yeah. It's got a ridiculous portrayal of the military? Oh boy. Do you want to try to start us off on a plot summary on this? Sure. You've already mentioned that we start off the Unita medical supply? Yes. So it cuts to inside this warehouse full of medical supplies, all of which are clearly you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you th th th th you th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th thi thi thi thi thi that thi. So thi thi. So thi. So thi. So thi. So thi. So far thi. So far thi. So far thi. So far th. So far th. So far th. So far th. So th. So th. So th. So th so th so th. So th. So th so th. So th. So th. So th. So th. So th. So th. So th. So th. So thi. So thi. So thi. So, so thi. So, so thi. So, so thi. So, so thi. So, so thi. So, so thi. So, so thi. So, so thi. So, so thi. So, Unita medical supply. Yes, so it cuts to inside this warehouse full of medical supplies, all of which are clearly made of plastic. And we meet Freddy, who is a, I have him described in my notes as idiot handsome, which I later, I can see that I later amended to, oh wait, he has a rat tail, forget it. He is new to this job. He's working with a guy named Frank. Frank. And they're th are are are are are are clearly are clearly are clearly are clearly are clearly are clearly are clearly th th th are clearly th th are clearly th are clearly th are clearly th are clearly th are clearly clearly th are clearly clearly th are clearly th are clearly clearly th are clearly clearly clearly th are clearly clearly th are clearly th are clearly th are clearly th are clearly th are clearly clearly thr- thr- thr- thr-c clearly clearly clearly clearly clearly clearly clearly clearly clearly clearly th are clearly th are clearly th are clearly thr-c clearly thr-c clearly th. th. th. th. th. th. th th th th. th th th. th th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. Clearly, clearly clearly clearly th. Clearly, clearly th. Clearly, thi clearly thi thrcruly that-cruly that-c. Clearly, clearly that-cruly that-c. Clearly, clearly that-c. Clearly, clearly that-c. Clearly is new to this job. He's working with a guy named Frank. And they're Crackin' Wise.
Starting point is 00:02:48 And then we briefly meet the boss, Bert, who is leaving as the scene begins. Played by Clue Gouldiger. Stallword of 70s television shows. What was he in? Just everything in the 70s. He looked very familiar to me, but I didn't like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, the 70s. He looked very familiar to me, but I didn't bother to look at him. Kojak and just crazy shit. So Frank is showing Freddie the ropes of what's in this medical supply warehouse. They are basically like shipping out to medical schools and things like that.
Starting point is 00:03:16 And in it we see split dogs, which are dogs split vertically down the middle. So you can see what's going on on the inside. You're split dogs. Which I don't think you could just cut them right down. Is that a real thing? I don't think you can just cut a dog down the middle? Definitely, it's in this movie. It's got to be true. Yeah. This movie is based on tr that. So they're looking around this warehouse, there's some skeletons, there's like a real life dead, good to have her, hanging in like a fridge wrapped in plastic. And then Frank
Starting point is 00:03:52 starts to brag to Freddie about how the army once shipped them. Well, he asked him if he's ever seen that movie, Night of the Living Dead. Oh, right. I did like that. And hes about how this happened in the Pittsburgh VA Hospital. I do like the homage to, I like the fact that this movie takes place in a world where the Night of the Living Dead exists. Isn't that refreshing? Because so often in a movie, because so often in a movie, like, because so often inthe movie, you have to get him in the brain, which I really like, I really appreciate that. That sort of... John Russo, one of the writers of this movie, was one of the people who did Night of the Living Dead. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:04:31 So he got like, I think it was he's the seen Night of the Living Dead and he says that it really happened and that due to a typical army fuck up, yeah, the bodies got shipped to you need a medical supply in Louisville, Kentucky. I don't know where they were supposed to go. Yeah, where were they going to... Yeah, this is literally my notes on the scene. It says, pays homage to to the night, night, night, night, night, night, night, night, night, night, night, night, night, night, night, night, night, night, night, you, you, to to to to to the the the the their their their their, you, you, you, you, you, you, you's, you's, you're their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their. Yeah, their. Yeah, their. Yeah, their. Yeah, their. Yeah, their. Yeah, their. Yeah, their. Yeah, their. Yeah, their. Yeah, their. Yeah, their. Yeah, their. Yeah, their. Yeah, they. Yeah, they. Yeah, their. Yeah, their. Yeah, their. Yeah, their. Yeah, their. Yeah, Night of the Living Dead, Pittsburgh VA, Army, marijuana, lull. And I don't remember what any of that means. Oh, you didn't write down a don't fool around your learning? I love all like the little one-off lines. Yeah, and there were a lot of those. When Bert's leaving the warehouse, he goes, whatever happens, don't name it after me. Yeah. Like the two of them we're going to get pregnant together. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the th. th. th. the th. th. Don't th. Don't th. Don't th. Don't th. Don't th. Don't th. Don't th. th. Don't th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. Don't th. Don't th. Don't th. Don't th. Don't th. Don't the. Don't the. the. Don't the. the. the. Don't the. Don't the. Don't the. Don't the. Don't th from India? Yeah, just fucking genius shit.
Starting point is 00:05:25 In the allific teeth, skeleton farms. We're 45 seconds into the movie at this point. And laughing hysterically. So Frank takes Freddie down to the basement to show him the container with the zombies in it. Freddie asks if these have ever leaked. And Frank goes, no, this is a US Corps of Engineers. Army Corps of Engineers. And then punches the side of it.
Starting point is 00:05:48 And it leaks. And the two of them have the best reaction to it, leak. Like it's just like totally over the top, gagging and falling down and just crawling around. Yeah. So it cuts from them coughing and rolling around on to to the 80s punks 80s movies bunks 80s movies the best punks who are ridiculous yeah they're great they have great names like well some of them have great names and one of them is named
Starting point is 00:06:14 Tina so it's like oh what do you do today like oh hanging out a spider trash suicide and Tina trash played by the great we need to talk about this do we need to talk about it right now does th th th th th th th th the th th th the th th th the the the th the the th the the the th the the the the to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to the the the to to to to to the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the of the of te of te of te of te of tea tea tea tea tea te of te of te of the the of the of the of the ash played by the great Monday quickly? We need to talk about this. Do we need to talk about it right now? Does this say? Yeah. Oh, you forgot scuzz? I didn't even know that scuzzas was something. Do you just like her because she's got boobs in every movie?
Starting point is 00:06:35 She is a terrible actress. What? Yes. Terrible. Terrible. T- So the punn, the punn, the pun, the pun, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. to th. S to to to to to do and they decide to go pick up Freddy from work because Freddie always knows what to do. Freddy doesn't get off work for like six hours at this point. So they have to find their only friend that's got a car, which is suicide. He is fucking best. His car is like a broken down hot rod basically. Yeah. And it has all kinds of shit spray painted on it such as on the cross the hood suicide. And then in one of my favorite
Starting point is 00:07:11 scenes of the movie there's like an overhead shot of them getting out of the car and he opens the driver's side door and it just says why? I laughed so hard at it. It's so bad. It's so bad. Okay. So suicides an asshole. He's just a punk man. It's just trying to live his punk rock life and all these people are coming down on him. Such dicks do his punk rock friends. Such as Scuzz spider trash and Tina. Don't forget about Chuck and Casey. There's people's names. Oh well, at least somebody else had like Christian names. So they decide to kill time waiting for Fray to go off work by going and hanging out in
Starting point is 00:07:50 the cemetery. Oh, Zero Punk. Yeah, what else would you do? You gotta go break bottles and hang out in the cemetery. I did it. It just gets more and more fucking, their fucking, their fucking, their tau-sk, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, tha. And, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, thau.a, thea, thea, theirs, theirs, theirs, theira, their fa, thea, thea, thea, toa, toa, toa, toa, ta, tthere, their boom boxes playing. I think like, I'm gonna get into the soundtrack later because I fucking love the soundtrack to this movie, but it's, it is great. I think they're listening to TSOL at that point, or it might be the cramps.
Starting point is 00:08:10 I can't remember who's playing exactly, Ben. It's just these little interactionsto fuck one of the ladies. He asked her how she likes sex and death. She says, I love sex and death, so I go fuck off and die and I was like, that's such a good line! Also what a question to ask someone? Well, in a cemetery. You got to set it up. And I think it was after trash had gone on her die tribe about how she was afraid to die to die by a bunch th. th. ththen promptly took off all of her clothes. And of course I love her because her boobs are always out. I was introduced to her when I was 12 years old, so I'm in love with her for that. Where was her vagina?
Starting point is 00:08:52 What the fuck was happening there? What the fuck on that was getting an R rating, I'm sure. Then just leave her under pants on. Like, okay, if you th th th th, she is a fucking Ken doll down there. She like pulls off her top and it's just Tittie Town and then she like scoots out of her skirt or whatever. I think she ripped those leather pants. I, you know what, I like, I blocked it out because all I could see was just this smooth, pantyhose colored Ken doll looking vagina it was not it looked like a hunk of plastic I was afraid I thought that like something bad it happened to her it's not I just don't
Starting point is 00:09:40 it's actually more if there were just labia it would not be as upsetting yeah yeah oh my god, yeah. Labia aren't upsetting. Ken dolls are upsetting. It was fucked. Like I can't accurately express how much this took away from my enjoyment of the movie was her weird vagina. And she is clothed or not clothed in this way for the next 90 minutes. Every time you see her after this, it's Ken Crouch. Linea. Lina. Lina. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She is. She is. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She. She is. She is. She is. She is. She is the. She is th. She is th. She is th. She is th. She is the the the the th. She is the the the the the the the the way for the next 90 minutes.
Starting point is 00:10:05 Every time you see you after this, it's Ken Crouch. Linnea, Quigley, she's amazing. Terrible, she's incredible. She's terrible. I'm sorry. Oh my god, I wrote that down. I like death. Okay, cool.
Starting point is 00:10:19 I'm glad they gave her very few lines because she deserved none of them. You know they were like like they they they they they they they they were like they they they were like they were like they You know they were like, just take your top off. And she was like, yeah! I can't tell you how cool I thought these punks were when I first sold this movie. I can, I will get behind that. Also, but why is Tina dressed like a norm? Because there's always the one norm that hangs out nobody told me. Yeah if there was no norm you were the norm. I was wearing a phone cord as a headband so. And a necklace? I mean it's not like Freddy is a super punk
Starting point is 00:10:54 rock looking guy either. Nobody does wear a varsity jacket that says fuck you you on the back which I also laughed really hard at really getting in a gritty so so yeah sorry there's not much to the plot so to to to to to to to the to the to the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the I I I was I was I was I was I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. Really getting in the gritty. So, yeah, sorry. There's not much to the plot, so. So much to the plot. So, trash does her naked dance on top of a tombstone. On top of a sarcophagus. So dumb. So amazing. Where is her vagina? The best part is she starts to take her to close up and someone off screen just goes, trash is getting naked again. Yeah, like disappointed in it. Like a their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. th. th. th. th. their. th. th. th. th. th. th. their. tr. tr. tr. Tr. Tr. tr. tr. tr. tr. tr. tr. tr. So, trash. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. Tr. tr. tr. tr. tr. tr. tr. I. I. trash. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. S. I. I. I. I. S. I. I. S. I. I. S. Trash. Trash. I. like disappointed in it. Like imagine hanging out with that person where you're like, just don't. You didn't have a nude friend? No. Oh man, I had so many nude friends. No. Oh man, I had so many nude friends. Oh, man, I had so many nude friends. Oh, yeah. Maybe you were the norm because you were wearing like Venex, sweaters and jeans. I'm just wearing jumps. So the punks are hanging out in the cemetery and we go back to Freddie and Frank
Starting point is 00:11:50 are dealing with the aftermath of being sprayed in the face by this chemical. And suddenly they hear something pounding in the locker that previously only had a dead body in it. Yeah. Oh, hey, it's the dead body. It's come to life. Yeah. Because... And they figured this out because they also find one of the split dogs laying on the floor whining and barking. Yeah. Totally upsetting. Every time I've watched
Starting point is 00:12:14 this movie that's upset me. Half dog. And then they like beat it with a... Be it with a crutch. With a crutch. And it's going, oh, oh, oh! Which I was like trying to figure out how you, if you could do that with like half your mouth, like, I guess you can, I'm covering half my mouth. Yeah, that was just a story. You're not removing half your mouth. No, I'm not. And so they call Bert back into the office and the revived cadaver. Yeah, by putting an axe into its brain. By putting an axe into its brain?
Starting point is 00:12:47 Because he's like, how do they kill him in the movie? And they open the door and this yellow man comes running. Sprint, full sprint. Just right at Bert. I do want to say, like, all these people gave Zach Snyder. I don't think so. I'm sure. Because I was like, did I just see a zombie dick when like the crotch was covered? Well, I imagine it that it was yellow. Quick digression, like Zach Snyder redid, Dawn of the Dead.
Starting point is 00:13:11 People were giving him all sorts of shit for fast zombies, fast zombies. He's making them fast zombies. Yeah. So, you know, whatever, 20 years earlier, there were fast zombies in this movie. I do in this movie. And I, and I, and I, and I, and I, and I, and I, and I, and I, and I, and I, and I, and I, and I, and I, I, I, I, the, I, I, the, th. th. th. th. th. th. th, th. th, th, thi, thi, like, like, like, th, th, th, th, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. th. th. th. th. th. fast zombies. I do in this movie, and I didn't mind them in Zach Snyder's movie, but I didn't like that movie. Anyway, so they put a pickax through the head of the zombie and it doesn't kill him. It turns out in acthees. It's just held to the floor kicking his feet, which was funny. Right. So it turns out in actuality, every part of the zombie the zombie the zombie the zombie the zombie the zombie the zombie the zombie the zombie the zombie the zombie the zombie the zombie the zombie the zombie the zombie the zombie is is the zombie is the zombie is the zombie is the zombie is the zombie is the zombie is now. the zombie is now. the zombie is now, every their is now is now. the zombie is now, every their is now. thoom. their is now. their is now. their is now. their is now. their is now. their is now. their is now. their is now. their is now. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thiii. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. tell the guy at the mortuary that they're rabid weasels
Starting point is 00:13:46 to get him to burn them, which he refuses to do because what kind of monster would burn rodents alive. It's true. Also, why does he have a gun? Why does he have a gun? Yeah, because people always be sneaking up on him while you can listen to headphones a lot of the time probably shouldn't carry a firearm. It comes into use later. It does but it's just like it is a kind of a gun anyway who cares why? Why am I? I'm not gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna try really hard not to ask why about this movie but my notes are really
Starting point is 00:14:18 almost incomprehensible and a lot of them begin with why. I think that's just they're incomprehensible because of joy, the joy of taking this movie in. So they take the bags of body parts to the mortuary eventually show Ernie at the mortuary, friend of Burton, no relation to Sesame Street. That took me, I wrote that very close to the end of the movie. I thin. I think it turns out that Dan, that Dan, that Dan, that Dan, that Dan, that that that that that that that th, th, tho, tho, their their their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their their, their, their their, ta, took, took, took, toge, toy, toy, toy, toy, toy, toy, toy, toy, toy, toy, ta, ta, ta, ta, the end of the movie. What are they doing? I think it turns out that Dan O'Bannon didn't know who Bert and Ernie were. How can I'm an American in the 80s not know who burn Ernie are? And no one was like, excuse me, excuse me, Mr. O'Bannon? So they burn the weasels or the body parts. Yeah. And this then sends smoke up in the air and making from the crematorium. Yeah acid rain down on everyone. Why? Okay, sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry and it rains down on the punks in the cemetery and they run out of the cemetery and get into suicides car and it won't turn over it won't start and they're hearing
Starting point is 00:15:19 banging now coming from the cemetery as all the corpses in there come back to life which I loved because 45 Grave starts playing and zombies are crawling up out of the ground. There's the one shot with a one like crawling for a long time, which was obviously just a dude crawling on some dirt but it was supposed to look like he was crawling up and I love that shot so much. Yeah, it's very Adam West Batman. Yeah, yeah, so great. These kids are all all the able. They're all terrible. They're 80s movies, folks. Yeah. I do have a note here when Frank and Freddie were first getting sick from the poison
Starting point is 00:15:55 hitting them, Frank goes to vomit and they don't show him vomiting and I was just, I hate that I have to watch everyone vomit in movies and TV now. Like to see their vomit. I fucking hate it. I don't know if if the their their they they they they they they they their they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they th. I don't they they they they they they they they they they're they're they're their. I don't they're they're they're they're they. I'm. I'm. I'm. I. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I'm. I. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm th. I'm their. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm just, th. I'm just, th. I'm just, the the the the the their. I'm just. I'm their. I'm just. I'm their. I'm their. I'm to watch everyone vomit in movies and TV now. Like to see their vomit? I fucking hate it. I can't stand it. I don't know if from a hermetopobe or what it is, but I just, I'm not a fan. Hermetop. Hermetophobe? Yeah, fear of vomit. So I was just grateful that I didn't have to watch an old man vomit.
Starting point is 00:16:14 No, yeah. calls 911 and they get some EMTs in there who just toucest them all over without rubber gloves on because they've not been to EMT training. They're just fucking touching them just rubbing their hands all over them which was making me really mad. Yeah well they're establishing whether or not what's going on with these guys. You can do that with gloves on Alan. They don't have a heartbeat. No blood pressure. They check they check, they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they th. they they they tou tou tou they they they they they they they they they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they they're they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they tou tou tou tou tou tou tc. tou tc. tou tc. tou. tou tc. tou. tou tou tou tou. tou. tou tou touature is room temperature. Yeah, no blood pressure. No blood pressure? They check all their gauges and knobs and whistles and they're dead. Seemingly dead, but awake and talking and just looking real gross and feeling real bad. And Freddie's delivery of every shocked line is so good at this one. What do you mean? He's just freaking out and it's great. It's so well done. Earlier when Frank says something to him about, he's like, you know, do you want to keep
Starting point is 00:17:07 this job? Do you like this job? And Freddy's just like, like, like this job? Yeah, I have to know that he just says, Freddy should really quit this fucking job. So one of the paramedics goes out to call for backup on this one, basically. And as he does, he's then attacked by fast-moving zombies who take them all out. And then one of the zombies that's dressed like a bell boy for some reason. Yep, I'm not going to ask, but go on. Fix up the CV and send more paramedics. So cool. Which comes up again later when they send a bunch of police and then they get murdered.
Starting point is 00:17:42 Another one gets on like their cop, he's like, dispatch, send more cops. On so many punk records sampled that, some more cops thing, yeah. I don't really like a talking zombie. It's just not, especially like one later is answering Ernie's questions. Yeah, I just, I felt, this is the first movie that established the like Seemingly universal thing now of zombies eat brains Before this movie that didn't exist. Oh, I didn't know it zombies ate everything. Oh, yeah, they just ate your people yeah, yeah, they just ate your people. Yeah, eat your people. So in this movie, it's like setting up that they eat brains and that sort of became the status quo from then on out. But nothing else. Like other zombies don't talk, they generally don't run. Right. Well in Night of Living Dead, there's the one zombie that picks up a rock to smash out the window at the beginning. Yeah, so they're still using tools and that movie. So cool. Yes, cool.
Starting point is 00:18:45 I think it's because they're not supposed to scare you zombies. This is just supposed to be fun. This is just supposed to be ridiculous and over the top. And it is absolutely that. There's a scene of the brains falling out of the EMT's head, which is pretty good. And then we cut back to inside where Tina has arrived, Tina and Spider have arrived. The punks went to, you need a medical supply, looking for Freddy. Earlier in the movie, they set off that there's a third step is a doozy, you don't want to
Starting point is 00:19:12 step on that, it'll break. It comes back about 14 times. Yeah, so they go down into the basement and were revealed to one of the most famous zombies of all time, the to horror, to horror, to horror, to horror, to horror, to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to thi, thi, thi, to to thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, they, thi, thi, thi, thi, they, they, they, their, their, they. they. they. they. the movie, the movie, the movie, the movie, the movie, the movie, the movie, the movie, the movie, they....... And, they. And, they. And, they. And, they, they, they. they, they, they, they, they, they-a, thi, thiiiiii. thiiiii. thi. theymea, earlier, earlier, they. they. they. they, earlier, they, the Tar Man zombie. He's the one that walked all weird and said, brains, that kills suicide so early. Yeah, which is fine. I didn't want to look at suicide anyway. Oh man, the soliloquy that he delivers about this not being a costume is so amazing. It's a way of life. If suicide had had like 10 more years, he'd be working at his dad's car dealership. You know what I mean? So suicide goes out way too early for my tasks. It was fine by me. And Tarman zombies eating his brains and the rest of the punks escape and go to the mortuary trying to track down Freddie. Where Tina wraps her arms
Starting point is 00:19:58 around Freddie and just shakes him just for about for the next 30 minutes Tina we'll be shaking Freddy. Just stop shaking him he's in pain like stop it I don't know it sucks for Freddy's Day is such shit and from here on now it's just carnage the zombies start attacking the mortuary. There's like hundreds of them yeah they have to board up the windows as you do in every zombie movie because how could you I mean they can't get past boards. Yeah. Yeah. And there's the Seymour cop scene that you referenced earlier with the cop, the dead now zombie cop waving in the rest of the cops to get them close enough that all the zombies can attack
Starting point is 00:20:34 them. Yeah, that was pretty good. They're basically just running around inside this mortuary trying that got stuck in the Unita warehouse. Right, the guy who's trying to fuck the girl all the time. Yeah, the two of them. Yeah. Ernie breaks his foot somehow, like there's no, he just says like walking and then he's like, ah, my foot's broken. Like, it's really dumb. Yeah. And then they lock Frank and Freddie in the chapel, right. And then they're Fee f-Ffffffffffffff-Ff-Ff-Ff-I they're they're they're they're their they're their they're they're their their they're their their they're their their th- th- th- their their th- their. And their their their their their their their their. Er- their their. Er. Er. Er. Er. Er. Er. Er. Er. Er. Er. Er. Er. Er. Er. Er. Er. Er. Er. Er. Er. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And th. And th. Yeah. And th. Yeah. And th. Yeah. And th. Yeah. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thiii. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And their their their their their their the th. Tina decides to stay with them because I guess like she and Freddie are just like so down. They're forever. Yeah. Which... They're BFS. Dude's dead. Get out. And she's like, I'm gonna stay and they're like, okay, bye. Walk her in. Well, you know, you're gonna save your own hide at that point.
Starting point is 00:21:17 I guess. So she starts screaming when they naturally zombie out and start trying to eat her. Yeah. She screams like other people come back in and while they're like hitting Freddie with- Yeah, they've all gotten these great improvised weapons of the axes and hammers and stuff. Frank just like zombies out without anybody look like noticing it. He's like, he was like watching it happen and I'm like, you can see him right. Like, he's in your line of sight. Oh, he's like, you can see him right now. Like he's in your line of sight. Oh, he's gone. I'm like, what? They were just like, fuck and he's gone. I always think that's hilarious.
Starting point is 00:21:48 But he's just running out and he's just like, scuba and he looks behind him like, whoop I'm out. Yeah, Frank don't want to hurt nobody. Yeah, Frank is like a really self-a-wa, th. climbs himself into that crematorium and takes his wedding ring off and kisses it. Like, you're a zombie. I don't think that would happen. Maybe he hasn't made the full flip yet, but he knows what's going to happen because he saw Freddy go.
Starting point is 00:22:11 Oh, you're right, because he didn't actually attack Tina. Maybe you're right. And while he's doing that, Rocky Ernie's making a big deal about setting up the cre so sad. Like, you know, laying himself down in the cremature. What earlier when they're burning the rabid weasels, Ernie's making a big deal about setting up the crematorium. And Frank's just goes, I could operate that. Yeah. Which comes back later when he burns himself when he burns himself. And really all it is, it seems to be is pushing a button. Yeah. Clearly we can all operate. But, you know, as we know, this is this is this is this is not this is not this is not this is not this is not this is not this is not this is not this is not this is not this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going thi thi. thi. this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going this is not going th thi thi thi thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. to be good that he's putting more of himself into the atmosphere to make more zombies. They just keep getting like whittled down. People are trying to get to cars, drive away, and that doesn't work out. Doing that running through a crowd of zombies, seen that's in every zombie movie. Which is great when they're slow moving zombies, when they're fast-moving zombies. And it's finally gets down to their their their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, t. t. t. t. t. thea, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, t. try. try. trying. trying. trying, trying, trying, trying, trying, trying, trying, trying, trying, trying. People. People. People's. People. People's. People's. trying in this like cross space above the mortuary and Freddy is trying to get to them. And he's telling Tina how much he loves her so
Starting point is 00:23:08 she must let him eat her brains. Cool, cool, cool. You know how boyfriends can be. Yeah, high school boyfriends. Yeah, your high school boyfriend with the fuck you letterman jacket's probably going to be problematic. Yeah, yep. So this whole time we've kind kind of been introduced to the character of this general that's trying to track down these zombies. Yeah, he's introduced at the very beginning and then you don't see him again until nearer the very end. And when you are introduced to somebody's like this like palatial estate that's his house in like Malibu or something? I have the words rich people music is playing because it's just like like like. know and his wife says uh what did she say I made your favorite for dinner lamb chops and I had lamb chops for lunch shut off the fuck eat lamchops for lunch god I love this movie and so we so we to the tank so um we come back to that
Starting point is 00:24:00 general later on in the film as like because they're the shit's all going to get the tanks oh which I the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the their toe toe toe. too. to their to their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their te. te. te. I te. I te. I te. I te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. t going to getting fucked and they called the number on the tanks. Oh, which I called. It cannot be completed as dialed. Oh, really? I was like, maybe it'll be like a funny recorded message or something, but it was just like the Verizon lady telling me that I couldn't complete the thing. That's what I was thinking, like, how much can it possibly cost?
Starting point is 00:24:28 I'd love that you called that. That's awesome. And then I was like, oh, am I going to get the army? Like, I thought, I thought it might be track out all the hard nerds. So they've called the number on the side of the tank to try and get the army to help, and the army does help by sending a tactical nuclear strike on Louisville. They're like only 4,000 people were killed and I'm like, that's more than we're killed in 9-11, sirs. I know 9-11 hasn't. I th. I th th they made it seem like 4,000 people was just like nothing. Less than 3,000 people died in 9-11 and we are never permitted to forget it.
Starting point is 00:25:10 So Louisville, RIP. As this tactical nuclear strike is hitting the ground, Freddie gets into the cross-space to get to his girlfriend and Ernie, and that freezeto Tina and Ernie. And that freeze frames on that. And you see the mushroom cloud above the Louisville cardboard skyline. It's so shitty. It's so shitty. It's a pretty city. It doesn't look like that.
Starting point is 00:25:34 No. It doesn't. They make it look like absolute garbage. It's great. Maybe. Maybe, a lot of things, th, th, th, th, I, like, th, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, th..... th. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to I think a lot of things looked really shitty in 86 if movies are to have me believe. So after you know the mushroom cloud goes up and then it starts to rain again and then we get the exact same footage from earlier of the zombies coming up out of the ground. Couldn't even shoot it again. And then 45 Grave starts playing and that's the end of the movie. Yeah, mercifully. Oh, come on! It was really really really but I never need to see it again.
Starting point is 00:26:06 I first saw this movie when I was 12 years old. So it came out in 86 and I saw it the year it came out. And it couldn't have been any more of a movie for me that it was. I loved, you know, I got to see boobs when I was 12 years old, that was crucial. For like, like, ever. She's a solid 15 minutes of the movie is just her boobs flapping around. Yeah. Flopping around. I shouldn't say that they are extremely perky. But I mean they're just out, out she's running, she's jumping, she's wearing a vest at one point but the boobs are still
Starting point is 00:26:35 visible through the armholes like it's just so much. You remember in Silent Night Deadly Night when she went to go let the dog in and she'd just put on like these tiny tiny denim shorts. Real talk, like I didn't recognize her with that wig on and then I was like, oh I know those boofs. That's Linnea Quigley, here we are. And you can see why I was fascinated with her as a child. But I can't see why you're fascinated with her as an adult. So the movie is like so entertaining to me because I you know I love zombie movies and I love stupidity and this just bridges those two things. Really?
Starting point is 00:27:11 Solid marriage of those things. And the soundtrack was so good. It is. I would put this up against, I think this movie and Repo Man Man's like, this is the Los Angeles punk scene, this is your introduction to that, and this is just like, this is like punk and death rock and, you know, like just whatever the cramps are and just like, it was such an awesome introduction for me to that scene and to those bands and stuff,
Starting point is 00:27:37 like, really, really formative. I remember I had a set se set that set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set set that that that that that that that that that that a cassette that I dubbed off a friend of mine That was one side was Alice Cooper's billion dollar babies and the other side was this soundtrack So like and that was just constantly in rotation. Yeah as a kid so yeah, I was definitely getting my creep on On the showker. Well, I mean this I can see this being totally formative for you I can see this actually knowing you now. I can see this actually knowing You know I can see this actually actually actually actually actually actually actually actually actually actually actually actually this actually this actually this actually this actually this actually this actually this actually this actually this this this this actually this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this actually this this this this this this this actually this actually this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this actually this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this th th th th tho tho tho tho tho tho thoo thooooo thoo thooo thooooo. tho. tho. tho. th it. I love dumb humor. It's very dumb. There's a point. I mean someone does call another character Dick Brain in this movie, which I feel like I've actually heard you say. So it's just, oh it's such a mess. You cannot deny that it is a mess. I don't think it's a mess. I think for what it's doing exactly what it says. Being a mess. I think it's intentionally a mess. that it is. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the th. th. th. the th. thi. the the thi. thi. the the the the the the thi the the the the the the the thi thi the thi thi the the thi the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. I th mess. I really don't think it's a mess. I think for what it's doing exactly what it says. Being a mess, I think it's intentionally a mess, but it's a mess. Okay. All right. But it's a fun mess. Okay. It's definitely fun. I never need to see it again. I saw it. Why would you ever need to see it again? Do you feel like, are there horror comedy movies that you like? You know, I probably not. I like, I, I, I, I th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th i th i thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's intentionally it's th i, I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I th I I th I th I th I th I th I th I th I th I th like I th like I th like I th like I th like like like like I th like like like like th like that. I that. again? Do you feel like there are like, are there horror comedy movies that you like?
Starting point is 00:28:46 You know, I probably not. I mean I like Stitches, I like them, but I'll probably never watch stitches again really. What about like, uh, evil dead I've seen several times I guess and but you know. Shawn of the dead? I actually have seen that more than once also. Okay. So it's just this one. No, I just didn't know if that was not a sub-genre that you're a fat. It's certainly not my favorite. Okay. Yeah. I think it's really hard to do horror comedy well. Yeah. And for me, this totally like, this does a horror comedy, the slapstick and just ridiculousness of it. It's certainly slapstick. I think, you know what, maybe that's part of my issue with it is I really don't like slapstick. Okay. I just really don't. It's just not, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:29:28 it's not that funny to me. Sure. Maybe I'm just bitter and shitty. I mean, did you grow up watching. I grew up watching the three stooges? I hate the three stooges. But I also grew up watching America's funny some videos where I will like laugh every time I see somebody could hit in the balls with something like that's always funny. It's just a goose poke at somebody in the ball. Yeah, that's so I don't know. I don't know what my beef is with this movie. It's just... And you didn't like the the animatronic puppet zombie telling them why she likes brains? I hated that. Really? Well here's the thing I liked about it. She was cut off mid-spine and she was strapped to like an exam table across her chest. So her spine was just sticking out and it was like curving back and forth like a cat's tale. I really liked that. I hated that she was there explaining, I hated that the exposition came from a half-decapitated zombie. You know what I mean? It's the pain of being dead. Like, you just keep that to yourself.
Starting point is 00:30:35 You know? You don't have to explain anything to these living? You don't know them anything? No. And I guess I like zombies better as like just a mindless thing, like almost motivationless except for food, whereas these zombies are like plotting. They're like, oh if we get on the radio, we can tell them to send more food. You know, it's just, I prefer a mindless zombie. Okay, I think the, a lot of it was to distance themselves from like the Night of Living Dead to never know of some of us. Because that was, you know, that was a series that continued in one direction and this seems to have gone in a complete, because there are sequels to this, right? Yeah, they're not, none of them are worth watching.
Starting point is 00:31:12 Like this is the only one. Yeah. For you, for you, this is worth visiting. Yeah, I mean, I'm being too harsh harsh too too too too too too too too too harsh too too harsh too harsh to harsh to harsh to harsh to harsh harsh to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to have to have to have to have to have to have to have to have to have to have. And I. And I. And to have to have to have.. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm, I'm sure that like early 90s stuff. Yeah, late 80s, early 90s is where I start to feel more at home. Right, right, right. And so, and that's when you were 12, 14 years old. Yeah, yeah, so I think that stuff, it hit you at that age. And like, you know, it means something different to you, I think. Because I don't know what I would be like if I saw this when I was 30 30. Maybe I'd hate it. Probably not. No, I'm going to go with it now. And I didn't hate it. It's it is not fair to say that I hated it. I just, I laughed a lot and I rolled my eyes a lot. Did you, did you know you were going into a horror comedy? Uh, just from reading the back of the box. Okay, I like didn't realize to that's that I that I th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi th. It's thi thi. It's not, it's not th. It's not th. It's not th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's not, it's not, it's not the. It's not th. It's not the. It's not the. It's not the. It's not the. It's not th. It's not. It's not. It's like didn't realize to what extent. Right. All right, so I think we could do, we could probably do a pretty quick rating on this one.
Starting point is 00:32:28 No, that's not true. Uh, five. Okay. This is my 50-yard line kind of where I didn't love it, I didn't hate it. I probably won't watch it again, but I appreciate its merits for what it is, but it's just not, not not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not, not for me, not for me, not for me, not for me, not for me, not for me, not for me, not for me, not, not for me, not for me, no, not for me, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, not for me, not for me, not for me, not for me, not for me, not for me, get the words together to describe the majesty that you feel about this movie? This movie is really important to me. On like, just like a fundamental building my love of horror and ridiculousness, like, and
Starting point is 00:32:56 introducing me to these great bands, like 45 Grave and the Cramps and stuff like that. I didn't know about these bands previous to this. Rocky Erickson, like TSOL, like it was just really, it was really important for that. I'm giving it a 10, Katie. What? I've never given a movie here at 10 before. Shut it down.
Starting point is 00:33:12 We're fucking done. This is perfect. Yeah. Okay. For me, this go this way. Because I would put this movie, like, I'm going to put it in the same pocket with Alucarda and just like these fucking ridiculous movies that I love and I love how fucking ridiculous they are.
Starting point is 00:33:34 But if you're not into that scene, totally understandable you wouldn't be there. What does that say true either. I mean, I love stupid comedy. I love over the top and just being ridiculous and like people bent in half screaming Satan naked with a goat man. You know what? A constant in these movies that you've rated highly is a lot of boops, a lot of screen time with boops.
Starting point is 00:34:00 Oh yeah, I love boops too. Yeah, big fan. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. that. that. that. that. that. that. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's. that's that's that's that's that's that's that's th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. the only thing that I love about them.
